TA XO NOMY Rationale For the taxonomy project we were asked to collect 30 things which were all linked in some way. The collection that I chose was bottle caps, I chose these because I really loved the graphical icons on them and I thought it would be a great project to do. Throughout the research process I began to mover more and more towards ‘pop art’ as a style as the bottle caps reminded my of that bright icon style. This got me looking at ‘Peter Blake’, a well known pop artist and I really liked the college style work he had do with cropped images. Throughout the project I wanted to show people that although bottle caps are things that get through straight in the bin and not usually looked at, they should be give the appreciation that they deserve as some of them are really well designed. So for my finals I decided to create four A2 prints, which would be rung in a gallery style environment to show people ‘what they’re throwing away’. To go alongside with the prints I also created a booklet with the rest of the flat graphic bottle caps in to show the full collection. In the booklet I use the ‘Peter Blake’ style which I had found during the research stages along with a image of the bottle can in the exact size at the normal caps. I really enjoyed this brief as I liked to create flat graphic on illustrator, and I liked the bottle cap designs. I believe my final outcomes are well design and I like the concept, which I followed.
Bottle Caps
Other Collerctions After searching other peoples taxonomies I stated to look at other bottle cap collection and the different ones you can get. I then came across this collection of retro bottle caps. I really like the rich visual content on the bottle caps, they use a range of bright colours and wacky typography to create a lush composition. It makes me think of the ‘pop art’ style...
Peter Blake After having my second tutorial with Joe he told me to have a look at Peter Blake, he was a well know ‘pop artist’ who has worked on some high profile design for the likes of the Beatles. In his work he uses a different images from ‘popular culture’ and creates a sort of montage or collage.
After drawing the roughs I then decided to create choose some of the better idea and digitise them. This Idea is driven by the process from which you screen print. I have separated the colour which would then be exposed onto silk screen ready to be printed. I like this idea but I think the concept is better then the actual design.
These designs are inspired by wallpaper, they use a similar repeating pattern effect by using the bottle cap’s design to emphasize the greats design which can be found on the caps.
Similar to the colour separations in my earlier designs this is inspired by the screen printing process and I think there is something really nice when the process doesn’t quite got right, when there out of register. I really like this Idea but I would only want to create a couple of large prints in this style so I would have to thing about creating some sort of booklet to go with the prints with the other bottle caps in as all of the collection has to be shown.
This idea is influenced by some of Peter Blake’s work where by you can only see part of the image but there all put to geather in a kind of college togeather. Even though some of the icons in the caps have been cropped there still have a really night quality to them. As I am thing about creathing a booklet to have all of the caps in, I would like to use this idea in that, as I hink the clipping mask style is very eye catching. The idea also gets away form the idea that thre bottle caps and pushs more towards that fact that the pieces of graphic deisgn int there own right.
Idea Development After going through my final ideas I have chosen to create four a2 prints and a small booklet which will go along side the prints in a gallery style setup. The prints will be of four of the bottle caps blown up but I am yet to choose these caps. For the booklet I have chose to use the ‘Peter Blake’ style clipping mask technique in the booklet and here I am going through some layouts which I could implement this style. The idea behind this decision is that I wanted to create a graphic driven taxonomy and I believe I could with the bottle caps which I collected. Knowing this I wanted to concentrate on the actual graphics on the bottle caps as I think some of them are really interesting and I just like the fact that there not considered to be a nice piece of design which are disposed of immediately and not appreciated.
For the booklet layout I used the top left of these and just moved the normal sided cap to the bottle middle,

DATA VISUALISATION Rationale For the data visualisation project we had to collect ‘suitable data’ to create a visualisation. In this project I struggled to find a subject to find the data on as the original data I had collect didn’t really fit with this project. But I eventually settled on data from places I had been on holiday and short trips. I collected this data by talking to family members and looking through passports. During my research I started to look at mapping visualisations but I didn’t want to so the data in a boring mapping way, as it wasn’t new or innovative. So then I just started to look at all kinds of data visualisations and I then came across a weather visualisation which split all the days up separately so that each day had a stylised pie chart, so I decide to use this idea, but I split all my years up instead. For the individual visualisation I used GPS coordinates to map the direction and distance travelled and just left them on there own, as they worked well. The concept then grow from this and it ended up being ‘travelling since 1993’. To show my visualisation I created a A1 poster which shows all the different destinations I’ve been to. I didn’t end up spending enough time of this project as we had other projects on the go at the same time but I really like my design outcome and design decisions.
