Editor’s Note

Spring is finally here and we’re pleased to bring you all the best of sunshine and new beginnings in this May issue.

Our cover story this month, Empire of Excess, showcases this season’s most chic, timeless, and elegant looks. We were honored to shoot this feature at the beautiful Lake Forest estate of the late Jim and Victoria Mills.

Another fabulous location you’ll recognize in our May issue is Crab Tree Farm in Lake Bluff, where we shot photos of Lainey O’Neil and Isabelle Chong—two top-notch youth tennis players who joined forces at Lake Forest High School to compete and win state twice in a row. Turn to the Matchless feature in the pages ahead to read more about these rising young tennis stars and their plans for the future.

Next up, we draw your attention to the Associate Board of the Lake Forest Open Lands Association, which will host its annual spring outdoor fundraiser, Cattails & Cocktails, under the stars on Saturday, May 20, at the Mellody Farm Nature Preserve. The feature story, Starry Night, tells you all you need to know about the event, which sounds like the perfect beginning to summertime fun.

Speaking of summertime fun, The Portrait for May showcases fashion calligrapher gone yoga guru, Joi Hunt of Lake Forest. Learn all about her and what inspires her to

be the best version of herself.

In this month of renewal and warmer weather, it’s also time to turn over our closets to spring and summer. With so many aspirational trends, one that gives the most summer vibes is everything crochet—a little earthy and boho. You will find all the coolest ways to crochet in this month’s The Fix

May is the highlight of the spring season. It’s a time to begin to gather outdoors, breathe in some fresh air, and prepare for another beautiful summer. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue and look forward to seeing you around town.

RITA HAYWORTH GALA Rita Hayworth once said, “We are all Tied to Our Destiny.” On Saturday, May 13, the Four Seasons Chicago will be transformed to host the 35th annual Alzheimer’s Association Chicago Rita Hayworth Gala. The Gala, founded by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, daughter of famed actress Rita Hayworth, will include a cocktail reception, silent auction, dining, and dancing accompanied by live music from Maggie Speaks. This year, the event is chaired by Tara Gibney, a member of the Alzheimer’s Association Chicago Rita Hayworth Gala Steering Committee. WGN-TV anchor and investigative reporter Lourdes Duarte will emcee the evening. The Rita Hayworth Gala has grown into a multi-city event, raising critical funds for the Alzheimer’s Association’s care, support, and research programs. Since its inception, the Rita Hayworth Galas have raised more than $85 million, helping the Alzheimer’s Association make significant progress toward its vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. For more information, visit alz.org/events/rita-hayworth-gala-chicago.

PREP SCHOOL Maggie Bullock began her career as an editor at Vogue and served as ELLE’s deputy editor from 2010 to 2018. Now, Bullock has penned a book on J. Crew, the one-of-akind American brand—THE KINGDOM OF PREP: The Inside Story of the Rise and (Near) Fall of J.Crew. With unprecedented access, Bullock brings to life the deliciously idiosyncratic people who erected J.Crew; unpacks the foundation upon which it was built (the complex legacy of prep, a subculture born on the 1920s campuses of the Ivy League); and examines how one brand rose to epitomize “American” style in two very different golden eras. INSIDE THE

ATELIER

F&B Loves

Louis Vuitton fosters the idea that an atelier can be a place of fulfillment and individuality. A place where savoir-faire can be learned, respected, and transmitted—and innovation nurtured—by artisans who routinely challenge the image of a traditional workshop. In pursuit of regional expertise and artisanal excellence, Louis Vuitton’s ateliers span the length and breadth of France and beyond, from Geneva (Switzerland), to Fiesso d’Artico (Italy), and even Texas (USA). Sites of historic interest or outstanding natural beauty will often have a Louis Vuitton workshop nearby—in Normandy, the sea-girt fastness of Mont-Saint-Michel can be seen from the workshop at Ducey, and in Beaulieu-sur-Layon, the light-flooded facility promises low environmental impact. Featuring photographs commissioned exclusively for this book, the volume showcases the extraordinary locations and buildings of Louis Vuitton’s ateliers, and the equally extraordinary artisans who express their talent through Louis Vuitton’s creations (trunks, bags, fragrances, watches, shoes, high jewelry, and ready-to-wear) while carrying the founder’s techniques and savoir-faire into the 21st century. Most healing place you’ve ever visited? A tie between Zion National Park and Kauai. Both feature Mother Nature and Earth singing strong, and your vibration wants to be in harmony with it.

