MEN OF THE MOMENT By Grant Cole
All men, whether that be with their mothers, girlfriends or wives, have had Saturday afternoons of being dragged through clothes shops as they're forced to help decide on beige or white (which, of course, there is a distinct difference...)
If you're a guy who still sees clothes as purely something to keep you covered then you have a whole world just ready to be explored. The men of the moment are finding the clothes that perfectly show their personality and provide a sense of individuality through the way they look.
However, as time has moved on, it is increasingly common to see it the other way round. A lot of men are starting to take more notice of clothes and the way it makes them look and feel. It's these men who are the 'men of the moment' who have an increased interest in their appearance.
So how do we go about finding clothes to suit us? It can be particularly frustrating to go into a shop and feel that nothing suits us. What can help, before you go clothes shopping, is to work out which style you have and what clothes could give an interesting take on it.
This is, in part, due to men's magazines causing a revolution that has successfully tackled the view that looking good should be left for just women. It has made people realise that it isn't necessarily effeminate to go clothes shopping and, now that us men realise it, there has been a large growth in the male fashion market.
'But I don't know what my style is?' I hear you ask. Well, we all have our own styles, whether we realise it or not, and the outfits we instinctively go for. For some it may be a smart-casual mixture of something like an Oxford shirt and stone chinos with boat shoes. Others may have a more casual approach going for something like a patterned t-shirt and loose fitting jeans.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE DRESSING By Courtenay Forbes
Fashion is an ever-expanding industry that has a direct impact on how everyone dresses; from the super fashion-conscious who keep an eye on the catwalk for all the trends of the season to those who simply pick clothes for comfort and practicality, the creations of designers across the globe shape the choices we make about the clothes we wear. This has been increasingly apparent across previous years, as the latest trends have become more accessible to people of different genders, sizes, shapes and budgets. Britain's high street in particular has become known for its' huge range of the latest styles at prices better suited to the average shopper than designer alternatives. The result is that there has never been a better time for trendy Brits to develop an interest in fashion and a love of clothes. There is also a strong emphasis on fashion in the media; with countless fashion magazines to choose from, there is endless advice about how to dress.

Katie Ling: What is your collection called? Abiola Owoade: My collection is called 'The Amish Outlaw' because the inspiration came from the Amish culture and clothing. What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion? I would say be original and diligent. Where do you get your design inspiration? I get inspired from reading books, visiting museums, exhibitions and galleries as well as things and happenings around me. I also have imaginations and various things that i might have come across that I will like to explore in my research. What trends do you see being big for this winter? I think big coats and jackets with slim waist belts to give some shape are going to be everywhere this winter. High neck necklines as well. I also think pleats are still going to be around this winter. What drew you to fashion and are you thinking about starting your own line? My interest in Fashion started as natural flare and passion which remained persistent which was what made me pursue it professionally. Definitely, in the near future. I keep coming up with names but none have struck me as 'the one' yet so i am still thinking (laughs) What advice would you give a fashion newbie or student, looking to become a designer? To be passionate, be like a sponge; soaking up useful information and learning at every opportunity which could also mean going out of their way to develop some of the skills that they are not very good at.

Issue #01
Your collection has a very strong simple elegance, How did that develop? It's interesting you asked that because in terms of silhouette this collection is different from my design aesthetic which is usually more sculptural and detailed. But this collection is of simpler silhouette because the concept was from the Amish culture and clothing but with emphasis on details developed from my research finding. For example , the concept of interconnectivity of the Amish communal living was interpreted using prints and laser cut designs.
Abiola Owoade
What excites you? Researching and developing the concepts and themes for my collections. Who influences you and who do you admire? I am inspired by the work of Balenciaga and Rei Kawakubo, one of the contemporary Japanese designers. What is the simplest design you think could be in for all seasons? I think a classic shift dress is always a winner any day. What are your future plans? I am going on to finish my BA degree in one of the top fashion Universities in the UK and hopefully set up my own fashion label soon after that. How do you become inspired for a certain design? I get inspiration from different things, places and culture. It could be a word from an article or an exhibition at a Museum that will stand out to me, which will motivate me to start the research. Do you try to keep with the trends or create your own? I try to create my own trend, however being aware of what the latest trend on the catwalk shows of London and Paris are as this could also inspire me. Do you come up with concepts for designs first or is it more of a unplanned thing? I come up with a theme or concept because this gives me a sense of direction and focus with my designs even though there's always the possibility of exploring other things like fabric details or textile techniques that have previously stirred up the interest in me.
‘THE AMISH OUTLAW’ Katie Ling talks to Abiola Owoade Graduate Fashion Designer from North Hertfordshire College’s Foundation Degree in Fashion and Textiles What make you unique from other designers? I think my effective use of colour and the juxtaposition of fabric and prints gives a unique edge to my work. What famous person do you think dresses most simply elegant? I really like Gwyneth Paltrow's style. I think its simple with edge. Growing up how did you get into design? I grew up with very fashionable parents; having a natural flare for dressing up and as i grew up it turned to wanting to dress my friend's up and designing for them. My keen eye for details always wanted see perfectly fitted clothes on people. My parents encouraged me to pursue my age long passion which was fashion even after i finished my first degree as a Physiotherapist. Fashion

