1. SAFER TO USE
Dull knives are more dangerous than sharp ones because they require more force to cut, increasing the risk of slipping and injury.
2. EFFICIENCY AND LESS EFFORT
Sharp knives cut faster and more precisely reducing prep time in the kitchen, and glides through food with ease, saving your hands and wrists from unnecessary strain.
3. IMPROVED FLAVOR
Precise cuts preserve the integrity of ingredients, like herbs and vegetables, preventing bruising and bitterness.
4. PRESERVES TOOLS
Regular sharpening extends the life of your knives by preventing uneven wear and tear.
5. VERSATILE PERFORMANCE
A sharp knife can handle a wider range of tasks, from slicing delicate tomatoes to cutting through tougher meats and produce.
Regular sharpening is a simple way to elevate your cooking experience and ensure safety in the kitchen.
As we step into 2025, the Barrington real estate market is demonstrating remarkable resilience and growth, signaling a promising year ahead for buyers, sellers, and investors alike. Following a period of economic adjustments and fluctuating interest rates, the market is now experiencing increased activity, bolstered by strong demand and stabilizing mortgage rates and low inventory.
Market Trends and Buyer Demand One of the most notable trends this year is the sustained demand for residential properties, particularly in highly sought-after Barrington neighborhoods. Homebuyers, eager to secure properties before any potential rate hikes, are driving sales volumes higher. Millennials and Gen Z buyers, many of whom have delayed homeownership due to past economic uncertainties, are now entering the market with renewed confidence.
Additionally, Barrington’s diverse housing options—from luxurious estates to charming single-family homes—continue to attract a broad spectrum of buyers. The increase in remote and hybrid work arrangements has also fueled demand in the area, where buyers seek more space and access to nature while maintaining a convenient commute to Chicago.
Stabilizing Mortgage Rates After experiencing volatility in recent years, mortgage rates have shown signs of stabilization. Financial analysts predict that interest rates will remain steady or experience slight declines, further encouraging homeownership. This stability is particularly beneficial for first-time buyers, who were previously hesitant due to high borrowing costs.
Sellers Seeing Competitive Offers With strong buyer interest combines with low inventory, sellers in Barrington are benefiting from a competitive market. Well-priced homes are receiving multiple offers, and properties in prime locations are selling quickly. While pricing remains a key factor, homes that are move-in ready and properly staged continue to command top dollar.
Looking Ahead As 2025 progresses, the Barrington real estate market is expected to maintain its momentum. Whether you’re a buyer looking for your dream home, a seller eager to maximize your property’s value, or an investor seeking new opportunities, the current market conditions present a wealth of possibilities.
If you’re considering buying or selling in Barrington, now is an excellent time to take advantage of the strong start to the year. Partnering with an experienced real estate professional can help navigate the dynamic market and ensure a successful transaction.

Business Excellence Award: Patrick A. Finn Custom Homes & Remodeling
Recognizing businesses committed to outstanding craftsmanship, this award went to Patrick A. Finn Custom Homes & Remodeling. Originally from Ireland, Patrick Finn built his business from a small remodeling operation in 1991 into an award-winning company specializing in custom homes and renovations. His work has earned multiple Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards, highlighting excellence in design, architecture, and remodeling.
Innovator of the Year: Parker Players
Honoring those who challenge the status quo, this award was presented to Parker Players, a theater company that has elevated Barrington’s performing arts scene. Once a small group of enthusiasts, Parker Players now attracts top-tier talent from Chicagoland and is fundraising to build a black box theater-inthe-round in Barrington’s center, further cementing the town as a regional arts destination.
“These recipients make Barrington a thriving place to live, work, and grow,” said BACC Board Chair Dr. Reinhold Llerena. The Chamber congratulates the honorees for their dedication, innovation, and impact in shaping Barrington’s future.

WORDS BY DR. JAMES T. GAVRILOS
the dentist has all of the information, the patient’s teeth are scanned and emailed to the laboratory for the next step.
Dental technicians had to use impressions of teeth when making the blueprint for a new smile. They used wax that they added to the models of the teeth and then carved the wax into the shape of what the new teeth should look like. This was called a “wax-up.” Today we use a digital scan of the teeth and the blueprint is created digitally. The technician can merge the new design into photographs of the patient so that we can see if our cosmetic goals are being met. Once the dentist approves the digital blueprint, the technician digitally prints models and guides for the dentist to use while he is preparing the teeth for their new cosmetic restorations.
osmetic and restorative dentistry is like many other fields. It requires planning and execution with a talented team that can perform their individual responsibilities. One of the members of this team is the laboratory technician that helps create the blueprint for a new smile.
When creating a new smile for a patient, the dentist listens to the patient’s concerns and reviews expectations with them. They will sit together and look at close-up photographs of the “before” smile and list all the changes that need to be made. This includes length, width, color, shape, translucency, position, and gum relationships. The patient is encouraged to bring photographs of smiles they like so we can use it as a communication tool. Once
This process is such an advantage for the patient. When they visit for their preparation appointment, they leave with temporary restorations that look exactly like the blueprint. They get an entire week to smile with them, eat with them and speak with them. At their one week follow up visit, we ask if there are any changes they would like to make. In most cases, the answer is no but if they wish to make a change in length or shape, we can make those changes in the temporary restorations. Once the patient approves, we scan the temporary restorations and send it to the lab so that they know exactly how to make the final porcelain restorations. This way there are no surprises and the patient ends up with the smile of their dreams.

