The Story of JUST LC Hanin Lataifeh, PSDD
The IFMSA-Jo story begins here, in the outskirts of Northern Jordan, where there lies one of the most prestigious universities in the Middle East, the Jordan University of Science and Technology. Established in 1986, JUST has always been a strong foundation that nurtured the future leaders and pioneers of our society, hence why it wasn’t strange for four medical students to come up with the idea of bringing in an international medical students’ association into this country for the first time ever in 2006. And just like we unlocked the door for the beginning of the IFMSA-Jo era, we continue to unlock doors and set new standards with our quality of work and desire to thrive. Considered the biggest local committee, it brings us great pride being able to put out record numbers of high-quality projects every year, with the unmatched creativity and passion of our members. To cut it short, here at JUST LC, we never fail to impress!

Ever since the establishment of IFMSA-Jo/JUST Local Committee in 2006, the Deanship of Medicine at JUST University has shown their support and encouragement in multiple aspects. One of the main events that we have in IFMSA-Jo is the National General Assembly (NGA). Last year, IFMSA-Jo/JUST Local Committee had the honor to host NGA XV that was under the patronage of our Dean Dr.Nail Obeidat. Throughout our collaboration with the deanship, we were provided with all the facilities and amenities that were needed for the NGA. Also, we have gained unique recognition, trust, and respect from all the externals that we dealt with during the preparation for the NGA. In addition, our deanship has portrayed their continuous support by collaborating and overseeing the annual IFMSA-Jo/JUST Local committee promotional campaign; which is a significant event in our LC that introduces the newly accepted students in our faculty to IFMSA and gives them the opportunity to become members of this great organization. Furthermore, the presence of our deanship during this campaign has given us legitimacy and a strong presence in our university as a student-run organization. In the end, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to our deanship for their continuous encouragement and trust; as their support has been essential for the achievements accomplished by our Local Committee. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with the deanship in the years to come.

A Message from the Team of Officials Obadah Qandil, President
Dear Family, As this term draws to a close; I deliver you this message on behalf of the entire 2019/2020 Team of Officials. At the beginning of this year, our ambitious TO set out to create the best IFMSA experience our members could ever have. Building on the success of the terms that preceded us, we moved head on to ensure that we accomplish the goals and apply the principles IFMSA-Jo was built upon. As the year progressed, we were confident we were on the right path. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be a challenge, and our activities were grounded to halt. However, the Team of Officials proved to be worth the challenge; quickly adapting their projects to fit the situation. During the lock down our team worked hard to be creative, intuitive, and learned to think outside the box. We held many online sessions and provided awareness campaigns in public adhering to the national safety guidelines. We like to start our posts with “Dear Family” as we believe that what we do here brings us closer together, we like to use “#La_Familia” because we set out to create a welcoming environment within JUST LC for all members to thrive and feel like they have a home away from home and a second family they can depend on. IFMSA is and always will be a student-run organization that serves you, shapes the leaders of tomorrow, and gives those who have the devotion and energy a place to shine and build their achievements. Thank you all for being a part of this year’s term and we hope you stay active and motivated throughout your IFMSA journey!

