Editor’s Note

They call these the “dog days of summer.” And yet, August can be one of the most wonderful months of the year. While it’s nearly time for back to school, there is also a sense of appreciating every last moment of summer we have left to savor.

Molly Harper of Lake Bluff, who is on our cover this month, can certainly relate. This busy mom to three teenagers (Jackson, Reese, and Brady) keeps up with all that she has on her plate through mindfulness, organization, and power yoga. Turn to The Portrait to find out more about this fitness guru and all the things that keep her motivated.

One of the main features in this issue, Toast of the Town, celebrates one of Lake Forest’s legendary “it couples,” interior designer Lori Lennon and her husband (also an accomplished professional) Don Lynch. You may have seen them at a recent gala or sitting at the bar of one of their favorite restaurants with a gaggle of friends. This uber-social duo shares the story of how they met and fell in love with each other—and then Lake Forest, which they have called home for more than two decades.

Another must-read article highlights the 30-year anniversary of the Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market. Market Milestone tells the tale of how a whim of an idea to “liven up the town” became a community institution. Offering everything from breads and produce to candies and other artisanal products, this market has become a Friday morning tradition for many.

Rounding out our features this month is an article that chronicles Lake Forest-based North Shore FC’s evolution from a five-team youth soccer organization to a 20-team powerhouse. Turn to Not Just for Kicks to learn more about Ross Bristow and his vision for the American Youth Soccer Association (AYSO) team.

The Good Life section is also full of useful information about local events, style solutions, luxury travel, and delicious dishes to fill your summer dinner table.

And if you’re a fan of the upscale Forest & Found charitable resale boutique in downtown Lake Forest, you won’t want to miss this month’s essay in The Last Word. Diana Durkes says she didn’t grow up going to thrift stores in her rural Illinois town but quickly learned the joy of reusing, re-purposing, and re-inventing objects that might have ended up in the landfill. We especially love how her store gives back to local charities— with more than $500,000 distributed in her nearly 10 years in business.

With that, the beach and your favorite book is calling. Enjoy what’s left of this fabulous season. We’ll see you again in September.

Finding Balance

Meet Molly Harper, a busy Lake Bluff mom and yogi who juggles life, travel, and family.

hair and makeup by Leanna Ernest

Beach, mountains, or city for vacation? Saltwater beach in the winter. Lake in the summer.

Sixteen years ago, Molly Harper and her husband Brad decided to make Lake Bluff their home. Today, as the busy mom to three teenagers— Jackson, Reese, and Brady—Molly can’t imagine her life anywhere else. Fitness has long been a passion of Molly’s—26 years to be exact—having been an aerobics instructor while in college and a BodyPump teacher at the Lake Bluff Recreation Center for nearly 10 years. But her dreams of owning her own business came true when she opened a yoga studio—SunShala Yoga (“Sun” is for her dog Sunny and “Shala” means home in Sanskrit). “I remember the feeling I had when I first discovered power yoga and I love seeing others fall in love with it the same way,” Molly says. “I feel so lucky to do what I do and work with all the amazing people I get to see every day.”

Favorite dinner to make? Taco/burrito bowls. I put out all the ingredients and everyone makes their own plate, easy peasy.

Top 3 favorite things in Lake Forest or Lake Bluff? The beach, SunShala Yoga, and the people. How do you find balance between work and family? Owning my own business has given me the freedom to be available to my family almost all of the time. Plus, I absolutely love what I do, so it never feels like work to me. Beach, mountains, or city for vacation? Saltwater beach in the winter. Lake in the summer. We have a place in Canada that we have gone to since I was born. It’s exactly the same as it was when I was little (no electricity), so my kids get to experience the same vacation I did when I was younger. It’s truly magical. Favorite color? Pink. Favorite music? ‘80s pop and ‘90s alternative rock. I can pretty much win any music trivia from these eras. Favorite dinner to make? Taco/burrito bowls. I put out all the ingredients and everyone makes their own plate, easy peasy. Favorite mom hack? I have started scheduling weekly walks with all different people from my past and present. Scheduling these walks has become so meaningful to me. We both get exercise and uninterrupted time to catch up and talk. Favorite beauty product? Diorshow Maximizer 3D Lash Primer, I get asked all the time if my lashes are real. Favorite designer? Shoshanna—I buy all of my holiday and dressy dresses from this brand. Last book you read? Lessons in Chemistry Last TV series you watched? Ted Lasso. I love feel-good shows! And sadly, I’m also a big Real Housewives fan ... any city! Favorite workout? Power yoga. Coffee or tea? Coffee, black. Typical Starbucks order? Very basic. Grande Pike Place, no room for cream, with a couple of ice cubes (I like to drink it right away). Sweet or savory? Sweet. I am every chocolate chip cookie’s best friend, or maybe worst enemy if you are the cookie. Go-to snack? Cheese and crackers. Cocktail or mocktail? Cocktail—Tito’s and soda with a lime. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Super early bird. I teach at least three classes per week at 6:30 a.m. and I like to get up at least an hour before to get my Zen going. Paper planner or digital? Digital—I would be lost without my iCal. I have a million alarms set on my phone so I don’t forget things. Greatest source for inspiration? My family. They make me want to be better and live a healthy life. Also, my parents—they have been married for 57 years and still have fun together. Best advice you’ve ever been given? My parents have always said, don’t ever be anything you aren’t and don’t take yourself too seriously. Those who know me know that I’m a goofball. Your words of advice to a new entrepreneur? Listen to your customers. Don’t let your ego lead your way. Be willing to shift gears and switch directions if necessary but be sure to stay true to you. Two things on your bucket list? I want to visit Europe and be a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, or maybe just learn a dance from Derek Hough. Favorite time of the year? Fall! I love sweaters, jeans, and football games. Are you a dog or cat person? Dog! I love cats, but I’m allergic. Best thing about being a mom? I love absolutely everything about being a mom. If I had to pick the best, it is watching them grow into amazing young adults. Suggestions for keeping a consistent workout/yoga routine? Schedule your workouts like meetings and put them on your calendar. If you do this, you will have time blocked off for you and will be less likely to cancel it or decide not to do it. Make it a priority and you will start to notice changes in yourself, physically and mentally, right away.

