IN THE GARDEN
SOMEHOW, the month of August always manages to sneak up on us. Just as we settle into our summer routines and return from much anticipated vacations, backto-school preparation begins to loom ominously over many of our to-do lists. This year I have vowed to savor the last of our unhurried days while enjoying the seasonal gifts nature bestows— ripe heirloom tomatoes, juicy peaches, sweet corn on the cob, and warm evenings that envelop us as only Midwestern August evenings can, to name a few.

The Dish, and a feature that has us eagerly anticipating the Tokyo Olympic Games. Leaning into autumn, we share style that will take you from one season to the next, an off-to-college story in The Sporting Life, and our Back to School 101 feature—a road map for shifting gears and setting your family up for success.
Speaking of shifting gears, our daughter will move from her year spent dancing with the Joffrey Ballet Conservatory to attending NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, so we will be among the ranks of those preparing for school. Our son—who graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in May—will make one of life’s great changes, beginning his professional life in Chicago. I am immensely proud of them both and look forward to observing from the sidelines (ready to offer an assist when they allow!) as they navigate the next legs of their journeys.
Thank you for reading. I wish you a happy August and smooth sailing throughout the coming weeks.

2020 WAS A difficult year for most, but for Reading Power—an early literacy tutoring program with roots in Lake Forest—it was a year of wow.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230510182943-8630735c43f5da22d982a10701359272/v1/a5869e290f894938ef9f319644b4a7bc.jpeg)
Working in partnership with underserved schools, Reading Power is a non-profit organization that provides one-to-one tutoring during the school day for children in prekindergarten through second grade. Their mission—Fostering the Promise of Literacy—is to accelerate children’s literacy learning by developing their love of reading and writing.
“When the world shut down last year, we knew our students needed us more than they ever did before,” says Kathy McFarland, PhD, Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Board for Reading Power. “So, we went back to work in a way we never imagined.”
Reading Power’s staff created a virtual tutoring program for their North Chicago kindergarten through second grade students. The virtual program was further enhanced by Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business who partnered with Reading Power last fall.

“Our pioneering virtual tutors did what it took to connect with their students,” Dr. McFarland explains. “And it worked.” This year, 110 students received oneto-one virtual tutoring with very promising results.
Marra Lochiatto, Vice Chair of the board who has been tutoring with Reading Power for the last eight years, had a front seat to many success stories.

“There was a definite learning curve for all of us,” Lochiatto says. “But there were so many sweet moments, too, as we learned to use the technology to keep our students engaged. There was so much more than reading instruction happening. We’ve been given valuable tools to build the student’s confidence and self-esteem and this was even more important during the pandemic.”
Each of the more than 250 Reading Power highly trained tutors receives nine hours of training before being matched with a student, and then ongoing professional development throughout the school year. Tutors are asked to commit to being on site at a school one day per week for two to three hours, depending on the program served. Programs are offered in the mornings and afternoons and the average student receives over 50 sessions per year.
“Our sites have 8-15 tutoring stations to meet the needs of at-risk students. A scale that school districts just can’t provide. At the heart of our program is the in-person, one-to-one, in-school experience,” says Dr. McFarland. “But going forward, we’ll keep a digital component as well.”
Reading Power’s program is so effective and the need is so great, it is extending the tutoring year and
expanding its footprint to include schools in Waukegan and Zion this fall. There has even been talk about leveraging Reading Power’s digital learnings beyond Lake County, IL.
“Research shows that if we intervene with children in their early years and have them reading by third grade, students are five times more likely to graduate from high school,” Dr. McFarland says. “And those who don’t graduate from high school are three times more likely to be incarcerated.”
Reading Power is hosting its first-ever Play for Literacy Golf & Games event on September 13 at Onwenstia Club. It will be a day filled with golf, canasta instruction and play for non-golfers, and cocktails and dinner for all. Lochiatto, who is chairing the event, says that the planning committee has worked hard to ensure that there is something for everybody.
“Everyone who touches Reading Power becomes passionate about what we’re doing,” Dr. McFarland says. “We’re hosting this event so that more people can know our story, support us, and help us reach more students in need. As we said at our recent anniversary, our work is not done. 2020 taught us that our work really, really isn’t done.”

VILLA GATSBY, LET THE 2020s ROAR!
Lake Forest’s awardwinning live professional theater company, Citadel Theatre, is set to celebrate a milestone anniversary with one extraordinary gala this September.
CITADEL THEATRE, a live professional theatre company in Lake Forest, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with “Villa Gatsby, Let the 2020s Roar!”—the organization’s 7th annual gala. The event’s inspiration springs from author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald modeled main character Daisy Buchanan after Ginevra King, a Lake Forest socialite with whom he fell in love during his college years.
“Villa Gatsby, Let the 2020s Roar!” will be held on September 25 at the David Adler-designed estate home of Nancy and Adrian Smith at 830 North Green Bay Road in Lake Forest. The evening will include a tour of the home, guest house, and grounds. A seated dinner, silent and live auction, live entertainment, and dancing will also take place, with a possible repeat of unexpected swimming at the end of the evening.