Love your Lunch
By Grant Cole
As you watch the clock at work, you see the second hand finally come to the end of its cycle, meeting both the hour and the minute hand at the top. It can mean only one thing. It's time for lunch! We should remember to make the most of this second meal of our day and it's been proven that people are, on average, more productive having lunch rather than working through it. It's because it's a time to relax and let our heads roll away from the rigors of finance, HR problems and pen shortages and more to the important things in life like whether a custard cream is just an albino bourbon. It's these conversations that lunch was invented for. Looking around Europe, we can find other countries that see the important of a good middle meal. Spain, for example has la comida as their equivalent of lunch that lasts from around 2:30pm to 5pm. Shops and businesses will close for this duration of time and workers return home for their biggest meal and

maybe a siesta or 'afternoon nap'. Unfortunately, in today's Britain, it seems implausible that we would ever have such a privilege and in some Spanish cities, like Madrid, they are adopting our style of short breaks meaning an earlier finish.
What this allows for the Spanish is a day where work doesn't necessarily have to be the whole focus of the day. With a three and a half hour break, the best hours of the day are free leaving people to make the most of the week. Our lunchtime can mean something like this too; it's just a frame of mind. So with this, I implore you to look forward to your lunch and escape the office for an hour and forget there are accounts you should have finished in the morning. Find somewhere to go eat, preferably an
independent with character, and sit and let your mind wander, whether with a book or conversation with a friend. When it comes down to choice, though, everyone is different and we all have our own tastes. Some, who enjoy the simple pleasures, may go for a Cheese and Pickle sandwich while the more indulgent could go for a 'Brighton Rocks' consisting of succulent crayfish in a creamy lemon mayo sauce with fresh rocket leaves. Either way, Lunch Mate located near Letchworth Train Station has a wide selection of sandwiches ranging from 'Gourmet' to 'Old Favourites. There's also an option to 'Make Your Own Sandwich. If sandwiches aren't your thing, (if there are such people!) then there are a selection of soups too and jacket potatoes with different fillings. The Spice of Life
By Matthew Bean
Welcome to Cantina Carnitas, 'the canteen of little meats' created by Matt Bean and long-time eating partner Jeff Pridmore just over a year ago in August 2011. After getting frustrated by not finding a decent burrito this side of East London, and fuelled by the explosion of street food in the UK they decided to get involved themselves. Armed with a vision of guerrilla foodfayre they had the idea of ‘popping up’ on local Farmers markets, Pub Gardens and taking over bars for short run or one off trading days with a focus on slow cooked meats and tasty treats, and after finishing a gruelling six hour non-stop burrito rolling session at an arts festival in Finchley, North London last week it looks like its paid off! The Cantina Carnitas menu is one of traditional Mexican street food; burritos and tacos filled with slow cooked meats and deep smoky flavours with an emphasis on taste rather than blow away heat. Dishes such as five hour slow cooked pork shoulder with chorizo, chicken breast with chipotle paste and apple cider vinegar, slow cooked braising steak with fresh chilli, all served with fresh salsas, guacamole, black beans, and rice. That’s not to say that lip tingling, brow searing heat isn’t on their agenda as the Cantina crew serve imported hot sauces alongside their own homemade chilli sauces, such as the Green Goblin or Scotch Bonita to bring the heat.
15
Issue #01
The Cantina difference is that as well as offering traditional Mexican food the menu covers a world flavour feel with flatbreads and wraps from across the globe- Jamaican inspired jerk chicken spicy coleslaw, American Philly steak melts, Indian Chappuritos’ chapattis filled with aromatic vegetable curries and even a Jubilee inspired roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with hot horseradish and garden vegetables. Cantina Carnitas is currently enjoying a residency at Bar Ab in Hitchin every Saturday throughout summer from 12pm-6pm. Mexican street food lovers can keep up to date with all things Cantina by checking out the Facebook page: Cantinacarnitas or by following the Cantina Crew onTwitter: @cantinacarnitas.

