hat’s why it’s no surprise to me that the suburban real estate market --- and the Barrington Area market in particular --- is thriving right now. The change in closed sales for detached single-family homes, compared to a year ago July 2019, to July 2020, are up 93.1%. However, the median sale prices for these comparative months are down 5.8% and the inventory of homes for sale at month-end is down 38.8%. Houses are moving if priced correctly, thus making it a great time to list your home.

he autumn air often reminds us of things from the past in a similar way. Looking backward brings peace ... we know what the past looks like and it’s easier to manage what we’ve already seen.

esidential real estate evokes a similar emotion within us because it is so personal. We spend --- more than ever before --- the most amount of time in our homes. We raise our families there, make memories, celebrate and, yes, even grieve.

In a culture that continually moves faster with each passing year, our homes provide us with a peaceful sanctuary and a place to slow down.

ill life ever return to normal? Or will there be a different normal? What about the “the olden days” in real estate, before there was an internet, when we used to sit waiting for the biweekly issue of the MLS listings to be delivered to our office?

We would gather together and go through each page of the listings and tell each other about the status of each house. “I sold this one last Friday in a triple offer situation!”

eople are being drawn to a simpler time and there is something incredibly timeless about our community. I find comfort in that.

Ginny would shout out. “That one’s basement flooded, so it’s off the market for a while, I heard.” This was our “internet.”

The only way a buyer would even know about a house would be if they were told about it by their agent, unless we put a sign in the ground.

Growing up in Santa Monica, California I spent many an afternoon reading magazine after magazine and dreaming of one day working in the publishing world. Dreams come true, and I cannot wait for you to dive into these pages. My hope is you will be inspired, entertained, and visually delighted.

First up, we share with you a conversation with the Barrington Junior Women’s Club’s co-chairs around their upcoming fall fashion show. We also sat down with Gil Gibori of The Tutoring House, who is charting a course to give parents and children much-needed help during this challenging time.

Our conversation with Wendy Herb is sure to make you smile. Growing up in a small town on the shores of South Australia, Herb never dreamed of raising her family in the rolling hills of Barrington. But that is exactly what happened. Now, as co-chair of the Rush Woman’s Board fall benefit, Herb shares her story with Country.

They make a big statement when paired back to a girlish trapeze dress. The other important story was head to toe black; there was a parade of all black looks coming from brands such as Balenciaga and Victoria Beckham. The key is to mix in a variety of textures, from leather and suede, to knitwear and wool.”

LA: “A touch of gold jewelry is essential to even the most casual outfits, and one of Moda’s favorite new discoveries is Leda Madera. The art deco inspired collection is perfect for adding a bit of glamour to simple looks, like a white tee and denim.”

David Buckley, Jr. and Linda Fine, co-founders of Buckley Fine Law, bring decades of experience helping clients to their new firm in Barrington.

C

lients that seek out Buckley Fine’s assistance for their estate planning needs don’t just get legal advice; they get attorneys with strong backgrounds in economics and accounting.

The Barrington-based firm, which launched on September 1 of this year after an amicable split from a predecessor firm, offers a breadth of legal services that would otherwise only be found at larger law offices in downtown Chicago.

Both Buckley and Fine grew up in the Barrington area and, after studying in financial fields during college, decided to study law.

Twenty years later, they’ve joined forces to continue to assist clients with their estate planning, corporate, litigation, and real estate needs.

“While I was working as a CPA, I went to law school at night at Loyola. After graduating I went to work for a large firm in the city in their estate planning group,” Buckley says. “It was great because I got to work on the sort of things that excited me previously but working at a big firm in the Sears Tower just didn’t afford a close enough connection to clients. It wasn’t personal.”

This interest in providing a personal touch for clients — often providing legal services to multi-generational families, is what motivated Buckley and Fine to open their new firm.

“We wanted to gather a team of folks that continues to focus on providing services to our long-term and future clients,” Buckley says.

“Our vision was to create a firm with like-minded people that has a service-oriented model for our clients.”