Joi Hunt has long been an engaged citizen of the world, eager to find beauty in the most ordinary moments and calm in a sea of chaos. So when this wife, mother, and acclaimed professional calligrapher was helping her Lake Forest family cope with the stress of the pandemic lockdown, she reflected on an experience she had on a trip to Zion National Park that brought peace to her mind, body, and soul. “I heard someone playing a singing bowl, and I connected to that sound,” says Hunt, explaining that even the simplest sound can rebalance the body’s frequencies to bring it to its natural state of harmony. Already a fitness enthusiast and selfdescribed “perpetual student,” she used that reflection as an inspiration to study and earn certification as a sound wellness practitioner. What is a “sound bath,” you might ask? According to Hunt’s website (joihunt.com) it’s a meditative experience that bathes you in sound waves and vibrations from singing bowls and other instruments for deep relaxation. Other benefits include stress reduction, clearer thinking, and mood improvement. “I really try to make my sound bath meditations as pleasing to all of your senses as I can. I want guests to enter our room and say, ‘wow, this looks like a spa’ or ‘it smells so good in here,’ says Hunt, who leads themed sound bath sessions at Gorton Center as well in her private practice. “I bring everything you need— a mat, a pillow, a blanket, and a bolster pillow is provided for each guest. By leaving your normal beta state of being alert, concentrating, and reacting, you should feel relaxed and recharged at the end of a sound bath.” The results are often transformative, as they are for her. “A sound bath can be a healing opportunity or bring up memories long forgotten,” she adds. “Hearing how the sound of a particular instrument allowed a guest to release suppressed emotion, or brought back a memory of a happy family vacation, is truly rewarding.” While Hunt continues with her calligraphy studio, she is excited to focus more of her creative energy on this sound wellness practice. “I am currently in a year long flute study program, so my hands are getting a workout, whether with a calligraphy pen or a Native American flute,” she says. If you are wondering exactly how this busy wife and mother does it all, you’re not alone. She says it’s all about setting priorites and being efficient. “I think it is just my nature to be busy learning and doing,” says Hunt. “And coffee. Lots of coffee.” Here are some of this go-getters favorite things around her adopted (11 years and counting) hometown:

Favorite workout? Currently jump rope intervals, kettlebells, and Jill Borega’s on demand MOVE workout series.

Favorite things about Lake Forest or Lake Bluff?

A cheeseburger from The Peanut Gallery, Sophia Steak (double-cut bacon added to the beet salad is *chefs kiss*), and Elawa Farm in the summer.

Sweet or savory?

Sweet. A slice of Ferentino’s cheesecake is my favorite.

What motivates you, both professionally and personally? My mother was a tiger mom. Always do more than your best. I very much took that to heart. In all my endeavors, I have studied with and learned from the best in their field. What is your favorite sound? The sound of my children laughing. Most healing place you’ve ever visited? A tie between Zion National Park and Kauai. Both feature Mother Nature and Earth singing strong, and your vibration wants to be in harmony with it. Favorite music to unwind to? I am currently loving the Native American flute with an ambient backing track, like the sound of rain or wind through the trees. Favorite things about Lake Forest or Lake Bluff? A cheeseburger from The Peanut Gallery, Sophia Steak (double-cut bacon added to the beet salad is *chefs kiss*), and Elawa Farm in the summer. Beach, mountains, or city vacation? Beach. I really want to get to One & Only Le Saint Géran Mauritius soon. Favorite workout? Currently jump rope intervals, kettlebells, and Jill Borega’s on demand MOVE workout series. Coffee or tea? Coffee. All day. The first cup is with collagen protein, then I switch to decaf for the rest of the day. Sweet or savory? Sweet. A slice of Ferentino’s cheesecake is my favorite. Cocktail or mocktail? I don’t drink that often, but if I do, my drink is a Basil Hayden on the rocks. Paper planner or digital? Paper. Best advice you’ve given or received? Trust your intuition. It is trying to tell you something and you should listen. Which three people, living or dead, will you invite to your cocktail party, and what kind of music would you play? Jerry Seinfeld, Lady Gaga, and Roger Federer. I would ask Lady Gaga to curate the evening’s playlist.

Favorite music to unwind to? I am currently loving the Native American flute with an ambient backing track, like the sound of rain or wind through the trees.

EYE FOR DESIGN

Cynthia McCullough, a featured designer in the Infant Welfare Society’s Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens taking place from May 6 through June 4, shares her artful approach to interior design.

Cynthia McCullough has been captivated by interiors for as long as she can remember. Whether moving furniture around her pink gingham childhood bedroom, scouring antique stores, visiting historical societies, or fixating on the miniature floor plans through the windows of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Thorne Rooms, she has spent life firmly immersed in the art of interior design.

Following graduate school, McCullough pioneered a luxury furniture and home accessories store in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood.

There she cultivated an international Rolodex of vendors, collectors, tradesmen, and artisans. It is also where she met her husband Michael, who wandered in looking for a wedding gift. Soon after their own wedding, McCullough decided to sell the successful retail store, opting to focus on growing her family and her namesake residential design firm—which just celebrated its 14th year. Looking for a greater sense of community for their sons, they moved their family to Lake Forest in 2014 and since then McCullough has been happily sharing her creative talent along the North Shore’s leafy coastline.