Initial Data To start off I looked at trying to gather as much information as I could so I looked at old passports, holiday photos and other memorabilia from different holidays. From this I started to create a picture of the different places I had been during my like.During collecting the data I found that I had been on quite a lot of holidays where I had been to places in the UK, but I wasn’t origenally going to include these in my collection, so I changed my mind and added them too. I also had difficulties when it came to holidays where I had been to different places, so to counteract this I added the distances together as a root taken instead of just directly to the place of arrival.
Data Reflection After finishing the data sheet I wanted to add another aspect to it, but I want the design to push this instead of thinking of some random direction. After pulling my data apart I realised it would be interesting to find out how many mile or circumnavigation of the earth I had done over my life time so far. Following the collection of my data I want to start researching different ways of maping or visualistion my data and then I will start design my own visualisations.
Travelling Brief Inspirational Quotes “Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life Michael Palin
Project Look to present the data in a efficient and eye catching manner but also keep the data legible and clear. Try to find a way of presenting the data in an interesting and alternative way than just a map of different places. Get feedback from tutors weekly and find out what they think looks good and follow.
Data Collection Collect the holiday data thoroughly and keep all data accurate. Work out how far travelled to each destination. Check Passports for trip conformation.
Outcome The outcome must be legible and show have some sort of concept which describe the piece of work.
Time frame Try to spent just a week collecting the data, to then allow your self time to thing of ways to present the visualisation. After finding a final visualisation format develop it and use different layouts to find the best we of presenting it. Keep everything up to date via blog and make sure it is well annotated.
Research During my research I have tried to split it up into two separate areas. I first looked at way of mapping my data with an interesting style but I wouldn’t find a visualisation which I found interesting, so I then started to look at other visualisation which don’t necessarily use coordinates for maps, but plotted there figures in an eye catching and visual way. I especially like pages 16 and 17 which use simple conventional graphs but put a twist on them like make a line graph 3d with ribbon or stylise a pie chart and multiplied it over a large poster. I also really liked the Hugo Boss poster, I like how it uses simple lines to create a very dynamic style. I might also use a similar gradient colour as this visualisation has used.
Idea Development I have chosen a sieres of 4 ideas which I drew roufs of earlier in my idea development. I wanted to see how these four ideas would look digitaly. I have tryed to find inspireation in all of the reach I have done.
I took this idea from part of my research about weather but I dont think it works every well for my data set. I is basicly three stylised pie charts which all give information about the year of travel, distance traveled and how many time ive been to that destination.
This is a simple but affective way of showing my world movements. I think the visualisation works better with just the bear lines and no map behind.
USA January 2014 August 2009 Febuary 3002 I don’t think this visualisation works every well, and I found it hard to line the map up with the circles from the GPS coordinates. I think it would have been better is the circles had a size to them so that it showed how many time I’d been to a certain place.

I really like how this visualisation looks and it shows my data really clearly. When I create all of the years I think the piece of work as a whole will look really nice and eye-catching. I want to look at using colour and maybe gradients. This idea came from part of my research into data visualisation which shows information about weather over different days, like my idea I it separates the days as I have the years of my life.
I really liked this idea so decided to develop it more, I wasn’t sure about the stroke profile so I am going to have a look at some others and I’m also going to look at the text placement, so I’m going to move it around and see how it looks.

After looking through most of the different possibility I preferred the this last option. The options with the text is overlapping the map line decrease the legibility of the text and therefore aren’t use about. The only thing I would like to change with the bottom option is that I want to decrease the space between the bottom text and the mapping lines.
