For centuries, Aesop’s Fables artfully integrated lessons of morality and ethics into storytelling. Their timeless messages have since been represented in countless artistic interpretations. In 1922, the stories were used as inspiration for the dramatic sculpture in the arched entryway of Tribune Tower, where they remind all who pass beneath them to be responsible, honest, and fair.

How can we already be talking about fall? If it were up to me, we would have summer year-round, but that would be quite unusual for the Midwest. Our August issue features the perfect stories and pictures to round out your summer.
On our cover, we have a photo of the one of America’s foremost polo families, Oak Brook’s Butler family, at an April 1981 match. This year Oak Brook Polo is back despite the pandemic, but with new precautions and a tailgateonly spectator section. In our cover story, we take a look back at the “sport of kings” and a look forward to the 2020 season. Prepare to ditch those sweatpants and dust off your fascinators and bowties, because polo is certainly not cancelled this year.
You may recognize Tracey Tarantino DiBuono in our Country vs. Town section, from our latest summer edition of Who Wore It Where, When, and Wonderfully, last month. From the early 1900s through the early 1940s, there was another contagious disease outbreak that had parents restricting their children’s exposure to others—particularly during summer months—and brought travel between affected U.S. cities to a halt. There were quarantines and the resulting fear that comes from knowing a single virus could alter your life forever.
That highly infectious disease that ravaged the U.S. was the poliovirus, or polio, but thanks to Jonas Salk’s 1955 vaccine (the first of many, increasingly perfected ones), it was largely eliminated from the Americas by the end of the 20th century. In fact, few people today think of polio as a global health threat at all, regarding it as one of those relics from the past, like the Spanish Flu.
Dr. Kate Vergara of Western Springs is not one of those people.
“Because our polio vaccination program in the U.S. has been so successful, I think that some Americans do not know how devastating it once was here and how important vaccination is to public health—at home and abroad,” says Dr. Vergara, President and CEO of the K8 Global health consultancy who recently produced a documentary film titled Circle of Defense: On the Frontlines of Polio and Ebola
Born in Hinsdale and raised in Western Springs—where she lived most of her life (other than the 10 years she spent studying at New York University and living in the Peruvian Amazon)—Dr. Vergara’s work took on new meaning recently as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to its knees.
“Now more than ever, we need to listen to the public health scientists and base our policies on evidence-based recommendations from the people that dedicate their lives to protecting others,” she says, adding that she has joined the U.S. Medical Reserve Corps to support the COVID-19 response.
Dr. Vergara has also been interviewed on local news programs about the importance of taking social distancing seriously and wearing PPE.
However, most of the time she remains focused on the mission she charted for herself as an epidemiologist nearly 20 years ago— to address infectious diseases in developing countries. Dr. Vergara, who has both a masters degree and a Ph.D. in Public Health, has worked on four continents with some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
“For the last 20 years, I have been working on infectious disease burdens in emerging economy settings. I fell in love with public health in Peru,” she says. “During my Fulbright Scholarship year there in 2003, I studied tuberculosis and intestinal parasites in a remote Amazon village near the border of Peru, Brazil, and Colombia. It was a life-changing experience.”
Five years ago, she began tackling vaccine-preventable diseases in six countries in Africa and also India, primarily focusing on polio eradication. And in 2018, she and Theresa Jarka started
Champion Media Productions to help shine the spotlight on these critical public health and humanitarian causes.
“We are a boutique video and photography production firm dedicated to international humanitarian causes around the globe. We will bring your projects into focus for your organization and supporters,” explains Dr. Vergara, adding that she is honored that their Circle of Defense documentary was selected for three film festivals so far this year.
According to the film synopsis, the developed world is all but polio-free, yet it still lingers in war zones and remote regions of South Africa. It also posits that until polio is eliminated from the globe, the potential for outbreak exists anywhere.
Circle of Defense also looks closely at the community health infrastructure in Nigeria and Sierra Leone, the health workers there, and how they are task-shifting in the case of Ebola and other emergent diseases. “We follow polio and Ebola survivors, community health care workers on the ground, as well as experts from stakeholders around the world, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF and Rotary International,” she explains.
In these unprecedented times, what Dr. Vergara is doing both locally and abroad is a monumental task for any one person. And yet, she manages to try to save the world while also being mother to two boys in Western Springs—ages 14 and 12.
“I wrangle my two beautiful, brilliant sons and love to take them with me on my international work. They have been to Africa a couple of times and also South America,” she says. “Last time we went to Ethiopia, they organized a donation drive at their schools in Western Springs to collect multivitamins and school supplies for orphans in Addis Ababa. I was so incredibly proud of them. We brought over 600 pounds of supplies to the kids.”
In her rare moments of down time, Dr. Vergara balances her life with exercise.
“The best way for me to keep up with my boys and manage stress with demanding work is to be active and work out,” she says. “I started out just jogging a bit, but as the stress increased, so did my distance. At this point, I am a five-time marathon runner, avid triathlete, and Ironman 70.3 athlete. If COVID-19 keeps increasing the stress, I may have to do a full Ironman soon just to keep sane!”