Known for multi-layered interiors, her rooms are unique, intimate, and warm spaces—transcending both time and trend with little expiration date.

“My clients expect a thoughtful, bespoke interior to serve as a beautiful, enduring, and functional backdrop to their lives,” says McCullough, a featured designer in the Infant Welfare Society’s Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens, taking place from May 6 through June 4. “I try to overdeliver a design that communicates their interests, personal histories, hobbies, and dreams.”

Historic homes are her favorite projects to work on. “I am a sentimental old soul and I love hand-made materials, patina, and imperfections,” she says. “I love the story an old house shares and the new chapters my clients will add.”

Much like a puzzle, older homes require a unique retrofitting—not a one-size-fits-all approach—which intrigues her. “Frequently, historic homes have had multiple owners, all of whom had different aesthetics, tastes, lifestyles, and technologies available at the times of their renovations,” she says.

After assessing a project, McCullough draws out the architectural integrity of the house while balancing components of an updated, modern look and feel that works best for the individual or family’s lifestyle.

She specializes in curating rooms with vintage furniture from various eras. “I’m thrilled when I have a client with heirloom furnishings— legacy pieces from their childhood or grandparents’ homes,” she says. For McCullough, well-made furniture endures and it often acts

ARTS

as a touchstone for the people and places living on in our memories. “I know my grandmother would love that our family sits at her table every holiday or that my sons can feel connected to their grandfather while doing homework at his childhood desk.”

McCullough explains to her clients that investing time and treasure in their interiors creates memories. “Our homes are spaces where we live, work, rest, entertain, learn, and share ourselves with the most precious people in our lives,” she says. “Your home should tell your story to everyone who visits—it’s a living diary.”

HAMMER TIME: DAVID WEBB EDITION

Hindman’s Karina Hammer shares her must-have David Webb pieces coming up at auction this month.

Hindman’s May 16th Important Jewelry auction is full of classic and unique jewelry featuring diamonds, colored stones, and rare antique pieces.

Among an array of jewelry by iconic designers, are the classic designs of revered American jeweler David Webb. Webb is best known for his bold, modern jewelry with yellow gold, colorful gemstones, alluring enamelwork, and exotic animal designs. His creations have been worn by celebrities including Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Helen Mirren. David Webb pieces continue to be produced in New York City today using his more than 40,000 original designs and drawings and remain highly sought-after and collectable.

Karina Hammer, a Hindman jewelry specialist, shares her thoughts on a few of the standout lots being closely watched by the team as they prepare for the sale.

Yellow Gold Bangle Bracelet

Yellow Gold, Diamond, and Enamel Horse Bracelet

Estimate: $35,000–55,000

“David Webb is renowned for these eye-catching animal bracelets. This quintessential example in white enamel is fabulous and whimsical. He has been making animal jewelry since very early on in his career, so this would be a perfect first piece to own if you are new to collecting his designs.”

Diamond, Ruby, and Azurmalachite

Necklace

Estimate: $25,000–35,000

“Lusting for something more colorful? I’d recommend this amazing Azurmalachite necklace, a true showstopper. This is such a powerful piece, and a great illustration of David Webb’s love of bold, vivid gems.”

Estimate: $8,000–12,000

“I would wear a gold cuff bracelet every day. If you don’t have a statement cuff like this in your collection, this would be an easy one to add. Plus, I love the ‘superhero’ vibe it presents!”

Interested in selling at auction? Whether your item is old or antique or contemporary, by David Webb or others, Hindman specialists can provide a complimentary assessment.

Bidding for the May 16th sale will begin at 10 a.m. CST and will be available in-person at Hindman’s Chicago saleroom and online via the Hindman Digital Bid Room. Additional information about the auction can be found at: hindmanauctions. com/auctions/1187-Important-Jewelry.

Yellow Gold and Diamond Necklace

Estimate: $10,000–20,000

“Looking for a classic gold necklace with a little more edge? Look no further than this linked yellow gold and diamond necklace. It would pair perfectly with a white collared shirt or dressing up a black dress.”

Jade, Diamond and Lapis Ear Clips

Estimate: $7,000–9,000

“These vibrant earrings are another excellent display of Webb’s work. The contrast of translucent jade and opaque lapis lazuli is archetypal of Webb’s stone pairings in his jewelry.”

THE POWER OF LISTENING

Sports psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo says the best thing parents can do for kids who may be struggling is to listen.

