was ecstatic when I received the acceptance letter from the Associate Degree Nursing program more than two years ago. My moment of joy came to an abrupt end when I realized this could become a heavy financial burden. I carried this burden with me until I made a trip to A-B Tech’s Financial Aid department. There I would learn of grants and scholarships available for anyone and even single moms like myself. . During my second semester, I applied for scholarships and received the H. D. and Kay Crews Endowed Scholarship and Lavender Fund Scholarship. Generous people in our community like Dr. H. D. and Kay Crews, the people of the WNC Community Foundation, and many others give back to our community enabling people like you and me to have second chances. I owe my success to these fine folks along with the faculty and staff of A-B Tech for all their hard work and dedication in helping students achieve their career goals.

fter a successful 16-year career as a chef, I chose to devote myself to public service. I began the Emergency Medical Science program at A-B Tech in 2008 and immediately discovered a new passion for medicine and helping people in a time of need. . I successfully juggled my commitment to my family, my job with Buncombe County EMS as a North Carolina EMT-Intermediate and my job as a Ski Patroller at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort while attending A-B Tech fulltime. Throughout the two years, I was consistently at the top of my class. My instructors told me I have demonstrated mastery of cognitive skills in the classroom, as well as clinical skills in the field. Outside of work and school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children as much as possible. I look forward to my career as a paramedic with Buncombe County EMS, and continued work with my local Girl Scout troop and Vance Elementary School.

eceiving the scholarship has given me the opportunity to pursue a career. Without the stress of worrying about finances, I was able to concentrate and excel in the classroom. I am very proud of my achievements. More importantly, my daughter has witnessed my hard work and determination and she is very proud of me. I plan on going to the next level in my education to be a Nurse Practitioner. I have already begun working with Buncombe County EMS and I find it very fulfilling. I believe the hands-on experience that I received from A-B Tech’s curriculum a will only benefit me when pursuing my second degree. While at A-B Tech I have met friends I will have for a lifetime. I have a great amount of respect for the teachers and staff and I know I can call them anytime.

ttending A-B Tech’s Cosmetology program has truly been life changing for me. When I first enrolled, I was a problem-filled individual grasping for a chance to change my life. I was a single mother of three working on a CNA’s salary and barely making it. The thought of quitting the job that was barely getting me by to attend college full time made me so nervous. I had no clue how I would juggle the balls of doing well in college, working, and continuing to be the mother that I needed to be for my children. The day-to-day routine helped me to find myself again in doing what truly makes me happy. Now that I have my degree, I can teach, open my own salon, or travel the world as a platform artist. The sky is the limit. I now have the tools I need to make the most of my life.

he Lavender Fund Scholarship made a vital impact through my educational course. Without this scholarship, I would not be to graduating at this time, as I would have had to find a quick job to provide for my children. I am so glad I chose A-B Tech, as it provides the community with the opportunity to earn a college degree for a desirable career by having scholarships, such as the Lavender Fund, to assist students to make it to graduation day. I was so pleased with all of my teachers at A-B Tech. They were all dedicated to student achievement. After graduating in Medical Office Administration, I plan to take summers courses to finish my major in Office Systems Technology. I am very grateful to A-B Tech as it has helped me transform my life. I can now look forward to a successful future for my children and me.

am graduating with my associate’s degree in Automotive Systems Technology and would like to tell you a little about my experiences at A-B Tech. Receiving a scholarship has created a very positive experience while attending college. I received the Grace Joan Love Schneider Endowed Scholarship this past semester and it enabled me to spend more time on homework and studying outside of the classroom because I did not have to work as many hours at my job in order to pay for school. I am very thankful to the scholarship donor and hope that many more scholarships will be awarded so that others will have the same positive experience that I did. The next step for me after graduation is becoming a mechanic at Skyland Automotive, where I currently hold an internship. I would like to thank God, my family, the Grace Joan Love Schneider Endowed Scholarship Committee and the Automotive Systems Technology department for my success at A-B Tech.

hen I started taking classes at A-B Tech in 2008, it was my fifth attempt at college. My first attempt was in 2004. I enrolled and withdrew over and over again. It’s not that I didn’t want to get my degree, but I just couldn’t. I suffer from severe social anxiety. As long as I can remember, I have been leery of other people. I tried to tell some of the adults in my life, but they didn’t seem to listen or believe me. Shortly after I turned 16, it got worse and I didn’t want to even leave the house. After a few years, it got a little easier and I began the cycle of starting and quitting - until now. A-B Tech made a difference. I enrolled in the Human Services Technology program and I was listened to. My instructors understood and worked with me. I am completing my third consecutive semester of classes. When I become a counselor, I am going to make sure every child is heard and understood.

The Academic Regalia W
earing of academic regalia is one of the oldest and perhaps least understood of all the traditions associated with collegiate education. Formal academic dress has been worn, often required daily, in European colleges and universities since 1321. In contrast to today, the regalia may have provided needed insulation against the damp cold of unheated medieval university classrooms and libraries. The first code on academic dress in America was devised in a conference at Columbia University in 1895, and was based upon the academic dress in use at Oxford University. The American Council on Education appointed committees to review this code in 1932 and 1959. The academic regalia that is seen on campuses today meets the requirements of the Academic Costume Code published in 1960.

he most informative part of the regalia is the academic hood, worn around the neck and shoulders, extending down the back. Hoods are often omitted for Bachelor’s degrees in the USA. Master’s hoods are three and one-half feet long, while Doctoral hoods are four feet in length with panels on each side. The edge of the hood is bound with velvet in the color appropriate to the subject in which the degree was earned (as listed above). The lining of the hood shows the official colors of the institution which granted the degree. The standard academic cap is appropriately known as a mortarboard or trencher. Some American universities award caps used by foreign universities
Gowns for those with Bachelor’s degrees have pointed sleeves; those with Master’s degrees wear oblong sleeves, and holders of Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees wear bell-shaped sleeves. Most gowns are black, but some exceptions may be noted. {For example, those with degrees from Columbia University are authorized to wear blue gowns; Dartmouth College, green; Harvard, Cornell and a few others, red.} Gowns of those with Doctoral degrees have velvet facing on the front and three velvet stripes on each sleeve. This velvet may be black, or colored to indicate the field of study in which the Doctorate was awarded. The most common colors found in the velvet stripes on doctoral gowns and found, likewise, in the velvet located on the entire edge of the hoods of the doctoral apparel, as well as on the hood-edges for those holding Master’s degrees, are listed here.