Titles Choice To finish off the poster I wanted to put a title on it but I wanted to make sure it fitted in with the style of the visualisation. After two attempts of recreating a title layout I found the one which I wanted to use. The image below is what the final data visualisation will look like with just a few adjustments. I chose this one because the weight and point fits the grid layout, perfectly and its subtle enough to make sure it doesn’t take any attention away from the small visualisations.
Rationale For the competition brief I wanted to move out of my comfort zone and try something I’d never done before. So I chose the Morrisons in store innovation brief, which I had ideas for straight away. The innovation could not alienate or stop the current shoppers for there norm and it was needs to be aimed at the future mums of my generation. I started to thinking about what kinds of things annoy me in a supermarket and the main annoyance was queuing at a till. So I started to think of way of getting around the queuing at a till system. So I visualised myself walking into a supermarket and thought, what was the first thing I did, I picked up a shopping basket. This made me think of a ‘smart basket’, a basket which would know what items were inside it and it would also know how much you owe and take it out of a direct debit service. I brought this up in my weekly group seminar and Jack was doing the same brief as me and his mobile application idea fit perfectly with my ‘smart basket’ idea, so we decided to work together and developed the system. I believe the project went really well, this was down to me and Jack working well together. We bounce ideas off each other, when we met up and the idea developed into a massive shopping experience. We are now looking to develop the idea more and try and make it happen.
The Creative Challenge One of the richest places to experience the Morrisons brand remains the stores themselves. Such an experiential brand succeeds not just because of its great quality produce and excellent value, but because it consists of thousands of friendly staff and helpful food specialists such as Butchers, Bakers and Fishmongers who can share their expertise and make the supermarket experience a positive one, rather than a daily chore. The creative challenge is to design a series of future instore innovations that will further Morrisons mission to make food buying enjoyable rather than functional for the next generation of customers. Such innovations could be in different areas, for example; using a new technology to make the shopping experience more interactive, redesigning the store space to engage with customers in a new way or perhaps offering a new type of service. There is also an opportunity to think about the full shopping experience, one that might begin with planning the shop at home and continues when the customer gets home and experiences the products. There is the possibility to integrate these innovations with the new online shopping platform.
Mandatories The Morrisons logo, primary brand colours of yellow and green and ‘More of What Matters’ strapline can’t be changed. All ideas should be actionable in current stores and we recommend you experience them first hand to get an idea of how they currently work. Ideas may well involve redesigning elements of them but attention should be paid to making the ideas practical for implementation and with the possibility to roll them out across 500 stores.
The ideas should: • • • •
Be forward thinking and make use of new technology where appropriate. Have mass appeal. Enhance the shopping experience without disrupting the need to easily navigate around the store. Hero our love of food and make the most of our friendly and helpful Morrisons colleagues and specialists.
The Target Many current Morrisons Customers are busy Mums taking care of families on a tight budget. Food is an important part of life for these Mums, it equals full tummies, empty plates and happy social occasions. So whilst many of these Mums don’t have the time, money or inclination to be gastropub foodies, they do share Morrisons belief in good family food, often fresh and always at affordable prices. But the target for this brief is the next generation of busy family supermarket shoppers – those currently in their teens or early twenties who will have the same busy lifestyles and tight budgets but will be expecting a different kind of shopping experience than our current family shoppers. So whilst any ideas developed for this brief shouldn’t alienate our current Customer, this brief is about looking forward to the next decade of shopping experiences.
Brief Notes • • • • • •
Design a series of future in-store innovation. Make food buying enjoyable to the next generation of customers. Innovations could be; new technology, redesign in-store space, new type of service. Think about full shopping experience, starting with planning the shop and continuing through to when the customers gets home. Ideas can be integrated with new online shopping platform. The idea must have mass appeal and enhance shopping experience.

Future Technology Research In the brief there was a lot of emphasis on the words ‘new technology’ and ‘innovations’, so I thought I would do some research into what kinds of new technology could be useful for this brief.