More Awareness, Less Road Victims
Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) are considered the 9th leading cause of death worldwide, claiming the lives of nearly 1.25 million people annually, with an average of 3,287 deaths a day. Therefore, this project was created with the aim of raising awareness amongst medical students, and elementary school students as well. Two steps have been accomplished successfully; the first being a conference that was held at King Abdullah University Hospital where students were taught how to act in case of road accidents; from taking the correct actions before the arrival of the ambulance, to assessing the situation's severity, as well as managing it in the best way possible. Doctors were invited to talk about their experience in managing such cases in the ER and ICU, and some road victims were also invited to talk about their experiences and how they were managed before they reached the hospital.
The next step was held in Om-Habiba Elementary School for the purpose of educating more than 300 children from grade one to three about road safety and road traffic accidents; as it is crucial to start raising awareness from a very young age when children start to learn about crossing roads and playing on the streets on their own, exposing them to a number of dangers if not careful enough. Three different sessions were held in classes and some were held as outdoor activities focusing on different topics including traffic regulations in general, rules for riding buses, riding bicycles and playing in the streets. Mindcology
This project was created with the aim of giving an overview of the most common psychological disorders medical students suffer from and how modern psychotherapy approaches these disorders. A workshop was held in Owl Cafe where Dr. Ann-Katrin Bockmann Ph.D Psychology, Medical License as Child and Youth Psychotherapist- was able to teach 32 of our members about the techniques used to stabilize unstable patients (for example a patient presenting with suicidal thoughts), and learning which methods are the most effective. They also got an insight into how we as future doctors should manage our emotions in order to stay healthy while dealing with patients who have suffered immensely, so that it doesn’t have a negative effect on us. Finally, a few mind exercises that can be performed whenever students feel the need to relieve stress and Boarding Sessions anxiety and regain focus on the present were showcased. This step was a huge success and we hope to achieve many future plans to continue providing help to medical A dream of a large number of medical students is to students! continue their studies and specialize in other countries. Almost all students know the requirements to specialize abroad, but few know how to achieve them. Therefore, this project was made with the aim to teach our members about the matching systems and how to enter a highly competitive residency program. Through Zoom sessions, doctors from different residency programs were able to talk to students about medical specialization and higher studies on the domestic and international level. Dr. Mohammed Abualia, Dr. Moutasem al Jundi, Dr. Adam Bataineh, Dr. Hareth Rawashdeh, and Dr. Motasem Salameh all conducted separate sessions discussing the USA, UK, Germany, and Qatar medical residency programs. They guided the participants through the process of attaining an internship abroad, visa-issuing, and traveling for as cheap as possible, and they successfully expanded their students’ horizons and thought process, showcasing the opportunities available and how to attain them!

Use Not Abuse
Antimicrobial resistance continues to be an issue that requires further public awareness amongst our society. “Use Not Abuse” was created with the aim explaining antimicrobial resistance, how it arises, the wrong practices regarding antibiotic usage, and how all these actions can be corrected. Two events have been completed to accomplish this aim, the first being in the campus of The Jordan University of Science and Technology, and the second in King Abdullah University Hospital. Volunteers were stationed at booths where they talked to university students, patients, and visitors about the correct usage of antibiotics. We also had walking groups that talked to people in various clinics and different departments to enhance our reach to the public. Thankfully, over 280 people were able to fill our surveys that were made to assess our visitors’ knowledge with regard to this topic! Thank you to our OCs and volunteers who made this event happen. Also, thank you to DOSE Cafe and ﻣﻜﺘﺒﺔ رمfor collaborating with us throughout this entire project and its running steps!

Seed and Stem
This project is primarily awareness oriented; in which volunteers discussed with the public what stem cells are, and moved on to talk specifically about cord blood stem cells. They brought on the topic of the extraction of cord blood, it’s application in the medical field as a means of disease treatment,and most importantly, they encouraged the visitors to spread knowledge and invest in the stem cell bank present in Amman; BabyCord Jordan! Thankfully, they were able to target a large number of visitors who gathered a big interest in this important topic! One pregnant family were even interested in saving the cord blood of their upcoming newborn and asked for the contact information of BabyCord Jordan! SAMS Medical Mission
The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is a well-known global medical relief organization that works mainly towards providing free medical care and medication for Syrian refugees in Jordan. Every year, JUST LC is always honored to be sending volunteers to help out in their missions; where they are distributed to different sites to work in the registration rooms, triage rooms, and pharmacy. In addition to easing the process of communication by translating between patients and physicians. Â In October of 2019 and January 2020, our students participated in two medical missions that covered Syrian refugee camps, hospitals & outpatient clinics across many governorates in Jordan including Irbid, Amman, Al Tafeeleh, Madaba, Al Mafraq, Al Zarga, and Al Ramtha.
Fortunately, with the skillful hands and humanitarian work of the doctors/nurses/medical employees who've come to the region and our volunteering students, free services have been provided to over 6,000 beneficiaries from all age groups. This serves to prove the importance of volunteer work and the great impact such missions have on patients in need, and we would like to wholeheartedly thank this great organization for allowing us to take part in it.

