Worcester Three Choirs Weekend 4 Days from
£545
Jul
2021 sees the beautiful cathedral city of Worcester play host to the Three Choirs Festival, a programme of choral and orchestral concerts, cathedral services, solo and chamber music recitals. It is the oldest non-competitive classical music festival in the world, having celebrated its 300th anniversary back in 2015. A hand-picked selection of concerts offer an entertaining addition to your weekend itinerary, which also includes visits to some fascinating locations including the stunning Painswick Rococo Garden and some of the most charming Cotswold towns.
ITINERARY Excursion One – Cirencester, Painswick Rococo Garden & Evening Concert in Worcester We start the day with a visit to the quaint town of Cirencester. Known as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’, it was ranked in the Roman times as second only to London in terms of size and importance! There is much to see, from the impressive cathedral-like church, the many quirky shops near the pretty market square and the fascinating Antiques Centre; a veritable emporium of treasures. Afterwards, we make our way to the tranquil Painswick Rococo Garden. Initially designed in the 1740s as an English country gentleman’s pleasure garden, it is now the country’s only surviving complete Rococo garden, so-called for its winding pathways and imaginative follies, full of architectural charm.

Dunham Massey

Aug & Oct
Britain’s rigid class system defined the lives of our ancestors. We discover what life was like on both sides of the social divide in some of Cheshire’s finest houses; from the privileged status of the families ‘upstairs’ to the responsibilities and duties of the servants ‘downstairs’. We also explore the history of one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites.
ITINERARY Excursion One – Dunham Massey & Tatton Park
Excursion Two – Quarry Bank Mill & Arley Hall
We make our way to Dunham Massey, a fine Georgian house set in a tranquil 300-acre deer park. We delve into the colourful stories of past owners and servants alike, including tales of the house’s role as Stamford Military Hospital during the First World War. We can also take a stroll around the magnificent gardens that surround the house and feature some of the most scenic landscapes in the north.
The story of the cotton industry is at the heart of Quarry Bank Mill, one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites located on the Styal Estate in the Cheshire countryside. Built in 1784, this restored Georgian mill, including hand spinners in authentic costume, the noise of working machinery and Europe’s most powerful working waterwheel, offers a rich insight into the earliest days of our industrial past. Next stop is Arley Hall which has been the muchloved home of Viscount Ashbrook and his forbears for over 550 years. We enjoy lunch together before exploring the house. Arley Hall provides a warm, inviting atmosphere with elaborate ceilings, oak-panelling, intricate stained glass and beautiful contents, giving us an intimate insight into life at the Hall and the history of the family. Outside, the formal gardens are home to a huge variety of plants, including a magnificent double herbaceous border.

May, Jul & Aug
Northumberland’s spectacular and dramatic coast is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and this ruggedly handsome county is home to more castles than any other in England, reflecting its turbulent past and infamous conflicts such as the Border Wars. We discover many of these magnificent castles, including mighty Bamburgh and iconic Alnwick, and delve deeper into the past with visits to historic priories and the atmospheric Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
ITINERARY Excursion One – Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, Brinkburn Priory & Tynemouth Castle and Priory This morning we head to Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, where we take in the Grecian architecture, admire the medieval castle and explore the extensive Grade I listed gardens. Belsay’s Greek-revival mansion was inspired by a honeymoon trip to Athens, with the Pillar Hall at the centre of the house built from rock carved from Belsay’s own quarry. We continue on to Brinkburn Priory, a secluded medieval monastery built on the banks of the River Coquet, where we enjoy a guided tour. The 12thcentury Augustinian Priory was dissolved in 1536, and was subsequently owned by the Fenwick family who built a manor house on the ruins of the Priory building. The church was reroofed and restored in the mid-19th century, and is one of Northumberland’s finest examples of early Gothic architecture.

