“We believe architecture is about creating narratives for the community and its inhabitants. Our architecture embodies the rich culture and history from the past with the new humanitarian, cultural and sustainable values of the present. These qualities inform our design process in order to create architecture that seeks to accommodate and foster a sense of place - a meaningful architecture that invokes sensation, not merely a machine we engage with.” JIMMY WARDHANA 黃業雄 Co-founder and Principal at JWCC Architecture

Our practice was formed as a result of the founders’ common vision of achieving design excellence for our clients, through constant research and innovation in areas of architectural, interior, and green building design. From the beginning, we have fostered a culture that puts our clients’ needs at the forefront of everything that we do. By employing a multi-disciplinary team of motivated, talented and passionate professionals, we bring to the table fresh and innovative ideas on how to create the ideal concept, which takes into account a broad range of considerations. We don’t just strive to create a functional design, but aim to enhance the end-users’ experience when interacting with the space we have developed with their unique requirements in mind. We understand that each project is different, with its distinctive set of goals and a specific group of end-users. We approach our collaboration with our clients as a dialogue, where we look closely at their vision, needs, design ideas and both short and longterm business objectives of the final project. Through a collaborative process that embraces our team’s ideas, diverse experience and cultural backgrounds, we aim to create spaces that accommodate their core purpose, are contemporary, timeless, and long-lasting. In addition, we pay close attention to the impact our designs have on both the natural environment and the urban landscape they will be a part of. We are experienced in working on both small and large-scale projects, involving a wide range of budgets. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that the final outcome offers a sound return on your investment, while meeting your experiential, functional and technical requirements. Whatever the size and purpose of your project, from a small residential refurbishment to a large-scale public development, our team will work with you to help you realise your vision and aspirations.

ONE GUIA HILL Project:

Luxury Residential Development

Location:

Macau

Phase:

Under Construction

One Guia Hill is a low-density luxury residential development situated in the extraordinary location of the UNESCO World Heritage precinct of Guia Hill, adjacent to the international Grand Prix track of Macau. The development comprises of 24 apartments and 6 premium penthouse units. Our design approach involves a contemporary reinterpretation of green city living as a response to the idyllic location of Guia Hill. Surrounded by walking trails and beautiful outdoor environments, the residents are provided with a wealth of options for recreational activities. The façade construction is composed of large glazed walls and windows to capitalize on the wonderful views on offer and to increase the visual and sensory connection between the building’s interior and exterior surroundings. In addition, each apartment is provided with a generous terrace to provide a private oasis for each individual residence. Stone is used as an accent material to merge the glass façade with the context of its natural surroundings. The result is that the building appears to seamlessly blend into its environment, without clashing with this extraordinary location. The impressive natural environment is also brought into the interior of the building by the use of internal greenery elements, including a double-storey landscape wall to create a compelling contemporary space which acts as a connection with the landscape of Guia Hill beyond. The sophisticated interiors of the individual residences feature high quality finishes, kitchen joinery and sanitary fixtures, as well as state-of-the-art appliances and fittings. In addition, each apartment is equipped with a smart home automation system to provide residents with the added comfort and convenience to complement a modern city lifestyle.

ONE GUIA HILL PRIVATE RESIDENCE

ONE GUIA HILL PENTHOUSE RESIDENCE Project:

Penthouse Apartment

Location:

Macau

Phase:

Design Stage

The penthouse residence at One Guia Hill is inspired by traditional Chinese architecture through the use of warm timber elements, patterns and textures, which are set against cooler and dark earth tones to create an ambience that carries on the prestige and luxury of its prominent location at One Guia Hill. The generously sized, 660 square metre split-level penthouse provides an opportunity for a contrasting material palette to be applied between the upper and lower floors. On the lower floor, a dark, earth-toned palette was selected, which is complemented by a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Chinese timber screening elements and movable partitions that add a sophisticated and fashionable touch to the living spaces. The open staircase, adorned with carefully selected art pieces to match the interior design, acts as the central hub connecting the living, kitchen and private upper floor areas. On the upper floor, a softer material palette with amber tones was selected to create an ambience of intimacy. Similar screening elements are applied to the upper floor to replace existing solid wall partitions, thereby creating a connection between the double-storey living area and the master bedroom. All interior equipments are designed to work with the in-built smart home automation system.

