BLACKPOOL AND THE ILLUMINATIONS!

Issue #

wasted no time at all as we literally dumped the luggage in the room, quickly freshened ourselves up and were walking along the Promenade in no time at all! My first reaction was simply, “WOW”. Despite it being quite busy it wasn’t as noisy as I thought it was going to be so I was actually pleasantly surprised. I was a bit apprehensive about my anxieties but I really had nothing to worry about as I loved everything about the place, the atmosphere was just electric and everyone seemed so happy to be there (including ourselves lol)!

I’ve not had so much fun nor laughed so much in years, can’t wait to go back next year.

When Mum surprised my Sister, best friend Kerry and I with the news we were off to Blackpool, if am honest I was really apprehensive and unsure at first. I spent a couple of days in Blackpool as a toddler so don’t remember a thing about it. That night I decided to do some research and spent time finding out all about Our first port of call was of course, Blackpool Tower! Mum wasted no time Blackpool and what it had to offer. As the evening progressed that knot and had prepaid for our tickets so we in my stomach began to fade away and before I knew it, I was sitting giggling away to myself and was actually really excited. When the day finally arrived we packed the car, said our goodbyes to Dad and the lads (my nickname for our 2 dogs Angus & Bruno) and were all rather giggly and excited. We arrived in Blackpool with the sun shining and received a lovely warm welcome from Caroline, the Hotel owner, who told us everything we needed to know for our trip. Well we

didn’t have to wait for ages in the long queue, we were fast tracked through in the prepaid line…Phew! Didn’t fancy standing in the other line I can tell you! Word to the wise, if you are thinking of going to Blackpool, please do try to pre pay for events as it will save a lot of time. Patience is not my greatest virtue if am absolutely honest as Mum well knows, nor is standing in large crowds of people so she made sure to make our time in Blackpool as easy as possible. On entering the Tower we made our way up the Grand Staircase passing the Tower Ballroom and Circus and headed straight for the 4D Cinema and Tower Eye! Well Mum was a wee bit nervous at first but I eventually encouraged her to stand on the glass and look down, I can’t explain how exhilarating it felt to be so high up, standing on a glass floor, just amazing. I could see the Irish Sea and the famous Blackpool Promenade below so clearly and was very grateful we had such fab weather with clear blue skies. Afterwards we headed into Madame Tussauds, where we got up close and personal with some celebrities from the world of music, sport, TV and comedy.

My favourites were Ed Sheeran, Paddy McGuinness, and Ant & Dec! The illuminations were spectacular and I could have watched them for hours on end, simply breathtaking. But we kept the best till last though and that was definitely Blackpool Pleasure Beach, we had so much fun and didn’t want to leave. It was jam packed with the most exciting theme park rides and attractions I’ve ever seen. My favourites have to be the Nickelodeon Streak, Avatar one and The Steeple Chase, just brilliant and the best fun I’ve had in years!

Hobbies - Geek Culture

By Autist, Jacob Watters

Firstly I’d like to start of this article by thanking “JUST Jordan” for giving me this great opportunity to write in their monthly newsletter, I hope this can be as much use for them as it is for me. As someone living with autism I find it particularly difficult sometimes to hang out in large crowds or engage in activities which are often considered to be social, at the same time however a common trait of being on the spectrum which I can say certainly affects me is the fascination with specific things, whether it be hobbies, special interests or something as simple as a favourite TV show. I personally have many such interests’ one of the main ones of course being what some might call “geek culture” that’s why three years ago when I first learned that Scotland had its own Comic con I was positively blown away by excitement, a place I could go and be with like-minded people, a place where I could make obscure references and not get made fun of, a place where I could go and express my love for anime, video games and various other items of geek culture. I won’t focus too much on my first two experiences as I mainly want to focus on this year’s convention but to sum it up briefly the first year I was nervous, I didn’t really cosplay (apart from a make shift eyepatch but I don’t really count this as my first proper attempt of cosplay) I mainly stuck with my friends and in all honesty at first I wasn’t sure if I’d back the following year. In the end a few months before I decided I would, I started on my first proper cosplay (which consisted of a mask and wig) this is when I feel I was first properly exposed to the benefits of cosplay. As soon as I put on that mask it was like all my anxiety and inhibitions were swept away, I made so many friends that year, participated in things normally would have made me nervous. Naturally as soon as I could, I bought a ticket to this year’s convention which will be the main focus of this article but perhaps more so I want to discuss the importance of cosplay and the opportunities/benefits that it can provide for those on the spectrum from my own perspective. Day 1 of the convention for me personally, is usually when I experience the most apprehension and while it is only a small amount it is still present, after all if you're going to be walking about in a **pink morphsuit**all day around hundreds of strangers it'd only be natural to feel a little nervous! Regardless, it all soon disappears once you arrive at the venue and step into the hall.

