WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY LEUNG QIAN WEN (4E1) 2015 Juying Primary (2011)
I have grown to become more mature in terms of my thinking and actions. I used to give up very easily in whatever I did since I lacked the motivation to do my best; in contrast, I now love to take on challenges that come my way, and do my best to find solutions to the problems. This, in turn, motivates me to continue taking on even more challenging tasks as years pass. My teachers are always there to encourage me. One of my favourite teachers is Mrs Lee Wen Lin. She is not just my Chemistry teacher, but also my Sky Camp commandant when I was in the lower secondary. She taught me that every action that we choose has a consequence to it. So nowadays I will think twice before doing something. Mrs Lee will always be patient enough to hear me out and she really inspires me with her words and actions. I enjoy being in the English Language Drama & Debating Society. My CCA is a platform for me to express my feelings, build my confidence and also put my ideas into action. Our CCA members have forged strong bonds with one another. I am a more confident person who is able to speak in front of a crowd. In addition, my most memorable experience in Juying Secondary was to be able to participate in the Secondary Three VIA trip where we spent 4 days and 3 nights in Shantou, China. I was also able to make many new friends in China and learn more about their culture. I also had the chance to share the way we played Captains’ Ball and taught the students English too. Overall, it was an amazing and inspiring experience for me to be able to be a blessing to others.

Learning for Life Programme
I have really benefitted much from the music and dance programmes (Learning for Life Programme) that my school offers. I get to choose to play either the Guzheng or Ukulele for music as well as learn the jazz dance and hiphop. Thanks to dance, our class has become much closer than it was before. My class had so much fun when we went around dancing with different partners. I think I have overcome my shyness through dance. Thanks to my Ukulele lessons, I also have conquered my stage fright to perform in front of a crowd. We were required to showcase our skills in playing the ukulele as well as singing right in front of the entire class. Imagine 40 pairs of eyes staring at you! I was scared at first and made a lot of mistakes, but with the support and motivation of my classmates, I am now able to sing confidently or play the Ukulele with poise in front of a crowd. These were all definitely new experiences for me and I am thankful that I am given the chance to pick up such wonderful skills. My teachers and instructors were very patient and understanding too. I am most happy to be a student of Juying Secondary School.
OUR VALUES
We inculcate in every JYian our school’s R3IGHT values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork. We envision all our JYians to be leaders who possess not only the necessary leadership competencies, but also strength of character. Our students are given many opportunities to learn about leadership, and to serve others. Our values-driven Character & Citizenship Education (CCE) curriculum includes Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, R3IGHT level camps, Outdoor Education activities, local and overseas Values-In-Action activities and student-led school events.
JUYING R3IGHT VALUES
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Stephen Covey The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is a book published by Sean Covey in 1998, based on the principles described in Stephen Covey’s 1989 international bestseller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Many concepts that are now accepted wisdom, such as beginning with the end in mind, having an abundance mindset, or using the urgent-important matrix, originated from the 7 Habits principles. Juying Sec integrates the 7 Habits principles with MOE’s Character & Citizenship Education curriculum, as part of our school’s Character Excellence strategic thrust. Through this signature programme, we help our students to master personal and inter-personal effectiveness strategies in order to be able to achieve their goals, nurture healthy and meaningful relationships, and also renew themselves and continue learning and improving.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
VALUES-IN-ACTION/ TRIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE Our approach to VIA/TIE is to increase the level of student ownership and involvement in the VIA/TIE process, so as to better achieve the objectives of the VIA/TIE project: 1. Develop in our students the 21st Century Competencies of global awareness and cross-cultural skills and sensitivities; 2. Expose students to Asia, especially South East Asia, and sensitise them to Singapore’s place in the world; and 3. Deepen students’ commitment and rootedness to Singapore. To plan for the trip, our Sec 3 students went through the following steps: Stage 1 Identified a social issue that they wanted to learn more about. Stage 2 Conducted research on how that issue is being tackled in Singapore. Selected a destination that has done well in tackling that issue to visit and learn from. Stage 3 Crafted their desired learning outcomes from their VIA/TIE trip. Stage 4 Worked with their form teachers to plan the learning itinerary and select the trip vendor. Following their VIA/TIE project, the Sec 3 classes all shared with the school what they had experienced and learnt during their trip. Feedback from the students, the teachers, and even the staff of the places visited by the students during their VIA/TIE project, was very positive. Students shared that they had benefited from the programme tremendously. As a follow-up to the VIA/TIE project, and to give the students an opportunity to further develop themselves and apply what they have learnt, the Sec 3 classes will plan their own VIA activity in the following year to tackle the social issue they had chosen, but in Singapore’s context. Through this programme, our students have definitely grown in their selfconfidence and self-directedness, as well as developed into more concerned global citizens and active contributors to tackle social issues around them.
