A Layman’s Guide to Bim Modelling and Its Benefits BIM stands for Business Information modeling. In simple terms it can be understood to be an actual construction of the building that is done in the virtual or the computer world rather than the real one. BIM modeling is basically a 3 dimensional model that you can rotate and move on the screen just like a real object. It has become quite popular in the modern construction industry because of its capability of providing precise and accurate information on the strength and stability of a building. The BIM also gives other information like geometrical data and internal dependencies of the several building components. Uses and Benefits of BIM modeling 1. Managing change – all information pertaining to the building structure is located in one central location and hence making one change automatically creates replicas in all the different sections of the building to inlay give a 3D visualization of the altered building structure. This will naturally help in faster documentation and also communicating the same between different teams involved in the project. Using the current building structural design, engineers can even experiment with more options in the virtual world to create the most sustainable design. 2. The greatest benefit of BIM is the greatly improved quality of construction as it enables pre-fabrication. 3. The overall Lifecycle of the construction project is greatly reduced due to the speedy communication between the various teams handling varied responsibilities. It may be noted that the models created by BIM not only contain architectural data, but also contain extensive details such as that related to load bearing structures, the pipes and ducts used in various places in the structure and all other information that includes sustainability information also.