Afterwards, we visit Tynemouth Castle and Priory, situated on a rocky headland overlooking the North Sea. The moated castle towers, gatehouse and keep are combined with the ruins of the historic Benedictine priory, where early kings of Northumbria were once buried. The extensive site was once one of the largest fortified areas in England, and we discover its 2,000-year history on our guided tour, from its original beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, to an Anglican monastery and, more recently, its role in defending the Tyne in the First and Second World Wars.
Excursion Two – Alnwick Castle and Gardens & Newcastle sightseeing cruise Still home to the Duke of Northumberland and his family, Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, and featured in the hugely popular Downton Abbey and Harry Potter. On our guided tour, we explore the history of the Percy family through the eclectic array of furniture and art they collected and displayed in the impressive State Rooms. We also enjoy a guided tour of the superlative Alnwick Garden, set around a cascading fountain, and surrounding ‘Capability’ Brown landscape. After our tours, we enjoy lunch together here. In the afternoon we return to Newcastle where we embark on a sightseeing cruise on the River Tyne, an ideal way to view this wonderful city’s finest and most famous riverside scenery. Listen to the fascinating commentary on Newcastle’s once thriving maritime heritage and enjoy the spectacular panorama of the Tyne Gorge, including all seven bridges. Light refreshments are available to purchase on board. Excursion Three – Lindisfarne Priory, Lindisfarne Castle & Bamburgh Castle We head across to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, lying just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Only accessible twice a day at low tide, this unspoilt island is where Christianity first took hold in Britain. Here we explore Lindisfarne Priory. Step back in time and follow in the footsteps of the monks who built the priory nearly 1,400 years ago, and marvel at the remarkable Rainbow Arch, a feature which has survived despite the central tower above collapsing over 200 years ago. The museum provides a fascinating insight into the Viking raid and the cult of St Cuthbert, and here we can see the medieval manuscript, the Lindisfarne Gospels. Next we discover Lindisfarne Castle which commands a spectacular position, built on a rocky crag high above the sea. This former fort was converted into an Edwardian holiday home by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and both the military and domestic aspects of the castle are in evidence today.

Enchanting castles, colourful landscapes and moated manor houses, this getaway has the Garden of England stamped all over it! On this captivating break we learn about Kent’s role in shaping English history, and discover some of its famous residents including Sir Winston Churchill. Ightham Mote
This afternoon, we head to Chiddingstone Castle where we enjoy a guided tour with a focus on all of the castle’s treasures and how they are cared for. Set in 35 acres of beautiful grounds, the castle has undergone a number of architectural changes; from its beginnings as an early timber-framed Tudor dwelling to a rebuild which resembles a medieval castle in the early 19th century. Today it houses the collections of the late antiquarian Denys Eyre Bower including Japanese lacquer, Ancient Egyptian treasures, Stuart paintings and Jacobite manuscripts. The Victorian kitchen and servants’ hall give a taste of the former ‘upstairs downstairs’ life of the house.

We make our way to Sissinghurst Castle where we enjoy an exclusive out-of-hours guided tour before the castle opens. From its fascinating time as a prison in the 1700s, to a home to the women’s land army, we discover its astonishing history and hear how novelist Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson started transforming the castle and gardens in the 1930s. The grounds are stunning; all laid out as a series of individually-planted ‘rooms’ including a fragrant Herb Garden and Rose Garden. From here, we continue on to the moated manor house of Ightham Mote. Once described by historian David Starkey as “the most beautiful and the most interesting of English country houses”, Ightham has been home to medieval knights, courtiers to Henry VIII and Victorian High Society. Slumbering gardens lay outside, as well as a picturesque courtyard, an orchard, water features and woodland walks. Our last visit takes us to the spellbinding Canterbury Cathedral, where we take a guided tour with special access to the archives and library. Being the oldest cathedral in England, it dates back to Norman times and has been a site of Christian pilgrimage since Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered here in 1170. Kent Castles, Roman Remains & Canterbury

5 Days from

Jun & Aug
Discover Kent through the ages and take in the best that the ‘Garden of England’ has to offer. Within Britain’s oldest county lies a treasure trove of historic landmarks entwined with enchanting castles, and on this fascinating break we visit impressive Roman ruins dating back to the 1st century, the stunning city of Canterbury, and some of England’s most remarkable coastal fortresses.
ITINERARY Excursion One – Down House & Lullingstone Roman Villa
Excursion Three – Canterbury, St Augustine’s Abbey & Dover Castle
Our first stop is Down House, where we enjoy a guided tour of the home of naturalist Charles Darwin and his family for 40 years. Several rooms have been recreated as they appeared when he lived here, including the study where he wrote On the Origin of Species. The house is surrounded by extensive gardens in which Darwin carried out many experiments.
We start the day with a visit to Canterbury, one of medieval Europe’s great centres of pilgrimage and learning. Here we explore the impressive ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey on a guided tour. With its origins in the 6th century, this was one of England’s most important religious sites and a centre of learning and spirituality for almost 1,000 years. A museum houses some of the archaeological finds discovered at the site.
We continue on to Lullingstone Roman Villa, one of the most outstanding Roman villa survivals in Britain. As well as the remains of the buildings, we can see the spectacular 4th-century mosaics, prints of the rare wall paintings, the heated bath-suite and ‘house-church’, as well as galleries displaying Lullingstone’s collection of Roman artefacts.
Next we visit Deal Castle, a fine Tudor artillery fortress that was built on the orders of Henry VIII to protect England’s coast from invasion. We learn more about the castle’s fascinating history on our guided tour, exploring the storerooms and tunnels below up to the circular rooms above. We round off our day at Walmer Castle and Gardens. Like Deal, Walmer was built during Henry VIII’s reign, but since 1708 its status as the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports has seen the fortress transformed into a home for notable people including the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill and the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. We enjoy cream tea here before a guided tour of the magnificent gardens with a member of the gardening team.