+ Many people are willing to spend hours of their time and much of their money to achieve a salon-looking style. However, nothing comes quite close to the feeling you get when leaving a salon with a fabulous new do; from the smallest trim to a total colour and cut overhaul, treating your hair to some salon quality can make you feel on top of the world! What makes this experience so worthwhile is knowing that your locks are in the hands of professionals who are true experts in their field.
It's amazing how different a certain hairstyle can make you feel; it's a well known fact that people are more likely to try out a drastic new hairstyle post break-up than at any other time. The way people look after their hair is seen by many as an indication of their personalities; their style, how outgoing they are, etc.
Arguably, the promise that trying a daring new colour won't end up as a disaster makes salon-hairdressing far preferable to a DIY kit! If you feel like trying out a new do for a big party, what better way to try it out than to have it done by and learn from professionals who have done the same thing to your favourite celebs? Where better to get all of this and more than Greys hair salon in Hitchin?

Fishtail Plait Step 1 First of all make sure that your hair is washed, clean and dry. Then divide your hair into eight sections, once done start to curl different strands of hair in each section for this you may use a curling iron or wand. (TIP: When curling the back of your head, if nobody else is doing it for you, don't do it with a mirror, tilt your head upside down and do it like that). Work from the bottom up. Step 2 Whilst curling, at the bottom of your hair do bigger, larger curls and as you get closer to the top of your head take smaller strands and do smaller curls. These curls should in theory be only about an inch wide. To make the curls stay in place tip your head back and use a fair bit of hairspray. Step 3 Once done, finger out the curls gently, this gives the curls a tussled look. Leaving a few strands of curls at the front pull all your hair to one side into a ponytail. Smooth back the top using a styling brush, (normal combs are too heavy to do this job, a bristle brush works much better for this hairstyle).

Danni Squire
By Danni Squire
This winter brunettes are coming back in and the style to look out for is a very natural, distressed, bedhead look.
Step 5 If you vary the thickness of the strands, this will still give quite an intricate look but also a messy delicate feel to it too. If you are a beginner you should do the strands much tighter so that you can get a feel on how to do it, however a looser plait looks messier and more how the plait was intended to look.
Step 4 Do a pick parting, (this looks like a Zig Zag). Section your ponytail into three, the messier it looks the better leave the third section at the front of your hair for later.. Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the first section. Pull this strand over the first section, and add it under the second section on the other side. So just make sure that the strand of hair has gone over the first section and ended up underneath the second section.
Step 7 To finish this beautiful intricate plait add some shine spray' (this can be bought online or at your local supermarket or beauty store). Take the third section of your hair that you left and tuck it into the back with a hair pin, cross the pins together to get an anchor pin. This will create the wind swept that is so popular on the runway this season.
Step 6 Pull another strand of hair out from the outside of the second section over this section, then weave it back under the first section. Make it as loose or as tight as you want. Keep repeating these steps until the length of your hair ends.

