Dear Friends of the juwi Group, Just over a year ago, the world was holding its breath. Across the globe in Japan, the nuclear power plants in Fukushima were collapsing – along with the world’s belief in our infinite capacity to control technology. The shock wave was felt as far as Berlin, where Chancellor Angela Merkel wasted no time in announcing Germany’s third and newest nuclear energy phase-out plan. However, although this plan sounded good, serious actions have yet to be taken. Is the chapter four of this phase-out fiasco just around the corner? Will we soon be faced with an unforeseen renaissance of nuclear power, as many now fear? The most recent decisions surrounding the solar power subsidy have been less than encouraging. The government has needlessly chosen to cripple an industry that was on its way to being able to provide people with the technology required to produce clean energy independently and at an affordable price. Now that solar power is close to being able to compete on the market and building new plants will barely raise the apportionment of the German Renewable Energy Law (EEG) – is it the right time to put a stop to accessible climate protection for everyone? The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) has severely criticized ministers Röttgen and Rösler for their proposals for cuts, and justifiably so, as the institute has shown that the Renewable Energy Law (EEG) is extremely important to energy and environmental politics. Without this subsidy, it would not be possible to achieve Germany’s national goals, as well as goals which have been agreed upon in the EU, for emissions reduction and the use of renewable energies. We too will be forced to respond to the changing conditions in the energy market. We will be working even harder to reduce systems engineering costs and to increase our investment in our own research and technological development. This includes building substructures for photovoltaic systems, cooperating with other organizations in the construction of taller wind turbine towers and designing new models for the direct marketing of heating and power. Our growth in 2012 will be more moderate than it has been over the past four years. In 2011, we reached an annual turnover of over 1 billion euro for the first time and this year, we expect additional growth of 20 to 40 percent – in spite of all the new challenges we are facing on the international energy markets. By the end of 2011, 1,700 juwi group employees from around the world were working to implement the energy revolution. Because ultimately – regardless of the politics involved – people want to live in a clean environment. We are ready and willing to bring the energy revolution to the people.

Solar Rooftop Plant Covers Entire Sports Hall in Italy Perugia, the mediavel capital of Umbria, has one more eyecatcher. The Palasport Evangelisti is located in a small park at the outskirts of the city and is Europe’s first indoor sports hall with a comprehensive solar power plant. Since December 2011, 7,740 thin-film modules are producing around 700,000 kilowatt hours per year and thus cover the building’s complete power supply. The juwi-installed system will be inaugurated with a big street festival during the Perugia Green Days from May 17th to 20 th.

The individual design is made possible through the unique concept of the Advanced Tower Systems (ATS), a joint venture of the juwi group in cooperation with the Dutch company Mecal. An additional advantage: In contrast to conventional towers, the transportation of the individual components of an ATS tower do not require special wide load trucks. A fifth ATS turbine will be erected in Wörrstadt in the coming months. In Rhine-Hesse, plans are already under way for 16 additional ATS turbines with heights of up to 145 meters.

With juwi Invest GmbH, the juwi brand once again has a presence in the capital of the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. In the juwi offices in downtown Mainz, around 15 employees take care of customers and others who are interested in financial investment products. “We made the conscious decision to construct our own team so that we could ensure that both our employees and our service were of the highest quality,” said Willenbacher in regards to the decision for juwi to set up its own service team. With a central location between the main station and the downtown area, juwi Invest is very accessible to both customers and employees. Those who subscribe to “juwi RegioEnergie I Fixed Rate” have their money invested in the renewable energy and ecological products sectors, concentrated within a radius of 100 kilometers around Wörrstadt. How Citizens Can Help Shape the Energy Revolution In addition to the bond securities from juwi Invest GmbH, there are also other ways for the public to contribute to juwi group projects. This is illustrated by the following successful reference projects. Solar and wind energy saving bonds In 2011, soccer fans and non-fans alike could buy a symbolic piece of the solar power system on the roof of Coface Arena in Mainz by purchasing a solar savings bond from the Mainzer Volksbank. The system was planned and installed by the RIO Energie GmbH, a joint subsidiary of the Stadtwerke Mainz AG (public utility company) and the juwi group.
“Our customers not only value the interest rate, but also the opportunity to make a personal contribution to the energy revolution.”
Also in 2011, juwi teamed up with the Sparkasse WormsAlzey-Ried (savings bank) to launch a wind savings bond with an annual interest rate of 3.9 percent and a term of five years. Cooperatives Citizens can join together to achieve more by forming a cooperative. juwi supports this kind of involvement, since it allows the members of the cooperative to pool their resources together and purchase a system. A current example is the “BürgerEnergie Tauberfranken” cooperative. In only a short time, the members collected bond subscriptions

“We Took the Energy Revolution into Our Own Hands” With the Kirchberg wind park planned by juwi, the Rhine-Hunsrück district in the Southwest of Germany has successfully moved from being a power importer to being a power exporter. In this interview, district administrator Bertram Fleck explains this success.
Mr. Fleck, all 23 systems in the Kirchberg wind park have been connected to the grid since February. What does this project mean for the Rhine-Hunsrück district? The wind park shows us that it is a good idea to concentrate new systems at forest locations where there is a lot of wind, if operating them is environmentally justifiable. Financially speaking, we as a district have passed the threshold from power importer to power exporter with the commissioning of the Kirchberg wind park. What led to this success? In my district, numerous citizens, companies, institutions, and local