OUR TEACHERS Our teachers are caring, competent and empowered educators who believe in giving their best to every student who comes to us. We seek to understand all JYians’ needs, build quality relationships with students and parents, and work towards helping all JYians to achieve their aspirations. We strive to produce gracious JYians who are respectful, responsible, and resilient, ready to serve the community with integrity and humility. Our teachers are life-long learners who role model the R3IGHT values. Our Juying teachers seek to develop themselves professionally through our Professional Learning Community, share good practices at workshops and conferences, and pursue post-graduate studies to better cater to our students’ holistic development.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY FOO YONG HUI (4E1) 2015 Fuhua Primary (2011)
During my four years in Juying Secondary, I experienced many challenging times, but I managed to grow as a person, and learnt many valuable lessons in the process. Rather than try to avoid or complain about the tough times faced, I discovered that being resilient and facing the tough times is critical. Juying Secondary is blessed with numerous passionate and caring teachers such as Mrs Katherine Leong, my form teacher (from Secondary One to Secondary Two). She taught me the importance of friendship. In fact, Mrs Leong is considered a friend who has helped me settle into school life. Mr Soh Joon Wei, my Form Teacher (Secondary Three and Secondary Four), is another teacher who helped me to grow and mature. Then, there is also Mrs Lee Wen Lin, who never gives up on her students – it was she who helped me to persevere in my studies especially in the final year. I am also thankful to my Chinese teacher, Ms Li Jing, for being there and helping me when I was in need. My Chemistry teacher, Mr Yeo Yong Kiat, has definitely impacted me the most. Despite his extremely busy schedule, he still managed to find time for additional consultation during the examination period. His hard work and passion motivated me to study harder. In doing so, I became more confident about doing well in Chemistry. Finally, what I enjoy and like most about Juying would be the close relationships between students and teachers. The bonds that I have developed over the years with them are priceless, and these bonds will remain even after I graduate.
OUR PARTNERS Our Juying parents are supportive and committed partners who work closely with the school for the best interest of all JYians. We strongly believe in creating excellent partnerships with parents and other stakeholders to enhance and amplify the individual talents of our students, and develop them to their fullest potential. The Juying Parents’ Support Group (JPSG) networks with fellow parents and contributes actively to the well-being of JYians. They are instrumental in supporting the work of our Juying teachers. Some of the JPSG’s activities include regular parenting talks, organising outings and potluck sessions for fellow Juying parents.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MR CHUA BENG HWA
Parent of Chua Brandon Juying Sec 3E2 (2016) West Grove Primary (2013) Like all parents, selecting a secondary school was a tough decision for me and my wife as we wanted our son to get into a good school within the neighbourhood. What we mean by a "good" school is one that would enable our son not only to excel in his studies, but also inculcate good values in him. We felt that character development was more critical than academic excellence. Being a grassroots leader in the Nanyang Community Club for 16 years, I had the advantage of getting more information from some of the other grassroots chairpersons in various zones and members who had organised events with various neighbourhood schools. I was told repeatedly that Juying Secondary has been actively participating and volunteering in most major community events. Personally I had the chance to witness the dedication of the students and staff while supervising the National Day flag placard formation. Despite the rain and arduous task of lifting the placards repeatedly to form the crescent moon and stars for long hours, the principal himself was there to assist in the process and I could see his enthusiasm, as well as the staff encouraging the students and checking on their welfare. This made me sure that JYSS is the school that I want my son to be in. It shows that the school has a heart for community, and is one that instills discipline. I have also seen the tremendous improvement in my son Brandon, who used to