Citadel Theatre, founded in 2002, seeks to provide a creative haven for passionate, visionary theatrical artists and a home for audiences seeking the emotional and intellectual richness that quality theater inspires. Its award-winning mainstage produces a variety of theatrical productions spanning the genres of comedy, drama, musicals, the classics, and new works.
The company’s mission is fulfilled through mainstage productions, community engagements, and the Citadel Cares program, which makes theater accessible to underprivileged
individuals and families by working with park districts, senior centers, veteran and military groups, and other local nonprofit organizations. Its education program is integral to the organization as well. Designed to mold the next generation of theatre professionals, Citadel Theatre classes give students the opportunity to explore, create, and discover their artist within.
Founded by a group of actors wanting to bring the experience of professional theater to Lake Forest, Citadel Theatre was conceived in the basement of the Gorton Community Center as an alternative to Chicago theater. Citadel quickly outgrew the space, moving in 2009 to a new 144 seat theater. Since moving, Citadel has expanded its educational programs; become an Equity Theatre Company (2015); launched the Citadel Cares Program (2016); and won its first Jefferson Award (2018). Over the last 16 years, Citadel has blossomed into a thriving, intimate theater company that is beloved by the community of Lake County.

THE THING MY COUSIN TAUGHT ME
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230510182943-8630735c43f5da22d982a10701359272/v1/3fe9e9c2bc1085e2257329a0faea11a2.jpeg)
MY COUSIN AND I exchange flurries of texts, often after a night of high-alert parenting or because one of us has committed some random act of self-sabotage like spontaneously putting our house up for sale or agreeing to run a half-marathon. When our thumbs tire of texting, we pick up the phone.
Mostly, we reassure one another that we aren’t the worst mothers in the world. At least, we aren’t as bad as our moms were, you know, with their second-hand smoke and lawn Jarts. Our moms let us dance behind mosquito abatement trucks until the dewy fog of DEET collected like sequins on our eyelashes, hair, and skin. We played dress-up with dry cleaning bags. We talk to remind each other we’re doing just fine.
Last August, I was a bit of a mess.
August discombobulates me. For a month that brands itself as ‘summer’, it comes with a tremendous amount of paperwork. August is a reverse mullet: party in the front, business in the back. It’s all blue-skies-and-beaches until you’re panic buying extra-long sheet sets.
I was whining to my cousin. I sighed, ‘I’m tired. I wake up and I’m exhausted.’ She paused before replying, ‘It kinda sounds like you’re lonely. Are you lonely?’
It was like someone pricked the thin, strained membrane that contained my swollen, wobbly emotions. I burst, instant ugly crying. Yes! That white noise of heartache was loneliness! But how? I was crammed COVID-style in a house with people I loved. I have dear friends who forward snarky memes.
I dove into loneliness research. I now fancy myself to be something of a Loneliness Ambassador. (Imagine how much fun I am at a dinner party.)
Remember how we all grew up hating Brussels sprouts and then someone stepped up and ordered everyone in the whole world to start roasting Brussels sprouts instead of boiling them and now we’re all absolutely gaga over Brussels sprouts, happily stampeding to any restaurant that artfully grates or *gasp* mixes them in a bacon/sweet potato medley? I want to do that for Loneliness, transform Loneliness’s unpalatable reputation. I want to be Loneliness’s PR girl.
Loneliness is simply a signal that we’re longing for emotional closeness—a close confidant or more meaningful friendships. Perhaps our souls crave a night out singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the top of our lungs with a few hundred strangers. Humans need trusted companionship, authentic friendships, and a community with shared interests to thrive, to feel whole. Loneliness isn’t a sign that we are unlovable.
A steady diet of loneliness can lead to all shades of suffering and sadness, but, loneliness is not a life sentence. You hold the cure. I hold the cure. The cure for loneliness is human connection. Bam! That’s it. Connect with people. Amazingly, when we connect, when we fill someone else’s loneliness bucket, we often fill our own. Everyone wins.
We’ve been in varying degrees of isolation. It can feel awkward or downright terrifying to reconnect with people, but loneliness is a chicken/egg situation: you may not feel ready to connect, but by connecting, you will feel stronger and, well, more connected.

Here’s the best part: connection is contagious. Connection grows and spreads rapidly through eye contact, smiles, curiosity, conversations, vulnerability, kindness, passion, and shared action. The more we connect, the more grounded we feel. The more grounded we feel, the more we connect.
We possess the greatest power on earth: to lift each other. Connection is free. It’s one smile away. To feel and spread connection we need only one thing: to make a move.