Studies have shown that post-COVID there’s been an increase in the number of children and teens who are struggling with mental health issues. A recent survey of students specifically in Lake Forest shows the number of students feeling sad or depressed jumped from 28 percent in 2011 to 42 percent in 2021. Over the same time period, the percentage of students who contemplated suicide increased from 16 to 22 percent, and 10 percent of students made a suicide attempt in 2021.

While medications can be effective in treating the symptoms of mental health problems, Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, the Lake Forest-based sports psychologist, and founder of Elevive, says the key for parents of children who are dealing with mental health issues is to ensure they and their children have the skills and the training to avoid listening to the thousands of negative thoughts that race through their minds every day.

“The solution might not be what parents think. Instead of giving them advice, just listen and allow them the space so your children can feel heard and seen,” Lombardo says. “This is often harder than it looks or seems, so parents need to work on themselves—the more they stay out of the psychological Red Zone, the better parent they can be.”

Dr. Lombardo is the author of the best-selling book, Get Out of the Red Zone. She describes the psychological Red Zone as, “not a place but a head space,” when people experience high levels of stress or what psychologists call distress. Children and young adults are not immune from experiencing the Red Zone, where they start clinging to the negative and false thoughts in their heads instead of the more positive, truthful thoughts.

Parents, Lombardo says, can play a critical role in helping kids avoid the Red Zone, and it’s important parents have the tools to help their kids in situations where stress can be a big factor. This is particularly vital in an era where parents are financially and emotionally invested in their kids’ success. Parents have their own Red Zones, too.

While physical training is important—especially for athletes—Lombardo says mental training is just as critical, and both parents and children need to have the tools to mentally train.

“Once we give parents some training, it’s very useful in helping them better support their children,” she says. “Parents experience high levels of stress, and not

just parents of athletes. It could be stress related to their kids’ academic performance that leads to the psychological Red Zone and parents not thinking and acting rationally.”

Lombardo says her view of the world is that the majority of people are very good people but that is not always reflected in their behavior because they’re in the Red Zone.

“This gets back to the point about listening,” she says. “The best thing as a parent that you can do is empathize with your child when they don’t do well and support them emotionally. For parents, stress is always hovering, whether it be at work or in our personal lives. It’s a fact of life. Best coping with it requires the tools and discipline to keep it under control.”

Lombardo works with many professional athletes— NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal calls her his “Head Coach for Happiness”—and she says athletes who retire, if they haven’t had a sense of purpose outside of their sport, have a lot of work to do.

“We want to help our children see that sport is part of their lives and there’s a lot they can learn from it that will help them in life,” she says. “Perseverance, teamwork, and overcoming challenges are all valuable skills that will carry them through life.”

But they won’t learn those skills without mind skills training. Lombardo says scientists estimate more than 60,000 thoughts race through our brains every day, and a majority of those thoughts are not objective.

“They are beliefs or interpretations or assumptions. We act on them and a lot of times they’re not even true,” Lombardo says. “What is completely lacking for kids and parents is mind skills training, how to really make the mind work for instead of against you.”

CHOOSE WISELY

In the same way that no one wants to have an illness, no one wants to get divorced. But like finding the right doctor, finding the right divorce attorney is critical to a successful outcome. To get the right fit, there are many things to consider.

Do you want a firm or do you want a person who works alone? Do you want someone who specializes in issues involving children? Do you want someone who’s familiar with small businesses? Do you want someone who understands executive compensation and restricted stock units? Do you want someone who is familiar with each of the judges in the county and can advise you regarding what to expect? Do you want someone who’s able to listen and can help you create a strategy for your family? Do you want someone who can quickly review and understand financial information? Do you want someone who understands retirement assets? Do you want someone who patiently answers your questions? Do you want someone who can write and effectively communicate? Do you want someone who is going to be a fierce and effective advocate in court? Do you want someone who can sit down at a conference table, find a creative solution, and bring

people to the middle?

In my experience, every one of these qualities is important and in fact, you deserve to have nothing less an attorney who has it all.

One of the common misconceptions is that if you you want your divorce to be amicable, you should choose an attorney that does not specialize in trial or litigation. As a result, because you don’t want to go to trial and you don’t want to be involved in litigation, you choose someone with no trial experience. This could end up putting you at a disadvantage.

I have found that having attorney who has the strength and experience to go to trial, when needed, is actually a deterrent to both litigation and trials. Strength changes everything. It’s much more effective to walk into a room to negotiate a settlement and create an amicable resolution if your attorney has the strength and experience to go to trial. You are much less likely to be bullied into a settlement that does not make sense.

Similarly, if you’re focused on child and custody issues, you may choose an attorney who only specializes in those issues and is not as experienced in the financial and property area of divorce. However, once the child issues are resolved, you’ll quickly learn that you need an attorney who has the knowledge and expertise in the financial area to make sure that you and your children are financially set up for success.