have low self-esteem because of health issues like obesity and asthma. Today, I am proud to say that he has become a self-inspired basketball player. He is tall, fit and trim now. Moreover, I notice he has developed a kind heart for others and his friends. Academically, he has improved in all his subjects. The school has definitely brought out the good in him. The most impressive thing about JYSS is the leadership of the principal, Mr Seet, who leads with commitment and integrity. I see him everywhere – he is always at all the events, community work events, sports, talks, and so on. Even his staff talk about his dedication. Mr Seet also does not compromise on safety for his students and staff, and he keeps parents informed through a WhatsApp chat group. In the past 2 years he has used this platform to raise concerns on safety issues and to keep parents updated about the happenings in school. As parents, we want the best for our children. We want them to do well in their studies, be of good character, show respect towards their parents and others, and study in a clean and safe school. Yet, we cannot rely solely on the school teachers to do it. Parenthood is an arduous task but it can be lightened if the school you select works closely with you and provides tools such as parenting workshops to help you in the process. I am glad that Juying Secondary School strongly supports parents! Therefore, I am happy to have chosen this school and I would like to thank JYSS for enabling me to nurture my 3 children.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MDM CHRISTINA SIM
Parent of Ernice Soo Juying Sec 2A2 (2016) Fuhua Primary (2014) It is never an easy task when it comes to selecting a secondary school for your child. A year ago, Ernice made Juying Secondary School her choice and I supported it fully with no regrets. After her PSLE, Ernice always brought home with her piles of brochures and tokens from different secondary schools that gave talks at her primary school. Naturally, our daily conversation revolved around choosing the right secondary school. One day, she came home showing me a brochure and said, “Mummy, all my friends don’t want to go to this school because the principal is so fierce! But they have the best hip hop dance group!” That was the day I was introduced to Juying Secondary School. I went to find out more about this school. Ernice was attracted to the school hip hop team while I was drawn to the school’s core values. We decided to go to their Open House. We were received with a warm welcome. Students were well-mannered, and the staff and members of the Juying Parents’ Support Group were friendly. They were like a big family. We were impressed at the end of the school tour and decided to make Juying Secondary School our first choice. Education is about learning and cultivating values; academic achievement is the by-product of character building. This has always been my belief. Within ten months of her first year here, I have seen changes in her. Her studies improved and she is even more responsible, gracious and thoughtful as compared to before. Juying Secondary School has the ability to impart knowledge and
inculcate values in their students. That’s impressive! Having your voice heard gives you a sense of belonging, both for students and parents. The school culture is such that both students and parents are given opportunities to give feedback or to share ideas. Take for example, the mobile phone rules in school – I learnt that the students themselves came up with rules governing the use of mobile phones. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. The environment contributes for better or worse to a child’s well-being. JYSS makes great effort in building relationships with the community and parents. We have opportunities to serve the community as parents are always in the loop of what is happening and even to be part of the activities. There are workshops organised for both parents and children. Bonds are developed and values are inculcated. The school was featured in the 13 January 2015, Straits Times article “O-level results: Tough struggle of work and study ends well for teen”. It is not the first time that JYSS is in the news. This is an affirmation of the JYSS educators’ work as they care for students from their hearts. There is a unique culture here. During the ‘O’ level examinations, parents make effort and time to prepare sandwiches for students who are taking the examinations. Don’t you find this heart-warming? To parents who are cracking their heads now over choices of schools, ask yourself what you desire for your child. Do the school vision and mission align with your beliefs? Is the school environment conducive for learning? Although attaining good academic qualifications is important, it is not the only thing about education. We made JYSS our choice, and we hope it’s yours too.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MDM MAY MONG
Parent of Joleen Goh Jia Ying Juying Sec 2E1 (2016) West Grove Primary (2014)
I have chosen JYSS as my daughter's school for several reasons. It started off with my daughter coming back home one day (before the release of PSLE results) saying she wanted to put JYSS as her first choice school as she was impressed by a presentation given by the principal, Mr Seet, at her primary school. I was curious as to what had led her to deciding on this as she had not been absolutely sure which secondary school she intended to go to. Upon some research, I noted that under the current principal, the school has good track records in terms of academic achievements and strong beliefs about inculcating values and good habits in students. I also notice that the school environment is conducive for learning and that it has a range of facilities and CCAs. In addition, I have heard about how the teachers are so committed towards helping weaker students. Thus, I feel I can leave my daughter in JYSS’ good hands to help her excel in her secondary school years. I had a good impression of JYSS before my daughter joined JYSS (reasons as mentioned above) and thought that this was a good neighbourhood school. Now 10 months later at the end of her Secondary 1 year, I think JYSS has exceeded my expectations. There are quite a number of things that I like. 1. Parents can contact the school leaders directly. There is a sense of personal