Last book you read? Lessons in Chemistry.

Favorite beauty product? Diorshow

Maximizer 3D Lash Primer, I get asked all the time if my lashes are real.

Sweet or savory?

Sweet. I am every chocolate chip cookie’s best friend, or maybe worst enemy if you are the cookie.

Bitter Good (Radicchio & Lettuces with Pancetta, Blue Cheese, and Roasted Garlic Vinaigrette)

words, photography, and recipe by Monica

Ilike bitter lettuces—radicchio, endive, arugula—even dandelion, but balanced. So, this salad has just a few leaves of the most pungent ones, with lots of oak leaf and arugula. I sweetly mellowed the mix with a roasted garlic and white balsamic vinaigrette, pancetta crisped in olive oil that you spoon over to wilt the lettuces a bit, and a perfect blue cheese.

SERVES FOUR

METHOD ROAST GARLIC

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Slice the top of the garlic head off to expose the tops of the cloves. Place garlic in oven-friendly crock with 2 Tbsp. Roast until garlic is soft.

MAKE VINAIGRETTE

In a small bowl add olive oil from roasting the garlic plus enough to make 4 Tbsp. Add vinegar, sugar, and two of the soft roasted garlic cloves. Mash and whisk into a smooth paste. Add white balsamic vinegar, palm sugar and salt and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more white balsamic if desired. Whisk well.

MAKE SALAD

In a large bowl, combine all lettuces. Add a drizzle of olive oil to a sauté pan over medium heat along with the pancetta or prosciutto and two more of the soft roasted garlic cloves. Mash garlic into the meat and fry until meat is crispy on the edges. Turn out onto the salad to wilt lettuces a bit. Drizzle with some of the vinaigrette and toss to coat. Taste and add more vinaigrette as needed, plus more pepper to taste. Sprinkle with prosciutto and blue cheese crumbles. Serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 head garlic, oven roasted with 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil until garlic is soft

• Extra virgin olive oil from roasting the garlic plus enough to make 4 Tbsp

• 2 Tbsp white balsamic vinegar, plus more to taste

East Meets West

The iconic Aman hospitality brand brings a new level of luxury to Manhattan’s Crown Building. Prepare to be amazed.

36 FOREST & BLUFF The Good Life
Crown Building exterior

Expectations are everything. After years of anticipation, Aman New York—the newest addition to the ultra-exclusive, boutique hospitality and resort chain, including the stunning Amangiri in Utah and glorious Amangani in Wyoming—finally opened its doors late last year in Midtown Manhattan.

The city’s historic Crown Building was thoughtfully reimagined as Aman New York, where the city’s original architectural splendor meets Aman’s harmonious design language. With a year-round Garden Terrace, flagship Aman Spa, and some of the largest suites in the city, this is the hotel to book for any New York City sojourn.

From the moment of your arrival, expect everything to be on brand—down to doormen sharply dressed in Tom Ford suits and a corridor of glimmering walls with an East meets West inspiration.

Throughout the hotel, and especially in the lobby, you’ll be inspired by a contemporary design that blends soft light and natural materials with profuse floral arrangements inspired by the Japanese art of Ikebana.

The lobby offers a warm, comfortable, inviting area, around the corner from the bar, and entry to Arva, the hotel’s Italian restaurant, and the real showstopper—the

Garden Terrace with a retractable roof and windows that stream with sunlight.

There appears to have been a driving desire to pull the outdoors inside as the 7,000-square-foot garden oasis is filled with plush but casual seating and understated elements of greenery—including potted trees—and a fireplace in the middle of a tranquil pool.