THE STUDIO Project:

30 studio apartments development

Location:

Macau

Phase:

Under Construction

The Studio is a six-storey, 30-unit apartment development located within a few minutes’ walk to Macau’s heritage precinct and the heart of the city. The new building facilitates a transition between the different styles and scale of the two neighbouring buildings. Our design approach focuses on integrating the contemporary design within the complex and established streetscape. The external treatment of the building is designed to introduce a sense of play in elevation, whereby the façade elements have an inverse relationship to the size of the apartments. As a contrast to the densely built-up commercial area surrounding the site, a central atrium is introduced to create a sense of openness, as well as providing natural ventilation throughout the lift lobbies and common corridors. The landscape roof acts as a breathing space and a green retreat for the residents, and a means to escape from the busy streets of Macau.

NOVA CITY Project:

Three bedroom apartment for a young family of four

Location:

Macau

Phase:

Completed at 2013

The design of the Residence in Nova City is based on a clear brief from the client – to maximize visual connections within the apartment for interactions with the family, to maximize storage space to avoid a sense of clutter, and to offer spatial flexibility to accommodate for regular guest visits. Our design approach places an emphasis on the play of spatial separation techniques. The use of movable partitions creates a multipurpose room adjacent the living area, which can be closed to be used as a guest room, or be fully opened to become an open study and an extension to the living space. The brief also called for a practical, functional kitchen to cater for the demanding daily cooking activities – thus the idea of a mirror and wall opening was adopted to increase the visual connection between living/ dining areas and the kitchen, while separating the food preparation activities from the rest of the apartment. Being a young family with children, the apartment was also customized to suit the needs of a growing family; with glazed partitions and sliding screens to help the parents monitor their children, lounging and display nooks at bay windows, and ample storage to achieve a clean and comfortable home for clutter-free living.

ONE GRANDTAI Project:

Five bedroom apartment for a family of four

Location:

Macau

Phase:

Design development Stage

One Grandtai Residence is a five-bedroom apartment that explores the theme of understated luxury. Our design approach emphasizes the harmony between different spaces with a subtle, neutral material palette and carefully selected pieces of furniture. The material palette is based on a selection of stone and timber finishes that bring out the unique qualities of the materials by its subtle variances, creating an effect of depth and interest for the spaces. This forms an underlying texturally rich backdrop to each individual space in the apartment, which are then differentiated by unique design features – stone finishes in the living areas to create a sense of prestige, and timber finishes in bedrooms which invoke a sense of intimacy and warmth.

ONE CENTRAL Project:

Holiday getaway for an elderly couple

Location:

Macau

Phase:

Completion

One Central Residence is a holiday apartment in Macau designed for the parents of one of our clients. The challenge in this project involves striking an ideal balance between the luxurious qualities of a high-end hotel and the warmth and comfort that one would expect in their own home. The design and detailing of the entrance foyer aims to create an extension of the hallway in order to achieve a gentle and smooth transition from public and private space, celebrating the arrival into a luxurious holiday apartment. The base material palette is composed of stone and special paint finishes to provide a sense of understated luxury. Juxtaposed against the base palette are warm tones of fabrics, wood, paint finishes, and selected pieces of artworks and furniture that contribute to a sense of warmth and intimacy amidst the luxurious design touches. As a holiday home, storage space was given less priority in order to maximize the openness of the space, which is set against stunning views of the Macau Tower.

1828 CULTURAL CENTRE Project:

Mix Used Adaptive Reuse Development

Location:

Nam Ping, China

Phase:

Design Conceptual Stage

1828 is a mixed-use development project in Nam Ping, China, which comprises of a cultural event hall, hotels, restaurants, retail spaces and commercial facilities. The site contains a collection of vacant factory buildings from the 1970’s, which presents a unique opportunity for creative adaptive re-use to bring out the rich cultural heritage of the Nam Ping area. The design approach is two-fold – firstly to selectively emphasize and reinforce the existing architectural elements within the site, and secondly to introduce elements of traditional Chinese architecture into the art district complex. Our goal was to maintain a cohesive visual and experiential bond among the different groups of buildings, while at the same time creating a new identity for the site as a social and cultural hub. The front façade of the hotel was partially upgraded, and subtle redesign work was applied within the art district. This creates a distinct