People of Determination
This SCORP/SCOME joint project was created to educate students on how to correctly handle and manage disabled individuals, as there is always room to continue raising awareness on disabilities, and how through proper management, disabled individuals can lead healthy happy lives as active members of society. This is to be targeted through workshops and visits to disability centers, which were accomplished in this project’s latest steps. A two-day workshop was held in which two wellstructured presentations about locomotive, sensory, and mental disabilities were explained. These presentations explained the most important types from each category, highlighted the different forms of discrimination in society, and cleared common misconceptions about disabilities. After that, a training session was held where students were separated into groups and given different situational cases about the disabilities that were mentioned in the presentations to see how they would deal with them as future doctors.
The second step included a volunteers visit to اﻟﺨﺎﺻﺔ اﻻﺣﺘﻴﺎﺟﺎت ﻟﺬوي اﻟﻤﺒﺘﺴﻤﻴﻦ اﻷﻃﻔﺎل ﻣﺮﻛﺰ Apart from the children really enjoying themselves, and having an exciting, fun-filled day, our hardworking members felt confident in their efforts to raise awareness about children with disabilities, and the special attention and care each individual child needs, in order to not only break but destroy the stigma circulating around disabled individuals, and their ability to really be incorporated as a functioning member in society. We believe that constant support must be provided to the organizations and institutions who work tirelessly to improve the quality of life of such individuals, be it through frequent visits to raise morale, or supplying them with the medical care and equipment required in order to provide the best level of care possible.

Gender-Based Violence
On December 7th 2019, a group of volunteers paid a visit to the Rosary Sisters School - Irbid with the help of advocates from The Jordan Women Association to discuss with young students about gender-based violence. This has always been and continues to be a very critical issue we face in our modern society, where a person becomes a victim of discrimination by the sole reason of the gender they are born in. During this event, two speakers from the Jordan Women Association; Mr. Jamal Jet and Mrs. Montana Taim, gave a lecture where they talked about the different types of violence, the psychological, economical, and social impact of gender based violence, and what to do if subjected to them.
Fortunately, we have noticed that the students’ understanding of gender-based violence had increased by 80% after conducting some prelecture and post-lecture evaluations to assess their knowledge towards this issue. This is hopefully the beginning of many future steps we plan to undertake, from future school visits to public campaigns, all with the purpose of raising awareness and spreading the correct knowledge to people from all age groups and all different backgrounds. More You, Less Moo

Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, providing they have accurate information, and the support of their family, the health care system and society at large. Between June 21st 2020 and July 4th 2020, an online Facebook event was created with the aim of providing awareness about breastfeeding in Jordan’s every home. Multiple posts regarding the benefits of breastfeeding were published to hopefully have a positive effect so that people won’t consider breastfeeding a burden but as a blessing for the mother and her infant.
Fight, Believe, Hope

Reproductive cancers are cancers that occur in the reproductive organs. These are cancers that are located in the breast, cervix, uterus, vulva, endometrium or ovaries, and can also be located in the prostate, testicles and penis. From June 28th 2020 to July 11th 2020, an online Facebook event project “Fight, Believe, Hope” was made to increase public awareness and education on the risk factors, signs and symptoms of such cancers, in addition to describing the benefits of early detection and screening of reproductive cancers!