Our break to Northern Ireland offers a captivating combination of unspoilt countryside, magnificent castles, historic houses and dramatic natural wonders, allowing us to learn more about the country’s intriguing heritage. We explore the ancient stone edifices of the Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, get a fascinating insight into the famous Titanic in the city where it all began and also discover the unique history of Hillsborough Castle, once created by one of the most powerful families in the country and now the Queen’s official residence when visiting Northern Ireland.
ITINERARY Day One We fly to Belfast airport and are transferred to our hotel. We continue, taking in stunning views of the wild North Atlantic Ocean along the coastal road, to one of Northern Ireland’s most beautiful estates, Glenarm Castle, which has been the private residence of the Earls of Antrim for 400 years. Throughout the castle are superb examples of Irish furniture as well as portraits of family members from the early 17th century onwards which we learn about on our guided tour. We also explore the castle’s walled garden, one of Ireland’s oldest, originally created to supply the house with fruit and vegetables and now filled with lovely flowers and specimen plants. Day Three – Belfast, Titanic Belfast & Hillsborough Castle Our day begins with a guided city tour of Belfast, Northern Ireland’s vibrant capital and now a thriving, modern metropolis with a colourful history – as a key player in the Industrial Revolution; it was the centre for the Irish linen and tobacco industries. We take in the city’s highlights before visiting Titanic Belfast, a fantastic museum located on site of the original shipyard in which the famous liner was built. The museum brings the maiden voyage of the Titanic to life in the city where it all began.

Next we visit Hillsborough Castle, a beautiful late Georgian mansion created in the 1770s by Wills Hill, first Marquis of Downshire. Surrounded by 100 acres of glorious gardens, Hillsborough boasts elegant State Rooms filled with wonderful paintings, furnishings and curiosities. The Queen, The Queen Mother, and Princess Margaret spent many holidays at Hillsborough and since the 1970s, it has been the official residence of both the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and The Queen. Day Four – Castle Ward & Mount Stewart House and Garden We head to Castle Ward, an eccentric 18th-century house that features a curious mixture of architectural styles. Mysterious and magical, the unique landscapes of the Fens and the Norfolk Broads, with their vast skies, stunning waterways and idyllic countryside, are home to a plethora of historic homes. We explore many of these fine houses, from Anne Boleyn’s atmospheric Blickling Hall to Her Majesty the Queen’s much-loved Sandringham, and have the chance to admire the striking scenery with a cruise along the meandering Broads and a nostalgic journey on a heritage railway, taking us back to times gone by.
ITINERARY Excursion One – King’s Lynn & Sandringham Estate
Excursion Two – Blickling Hall, Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk Broads Cruise & Wroxham

The legacy of this rich past is a fascinating maritime heritage and an incredible array of historic buildings where fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes and the iconic Custom House, an elegant 17th-century merchants’ exchange, overlooks the harbour.
Our first stop this morning is at Blickling Hall, one of Britain’s finest Jacobean houses, set at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park. We have time to explore both above and below stairs including the superb 18th-century Long Gallery, home to the biggest library collection in the National Trust. There’s little doubt that Blickling’s Boleyn connections (not least tales of Anne Boleyn’s headless ghost) add hugely to the atmosphere here.
Sandringham Estate

