Located in the heart of Apt, France, the proposed site is a large sunken plaza with the foundation of an old house still present. This sunken plaza is filled with trash, graffiti, and very little vegetation surrounding the plaza. Little activity happens at the plaza despite being in the densest area of Apt, this is due to the fact that there is simply nothing that this plaza offers to those living in Apt. This proposed site is idea for a dealership due to its close proximity to the shopping area, easy access, and an opportunity to create a place for not just car enthusiast but for the local Apt community to use. The dealership not only focuses on the cars that are showcased inside, but to catering to those that look upon this building on a daily basis. Not only are the cars showcased, but the building itself is looked upon in the showroom of what is the Apt community.
Bmw motors apt The chosen site stands out within the overall context of the Apt community due to this large area being undeveloped in a dense urban town. Compared to other open areas in the limits of Apt, there are large greenspaces open to the public, but the majority of these spaces lie along the outer edges of the community. This observation lead to one of the key aspects of the design of the dealership, to create an articulated landscape within the heart of the community.

BMW iNEXT VISION
Basic geometry of carbon fiber exterior of the iNEXT VISION. Lines were then staggered in thicknesses to Lorem simulate the flexing of the INEXT VISION. ipsum
Taking inspiration from the pattern and design found in BMW’s concept model for the iNext Vision, a fully electric autonomous vehicle. The pattern used on the exterior skin of the structure is designed to resemble the tires of the iNext Vision, which are a part of the frame of the exterior carbon fiber body. The staggered widths of the linear grid of the facades skin furthered the resemblance of the flexing and turning of the body as the vehicle turns. This strategy then allowed the voids of the facades skin to allow an LED Mesh to be used behind the frame to allow light from the mesh to pass through during the evening, thus giving the effect of the flexing body of the iNext Vision.

For the interior of the dealership, there needed to be an interpretation of what the future of the car industry could hold. When entering the dealership, visitors should feel as if they have entered the world of tomorrow. In order to achieve this, inspiration was taken from the interior finishes and detail of the iNext Vision. The copper like trim adds subtle detail against the white palate of the showrooms in order to take as little attention from the cars on display, while also symbolizing the change to clean energy for means of transportation. As visitors progress through the showrooms, they will begin to feel as if they are moving at warp speed. By blending the design of the headlights of the iNext Vision with the motion blur effect by using various lengths of lighting strips along the interior walls, staggered at various highest and widths, visitors are truly transported through time.

With the dealership being in the center of a French community, there were design elements taken into account in order for the dealership to be enjoyed by local residents of the surrounding area. With the dealership standing at two stories and all surrounding existing structures standing above two stories, many residents have visible sight lines onto the roof of the dealership. Rather than having a simple roof, a green roof is used to allow for the residents on the upper levels around the dealership to take in views of the lush roof top garden of the dealership.
With the dealership being located in the densely populated center of Apt, France where a large quantity of the existing structures are taller than two stories. There needed to be a design feature that allowed the dealership to stand out in the crowd. The solution to this was to design a display case that moved in and out of the structure during hours of operation so that cars on display can be seen from the busy corridors of the nearby market. This then attracts the attention of nearby foot traffic from the busy shopping area to the dealership and its public plaza.

Due to the dealerships orientation, a large portion of the structure is exposed to the south facing sun. This orientation allows for natural lighting as well as for the implementation of solar panels on the roof, idea for maximum energy production. But due to this orientation and the amount of glazing on the south faรงade, there is a higher risk of a greenhouse effect occurring within the structure. In order to avoid this problem, a custom louvre system was fitted for the sloped glass roof. This system is designed to allow for large amounts of natural light and solar heat to enter during the winter months, while blocking harsh solar heat gain during the summer.