Our first dining experience on this decadent weekend will be at the hotel’s Japanese restaurant, Nama. A traditional washoku Japanese restaurant, expect to feast on such delicacies as Wagyu beef, sweet miso black cod, and nigiri or sashimi.

Quickly it becomes apparent that you could eat and enjoy every meal on this

The Good Life DEPARTURES

Manhattan escape without even leaving the Aman. The food was so exceptional that outsiders were coming in from outside to dine here, a rarity for hotel restaurants.

With 83 rooms, the property feels like a boutique hotel yet offers an astounding variety of facilities for a hotel of its size. And despite being part of an international chain, there isn’t a set formula to the décor or amenities. Everything is on brand, yet unique. Rooms and suites are beautiful, well thought out, and comfortably luxurious.

World class spas, however, are synonymous with the Aman brand and no doubt it’s one of the many highlights of this New York property. Aman New York’s “vertical spa resort” occupies three floors and 25,000 square feet. The 65-foot heated indoor pool (with lounge chairs and cushioned daybeds that feel like they are taken from a spa relaxation room) is the perfect space to start the day.

Heading into the locker rooms, the sauna and steam room are in separate male/ female changing rooms, but they’ve got you covered if you do want to share them, as you can rent a Spa House! Featuring a double treatment room with a living area, sauna, Vichy shower, and an outdoor terrace with a hot tub and plunge pool, you can rent a Spa House for a full- or half-day experience.

As for the spa’s treatment offerings, if you want it done, they probably offer it. Freeze away your physical stress in the double-capacity cryotherapy chamber try a

not-so-traditional Fotona4D facial (which is basically a nonsurgical facelift) or opt for an Aman Signature Facial.

On our final evening, we opt to dine at Arva—a tribute to Italy’s rich culinary heritage that you will also find at Aman’s Venice location. Helmed by Chef Dario Ossola, dishes are created with sustainable ingredients. After a meal of fresh, housemade pasta and salt-crusted black sea bass, we head to the speakeasy-style Jazz Club for a night to remember. The acoustics alone are something you need to hear with your own ears.

Two nights go quickly at Aman New York but that just means it’s time to book your next visit.

As for expectations, they are exceeded in every way.

The hotel is filled with beautiful, smartly designed public areas and rooms, and you can feel the exclusivity from every corner of the property. For New York, the combination of a terrace, amazing spa, spacious rooms, exceptional location (did we mention that Bergdorf Goodman is right across the street?), Michelin star quality food, and impeccable service is a grand slam home run.

Until the next time, you might say upon checkout, knowing it won’t be long until you grace that fabulous 57th street doorstep once again.

STEP ONE OF THE STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS™

Decision-Making for Children

Divorce is complicated. It can be messy.

And when you’re first starting out, it’s incredibly overwhelming. The attorneys at Strategic Divorce strive to educate our clients on all relevant matters to ease an often-difficult process. We believe knowledge of the divorce process provides the strength and peace of mind to complete it. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™.

My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved, and two distinct steps where no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts. In this monthly series, we will examine each topic beginning with the first step of decision-making for children.

Any divorce that involves children includes discussions around decision-making and visitation—the two components that make up the custody agreement. Decision-making for the children tends to be straightforward and uncomplicated so it is usually determined first.

There are many decisions that come up throughout a child’s life—from big ones, such as where to go to school or to have a medical procedure, to smaller ones like what to eat for dinner each day. Generally speaking, the court tries very hard to keep most dayto-day decisions out of the custody agreement. What happens during each parent’s visitation is their responsibility to handle as they see fit.

However, for larger decisions, a decision-making structure is outlined. These decisions are separated into four categories—religious, education, medical, and extracurriculars.

There are three primary types of decision-making structures— sole decision-making, sole decision-making with consulting, and joint decision-making.

In sole decision-making, one parent gets the opportunity to make all of the decisions (in a given category) without the other parent having any input or approval. Rather than having one par-

ent in charge of all large decisions, each parent will have specific categories. For example, one parent will be in charge of medical decisions and the other will handle all education and religious decisions. Extracurriculars is the only category that is almost always joint, as there are financial implications for each parent.

Sole decision-making works very well in situations where the parents aren’t amicable, or there are abuse issues as it limits the number of interactions and the number of items the parents need to agree upon.

It is also possible to have sole decision-making with consulting. In this structure, the two parents are required to talk through any situation that arises, trying to find a way forward that they can both agree upon. Of course, it is possible that the parents will not agree on every decision. Because of this, one party does have the final decision-making power. However, they are required to consult the other parent and give them an opportunity to share their opinion.