SWEET CORN AND BACON PIE
Nestle one of late summer’s favorite ingredients—sweet corn—into a decadent filling then tuck into a flaky crust for this unforgettable spin on a classic dish.

THE WAITRESS at Ernie Risser’s family restaurant in Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania, watches me looking dubiously at the gravy boat she plunked down with the corn pie I ordered. Assuming we’re in cahoots, she leans in and whispers, “I like to eat corn pie with hot milk, too!” and winks conspiratorially. Whisking away the gravy, she returns with a little pitcher of milk. Stranger and stranger, think I, new to these small-town Pennsylvania gustatory habits. The savory pie wasn’t bad, though bland. So, before I left, it had me plotting something more flavorful and akin to my Midwest upbringing: Homemade creamed corn with bacon and onion. What if I put THAT in a flaky pie crust? The result is this lovely recipe. To make it, cut fresh sweet corn from the cob, simmer it in a peppered white sauce with smoked bacon, onion, and red pepper, put it in the pie crust and while it bakes, slice some home-grown tomatoes to serve on the side. And you can skip the Womelsdorf pitcher of hot milk!

Ingredients
For the double-piecrust:
• 9-inch pie dish
• 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 teaspoons sugar
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup (two sticks) very cold unsalted butter
• 4 to 5 tablespoons very cold cream or evaporated milk
• Egg wash made by whisking 1/2 cup milk with one egg
For the filling:
• 5 or 6 f resh ears of sweet corn (enough to make 3 1/2 cups of kernels)
• 1/3 lb. uncured smoked bacon (cooked, bacon bits should measure 1/2 cup)
• 1 medium onion, peeled and diced to make 3/4 cup
• 1/4 cup sweet red pepper, cored, seeds removed, and very finely diced
• 2 teaspoons salt, divided (or slightly less–to taste)
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 1 cup whole milk
Method
Make pie crust: Sift flour, sugar, and salt together. Cut butter into flour mixture with two knives or fingertips until mixture resembles wet sand with some pea sized bits in it. Add evap-
orated milk (or cream.) Mix with a fork until pastry begins to pull together. Turn pastry out onto sheet of plastic wrap and knead through the plastic to form into a ball. Cut in half. Wrap each half of the pastry in plastic wrap, then flatten into two disks. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
While dough chills, make filling: Cut corn off all of the cobs. Measure 3 1/2 cups of kernels into a large mixing bowl. Set aside. Brown bacon in frying pan until fat has rendered and bacon is well cooked. Remove to a separate bowl using a slotted spoon, leaving bacon fat in skillet. Sauté onion in bacon fat for two minutes, stirring often. Add 1/4 cup water and cover, simmering until onion is very soft but not brown. Stir corn and red pepper into onion. Add 1/2 cup water. Cover. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until corn is hot through and loses “raw” flavor. Season with 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp freshlyground pepper. Remove to a bowl.
Melt butter in sauté pan. Whisk in flour and toast for three minutes. Whisk in 1 cup of evaporated milk (or regular whole milk) until a smooth white sauce forms. Season to taste with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt and more freshly ground pepper. Add corn mixture to white sauce. Stir in bacon. Mix well.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out one of the pie pastry disks and fit into bottom of a 9-inch pie dish. Fill pie with corn filling, mounding in the center. Roll out second pie pastry disk and top pie. Decoratively crimp edge. Brush top of pie with egg wash. Cut slits in top of pie to vent steam. Place pie on center oven rack and bake for 40 to 45 minutes until top of pie is nicely browned and filling is bubbling. Let pie cool on a rack for at least 15 minutes before cutting.

THE AWARD-WINNING Telegraph Road Gardens in Lake Forest were designed— and have been nurtured by—The Deerpath Garden Club of Lake Forest (DGCLF) members, in partnership with the City of Lake Forest, since the Gardens’ inception in the early 1990s. On June 24, the DGCLF dedicated new additions to their Telegraph Road Train Station Gardens and Garden of Remembrance. Called “The Grove,” the enhancement is an assemblage of trees located at the corner of Conway and Telegraph Roads.
The project was inspired by a donation from the Winemaster family in honor of their deceased mother, Maureen Winemaster, a long-serving member and two-time president of the club. Current club President Cindy Ramadan and Philanthropy Co-Chairs Mary Carlson and Connie Maines worked in collaboration with a team from the City of Lake Forest to bring the club’s vision to a reality. Guests at the event included members of the Winemaster family and Eileen Looby Weber, Fourth Ward Alderman and Chair of the City’s Beautification Committee. Also in attendance was Chuck Meyers, Superintendent of Parks and Forestry and his team. Following the event, club members enjoyed a celebratory luncheon at Elawa Farm.
In 1960, the Deerpath Garden Club of Lake Forest (DGCLF) was formed by friends in the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff communities to share a love of horticulture, promote civic beauty, and educate themselves about landscaping, plant life, and the art of floral arranging. From those simple beginnings, a vibrant