20 || 89 thermal baths at hacienda yaxcopoil
20 || 89 Thermal Baths stems from two meanings, one in which corresponds with to the hacienda’s precise coordinates at 20.7463° N, 89.7227° W. This first ideation for the name of the proposed project surfaced from the structures having a strong X and Y-axis, similar to coordinates of latitude and longitude. The second ideation of meaning behind the name, is that the corresponding coordinates of the hacienda correlate to the range of temperatures of the thermal pools located at the thermal baths. The proposed spa for the Hacienda Yaxcapoil aims to create a cohesive experience between the old and the new through the articulation of its circulation throughout the structure and the surrounding landscape. This approach to the design of 20 || 89 Thermal Baths is achieved not only through the design of the structure, but is further enhanced with its selection of materials and changing elevations as one enjoys their experience at the Thermal Baths. From plan to section, there is a continued language being created through the series of terraced slabs of materials, from the sunken garden to the second floor
20 || 89 thermal baths at hacienda yaxcopoil
Hacienda Yaxcopoil is a Yucatan plantation located near Merida, Mexico which dates to the 17th century. In the Mayan language, Yaxcopoil translates to “the place of the green Alamo tree. Due to the sites large land area of 22,000 acres, Hacienda Yaxcopoil was considered one of the most important rural estates in the Yucatan area. The area in which the thermal baths occupy, once held a factory located in the rear of the estate.
20 || 89 thermal baths at hacienda yaxcopoil
This idea of creating an articulated landscape through terraced slabs of materials stems from the Hacienda’s close proximity to ancient Mayan ruins. These ancient ruins of the Mayan culture are iconic for their monolithic slabs of rack stacked on top of one another to create stepped pyramid temples.
To compliment the form of the elevated platform, sunken plaza needed to echo the same style of the Mayan temple. By flipping and inverting the Mayan temple form, a uniform dialogue of elevation change between structure and landscape can be formed.
Using the basic form of the Mayan temple, it was then elongated to correlate with the proportions of the thermal baths structure.
By building up areas of the site to the elevation of the second level through the landscape, allows there to be a sense of enclosure and privacy for visitors to the Thermal Baths. All of the Thermal Baths located at 20||89 are elevated to the second story in order to enforce the idea of relaxing in privacy so bystanders of the surrounding community are not able to see directly into the Thermal Baths from any point on the ground level surrounding the structure.
20 || 89 thermal baths at hacienda yaxcopoil
The use of elevation throughout the design of the structure is not only present aesthetically, but with the intent to enhance circulation and programmatic layouts for the relaxation process of visiting a thermal bathhouse. The First level is designed to allow visitors the opportunity to become one with nature as they bathe under wooden louver systems opening up to the natural landscape. As visitors begin to fully circulate throughout the entire first floor, they will then make ascension to the second story through the only interior staircase connecting the two levels. As visitors progress to the second story, they are greeted with the opportunity to relax with a personal massage. The primary reason for this is to allow visitors to transition fluidly in the relaxation process before taking a plunge in one of the various pools.

Current
Current is an outdoor center located in Boulder, Colorado along the Boulder Creek. Current aims to incorporate and invite the surrounding diverse community of Boulder to partake in an active and social life at its facility. The entire facility has been designed to not only welcome the community but to also give back to the community by meeting the requirements for the Living Building Challenge. Throughout the design process, decisions were strategically made to design a structure that took full advantage of its location. From the structure’s form to the activities that are intended to be utilized at the facility, the design relates to its location in the greater Boulder, Colorado context.

The donut shape was then split into two geometries, one keeping the same language of its original from while the other became hinged to allow for more views of the creek and presence along Boulder Canyon Drive. This also allowed for the existing bike path to not be disturbed and to flow naturally around the structure.
Rotating and mirroring the form to create a complex that opened to the bank of the creek, while also allowing there to be a storefront to be used in the elongated section of the form facing the north, which also has street access from the heavily used Boulder Canyon Drive. This new orientation allowed the design to bridge the creek which housed a neighborhood and hostile on the opposite side of the creek.

Prosolve370e is a decorative architectural module that can effectively reduce air pollution in areas when installed near traffic ways or on building facades. The modules are coated with a superfine titanium dioxide (TiO2), a pollution-fighting material that is activated by ambient daylight. It requires only small amounts of naturally occurring UV light and humidity to effectively reduce air pollutants into harmless amounts of carbon dioxide and water. When UV light cuts through smoggy air and hits the titanium dioxide on the tiles, a chemical reaction occurs between the tiles and chemicals in the smog—mono-nitrogen oxides, or NOx. The modules are a functional, yet highly decorative modular ornament. This façade system was idea for application on the north façade due to its decorative design, while also aligning with the designs end goal of achieving net positivity. This system also allowed the retail section of the structure that is facing Boulder Canyon Drive, a high traffic road, to become more of a store front to draw consumers into the space. To design for the structure to be net positive, design measures were taken at every level of the design process. One of the main strategies that was taken into consideration was the use of solar energy to supply for the facility and community as well. The roof on both structures of the overall facility were both pitched upward towards the southern sun for maximum solar radiation for the instillation of photovoltaic panels.

Daffin park Sports Complex
Daffin Park Sports Complex is a facility located in Savannah, Georgia that aims to integrate the urban landscape into its design by using the landscape as a tool to reach out to the surrounding community. Daffin Park is the largest park in the Savannah area that offers many activities for the community to partake in, but the park itself is divide by unnatural geometry. The facility is designed to be open for the community to traverse the park with ease and to create a unified park experience. .
The tennis courts and Multi-purpose field at daffin park are in close proximity to one another, but disconnected by the intersecting Cedar Road.
By eleminating Cedar Road, circulation between the two programs could be smoother and fluid, while also elementating a road way that became a divider of the overall park.
keeping the form
Once the bridge between the two programs had the opprotunity to be connected to one another, dynamic forms were able to be produced.
To encourage the flow in and around the stadium, its sides along Victory Drive and the interior of the park were pinched to improve flow around the park, while also attracting onlookers from the roadway.
Circles were created around the perimeter of both the multi-purpose field and tennis court. Once put in place, the two circles were connected by tangent lines between the two.
Benched
Keeping the original orientation of both fields opened up a unique opportunity for seating in the stadium that differed from the neighboring historical baseball field of Grayson Stadium.
By lifting the earth to create seating in both programs allowed there to be two ways to enjoy a game. One being of the more formal tradition with fixed seating, the other being of the leisurely way of watching a game on while lying in the grass.
Curving the mounds for seating allowed to continue the form and language of the stadium. This new landscape feature also created an informal barrier rather than implementing fences to keep onlookers out.