Again, just like when you find a new doctor, when choosing your divorce attorney, interview more than one. Ask questions. not only about the one issue that is most important to you, but about each of the areas of divorce. Ask them about their strategy and notice whether they have listened to and responded to your questions and concerns. Find someone that will be pleasant to deal with, and that you feel is worthy of your trust.

The divorce process is much easier when you choose the right divorce attorney to guide you through the process.

SPRING GREEN PESTO WITH LINGUINI

words, photography, and recipe by Monica Kass Rogers

For a quick pasta sauce, pesto is one of my favorites. Although often made with basil, changing up the herb component brings bright variety to the garlicky sauce. This version—with parsley, cilantro, lemon, and pistachio, is a delicious combination. As with any pesto, you can add a bit more (or less) garlic to alter the pungency.

I like this pesto tossed with linguini, but it also works well with gemelli, fusilli, cavatappi, or other little pasta spirals which cling tightly to the sauce in

serves: 6

INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb. linguini

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 large bunch parsley, stems discarded, leaves packed to make 2 cups

• 1 large bunch cilantro, stems discarded, leaves packed to make 2 cups

• 2 c loves garlic (three if you like it extra pungent)

• 2/3 cup pistachio nuts, shells discarded

• Zest from 2 fresh lemons

• 3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

• ½ cup extra virgin olive oil, plus more as needed

• 1 heaping cup f reshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano (parmesan) cheese, plus more for serving

• Salt & pepper to taste

their corkscrew curls. The recipe makes a full two-cups of pesto, enough for two meals. (1 cup of pesto per 1 pound of pasta.) Refrigerate, or freeze the rest of the pesto for round two.

Pesto literally means “pounded”—a reference to the old-world method of pounding the nuts and herbs into paste with a mortar and pestle. But for quicker results, a food processor is my preferred method. Choose freshest possible organic paarsley and cilantro, finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, and extra virgin olive oil for best flavor.

Method

1. Heat large kettle of water with 1 tsp salt to boiling over high heat. Combine parsley and cilantro leaves with pistachio nuts, garlic and lemon zest in a food processor. Pulse to break down into small bits, scraping sides of food processor bowl. Add lemon juice and olive oil and pulse again. Add parmesan and pulse once more. Stir and add more olive oil as needed to make a rich sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

2. Boil the pasta in salted water until al dente. Drain. Toss cooked linguini with half of the pesto, adding a bit more olive oil as needed to ensure noodles are coated well. Serve immediately topped with extra grated parmesan, and a little extra pesto, as desired.

StarryNight

The

Associate Board

of the Lake Forest Open

Lands Association will host its annual spring outdoor fundraiser, Cattails & Cocktails, under the stars on Saturday, May 20, at the Mellody Farm Nature Preserve.

words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography provided by Ian McLeod

“THIS IS OUR FLAGSHIP EVENT and we’d like everyone to have the chance to come and experience it,” says Lake Forest’s Marie Woods, president of The Associate Board of the Lake Forest Open Lands Association (LFOLA), of their annual fundraiser, Cattails & Cocktails. “We have so much fun planning it—it doesn’t even really feel like work.”

This year’s Cattails and Cocktails, “Starry Night,” will take place on Saturday, May 20, at the Mellody Farm Nature Preserve.

“We came up with the theme so organically,” Woods explains. “This event is always outdoors, under a cleartop tent, and it’s fun to dream about how we can bring the outside in. Cattails is from 6 to 10 p.m. so sunset occurs midway through the event. Guests have the pleasure of enjoying the sunset over the prairie, while the second half of the evening is spent under the stars. It’s really magical.” The event is being co-chaired by Lake Forest residents Courtney Magliochetti and Michelle Taubensee.

LFOLA is an independently funded conservation and educational organization devoted to the acquisition and stewardship of Lake Forest’s natural landscapes,

and to ensuring all generations have a meaningful, lasting connection to nature and the land. The Associate Board, composed of 34 members, supports the efforts of LFOLA’s Board of Directors.

Cattails & Cocktails Starry Night will feature live music by “Magoo,” an open bar, and a live auction. This event raises critical funds for educational programs and other initiatives that are part of LFOLA’s mission.

“Our primary role as an Associate Board is to increase awareness of our programming and what LFOLA is doing in the community,” Woods says, who herself has been a board member for the last five years. “We have a number of young families on our board and engaging them is so important. It’s never too early to start teaching children about philanthropy and the importance of land conservation.”

To this end, the Associate Board launched Cattails & Kiddies as a way of incorporating children into their fundraising initiatives.

“We started this last year and it was so successful,” Woods explains. “One of our board members—Kat Taubensee—is an art teacher and she plans the most incredible projects for the children who attend.” The Associate Board hosts two sessions of Cattails & Kiddies, where youngsters enjoy a fun activity-filled spring

morning at Mellody Farm Nature Preserve as a precursor to the event. (This year, Cattails & Kiddies took place on April 29.) Participants hike through the preserve, make spring centerpieces and create one-of-akind art pieces that are displayed and auctioned off at Cattails & Cocktails.

