Immigration Tips & Reminders Social Security You must have the following to get a recommendation from Global Affairs for a Social Security Number: Two weeks must pass from your arrival in the U.S. You must be enrolled in a full load of classes and get a letter of job offer from an on-campus employer.
11
Imm s&R igratio n em ind ers While studying in America, we strongly advise you to file taxes. Regardless of your income situation, you should report your income or lack of income to the IRS. Tax season takes place annually during the first four months of the year. UCO’s College of Business offers a free tax service each tax season. You are also welcome to consult with your own tax advisor that will usually charge a fee.
Tax Filing
Tip
Maintaining F-1/J-1 Status You cannot attend UCO if you are out of status. To maintain your status you should enroll full time each semester (12 hours for undergraduate, 9 hours for graduate students), maintain a valid passport, notify Global Affairs if you transfer to another school or change level or program, apply for an extension of stay before your I-20/DS-2019 expires, you must not work off-campus without authorization, you must attend classes regularly, and notify the Int’l Office of any change of address within 10 days of that change. *Loss of status is not limited to these items. However, these are the most common.*
Off Campus Employment Optional Practical training (OPT ) — OPT allows students to gain practical experience working in their field of study. OPT allows students to work for one year full-time after graduation. This is called Post-Completion OPT. The application must be submitted during your final semester or in the month just after. OPT can also be taken part-time before you graduate, however this time is subracted from the time you are allowed after graduation at half rate.
Severe Economic Hardship Employment authorization can be granted on the basis of unexpected economic hardship. Students can apply only upon completion of one academic year and they must prove to immigration that they and/or their sponsor have experienced unforeseen and severe financial hardship. Applicaton packets are availabe in the OGA, Applicaton fee is $380.
13
Imm s&R igratio n em ind ers For juniors, seniors and graduate students who wish to do an internship in their field of study. For this type of employment authorizaton the student enrolls in an internship or practicum class, and provides a letter from the employer as well as approval from the academic department. These are then presented to the Global Affairs Office Immigraton Advisor. There is no application fee, only the cost of tuiton for the class.
Curricular Practical training
Tip
Unauthorized off campus employment is illegal and could result in arrest and deportation. Questions? Come to OGA.

Serving YOU from more than 110 countries
Welcome from the
Vice President Dear Broncho, Welcome to the University of Central Oklahoma! We are delighted to have you join UCO’s family away from home. You have travelled from near and far to be with us and we hope this would open up many more new experiences for you here. I encourage you to explore and experience all that the University, the City of Edmond, and the State of Oklahoma have to offer. You will encounter a quality education inside of the classroom – but there is another world to encounter outside of the classroom walls, that includes special events, athletic competitions, concerts and trips in- and out-of-state. On campus, we have many traditional activities, starting next week with “Stampede Week” which offers varieties of opportunities for you to make new connection and learn more about UCO and what it has to offer . Additionally, the Division of Student Affairs entails many different departments which you can find in this Survival Guide that would help enhance your experience here at UCO, and I encourage you to get to know each one of them and see what they have to offer to support you. I want you to know that you are personally supported throughout your time at UCO. If you ever have a question, an idea, or a concern – please come visit with me. We want you to have everything you need for your success while you are here. Congratulations on selecting a superb university for the pursuit of your degree. Remember to seize every opportunity to experience the culture and friendships UCO has to offer. And know that you have a friend in the Vice President’s office. Hello new friends, You’re going to have a great time here. One thing you’ll see right away is how friendly everyone on campus is. The campus and the Edmond community realize how much you bring us. You bring us your culture, your insights, and your perspectives and we appreciate it. As for me, I’ve been working in the international education field more than 30 years. I’ve traveled to more than 60 countries and worn out that many suitcases, I guess. My wife, Jan and I have several kids, all grown, and a growing number of grandkids. Like every American family we have a dog and a cat. (I didn’t want a cat and my wife didn’t want a dog. So of course the dog follows Jan everywhere, and the cat thinks I’m her pet—go figure.) My advice—stay open. Someone once said that education is learning what you didn’t know that you didn’t know. As long as you know that, you know something.
Timothy Kok Position: Director of International Admissions and Communications Tel: 405-974-2370 Email: jkok@uco.edu Skype: tim2370 I love to meet people, hence, I chose international education by helping UCO to connect with students, parents, institutions and organizations all over the world. As the Director of International Admissions and Communications at UCO, I help provide services to prospective and new students ranging from admissions, articulation of credits, scholarships, orientation and settling to their new life in Oklahoma. Additionally, I assist UCO in establishing contacts with partner universities and organizations in different nations. I enjoy outdoor activities, have strong passion in cooking and eating, swimming, playing and singing Christian music with my guitar and traveling. My advise for students is always to get involved on campus and be proactive in taking part in various volunteering and leadership opportunities. The time is very short as students transition into the working world.

I have worked in the Office of Global Affairs for over ten years. So that makes me an expert on how well I know that your advisors take good care of you from the time that you arrived here from the airport to the last day that you leave as you graduate and go on to the next chapter in your academic life. So whether it’s an admission question, immigration concern, a shoulder to cry on, advice needed, your USA/UCO mom or dad, various activities on and around campus, a friend and/or pal, this is the place where you can come and find an answer to your inquiries. If they don’t know the answer needed, then they go beyond the call of duty to help you find the answer or the campus department that can help you with your next challenge. Your advisors take care of you; my job is to take care of your advisor. If I can be sure that they are happy here at UCO Office of Global Affairs, then they will take better care of you. This office is known for the care and expertise that is provided worldwide. So don’t hesitate to come by the office when you need something, want to say ‘Hi,’ bring your parents in to meet us, feel free; our doors are always open to you.