touch. Communications take the form of updates from the school to greetings during the festive period via WhatsApp. 2. Through the Juying Parents Support Group (JPSG), parents have networking opportunities, and are able to share ideas and parenting experiences. JPSG activities encourage parent-child involvement and family bonding. In fact the most recent activity was the Teacher's Day gift making project which I participated in. Apart from that, parents were invited to join their JYian Mass Dance and through this we got to learn more about the school culture. 3. There were engaging workshops available for parents to sign up. 4. There are also different types of learning experiences given to students for example, the visit to the Japanese Garden for Geography lessons, and outdoor activities like kayaking. 5. Teachers are very committed to their students. 6. The school instils strict discipline. I would encourage parents to review carefully the secondary school and ultimately to work in close partnership with it through their children’s secondary school years.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MRS CANDY TEO
Parent of Zhang ZhiQi, Mezzo Juying Sec 4E1 (2015) West Grove Primary (2011)
We have confidence in the school leaders. I believe that a school should provide a holistic education for the students, focusing on both academic and character building aspects. To my delight, JYSS has far exceeded my expectations in nurturing my child holistically. JYSS has provided invaluable learning experiences for the students - VIA programmes, leadership training, exchange programmes with other schools, and many more. The undying passion and commitment from all the teachers who tirelessly provide a positive learning environment for the students. They instil the right values in our children and motivate them to excel in all areas. Look no further, Juying is the right choice!
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MRS WENDY NEO Parent of Neo Say Ping Juying Sec 2E3 (2016) Corporation Primary (2014) Neo See Chyi Juying Sec 4E1 (2016) Corporation Primary (2012)
We did not know much about JYSS but only that a new principal from a reputable school would be posted there. On the day of her Secondary 1 registration, my daughter asked, "Can you transfer me to another school if my grades improve?" We told her that we would. After meeting and talking to the principal, Mr Seet, we were convinced by his answers to parents’ concerns and questions about his experiences and confidence in leading JYSS. After one year, we asked our daughter whether she wanted to transfer to another school, but her answer was no. We believe we have made the right choice as we believe in the leadership of the school's leaders and mentors. We are glad that our girl is happy in JYSS and that has motivated her to progress further. For these reasons, we also enrolled our son into JYSS in 2015. We hope that through proper guidance and motivation, he will progress as well as we believe by working together with the school, we can succeed. We like JYSS as it has quality leaders, as well as capable and responsible teachers and staff.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MDM DIONNE TAN
Parent of Jaydon Ng Juying Sec 1A1 (2016) Rulang Pri (2015)
From that moment when I needed to discuss with my son his 6 choices of secondary school last year, I was totally lost. I was introduced to Juying Secondary School by one of the parents from his primary school. I didn't even know where the school was located and had to use Google map to find it. It was really far and I was also skeptical to put it as first choice as my boy has motion sickness. Nevertheless, we still gave it a shot!! Definitely, we have no regrets about putting Juying Sec as our 1st choice. Mr Seet, the Principal, is a true educator. His dedication and passion towards education are undisputed and at the same time he puts a strong emphasis on discipline and character building of every student. Together with the VPs, the teachers here in Juying not only drive the students to achieve academic excellence but are also devoted to motivating the students to maximize their fullest potential. I can see that my son is becoming more independent and mature as he is one of the student leaders. I believe Juying will be able to groom all students into young adults with good values, if we parents are also proactive and supportive, working hand-in-hand with the school.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MR SHAWN WONG Parent of Wong Zhao Han Seth Juying Sec 2E2 (2016) Rulang Pri (2014)