Guests of Cattails & Cocktails will have the option to purchase a seated dinner in one of 12 tents lining the perimeter of the nature preserve, or a general admission ticket to a buffet dinner under the main tent. Food for both will be prepared by Belvedere Events & Banquets.

“The more intimate dining experience was born out of Covid when we were brainstorming how to host our fundraiser and still comply with all of the required safety regulations,” Woods says. “But it was such a special way to experience Cattails & Cocktails that we continue to offer it.”

One can support Cattails & Cocktails in a number of ways—from attending the event to sponsoring various aspects of the evening. A special note of appreciation to our lead sponsor, PCA. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the “Out of this World Bar,” the

“Stardust Flowers and Décor,” the “Over the Moon” Welcome Tent and Drink, and everything in between. If you are unable to attend, you may choose bid in the silent auction that will be available online one week prior to the event.

“The greater our outreach, the more our community will make the connection between our wide-open spaces and the importance of preserving them,” Woods adds. “With seven preserves, more than 1,000 acres, and 16 hiking trails—we have a lot worth caring for.”

LAKE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATH-

LETES Lainey O’Neil and Isabelle Chong, separated by the length of a tennis racket, sit at a table in Lake Bluff on a spring day, recalling some of the activities they had dabbled in as kiddos.

Chong, shy and polite, swam and played the violin, flute, and piano, not all at the same time. O’Neil, ebullient and polite, danced and played soccer.

“I tried karate, too,” Chong, a 5-foot-8 junior, adds. “I got a yellow belt.”

“So did I!” O’Neil, a 5-8 senior, blurts, her eyes suddenly stuck in unblinking mode.

But both moved on from the martial art at a young age, along with their other outlets, and opted to focus instead on belting yellow objects.

Tennis balls, specifically.

Smart choice. O’Neil and Chong emerged as the most successful duo in Lake Forest High School girls tennis history, capturing consecutive Class 2A state doubles titles in 2021-2022. Only six other prep pairs had netted such back-to-back feats since the Illinois state series in girls tennis began in 1972.

O’Neil/Chong didn’t lose a match in the 2021 season. They lost once in the regular season in 2022, and then strung together six frighteningly easy victories at the state meet last fall, each match lasting slightly longer than a typical pre-match warm-up session does.

The scores, in order: 6-1, 6-0; 6-0, 6-1; 6-2, 6-0; 6-0, 6-1; 6-0, 6-1; and—in the final versus Naperville North’s Brooke Coffman/ Gabby Lee, 6-1, 6-2.

Not fair.

“Their dominance was remarkable,” says LFHS girls tennis coach Denise Murphy, who also coached the program’s only other state championship doubles team, Maddie Lipp/Christina Zordani, in 2012. “They played with such confidence, with such flow. Lainey started out as the hunter, the attacker at the net, with steady Isabelle setting her up from the baseline. Then, before their last season together, each decided to work on the ‘B-side’ of her game, determined to become a better all-around player.

“It got to the point,” Murphy adds, “where they were setting each other up for winners.”

Like just about every varsity hopeful in the state, O’Neil and Chong entered high school eyeing a slot as a singles player. In 2019, when O’Neil was a freshman and Chong was an eighthgrader, Lake Forest High School’s tennis squad featured reigning Class 2A state singles champion Kiley Rabjohns, who would win another state singles crown that fall. Her sister, then-freshman Autumn Rabjohns, would earn the nod at No. 2 singles and, two years later, finish runner-up in singles at the state meet.

O’Neil played No. 3 doubles on varsity but did not make Murphy’s state-series contingent in 2019.

“Lainey was clearly a high-level player, fully capable of succeeding in singles at state,” Murphy recalls. “I remember a conversation I had with her after her freshman season. She asked me, ‘What can I do?’ Lainey was already thinking about the next season, about doing whatever she could do to make our next team another strong one.”

The talented Chong arrived at LFHS in the fall of 2020. She, too, couldn’t supplant either of the Rabjohns sisters in singles. Murphy paired O’Neil with Chong in doubles one day and liked what she saw, immediately.

“You know what both of them told me?” Murphy says. “Each

said, ‘Put me wherever you need me (in the lineup).’ They cared about the team, not themselves. I love that mindset.”

O’Neil/Chong won a sectional championship as first-year doubles partners but didn’t get to play a single point at the state tourney. Nobody in Illinois did, in fact, because of a racket-less foe: Covid-19.

They crafted their spectacular, undefeated season the following fall, culminating it with a scintillating 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Hinsdale Central’s Sophia Kim/Katie Dollens in the state doubles final.