The “Sandwich Generation” phenomenon resonates with many, as about 25 percent of Americans—40 percent of them women and mothers—experience it firsthand. Coined in the 1980s, it reflects challenges of longer life expectancy and later family-building. Relatable among those in their 40s and 50s, people feel torn between caring for both their own children and their aging parents. At the core is a responsibility to balance daily decisions regarding the well-being of loved ones on either side. Many of today’s parents struggle with the stress of providing basic needs and emotional well-being for their children while being pulled to assist in decision making regarding living situations, declining health, or end-of-life care for their parents. Strain is amplified as both generations seek independence yet rely on the same person for support.
The emotional resilience required to juggle busy schedules and competing priorities can wear thin. Those in the sandwich generation often trade their own well-being to meet the needs of those they love. Let’s be honest, how are we really dealing? Sure, people can outsource services such as house cleaning, lawn care, and dog walking. Others find convenience in grocery delivery and meal prep services. Still, help with these
everyday tasks does not ease the emotional and physical demands of assisting with the health care of aging parents and growing children. Hiring caregivers is not always an option, or enough. Obligations among the sandwich generation are increasing and here to stay.
As mothers and daughters, the personal physician consultants at Doctor Daughters understand such challenges—we have supported our own loved ones through them. As doctors, we see how confusing and isolating the health care system can be for families. Studies show 24 percent of people do not fully understand the information shared during doctor visits, and 31 percent forget it immediately thereafter. While adult children often want to be there for aging parents, it is not always possible to attend appointments or keep track of changing medications. Aging individuals may hesitate to be open with their families about their medical needs, a failing memory, or fear they impose a burden. This void in communication only makes it harder for adult children, leading to feelings of guilt. That is precisely where Doctor Daughters comes in. We serve as the bridge between you, your aging parents, and their doctors—helping clarify diagnoses, reinforce care plans, and streamline communication with other family members and health care teams. We handle tough conversations and answer hard questions that naturally come
along with changes in life and health. While aging parents seek to maintain their independence, young adults are trying it on for themselves. Some are about to leave home for the first time or study abroad, while others may still be at home or have returned. Regardless, this fragile age group still needs support and guidance from trusted adults. Parents face being available for help while remaining respectful of their child’s evolving independence. Like their grandparents, these young adults are not always transparent about their health care needs. Parents often worry whether their child will reach out during a medical emergency or know how to advocate for themselves during sensitive situations. We created Campus Consult to offer parents peace of mind while giving their children the independence they desire. With this service, direct access to a physician is a phone call away whenever prompt, expert guidance is needed.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for families feeling the squeeze. Sometimes it’s about taking one day at a time. The personal physician consultants at Doctor Daughters are here to offer a listening ear, expert guidance, and respite along the way.

Since 1958, Mariani Landscape has been transforming outdoor spaces with the finest outdoor residential and commercial landscape services.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MARIANI LANDSCAPE
If you look out your front or back windows and are unsatisfied with the view, the team at Mariani Landscape has a solution. For more than 65 years, the landscape design, construction and maintenance company has been revamping outdoor spaces for home and business owners in the Chicago area and beyond.
The professionals at Mariani can design, build, and create a plan for homeowners to maintain beautiful outdoor landscapes on their properties. They take great care in working closely with clients to devise a design plan that meets clients’ needs and fits their tastes, deploys the Mariani construction expertise to build it, and then devises a workable maintenance plan in which the Mariani team or homeowners (or both) keep the space in tip top shape.
“We train our team, and we have done this successfully for many years, to really be like a concierge type of service for the client,” says Nate Birch, Vice President of Client Services for Mariani, and also a Barrington resident. “Our clientele are people who are busy, working, and have a lot of things going on, yet they want a beautiful, well-manicured landscape and they don’t want to have to think about it.”
The ultimate goal and what Mariani brings to the table, Birch says, is “management of the property that allows clients to sit
back and ultimately just to enjoy it.”
Mariani’s team includes a network of professionals that allows it to be a one-stop shop for any aspect of home. A tribute to their concierge-style service that makes the experience seamless.
“It’s from the ground up. Someone might build a new home, and we become part of the planning process for the site and get in even before the ground breaks,” he says. “We carry that through maintenance of the property. Gathered around a table before the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northwest Suburbs (BGCNWS) “Youth of the Year” awards, board members Tom Roeser and Amy Wickstrom, and board president Susan Harkin are feeling celebratory. Three years after launching a $12 million campaign to fund a new youth Impact Center that will bridge needs in Carpentersville and Barrington, 70 percent of the funding has been pledged, permittable plans are ready, and programming is taking shape. There is still a lot of work the nonprofit has to do to have everything
ready for the projected launch of the center by year’s end 2025, says Karen Kay, BGCNWS’ chief advancement officer: “We are incredibly excited to be opening a center that will enhance a sense of belonging and opportunity for teens and middle schoolers from both Barrington and Carpentersville—a place where they can explore the many ways they can shape their futures. The possibilities are endless.”