In many places, wind parks are cleverly incorporated in touristic concepts. What ideas are there for the locations in your district?
“Each construction of a wind turbine leads to orders for local tradesmen.”
I like the concept in the Baedeker travel guide “Germany – Discover Renewable Energies.” The Kirchberg area would also be predestined for an energy tour. The wind park, the administration building for the Rhine-Hunsrück waste disposal, an energy production building, our zero-emission schools, the processing station for cut tree and shrubs, and the related local heat groups of our waste

wind power? We make value creation a subject of discussion. In accordance with our climate protection concept, over the long term we want to convert about 258 million euro of annual energy supply costs to regional value creation, which means jobs for skilled workers, companies and farmers. The solidarity pact model of the collective municipality of Rheinböllen for the balancing of local municipalities with and without wind locations was an example for the entire nation and proved itself to be an “export winner for building acceptance.” What are the specific plans of the district? In December 2011, the district assembly finished the addressed climate protection concept. We would therefore like to continue forward, in a step-by-step process, so that we can master the regional energy revolution by the year 2050. By 2020 the district will reach the goal of being a financially “zero-emission district” in the areas of power, heat, transportation and waste, which will probably be rare in Germany. Precision Work While Transporting Rotor Blades
In mid-February, the employees of a transportation company needed a lot of tact to transport huge rotor blades to the NuĂ&#x;bach wind farm in northern Rhineland-Palatinate. With just a few millimeters of clearance from the building walls in the town of Reiffelbach, the drivers maneuvered the parts, which are 21 meters long and weigh 56 metric tons. Later on, on the way through the small village of Gangloff, it got really narrow. They even had to use a crane to lift the wind turbine components over the houses – from one transport to the other.

juwi’s Presence in Southeast Asia This year, more than half of juwi Solar’s revenue and profit margin will come from its international activities. With the establishment of its newest subsidiary in Singapore, juwi intends to expand and consolidate its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. This is an exciting challenge in an area which is home to over 4.2 billion people and which is made up of many different countries with different needs. But the market in the Asia-Pacific region also offers great opportunities. “In the European and North American markets, renewable energies are faced with cutthroat competition and energy consumption itself has virtually stagnated,” explains Amiram Roth-Deblon, regional manager for the Asia-Pacific region at juwi. “In Asia, on the other hand, there has been a significant increase in demand. Renewables are welcomed as a quick and environmentally friendly way to offset shortages in the power supply. Child Care Center Becomes a Research Laboratory juwi is doubling the capacity of its in-house child care center “juwelchen” to 70 spaces. The topping out ceremony for the expansion took place in December, and the inauguration will take place in early summer. The educational goals of the child care center will be centered on the topics of “experimentation” and “natural sciences,” among others. In an educational workshop constructed specially for this purpose, children will have plenty of room to play and discover a variety of topics, including solar and wind energy. “The educational workshop represents one of the high-quality educational opportunities we offer our kindergarteners,” says Christel Schmidt, head of the child care center. “The kids have access to a wide range of educational materials which they can use to experiment freely or to perform experiments under supervision.” This forward-thinking concept has made “juwelchen” a model for other child care centers in the region.

We can only achieve the energy revolution together with them.” While energy efficient construction is being proDelighted with the acquisition of the new office space in Hachenburg: The Green Buildings managing directors Dr. Dominik Benner (left) and Ralf Ratanski (2nd from right), juwi COO Jochen Magerfleisch (2nd from left), along with Gabriele Greis (First Deputy Mayor) and Mayor Peter Klöckner (right).

“One of the major challenges is to convince banks and operators of the advantages of this kind of marketing because the procedure is new to everyone involved,” explains Alexandra Ernst, managing director of juwi Research & Development GmbH. “In addition, many processes will have to be redesigned in order to make direct marketing possible.” The combined power plant project in Wörrstadt is a model for providing 100 percent of the power supply needs of an industrial site using renewable energies, as well as for developing a private green power grid. This type of power supply system is currently being simulated as an example for the juwi headquarters in Wörrstadt, thereby testing the market model of tomorrow today.
What is direct marketing? With direct marketing, power from renewable energy sources is not purchased from the transmission system operator on the basis of the EEG. Instead, it is directly marketed by the generator to a consumer, such as a private or communal household, industrial operation, or dealer. The market premium, which went into effect in January 2012, is designed to provide an impetus for EEG system operators to market the power from their systems in line with market conditions. This is intended to ensure that operators offer power generated using renewable energies at times when demand is particularly high. premium model is already delivering returns that have exceeded the compensation provided by the EEG.

Against Cutbacks of the Solar Subsidy The energy turnaround is in danger. In late February, employees from the juwi group and other solar companies in the RhinelandPalatinate region took part in a demonstration at the Wörrstadt solar park to make clear that the planned drastic reduction in the solar power subsidy not only endangers tens of thousands of jobs, it would also mean the end of the energy revolution. Close to 1,000 employees braved inclement weather and criticized the government’s plans by carrying posters with the slogan: “No solar power today – will we return to atomic power tomorrow?”