Built in 1870, Sandringham has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs. The interiors boast many astonishing exhibits such as an important collection of oriental arms and armour while the walls are hung with family portraits by leading contemporary court painters. Suffolk is a county filled with picturesque countryside vistas, charming villages and historic wool towns that have changed little since Tudor times, with their timber-framed buildings and crooked streets. We step back in time in lovely Lavenham, one of the best preserved and wealthiest towns in Tudor England, and explore Constable Country, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where we walk in the footsteps of painter John Constable, discovering the stunning rural landscapes that inspired his greatest work.
ITINERARY
We head to the picturesque market town of Coggeshall, known for its many beautiful listed buildings, many of which are timber-framed dating back as far as the 14th century. We pay a visit to Paycocke’s House, an exquisitely carved half-timbered Tudor cloth merchant’s house built around 1500. The house is a testament to the wealth generated by the cloth trade in East Anglia in the 16th century and we learn more about the fascinating story of Paycocke’s riches to rags decline and Edwardian restoration on our guided tour. The tour also encompasses the tranquil cottage garden, a hidden Arts & Crafts gem created during the renovation of Paycocke’s. After our visit, we have free time to explore Coggeshall before continuing on to Marks Hall Estate. A striking heritage landscape that extends to over 2,200 acres of countryside, the estate includes broadleaved woodlands, relaxing lakes, an 18thcentury walled garden with beautiful herbaceous borders and a stunning Arboretum featuring a tree collection from all the temperate regions of the world, with areas representing Europe, Asia, North America and the Southern Hemisphere. Excursion Two – Lavenham, Lavenham Guildhall & Melford Hall Picturesque Lavenham is a remarkably wellpreserved Tudor village which was one of the richest towns in England during the 15th century thanks to the woollen-cloth industry. Here we enjoy a guided walking tour learning more about the village’s fascinating history. We also visit Lavenham Guildhall, a fine timber-framed building that is a potent reminder of Lavenham’s former prosperity. Discover the stories of the people who have used the Guildhall through its almost-500 years at the heart of the community.

In the afternoon we make our way to Melford Hall where we enjoy a guided tour. Home to the Hyde Parker family for more than two centuries, it remains their beloved family home to this day and contains fine collections of art, porcelain and furniture. Excursion Three – Constable Country: Flatford, Dedham & East Bergolt We travel to the picturesque Stour Valley and Dedham Vale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty made famous by the paintings of John Constable. We stop first in the picturesque hamlet of Flatford. Here we visit the National Trust owned Bridge Cottage, which houses an exhibition about Constable, before enjoying a guided walking tour of some of the key views and locations which inspired many of Constable’s iconic paintings, including Flatford Mill and Willy Lott’s House, immortalised in The Haywain.

On this intriguing tour we delve into more than a century of aviation at the Imperial War Museum Duxford and the Shuttleworth Collection, and discover the wartime secrets of stately homes such as Bletchley Park and Audley End House. We combine these historical gems with a trip into London where we explore the country’s political past at the Houses of Parliament and the fascinating Churchill War Rooms.
ITINERARY
We discover one of the most remarkable stories of World War Two as we visit Bletchley Park, where the pioneering achievements of code breakers provided crucial assistance to the Allied war effort. Our visit gives us an insight into the clandestine operations here, as well as free time to explore the galleries and exhibits inside the original code breaking huts, which feature the world’s largest and most comprehensive display of Enigma machines. Next, we travel to the Shuttleworth Collection, the world-renowned collection of over 150 historic aircraft and vehicles, spanning the last 100 years, located at the Old Warden Aerodrome. Opened to the public in 1963, the collection’s aircraft and vehicles, as much as possible, are all kept working as intended. Some of the most notable aircraft are the five Edwardian aeroplanes, of which one is the oldest British aeroplane still in flying condition. Excursion Two – Houses of Parliament & Churchill War Rooms Today we head into London and the centre of political life in the UK, the Houses of Parliament. Our audio-guided tour takes us through both the House of Lords and House of Commons, offering an insight into one thousand years of history, modern day politics plus stunning art and architecture. Just some of the highlights include the Queen’s Robing Room, both the Commons and Lords chambers and the historic Westminster Hall. Afterwards, we walk to the nearby Churchill War Rooms in the heart of Westminster where we enjoy lunch together before visiting these historic rooms. Set underneath the Treasury building, the museum is comprised of the Cabinet War Rooms, used as a base of British Government command during the Second World War, as well as the Churchill Museum, which displays many exhibits that give a fascinating glimpse into the life of Britain’s wartime Prime Minister.