Regarding that particular virus, and the pandemic that grips our planet, Dr. Vergara points to the lessons she has learned from studying other infectious diseases around the globe—and to one of the driving messages of her film.
“While the international health community cannot predict what the next outbreak will be, they can plan for house they will respond. This is legacy planning, and it is our best line of defense in supporting community health workers and preserving the response infrastructure.”

Western Springs resident Dr. Kate Vergara has devoted her career to addressing polio and other infectious diseases in some of the most vulnerable populations in the world. Now, an unprecedented pandemic is requiring epidemiologists like her to share their expertise in the quest to prevent, manage, and treat COVID-19.
Things won’t be exactly the same at Oak Brook Polo Club this summer, but the matches are back with limited tailgate-only spectator seating and rigorous safety protocol in play. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t still put on your hats and get out your champagne to enjoy the “sport of kings.”
It’s known as one of the most elite parties in the world—a “party” that West Suburban polo fans have been enjoying at Oak Book Polo Club since 1922.
There are delightful hats. There are dapper accessories. And always, always, there is champagne flowing as glasses are raised by spectators to cheer on their club in an ancient game known as the “sport of kings.”
That champagne might taste a bit sweeter this year as Oak Brook Polo Club returns with an abbreviated season and special protocol in place to keep spectators safe as they enjoy what has been a beloved summer tradition for nearly a century.
“Polo is a great group activity with family and friends that want to get out of the house, share a few drinks and laughs, and enjoy an afternoon watching the world’s most beautiful and adrenaline-fueled game,” says Oak Brook Polo Club Managing Director Danny O’Leary. “Maybe put those sweatpants and t-shirts away from staying cooped up at home and get dressed up finally for once. I can imagine a lot of people want dust off those suits, sun dresses, and fancy hats and get out.”
The recent pandemic and statewide “shelter in place” order put plans for the 2020 season on pause, leaving O’Leary and his colleagues to come up with an abbreviated schedule that, while different, could keep the sport going and give fans a chance to participate with limited capacity, socially distanced, “tailgate only” viewing.
“Our traditional venue layout with the Saddle Club, Grandstands, Field Side Tents, Reserved Tables, and Lounges do not comply with many of the state’s industry guidelines for health of social distancing. As a result, and to better control our spectators’ behavior and whereabouts, we applied an ‘all-tailgate’ environment where parking spots along the field are spectator-assigned seats with buffer zones between each spot, so groups are socially distant,” explains O’Leary, adding that part of the reason the season was delayed was also to let the polo field “heal” after May floods left standing water.
The fields came alive again in July with the Butler Challenge Cup and the Oak Brook Polo Open and will continue with matches this month and through September 27—culminating with the coveted USPA Butler International Cup.
Guests will be prohibited from leaving their assigned tailgate (unless they need to use the restroom or handwashing/hand sanitizing station) and will be required to wear a mask (PPE) when outside their individual groups. There will be no concessions, bars, merchandise, or sponsor display areas. General parking will not be permitted onsite, nor will shuttle services be offered. Even the legendary pivot stomp is cancelled this year, due to safety concerns and need to adhere to state guidelines.
However, what won’t be “cancelled” is the fun of the party that is polo.
“Depending the on type of tailgate, spots are 12 to 15 feet in length and 20-feet deep. So, guests can bring their own table, chairs, tent, and umbrellas to make themselves comfortable … basically bring their backyard to polo!” says O’Leary. “They may bring their own food and drink as well.”
Founded by local businessman Paul Butler, Oak Brook Polo Club is regarded as one of the oldest polo clubs in the United States. An American Polo treasure, it has served as home to the U.S. Open Polo Championship for 25 straight seasons and other prestigious international and national polo tournaments. For generations, it’s been a popular Sunday tradition and social scene known for entertaining Hollywood celebrities, dignitaries, royalty, and the most distinguished Chicago residents.
“I could not be more thrilled of the return of polo and spectators to Oak Brook,” adds Gopal Lalmalani, Village of Oak Brook President. “The entire state has been growing impatient on the slow return to normalcy. Residents now have a reason to get out of the house and enjoy the summer with family and close friends. I cannot think of a better way to spend a summer afternoon than at an Oak Brook Polo Club match.”
Traditionally known for its Sunday social scene, this year guests will move from reserved tables to reserved tailgating spaces.
The Oak Brook Polo Club’s 2020 season will continue as always on the Prince of Wales Field, which is adjacent to the Butler National Golf Course and The Drake Hotel in Oak Brook. O’Leary says the Club’s all-tailgate plan will be limited to a maximum of 70 to 80 parking spots (or 35 to 40 vehicles per sideline) with spots assigned upon arrival. A maximum of six guests per tailgate are allowed and must arrive in one vehicle upon entry.
While coming up with a plan that would allow polo to continue safely and in full compliance was a challenge, he says everyone at Oak Brook Polo Club is still thrilled that the horses will again thunder across these beloved fields.