“I was in shock after we had won,” the University of Richmondbound O’Neil says.

“The match ended, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, this is crazy!’” Chong says. “Honestly, I did not think we’d be able to pull it off.”

But Murphy had an inkling they would.

“It was touch and go at times, but they kept their cool in clutch moments—that’s why they won that match,” she says. “Huge, such a huge win, for them. I was so proud of how they competed and how they carried themselves.”

As reigning state doubles champs in 2022, O’Neil/Chong absorbed one regular-season setback to a Deerfield duo, shrugged it off, donned figurative blinders, and galloped emphatically to another state title.

“I was more nervous during our second state tournament, probably because of the high expectations,” O’Neil admits. “I felt pressure in every match.”

“I didn’t feel any pressure,” Chong counters.

“Opposites attract, right?” a smiling O’Neil deduces.

These opposites are equally grateful—for their parents (Dan and Kristin O’Neil; Simon and Sarah Chong), for their teammates, for each other, and for their coaches (Murphy, varsity assistant Corky Leighton, and volunteer assistants Jeff Daube and Susie Davis).

“My parents have always been super supportive, plus they let me quit soccer,” O’Neil says. “Our coaches … they’re truly good people. They weren’t just concerned about our growth as tennis players; they also helped us develop as good leaders, as good teammates.”

Murphy will never forget the brilliance O’Neil and Chong displayed during too many points to count, from the way they constructed them to the way they finished them—with authority most of the time, with deftness when the point called for it.

“I’ll also remember the way Lainey and Isabelle communicated during matches,” Murphy says. “Lainey was the talker, Isabelle the calm one. But sometimes the best form of communication took place in between points, and without words. They would use eye contact or a racket tap, or Lainey would slap her own leg to get motivated or turn to Isabelle, who was about to serve, and give her a quick fist pump before turning around to face their opponents.

“They,” the coach adds, “were great together.”

And they won together.

Often.

Be The “Early Bird”

Parents of High Schoolers, listen Up: the “worm” metaphor is true.

ply means laying the tracks so that the train can depart—no matter the speed or route the train takes.

By starting early, you are building-in time for:

• Unexpected changes to your student’s schedule. Is one semester busier for your student than the other? Will they want to take off tutoring during school holidays? Will staggering tutoring make it easier to commit to?

• Meaningful relationship-building between your student and their tutor, which always increases score growth and improves skills like confidence, grit, and problem-solving.

• Actual, real, long-lasting learning. We believe in a skills-based approach to instruction. We teach our students how to use commas in a list so that they can successfully use commas in a list for the rest of their life. Will they also correctly answer ACT/SAT questions about using commas in a list? Absolutely. It’s the ultimate win-win.

All parents know the uphill battle of trying to get their teenaged child to do … pretty much anything. The underdeveloped teenage brain has always had a lot to contend with: school, extracurriculars, and the ever-shifting “politics” of romance and friendship.

Add in preparing for the ACT or SAT, especially as some colleges are going test-optional, and it’s no wonder why the topic of ACT/SAT tutoring may earn parents the same dead-eyed stare as when you struggle to pronounce “chipotle” or “cheugy.”

You know it’s important for your student to score well on the ACT/SAT. You want your child to have the best chances of getting into the college or university of their choice. And while a few schools are going test-optional, the best course of action by far is still for your student to score well on the ACT or SAT and submit those scores (to set them apart from the thousands of other straight A students who do not submit test scores).

But where do you start? How do you convince your teenager to take test preparation seriously?

Well, first, you don’t go into battle alone. You give us a call. Or, for the millennial parent who hates phone calls, you can use the chat feature on our website, which is manned by an actual human.

Our amazing directors will give you the information you need to get your child to come in and take our free diagnostic exam. Then, capitalizing on the “how did I do on the diagnostic?” cliffhanger, you’ll come back for a free score report analysis, in which we’ll walk through your student’s strengths and challenges and propose a customized tutoring program based on their needs.

But most importantly, you start early. You start so early it may even seem a little ridiculous.

If your student plans to take the ACT in the fall of their senior year, why would you start tutoring in the spring of their sophomore year? Because last school year, students who started tutoring with us in the spring of their sophomore nearly tripled their score growth.

To be clear, starting early doesn’t mean your student is doing nothing but tutoring in their limited free time. Starting early sim-

• Taking multiple practice tests. Academic Approach has 20+ years of in-house data that proves a strong correlation between the number of practice tests students take with us and improved scores.

• Selecting the right test date. Right now, this is particularly important since the SAT is changing to a digital, adaptive test form in Spring 2024. If your student wants to take the paperand-pencil SAT, they must take the SAT this fall.

What if you’ve got a straight-A kid that is a rock star test-taker? Do they need to start as early? Do they need tutoring at all?