Seth, during his primary school days, performed well throughout his time in Rulang Primary School. Although academically fine, he lacked confidence and social skills which I personally feel are essential especially when he steps into the working society. We went to the Juying Open House as a family and noticed the following: 1. Juying students are confident and speak well. 2. Teachers are ‘in it’ together, sharing the same goals that they hope to achieve within the school. 3. There is a very strong stakeholder feel from the senior students and also the teaching staff. 4. The wide range of programmes that were introduced by Mr Seet during the school introduction. 5. A school that is focused on both the academic excellence and also on character building. An individual with only intelligence but without character and soft skills can only go so far. We were looking for a school which could nurture my son in a holistic way to prepare him for the future and from what I have seen so far, it was definitely the right decision for my son to be in Juying.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MR DICKSON KANG Parent of Kang Tian Qi Juying Sec 4A2 (2016) West Grove Pri (2012)
Juying is a school which prides itself on teaching students not only the concepts in textbooks, but also values and morals that students can apply in their lives. I believe in this approach to education for my child. I used to have the misconception that neighbourhood schools are not on par with the more established institutions in terms of education. However, once my child entered JYSS, I realized that the education she received was tailored to her needs and with the moral support that she has been given, she is able to perform well. Even though she was in the Normal (Academic) stream, she was given the same opportunity to take ‘O’ level Mathematics as she is strong in the subject. I always appreciate how friendly the staff members are and how some of the school activities are unique, which you would not find in other schools. The most important thing is the 2-way communication between parents and the principal. I would advise parents to ask their child what he or she really wants in a school and not to worry about getting into ‘famous’ schools, but into schools that are near their homes as there is no such thing as a bad school.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MR RAY LEE Parent of Lee Kang Cherng Ryan Juying Sec 1A1 (2016) Rulang Pri (2015)
Ryan chose Juying as his first choice because of what he heard about and saw at Juying. He believed that it would be a good place for him to continue growing. After seeing him work with his teachers and principals for the past few months, I think our initial assessment is right. The school endeavours to help each student build both his academic abilities and character. If a student is motivated to grow, no matter what level of mastery he might be in, there are many teachers in Juying who will walk those extra miles with him. It takes a village to raise a child, and I am thankful for the personal touch shown by the committed teachers and principals amidst their very heavy schedules.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MDM PATRICIA TEO Parent of Pernette Soh Si Xuan, Juying Sec 3A1 (2016) Pioneer Primary School (2013) I have no regrets in sending my child to JYSS as there is a dedicated team of teachers. Under Ms Khoo Woei Lin’s patient and enthusiastic teaching, she is now able to score between 70% to 80%. From my daughter, I learnt that Ms Khoo is a source of inspiration and one of the reasons why she looks forward to her lessons daily. It is important to have a responsible and caring teacher during our children’s secondary school years as they have a huge impact on students. I believe that it is important to have a team of good and dedicated teachers, and I have found them in JYSS. We can readily contact our teachers via WhatsApp or a phone call to discuss our children’s progress. All in all, I would say that JYSS may be a neighbourhood school, but the team of educators certainly do not lack kindness and enthusiasm to teach the children. Simply, JYSS is a good choice. It is our choice.
WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY MDM ASLINDA ELLIAS Parent of Benjamin Bin Achmad Safarudin Juying Sec 3A2 (2016) Pioneer Primary (2013) Emillia Bte Achmad Safarudin Juying Sec 2A1 (2016) Pioneer Primary (2014) Parents are often torn between a more competitive and less competitive school. Like all parents, I want the best for my son and daughter. My focus was on getting my son into a school that would boost his confidence in his academic ability, and to guide him towards having high aspirations. I would like to thank Mr Seet and his team of teachers for making this happen. Apart from the academic results, more importantly, I see my son slowly growing and learning to be a more mature and caring youth with strong JYian values. I am very grateful and appreciative of the holistic and well integrated education which JYSS provides and especially to the teachers for living out the JYSS OYSTER philosophy. In JYSS, the teachers are not only dedicated professionals but they have their way of engaging students and helping them to reflect on their behaviour. There are opportunities for parents to share their knowledge and concerns through the JPSG (Juying Parent Support Group). Parents can improve their parenting skills through workshops that are conducted regularly. Lastly, the best thing that JYSS offers is the eligibility for the scholarship award, which my second child was awarded when she decided to choose JYSS as her first choice last year.

