01 Stream of Sanctuaries: Aquatic Sanctuary Location: Los Angeles, California Year: Fall 2021 Academic: Studio 4111L - Bobby Brooks Memorial Interdisciplinary Studio: Indigenious Village Instructor: Andrew Wilcox Collaborators: Justin Paredes-Sison, Jamie Guevera, Natalie Chung Award: Bobby Brooks Studio Award for Best Team and Design “SANCTUARY” (n.): 1. a sacred or holy place 2. a place that provides safety or protection Stream of Sanctuaries aims to encompass feelings of security, spirituality, comfort, and refuge through multiple interpretations of the Circle as used during the 1990s by the Indigenous community and non-Natives. Whether embedded within the landscape or guided through the journey of the buildings, the site provides a diverse set of experiences of a modern approach on the Circle and how those spaces are sacred moments connecting the Indigenous community with non-Native people. In this project the site is broken up to four main sanctuaries with one designer handling each portion. Jamie Guevera (Architecture) is in charge of Peak Sanctuary. Natalie Chung (Architecture) is in charge of Spiritus Sanctuary. Justin Parades-Sison is in charge of Celebratory Sanctuary. I am in charge of Aquatic Sanctuary. Togther we came up with the over design lanugage and strategies and then invidual work on our own sites, yet still communicaitng and relating back to the overall theme “Stream of Sanctuaries.”

Aquatic Sanctuary is filled with water features that help transport an individual into Indigenous cultures. It is a sacred and intimate space buffer from the public realm of slauson avenue. It seeks to create a relaxing and restorative experience for the people of CIELO along the cultural library and gallery. Along the Slauson corridor there is a separated pedestrian and bike lane to help slow down flow of traffic. There is a mound that separates the public realm of Slauson and Aquatic Sanctuary. The form of the site is derived from the water god and is often associated by different types of aquatic features: a gas form, water, thunder, and lighting. The Mist Ring, Spa Mountain, Reflection Cave, and Water Jet Plaza are abstracted representations and explored to create varying aquatic experiences. Firstly, The mist ring frames the water jett plaza creating a view to the sky and creates a cloud of mist bearing the similar properties as clouds of which the Zapotec are referred as the cloud people. The water jet plaza is the main sanctuary space for the Aquatic sanctuary which is an intimate gathering space where water jetts can be turned on or off and can double as a small event space. In addition, it is protected by a grove of trees allowing users to experience sanctuary. The spa mountain is a place where people can submerge into the water on top of the hill to relax from the challenging and complex work at Cielo. The reflection cave has a reflective pool of water to create a meditative and reflective space for people who need time to themselves.

02 Green Hive Location: Portland, Oregon Year: Spring 2021 Academic: Studio 3121L - INSIDE OUTSIDE: Hybridizing Architecture and Landscape Instructor: Steven Chavez Collaborators: Kamran Ghandy, Justin Paredes-Sison Green Hive strives to accommodate affordable housing for low-income families and singles with 72 housing units harmonized with amenities including, but not limited to: center for social housing, cafes with restrooms, restaurants, medical office, social service office, and mini market Our project resides over a 200’ by 200’ cap over the 405-freeway extending to Portland residents an opportunity of a shared spatial experience through hexagonal forms. Also, the hexagon forms found under the trellis and throughout the site allows for small scale mobility. Furthermore, the Green Hive infuses each resident’s home with equal sun exposure, while simultaneously creating discovery moments of the main plaza and the green band from above. Additionally, Green hives alleviates the imposing 120’ height of the residential space to human scale by implementing a hexagonal facade with ivy plantings in the framework. Moreover, this project aims to naturalize new plant life into the existing ecology to synthesize landscape architecture and architecture

03 Watts Vecinades Location: Los Angeles, California Year: Fall 2020 Academic: Studio 3111L - Rasquache Paramétrico Instructor: Kevin Finch Individual Work Rasquache is a Nahuatl term originally meant to be derogatory and now has been redefined as a description of Chicanx Urbanism by urbanist author James Rojas. Cultural expression, spatial justice, and implementation of public services that cities have failed to provide for disenfranchised communities are some of the trademarks of Rasquache Urbanism. Watts Vecinades explores the poetic integration of landscape systems as a design framework for a comprehensive plan in Watts, Los Angeles. The focus of this project is to express connection between systems flows, movement, cultural appreciation, hydrology, and ecology through the use of parametric 3D modeling tools. Parametricism maximizes the spatial and volumetric requirements for the optimal efficiency of measurable environmental systems. Furthermore, it seeks the intersection of socio-cultural, environmental, economic, and visual representational systems. The visual and cultural sensibility has the ability to generate a positive ecological framework for residents that been forgotten by city planners and policy makers. Instead of focusing on the Eurocentric notion of individual ownership of land and property, this project will treat a neighborhood block as a shared space, co-owned by the residents of that block. Space will be maximized through parametric processes for the optimal generation of energy, water, food, shelter for the block’s residents. Landscape, as a term in western languages, is synonymous with picturesque notion of scenery. Landscape implies a complete control and commodification of that which is otherwise unorganized. Through strategic exploration of site requirements and our own beauty allows us to define one’s own picturesque. Our goal is to reject the Euro-centric notions of traditional landscape imagery and implement a reimagined neighborhood across disenfranchised neighborhoods across Los Angeles. 22 Project 02: Rasquache Watts