Eco Organic Step 1 Towel dry hair to get the moisture out. Using a product such as curl cream or a sea salt spray, apply throughout to promote texturised volume and to hold movement.
David Noble
Step 2 Taking sections of hair working from the base upwards, 'twist curl' the hair by simply 'twirling' between your forefinger and thumb into thread. These sections can be created as small or large 'twists' depending on the desired look. Larger sections will promote enhanced texture and volume. (Alternateively, plait the hair in parts.) Step 3 Once you have 'twisted' the full head, (it is not essential to do every single strand of hair as we are trying to create a very natural, dishevelled look!) Then leave to dry naturally - or alternatively you can use a diffuser on medium heat and medium speed to slowly and gently work through the hair from the ends to the root. Don't worry if you don't have a diffuser, you can always use your hair dryer (without the nozzle) slowly and gently drying the hair working down the hair shaft from top to base,

Step 4 Finally, once you have dried the hair to your desired look (styling in front of a mirror always helps!) give your hair a final blast of nice, cool air from your trusty hairdryer and a quick squirt of lightweight hairspray and you're ready to rock! Top Tip When you're on holiday - this works effortlessly whilst drying off from a swim in the sea! A BIG thank you to Danni, Dave and the rest of the team at NHC's Enhance Salon. THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER By Sarah Larkin Third Generation or 3G pitches as they are known, represent a new development in synthetic turf. The pitch itself looks like natural grass with similar playing characteristics, non-abrasive and can be used with rubber studs. The open structure gives a firmer grip and provides for better ball control. Pushing off, running, stopping or tackling are all possible without additional risk of injury. This thanks to the mix of quartz sand and rubber granules layered into the pitch, which provide effective protection and added shock absorption. The durability of the surface means that matches can be played concurrently one after the other and could provide a solution to all those matches that are postponed during wet weather. It is not just wet weather the pitch in beneficial for, in summer grass pitches harden which increases the risk of injury whilst a 3G pitch retains its impact absorbency. These pitches are the latest revolution in providing 'all weather' playing facilities with an artificial playing surface that feels like grass, looks like grass and plays like grass. It provides a more natural bounce than sand-filled astroturf pitches and provides players with a better grip, resulting in a safer and more enjoyable playing experience.

We live in an amazingly participatory world, but sometimes people think of art as something that's passive, it just hangs there on the wall, but art has layers that need to be peeled back like an onion. So you're standing in front of a painting, a sculpture, or even a building. You're looking at it, but are you really seeing it? To really get into art, all you need to do is ask yourself a few questions that will get you thinking about what you're looking at. And remember, there are no right answers to these questions - facts will help make your answers deeper, but discovering and understanding a piece of art on your own terms is both subjective and rewarding.
“ Art has layers that need to be peeled back like an onion.
There are only two questions that you really need to look at art, and those are: 'What's going on in this picture/sculpture/building?' and 'What do I see that makes me say that?'

Push yourself to get to the point where you feel comfortable jumping into a painting and exploring it, but practice makes perfect. Try visiting a museum with a friend and talking through a painting with them - you'll both see things the other one didn't, and talking about art out loud can really help you understand a piece. Every choice the artist makes is a conscious one. Figuring out the way an artist manipulates your interpretation of a piece is key to getting into the artist's head. The simple activity of 'creating art' has been understood to have therapeutic properties Covering a range of mediums including painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, illustration, design and digital media, students from the Centre for the Arts are undertaking innovative research projects, and others are engaged in inspiring artistic pursuits. They are all pursuing different activities, but all have one thing in common: through their activities they are following their passions. Visit www.cfa.nhc.ac.uk or call 01462 471061.

Art of the matter People buy art to make their house more beautiful, to fill a space or to add colour to a room. These things may be true but you could also do all these things with a poster or a piece of fabric, so why buy original art?
Remember your gut reaction is frequently the best way to choose work. Gallery 1066 have put Fine Art into the heart of Baldock as one of the most innovative and exciting art destinations in Hertfordshire.
Because art is beautiful personal and original. Selecting a work of art is a pleasurable, enjoyable experience. First you need to establish some parameters: • • •
Why are you looking to buy? Is it for your home? Is it a gift? Do you have any specific requirements? Think about dimensions of the work, the space/function of the work, materials to be used etc Do you have any particular styles, colours, materials in mind?
When deciding to buy a work of art, consider: • • •
Does it make you feel good? Is it aesthetically pleasing? Is it a piece of work you just can't imagine walking away without?