Clients that seek out Buckley Fine’s assistance for their estate planning needs do not just get legal advice; they get attorneys with strong backgrounds in economics and accounting.

The financial backgrounds of both Buckley and Fine come in handy as they work and communicate with clients’ accountants and financial advisors.

“A lot of the estate planning work we do has income-tax components, therefore, having a strong accounting background and having worked as a CPA enables us to be better teammates with our clients’ advisors,” says Buckley.

The diversity of services the new firm offers—from estate planning to litigation to business succession planning, allows it to be something of a one-stop shop for clients who have multiple needs.

“Since our firm includes different practice areas and our attorneys work so well together as a team, we are able to provide well-rounded solutions for our clients. We can address different aspects of their needs in a way that makes it easy for them,” Fine says. “For example, if a family comes to us for help with running or creating a business, we can also add value by addressing the succession of the business, whether through estate planning or preparing for a sale in the future to an outside party. We’re not just focused on one small area of the law.”

It is this client-focused service, along with being based in the community where many of its clients already live and work, that gives Buckley Fine an edge over other firms.

“We like the technical part of our work and the client follow-up.

We want to work with clients over a couple of generations,” says Buckley. “You build a relationship with Mom and Dad and help them with the company and then represent the next generation as they become owners.”

“A number of our attorneys live in Barrington and the surrounding area and are involved in the community,” says Fine. “Most of us have been practicing together for 10 years. While our firm is new, the attorneys are experienced, love working with their clients and are eager to see what 2021 and beyond has in store!”

Why accreditation matters when choosing a cosmetic dentist.

hink about the ways we select a dentist. Some will ask a friend or neighbor. Others will go online and check reviews. Some will even respond to advertising that comes in the mail. But even with all of these methods, we cannot be sure how good their work is. This is where accreditation comes in.

Imagine that your dentist’s work could be evaluated by the top dentists in the world. They would have to submit their work for evaluation and it would have to pass the highest of quality standards. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has a program that performs this exact type of screening.

For 35 years, the AACD has offered this credentialing program. Accreditation serves to set the standard for excellence in cosmetic dentistry.

Achieving accredited status from the AACD requires dedication to continuing education, careful adherence to the protocol, and a resolve to produce exceptional dentistry. Over the past 35 years, thousands of dentists have attempted to complete the process but only 400 have been able to meet the standard. Of these 400, only 200 in the world still practice dentistry today.

The process begins with a written examination. If the candidate passes the written part, they can then start the clinical portion. This involves completing five different reconstructive procedures that are pre-determined by the association. Each case is photographed under high magnification

and also requires a written report. Once the documentation is complete, the case is submitted for evaluation.

After the clinical portions are passed, a final oral examination is conducted along with a review of all the clinical photography and reporting. Only after passing all of these steps does the dentist receive his accredited status.

When you are ready to look for a new dentist, let AACD help you. Go to aacd. com and select the “Find a Dentist” tab. You will be asked to enter your location and you will be given a list of the dentists in your area. Keep in mind that less than 1 percent of the world’s dentists are accredited so you may have to travel to get to one. This first step will be a lot more reliable in getting the quality work that you need than asking a neighbor, going through online reviews or responding to a coupon.

M

eeting Wendy Herb is to be immediately drawn to her warmth and cheeky humor.

Petite and spirited, her vivacious energy bubbles over and fills the room. Raised in a small town on the coast of Australia, two and half hours away from the big city of Adelaide, Wendy’s hometown was a tight-knit community to grow up in.

Being so rural, Wendy and her classmates would spend their school holidays in Adelaide working jobs to gain experience outside of their small town and in the corporate world. One such school holiday found Wendy in Adelaide working at The Coca-Cola Company. “I loved it,” remembers Wendy. So much so, that years later she changed her mind about attending business school

and instead accepted an offer from Coca-Cola to apply for a position with them, resulting in her accepting an employment opportunity with the company. Unknown to Wendy, in the middle of America in Illinois, a young gentleman was also starting his career at Coca-Cola.