In short, yes. To state the obvious: since Academic Approach was founded in 2001, we have never encountered a student that has not benefitted from instruction, no matter how strong their grades or test scores were.

And frankly, today it is more important than ever to ensure your student is getting individualized instruction. Despite how much we’re all tired of hearing about it, COVID-19 learning loss impacted all students. We can attest from our experience that students are coming in with more gaps in their knowledge than ever before.

To address these learning gaps, we also offer academic tutoring. If you don’t think your student needs ACT/SAT preparation yet, seriously consider academic tutoring in the meantime. The shorter the ACT/SAT program, the less time there will be to address skill gaps, so it will be even more important to ensure your student is caught up.

Do your student, and yourself, a favor by planning ahead and starting early. We understand how busy and stressed you (and your student) may be, and that the topic of standardized testing may be overwhelming or possibly even set your teeth on edge. We get it.

The good news? Make one phone (or robot outreach) and we’ll take it from there.

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE

VASER 4-D HI DEFINITION LIPOSCULPTURE PLUS RENUVION

Liposuction has been in existence for close to thirty years. It continues to be refined and improved. Two years ago I discussed Hi-Definition Liposculpture. Since that time I’ve performed hundreds of procedures. Results have been excellent with significant improvement over past procedures. It has become a true art form where the underlying anatomy is contoured, sculpted, and enhanced. Like every procedure, over time one realizes that there are some limitations. The single biggest limitation in achieving the desired result is the status of the overlying skin. More specifically the level of the skin’s elasticity. In the younger patient where the skin tone is better, results are more predictable and consistent. In the older patient, if there is significant laxity of skin, the procedure may be combined with skin reduction or excision. It is that middle group of patients who present the most challenge. Obviously, most patients want the best results with the least invasive method. For this group, I’m now combining Vaser Hi-Definition Liposculpture to contour and sculpt the body with a minimally invasive treatment called Renuvion.

Renuvion is a cosmetic technology combining the unique properties of the helium plasma with a proprietary form of radiofrequency energy. The trick is always to sufficiently heat up the deeper tissues to promote collagen tightening and elasticity without burning the overlying skin. Renuvion has a very shallow depth of penetration. It has a dual thermal effect where it provides unique heating with near-instantaneous tissue cooling. The delivery of energy beneath the skin and thru the helium plasma allows 360-degree energy application to all desired tissues in the subdermal space. The fibroseptal network beneath the skin can be effectively heated to promote contraction and tightening of the overlying skin. The full effect of this treatment can take up to six months to see.

So basically, tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated and Vaser ultrasound is introduced to emulsify the fat. Liposuction is performed if need be and the Renuvion is introduced to promote skin tightening.

To see if you are a candidate for this procedure a consultation and an exam are required. As with any surgical procedure risks and possible complications will be discussed.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

It’s an overcast day in late March and Elaine Madansky is minding the farm. Originally part of the A. Watson Armour estate in Lake Forest, this 16-acre “gentleman’s” parcel and early 20th century farm complex known as Elawa Farm is a living laboratory of how Madansky and others believe we should grow our food more sustainably. Seeding in the greenhouse started a few weeks prior, with planting in the fields to resume shortly. Meanwhile, garlic is already poking up, along with perennials that will be in full bloom by Mother’s Day. “I still need to buy some supplies to get ready, but we’ve already recruited everyone we need for the season so I’m done with that ... check!” explains Madansky, a North Shore native who left the corporate world to pursue the job of her dreams— managing the 1917 Elawa Farm property that produces food for its weekly garden market and learning kitchen as well as Community Supported Agriculture, wholesale customers, and donations to families that are food insecure. Three interns will be joining Madansky and her Field Production and Distribution Supervisor this year along with one lucky “apprentice” who will shadow her and learn more about sustainable farming. For Madansky, who began her career in marketing research, most recently working for the Mars Wrigley candy company, the

education component is one of her favorite parts of the new gig. “I not only teach several formal classes at Elawa related to sustainable growing methods, but also continuously do informal handson training with my team and volunteers,” says Madansky, who earned a degree in sustainable agriculture from the College of Lake County. Now in her fifth growing season with Elawa Farm, Madansky is on a mission to raise awareness not only about the incredible food that is being produced there but the need for consumers to better support sustainable, organic farming. “There’s a real opportunity to continue to educate people on the reasons to eat organic produce and pastureraised meat in order to influence changes in purchasing behavior,” she says. Ultimately, Madansky would like to see the government support smaller organic farms as much as what she calls “big conventional ag.” Until then, she’s spreading the word one person at a time, and through all the work she’s now doing at Elawa Farm—inviting the community to come check out this sustainable foodie paradise in the savannas. “We’re here and we are a resource.”