Regardless of whether the relationship has remained amicable, most parents choose to move forward with joint decision-making. Neither parent typically wants to risk the other gaining sole decision-making power and, therefore, agrees to joint decision-making as a compromise. In joint decision-making, both parents must agree on the decision being made. If the parents can’t agree, they must attempt to find a solution through mediation. If mediation is unsuccessful, then either party can file a motion with the court and the court makes the decision for them. While the prospects of mediation and going to court may feel daunting, most parents find that they are able to agree on major decisions jointly without the need for mediation or court intervention.

Once the decision-making structure is settled, the second component of the custody agreement—visitation—is addressed. This complicated, and sometimes contentious, step will be explained in Forest & Bluff ’s September issue.

Wellness In Session

Noted sports psychologist and founder of EleVive Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo has some advice for parents to help them prepare their kids for the upcoming school year.

For middle school and high school students, going back to school after a summer off can be a stressful time. After a summer focusing on activities other than studies it’s challenging to get the brain muscle switched on and ready for the classroom.

Lake Forest psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo works with students, particularly student athletes, and their parents to help students focus with precision on their academic and athletic pursuits. Lombardo has advised hundreds of students and parents over the years and is the author of the book, Get Out of the Red Zone, which offers sound tips for training one’s mind for success.

“Our mind is a muscle. If you don’t use it, you lose it,” Dr. Lombardo says. “So, if you haven’t been focusing, concentrating, problem-solving, and using that executive functioning much and jump right into school it can be a little challenging.”

There are some things that parents can do over the summer to keep their kids’ minds active and engaged in problem-solving. Getting them involved in planning vacations, such as researching flights and accommodations, is a lot more fun—and family-centric—than trying to keep their heads buried in a physics book.

A switch to the more structured day during the school year is a big stressor for many students. Over the summer their sleeping patterns have been altered and a return to the classroom can feel a bit like boot camp.

“A lot of times stress levels are just lower in the summer than during the school year. Jumping in when they not only have to get up and have more regimen, but they also have to participate in classes and complete homework,” says Lombardo. “I work with a lot of athletes and going from a stress-free environment and back to their sport and practice can be overwhelming.”

Dr. Lombardo talks a lot about what she calls the Red Zone—the subject of her book—and how it limits

not just students’ but everyone’s ability to overcome stress or distress. When our mind is allowed to creep into the Red Zone, our ability to manage the pressures of the day-to-day is significantly diminished.

“For parents, being super aware of how their kids are doing emotionally and psychologically is incredibly important,” she says. “But parents also have to ask themselves if they’re in their own Red Zone. Are they feeling overwhelmed? They have the same responsibilities they had during the summer but add to it the stress of getting the kids ready for school and making sure they are prepared to learn.”

And even the younger kids can help themselves (and their parents, too!) by taking on responsibilities that involve problem solving. We often think children are too young for certain tasks but more often than not are surprised how mature they can be.

“A lot of times parents say, ‘They’re too young for that’, but it’s really important for children to have responsibility,” says Dr. Lombardo. “Giving them responsibilities now is really helpful for the transition to the school year.”

Not Just For Kicks

Lake Forest-based North Shore FC has grown from a five-team youth soccer organization in 2017 to a 20team regional outfit with championship timber behind the leadership of Ross Bristow and the AYSO 163 Board.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 20, will be quite the soccer day, globally and locally.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final is scheduled to be staged at 7 a.m. Central Time in Sydney, Australia.

Hours after its conclusion, all 20 teams (200-plus players) of a local soccer organization—Lake Forest-based North Shore FC—will attend the Orlando City vs. Chicago Fire men’s soccer match as part of its inaugural fundraiser at Soldier Field in Chicago. A nonprofit co-founded by Ross Bristow and Debbie Gallagher in 2017, North Shore FC is the competitive side of American Youth Soccer Association (AYSO) 163.

North Shore FC fielded a combined five boys and girls teams (U9 through U11) in its first year, with most of the organization’s players hailing from either Lake Forest or Lake Bluff. Twenty teams—featuring players (U8 through U18) from at least a dozen additional suburbs—represent the futbol club today, and the U12 girls squad captured the Illinois Youth Soccer Association Junior Presidents Cup in Rockford last October.

“We wanted to create a high-level youth soccer club in the community,” says the 32-year-old Bristow, a native of England who played professionally for Cambridge United (2008-2010) in England and for the Chicago Mustangs (2016) of the Major Arena Soccer League. “That result in Rockford was a huge accomplishment. We’re driven to teach life skills and to develop all-around soccer players. We preach an attacking style of play.

“I want to see our players eventually excel at the high

school and collegiate levels and maybe watch some of them play on TV someday. Alex Morgan started as an AYSO player.”

Morgan is a superstar striker for the United States women’s national soccer team and the captain of San Diego Wave FC of the National Women’s Soccer League. There’s a great chance she’ll dazzle millions of TV viewers in that FIFA Women’s World Cup final on August 20.

