PERMEATE Performance House

BRIEF:

After experiencing the city of Charleston, translate the details defining the character of the city into a concept that reflects them architecturally. Develop a public performance center depicting these observations and show how the focal elements define the atmosphere.

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

Deformation through organic permanence.

ELUCIDATION:

The pedestrian experience of Charleston is guided by an urban classicism that is literally rooted and woven into its coastal context. Weathered moss-covered stones, broken edges and uneven bricks roll imperfectly along the ground, all revealing an identity specific to Charleston. Lush organic life deforms elements of the city as it transforms its architecture, contrasting the historical permanence of Colonial development with the inevitable dominance of the natural earth.

The core structure of the performance center is inspired by the dominating influence of organic life that permeates through Charleston.

By the roots of trees and vines that writhe through tilted gravestones and cobblestone roads creating curvilinear structures out of once rectilinear designs. The plans for the structure and flow of spaces within take cues from the mutated spaces and forms, underscoring the push and pull of the organizing elements.