Excursion One – Bletchley Park & Shuttleworth Collection
Excursion Three – Imperial War Museum Duxford & Audley End House and Gardens We make our way to Imperial War Museum Duxford. This historic airfield is home to Britain’s largest aviation museum, but it first saw service in the First World War. During the Second World War it was a base for RAF planes and pilots, including the fighter ‘ace’ Douglas Bader. The US Air Force also used it in the later years of the war. Today, the hangars and buildings of Duxford contain some of the largest objects from the world-class collections of the Imperial War Museum, including hundreds of aircraft such as a Lancaster, Spitfire and Concorde, military vehicles and artillery pieces. There are also displays of other artefacts, films, photographs, documents and books. We continue on to Audley End, one of the finest Jacobean houses in England. Here we enjoy a fascinating guided tour and learn about the house’s role in the Second World War. Audley End was the main training base for the Polish section of the Special Operations Executive, and agents were trained here to parachute into their homeland to fight against the Nazis. We also learn about the network of defences that once ran through the estate, part of a scheme to protect London from an attack from the east. As we tour round the house and gardens we find out more about the Polish contingent and their British support staff, where they lived and worked, and what the gruelling training courses involved.

We start the day at Compton Castle. With high curtain walls, towers and a portcullis, this fairy tale abode lies within a remote backdrop of rolling hills and fruit-laden orchards. We enjoy a guided tour to discover more about the castle’s most famous inhabitant; Sir Humphrey Gilbert, coloniser of Newfoundland and half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh. Still the home of the Gilbert family for nearly 600 years, interior highlights include the medieval kitchen, the Great Hall and Solar (private living quarters). Outside we find a medieval knot garden, rose garden and orchard.
From here, we travel through Dartmoor National Park; a cocktail of moss-blanketed boulders, hurrying streams and cinematic granite tors, before we reach Castle Drogo. This striking granite structure was designed by Edwin Lutyens at the beginning of the 20th century and is wrapped in gorgeous terraced gardens which gaze over the Teign Valley and Dartmoor. The castle itself is currently undergoing an interesting six-year restoration project and this is a great chance to see the progress. Excursion Three – Exeter, River Exe Cruise & A la Ronde We head first to Exeter to explore this handsome and compact university city at leisure. Shrouded by a beautiful cathedral, a great range of shops and pockets of lively cobbled streets are just waiting to be explored. Embarking in Exmouth, we enjoy a relaxing scenic cruise along the calm waters of the River Exe estuary where we can admire the stunning scenery including the start of the magnificent Jurassic Coast. Being an important habitat and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, we may even be lucky enough to spot some of the beautiful wildlife including the resident seals and migrating birds. After our cruise, we journey to A la Ronde, a distinctive 16-sided house built at the request of two spinster cousins in the 18th century. During our guided tour, we are transported to another world inside this eccentric house, crammed full of extraordinary artefacts, curiosities and quirky mementoes from the cousins’ grand European tour. Jul
The compelling and often turbulent history of the border country that separates Scotland and England has resulted in a region that is exceptionally rich in cultural heritage; with a host of defensive forts, ruined abbeys and ancient castles scattered through the scenic and romantic landscape. On this engaging tour, we discover the fascinating stories behind some of the iconic places along this oft-disputed border. We delve deeper into tales of Roman Britain along Hadrian’s Wall, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and discover the feuding history of the Border Reivers, a time when the Anglo-Scottish border displayed all the characteristics of a lawless frontier, when people owed their clan loyalty to their blood relatives.
ITINERARY Day One We check in to the Copthorne Hotel, Newcastle Quayside in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager. Day Two – Alnwick Castle & Newcastle Still home to the Duke of Northumberland and his family, Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, and featured in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter. We explore the history of the Percy family through the eclectic array of furniture and art they collected. On our return to Newcastle we enjoy a guided tour, partly by coach and partly on foot, to learn about the history of this vibrant city, which dates back almost 2,000 years. Day Three – Bamburgh Castle & Berwick-upon-Tweed After checking out of our Newcastle hotel, we make our way to Bamburgh Castle, proudly stood above the Northumberland Heritage Coast. Discover the fascinating state rooms and the medieval kitchen, as well as the treasure trove of unique paintings, furniture, weapons, and china. Next stop is Berwick-upon-Tweed, England’s most northerly town, lying just three miles from the Scottish border. Berwick’s great Elizabethan walls were built to keep invading Scots from entering the town and offer spectacular views across the river. Afterwards, we continue to Carlisle where we check in to the Hallmark Hotel, our base for the next two nights. Day Four – Carlisle Castle, Tullie House Museum & Penrith Castle We start the morning with a visit to Carlisle Castle, founded by William Rufus in 1092. A mighty stronghold in the frequent conflict between England and Scotland,