group blossomed. Over this period, the DGCLF—a member of the Garden Clubs of Illinois and the National Garden Clubs— has become a philanthropic force, donating tens of thousands towards beautification projects in the immediate community, as well as providing significant funds for beautification projects of other worthy entities. A | Holly has been a cyclist for 28 years and knows all too well how out of balance the body gets from this sport. She developed a program to counterbalance the negative effects of being in the saddle for hours. Specifically, Holly focuses on the neck and shoulders, hips and hip flexors, hamstrings, and spinal posture. She teaches cyclists how to strengthen the opposite muscles which in turn increases the flexibility to these areas of the body with the result of a faster and more powerful endurance cyclist.
Q | How can you help the average client who just wants to get in better shape?
A | We work with clients of all ages and backgrounds from being sedentary to the elite athlete and everything in between. Each client receives an extensive evaluation to determine their specific needs. As a team, we decide on measurable and realistic goals. We use a combo of personal training exercises, Pilates, and PT exercises to design client programs. Every workout is different and tailored. Contact us today!

Lake Forest High School graduate and highly successful Scouts
wrestler Bennett Duggan hangs up his singlet to pursue a degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois.
words by Bill McLeanphotography by Robin Subar
AREFEREE GRABS a wrestler’s right hand and raises it. A round of applause rings out in the arena, giving the victor his immediate, audible “medal.”
“There aren’t many things better than that in wrestling,” says Bennett Duggan, a 2021 Lake Forest High School graduate who experienced the raised hand 33 times in 35 matches in his senior season.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230510182943-8630735c43f5da22d982a10701359272/v1/4e18be677ad4dcecf6d932cb7ef85ada.jpeg)
“Right up there, too, is the feeling I got after executing a move perfectly,” adds the state’s reigning Class 2A third-place finisher in the 160-pound weight class. “That was always
extremely satisfying.”
For years Duggan thought he’d grab his high school diploma and spend the rest of the summer preparing for the start of a promising Division I career in college wrestling. Coaches at the University of North Carolina envisioned Duggan, adorned in a powder-blue singlet, pinning Atlantic Coast Conference grapplers regularly after wearing them out with his extraordinarily effective low-single leg takedown.
UNC coaches wanted Duggan, badly. But the school’s admissions folks in Chapel Hill wanted him to wait, so they wait-listed him.
Duggan then chose to look elsewhere. His reaction to UNC’s decision in January startled him.
“I was surprised that I was actually as relieved as I was sad,” he recalls. “I loved the sport of wrestling for years and never thought it wouldn’t be a part of my life in college. But what I discovered, what was most revealing to me, was not feeling crushed after hearing about being wait-listed and realizing I wouldn’t get to achieve what I thought was one of my dreams.”
“That is the first time it struck me that it might be time to move on from wrestling,” he adds.
Duggan was accepted at the University of Illinois, and none other than former standout Highland Park High School and Illini wrestler Mike Poeta—Duggan’s youth coach at Poeta Training Center in Lake Forest—was named Illinois’s head wrestling coach in April.
“A spot had opened in his program, and Coach Poeta was interested in having me fill it,” says Duggan, who plans to major in Food Science and Human Nutrition in Champaign. “I appreciated his interest, but I thought about it and told him in May, ‘College wrestling is not for me.’ ”
“It was a very difficult statement for me to make given the opportunity being offered by Coach Poeta,” Duggan added. “But, as I saw happen with a number of my friends in other sports, I was starting to feel burned out by the beginning of my final season. We dedicate so much physical and mental energy to the sports we love that it can tire you out by the end of high school. For me, I don’t regret for a second the work I’ve put into this sport, since I credit the sport of wrestling for making me who I am today, but I feel it is the right time to hang up my shoes.”
High school wrestling was Duggan’s Eden. A two-time Illinois High School Association (IHSA) regional champion, sectional champion, and a two-time North Suburban Conference Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recipient, Duggan was named a varsity team captain—the youngest in program history—before his sophomore season and served that role in each of his final two seasons under Scouts coach Matt Fiordirosa. Duggan also broke the school records for most pins and most team points, and but for the pandemic cutting his final season in half, he was on pace to easily become the winningest wrestler in school history.
“Bennett,” Fiordirosa says, “was always willing to give a kid a ride or encourage someone to join him in a run or lift. He was a true student of the sport and very organized. I sent him to a wrestling camp and asked him to take notes on what he learned there. Bennett came back with a typed and printed document in a binder.
“Off the mat,” the coach adds, “Bennett has a personality similar to mine—bubbly and positive. We both have that ‘No Bad Days’ mentality. My entire family loves him, and my kids cry when they don’t see him enough.”
Some athletes lead by example. Others rely on the spoken word to spur and instill confidence.