On July 13th 2020, our members enjoyed a get-away from the stress of the outbreak (whilst complying with the COVID-19 prevention guidelines) in an adrenaline-filled hiking trip! The trip took place in Al Salayta (Aya) valley in the beautiful Madaba governorate, where the members enjoyed walking between the fascinating rocks, zip-lining, and rappelling from 10 meters high, all with the help and supervision from hiking experts at 'Adventure Pros'! It was a very memorable trip thanks to the participants, OC, and our lovely sponsors; Garage-ﻛﺮاج, Shelter Coffee Drive, Firefly Burger, The Hive, JO. LION, and Calma Space!

“Sports not only build better athletes but also better people.” On August 11th 2020, our LC's sport fanatics gathered at King Abdullah II Gardens and formed 5 teams that participated in this term’s JUST LC Football League (in compliance with the COVID-19 guidelines). It was a day full of fierce competition and excitement as they got their adrenaline flowing and competed to win several prizes!

DNA Up Close
It is proven that one of the best ways to learning a new topic is gaining the practical knowledge for it, and our latest SCORE project took this quite literally with their latest project; DNA Up Close which took place at Princess Haya Center for Biomedical Techniques at The King Abdullah University Hospital. The 3-day workshop allowed medical students to take their studies in molecular genetics to the next level where they were able to attend laboratories to observe all the processes done regarding DNA extraction from whole blood samples, PCR and data analysis.
Furthermore, the students were able to better appreciate the analyzing process of DNA and how it affects our understanding and approach of the various diseases that can affect the human body thus shedding light on the importance of practical teaching alongside theoretical teaching. A special thank you goes to the Princess Haya Center for Biomedical Techniques for making this workshop happen. And of course a huge thank you goes out to the leader, organizing committee, and volunteers for taking part in making it so successful!

Mohammad Zaidan, National SecGen
Dwayne “The Rock" Johnson once said: “Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come." When I was contacted for the selection of the Local Secretary position, I just confronted my self by one question, do you want to wear the fancy shoes without doing anything special? Wearing fancy shoes without doing anything is worthless, so I said its time to make a change. I simply just made a revolution in the history of IFMSA-Jo/JUST LC by starting to improve every procedure, so every procedure would go easier from A to Z, I made a new local database and I documented everything. Next year, I got elected as IFMSA-Jo Secretary General. I chose one of the most important things to take care of; which is the members, the students who are crazy and courage enough to change the world as medical students, those hardworking individuals and their work, and that it should be documented in the best way possible. So, I started working on the IFMSA-Jo new database and a registration on the website, I also made a new fair unified scoring system for every local committee. It wasn’t easy, at first it was unappealing but with the right promotion for it, we now have more that a thousand members with everything updated. Because after all everyone wants to get recognized for what they’ve done and I believe that everything must be documented in the best way possible. This was the only way I could feel satisfied with my work. Because it is a burden and a promise that I took at the beginning of my IFMSA career, which is to give my one hundred percent at all time. I also worked on being active for the most time possible so I can issue everything on time you can say I’m always on call. Finally, I believe that everything is possible if it was fueled with passion and hard work which are one of the most major keys of success.

Saif Al-Faqih, Treasurer
My father once told me that a hard-working person succeeds in his field, but a professional person, the whole world will seek to work with him in his field. When I started my journey in IFMSA I never expected to be the treasurer for the term 2019/2020 and to write this article today for the future leaders of this organization. IFMSA made a difference in my life. IFMSA made me more mature, committed, attentive and professional. During my first year in IFMSA, I participated in two projects and that was when I started to really get curious about IFMSA. Therefore I decided to take a step forward in this journey, in my second year I became an organizer committee member in three projects, here I started to not only give efforts but also gain valuable things like friendships, responsibility, social skills and knowledge about the basics of career life. Then in my third year I got accepted as a team leader twice, and although it was a challenge, I took it with open hands, and that was when I discovered so much hidden potential in myself. Lastly, we come to the point where I'm addressing you from right now. The year I went for the position of IFMSA-Jo/ JUST LC treasurer and I got elected for it. No words can describe the rollercoaster of a journey this year has been, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Simply put, IFMSA is worth it. Studying medicine is about the future, its about not having much to give for now, but study and wait for a future where you could actually do something. IFMSA is about the moment as well as the future, it tells you that right now you are full of energy and potential, that right now you can give. To be honest, IFMSA taught me a lot of things and it made my dull, boring medical student life, the life that students stay buried between the never ending books, the most exciting, unforgettable life any student would ever ask for. I believe my decision to join the IFMSA family is one of the best decision I've ever taken and this is what I would like to say this to all medical students; IFMSA is an experience every medical student should embark on to experience the world's sweeping expanse.