The new Impact Center will be located at the site of District 220’s former Woodland Elementary School near the border of Barrington Hills in Carpentersville. This puts it within walking distance for graduates from the Sunny Hill Elementary school who previously could not participate in the BGCNWS middle-school programming.
In addition to closing that gap, and to offering the afterschool and athletic programming that BGCNWS provides at 12 schools, the new center will give youth the opportunity to explore interests through state-of-the-art lab programs. Among them, there is the BuildLab, where kids can explore working with tools and machinery for everything from woodworking to bike repair. STEM programming will also happen here. The CreateLab is equipped for artistic explorations with painting, drawing, 3-D printing, laser printing, and more. The CulinaryLab, outfitted with a professional kitchen, is where kids will not only learn basic cooking and recipe testing, but also good health/life skills. The TechLab will teach technology skills such as coding and computer literacy and will give kids the chance to participate in a new e-sports program. Everything in each lab is being built with flexibility, so that physical elements are modular and moveable.
“Our Impact Center labs provide Club members the opportunity to explore areas of interest and develop skills critical to success in work and life,” explains Harkin, President of the Board of Directors and former superintendent of School District 300. “Whether they are learning how to solder a circuit in our BuildLab, designing and coding an app in our TechLab or trying a new recipe with friends in our CulinaryLab, our kids are building self-confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills while receiving mentorship support along the way.”
Like the Club’s first Impact Center (adjacent to the Dundee-Crown high school campus in a section of the Perry Elementary school), the new center will focus on career exploration, and will feature job readiness and mentoring programs to equip youth with soft skills needed for job success. But with double the space of the first Impact Center, and a dedicated gymnasium, the new 40,000-square foot center will have the room to serve not just high schoolers
and middle schoolers but will also act as a community center for adult and family events. That includes supports for Club families including counseling, ESL classes, and parenting classes.
Barrington resident Roeser, Chairman of Otto Engineering, which is Carpentersville’s main employer, has been a part of BGCNWS since its inception 28 years ago, and is a big believer—both in what the Club does for youth self-worth and purpose, but also, for the skills exploration it offers. “College is one path to a successful career, and we are proud that many Boys & Girls Club kids do take that path,” says Roeser. “But there are other routes to gainful employment. Careers such as tool and die, CNC machining, HVAC mechanics, or automotive specialists, for example. These are all skilled occupations that do not require a four-year college degree but do require an apprentice program.” With schools no longer offering vocational study programs to ready kids
“...our kids are building selfconfidence, teamwork and problemsolving skills...”
for apprenticeships like this, the labs and mentorship programs at the new Impact Center are designed to fill that gap.
Wickstrom, owner of Barrington’s Wickstrom Auto Group, is equally supportive. “The teen years are notoriously awkward for everyone, and BGCNWS has done so much to create safe place for all youth, giving them room to explore, find their passions, and to feel grounded in who they are,” she says.
“So much goes into ensuring that kids have everything they need to get to the next steps of success in life and career,” Wickstrom continues. “The challenges families face in that journey are huge—especially if kids feel that they don’t ‘fit in’ or families don’t have time to find programs that are available to help them. That’s true for kids in both Barrington and Carpentersville, and BGCNWS is finding ways to bridge all of these gaps, so that as kids navigate high school, there is a sense of belonging they take with them.”
Like Roeser, Wickstrom has been especially impressed with how BGCNWS partners with stakeholders (school districts, park districts, local businesses, and community members) to maximize resources. Part of a 20-person taskforce organized to ensure the new center programming meets community needs, Wickstrom is excited at the prospect of stakeholder collaborations that will lead to more training for youth, intern positions, and jobs for BGCNWS kids at businesses in both in Barrington and Carpentersville.
“The new Center will include program partnerships with local businesses, career experts, and our community colleges,” adds Roeser, “to provide career exploration opportunities in the areas of healthcare, EV Technology, auto and aviation mechanics, construction, public safety, and technology industries.”
As well, the new Center will provide educational and academic support, plus a lot of focus on needed soft skills, says Harkin, this includes character and leadership development, as well as help with health, finance, and life skills. “In public education, there are so many requirements around what must be taught. We have more latitude at BGCNWS,” says Harkin. “Here we can teach the soft skills that are so crucial to young people. With those, plus all of these labs that give kids the chance to explore and find interests they are passionate about, kids are able to show up with confidence as their authentic selves. Combine that with the support we have from our communities and business leaders to place kids in jobs and you see why this public/private partnership is a model for how communities and nonprofits can work together with great results.”
