PROJECT 1
MULTI-FAITH CENTRE AT COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING TRIVANDRUM
The design brief required the creation of a multifaith centre within an existing college campus where students and faculty alike, could come to rewind and meditate afer a stressful day.
In this project along with creation of space, form development was also a major requirement where mass, scale, balance, materials and techniques of construction and other methods of expression requires the architect’s role.

CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT
The threshold of spaces demarcated by the level of sanctity associated with the spaces influences the flow of spaces and access.
Further, play of light and scale gave each built space its own character.
EVOLUTION OF FORM
Meditation is the practice of looking within oneself. The manner in which you hold your body as you meditate greatly influences the quality of meditation.
Yoga, an ancient art of meditation, places prime importance on mudras or hand postures. Hence the hand was chosen to create the form for the centre.

PROJECT 2 RESIDENCE AT MANVILA, TRIVANDRUM
The clients included a couple, a businessman and gynaecologist by profession, two children aged 19 (boy) and 10 years (girl), and the doctor’s parents at Manvila, Thiruvananthapuram, India.
Located in a plot of approximately 680 sq.m., the design had to cater to the diverse family interests and ensure accessibility for the boy, who is a wheelchair user, to all parts of the house.
Clear zoning between the public and private areas of the house had to be taken care of.

THE SITE
The irregular shaped plot bordering a public road on all but two sides posed a challenge in the layout of spaces. However, being located in a quiet neighbourhood with residences adjacent to the site, noise control was not a major issue.
Semi-private zone
DEMARCATION OF SPACES
Since both the businessman and the doctor wanted a professional space within their home, clash between private and public spaces had to be avoided. The form is thus a reflection of this zoning.

Strictly private zone

LOCATION PLAN
The narrow plot and the height restriction of 30 m due to airport regulations were the main constraints of the design process.
Flanked by motor yards on both sides, the site was situated in a relatively quiet spot. Views to the Ammayizhanchan lake and surrounding greenery could be achieved.