Daro Tan Head Student Council Jurong Junior College 2016 Head Prefect Juying Secondary (4E1) 2015
Before I started my school life at Juying Secondary, I could be described as a happy-go-lucky person. I would spend each day with little motivation, waiting for every other day to go by aimlessly. However, upon starting secondary school life at Juying, things started to change for me. I began interacting with my seniors and peers, and gradually began to learn that there is more to life than just preventing myself from being bored on a daily basis. Over time, I started to find new meaning in life, and that there was much to be done to make a positive impact on others. My parents shared that “Time is Gold; every minute, every second is to be treasured and spent wisely. I became more motivated to study harder, and also to make important decisions that would ultimately affect my future in a positive way. As Head Prefect, I was in turn able to positively impact my peers and juniors. Teachers like Mr Chen, Mr Mustafa and Ms Sonia are some of the teachers who have taught me invaluable lessons beyond the textbook. When I was in distress or feeling discouraged, their doors were always open for me. Mr Chen, in particular, would never fail to lend me a listening ear. He would listen to my
problems patiently and point out to me that making mistakes is a normal part of life: “To err is human”, he would say. I learnt that we should learn from our mistakes, so that we can improve our future. My prefectorial board teachers Mr Surya, Mr Chuah, and Ms Huang also impacted my life significantly. From them, I learnt that being a prefect is not an easy task; however, having the courage and perseverance to press on, and to assist others in need, is what makes a true leader. I love the holistic environment provided in Juying Secondary. The school provides students with equal opportunities to showcase their talents in multiple ways – through CCAs, academia or leadership programmes. A memorable moment for me was last year, when my class and I visited other countries to carry out our Values-In-Action programme. Through the process, I was able to apply the values that I had learnt at Juying Secondary, such as teamwork, humility and hard work. The overseas trip also enriched my appreciation of other cultures, and widened my horizons. The core Juying values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork have helped me to grow in my secondary school life. They have allowed me not just to improve myself, but also to make positive contributions to the lives of other JYians.

Patrick Ang Deputy President Student Council ITE College West 2016 Juying Secondary (4T1) 2015
I was a defiant and disobedient pupil in primary school right up to Secondary 2. As I became more mature in Juying, I was determined to become a better person. However, without the help of people who believed in me, I would not be where I am today. I am now a positive-minded person, without having my parents to worry about me. I am independent and that's because I've been taught well by my teachers. The teachers in Juying believe that every student can excel. Even though I disliked studying, they believed in me, encouraged me, trusted me, supported me and counselled me. They taught me the R3IGHT values, and this in turn gave me many opportunities to serve as a positive role model for other students. When I was in lower secondary, I really hated school. That was until I started to put in extra effort towards my studies. It did not go smoothly initially, but I persevered. Along the way, I faced many ups and downs but I was determined not to let the bad times discourage me. The teachers in Juying Secondary are helpful, thoughtful and they will put in extra effort to stay back with us after school as long as we need help. For
example, there is Mr Surya, who has helped me to improve tremendously in Mathematics, from a U grade (Ungraded) to an A grade! He helped me by giving me extra lessons almost every day after school, even on Saturdays despite his injured lower back. I am really thankful to have him as my Mathematics teacher. Mr Surya even once encouraged me by writing a simple note and mailing it to my house; he also treated my friends and me to Pizza Hut after we scored As for our Secondary 4 Mid-Year Examinations. He made Mathematics lessons interesting, and included a variety of real-life situations and linked them to Mathematics. This helped us enjoy the subject and improve in it by leaps and bounds. Another teacher, Mr Chuah Soon Ann, believed in me even though I did not think that I was reliable. He entrusted me with the Secondary One Orientation Camp and gave me the opportunity to become a student leader. He gave me the chance to lead even though I was not very confident about my leadership abilities at that time. I am so thankful to have him as my PE Teacher. He encouraged me whenever I was facing problems in school, and often helped me with school problems. His encouragement had made me a better person, for his words are sincere and deep. Whenever he gave me advice, it jogged my thinking and stayed in my memory. He is someone whom I respect greatly. Lastly, I want to thank my Vice Principal, Mr Ow, who inspires me to become someone better. He always sets his expectations higher so that the students do not get complacent with their results, which in turn can result in a downfall. He has given me opportunities to grow. Lastly, he encouraged me to do better in my studies -- even after I scored very well in my examination. Mr Ow continuously supported me whenever I felt like giving up. In short, I am grateful to my school and my teachers for helping me to become who I am today. I will always remember all that I have learnt and to inspire others just as I have been inspired by my wonderful teachers here.