Tom Herb, raised in Barrington from 14 years of age, went to Adelaide, Australia for Coca-Cola’s training program and “stole her heart” when he met Wendy.

After a year of dating, he persuaded her to come to America for a visit.

Embarking on a whirlwind tour of the states with Tom, Wendy then returned home to Australia and “packed her life up.” Taking her second airplane trip at 23 years old “off she went” to start a new life with Tom in America. Six months later, Wendy and Tom were engaged. Starting their married life in the city of Chicago, by the time they had two small children, Tom, remembering with nostalgia his time in Barrington, suggested the young couple put down roots in Barrington to raise their family. The open spaces of Barrington appealed to Wendy’s outdoor nature.

These days Wendy rides with her daughter, Jessica, at Barrington’s Deerwood Farm, reveling in the closeness the shared equine sport brings the two. Wendy and her girlfriends even started an outdoor women’s group called “Sole Sisters” where each year for the past six years they pick a locale and go backpacking for three to four days, carrying their own food, water, tents and more. Past trips include hiking the “Grand Tetons, Half Dome in Yosemite and Washington State,” says Wendy.

Greatly involved in the Boy Scouts’ adventures of their three sons and leading many of their outdoor trips, Wendy, recognizing how impactful the outdoors have always been on her own self, also noticed many girls leaving the Girls Scouts after 5th grade. In an effort to stem this, she and her husband, Tom, started a group for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls to explore and stay connected to the outdoors. The group, the Junior Explorers, was started under the Boy Scouts of America Explorer Umbrella.

“You can make such a difference in a girl’s life at that young age, when they are still willing to put themselves out there,” shares Wendy. She and her husband worked tirelessly to secure grants to purchase a trailer to house tents, supplies and stoves to use to take the Junior Explorers camping.

Taking on another adventure, in 2012, Wendy—impressed with what she had seen of Rush University Medical Center first-hand from family patient care— joined the Rush Woman’s Board. The Woman’s Board works with hospital leadership to determine how best to JWC | COUNTRY 41

support the hospital with the funds raised from events and appeals.

“I was blown away seeing how much Rush does for its community around them,” shares Wendy. Rush “goes into the community to help people who need a little bit of a lift up in their lives. Reaching a lot of schools and providing healthcare to children, touching their lives very early on,” explains Wendy.

The Woman’s Board’s Principal Project for 2020 is The Woman’s Board Transformation Fund for the Rush University Cancer Center. The Transformation Fund focuses on the patient care aspect of the Rush Cancer Center and will have a huge impact on processes and procedures for the Cancer Center as it moves into the new Joan and Paul Rubschlager Building in 2022.

This year, Wendy is co-chair of the fall benefit, which raises funds for Rush University Medical Center’s education, research, and community engagement programs, including the Transformation Fund. The event was originally planned to be at the Theater on the Lake, following the blueprints of 2019 when the event was also held there. “There were no surprises there,” says Wendy, until there was in March. “So many events were being cancelled, and right now everyone needs hospitals and healthcare. Our Board made a commitment to Rush to help fundraise,” Wendy explains. Noting a need for healthcare now more than ever, the women forged ahead charting a new path for the fall fundraiser. Pivoting quickly, the co-chairs changed tracks to begin to plan a virtual benefit.

“We are trying to bring a little bit of unity” to our

community, states Wendy, who along with her co-chairs, decided on the theme “Destination Excellence” for the now virtual wine tasting benefit. “Rush is an excellent destination,” effuses Wendy, “for those in need of the best care and treatment.”