the castle was besieged many times in its history, and was once the headquarters of the Border Regiment. We then head to Tullie House Museum, which is home to considerable collections of fine and decorative art, human history and natural sciences. The main displays take us on a journey through the ages, from the present day back to the Romans and before, with objects including Roman and Viking finds. This afternoon, we make our way to the ruins of Penrith Castle, built at the end of the 14th century by Ralph Neville, who played a key role in the defence of the Scottish border. It was later transformed into a luxurious residence by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who became Richard III. Day Five – Melrose Abbey & Jedburgh Abbey Today we are joined by our guide for a fascinating themed tour on the infamous Reivers, bringing their fascinating story to life. We travel first to Melrose Abbey, a magnificent ruin on a grand scale, known for its many carved decorative details. Later we continue on to Jedburgh Abbey, founded by David I in around 1138 for Augustinian monks. Like Melrose, its close location to the English border meant it was frequently targeted by invading border armies and was badly damaged and rebuilt several times. Explore the abbey ruins here and view the fascinating exhibition in the visitor centre. Day Six – Lanercost Priory, Hadrian’s Wall & Chesters Roman Fort After checking out of our hotel, we are met again by our guide and head first to the Augustinian Lanercost Priory, founded in 1166. The tranquil setting of the priory belies an often troubled history, and although the chancel and transepts are in ruins, the cloisters are beautifully preserved. From here we drive along part of Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Romans as a fortification across Britain some

Ordered in the 16th century by Bess of Hardwick, England’s richest woman after her Queen, Elizabeth I, Hardwick is a striking Elizabethan treasure and masterpiece. The lavish number of windows (at a time when glass was a luxury) inspired the neat phrase, ‘Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall’. The rooms are filled with opulent furnishings and tapestries, preserved by successive generations of the Devonshire family before they passed the house to the care of the National Trust. The Hall is lovingly decorated for the festive season, festooned with beautiful wreaths inside and natural willow creations and evergreen foliage outside.

The house was also used as a key filming location for The Duchess and boasts opulent interiors in the saloon, library, drawing room, and more. At this magical time of year, the hall is decorated in all its festive finery, with the highlight being the twinkling State Apartment. You can also go for a wintery stroll in the surrounding parklands or enjoy a mince pie in Kedleston’s restaurant.

The Garden of England is Britain’s oldest county, steeped in thousands of years of history and full of treasures, from romantic castles to medieval manors. We discover some of these historic gems during our festive break including Bodiam Castle, a 14th-century moated castle and Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, as well as the oldest cathedral in England, Canterbury Cathedral. With these architectural splendours all evoking a magical festive ambience, this break is an enchanting way to enjoy the countdown to Christmas.
ITINERARY Excursion One – Bateman’s & Bodiam Castle This morning we visit Bateman’s, a 17th-century house which so enchanted Rudyard Kipling when he discovered it that he made it his home in 1902. With its stone-mullioned windows and Sussex oak beams, it’s a romantic retreat that has been left virtually untouched since Kipling’s tenure here. During our visit, the ground floor is decorated for a Kipling family Christmas with a roaring fire, traditionally decorated tree and a table set for dinner, all adding to the cosy, festive feel of an Edwardian home at Christmas. We continue on to Bodiam Castle, one of Britain’s most picturesque and romantic ancient fortifications. This archetypal 14th-century moated castle with a ruined interior gives us a glimpse of medieval splendour and boasts an original wooden portcullis, spiral staircases, tower rooms and battlements. After dinner this evening, we enjoy an interesting themed talk from a guest speaker.
Today it houses the collections of the late antiquarian Denys Eyre Bower including Japanese lacquer, Ancient Egyptian treasures, Stuart paintings and Jacobite manuscripts. The Victorian kitchen and servants’ hall give a taste of the former 'upstairs downstairs' life of the house. Excursion Three – Leeds Castle & Canterbury Cathedral We pay a visit to the magnificent Leeds Castle, a quintessential moated castle set in 500 acres of glorious parkland. Dating back to the 12th century, it has been a Norman stronghold, the royal residence of six medieval queens and was once home to Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Latterly, it became an elegant early 20th-century retreat for the influential and the famous. Our visit gives us a chance to explore the castle’s impressive state rooms which are lavishly decorated for Christmas before enjoying a festive lunch here.