53

contrast between the commercial and cultural elements. On the other hand, a feature canopy was introduced to link the different programs within the site, while also acting as a visual device to draw focus towards the main entrance – a traditional Chinese gateway juxtaposed against the prominent 1828 logo. The internal main street continues the traditional Chinese influence with a contemporary interpretation of the traditional roof in Chinese architecture. The rear façade unifies the architectural geometry with the use of a screening element, which also acts as a blank canvas for potential temporary banner displays.

Phase:

Completed in 2014

The Teschic Retail Store is a luxury store in the Macau Fisheran’s Wharf offering contemporary, high-end designer handbags and accessories. The main design concept was to implement a fashion catwalk experience that would lead the customer on a carefully considered journey from arrival, selection, to sales and after sales services. The interior design contributes to the customer experience from the use of intricate, elegant stone materials juxtaposed against glass and mirror finishes. A sense of theatre is achieved by designing the main pathway as a fashion runway, while the careful placement and display of merchandise is similar to that of an art gallery or museum. At the end of the pathway, a generous lounge area provides a place where customers can relax and unwind while making their selections and purchases, thereby creating a thoughtful, personalized shopping experience.

MARVELLA FLAGSHIP STORE Location:

Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, Macau

Phase:

Completed in 2014

Marvella of Fisherman’s Wharf in Macau marks JWCC Architecture’s first flagship retail project. It seeks to define a new type of luxury for a young contemporary jewelry brand. The design concept of Marvella derives from the idea of “caving”, which is to bring customers into a natural and serene environment away from the hustle and bustle of the city, allowing them to explore the showcase of luxury goods at their own pace and comfort. We aim to translate the brand image into an architectural language through the use of materials. Luxury marbles and metal frames are the key elements throughout the interior, the tactility are created by the composition of different surface finishes. Moreover, the entry façade derives from the idea of diamond or crystal facets, creating a subtle variation of light reflections as one passes accompanied by a traditional French door to mark the origin of the brand. A darker palette was selected for the “haute couture” section of the shop. Textiles are carefully selected to create a more ambient environment. This area distinguishes itself from the jewellery area acting as a backdrop to the entire retail space.

CROWN RESORT MACAU OFFICE Location:

Macau

Phase:

Completion in 2013

JWCC was awarded the design and build project of the Crown Resort Offices in the FIT Centre, Macau in 2013. The office serves as the new local headquarters of Crown Resorts and is a central hub for their local and international clients and colleagues. Upon entry, the visitor is presented with a feature display corridor with direct visual connections to the office workspaces. As a shift away from the traditional office typology where prime views are exclusively allocated to private offices, offices and open workspaces are both arranged along the glass wall perimeter, with glazed partitions which allows sufficient daylight to filter through to the entire workspace and meeting rooms. The material palette is composed of various accents of yellow set against a neutral base palette to complement the brand image of Crown Resorts.

HOTEL IFU

HOTEL IFU Project:

Boutique Hotel Development

Location:

Macau

Phase:

Under Construction

IFU Hotel is a boutique hotel comprising of 41-keys, which incorporates the location’s rich history with traces of the Portuguese heritage. Located on a historic site which used to be Macau’s main fishermen’s port, the site still carries the legacy of a traditional fishing quarter. The client’s intention was to allow travellers to experience the local cultures of Macau in a small, intimate hotel setting. The interior design was driven by a material palette that reflects the tactility and vernacular of the location’s history. This approach was applied throughout the hotel’s reception, bar and guest rooms. On the other hand, the architectural built form is defined by clean geometric shapes, driven by the existing streetscape that forms the wider urban context. Each level of the hotel adopts a variation on the overall scheme, providing guests a different experience and a sense of anticipation on each return journey.