At North Shore FC’s fundraiser on the same date, the primary goal will be to raise awareness of the burgeoning club and its capable coaching staff (Bristow, who coaches six of the 20 teams, along with Lorant Balasi, Julian Roman, Uriel Pedraza, Anthony Cordaro, and Frankie Gomez). A kick back of $5 for each Orlando City-Chicago Fire ticket sale will be allocated to North Shore FC.

North Shore FC players might get to kick the ball around at Soldier Field before the Major League Soccer game’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

“The players respect Ross right away, and they follow his lead,” says Lake Forest resident Jason Smith, whose 10-year-old son, Cameron, started playing soccer at the age of 9, competed as a back, midfielder, and forward

for a North Shore FC U10 Volt team (7-0-1) team last year, and earned a spot as a midfielder on a North Shore FC U11 Elite team—two levels above Volt—this year. “There’s a seriousness at practices. During games, the coaches don’t scream. My son loves soccer, identifies himself as a soccer player. He comes home after practices and works on his game some more.”

Cameron Smith, who will be a fifth grader at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest this fall, executed a wow-filled Rainbow move during a match in June, flicking, while dribbling, the ball to himself—from behind his frame—to confound a defender and set up an assist shortly thereafter.

“What was quite helpful last year was Ross allowing U10 Volt players to practice with U10 Elite players,” Jason Smith says. “Volt players developed their skills through those opportunities (while connecting, at a variety of levels, with potential future teammates). My son and others made more friends at the same time. It’s a nimble organization, with merit and the expectation that every player on each team will show up at every practice.”

Bristow’s and Gallagher’s other titles are North Shore executive director and AYSO president, respectively.

Bristow’s penchant for generating rapid soccer success played out this past spring during his second season as Woodlands Academy’s head coach. The Lake Villa resident and father of two (Brody, 3, and Beau, 20 months, with wife Lindsay) guided the Wildcats to a 12-5 record and the program’s first Illinois High School Association (IHSA) girls soccer regional championship since a team coached by Amy Perry netted WA’s second such title in 2014.

Bristow also runs RB Soccer, offering private coach-

ing and summer training sessions. North Shore FC’s summer camps are held at Northcroft Park in Lake Forest.

“There are a lot of soccer clubs available out there,” Bristow says, adding North Shore FC teams have also battled in tournaments held in Wisconsin, Missouri, and Indiana, with future plans to compete in Ohio and Florida. “We realize parents have many choices. At North Shore FC, we’re looking to grow in numbers and up our competitiveness by drawing strong players from all over the North Shore and beyond.”

More than 1,300 families have moved to Lake Forest since 2021, Jason Smith notes. Hundreds of budding soccer players in the influx continue to dribble soccer balls in back yards and basements as they await the chances to display their talents against the area’s best.

“It’s an important time in our country for soccer, with the Women’s World Cup going on this summer and the U.S. getting ready to host (with Canada and Mexico) the Men’s World Cup in 2026,” Smith says. “That’s why I think it’s so valuable to have a strong organization like North Shore FC available for soccer-loving kids of all ages.”

Visit northshorefc.org and rbsoccer.com for more information. For information about purchasing tickets, contact Ross Bristow at ross@northshorefc.org or 224-401-5662. To reach Debbie Gallagher, email ayso163@comcast.net or call 708334-0139.

Lori Lennon and Don Lynch of Lake Forest.

Toast of The Town

YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THEM AROUND TOWN, she with her signature silver-blonde coif and stylish couture, and he with a dry wit and genteel nature that many North Shore women would reportedly love to clone.

They are the first to raise their hand to support a local arts organization, first in line to RSVP for the next black tie gala—a regular pair of bon vivants who famously hold court at The Deerpath Inn pub, splitting a burger with cocktails while mesmerizing their circle of friends with the anecdote du jour.

They are both also highly accomplished in their respective fields, each with their own local claim to fame. She’s the interior design diva who’s worked on over 75 high-profile showhouses around the country, including this year’s Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens (remember that amazing East Cottage kitchen?). He’s the charmer who will remember your name even after one meeting.

And in the more than two decades since they made Lake Forest their home—beyond their reputation as the life of every party—somehow Lori Lennon and Donald “Don” Lynch have touched our community in profound and lasting ways.

But who is this “it” couple, and what is their story?

We spent some time with Lennon and Lynch in recent weeks to find out just that, and also get to the bottom of the question every person who’s ever met them is dying to ask—where do they get all that energy?

“I truly believe that if we are magnetic and social, it’s only because of our friends,” says Lennon, a renowned interior designer who has worked on projects around the world, from Greece and Holland to Indonesia and Mexico. “We have the most wonderful friends that are truly special, many of them much younger than us. Don and I are very blessed that they give us the inspiration to keep up and their love back to us gives way too much energy.”

Their laughter and affection for one another is almost contagious, as is their passion for life.

“Don is an amazing man. I’ve never met anyone that everyone loves,” she gushes, then quips. “Everywhere we go, we are welcome because of him. I guess I’m OK too.”