JUST JORDAN | Issue #

The day was wonderful, I walked around all day free of fear of judgement whether it be interacting with strangers who happen to share a common interest or catching up with old friends. The whole convention was like a break for me as someone on the autistic spectrum. I met and made a lot of new friends just in the first day, it was great, something which would normally be of great difficulty to me was made easier all thanks to being able to attend an event that was a convergence of many of my interests. Although I feel one of the biggest highlights of this event for me and why I feel this sort of thing is so important for me living with autism, was a sudden realization half way through the convention. During both the first and second day my phone would constantly go off, many of my friends calling or messaging asking where and if I wanted to meet up during the con and hang out, this lead to the realization that before my second convention I had only a small group of friends in actuality, I was (and still am to a degree) very introverted, I kept to myself mainly due to my inability and lack of self-belief in my ability to interact with people. Only a year later do I realize that not only do I have great fun attending these events but that I myself have improved dramatically as a result, by placing myself in an environment like a 'comic convention' I have not only given myself a chance to express my love for my hobbies but I have also given myself a chance to meet and socialise with people. Making new friends and interacting on a social level is a huge achievement for me as it’s often one of the main problems I suffer with. If you're aware of something you're more likely to over-analyse it (as is a common trait of Asperger’s) by putting myself in an environment of familiarity and interests, my mind becomes preoccupied with my hobbies that it doesn't even begin to worry about things such a socializing.

I highly recommend these events for someone on the spectrum and who shares similar interests, while you'll more than likely be anxious the first time round, it’s all worth it in the end. Having the chance to connect with people in a ‘social circle’ where I feel comfortable and confident, and knowing I no longer need to worry about it, has given me a new lease of life and one which I intend to enjoy to the MAX!

Do you have a hobby you’d like to share with our readers in the next edition of ‘JUST Jordan’? I’d love to see you all in action so please do send me some photos and I’ll try my very best to publish as many as I can in our Special Christmas issue. A Grandmother’s Wise Words! By Jeanette Elliot As a grandmother of a grandson on the spectrum may I presume to offer some words of advice. We are continually reminded that everyone on the autistic spectrum is different. Got it! However surely they have that in common with all humanity. We are all different. Being autistic is a lifelong condition as is being human and all humanity has to learn how to fit in, to become socially acceptable, obey behavioural rules etc. To take just one of these ‘have to learns’, for instance diet - well who has not been told to, ‘finish your dinner or no pud’ or, ‘no you can’t have chips and burgers every day for dinner’. We all have to learn to modify our diet to keep us healthy or to allow us to be flexible enough to fit in when we move out of the home environment. Having said that most people retain the odd dislike and preference, sometimes fairly irrational for instance, love chips, boiled potatoes and yuk to mashed potatoes and autistic people are no different if maybe more extreme. How to modify the diet? Certainly not by bullying, nagging or emotional blackmail, for instance just to please mummy. Belief that it is possible with patience, encouragement and imagination is crucial to success. Encourage a trial of a new food, just a tiny amount. Yuk! You don’t like it? That’s alright most folk don’t like it at first. Make sure you don’t make it a big deal. There’s another day coming. By the way it doesn’t always work especially if applied wrongly. My oldest daughter (not autistic), and now grown up and a grandmother still hates butter beans with a passion having been ‘made’ to eat one every time they were served. Yes you can detect the cardinal sin of bullying to enforce conformity. Black mark for me!