For those who did not have the opportunity to participate in BGCNWS’s February fundraising event there is still time to contribute. “We are actively seeking support, both for the capital fund, and skill-based contributions,” says Kay. “We need monetary donations, but we are also looking for volunteers to help us shape the programming. That can mean anything from mentoring— someone who is a retired shop worker for example, or wants to teach computer coding, automotive, or culinary skills, to those who want to do a one-off seminar or art project. We welcome it all.”

It’s no coincidence that Barrington Youth & Family Services (BYFS) moved its offices to Applebee Street in the center of town.
“When it was clear we needed more space, we chose a 107-year-old Victorian home to house our offices,” says BYFS executive director Betsy Wintringer. “We created a therapeutic setting that disarms people and makes them feel at home and at ease right away. We want to have a positive impact and be a positive experience so that people will know to turn to counseling when they, or a loved one, is in trouble.” BYFS was originally created in 1972 as Barrington Youth Services to fulfill a need identified by community leaders. Over the years, its programs and services have evolved as the community has developed and the world has presented new challenges. The organization changed its name to Barrington Youth & Family Services in 2005 to reflect its growth.
Today, BYFS is a community-based, nonprofit social service agency. Its goal is to build healthier families by providing counseling and preventative programming to children, teens, couples, and families. Their approach focuses on supporting the social, psychological, and emotional well-being of the Barrington community. BYFS offers a variety of Latino services that are led by Spanish-speaking staff. Programming specifically designed for the Latino community is available to all families.
“It’s our goal to destigmatize counseling and make it as easy as possible to get help,” Wintringer says. “We won’t turn anyone away, even if they are underinsured or uninsured. We’re doing our best to work creatively with the community so that anyone who needs help gets it. Accessibility is key. Our goal is to help 50 more families this year than we did last year.”
The BYFS Auxiliary Board is critical to the success of the organization’s efforts, raising more than 50 percent of BYFS’ operating costs at its annual gala. This year’s fundraiser, “A Night in Old Hollywood,” will be held on Saturday, April 12 at the Chateau Biltmore. Meghan Van Daele and Katie Gavula are co-chairing this event.
“Moody opulence is the vibe we’re going for at this year’s gala,” says Van Daele. “We have lots of fun little surprises, including a special little speakeasy lounge that you can visit with a small donation. This lounge will have a local celebrity mixologist that we’re very excited about. We’ll also have a fabulous band, specialty cocktails, champagne tower, and some really cool photo ops when you arrive. We’re so looking forward to transforming the Biltmore back to the golden days of Hollywood.”
“People will show up, dress the part, and have a great time,” adds Gavula. “This event touches such a diverse group who support this cause. It’s always so interesting to see how people interpret the theme. It’s a magical night, one to be proud of, where the community rallies around mental health. A perception is that Barrington doesn’t have needs that require a nonprofit like BYFS. But when you see how many people BYFS touches, it’s really something.”
In 2024, BYFS served 325 families, clocking more than 4,000 direct hours of counseling—that is actual time spent counseling patients. They also awarded about $140,000 in financial assistance to cover counseling.
“Last October was our busiest month in my tenure with BYFS,” Wintringer says. “You don’t want to see that because it means that people are hurting, but it also means that people are proactively reaching out when they need help. There is a definite shift in how people are thinking about mental health.”
“People will show up, dress the part, and have a great time...”
The board credits part of this shift to the student ambassadors they have working on behalf of BYFS in the high schools. They help the board have a pulse on the issues students are facing, as well as administering wellness tools peer-to-peer.
“One thing I think about is how many in our community don’t think about BYFS until someone in their family needs their services,” Gavula says. “But it’s such a great thing that BYFS is here and available when they need it.”
As a part-time executive director, Wintringer is beyond grateful to the auxiliary board for their support of the mission at BYFS.
“The attitude and selflessness of our volunteers is so incredible,” Wintringer says. “They’re mostly working moms who are also efficient, thoughtful, and so giving to our cause. Because of our board and the funds that they raise at the gala, we can continue to be a resource that our community can count on.”

Created over a century ago, the Sidecar is perhaps the world’s most popular cognac cocktail— and understandably so. Elegant cognac is shaken with freshly squeezed lemon juice and orange liqueur, resulting in cozy, tart-sweetdry perfection. The sugared rim is optional but strongly recommended as it lends a touch of balanced sweetness to each sip.

For nearly two decades, the LoBue family has welcomed you to their table for lunch every weekday and dinner daily.
Ilove strawberries. I eat them out of hand, make pies and jams with them, macerate them, even grill and pepper them. So, imagine my delight at finding myself knee-deep in Pete Ambrose’s organic strawberry patch on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, where he’s been harvesting the luscious berries
since January. Together we worked our way up a few rows, quietly chatting and plucking until I had plenty to take home. This sweet, many-splendored cake is nice way to feature strawberries for your dearest. It’s actually a vintage blitz torte recipe, made extra special by the berries and whipped cream topper.