Firstly let me share the most memorable experience in Juying, which is the Singapore-Hong Kong Exchange Programme. I was very fortunate to be selected for the programme where I was paired with Yanice, my Hong Kong buddy. In three short weeks, Yanice and I built up a strong bond. This programme has enabled me to grow as a person and I learnt to appreciate diverse cultures and people. Secondly, Juying has many awesome teachers but my favourite teacher is Ms Huang, my Science teacher. Ms Huang is able to ensure a conducive learning environment for the class. She always ensures that everyone understands the concept before moving on. Ms Huang also gives private consultations for weaker students to help them in answering difficult questions. You will meet more helpful teachers like Ms Huang if you come to Juying. The wonderful teachers in Juying also help to run a wide range of CCAs. I am in Cultural Dance. I am proud to tell you that in Cultural Dance, everyone will be there for you and help you in any way they can. This CCA not only teaches us how to dance but also teaches us moral values so that we can strive in life with a strong moral compass. Last but not least, I chose Juying as my first choice as this school gave me the best impression. There were student ushers who took us around the school for a tour and answered all our questions. I was awarded a scholarship when I chose Juying as my first choice. With this scholarship, I was able to buy new books to start the school year.

If I could choose my secondary school all over again, I would still choose Juying Secondary School because of the caring teachers here. One of my favourite teachers is Ms Lau Jia Yun, my Chinese Language teacher. One thing she does to make the lessons more interesting is to use short video clips of cartoons to explain the meanings behind Chinese words and phrases. She is very patient in explaining things to us so that we can understand better. This gives us the motivation and confidence to do well in our examinations. Besides being my Chinese Language teacher, Ms Lau is also my Form Teacher. She sets aside time to interact with me and my classmates, and her sense of humour always makes the Form Teacher period fun and entertaining. She often goes out of her way to help us with any problems that we are facing. For example, she counselled me when I was having problems juggling my studies and student leader responsibilities. Thus, Ms Lau is like a “mother to me, and I am really grateful for all the guidance that she has given me throughout this year. We also have interesting programmes to ignite our love for our mother tongues in school. For example, one of my most memorable activities was the fan drawing and poem writing activity during the Mother Tongue Fortnight. My other personal favourite experiences include Calligraphy and learning to play Guzheng, a Chinese classical music instrument, as part of our Learning-for-Life Programme.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY MOHAMMAD SYAFI (2A1) Jurong West Primary (2014)
I have only been in Juying for one year but so many interesting and wonderful events have happened. The most memorable one for me was the Speech Day which was held to celebrate Juying’s 20th year since its opening in 1995. We had many entertaining performances for a huge audience. Although I was only in Secondary 1, I was given the opportunity to be the emcee for the event and had a lot of fun. It helped me build up my confidence in public speaking. Of course I could not have done all this without my teacher, Madam Rozana. She has helped me since the start of school and my results have improved because of her patience and encouragement. She believes in me and she has been pushing me to achieve my potential. Thanks to Madam Rozana, I have been doing well and will continue to do better in my studies and CCA. The CCA which I am currently in is the National Cadet Corps or NCC in short. It is a fun CCA with many new things being taught every training session. The NCC helps one to build physical strength and also one’s confidence so that we can help one another. We live by a code “Don’t Leave A Man Behind” and we stick to it. The NCC is not just about marching under the hot sun all day long. We have plenty of activities after training to have fun and build friendships with our fellow cadets. I chose Juying as my first choice because of the talk given by Mr Seet. I feel that Juying is a good school. By choosing Juying as my first choice, I was awarded a scholarship, which is one of the achievements that I am proud of.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY JONATHON LAU JUN XIAN (1E1) Shuqun Primary (2015)
Applied Learning Programme