Taking place on October 2, 2020 the event will now be broadcast via YouTube Live with ticket holders receiving a private link before the event. Woman’s Board staff members are working with Rush’s technology department to produce the event, truly a new definition of mission control. A week before the event, Board members will deliver wine and gift bags to ticket holders. Playing jazz favorites before and after the wine tasting to provide atmosphere for the event will be the Patrick Donley Quartet. Leading the wine tasting, will be Todd Hess and Veronica Hastings of H2Vino, an importer and distributor of fine wines from around the world. Hess and Hastings will guide guests through three wines: a Grand Cru Champagne, a top-ranked California Chardonnay, and a historic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Rush Woman’s Board is a place where “you are surrounded by women that are so talented, and everyone helps each other,” shares Wendy. Much like the small 300-person town, Corny Point, Wendy grew up in in South Australia. Tending to her three beehives in her backyard, Wendy pauses to bottle the honey, which she “gives out to share sweetness in the world.” Like the bees, Wendy is truly a remarkable force of nature herself.

T

here are certain things that never go out of style. For the members of the Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC), that would include caring, compassion, and generosity. For more than 20 years, the first Saturday in November has always meant that it was time for the BJWC’s annual Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon.

This must-attend event typically draws more than 400 women and is highly anticipated for months ahead of time. The organization frequently raises well over $100,000, which they generously distribute to social service agencies throughout Barrington and the surrounding communities.

So when co-chairs Melissa Khamkhounnavong and Amber Wirkus started brainstorming about how they were going to have the event and achieve their fundraising goals amidst a global pandemic, they knew they had to start thinking outside of the box.

Together with their committee, they were able to come up with a creative concept that may indeed rival an in-person event.

The theme for this year’s virtual program is “The Secret Garden” and will take place on November 7. “We’ve come up with an amazing slogan,” says Wirkus, “‘See How We Flourish.’”

“Just like a garden has to be nurtured and encourages growth, so does our community. The needs of our community don’t stop for a pandemic; if anything, they are amplified, which is why this year we are focusing on our local businesses.”

thropy and community service in Barrington and the surrounding communities. This year in particular, the committee is well aware that these are challenging times for everyone, so they’ve reached out to local businesses and asked them, what can we do for you?

Rather than coming together in one space with hundreds of women, they envision the event playing out across the community in little watch parties. “We encourage everyone to go in to our local shops and pick out an outfit and dress up for the event,” Khamkhounnavong said.

Instead of the usual gift bags, beautiful boxes filled with special items, including a personal-sized bottle of prosecco will be given out. They have hired local production team, Delack Media Group, and invested in a platform that will allow all of the attendees to view the fashion show as well as participate in a live auction via an app.

Everyone will know ahead of time how to log on and they will also be streaming live on Facebook. In addition to the live auction, they will also have a special “key” event, where instead of a raffle ticket, participants can buy a skeleton-like key. The lucky winner of the raffle will be surprised at her home with a live camera crew, so everyone can enjoy the moment when the name is announced.

Indeed, it does all sound like the next best thing to being there.

Khamkhounnavong and Wirkus have not missed a beat as the event will include the live portion with a fashion show and auction (via streaming platform), some surprise elements and a few traditional favorites. They’ve also gotten innovative and included some COVID-19-friendly, yet highly desirable, auction items, including having the outside of your home professionally decorated for Christmas or a family photo shoot.

Tickets will be available individually or as a “table” of ten. If attendees choose to go the latter route, they will receive flowers, catered food and wine delivered to their home.

By working with local vendors and restaurants, the BJWC is supporting local businesses while trying to raise money for the important causes they support.

And with the money they do raise, they will be able to provide support to charities from their well-established Grant Program serving human service needs for senior citizens, women and children. In addition, they award college scholarships based on merit and service for six Barrington High School seniors.

Both Khamkhounnavong and Wirkus have been involved with BJWC for about three years. “I grew up in Barrington,” Wirkus said. “And I’ve looked up to all of these women. I just wanted to do more.”

As an adoptive mom through foster care, Khamkhounnavong has been involved with the “Let It Be Us” organization, a foster care agency that is one of the BJWC’s grant recipients. While busy with her career and raising a young family, she still felt a strong desire “to help people in my community and make a difference.”