YOUR HOTEL Bridgewood Manor Hotel The 4-star Bridgewood Manor Hotel is situated on the outskirts of Chatham in the heart of Kent. The hotel is designed around a beautiful inner courtyard and offers wellequipped rooms, a bar, restaurant and health club and spa with heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room and gym (spa treatments are at an extra cost). Hotel Accessibility: Lift to all floors. No steps to entrance. Ground floor rooms.
We head to Hever Castle, the childhood home of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. Dating back to the late 13th century, this double-moated castle originated as a gatehouse and walled bailey and is home to various historic artefacts such as Tudor portraits and furniture, as well as two prayer books signed and inscribed by Anne Boleyn. The castle was lavishly restored and extended in the early 20th century by American millionaire, William Waldorf Astor. We enjoy an exclusive private tour of the castle which is beautifully decorated for the festive season with fairy lights, welcoming log fires and twinkling Christmas trees before enjoying an included lunch. Next is Chiddingstone Castle where we have time to enjoy the festive atmosphere and decorations. Set in 35 acres of beautiful grounds, the castle has undergone a number of architectural changes; from its beginnings as an early timber-framed Tudor dwelling to a rebuild to resemble a medieval castle in the early 19th century.

Afterwards we head to Canterbury, where we enjoy a guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in England, dating back to Norman times. In 1170, Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the cathedral and ever since, it has been a site of Christian pilgrimage. The cathedral contains one of England’s largest collections of early medieval stained glass while its awe-inspiring architecture includes a sweeping Gothic nave and cavernous crypt. With twinkling Christmas trees and a life-size nativity scene, the cathedral has a magical atmosphere during the festive season.