Changing a much loved food by a subtle change of cookery method, presentation or addition of another ingredient is another ploy. Say for instance a tiny amount of parmesan stirred into the plain pasta so it is invisible to the eye. Did you enjoy that? No need to point out the change/addition immediately but certainly eventually pointing out their cleverness in relishing the change. Mainly I would repeat PATIENCE ENCOURAGEMENT, IMAGINATION AND BELIEF THAT IT IS POSSIBLE. Tap into the experience of others. Social media can produce floods of advice. You are not alone. Lastly I would never claim that this is a definitive or exhaustive view of the subject but hopefully it is enough to point you in the right direction.

“The Enchanted Forest”

To end our October break my Mum took my sister and I to the Enchanted Forest up in Pitlochry. It was a magical sound and light show at night time in the heart of Faskally Wood and was truly out of this world and something I've never seen before! My favourites were the larger-than-life sparkly interactive character and the walk-through ‘wall' of lights. There was also a Storytelling Yurt, food huts, campfire where we could toast marshmallows, a mulled wine and hot chocolate stall, a stunning music water show and much more. Now it was October so if you are planning on visiting The Enchanted Forest then please remember to wrap up warm, wear sensible footwear (I wore my hiking boots) and take a waterproof just in case! We had a great time at the show and again were lucky with the weather as it was a clear night but cold.

What did you guys get up to in the holidays, drop me a line and let me know as am really interested to hear what you’ve been doing. jfernando_1997@hotmail.co.uk or suzfernando@yahoo.co.uk

“Scottish Variety Gala Performance”

My Mum and I try to have at least 1 night a month just for us. It’s our special time together that allows us to catch up on recent events, discuss what’s next in my ever growing busy schedule and more importantly giving us time to have a good old chinwag !! This month our night out was in Glasgow at the Clyde Auditorium where we attended the Scottish Variety Gala Performance, I just love the design of this building as it alway’s reminds me of an Armadillo. I’m extremely proud to be Scottish especially as Scotland is so full of talent from singers, dancers, musicians, actors, DJs, comedians, gymnasts and am sure much more. The Scottish Variety Gala Performance showcased just that, a huge variety of pure Scottish talent and they didn’t disappoint either. We watched some of the finest talent in Scotland, in the magnificent Armadillo….oops I mean Clyde Auditorium and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was Donnie Munro, DJ George Bowie, Nicholas McDonald, Melanie Masson, Original Bay City Roller - Alan Longmuir, I Ran With The Gang Cast, Glasgow Philharmonia, Musichoir Scotland, McCallum School of Music Pantheon Glasgow Club - Theatre Co, The Highland Divas, Gleadhraich, Clark Stewart, Liam Dolan and the guest presenter Cat Harvey. Sadly the Spartans Resurrection Display Team were unable to perform on the night due to safety issues but I still enjoyed the night all the same. If your thinking of somewhere to go on a night out I definitely recommend taking in a show at the Clyde Auditorium, not just for it’s stunning architecture but for sheer entertainment and value for money too. Thanks Mum, I had a great night! xxx

Your Hobbies & Passions

When somebody asks why you've chosen this hobby Cause they think it's an idea that they push aside? I believe the answer you give them is Because it makes you happy and feel good inside There are many hobbies out there Some common and some wild For some they start later in life And others have done it since they were a child For examply, I have a love for the arts Both performing and drawing When I write stories and draw pictures I feel relaxed And when I sing and act I imagine I'm in front of a crowd with their applause roaring In the past when someone asked me about my hobbies I used to be quiet and act coy But now I'm not afraid to admit it because Now everyone understands my interests make me happy and bring me joy So whether it be art, cooking athletics or even working with cars Please continue your passion Because that's what makes you who you are!