Facial-recognition Tech ‘Tesco’ are starting to use technology which scans your face and it helps target an advertising demofraphic. This can be uses in different applications and would be good in a supermarket to advertise there produce.
RFID (Radio-frequency identification) Ths new technology is a wireless noncontact electromagnetic field which can transfer data with a close swipe. These devices are starting to be used in bank cards and id cards. This would be something that could be something that would have to replace bar codes on products or be added in-store to be of any use in the supermarket industry.
While talking to a tutor about QR codes and supermarkets he told me about Tescos in South Korea (homeplus) and that they wanted to increase there market share but it would be too expensive to build more store so they had to create a new way of shopping without speanding much money. There idea was to create some light boxes in a subway with product images in and shoppers would just scan the codes for each product to purchase them. Once the customer had finished they would pay for the produce and then it would be delivered to there house later that day.
Feedback on Ideas When I took my ideas to the tutorial this week I realised that my basket/trolley idea was my best after finding out that the recipe app had already been done. There was also another person doing the same brief as me who had a really good idea about a Morrisons network which you can connect to in-store which will give you loyalty points and other information. As he liked my idea too we decided to combine them, so when you connect to the ‘Morrisons’ network, it will know the basket thats connected to your account and start creating a recite from the stuff you put in your basket. When your finished you will be able to pay for it by direct debit through the app on the way out of the store
Development of system problems While thinking about developing the idea I started to find different problem with it and I would have to work through them to create a well rounded idea which could be practically implemented in a current store. I first looked at the fact that people could just put produce in there bags and walk straight out of the store and not get caught. This wasn’t too hard to solve as I would just have to make sure that there were RFID scanners near the doors to make sure people aren’t leaving without paying for something.
Development I am know going to develop the idea though illustrations and then start to look at how we can present it as a final piece for the competition. I think for the app would be good to see if it was a simple animation to make it look as if its being used by a customer. For the trolley/basket I will have to do some illustrations to show how they could work and try and design a way for it to connect to the network app.
There was also a problem with the detachable shopping trolleys as they may not fit into some cars because of boot space. Also people might not want to keep a shopping box/tub hanging around and taking space up. To solve this problem we can just keep the normal trolleys/baskets and just fit sensor scanners to them and you will connect to a trolley/basket when you arrive in-store. I have also thought of a safety catch where if the trolley/basket is out of a five meter radius of the phone that’s it’s connected to the shopping is void, this is to stop people steeling your trolley/basket while shopping. I am know going to start creating a proposal for the system and start thinking about designing the mobile application.
Final Idea
Shopping Process Arrive in store Open Morrison’s application and connect to the in-store network Connect to a basket or trolley Go around the store and collect the produce you want and put it straight into the smart basket or trolley. While shopping the trolley or basket will know what produce you have chosen and if you are a loyalty customer then you can get discounts on certain products. Also check the application for more in-store discounts which you wouldn’t usually have got if you didn’t choose the produce your self. Check the recipt on your phone to make sure your discounts and produce are correct. Use a exit gate to pay for the produce through a automated direct debit service on the application. Leave the store.
Idea Development Originally the trolley was just going to be a normal trolley with the sensor rim around the top but we wanted to take the opportunity to eliminate plastic carrier bags all together. So then I set out to start designing a way of integrating a detachable, enforced bag to the basket or trolley which will be reusable. I am also going to look at the design of the mobile application interface while Jack thinks about the wire frames and other technical designs.
During the project, myself and Jack met throughtout the development stages to talk about how we thought it should move forward. These are the rough drawing which I made when we started to develop the final idea.
I then started to look at the design of the interface on the mobile app. I started by looking at the different thing we needed on the application, this is when I realised we needed to make the app easy to use when your doing your showing and more complex then your using it at home. So I decided to have two sections to the application, a part for in-store with item which are in your basket or trolley and a part for when your putting your shopping list together.
I also wanted to design are own icons for the application, I used inspiration from some of the icons used in the current advertising and application. After design roughs of each icon I am going to digitise them ready for the mobile screen shots.