I have 33 years of experience in public education from teacher to high school principal. Do not tell me you cannot learn! Or it is too hard! Everything we have learned was hard at the beginning, the more we practice our skills, the easier it becomes. This is college – you are responsible for yourself – you need to take the initiative and not expect someone to do it for you. Teach someone else and you will learn much more yourself. “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”

Who we are: UCO promotes a campus culture that fosters healthy relationships, embracing its core values of Character, Civility and Community. The Violence Prevention Project (VPP) is an essential part of encouraging this culture; making it known that violence toward any UCO community member is not condoned. The VPP is staffedby trained volunteers who help insure that if a violent act occurs against a member of the UCO community, the university will respond appropriately to the needs of the survivor, while pursuing justice for the individual. Through various resources that include information and support, both the survivor and the community have the opportunity to regain their health. The VPP office is located in the Nigh University Center, next to the College of Graduate Studies, in room 406. Hours vary each semester, depending upon volunteer staff availability. When closed, please come to the Student Counseling Center, room 402. Who We Help: The VPP assists UCO students, faculty, and staff. VPP volunteers provide assistance to both males and females. Services are provided to people of all races, ethnicities, religions and sexual orientations. The VPP assists survivors of: • Dating/Domestic Violence • Sexual Assault/Rape • Stalking If you are not sure you have experienced one of these issues, please come visit the office or call. We offer services that can accelerate any degree program by offering credit by examination. Credit by Examination Extra Institutional Examinations enable students to earn college credit based on knowledge and experience acquired outside the classroom. At the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), two kinds of examinations are used to evaluate proficiency: nationally standardized tests (CLEP and DSST) and departmental exams. UCO encourages current and prospective students to earn extra institutional credit. UCO Testing Services is a National Test Site and is open to the public. Departmental Exams Students are permitted to take departmental approved exams in courses that are offered on campus. Tests are equivalent to a comprehensive final examination, and may include a combination of objective, essay and performance. Standardized Programs (CLEP and DSST) Testing Services at UCO is a national test site for the College Board programs. Two types of examinations are used to evaluate college level experience and knowledge areas. They are the College Level Exam Program (CLEP) and DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST).

In addition to working with individual student volunteers, faculty who are incorporating service learning into their respective courses, and linking to community agencies in the OKC metro area, we also sponsor several special events that have a service focus. Central Pantry is located in the Nigh University Center Room (NUC) 203. If a volunteer is not present, please come to The VSLC, NUC Room 212 and we will assist you. Sign up today through UConnect! Safety Tips Edmond and UCO are safe communities but as with all places, anything can happen at any time. You can prevent most crime by taking some simple precautions: - Never leave your personal property (book, bags, computers, etc.) unattended. - Always keep your residence locked. The only time the door(s) to the exterior should be locked is when you or someone you know is walking through it. - If you have a car, keep the windows and doors locked at all times and keep valuables concealed in the trunk. - Be alert to your surroundings. If something doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct and move to where there are other people or take action to get to a location that makes you feel safe. - Record serial numbers along with brand name and model numbers for any items of value that you own such as electronic equipment (computers, TV’s IPods, DVD players, Etc.). - Put identifying information on the same page in every text book you own. - UCO Police can loan you an electronic engraver to mark your property with an identifying number. Just stop by during business hours for more information or call us at 974 2345. - Never give out personal information to anyone you don’t know, even if they say they need it for banking purposes, that you are the winner of a prize, etc. - Be careful what you do on the Internet and what information you provide to websites holding contests or asking for survey information. - NEVER give anyone your debit/credit card number unless you initiated the call. If you have blank checks for your checking account, keep them locked away or well hidden at all times.

Culture Shock Cultural Tips for International Students • Professors really like you to participate in class. It is okay to ask questions. This surprises many international students. The American educational experience is interactive and the University of Central Oklahoma educational philosophy is called “Transformative Learning.” This means that you will find yourself in many situations where the professor is asking you to find the answers. • Individuality: U.S. born Americans are encouraged from childhood to be independent. For example, many parents give their children an allowance (an amount of money) each month. Children usually have to work around the home in order to earn this allowance. This teaches them to plan, budget, and develop their own goals in life. • Time: U.S. Americans take pride in making the best use of their time. In the business world, “time is money”. Being “on time” for class, an appointment, or for dinner with your host family is important. U.S. Americans apologize if t hey are late. Some instructors give take off points to students who are late to class.
65
Cul t Sho ure ck
• Appointments: Likewise, most Americans are very faithful about keeping appointments. Someone who says they are going to be somewhere and then doesn’t show up is considered very rude. One must call in advance, with a polite apology, if one isn’t able to keep an appointment. • Direct & Assertive: U.S. born Americans are very much into face-to-face communication. If they have a problem with someone else, the polite thing in America is to talk directly to the person. People, who complain about someone else without talking to him or her, are often considered dishonest, or gossipy. Don’t worry too much. Remember, that Americans love to learn about your culture. If there is something you don’t understand, be direct and honest with the American. He or she will appreciate that and enjoy explaining it to you.

Study Abroad
International student, Ms. Linh Thai, from Vietnam, studied French in La Rochelle for one semester. The Centre for Global Competency (CGC) is the first of its kind. We are committed to provide exciting education abroad programs such as international internships, short term study tour courses, and meaningful study abroad programs in more than 21 countries in various parts of the world. Just because you are an international student does not mean that your education abroad ends in Oklahoma. You can study in another country with the assistance and guidance of the CGC. We have had many international students who have studied their majors in another country and even learned a third language. With more than 30 programs, you have a vast array of opportunities to choose from.