Although they were forced to change things up, both Khamkhounnavong and Wirkus are very excited for this year’s event and expect a strong turnout. “We want to encourage people who grew up here or have ties here to be engaged since they will be able to via the virtual platform,” Wirkus said. With all of the planning the whole committee is undertaking it is sure to be a true, as well as a virtual, success.

This Viet Cajun shrimp and sausage boil adds a powerful punch to fall dining.

W

hen my mom grew up in Houston, Texas, excursions to Galveston, where my grandfather owned land, were a beach-filled regularity. Grandfather loved fishing, and my mom loved seafood. Especially shrimp. Those days, shrimp boats were manned by a tough lot of Texans, with some Cajuns mixed in. But by the time my Mom and Dad bought Neil Armstrong’s old house in the shrimping village of Seabrook on Galveston Bay, the shrimping community had broadened to include a large group of Vietnamese immigrants. Mom—a spicy food lover—was thrilled to discover the fusion cuisine that resulted: Viet Cajun. While the marriage of these two on the plate may seem unusual, both cultures share colonial French roots, which gives them a natural affinity. Best Viet Cajun dishes take familiar Cajun fare and ramp it up to include Vietnamese spices and seasonings such as lemongrass, ginger, and fish sauce. This shrimp and sausage boil is a classic example.

INGREDIENTS Stock: • 8 cups water • 3 stalks lemongrass (halved) • 2 heads garlic (each cut in half ) • 1 large knob of ginger (about 4 inches long) • 1/4 cup fish sauce • 1/2 cup Old Bay seasoning • 1 .80-ounce container Cajun seasoning blend • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • 2 pounds tiny red potatoes • 2 pounds smoked sausage, cut on the bias in chunks • 4 pounds fresh Gulf shrimp (with heads and tails intact) • 3 ears of corn (each cut into three pieces) Spicy garlic butter sauce: • 1 cup (two sticks) butter • 1 large head garlic, peeled, trimmed, and minced to make 1/2 cup • 1 stalk of lemongrass, smashed and minced to make 2 tablespoons • 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper • Salt and freshly cracked pepper Garnish: • 1 small bunch of green onions, green portion cut into two-inch pieces • 1 small bunch cilantro leaves • 2 Thai peppers chopped (optional) • 3 fresh limes

METHOD In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter with minced garlic and lemongrass. Stir in cayenne, salt, and pepper. Continue heating and stirring until butter foams up and lemongrass and garlic are cooked tender.

Make stock in a large, heavy-bottomed soup kettle, over medium heat, combine water with lemongrass, garlic, ginger, fish sauce, Cajun seasoning, and Old Bay. Heat to boiling; lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add potatoes and sausage. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Scoop sausage and potatoes out of kettle and set aside, keeping warm.

Add shrimp and corn to simmering stock. Cover pot and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until shrimp are bright pink and corn is tender. Scoop shrimp and corn out of kettle and set aside.

In a very large bowl, toss shrimp, corn, potatoes, and sausage with a few spoons of the garlic butter. Pile everything on a serving tray. Sprinkle with the two-inch slivers of green onion and the cilantro sprigs. Add a sprinkle of sliced Thai peppers if you want it extra hot. Serve with more of the spicy garlic butter and wedges of fresh lime.

G

eriatric depression is when normal feelings of sadness and occasional feeling “blue” persist. Research suggests various causes of depression in the elderly, including low levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, strong family history of depression, medical illnesses, and/or traumatic life events. In the elderly population, medical illnesses are a common trigger for depression.

Some of these include cancer, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, stroke, and various dementias.

Symptoms of depression include sadness, feelings of worthlessness, irritability, fatigue, crying spells, apathy, restlessness, lack of concentration, withdrawal, sleep problems, changes in appetite, thoughts of suicide, and physical aches and pains. Often otherwise unexplained symptoms could be from undiagnosed and/or untreated depression.

One important sign of depression with seniors is when they withdraw from their regular social activities. Rather than explaining their symptoms as a medical illness, often depressed seniors will give different explanations such as: “It’s too much trouble,” “I don’t feel well enough,” or “I don’t have the energy.”