Film Review Look out for special reviews next month on Film, Cartoon & Anime Reviews right here in “JUST Jordan” But for now here is a little taster of what’s to come:

The Girl On The Train Hi, my name is Dale Garton, I am autistic and I love to go to the cinema to see all types of films from thrillers to comedy! “Just Jordan” has been kind enough to let me do a film review feature in her newsletter. This month, I am going to be reviewing The Girl on the Train, which I went to see last week in Glasgow.

This is a thriller about a girl on the train who watches into other people’s lives. She is a divorced woman who has an alcohol problem. One night she gets involved in a traumatic incident which leads to murder but she can’t remember what happens and the film unwraps the events of the night. I found it a very moving film. Interesting and captivating. I didn’t find it scary but it was a thriller. Rating: 5/5

Drive: This Decade's Leon Hi Jacob here again and I will be reviewing a slightly older film but nonetheless something which I consider to be one of my favourites of this Decade. I'll of course be avoiding spoilers and I completely discourage watching the trailer for this one as it completely misrepresents what this film is. Drive is a very interesting film in my opinion, its Director Nicholas Winding Refn really takes the phrase "every frame is a painting" to such high levels of film making, every scene in this film has such life to it. The night time scenes in particular are my favourite, the way the lighting has been organised for each and every shot is truly memorizing from the way the director has blended use of natural light, as well as urban lighting is a visual master piece. But enough with my obsession with the technical genius of film, what is it actually about?

JUST JORDAN | Issue #

Ryan Gosling stars as "The Driver" a socially inept but talented driver who works as a stuntman by day and getaway driver by night. One day the driver begins to develop a unique relationship with his next door neighbours -a single mother and her child- all is well until her husband who is in debt to the mafia gets out of prison. Out of concern for the safety and wellbeing for his neighbours whom he has grown to care for, the driver embarks on a quest to make sure they leave his new found friends alone. While this premise sounds typical of an everyday action film what we get instead is what I very much consider to be a masterpiece of cinema, an emotionally charged tale of one man's quest to become a better person but is unfortunately restrained by his own circumstances which he created. We are presented with a beautiful character arc in this film, watching The driver grow from a quiet shut in to a man who cares deeply for those around him to the point of risking his life is a truly amazing thing to watch unfold. You really do root for him by the end of this film, a movie hasn't made me care for this sort of protagonist since Leon: The Professional which coincidentally these two films share a lot of similarities. Another aspect of this film I love is the soundtrack, from the iconic sound of "A real hero" by College & Electric youth to "Nightcall" by Kavinsky the soundtrack helps set an amazing tone and backdrop to this noir-arthouse film. Lastly without spoiling too much, I'd like to talk about my favourite scene from this movie. Not to give too much away, but at some point in the film The Driver and his Neighbour Irene step into an elevator, they are in the elevator with a hitman sent to kill them both. They kiss, then five seconds later the driver breaks the kiss and turns to the hitman, what follows is predictable but is so emotionally charged -thanks to Gosling's amazing acting in this role. It is genuinely upsetting to watch not because of what he does but because you realize what he has done has greater implications for the rest of the film and that this is the real driver. I'd highly recommend this film to anyone, especially lovers of classic film and good directing, Nicolas Winding Refn in my opinion is on his way to becoming one of the best directors of this century. Rating: 5/5

Chloe’s Special Day

Throughout the years as a Volunteer raising awareness of Autism & Asperger’s Syndrome I’ve met so many wonderful families going through a diagnosis. One family in particular who will always’s have a special place in my heart is little Chloe’s. I met young Chloe and her lovely family some time ago during a charity function and we hit it off immediately, sharing so many wonderful and similar stories with each other.