Duggan was capable of being a “watch me” Scout one hour and
a “hear me” Scout the next.
“I lead mostly by example, though I wasn’t afraid to speak around my teammates,” Duggan says. “When I spoke one-on-one with a teammate, it usually was with an arm around his shoulder. I liked to look him in the eye and show him a path to follow.”
Duggan’s road to a bronze medal June 25 at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association state meet in Springfield began with a 7-2 defeat of then-top-ranked Gaetano Console of Saint Viator in a sectional final in Naperville on June 18.

The 6-foot-1 Duggan—blessed with speed and sound technical skills—went 4-1 at the state tourney, falling 5-4 to eventual champion Abe Wojoikiewicz (26-1) of Civic Memorial High School in a semifinal before besting Console again in the match for third place.
The last Scout to medal at state was Regis Durbin, who captured the IHSA’s Class 3A championship at 195 pounds in 2014.
“The way Bennett wrestled, it was like art,” says LFHS senior-to-be Charlie Heydorn, Duggan’s wrestling partner and longtime friend. “He knows what to do from every position on a mat. Such a good, all-around wrestler. The guy is also smart and willing to help anyone out. Ask anyone who knows Bennett to talk about Bennett, and you’ll hear, ‘Great guy,’ guaranteed.
“Great friend to me and a great wrestler,” Heydorn continues. “Every day in practice was fun for me, because he pushed me and made me a better wrestler. Bennett’s high energy in the wrestling room was constant.”
Duggan’s legacy, as an LFHS student-athlete? Wall-worthy. The LFHS Boosters group picked Duggan—also a Cum Laude Society member—as one of its Wall of Excellence honorees in the 2020-2021 academic year, for having demonstrated excellence through athletic performance, leadership, spirit, and sportsmanship at LFHS.
The son of former multi-sport athlete Jim and Laura—a pair of Hoffman Estates High School graduates—Duggan remembers setting up mats, as a third grader, in the basement at home and learning wrestling basics from his father, who wrestled and played football and baseball in high school.
“An excellent role model, the perfect role model,” Duggan says of his father, an attorney. “He has motivated me since he showed me the ropes in the sport I’d grow to love for so many years. The way my dad lives life, it’s inspiring. I admire the way he works, the way he carries himself, even the way he does chores around the house.
“I hope to emulate him.”

As students prepare for a return to the classroom, parents can ready them for success.Young students happily return to the classroom.
FALL 2021: It is the post-lockdown season that students, teachers, and parents have all been looking forward to for many months.
Back-to-school rituals are part of what make each fall so much fun, but a seemingly endless list of tasks needs to be accomplished before the first day begins. After the uncertainty everyone has experienced this year, all feelings of anticipation and excitement seem to be more heightened. Easing into the new school year with a plan in place will create a calm atmosphere at home—and in the classroom.
“It feels so good to start the school year with an organized home” says Stephanie Klein, owner of Happinest Organizing. “I feel like if you can do things in August to get yourself prepared, it allows for a much smoother transition.”
She emphasizes that with any organizing project, the first step is to declutter. It doesn’t make sense to start organizing without this important first step.
Dressers and closets should be tackled first. Take out the items that no longer fit—or that the kids no longer like or are willing to wear. “This makes for a much smoother morning routine. You don’t want it to feel like a fire drill,” Klein says.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230510182943-8630735c43f5da22d982a10701359272/v1/8e7eb9dfcfa5eaead599096aeb6638ed.jpeg)
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230510182943-8630735c43f5da22d982a10701359272/v1/cff1c71a5a906c6bce260cb9ed9f09e2.jpeg)
Klein is also a big fan of the checklist. “One important step in the morning routine is having a checklist in the area where they grab their backpacks to make sure that they have ev-
erything. If they are grabbing backpacks and heading out the door, it’s helpful to look at the checklist, make sure they’ve put in their homework folder and whatever it is that they need that day—maybe it’s an instrument. It totally depends on the age.”
The other important spot to declutter is the workspace. “After a year of home schooling, it’s important to declutter papers and other items laying around. Starting the school year with a fresh, organized area creates a calm, clean, and efficient work environment.”
Top of mind is also our children’s health, making certain they are caught up with necessary doctors’ appointments and vaccinations prior to the first day of school. In addition to routine visits to the pediatrician, it is also the ideal time to check in on your children’s oral health.
Dr. Anokhi Bock and her husband Dr. Derek Bock founded their Forest Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry practice 13 years ago. Dr. Anokhi is the pediatric dentistry specialist and Dr. Derek heads up the orthodontic side of the practice. Patients on the pediatric dentistry side are first seen at 12 months old and often continue through high school. The orthodontics side treats children, teens, and adults.
“It is important to get the children back into a routine,” Dr. Anokhi says. “Maybe they haven’t been as consistent about their oral hygiene during home schooling. Now is an ideal time to reinstate those routines—keep toothbrushes and floss in downstairs bathrooms so kids can brush before school and before bed.”
Both doctors want to remind parents of a couple of important things to keep in mind as school is about to begin: Make sure your children protect their teeth and wear mouth guards while participating in contact sports and remember while packing lunches and stocking the pantry to avoid hard and sticky foods like Starburst, Twizzlers, and crunchy chips—especially for the kids who are wearing braces.
Allison Gurza, former educator and owner of Sage Ex-