The daughter of Polish immigrants, Lennon was a child of humble beginnings who even at a young age, found ways to make the world around her more beautiful. A very “average” family living room in her family’s south side Chicago home was transformed with

Some might say Lori Lennon and Don Lynch are the most sought after couple in Lake Forest, social butterflies who are seen everywhere from the hottest North Shore gala to their favorite corner at The Deer Path Inn. young Lori’s dolls and stuffed toys. As she got to grade school, her first “decorative accessories” were found at a neighborhood novelty store.

“I would purchase inexpensive lamps and pillows for my bedroom. I also painted a mural on my bedroom wall,” explains Lennon, adding that she couldn’t wait to get tall enough to reach the treadle on her mother’s old sewing machine so she could begin making simple window treatments. “I also talked my dad into changing fabric on our dining room chair seats, even though I had never done it before!”

This blossoming young interior designer soaked in every aesthetic detail she encountered, especially the interior architecture of her beloved St. John Cantius church. “As I grew older, I walked many other blocks in the neighborhood to explore the exterior architecture of homes I loved. In the evening, while Dad was driving, I loved seeing the lighted interiors of rooms,” she says. “Through high school, I studied fashion design and sewing. I made frequent visits to Marshall Fields to

visit the furniture department—mostly the interior design center to see what was new in furniture and antiques.”

After high school, Lennon continued her studies at Ray Vogue Art School’s Ray College of Design and took additional courses in fundamentals of architecture and design. She soon became a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and embarked on a career specializing in interior architecture, lighting, residential interiors, and commercial design.

By the time she made a fateful trip to an ASID conference in 1981—a sojourn that would put her right in the path of dashing fellow design professional Don Lynch—Lennon was an established interior designer with an impressive roster of clients and ASID showhouses under her belt. She was also a mother, raising a 10-year-old son while running her own business.

“Rosemary, a dear friend who was also an ASID interior designer who lived there, encouraged me to work on the conference activities. Opening night was held at a stunning 1920s mansion high up on a hill overlooking the city of St. Louis. The theme was roaring twenties ... I recall it so well. The mansion was architecturally beautiful, both outside and inside,” she muses. “It was a gorgeous summer evening and Rosemary introduced me to Don, among others. We talked a little bit and now we both realized it was probably love at first sight. Of course, I also look pretty cute in my flapper outfit.”

The seeds of a great romance were planted and Lynch was not going to let this one get away.

An expert at hiring contract designers for office systems projects and corporate office design, the St. Louis native found reasons to make the trip to the Chicago area—always making sure to give Lennon a call. The dates were the stuff of rom coms. And by 1983, the couple was married and began their lives together, Lynch enthusiastically taking on the role of stepfather to Lennon’s son, James.

They settled down at first in Deerfield, each building their respective businesses. But something about Lake Forest kept calling their name.

“I just loved the town. I had several clients here,” explains Lennon, who has over the years served in a variety of leadership positions at ASID, including president of the Illinois Chapter. She also has the dis-

tinction of chairing showhouses around the country for more than two decades, sometimes up to three at a time, including several in Lake Forest. “Every time I came here, I loved driving around and looking at the architecture, especially the beautiful mansions. In doing showhouses, we did many mansions and several David Adler houses.”

That said, both were worried that the dream of building a home here was too aspirational. Even their realtor told them it was too expensive.

“We did have concerns about the cost, but we drove around Lake Forest and saw Conway Farms had three lots left,” she confesses. “I fell in love with the lot we purchased without knowing the costs to build,”

Lynch chimes in, agreeing, of course.

“Lori always said she wanted to design her own home, I said ‘you better design it’,” he says. “She did design our house here and we got an architect to sign off on it.”

“We found the perfect architect to draw my vision and the perfect builder that met our budget,” adds Lennon.

That was 24 years ago, just long enough for Lake Forest’s “it couple” to establish ties that last a lifetime.

ing in the same style as David Adler to give the room more architectural flair. “I can tell you that was probably my best room. I introduced an interesting shade of the greenest blue but the draperies had to be a match to it to bring out the color. I added a cast glass fireplace in that room. I took custom-made, cast blocks and created the mantel. It was just beautiful.”

The Smiths hired her to replicate that room in their own Summerfield home and before long, Lennon was taking classes at their art school at the Adler estate.

“Nancy suggested I take the class. She said ‘I know you can draw!’ so she paid for my first lesson,” says Lennon. “And you know what? I can draw, and paint very well. I’m so grateful to Nancy.”

That love of art carries over to the Lake Forest home she shares with Don, which has not only become a sanctuary for the couple but a bridge for generations and stories that are constantly evolving.

“In our entrance hall, we covered the walls ceiling to floor with a custom-painted mural. It depicts scenes from our family,” Lennon explains, “Our son is a Leo and because of his importance, we have a very large lion painted and numbers of other subtle familyrelated symbols added with the background of a beautiful outdoor scenery.”