HOTEL RIO Project:

Hotel room upgrades

Location:

Rua Luis Gonzaga Gomes, Macau

Phase:

Phase 3 construction

As part of Rio Hotel’s facilities upgrade and redevelopment plans, JWCC was appointed to lead the adoption of a completely new design approach for their hotel rooms. The original hotel rooms at Rio’s are generously sized – a quality that we had retained and further enhanced by incorporating built-in furniture and joinery elements into the architectural fabric. The effect is that the perception of openness is heightened by an integrated interior space without the cluster of free-standing furniture. The restrained material palette is composed of gold and brown hues, which reflects Rio’s brand colours. The overall design conveys an intimate, contemporary style, which is a significant contrast from the original scheme.

FELIZ CLUB / PARADOR

FELIZ CLUB / PARADOR Project:

Interior Design

Location:

Peking, China

Phase:

Completed in 2010

The Feliz Club and Parador is a club and restaurant complex that comprises of a wine cellar, a Spanish restaurant and a retail showroom for artistic pieces and furniture items from around Europe. In harmony with the overall concept of the complex, the acclaimed interior design has been derived from European influences. The atrium at the centre of the basement allows for sunlight to spread all the way to the lowest level. The windows and glazed doors are surrounded by greenery, creating an internal garden reminiscent of the European outdoors.

The Wine Collection Museum located at the centre of the basement is enclosed by a curved corridor, providing the main access point to various functional areas. Fine details and the intricate material palette create an overriding European look and feel in the interiors – a feature brick wall, curved corridor, antique wall lamps, ceiling arches, solid timber doors to the wine cellar, and a round ceiling with changing nebula patterns in the wine tasting area, which all contribute to an unforgettable experience similar to being in an eighteenth century Spanish castle. Located next to the wine cellar, the Spanish restaurant offers a spacious dining area and more than a dozen VIP rooms in different sizes each with their own unique styles of decoration, creating a strong artistic harmony for each space.

NINGHE HOTEL

NINGHE HOTEL Project:

Hotel Renovation

Location:

Tian Jin, China

Phase:

Completed in 2011

Ninghe Hotel was originally a property owned by the Ninghe Government and was previously used as a 3-star guesthouse accommodation. JWCC was appointed to transform this existing property into a 5-star hotel. The success of this project meant that the hotel not only became a landmark in the area, but is also used by the Government as a precedent for landscape design guidelines for nearby districts. The design approach focuses on implementing a contemporary style with simple, understated and durable materials. Due to the strict budget considerations, our approach was to achieve maxi-mum added value by delivering characteristics of a high-end hotel where it matters most. While the original structure of the building and its glazed curtain wall were retained, the exterior of the building has been clearly upgraded by the application of a new façade treatment composed of a careful balance of stone, metal and aluminium finishes. The interior design scheme involves an elegant and modern material palette. The colourful glazing on the top floor emphasizes the vivid lighting from the Atrium Bar and the luxury suites at the top levels of the hotel, which also creates a magnificent landscape at night time. The project has been a great success, demonstrating how a clever design approach can help sustain our natural environment while adding considerable value to our client’s assets.

CLUBHOUSE VANKE

Project:

Conversion of residential development to Prestige Luxury Clubhouse

Location:

Tian Jin, China

Phase:

Completed

The prestigious Vanke Clubhouse consists of six storeys and two basements, with a host of facilities including a restaurant, wine bar, cigar bar, events hall, spa, swimming pool, gym, VIP area and business centre. A double height foyer creates a focal point upon entry, with a sculptural spiral staircase that connects the foyer to an upper-level function hall. A gallery and common breakout space alongside the foyer adds to the stylish clubhouse setting, accentuating the quality of openness. The initial brief for the Vanke Clubhouse was to provide a high-end clubhouse facility for its members. As a reinterpretation of ‘luxury’ in the local sense, which focuses heavily on material finishes and decorations, we have presented a fresh and contemporary approach that focuses on construction detailing and spatial quality. On the exterior, a contemporary steel framed glazed façade feature growing out of an ordinary masonry construction presents a point of difference from what one would expect in a typical clubhouse. On the other hand, the reinterpretation of luxury in the interior is focused on spatial quality, ambience, sensory perception and lifestyle. An emphasis is placed on the texture of materials and colour palette to suit the function of each space. In addition, fine attention to detail provides a delicate, comfortable environment for Clubhouse members to enjoy through the controlled articulation of lighting, scale, sound and ambience.