plorers in Lake Forest, also recommends thinking about the new school year in August.
“This is probably more important this year than any other year. In August, as a family, you really must start thinking about school again. If your kids had a summer off and they were just doing their sports and hanging out at the pool, it’s the perfect time to start preparing for the academic component.” In fact, there are many Academic Boot Camps available to help kids brush up on skills they will need when school begins.
“Here at the store, we pick up dramatically in August because—all of a sudden—the parents think, ‘Oh my gosh, can we just do twice a week for two weeks before school starts? I need them to brush up on math facts,’ Or, ‘I get their brains working!’” In addition to a full array of educational toys, Sage Explorers also offers private tutoring.
“One of the benefits this year is that parents are heading into the school year knowing their children as learners in a much different way than ever before,” Gurza says. “For example, if your child needs a timer in front of them set for 20 minutes and then he or she needs a break, you now know that. I know fidgets are a thing with all the kids, but does your child need a fidget to focus? Having those things and being ready is important to set them up for success. Is your child a self-starter and can have the study space in the back
room and be fine—or will he or she be highly distracted? Some may need to be at the kitchen table. These are things that parents know and can stay on top of for that for the coming year. That’s going to be a positive.”

Gurza also recommends that as both school and activities rev up, keeping in mind some of the positives experienced during the shut-down. She urges parents to be mindful when looking at afterschool activities and not overscheduling. “Have them focus on one or two things they really love.”

Lake Forest native Kate Hartman Rosenzweig makes her Team USA debut as the new Chief of Communications for the U.S. Olympics and Paralympics.

WHEN KATE Hartman Rosenzweig was growing up in Lake Forest, she never imagined that she might someday be donning Team USA gear. But perhaps she should have, as today she sports the winning title of Chief of Communications for the U.S. Olympics and Paralympics (USOPC).
“You know, no one would ever have called me an athlete,” says Rosenzweig with a laugh. “But I always introduce myself as the seventh of 10 children. I was born on to a team. I understand how they work. So, it makes sense that today I’m on the team behind Team USA.”
In May 2021, Rosenzweig began her new role after a storied career with Coca-Cola in Atlanta. Her roles with Coke took her to the Olympic games in both London and Rio.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230510182943-8630735c43f5da22d982a10701359272/v1/dba247fe90ae4e5293da9bfd211e438d.jpeg)
“Coke offered me a space where I never stopped learning,” she says, having moved to Atlanta from Chicago for the post with her husband and former high school sweetheart, David Rosenzweig. “It taught me so much about our country and different parts of the world. I couldn’t have asked for any
better training ground for the job I have today.”
When the Olympics called to recruit Rosenzweig back in January, she turned them down. “I had just been promoted at Coke and we were still in the thick of the pandemic,” she says, who had been working at home full-time since March 2020. “But a few months later, they called again, and my husband asked me what I was waiting for. He knew how much I loved the Olympics, and this was an opportunity for me to follow a passion and work for an organization that was rooted in purpose.”
But not until Rosenzweig had an open and honest discussion with her soon-to-be boss, Sarah Hirschland—the Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Olympics and Paralympics— did she agree to make the move.
“Covid forced me to think about things differently. I realized that in the last year, I spent the most time I ever have with my family, even more than when my two children [Charlotte, age 9 and JD, age 7] were born,” she says. “That was a tough pill to swallow, but it made me very aware of how I wanted things to be moving forward. If I were to make
a move from Coke, I wanted a healthy balance between work and family and Sarah said she would work with me to make this happen.”
Rosenzweig knew Hirschland was a woman of her word. One of the biggest cultural shifts for the USOPC in recent years under Hirschland’s leadership has been supporting athletes’ entire well-being: not just their physical health but also their mental and emotional health. “The organization has changed the way we look at mental toughness. Our athletes are stronger and better prepared than ever because they’ve put in the work to achieve their truest potential across both physically and mentally.”
Hirschland also oversaw the uniting of the Olympic and Paralympic organizations and their rebranding under one umbrella. “The organization changed its name because its mission is to build an inclusive world through sports,” says Rosenzweig. “Sarah inherently knew you can’t be inclusive if you’re leaving out some of the country’s strongest most inspirational athletes. I knew I was going to work for a true advocate, a real force for good I couldn’t wait to help tell these stories.”
So just three months shy of the 2021 Olympic games beginning in Tokyo, Rosenzweig went to work. Managing a team of 12 who are working remotely across the country, and supporting 47 National Governing Body press offices, most of her days are spent in back-to-back virtual meetings.
“I’m really looking forward to the games getting underway for many reasons, one being it will be the first time our team will get to be together in person,” Rosenzweig says. She will have two stints in Tokyo later this summer—17days for the Olympics and seven days for the Paralympics. “But our first challenge is to get our 600+ athletes to Tokyo safely and healthy.”
According to Rosenzweig, she is responsible for leading the USOPC’s public relations and media relations efforts, including storytelling and stakeholder engagement with athletes, fans, National Governing Bodies (NGBs), team members, and other important partners to increase visibility and support for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic movements. “And while my role is communications based, the organization is values driven – one where we are all responsible to pursue excellence, lead courageously, foster belonging and serve others.”

