Winter/Snow Season

We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both of our golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, etc. on either golf course. Damage caused by this activity becomes apparent in the spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Great Time to Join

The golf course has never been better in my 16 years here as the Director of Golf. Robert DiPietro and Taylor Halinski have done an outstanding job maintaining the course at championship caliber throughout the season. Full Privilege Memberships, Mid-Week Memberships, Corporate Memberships, and Social Memberships are offered. Our new Single Membership has been extremely popular. Dues are inclusive of all cart fees and range fees. Contact Tanya Polli, Marketing and Sales, at 787-1800, Ext. 102. Make 2023 the year you entertain a golfing lifestyle.

Our 4,000-square-foot indoor Short Game Arena is another great reason to join us here at Somersett Golf & Country Club. The arena remains the only of its kind in Reno and is available for members only and is a shared asset with the UNR men’s and women’s golf programs.

Golf Tip

By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

Putting

Putting can be a great winter activity. There is no other aspect of your game that can improve your game as much as working on your putting skillsets.

1. Practice aiming your putter to hit the ball on your desired line.

Simply place a golf ball on the tail end of a ruler or yardstick and do your best to roll the ball the entire length of the stick. You can stand behind the ruler and aim at a specific target. If your putter face is aligned to the back edge of the stick, it makes sense that you have aimed in the exact direction that the ruler is pointing at. Reducing errors in aim will allow your putting

stroke to have a better flow, leading to improved putter face control through the stroke. Simplify, simplify, simplify! There are fewer moving parts in a perfectly aimed putter. 2. Remember your Tempo – 2:1 OR as I like to teach, Ap-Ple-Pie. Two counts back and one count through regardless of the length of the putt.

All putting strokes are less than one second in total elapsed time. Length of roll on the ball is varied by length of backstroke in accordance with a constant 2:1 tempo.

BOARD PROFILE

Lance Fithian

SOA Treasurer

OCCUPATION:

Chief Operating Officer of Aurigin Capital Management

YEARS IN RENO:

Three years in Reno, 5 years in Tahoe.

ORIGINALLY FROM:

Born in Indiana and further raised in the Chicago suburbs.

WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THE BOARD?

Upon moving to Somersett, I began engaging with residents and hearing of existing issues within the community. I started attending Board meetings, listening to fellow residents, asking questions, interacting with Board members and the community management, and reading documents. I observed that the community faced diverse issues, whether it was safety, fire prevention, finances, maintenance, lack of communication, etc. I observed how the current Board, community management, committees, and residents positively engaged these issues. This made me optimistic vs. disenchanted and pushed me to get more involved in improving the future of Somersett.

WHAT STRENGTHS/SKILLS DO YOU BRING TO THE BOARD?

Due to high inflation and our aging infrastructure, our budgeting and Reserves accounts will be of the utmost importance. It will be a very delicate balance of holding down assessments, maintaining our facilities, making improvements, and strengthening our Reserves to maintain our property values. This is closer to my background and training which may allow me to quickly add value. My career has required me to negotiate and operate across different countries, regions, languages, cultures, and religions. This has increased my humility, adaptability, and resolve in accomplishing the task at hand. I have 25 years of experience in financial and operational management, compliance, audit, and anti-money laundering.