The artist painted the mural on canvas so it can be removed and saved if the house were sold. However, that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon. This power couple isn’t even close to losing steam. In fact, every day they’re out on the town looking for that next fabulous cause to support—that next great conversation.

“Every available Friday night we always have dinner at the bar,” says Lennon, adding that in addition to their long-time favorites of The Deerpath Inn, Froggy’s, and Inovasi, the couple’s new obsession is the stunning Le Colonial in Market Square. “In a number of instances, someone will see us at the bar and say hello and what a wonderful time they had meeting us in the past. Then we meet more people and create new moments.”

When asked if there was anything this ever-expanding social circle might be surprised to know about either of them, the initial response was going to be a hard “no.” Then Lennon remembered that made Lynch smile. She has a nickname, one that dates back decades to the time she was getting a passport.

“I had to go downtown to pick up a copy of my birth certificate,” she says, explaining it was taking longer than it should have. “The woman came out and said, ‘why didn’t you tell me your name was Florence and changed to Lorraine?’”

“We love it here. We are very blessed and support as many charities as possible,” Lennon says, citing that in addition to being a member of the Lincoln Presidential Foundation board in Springfield, she and Don support a long list of organizations that includes Citadel Theatre, Mother’s Trust Foundation, Glasa Charities, Equestrian Connection, Catholic Charities, Lake Forest Open Lands Association, and dozens more local and national nonprofits.

They’ve also made friends in every corner of the community, including local philanthropists (and artists extraordinaire) Adrian and Nancy Smith.

Lennon says the Smiths (who also famously support Citadel Theatre) took note of an architectural feature she added to a room in a recent showhouse. The historic home had been designed by David Adler, the same architect that designed another home the Smiths were restoring.

“The Adler showhouse’s primary bedroom had no molding. Nothing,” she adds, explaining that she drew up plans added mold-

Lennon had no idea but thought it was amusing, so much so that a fellow designer friend began jokingly calling her “Flo.” The second that Lynch heard that nickname, it stuck.

“When we’re out in an open public space and I’m a distance away, he shouts “Flo!” and I hear that and everybody turns around,” she laughs.

“I shouldn’t do that,” he says, also laughing.

“It’s cute,” she adds. “I call him Donnie. Our friends held a surprise party to celebrate us once and we got little bobblehead lookalikes. We’re dancing and there’s Don and me, and I look at that on our kitchen counter now and say ‘there’s Donnie’.”

The social magnetism is real, as is their love for each other and life in general. Just ask their entourage.

“We’re older than most of our friends and they call us and invite us to everything. They’re amazed that we close the place,” adds Lennon. “They say ‘how can you stay up so late?’ and I just say ‘we’re having fun’.”

Market Milestone

The Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, carrying on a special local tradition that unites the community.

“People come because of the quality of the food.”
FOREST

AS WITH MOST TRADITIONS, the Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market was launched somewhat serendipitously.

It was 30 years ago that Fred Wacker, Chair man of the Board of Trustees in Lake Bluff, pulled aside Kathleen Gridley Swanson’s better half, Frank “Pony” Swanson (who was the Economic Development Chairman in Lake Bluff at the time) and told him the town needed some livening up.

Pony came home that day and asked Gridley what she thought of the idea of a farmers’ market.

“Whatever you want, hon,” was Gridley’s response, a working mom at the time with plenty of other issues on her mind. Neither knew then their banter would lead to a longstanding tradition in downtown Lake Bluff.

The Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market is now a North Shore institution, a thoughtfully cultivated collection of vendors offering breads, produce, candies, and other products that locals

have come to love. It’s also become a community gathering spot for North Shore residents on Friday mornings throughout the summer months.

“People come because of the quality of the food. We have great vendors. We have a committee of six who reviews the vendor applications,” says Gridley Swanson, who now manages the market. “Our vendors come because they know Lake Bluff is a great market.”

There’s a lady from Grayslake who makes appetizer dips,

flower vendors (who doesn’t love flowers in summer?), and food trucks that serve up pork sliders and other tasty treats.

“It’s not the biggest market in the world. Lake Bluff is not the biggest community in the world, but it’s a wonderful market,” Swanson says.

She is a people person at heart and the job of managing a farmers’ market, for her, is hand in glove. Pony didn’t know it at the time he conceived of the idea, but his spouse turned out to be a perfect fit to oversee it.

“Any market manager, not just me, acts as a mini chamber of commerce. People ask me, ‘Where is the library? Where can I get a sandwich?’,” she says. “I enjoy seeing people. It’s a very positive event. The Public Works Department sets up tables and chairs for people to come and spend time with one another.”

While the vendors and the food and products on offer are the main attraction of the market, Lake Bluff has made summer Fridays a larger community event.

There’s story time for children, performances by local musicians, and, with a bit of luck, you can catch RC Juggles, a local entertainer, work his magic.