One of Rosenzweig’s first Olympic memories is watching the Atlanta games as an eighth grader in 1996. “We didn’t watch a ton of TV growing up, so the fact that my mom and dad and my younger siblings were all up late and watching the Olympics together really stands out,” she says. “It was the night Kerri Strug did the vault and landed on one foot—the most amazing thing I ever saw happen and we talked about that as a family for days.”
Rosenzweig is a huge believer that the Olympics has to happen in 2021. She might even go as far to say that the United States needs for it to happen.
“The Olympics is when the world to shows up at its best,” she says. “Team USA is the one entity that all of the United States gets behind and supports—there’s no other unifier like it. Team USA is ready. They are ready to win and they are ready to make this country proud. I am honored and excited to be a part of their journey.”

Jared the GEM
Lake Bluff native and Lake Forest High School graduate JARED ZENNI—already a ninthyear pro at age 25—continues to sparkle in the sport of polo.
words by Bill McLeanATYPICAL SOPHOMORE
in high school crams for geometry tests, begs for a onehour-later curfew, and smiles at a DMV camera for the first time.
Perhaps Jared Zenni, while attending Lake Forest High School, experienced all of the above nine years ago. But he pulled off something unusual, something singular, shortly after blowing out 16 candles on his birthday.
Zenni turned pro—in polo.
A Scouts quarterback and linebacker in football for a couple of seasons, the Lake Bluff native walked away from pigskins for good in order to devote his full attention to riding ponies competitively across spacious fields all over the world.

“I started to really like the sport at the age of 12, maybe 13,” says Zenni, who grew up the length of a few mallets from the Crab Tree Farm polo field. “My father (Jim) played a little polo as an amateur, and I’d follow him to the barn. Polo intrigued me.
“All my friends in high school liked traditional sports.
When I told them my plan one weekend was to play in a polo match, they said, ‘You’re doing what?’ ”
Zenni, a Lake Forest Country Day School alumnus and a 2014 LFHS graduate, chose to do something unusual in college, too, commuting up to three times a week from the University of Miami in Coral Gables to U.S. polo hub Wellington, Florida, to hone his polo game. His round-trip commute lasted three hours. It took him five years to gallop to degrees in finance and marketing, an impressive double considering Zenni spent his college autumns in Argentina, a polo hotbed.
“I’m a horseman, and I like horses—two musts in the sport,” says the 25-year-old Zenni, who, at 6-foot-3, towers over most professional poloists. “There are times when you have to work with your horse early in the morning and again late at night. It’s about riding, getting to know your horse as much as possible, preparing the horse thoroughly during the week before a tournament or a big match.
“They say,” he adds, “that 100 percent of polo is your horse, until you get to the ball. At that point your horse becomes 50 percent of the sport.”
Zenni wasn’t half bad at the 2018 U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington, where he lives. He was stellar, in fact, becoming, at age 22, the youngest MVP ever at the tournament and helping the Daily Racing Form team capture the title. One year later he was on the victorious side of the Westminster Cup, the annual U.S.-England clash.