MAKES 1, DEEP-DISH 9-INCH PIE INGREDIENTS
FOR THE BLITZ TORTE
• 1 cup cake flour
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
• 1 1/4 cups sugar
• 4 eggs, separated
• 2 tsp Nielsen-Massey vanilla bean paste (substitute vanilla extract if need be)
• 3 Tbsp whole milk
FOR THE VANILLA PASTRY CREAM
• 3 Tbsp cake flour
• 1/3 cup sugar
• 1/8 tsp salt
• 1 cup whole milk
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1 tsp Nielsen-Massey vanilla bean paste (substitute vanilla extract if need be)
• 1/2 stick butter
FOR THE STABILIZED WHIPPED CREAM
• 1 tsp unflavored gelatin
• 1 sheet silver strength gelatin
• 6 tsp cold water
• 2 cups heavy cream
• 1/4 cup superfine sugar
FOR THE STRAWBERRY TOPPER
• 4 cups, hulled and sliced right before service
MAKE CAKE Sift cake flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside. In bowl of a stand mixer, whip butter and 1/2 cup of the sugar until fluffy. Add the four egg yolks and vanilla paste and beat at medium speed until incorporated. Add milk and beat again. Add sifted dry ingredients and mix just until no streaks show. Grease two 9-inch baking pans and insert rounds of parchment paper in the bottoms. Spread cake batter (it will be stiff) into the pans. Set aside. In bowl of stand mixer, whip egg whites until foamy; gradually add the remaining 3/4 cups of sugar, and continue to whip until stiff and glossy. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Set rack in the center of the oven. Spread meringue over the unbaked cake batter in the pans. Place pans on oven rack and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. While cake layers bake, make whipped cream and pastry cream.
MAKE PASTRY CREAM In a double boiler over boiling water, combine flour, sugar, salt, milk, and beaten egg and whisk until thick. Stir in vanilla paste and butter. Remove pastry cream
to a bowl and press plastic wrap over surface of pastry cream to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate.
MAKE STABILIZED WHIPPED CREAM Chill mixer bowl and whisk attachment. Cut gelatin sheet and place with gelatin powder over cold water. Allow to stand until thick. In a small pan over low heat, melt gelatin, stirring constantly. Remove to a bowl and let stand. Remove 1/4 cup of the cream to a separate bowl. In chilled bowl of stand mixer, whip remaining 1-3/4 cups cream with superfine sugar until soft peaks form. Stir the reserved 1/4 cup of cream into the warm liquid gelatin and immediately pour into the soft-peaked whipped cream; continue whipping until cream is whipped firm.
ASSEMBLE CAKE When ready to serve, place one layer of cake on serving platter, spread with pastry cream, and top with remaining cake layer. Top with most of the whipped cream. Arrange sliced fresh strawberries on top of cloud of cream. Serve remaining cream and any extra strawberries with slices of the cake.
a bustling capital city and a quiet jungle full of gentle giants.
WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN
Thailand, located in the center of mainland Southeast Asia, boasts a variety of landscapes including bustling metropolises and dense jungles. Even after visiting three times, I remain captivated by the vibrancy of its capital city, Bangkok, and the beauty of its jungles.
During a recent expedition with my daughter, our journey began in Bangkok—a cosmopolitan hub of 9 million on the banks of the Chao Phraya River (translated as “River of Kings”). Bangkok’s history spans over two centuries but its fairly recent evolution from a humble riverside trading village into Southeast Asia’s most dynamic and colorful capital is truly remarkable.
Here ancient traditions seamlessly intertwine with the 21st century. Intricately carved temples scattered throughout the city are illuminated by a sun that reflects almost blindingly from sleek skyscrapers. In the busy streets, thousands of motorbikes flow in rhythmic waves. Every turn reveals makeshift shrines and colorful tuk-tuks—three-wheel motorized taxis—whose drivers promise riders a great fortune at the ride’s end.
We chose Anantara Siam Bangkok for our short stay. Stepping out of the Anantara car, we crossed a body of water peppered with lily pads and entered immense glass doors opened by staff dressed in
chut thai (traditional Thai garb). Once in the lobby, the city’s commotion disappeared. Hundreds of orchids perfumed the air with an intoxicatingly refreshing scent, and hand-painted silk ceilings and an immense mural made entirely of hand-woven Thai silk added color to the gleaming white space. After check-in, we were led to our room via an open-air courtyard filled with greenery and anchored by a koi pond. The sumptuous, colorful accommodations were exactly what this weary traveler had hoped for; the rich fabrics enveloping the suite felt like a warm embrace.
After the lengthy day of travel, the spa was an itinerary must. We chose the Anantara Signature Massage, which stimulates circulation and deeply relaxes muscles—the perfect remedy for jet lag.
Fully restored after our treatment, we dined at Biscotti, a Michelin Guide-listed Italian restaurant on the hotel’s ground floor. Mesmerized by the chefs in the open kitchen, we devoured Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, Focaccia Mascarpone, and Pappardelle Bolognese, topping off the feast with a creamy Tiramisu. Perfection.
Before exploring the city the next morning, we started with a hearty breakfast at the open-air Parichart Court. We decided between an array of Indian stews, Asian noodle dishes, yogurts, cold cuts, egg stations … the options were endless and delicious.