Swanson says the market does allow for one vendor who doesn’t offer something edible but perhaps an essential service for eaters—an expert knife sharpener.

“We feel our knife sharpener is food related,” she says. “If you want to be able to slice your apples in fall and carve your pumpkins, you need sharp knives.”

If you haven’t checked it out yet, we highly recommend. Tell ‘em Pony sent you.

The Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market runs on Fridays from 7 a.m. to noon in downtown Lake Bluff through October 13. For more information, visit lakebluff.org/residents/farmers-market.

ACU TE CARE

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE

Many patients that I see in consultations think they need a facelift. What they really need to address is the aging process around the mouth, which is not corrected by a traditional facelift.

As we age, the distance between the base of the nose and upper lip lengthens and the corners of the mouth droop. The lips lose volume, thin out, and wrinkles and vertical lines appear. There are various options to restore and create a more youthful mouth. First is a lip lift, where a small incision is made at the base of the nose and an ellipse of skin is removed to shorten the distance and create a fuller lip. The droop of the corners of the mouth is addressed by excising a “valentine” ellipse of skin, creating a lift. This improves the “marionette” lines and corrects an angry or sad expression. Lastly, the lower lip loses volume, and if deemed too thin, an incision is made in the central lower lip. An ellipse of skin is removed, and the lip is rolled downward. The procedure provides a plump youthful lower lip. All of these incisions are very well hidden and heal extremely well.

If additional volume is needed, the patient has several options. A fat transfer using the patient’s own fat can be injected into the nasolabial folds, lips, marionette, and pre-jowl areas to restore volume. Fillers such as Restylane® or Juvéderm® are other options. Laser resurfacing, plasma peels, and/or injections are often employed to correct the fine lines, wrinkles, or skin texture,

All of the above procedures are often done at once depending upon what is needed. This can only be determined after a careful exam. The art of facial rejuvenation is to create a perfectly natural face that looks refreshed and youthful. There truly is an “art” to this involving far more than just injections and some fillers. Patients have choices and should seek out an expert who is comfortable with all of these techniques.

FOUND OBJECTS

Diana Durkes loves to remake, repurpose, and reimagine a variety of items, breathing new life into furniture, decorative accessories, and pieces that were once discarded. Her upscale resale boutique in downtown Lake Forest encourages others to do the same, introducing a new generation to the art of charitable thrift.

Diana Durkes didn’t know much about thrifting as a kid growing up in rural Illinois. It just wasn’t a thing. She did, however, master the art of dumpster diving at an early age—a rare talent best embodied by her mother’s best friend, Phyllis. We all know a Phyllis; we all want to be Phyllis. So did Durkes. “In her Woody station wagon, Phyllis would spy a chair put on the curb, pick it up, and reupholster it into the coolest chair you ever sat in,” says Durkes, a self-described “re-maker at heart” who opened her Forest & Found charitable resale shop in Lake Forest nearly a decade ago. “She was probably the first person to make a bar cart out of a stereo cabinet.” It quickly became an obsession, a passion, and now a vocation. “I like to think I was an early tastemaker in the reuse/recycle movement,” she laughs. “I take existing found items, treat them as resources, and usher them into a new life.” Even before opening Forest & Found in 2014, Durkes’ unique creations were showcased in Time Out Chicago, Apartment Therapy, Ikea Hacks and various other sites, including her own Fine Diving blog. “I’ve done lots of different things in my career over the years,” she adds. “When my five kids were small, I took jobs around their schedule.” Gigs included project management for small businesses and a stint working for Northwestern University, but the one that stands out most was a seasonal job she snagged at Crate & Barrel. “I fell in love with its

retail aesthetic,” says Durkes, who now incorporates that experience into her own shop. “We try hard to create and maintain that one-of-a-kind vibe. I consider it part of our mission to inspire people to incorporate existing products into their lifestyle.” It’s a two-fold endeavor, really. First off, it keeps still useful items out of the landfill. But perhaps more important is a business model that combines creative reuse with raising funds for area charities. “It’s a model that revolves around the fabulous donors, shoppers, and supporters that have contributed to our success,” says Durkes, adding that Forest & Found has proudly given more than $500,000 to local nonprofits. “I also like that we’re a store of used and useful items. I’m not saying we’re going to solve the globe’s plastics issues but we are making small gestures in the reuse/recycle matter.” The result is a shopping experience one customer referred to as “magic,” and she’s happy to be that enterprise providing “a little bit of fairy dust” into people’s lives. Durkes has made some of her own epic finds at the shop as well, including a pair of MOMA tennis shoes (“that brought not one, but two compliments the minute I wore them!”) and a funky bo-ho mirror that has a place of prominence on the mantel of her Evanston home. Turns out, Phyllis was on to something. This is way more fun that going to the mall. “You get the ‘Aha!’ experience of spotting it, loving it, and taking it home with a story to boot,” adds Durkes. All that’s missing is the Woody.