nascence
Nascence is a skyscraper submission designed for the 2018 eVolo Skyscraper Competition. Over the course of 9 weeks, three fellow architecture students and I analyzed what issue we would like to address with our design. For the design, we were to take into consideration sustainability, urban development, and/or advanced technology in order to reach a solution to the issue of our choosing. For our entry, we took on the issue of cleaning highly air polluted areas while also creating clean energy for the selected area, Mexico City. The design uses geothermal strategies to create clean energy for Mexico City thorough its volcanic geothermal plant. The energy that is created through this process is also used to power and charge the sentinel pods that are housed within the skin of the structure. These sentinels fly to areas with high levels of air pollutants and filter the air daily. Not only do the sentinels clean the air, the skyscraper itself filters the air that passes around Popocatepetl to further filter the polluted air..
We first started our design process with designing the sentinel. For our sentinel to perform ideal for its function, we needed a design that aligned with the structures overall function.
We first started with a basic geometric shape that could be used to make a cohesive skin. A triangular void is then taken out of form to create three separate fins for the sentinel to fly in all directions. After creating our sentinel, we began to relate the design of the sentinel to the design of our form.
The fins of the sentinel’s form are rotated up and then elongated for verticality. Each fin was then pulled outwards at the bases for structural support of our form and to house mechanical elements.
Multiple rings were then added to the form to offer more structural support to the form, house the collection basins, and the geothermal power plant. Finally, the fin facing most towards to Mexico City was elongated to house the sentinel pods and allow the structure to sit soundly onto the sloped side of Popocatepetl.
nascence
Mexico City, North America’s largest city, has a population of 8.8 million people and a greater population of 21 million people if including the entire metropolitan area. Due to the geographic location, pollution is constantly trapped within the volcanic valley. At an altitude of 2,240 meters, there is less oxygen in the air to enable hydrocarbons to fully combust, which subsequently creates a high level of soot pollutants (black carbon). Vehicular pollution is currently the primary air pollutant in Mexico City, as proven by the 3.6 million vehicles and the additional 200,000 personal vehicles that are added annually. Statistics show that yearly 75-80% of the days in Mexico City are considered to have poor air quality. Additionally, more than 75% of energy consumption comes from fossil fuel burning, which increases the severity of the problem. As Mexico City grows, the immense pollution that is consequent of the city’s energy consumption could suffocate the valley entirely.

Filter 1:
The first layer is a fiberglass filter that removes large air particles. This is 99.7% effective at catching particles as small as 3 micrometers
Filter 2: The second layer is a carbon filter that traps odor and gases in sorrounding air
Filter 3: Ball and Socket Joint:
The joint allows for rotation of the three propeller stabalizers which defines direction and allows the sentinel to dock vertically onto the facade of the structure
UV Lamp: The interior is lined with an ultra-violet lamp, which kills the bacteria from the filters and stops micro-organisms from reprodcing
Intake Vents:
Intake valves draw in air to internal impeller fan
The third layer is a fine fiberglass filter that will remove smaller air particles like pm2.5 and bacteria
Stainless Steel Ionizer:
This electo-static technology produces negative ions to clump particles together and magnetically attracts them to the filters to be removed from the air
Pollution Tracker:
This sensor is combined with GPS electronics to track pollution hot-stops on the principle of light scattering
Propeller Stabalizers:
Bladeless propellers take advantage of headwind and forces it through internal ducts to generate a downward flow and allows the sentinel to lift. Its angled design creates a negative pressure causing the air to accelerate
Outake Vents:
Outake valves extracts moving air when flying
Exterior Coating: The sentinel is coated with a superfine titanium dioxide, which is activated by ambient light and can fight against pollution
Aerodynamic Design:
The aerodynamic design allows for induced wind to be drawn in
Docking Connection Joints:
These joints provide geothermal energy to re-charge sentinels. Additionally, these joints allow for a connection between the sentinel and the central vacuum structure
Recessed Docking Station:
The recessed design of the docking station allows for the sentinels to be flushed with the skin of the structure when attached
Vacuum Ducts:
These ducts connect the central vacuum structure to the sentinels in order to clean the particulate matter from the filters
The sentinel is designed to dislocate from the building in order to filter the center of Mexico City daily. Each sentinel acts as an independent unit soaring through the sky in order to collect pollutants in the air. The sentinels have homing capabilities which allows for a docking system. The docks are designed to house the sentinels for purposes of charging and vacuuming.
The addition of nascence to Mexico City will improve both the air quality and the ability to create clean energy. With better air and energy quality, Mexico City will begin to build a healthier life.
nascence
The skin of the building contains hexagonal filters spreading across the angled facades of the building. Each individual hexagon has three layers of filtration designed to be cleansed by the encasing structure. The structure acts as a series of apertures designed to hold the filters as well as vacuuming the surfaces to kill any germs with ultraviolet light.