Bangkok was once crisscrossed by thousands of klongs or canals and was known as the “Venice of the East.” Although many klongs were filled in over time, the city still boasts more than 1,500. So, a tour of the klongs and the River of Kings was a sightseeing must. Departing from our hotel’s sister property, Anantara Riverside Bangkok, we joined our guru or guide, Diamond, on a wooden longtail boat eager to glimpse the floating markets and flower-laden boats.
We cruised along Klong Dao Kanong past traditional wooden canal homes perched—many precariously—over the river, offering a glimpse into local life. We disembarked at Wat Ratchaorot—a gorgeous temple built during the Ayutthaya period boasting Thai-Chinese architecture with intricate carvings and a giant reclining
Back in the boat, we traveled down Klong Bang Luang, a canal once lined with aristocratic residences. Once again on land, we participated in the Thai custom of feeding catfish for luck. Hundreds of fish slithered over each other competing for the brightly colored pellets. We visited The Artist’s House, made famous by TikTok videos, where we created a traditional Thai mask. While crafting our treasures, we were treated to a traditional Thai puppet show incorporating ancient myths and legends.
For lunch, our guide led us down a tiny street to a “restaurant” consisting of one table next to a stove. Our Pad Thai and sweetened Thai tea were delicious—we could hardly believe it was made in such a tiny, streetside kitchen.
Sated, we boarded our boat en route to Wat Paknam Phasi. Deep in the network of canals in the oldest part of the city sits a 187-foot (the height of a 20-story building) Buddha clad in gleaming bronze that looms over the Klong Dan waterway. Be sure to get a photo from your boat—we have a great picture of the two of us with Buddha’s face peering over our shoulders. A walk through the beautiful
gardens and waterfalls led us into the temple where we admired a gorgeous neon-painted dome and a 26-foot glass stupa (Sanskrit for “heap”), called the “Cosmic Stupa.”
Returning to the resort, we passed The Grand Palace and Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn)—two of the city’s iconic sights. Bidding farewell to our guru, we headed to dinner and a captivating Thai cultural performance on the banks of the river. Khon—the art of Thai dance—incorporates graceful hand gestures, colorful costumes, and quite a bit of fire breathing. It was thrilling.
Our exhilarating day ended as we watched nightfall transform the city into a sea of lights with neon signs illuminating the night markets and rooftop bars.
Bangkok boasts contrasts and surprises that captivate and enchant. If you can, allow at least two to three full days as there is so much to see! The Grand Palace is a must and to experience it all will take several hours.
We left the big city for Chaing Rai to begin exploring the enchanting world of elephants at Asia’s premier elephant camp— Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort.
Nestled in the lush, rolling hills of northern Thailand, the camp is a sanctuary of tranquility and beauty. The area where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet on the banks of the Mekong River is known as the Golden Triangle. The hotel sits perched high
on a hillside, offering unparalleled views of Laos’ majestic mountains, Myanmar’s winding riversides, Thailand’s verdant plains, and the Mekong River.
After check-in, we followed a walkway cut through the jungle to our suite, which boasted two terraces, a living room, sleeping quarters, and an enormous bathroom equipped with a retractable wall for the bather craving a breathtaking vista.
Visible from our suite was our dinner destination—a “nest” elaborately woven from “twigs” in a towering tree. The chef guided us up a path toward the resort’s shrines where we set intentions before entering the nest for our treetop dining experience. Once seated, the nest ascended via a motorized apparatus to the treetop. While the view from our room was breathtaking, we now had a panoramic bird’s eye view of the three countries, the rivers, and darling elephants enjoying an evening stroll with their mahouts or caretakers.
Our elaborate “Gourmet Odessey” dinner picnic featured a “savory expedition” that included delicacies like local burrata with sliced prosciutto, arugula, and olive oil, bruschetta with sweet basil and kalamata olives, and seared king scallops in gazpacho and mint chili oil topped with sliced white truffle. The “sweet venture” portion of the picnic included a rose and pumpkin mousse with sour cream, a coconut crème brûlée, and kaffir lime financier with local vanilla and passion fruit compote. We dined like queens. As the sun slipped below the horizon, our nest gently descended concluding our arboreal adventure. This experience was just one of the extraordinary and unforgettable moments offered at this unique retreat.
Early the next morning, we eagerly arose for our elephant adventures. Clad in denim mahout gear, we hopped in a jeep and headed down the drive to the camp. The resort is world famous for its elephant camp established in 2003 along with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation to help elephants in need. Following a 1989 logging ban, thousands of mahouts were left without work and were forced to beg alongside their elephants on the streets. To date, more than 60 el-
ephants have been rescued. Today, 20 of these elephants, accompanied by their entire mahout families, live in the resort’s jungle.
In a picturesque thatch-roofed “kitchen,” my daughter and I prepared medicinal food for two of the resort’s older elephants. Our ingredients were neatly arranged in gleaming steel bowls: rice; tamarind (for aiding digestion); pellets; bananas; salt; and grain. Over the next 20 minutes, we worked to combine the ingredients into delicate balls. Once complete, we handfed Boon Rod and Ja Thong who devoured every morsel. After the meal, it was time for their bath. To keep cool, elephants like to toss dirt on their backs and heads—it was now time to shower them head to toe. We had such fun perching on our tip toes as we tried to reach the top of these towering creatures who loved being bathed.