It all started in my first year in medical school. I was walking around the campus when I noticed a huge tent set up with a crowd of students; and an enormous banner that wrote “JUST LC Promotional Campaign 2016/2017”. So, being the curious cat I am, I found myself walking into that tent, and I was amazed to say the least! Perhaps one of the first things that caught my attention was how kind and enthusiastic everyone was. They were eager to teach me about IFMSA and its 6 Standing Committees, and I remember thinking: “Wow! I never knew medical students can do all of that?!” Just like that, later ensued a four -and counting- year journey in which I gained the most unforgettable memories during my teenage years! I got to experience so many fields of work that most would encounter after they graduate, during their late 20s. I learned so much about improving my medical skills at an early stage, about the importance of human rights, public health, reproductive health, and how to raise awareness about them in the correct way; all whilst working and connecting with medical students from JUST and all around Jordan (even outside Jordan)! Not only was I honored to learn all of that, but I also got to learn so much about myself; what skills I excelled at, what I needed to improve, and how to properly communicate with others, whether it be one-to-one, or in a team. I managed to discover this at my own pace, whenever and however I liked; which is why I found these past years so rewarding and life-changing! One of the main things I discovered about myself was my love for creative work, which is why I chose the Publication Support Division Director position last year. I got to create the first ever local publications team, and with the help of my wonderful team members, we checked so many ‘firsts in the history of JUST LC’ from our to-do list! We got to make a Publications Booth for the first time in the 2019/2020 Promotional Campaign; where we displayed national publications from different years, all kinds of merchandise in IFMSA-Jo, and most importantly, we got to explain this kind of work to the newly registered IFMSA members! In addition, this magazine itself is the first of its kind! This year was one for the books, even in its difficult times, and I’m looking forward to the next challenges IFMSA has to offer!

I have always been looking for an opportunity to expand my horizons and develop both personally and professionally. Luckily enough, I was able to find that opportunity in the first week of my first year as a medical student at Jordan University of Science and Technology, when I found out about IFMSA. The spark that IFMSA has lit in me, the skills it taught me about medical school, about humanitarian work, and the countless other opportunities, were simply indescribable. What initially drew me to IFMSA was its unique culture, it helped me get out of my comfort zone to meet new people, and to achieve so much on the spiritual aspect of my personality by volunteering and implementing the change that I have always wanted to make. It also helped me grow as a person, by becoming more friendly, better at team work, and most importantly, more willing to help others. This amazing organization and the amazing team running it, never failed to create a feeling of responsibility inside us towards those who have no access to essentials, like a roof over their heads and a warm place to sleep, and to help people see every suffering human being as a person not just as a statistic. I believe that, not only did IFMSA enhance my basic medical skills and remarkably increase my passion for humanitarian work, it also provided me with an unforgettable experience that will stay with me forever. I will spend the rest of my years as a medical student, doing everything in my power, to continue contributing to the positive changes we are trying to make here in IFMSA, and introduce new students to our beloved family. Thank you IFMSA, for giving our medical life a whole new meaning, educating people about all these important issues that affect their lives, and most importantly, believing in a world where everyone can live a healthy life of dignity and security.