Frequently asked questions How much is my deposit and when is my final balance due? The deposit payable at the time of booking is £125 per person (£200 per person for tours by air). If you don’t wish to pay the full balance in one go; the remaining payment is due 6 weeks before departure (8 weeks before departure for tours by air). Why do I have to pay a single supplement? It is standard practice in the hotel trade to charge for single occupancy of a room as the cost of providing heating, lighting and cleaning etc, is the same regardless of the number of people occupying it. Will I get a more detailed itinerary to take with me? Yes, your full itinerary will be posted approximately four weeks prior to departure, along with your final confirmation documents. How many travellers in our group? In most cases there will be no more than 30 to 40 travellers in the group. If I choose the coach travel option what time will the pickup be? Most pickups are between 7.30am and 11am, although this will vary depending on the distances covered. The routes are finalised four weeks prior to departure, and our journeys are planned carefully to ensure that you get to the hotel in good time for your evening meal. On the way home we depart after breakfast and, if there is no en-route excursion, usually return to your drop-off point in the mid to late afternoon. Your driver will be able to provide more specific information. Will my pick up change? All available pickup points are shown for each tour. Please note however, that pickup points are dependent on Just Go! Holidays receiving minimum bookings from those locations. On occasions it may be necessary to move your requested pickup point after booking to ensure that your holiday can still operate. You will be notified of any change to your pickup with your final confirmation. Will it always be the coach that collects me from my chosen pickup point? Not always, sometimes we utilise smaller transfer vehicles to operate some pickups; these vehicles will transfer you to join the main tour coach. We do this in order to offer a wide range of pickup points and to keep overall journey times for the tour coach to a minimum. Please note: if you have booked front seats, or any other guaranteed seats through our seat reservation service these only apply once you join the main tour coach. Where will my seats be on the coach? As the makes and models of our coaches vary, we are unable to guarantee the position of coach seats at the time of booking. You will be provided with a seat number in your Final Confirmation documents. If you would prefer to reserve your seat in advance, there is a charge of £5 per person for tours in England, Scotland and Wales or £10 per person on tours in Europe, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly. Front row seats can be reserved for £15 per person on tours in England, Scotland and Wales or £25 per person on tours in Europe, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly, subject to availability. Will there be a toilet on the coach? Yes, we aim to provide an executive coach with onboard WC for all Magnificent Houses & Beautiful Gardens tours, subject to extenuating circumstances.
How much luggage can I bring? For coach holidays, one medium-sized suitcase per person weighing no more than 18 kilograms plus one item of hand luggage. For any holidays by air, the luggage allowance will vary between airlines and will be advised at the time of booking. Who is responsible for my luggage during my journey? As with all personal items, it is your responsibility to ensure your suitcase is on board the coach. Please make sure you see the driver place your luggage into the coach and on the way home carefully check you collect the correct luggage from the driver at your drop off point. We cannot accept responsibility for misplaced or damaged luggage and, whilst we will assist you with the recovery of any lost suitcase, this will be upon receipt of the courier costs. Self-drive check-in & car parking For those making their own way to the hotel by car, the vast majority of hotels offer free parking. Please ask for details on hotels where car parking charges apply. Please be aware that at some hotels parking can be limited and is not guaranteed. You should aim to arrive at the hotel no earlier than 3pm. Where any en-route excursions take place on the first or last day of the tour, you will be expected to travel to these in your own car. I have limited mobility; will these breaks be suitable for me? These breaks offer a varied level of activity and participants can take on as much or as little as they wish. The minimum requirement is that you are able to climb the steps onto a coach unaided and, to keep with the pace of the tour, we recommend you are comfortable to stroll for 20–30 minutes at any one time. Most properties offer a good level of access, but due to their historic nature there may be some upstairs sections without lift access, or gardens with limited walkways. Please refer to the property websites for specific access information. Most hotels featured on our heritage tours offer lift access, but if this is a firm requirement please check with our reservations staff at the time of booking. Any physical condition which may necessitate special requirements (for example, the need of a wheelchair) must be reported at the time of your reservation, and we advise that you bring a companion with you if you need assistance. Coach space and weight restrictions limit the number of walking aids that we can accept on each break therefore you must pre-book a space when you book your break and confirmation of this will be on our correspondence to you. Please be aware that the hire of scooters or wheelchairs at properties visited must be organised in advance. Will dinners be on a group basis? Yes we believe as you are travelling with like-minded people you will likely find them interesting and congenial company. Therefore dinners at the hotel will be at a specific time each evening with tables set out in 4’s, 6’s and 8’s, so you may share the day’s experiences together. Menus will be set but with three choices for each of the three courses. What do I do if I have special dietary needs? Passengers are requested to inform us of any food allergies/ requests at the time of booking and we will attempt to accommodate them, however special arrangements cannot be guaranteed. Passengers who are coeliac or follow a gluten-free diet are advised to contact the hotel before arrival to check if the diet is catered for. Some customers take their own bread for breakfasts. Customers with severe food allergies or dietary requirements are advised to make appropriate arrangements with the hotel prior to commencing their tour and speak to the hotel staff on arrival.
What do I do if I have a special request? We will do our best to help but we cannot guarantee that this will be fulfilled. If your request is imperative to your enjoyment of the holiday, please inform one of the members of our reservations staff at the time of booking. All special requests are subject to availability and general confirmation that a request has been noted or passed to the supplier is not confirmation that your request will be met. How long will we spend at each excursion? Visiting times are based on the recommendation of property staff, and we aim to allow ample time to explore and take refreshment. Railway excursions Please note that journeys on certain railways may not always be steam hauled, even when pictured in this brochure as being so. Diesel locomotive trains are sometimes in use on certain journeys over which, regrettably, we have no control. Are the excursions guaranteed to run on the day specified in the brochure? Our brochures and itineraries are put together sometimes over a year in advance therefore, unfortunately, things may change before the tour takes place and some excursions may be swapped from one day to another. Will there be tea and coffee in the hotel room? Yes, in the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands however, this facility is unfortunately very rarely available in European hotels. Do I need a passport? All our Europe, Ireland, Channel Islands and Cruise holidays are sold on the basis that you are a British Passport holder. It is your responsibility to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of the tour return. On holidays by air within the UK you will also need a form of photo identification. You need to advise us if you are not travelling on a British passport for port security checks. Why do I need insurance? At Just Go! Holidays we are committed to ensuring you are taken care of every step of the way, from the day you book, through to the last day of your holiday. Occasionally passengers fall ill or have an accident whilst on holiday preventing them from travelling home with the coach or on the return flight or requiring medical care when on tour in the UK, Channel Islands or Ireland. This may impact you financially. For European tours, it is a company policy that all our customers hold some form of travel insurance, not necessarily the insurance Just Go! Holidays can offer. What do I do if I’m not completely happy? It is imperative that if you are unhappy about any aspect of your holiday, you raise the matter IMMEDIATELY with the coach driver, tour manager or accommodation provider. If you fail to do this and deny us the opportunity to rectify the matter at the time, we shall not accept any responsibility retrospectively. If the matter cannot be resolved immediately, it is a condition that you write to us, quoting your booking reference, with the details of your complaint so that we may commence an investigation.
Hotel accessibility information If anyone in your party has mobility issues, please inform us at the time of booking. It is a minimum requirement that you are able to climb the steps onto a coach unaided. Please read the tour itinerary carefully to make sure it is appropriate for your mobility level. We also hold accessibility information for each hotel featured on our holidays, and are able to advise if lifts and/or ground floor rooms are available. Further details are shown in this brochure and are also available online at justgoholidays.com/accessibility. If you have any queries on hotel facilities in relation to mobility, please contact us immediately for detailed information. Please note: tour itineraries, use of leisure facilities and hotel entertainment will be subject to local and government guidelines valid at the time of travel.