Once the elephants were clean, Boon Rod filled her trunk with water to playfully shower us.
Following this adventure, we embarked on the Jungle Bubble Experience—another bucket list escapade! An elaborate ironwork buggy carried us from the resort into the jungle where we found elephants grazing in front of three gigantic transparent “bubbles” perched on a raised wooden deck peppered with several conversation vignettes and a plunge pool. The bubbles housed two bedrooms and a lounge. Two concealed bubbles provided privacy for the bathrooms.
Our attentive butler served us a four-course dinner as our pachyderm pals munched on piles of bamboo. Rustling leaves and the melodious calls of exotic birds provided an ambient soundtrack, and a dazzling tapestry of stars emerged, inviting us for a post-meal dip in the
plunge pool. That night, we slumbered under this canopy of stars surrounded by our wise and gentle companions.
The next morning, as the sun rose, our elephant friends trumpeted a welcome to another glorious day. We were greeted by the buggy driver who whisked us off to join the resident veterinarian, three elephants, and their mahouts on their daily walk. We meandered together through the sprawling forest as the vet regaled us with tales of elephant behavior and biology and watched as the gentle giants splashed in the Mekong River. Their playful splashes created rainbows in the sunlight, melting our hearts. We adored the interaction between Bo and Chok Petch (the resident baby). Bo is not Chok Petch’s biological mother, but she has taken on a maternal role with the slightly naughty youngster.
Before saying our goodbyes, we shared berries with our leathery-skinned friends who never turned down a treat.
To feed our bodies, we visited Sala Mae Nam where we feasted on traditional northern Thai cuisine. The restaurant is located at the heart of the resort and its expansive terrace welcomes the most beautiful views. A favorite dish was the Chef’s Khao Soi Gai, a delicious
northern-style yellow noodle coconut curry with chicken. When not frolicking with elephants, our preferred pastime was lying in the poolside cabanas that overlooked the infinity pool. The pool was surrounded by pines, palms, and flowering trees gently swaying in the breeze while butterflies floated from flower to flower. You mustn’t leave the camp without visiting the spa. We began our treatment while seated on floating beds overlooking the jungle. Piano and flute melodies hung in the air as our masseuse gently washed our feet in a rose-scented bath. The massage incorporated my favorite technique—warm herbal compresses. After the treatment, we enjoyed a dip in our private plunge pool overlooking the Golden Triangle—relaxation at its finest. With heavy hearts we bid farewell to our 15,000 lbs. playmates, knowing that all great things must come to an end. Until next time!
This Thai itinerary is ideal for travelers who seek the brilliance of city lights, unforgettable encounters with nature, and the incomparable luxury of Anantara resorts.

Divorce is a very personal and emotional process that often involves children. However, anyone with an internet connection can access most divorce court documents. Additionally, divorce court often takes place on Zoom and is broadcast on YouTube where anyone can log on and watch.
It is concerning that children can go online to read the details of their parents’ divorce, or that a nosy neighbor could pull up another family’s divorce paperwork on their phone.
There is simply no reason the details of any divorce need to be public. Even the most contentious divorces can be handled without going to court. Better options are available if both parties agree they want to keep their divorce private. Alternative dispute resolution processes like mediation, arbitration, and collaborative divorce are very effective ways to accomplish this goal in the most efficient manner possible.

WORDS BY JANIS MVK PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP
For more than four decades, Rugport has been a trusted name in fine handmade rugs, offering timeless pieces that bring warmth and style to homes across Illinois, Michigan, and beyond.
Established in 1979 by Ali and Houshi, Rugport now operates in three locations including Palatine, Illinois, and Petoskey and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Ali and Houshi have a deep understanding of what makes a home special. They recognize that a home is a place of comfort, where individuals feel most relaxed and at ease. This appreciation is reflected in every piece their showrooms offer, with a commitment to providing décor that is both respected and cherished. Rugport believes that the floor is much more than a place to rest one’s feet. It’s a blank canvas just waiting for beautiful décor.
However, Rugport is more than just a destination for exquisite rugs. The Palatine location offers a comprehensive range of services, including expert cleaning, restoration, and repairs—even for the most challenging projects. Additional offerings include customizations to ensure each rug complements any home’s style, alterations to refresh older rugs, professional stain removal, and top-tier appraisals. Rugport also serves as a trusted resource for rug education, assisting first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike at every step of the buying or restoration process.
With over 60,000 square feet of space and an inventory valued at more than $20 million, Rugport offers pieces to suit any home. Whether the style leans toward fashionably avant-garde,
aligns with current trends, or reflects a transitional aesthetic, the selection is designed to meet a variety of needs. Specializing in hand-knotted modern, contemporary, antique, masterpiece, and traditional oriental rugs, Rugport provides stunning options for any room.