Our school has planned many programmes that give students an enjoyable and enriching time of learning new skills to help us become more confident in speaking to a crowd. An example is the Storytelling Workshop which took place after our Mid-Year Examinations in May this year. The workshop helped us have a better understanding of what storytelling is. We also learnt creative ways such as including background sounds and actions to engage the audience and make the story more interesting and exciting. It helped me gain confidence as I had to speak and perform in front of my class. Secondly, my classmates and I took part in Stand and Deliver. This takes place during recess times when students are given a chance to deliver a speech on a topic that they are passionate about. I feel that it is a good way to practise how to address a crowd fluently and confidently, which is a good skill that we will need in the future. In addition, Stand and Deliver sessions are also useful for the audience as they can learn something about the subject that the speaker is talking about while enjoying their meals. In conclusion, I feel that both these programmes are relevant and useful because they have helped us students gain knowledge and build our skills in speaking effectively. Ultimately, I believe that this will help us become more prepared for the future when we have to deliver presentations or speak in front of a crowd. Thus, I am thankful for the opportunity to pick up new skills through the Applied Learning Programme.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY WONG SIN SET (3E1) Boon Lay Garden Primary (2013)
These two years at Juying have been nothing short of amazing for me. The most memorable experience was the Leadership Experience and Discovery camp held at Pulau Ubin. This camp is for student leaders to hone their leadership skills. We got the chance to explore Pulau Ubin and completed many missions which bonded our team closer. My favourite teacher in Juying is Mr Dayan. He has been both my English and Geography teacher for two years. He always makes his lessons interesting with many activities and also group work. Ever since he started teaching me, I began to appreciate the beauty of the English language and my English results have since improved tremendously. He will also regularly gather feedback from us so that he can improve too. What I love most about Juying is that many of the teachers are so awesome that I had a tough time choosing my favourite teacher. The teachers in Juying also help to run a wide range of CCAs. I am in the Choir. Our choir is a Show Choir, which involves not only singing, but dancing as well. I have many helpful seniors in Choir who always help me to get my dance steps and notes right. Our instructors and teachers are friendly and easy to get along. Moreover, all of us are given the opportunity to sing solo in different songs. I chose Juying as my first choice as I was really touched by how much sincerity our school Principal, Mr Seet, has. He went to the various primary schools himself to conduct Primary 6 Talks when he could have just sent a teacher. I was awarded a scholarship when I chose Juying as my first choice. For these reasons, I am proud to have made Juying my choice school.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY KHO WEI NING (2E3) Lakeside Primary (2014)
The most memorable experience over last year in Juying was the Secondary 1 Orientation Camp. There were many activities held so that we could get to know our classmates better. One interesting game was the Night Flag Hunting game. In the middle of the game, we realised that we had lost one classmate in the dark! But luckily we soon found him with the other half of our class. It was a very exciting game and we really enjoyed playing with our classmates. These activities have been made possible by the teachers of Juying. My favourite teacher is Madam Khairiani. She is the kindest and most cheerful teacher I have ever met. There was one time when I felt unwell in her class. Throughout the day, she kept checking on how I was. I could see that she was really worried for me and I was very touched by her concern. You will meet many kind and cheerful teachers like Madam Khairiani if you come to Juying. There is a wide range of CCAs in Juying. I am in the Juying Show Choir. Our Show Choir won the Platinum Award during last year’s B-Dazzled Show Choir Festival. After one year with the Show Choir, I have learnt to try my best in everything, even though it may be out of my comfort zone. I have also become a more resilient person thanks to the many practice sessions we have. Why did I choose Juying as my first choice? I went to the Open House after I received my results and was impressed with the excellent facilities. The teachers and students here are also very courteous and friendly. You will feel very welcome and part of a big family if you come to my school.