There are various treatment options to treat depression. This includes therapy, biofeedback, medications, and procedures like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). For seniors, medications are the most common type of treatment. Medications include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors

(SSRIs), selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), bupropion, and mirtazapine.

A frequent reason some seniors do not respond to antidepressant treatment is because they don’t take the medication properly. Sometimes the elderly get confused and miss doses or take more than the prescribed amount of the medication which can compromise the effectiveness of the antidepressant.

Usually, antidepressant medication is taken for at least six months to a year. Typically, it takes four to 12 weeks to begin seeing results. Stopping the medication too soon often results in a relapse of depression. In fact, most patients who stop taking their medication before four to six months after recovery will experience a relapse.

Families interacting with their elderly loved ones can give vital information to healthcare providers about their mood and behavior.

THE HOUSE TUTORING LOUNGE: THE NEXT EVOLUTION IN AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING Gil Gibori of The House Tutoring Lounge is redefining the education landscape.

he childhood of today at face value appears vastly different than the childhood of yore.

Saturated with myriad activities under the so-called helicopter generation of parenting, 70 percent of teenagers identify school related issues—homework, grades, and getting into college—as their greatest stressors by far, according to a recent study by NYU and Columbia University. Gil Gibori, founder and CEO of The House Tutoring Lounge, created the space in Glencoe alongside his wife, Carrie, with the intention of it being an oasis for children.

The House serves as a place for children to step outside of their high pressure lives where multiple priorities constantly compete for their attention.

When The House opened in December 2018, they found clients coming from Barrington, and other communities, seeking assistance with schoolwork. Designed with an atmosphere conducive to learning, it is a space to socialize, be with friends in a no-pressure environment, and an added boon is that on-demand help with tutors is there at the push of a button.

As one Barrington resident, Jason S., shares about his two children’s experiences as members of The House, “all of a sudden my children are fascinated to learn, explore and spend their time in the lounge challenging each other … the experience has made my kids so much more comfortable in school.”

“I’ve been in tutoring for 25 years,” shares Gibori, “and I recognized early on that the ingredient to a successful tutor/child relationship is connection.” Building upon this, Gibori’s education team looks for key connections and interests before placing a child with a specific tutor. “Does this child identify with a surfer? Guitarist? An athlete?” asks Gibori.

A high priority for Gibori is atmosphere and community. “Much like the wildly popular Soho House model, we curate a community through what we offer.” Similar to Apple’s Genius Bar help desk, The House’s app allows for on-demand help to be as close as the

click of a button. “Sometimes all a student needs is a quick 10-minute call on one math problem,” says Gibori. “We help them at the time they need the help, not at a prescheduled hour.”

In spring 2020, during shelter in place, The House offered a new service—coaches to check in on students remotely a few times a day, answering any questions about schoolwork, and ensuring their work was getting done. Reporting back each day to the parents to let them know how the child’s academic day went.

Another popular tutoring model new to the scene since COVID-19 is the much-talked about “pod.” Taking various forms, at its core, The House POD is a curated mini-classroom consisting of a group of students chosen by their parents across a spectrum where they can socialize and learn together. For K-5 students, The House’s PODs are mini-elementary school classrooms in the students’ homes. “For teenagers, the pod is like the TA break-out session that does a deepdive on the professor’s lectures,” explains Gibori. “Our mission is to make the child better at what they are learning within the teacher’s construct.”

The tutors all at minimum have a master’s degree, many have PhDs and JDs and content mastery is their specialty. While once only offering tutoring for grades 6th to 12th, The House has expanded to now include Kindergarten through 5th grade.

A second location is on track to open in Highland Park, and capital is currently being raised to take The House nationwide. As a solution for parents and to support families, The House offers varying levels of service, from a la carte, to homework help, one-on-one tutoring sessions, to a curated pod. “Parents are running a marathon right now with taking on teaching responsibilities,” explains Gibori, “they can choose to stop for a drink of water if they want. That is what we are here for, to help alleviate the stress.”