The Joe Barry Cup? The Ylvisaker Cup?
Zenni runneth—with help from four additional legs—to a title at each.
He’s been battling for the Cessna team (or, in polo parlance, patron) in 2021. The pro, who plays either the “3” (playmaker position) or the “4” (defender), hit the massive pitches—a polo field is 300 yards by 160 yards—for the Cartier Queen’s Cup and Gold Cup in the United Kingdom
earlier this summer.
“Jared is incredibly talented and has worked hard to develop his craft,” says Oak Brook Polo Club (OBPC) Managing Director Daniel O’Leary, who met Zenni through the United States Polo Association (USPA). “With his height and size, he’s able to reach farther and swing harder and hit longer than most others. But you have to be limber to succeed in the sport, as well, and Jared is as flexible as he is because he trains like pro athletes in other sports do.
“It’s not easy to reach over a horse and hit a reverse-back-

hand shot like Jared does,” adds the Wisconsin native and OBPC leader since 2016.
Polo demands athleticism. Its animals reach a speed as swift as 35 mph in matches. Its humans often have to stop their transport on a dime, turn to establish an ideal position to address the ball, and then bludgeon a four-and-a-halfounce plastic ball with a croquet-ish mallet.
“It’s an explosive sport,” Zenni says.
It’s a sport that dates back from 6th century BC to 1st century AD. A game of polo doubled as a training regimen for Persian cavalry units.
Teams in England first played polo in 1869. It debuted in the U.S. seven years later and made its initial appearance in Chicago in 1879. In 1897 polo clubs formed at Evanston Country Club and at Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest; the latter facility hosted private polo matches for 100 years.

Illinois is home to 17 outdoor polo fields, and there are seven USPA clubs (non-private) in the Chicago area. A sizable number of all-star polo players in the 20th century hailed from Illinois.
In 1933 Onwentsia hosted a series of East-West matches that showcased the best players
in the U.S.
“It drew 40,000 spectators,” O’Leary says. “The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff area has a great polo history. Not too long ago I spoke with residents. They remember. They remember how big of a deal polo was along the North Shore.”

Zenni trained extensively at Oak Brook Polo Club in his early years. One of the oldest clubs in the U.S., it was founded by businessman Paul Butler (the Butler in Butler National Golf Club) and opened in 1922. For years it was considered the hub of polo in the U.S.
“Polo in the Chicago area,” Zenni says, “is on its way back. When I was younger there was a decent amount of popularity, before interest in the sport declined a bit, maybe because it fell into the wrong hands. But passionate people like (twins and OBPC instructors) Matias and Tomas Obregon are doing all they can to revitalize polo.
“I sense a resurgence.”

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE
BESPOKE FACELIFT
words by Steven Bloch, M.D.Aging is inevitable. Looking fabulous takes work. From that first gray hair to the lines around the mouth and laxity of skin around the jaw and neck. At some point, we can’t ignore it any longer and either we accept the inevitable or seek the help of a Plastic Surgeon.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230510182943-8630735c43f5da22d982a10701359272/v1/0050446ec67d29178a12152e0667e083.jpeg)
A Bespoke Facelift is a customized procedure to fit the individual’s specific needs. Most patients like whom they are. They just want to look refreshed and “not plastic.”
Every face ages somewhat differently. Factors to be assessed and addressed include 1. Laxity of skin 2. Loss of volume 3. Underlying bone structure 4. Skin texture and wrinkles 5. Position of eyebrows 6. Status of neck, jowls, and buccal fat 8. Appearance of eyes.
All of the above should be considered and addressed. A bespoke facelift does not rely just on the skin. What you do beneath the skin is just as important. This includes muscle tightening and repositioning. Fat reduction or addition. Sometimes cheek or jaw augmentation. The surface of the skin might be lasered or addressed with Plasma Pen to soften wrinkles around the mouth or eyes.

As part of a consultation, all of these concerns are addressed. Costs have to be considered and risk assessed.
I also recognize that not everyone wants to be operated on. As part of the consultation, non-invasive alternatives are discussed. If patients start early, we can truly slow the aging process and put off the time before a facelift is needed.
So if you think the “wax is beginning to melt” maybe you owe it to yourself to have a consultation.

Fenwick Shingle 630.325. 3400A Movie Night UNDER THE STARS
ELLIE NOTTOLI of elliestyled and Mary Hess of Trend Event Rentals collaborated for the first time when hired to create a backyard movie night party. Under the stars, they created a magical experience for guests to lounge and linger, nosh, and imbibe. They sat at Trend’s floor tables surrounded by floor pillows and slingback chairs. elliestyled layered in rugs, poufs, florals and details, alongside the requisite screen and projector. Together, Mary and Ellie set the scene.
Hess and Nottoli met in 2019 as Hess was exploring the idea of starting a new event rentals business. Nottoli was thrilled. Honoring the concept of “community over competition,” she and Hess traded notes and ideas, discovering gaps in the local market. They now often work together to create exquisite events.
Bringing in rental items to an event—no matter how large or small—can change the energy and
transform a space. It assists in storytelling as well as serving a functional need. elliestyled’s rental inventory consists of decorative accessories and embellishments, while Trend Event Rentals provides the backbone boutique furnishings: bars, shelves, tables, and chairs. Trend’s eclectic pieces bring an unexpected twist and level up the charm.
The backyard lounge and movie night experience has been a success for all ages and is easily personalized to meet a variety of needs. Clients are able to embrace their outdoor space and transform it into an unforgettable night under the stars.