JUST JORDAN | Issue #

18

Chloe was diagnosed with autism at the tender age of 3 with many similar trates like I once had at that age, so being able to share some of my own experiences with Chloe’s Mum Margaret and Dad Steven, I hope has helped them cope a little easier with Chloe’s development. We’ve stayed in touch and whenever they’ve needed some help, support or information I’ve alway’s tried my very best to help. Chloe and her Mum recently took part in our charity group at the local Marymass Parade in Irvine, with the morning beginning with clear blue skies and beautiful sunshine. Chloe was in great spirits and enjoying her Saturday out with Mum, during the parade we would hand out sweets, balloons and charity pins to the spectators whilst Chloe held onto her lollypop and autism flag as she giggled with joy. Towards the end of the 6 mile parade the heavens opened, drenching each and everyone of us in our autism T-Shirts, but what a wee trouper Chloe was, as not once did she moan or complain but simply just enjoyed her day out. Chloe’s skills were very limited when we first met her, but with the dedication and commitment from her devoted parents Chloe is now trying new foods, drinking from a cup and talking a lot more too which is just fantastic. Recently my family and I were invited to Chloe and her baby sister Cadence Christening, and what a truly special day it was too. We felt extremely honoured to have been invited along and to witness there heartwarming ceremony. I’d like to personally extend a thank you to Margaret & Steven for inviting us, we had a wonderful day.

Please do keep your requests coming in and I’ll do my best to feature them in next months edition of JUST Jordan. To submit your entries please send to :

“Dear Jordan: Are vaccines to blame for my daughters autism? ” Anonymous. Hi : This is a very difficult question to answer and there are lots of conflicting views out there. Your best source of information is through this website link- This is the National Autistic Society’s statement in relation to the causes of autism http://www.autism.org.uk/get-involved/media-centre/position-statements/causes.aspx The National Autistic Society are also clear that there is no link between autism and the MMR vaccine but you can read further information on this view herehttp://www.autism.org.uk/get-involved/media-centre/position-statements/mmr-vaccine.aspx

“Dear Jordan: How can people who have autism learn meaningful job skills?” Donna, 20 from Largs Hi Donna: People with autism have the right to employment but finding the right type of job can sometimes be very difficult. If you are just about to leave school or have left school already, a good starting point may be Skills Development Scotland, who run in most areas. They offer career advice and guidance and can often help you to find the right supports within your area. It is important to understand what you are good at but also what type of job may be suitable for you. You could try out different jobs by volunteering and this is a good way to increase your skill base. You may need some support to do this, so again local volunteer centre’s could help you to decide on the types of roles that may be more suited to you. Ask your Job centre’s advisor as they are also a good source of support. Preparing in advance and writing down the questions you would like to ask, can be helpful. Prospects employment support in Glasgow, run by the National Autistic Society, can also offer you support and guidance and they can be contacted on 0141 221 8090. There is a good online resource called the autism and employment network. This may be useful for you to access further information. http://employment.autismnetworkscotland.org.uk/ These books are recommended by the National Autistic Society on their websitePerks, S. (2007). Body Language and Communication: A Guide for People with Autism Spectrum Disorders. London: The National Autistic Society Johnson, M.L (2004). Managing with Asperger syndrome: A Practical Guide for White Collar Professionals. London: Jessica Kingsley Publications Stott, B. Tickle, A. “Dear Jordan: What do people with autism need when they become adults? Anonymous. Hi there, this is a difficult question to answer but what we do know is that all adults you have an equal opportunity to lead a fulfilling life. In order to do this, some people may need some guidance and support in order to find what makes them happy. Adults with autism go through lots of changes in their lives and they learn to cope with different things. Autism can affect people throughout their lives and it is important to understand what is important to people. It is important for people to understand what their rights are and have support to communicate their needs. Advocacy support can be of benefit to some people. People who support adults may benefit from reading a book called “Ageing with autism – a handbook for care and support professionals”, which can be bought from the National Autistic Society’s online shop. For girls, there is a great online resource called SWAN, that you can link in to through facebook. It is a facebook group specifically for women and girls.