“Before the pandemic, we had a stellar season planned with themes and activities at every one of our events. Most of that had to be cancelled or postponed. But on the field, polo remained the same,” says O’Leary. “As a result, this is one of the most competitive polo seasons I’ve seen in the last five seasons since taking over polo. It is truly a thrill to watch and I can’t wait for spectators to see it. This is no croquet on horseback; this is professional polo to the likes of watching the Cubs or Bears. Our players are in it to win it!”
Oak Brook Polo’s remaining 2020 summer schedule includes the following matches with pending special events:
• August 2: Cecil Smith Cup
• August 16: Chicago Polo Open
• August 30: Illinois Players Cup
• S eptember 13: USPA NYTS National Championships
• S eptember 20: Drake Challenge Cup
• S eptember 27: USPA Butler International Cup

Medical care has come a long way in the past 50 years. Our parents or grandparents would go to a family doctor that would handle most issues ranging from pediatric care, delivering a baby, and caring for the elderly. Obviously, those days are ancient history.
With the vast development of medical technology and advent of thousands of medications, almost all medical care is subspecialized. For example, if you have a complex skin issue, you go see a dermatologist and not the primary care physician.
While caring for our seniors, I have realized that utilizing the appropriate specialist in conjunction with our primary care/geriatric service, helps with outcomes, improves quality of life, and longevity. When a senior has a chronic cardiac issue like atrial fibrillation or congestive heart failure, we work closely with the cardiologist to help reduce exacerbations, lower emergency room visits, and hospitalizations. We work hard to coordinate the specialists’ recommendations in the outpatient setting to maintain great continuity of care. Again, this helps improve outcomes, reduces health care utilization and expenses, but most importantly, keeps our patients healthier.
The difficulty sometimes is getting the patient to their special-
ist’s outpatient office. It puts a burden on family members, like sons and daughters, to take time off from their work or day, to get a family member to the appointment.
After hearing this feedback from senior community staff, patients, and families, we decided to create a specialty program within the practice. Now we are able to bring the specialist to the patient, in the senior communities.
Many patients are already comfortable with their current outside specialist, so we encourage that relationship to continue. The idea is not to take a specialists’ patient away from them, but to bridge the gap when patients can’t make it to appointments. Then communicating back with the patients’ longstanding specialist to help with care coordination and again improving outcomes.
The five specialties we are planning include cardiology, pulmonary, nephrology, neurology, and urology. Testing or procedures would still have to be performed at outside facilities such as hospitals, surgery centers, or specialists’ offices. With a structured health plan and consistent visits by the primary care and now specialty teams, I am excited to see what a difference we can make in our patients’ health and their families’ lives.
Hansa Medical Groupe has offices at 5250 Old Orchard Road, Suite 300, in Skokie, and in Chicago, 847-920-0902, hansamedicalgroupe.com. Cedar Rooong Company, LLCMISTIE PSALEDAS LUCHT grew up in New Hampshire before studying communications and art at Boston College. After graduating, she transitioned into the workforce, spending much of her career working for Fortune 500 companies in promotion marketing. Soon, Lucht’s focus turned to her three children—Lillian (13), Eleanor (11), and Adeline (8)—as she became a stay-at-home mom, entrepreneur, and volunteer. Lucht has served as the PTO President at Monroe School, a committee chair with the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC), and her favorite volunteer position—Ambassador Chair and Special Events Director of the Hinsdale Humane Society. Lucht’s love of animals has brought three pets into her home—Sampson, a 130-pound Great Pyrenees; and two cats, Einstein and Wally. If you don’t know Lucht from her volunteer work, then maybe you’ve seen her in the gym. “At the age of 40, I was certified as a Personal Trainer and a group fitness instructor, with additional certifications in Boxing, TRX, and Youth Exercise Fitness, and started my own training business Fit Force,” says Lucht. When COVID-19 hit, Lucht was furloughed but still hopeful. The creative mom decided it was finally time to start the business she had been thinking about for five years—Wiggle Tooth Fairy Registry. When Lucht isn’t cheering on her children or working out, she enjoys painting, writing, and exploring hidden treasures in Hinsdale with her family. Here are a few of the busy volunteer’s favorite lasts:
EDITED BY KEMMIE RYAN ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKOLAST GREAT IDEA?
Wiggle Tooth Fairy Registry, an idea I had five years ago. I needed a solution for when my kiddos lost their teeth and created this allin-one kit. It takes the worry and stress away.
LAST SONG THAT PUMPED YOU UP TO WORK OUT?
As a trainer I have so many, but my recent favorite is “You Can’t Stop Me” by Andy Mineo.
LAST COMMUNITY EVENT YOU PARTICIPATED IN?
I attended the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club Benefit in February and had the honor of being an emcee alongside Mike Wiggins at last year’s Hinsdale Humane Society Pet Walk—one of my alltime favorite events.
LAST INSPIRING READ?
Atomic Habits by James Clear.
LAST FAMILY CELEBRATION THAT YOU’LL CHERISH FOR A LONG TIME?
My birthday in March. It was right after quarantine started so my plans changed drastically. My girls and I painted rocks and left them along a path at Waterfall Glen. Then, they did my hair and makeup, decorated the dining room, and we had a dance party. It was a great way to ring in 44!