Striving to ensure that every client leaves one of the three showrooms confident, Rugport ensures their clients are in good hands. The team is committed to going the extra mile in customer service and takes pride in educating clients on the purpose, style, and functionality that rugs bring to a home.
Rugs are not just floor coverings or places to wipe off shoes during the cold winters—they are the center point of any room. Just like the homes people live in, they hold memories. They are placed at the center where families gather around the dining room table each night after routine days of work and school. They are set in living rooms or dens while groups of friends have game nights or catch up after time away. They provide comfort when we climb the staircase at the end of a long day, warm our feet after an unwinding shower, and guide us through hallways during the night.
Rugport knows this. With this intention, they ensure each client leaves their showrooms with not just a new rug, but a piece that will hold their memories for years to come.

Lake Forest siblings James and Katie Gildersleeve launched the nonprofit “Treats for Troops” in 2018. Their cousins Charlie and John Fleming of Barrington pilot the organization’s mission now.

The philanthropy baton is in good hands with siblings Charlie and John Fleming.
Their cousins James and Katie Gildersleeve of Lake Forest handed it to them earlier this year.
“Our cousins built an amazing foundation, and we are excited to continue the mission while adding new ideas and our personal touch to connect local families with solders overseas,” Charlie Fleming, a Barrington High School freshman, says of co-chairing the nonprofit “Treats for Troops” with her brother John, a seventh-grader at Station Middle School in Barrington.
The Gildersleeves started it six years ago. James is a senior at the University of Georgia; Katie is a sophomore at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
“We’re carrying on a legacy of support for our deployed troops,” Charlie continues. “We believe in the power of personal connection, especially during those holidays when being away from loved ones must be the toughest time of the year for them.
“We believe ‘Treats for Troops’ has the potential to inspire others to get involved and show their love and support for our military heroes.”
The “Treats for Troops” transition from the Gildersleeves to the Flemings began in New Jersey this past summer, when Charlie and John discussed it in a living room with their aunt Catherine.
The eager rookies’ first event, held at the Starbucks in Highwood on November 3, was a smash hit. The grandchildren of men who served in the U.S. Army, Charlie and John Fleming assembled 2,500 care packages—each containing a sweet treat, a pair of Bombas socks (donated by Bombas), and handwritten messages on cards—in about two hours amid coffee drinkers on a Sunday morning.
The Fleming sibs combined to pen heartfelt messages on approximately 100 cards.
The packages wound up in the hands of smiling Navy, Army, Air Force, and Marines personnel all over the world.
“We couldn’t believe how many Starbucks patrons took the time to write thank you notes to troops,” Charlie, still stunned and grateful, says nearly a month later. “One of them wrote, ‘Thank you for risking your life so we can have a safe life.’”
“I saw customers draw wreaths on cards,” John says. “I saw a smiley face on another card. One thanked a soldier for protecting his city. A small thing like a card can make a big impact on those who receive them.”
The ever-popular Mikey Baird, a barista at the Highwood Starbucks near Fort Sheridan and an annual threat to win the “Friendliest Human in Western Civilization” accolade, helped the Flemings
from there, serving as a point man for “Treats for Troops” after the event.
Baird’s military contacts handled the shipping end of the sweet philanthropic enterprise.
But the Gildersleeves’ successors didn’t roll their sleeves down after putting a bow on the Highwood event. They had more work and brainstorming to do. They happily looked forward to carving out more time in their busy days to organize similar events ahead of Valentine’s Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day.
“We want to show troops that we’re thinking about them year-round, not just during the holidays,” Charlie says, adding she and her brother would deploy a “Treats for Troops” spin-off—“A Colorful Christmas”—at various spaces in schools on three dates in December, collecting donated coloring books and crayons for children of military personnel stationed abroad.
Charlie Fleming was born on Christmas Day. Some of her most meaningful birthday cards have come from John.
But you’ll never find any of them in a store.
“My brother is such a great artist,” Charlie says. “He makes birthday cards for me; they’re the greatest gifts because they’re always thoughtful and creative. John knows what I like and spends a lot of time drawing those things on cards.
“I always look forward to receiving John’s cards on my birthday.”
Charlie plays softball (pitcher/first base) and volleyball, volunteers for Barrington Area Council On Aging (BACOA) and serves as a small group leader for youngsters at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington. John plays baseball (pitcher/catcher/ third base) and basketball (power forward) and already appears to believe that giving back off the fields of play beats hitting a walk-off homer or draining a clutch three-pointer at the buzzer.
“Our parents are brilliant and passionate about life,” Charlie says of Mike and Jennifer Fleming, who are also parents of 8-year-old son Sam, a second-grader. “Mom and Dad are born leaders. Mom is active at church, and Dad, through his work, is introducing some amazing learning tools to colleges all over the country.”
Neighbors of the Flemings needed to have their trees pruned one day but were unable to do so. Mr. and Mrs. Fleming gladly took care of the removal and asked for exactly nothing in return.
Charlie and John witnessed the good deed.
“Our parents,” John says, “do things for others all the time.”
“Both say, ‘Putting time into doing something for others is much more important and meaningful than giving money.”