Chavez Ravine Case Study Mapping - This mapping describes the history of the Chavez Ravine and how the city used eminent domain to forcefully removed the residents in order to create Dodgers Stadium. This map shows the timeline and the former communities that were once prosperous.
Watts Vecinades Mapping - The mapping shows the relationship between synanthropic animals and humans in green corridors around Watts. Furthermore, the crops used to sustain the residents can be found on the top right proceeded by the hydrology marked by the blue lines. Portfolio by Justin Sze

04 Angeles Hub Location: ROW Downtown Los Angeles, California Year: Fall 2019 Academic: LA 2111L: Spatial Design Labatory Instructor: Steven Chavez Partner Work: Junan Yan Angeles Hub is a project located next to the Art District in downtown Los Angeles. This site borders the historically rich urban commercial center known as ROW DTLA. It is a 30 acre that has been repurposed into a mixed-use development area including over 100 retail stores, restaurants, and commercial workspace. As a result, Angeles Hub is designed to expand the ROW DTLA by creating new experiences for Los Angeles residents through parks, waterplay plazas, housing, commercials, and viewpoints. The mixed-use community is also designed around a train station that connects central Los Angeles to other various points around the Southern California. Furthermore, its fosters an economical, residential, and urban green space. Lastly, the overall shape of the design is meant to creating a journey for people who want to access the rooftop gardens and in the end reward those with an observation deck that has a viewpoint of the entire site. The intent of Angeles hub was to engage the community in ROW DTLA and create a connection with the rest of the city through the train station. While simultaneously offering a variety of experience and spaces to social.

05 Personal Works Photography: Canon 7d mark ii, Canon EF Zoom 24-105mm F/4.0, Adobe Lightroom Year: 5 years Instructor: Self Taught Fine Art: Graphite, Ink Pen, Watercolor, Colored Pencil, Charcoal, Mixed Media Year: 10 years Instructor: Alice Cunningham, Ryan Williams My personal works include photography pieces, fine art pieces, and 3d works. My personal take on art and photography is essentially different forms of visual storytelling, a way to get a glimpse into the world of the artist. I like to share my story through these various medium whether I move my pen across the textured paper or capture a moment in time through the lens of my camera. Furthermore, I think it is important as a designer to have many outlets of inspirations because at the end of the day we design for the experience and wellness of the people. I believe that it is also important to meticulously study the world we live in. On one hand, photography to me has allowed me to travel to various cities across different continents and experience various cultures. On the other hand, art has allowed me to creatively translate worldly scenarios into visual stories. I plan to continue both of these forms of visual storytelling as it helps me grow not only as a person but also as a designer. I draw a lot of my inspirations through these mediums and aspire to share with the rest of the world.

The world has become globalized and the importance of empathy has risen in the past few years. Through photography I am able to learn and capture the essence of other cities, especially the relationship between the built environment, the inhabitants, and the natural landscape. As designers we are to innovate solutions to improve the livelihood of our people. Photography is one of the tools that allows me to integrate these relationships into my own work.

Spatial Strings | Chicken Wire, Strings “Spatial Strings” strives to explore the notion of spatial continuity. The chicken wire massing constitutes the overall volume while the strings act as a guide for the viewer by weaving through the void in the underbelly created by the chicken wire. Furthermore, the strings pierce through the space in between the chicken wires at various planes yet binds the overall space together creating a movement as one follows the intricacy of “Spatial Strings.”
Introspection | Graphite, Colored Pencil Whether we focus on the intricate problems or view the big picture from afar; the perspective we choose to believe in rely on our choices. In introspective there are two images, the cityscape from the distance and the local street view. By offering two sides of the same coin, it’s serves as a reminder for when we encounter a problem that we have the ability to look at it through a different lens.
Hardened | Ink Pen, Colored Pencil, Watercolor Hardened is a story about a solider going through war and has to toughen it out until it is all over. He is beat, tired, and clouded with emptiness, yet he continues to battle on. He lights up a cigarette and takes a break. The soft colors juxtaposed by the hatches creates a tug-of-war relationship between the humanity he has left against the world that’s coming at him.