A CINEMA NEAR YOU
By Katie Ling
1. The Big Screen
10. Ushers Torches - I would love one of those they are like mini light sabers
2. The Rumble of the sub woofer through your stomach (Jurassic Park I am looking at you)
11. The nostalgic smells of popcorn
3. Sharing the film experience with a group of friends.
12. Listening to other people talking about the film in the traffic jam queue trying to leaving the screen
4. Being in a huge audience all laughing (at the correct moments).
NHC is proud to unveil its new cinema screen at the Centre for the Arts in Hitchin
5. Horror films are more scary and thrilling in a cinema
Immerse yourself in a traditional cinema experience that has been absent locally in Hitchin. Breaking from the mould of impersonal multiplex cinemas we offer some refreshing alternatives. If that isn't tempting enough, ice-cream intervals are firmly on our agenda as we believe our staging and local focus are paramount.
6. Drinking a soft drink that would keep a small family hydrated. 7. Followed by playing BLADDER Chicken. I can make it, I can make it!! 8. Seeing new trailers - they are so much more exciting on the BIG screen. Seeing The Dark Knight Rises trailer amazing!
With so much to do and see we hope you can come down and share in our traditional cinema experience. If you would like to be a part of our small cinema please call 01462 471061.
9. Watching people arrive and willing them with my brain waves NOT to sit near me!

LIVE MUSIC October at CLUB 85 North Hertfordshire's Independent Music Venue Music is always a therapy to the heart, soul and mind. Music can transform emotions; pass a message along. Live music makes it so lively and brings the feeling even more realistic. It stirs participation from both the musician and the listeners or the audience. Club 85 provide musicians with the opportunity of showcasing their talents to an audience.
“ ” When you're all focused on the music, it's the only thing that matters.
When asking people about their best Club 85 memories, the majority of the answers we received centered around the crowd itself and the overall feel of the show. A combination of genuine respect for the artist and also for your fellow concert-goers can really make an event that much better; when you're all focused on the music, it's the only thing that matters. Going to a concert makes them feel like a part of a giant family. It's an incredible thing, being surrounded by strangers who can turn into friends for one night just because you all are passionate about the same thing. 74 Whinbush Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England, SG5 1PZ www.club-85.co.uk / 01462 434801 / bob@club-85.co.uk 42

Soundtrack to your Life
By Grant Cole
Is there ever a lively track that plays in your head as you leave work on a Friday? Maybe, there's a calm track that goes well with a Sunday where you sit in the garden for hours on end, with your eyes shut.
Finally, 'Live Forever' by Oasis playing as I cycle in a British summer would make the feeling of simple content all the much stronger.
I don't mind admitting that, sometimes, I imagine an orchestral score playing as I walk through autumn leaves to the train station. I also don't mind saying that I see the band, Queen, as perfect for the time I finally beat my best friend at tennis.
One of the CDs I bought was from a band named Ash that had played at David's Music before, proving to be a highly memorable experience. As well as Ash, bands such as The Thrills and Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly have also played there, giving the place a buzz and a high reputation for showcasing the up and coming music scene.
I'm sure we all have our own examples because music is powerful and brings back powerful emotions. They latch on to memories and make events more enjoyable. We all know a house warming party would not seem as exciting without lively music and that reading a book is much more pleasant when mixed with relaxing music. The way that music colours our actions makes it important and we all have tracks that take us back to our first kiss, or a family holiday where the sun stayed warm throughout. So, if you were to look back on important points of your life, what songs would be playing? What songs would form the soundtrack to your life? With most of my friends knowing their own soundtrack, I wanted to find out for myself and went to David's Music located in Eastcheap, Letchworth Garden City, 44

just by the railway station in the heart of the Town Centre, to find the tracks that summed up my life. First, I decided Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song' a great choice for my first drive after passing my test. The power and energy right from the start was like my own, and I felt like I could yell just like Robert Plant. Then, I deemed Dylan's track 'The Times They Are A-Changin' well suited for the moment I walked into the building of my very first job. The lyrics that he sung would fit perfectly, matching the situation brilliantly
To purchase the CDs to your own personal soundtrack, David's Music, is perfect, and there is ample parking nearby, making it easily accessible. As well as CDs, David's Music also sells films and books, with David's Bookshop next door. If you aren't able to find an album, you can call 01462 475 900 and David's Music will find it somewhere else for you, making sure you're not left without an all important track.
