10 THINGS TO DO IN LONDON – FOR FREE!

6

Book now on 0330 013 0048 or omegabreaks.com/london

There’s no shortage of things to do in London, but if you’re new to the city, it can seem a little daunting especially when confronted with the maze of a Tube map. So we’ve done our best to come up with some key highlights to point you in the right direction. Better still, you can enjoy all of these things for FREE! So read on for some inspiration… 1. THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE What could be more British than going to watch the Changing of the Guard take place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace? The 30-minute ceremony takes place every day in summer at approximately 11am Monday to Saturday and at 10am on Sundays (the winter timetable may vary). It is free to watch and a great opportunity to take some photographs!

2. MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES London has no shortage of fascinating museums, including the Science, the Natural History, the British Maritime, and the Imperial War Museum. This along with an exciting array of art galleries from the Tate Modern to the National Gallery where you can admire the work of Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet and Picasso to name a few.

3. SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP Oxford Street is one of the most famous shopping areas in London, with nearly every high-street brand you can think of and then some. However don’t forget to pop into iconic department stores like Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Liberty and Fortnum & Mason for some traditional favourites and luxuries too. These famous stores are worth a visit for their window displays alone!

4. MONOPOLY MARATHON Got your walking shoes on? Then this Monopoly challenge may be up your street! Your challenge is to walk the Monopoly Board of famous place names starting from the Old Kent Road through Euston Road, Fleet Street onward to Piccadilly and finally to Park Lane and Mayfair, without it costing you all your little green houses. The location of the ‘Go’ square remains a mystery, though Ordnance Survey claimed in 2010 that it was at Lambeth North Tube Station.

5. TRAFALGAR SQUARE No visit to London would be complete without a trip to Trafalgar Square to take in the view of the famous Nelson’s Column, a monument built to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

6. MARKETS Again there’s no shortage of markets in London: Camden, Brixton, Petticoat Lane and Portobello. This is your opportunity to grab a bargain or something a little unique, with everything from art and antiques to clothes and handmade gifts on offer. London’s markets are also a great chance to enjoy something delicious to eat!

7. PARKS AND GARDENS Searching for a bit of open space in the city? Then look no further than the beautiful parks and gardens of London. Take a stroll along the Serpentine in Hyde Park, admire the beautiful flower beds of St James’ Park, or view the contemporary art and architecture of Kensington Gardens.

8. BRITISH LIBRARY Visit the British Library and learn something new! A copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland is sent to the British Library, resulting in a collection of more than 150 million items. From books, manuscripts and newspapers to prints and drawings, there is plenty to discover.

9. PRIMROSE HILL The short stroll up to the summit of this grassy hill is well worth it for the stunning views across London. On a sunny day, you can take in landmarks like The London Eye and The Shard. It’s also a nice place to sit and relax!

10. COVENT GARDEN STREET PERFORMERS The West Piazza of Covent Garden Market has street performers to entertain you every afternoon. Good acts can draw huge crowds and the performers love to get audience members to help them with their act. All performers are licensed and have passed an audition to entertain here.

AND FOR A LITTLE BIT EXTRA 1. KEW GARDENS

3. MADAME TUSSAUDS

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew need little introduction and are rightly renowned the world over. Founded in 1759 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, Kew Gardens has one of the most comprehensive plant collections in the world and is also an important botanical research centre. Highlights of the 300 acres of inspirational gardens and landscapes include the famous Palm House and the Treetop Walkway.

This famous wax museum is your chance to get up close and personal with your favourite stars. Pose and take pictures with everyone from The Royal Family and Mo Farah CBE to The Terminator and Audrey Hepburn. The exhibits are regularly updated and reviewed so expect plenty of well-known faces.

2. HMS BELFAST Take a boat trip or water taxi to the floating exhibit HMS Belfast, the most significant surviving Second World War Royal Naval Ship. Here you can explore all nine decks of the historic warship and experience what life might have been like as a crew member at sea from WW2 to 1963.

4. LONDON ZOO Situated at the northern edge of Regent’s Park, London Zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo. There are more than 750 species of animals to discover with areas including the Land of the Lions, Meet the Monkeys, Penguin Beach, Tiger Territory and Gorilla Kingdom. What’s more, your visit will help support the zoo’s conservation work in more than 50 countries around the world.

You can buy an Oyster card and have it delivered to your home address before you travel to London by visiting: https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk or you can buy one at a TfL Visitor Centre when you arrive (there is a TfL Visitor Centre located opposite platform 8 at Euston station).
