PUBLISHER’S NOTE

This month’s issue is all about new takes on some old classics. First, we look at surfing on Lake Michigan and how a traditional pastime for beach bums is turned on its head in the Midwest. (Hint: Expect to trade bronze skin for icicles in your beard.)

Next, writer Ann Marie Scheidler visits two beloved retail institutions at critical moments in their respective histories. Forest Bootery, a second-generation business, just celebrated its 70th anniversary—an unbelievable feat for owners Cara and Cristina Garrison, who worked there for their dad since they were students. And many locals were just about the mourn the loss of Smith’s Men’s Store—a fixture since 1937—when the sudden news came that it would be given a second life under enthusiastic new owners Trey Gonzales and Kip Helverson. The partners discuss their journey from the city to Lake Forest and their vision for the shop.

In Giving Back, we preview an upcoming event dedicated to the style of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The celebration of this timeless icon, hosted by Fashion Matters Chicago, helps middle school girls via scholarships to Sewjourners Sewing Camp (which hosts programs in Lake Forest and Wisconsin).

If you have some room in your calendar for a dose of culture, may we recommend turning to our Buzz page for info on Kerri Sherman’s appearance at the Lake Forest Library? Her photos of a recent trip to Cuba are a fresh take on a beautiful place that feels frozen in time.

From cover to cover, the message is clear: honor the past, but embrace the future.

Enjoy the pictures, and good reading.

Talk of the Town

VISUAL ESCAPES

Trade the dreary winter blues for dreamy coastal vibes without ever having to leave town. On February 25, New Orleans-based artist Elise Allen comes to The Gallery in Lake Forest for her debut show, “Ebb & Flow.” Curated in collaboration with art director (and Lake Forest resident) Vickie Marasco, the collection includes Venetian plaster and acrylic paintings, many of which are “influenced by the beach and seascapes” for an effect that “instills a sense of serenity and calm.” Allen, who studied at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, and The Finishing School in Floral Park, New York, began her career as a professional decorative artist, specializing in faux finishes. She later worked as an assistant to New York muralist Andrew Tedesco and was mentored by celebrity pop artist Ashley Longshore before making a natural transition to fine art. In 2014, nine original pieces commissioned by Pottery Barn sold out, bringing her profile to a new level.

Viewers of the show can expect abstract work that plays with texture. Pieces are intensive labors of love, involving up to a hundred layers of plaster and paint. “We are grouping by colors,” explains Allen. In addition to tranquil blues, she says, “there are bright, fun colorful pieces with hot pink, orange, and lime green; a dark group with tans, taupe, black, and white; one with lavenders and purples… It’s kind of a transition, which is why it’s called ebb and flow. A lot of my work comes from trial and error, so it’s constantly evolving and I’m always trying new, different things.”

The show is free and open to the public; food and wine will be served on opening night from 5 to 7 p.m. For more information visit thegallerylf.com.

Meet the Author

In her debut novel, Minor Dramas & Other Catastrophes, Minneapolis-based author Kathleen West pokes fun at the privileged bubble that envelops the fictional town of Liston Heights. The book has been received by critics as a smart take on the follies and foibles of micro-managing parents, overworked teachers, and the children who are caught in the middle. On Tuesday, February 11 at 6 p.m., West—a veteran middle and high-school teacher with plenty of personal experience from which to mine—will make an appearance at Lake Forest Book Store to talk about her work. Refreshments will be served and copies of the book will be available for signing. For more information, visit lakeforestbookstore.com.

Her Heart is in Havana

Last September, local photographer Kerri Sherman published Cuba Captured , a coffee table book full of colorful images from her recent travels to Havana. Her vivid street photography—produced under the tutelage of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Alex Garcia—captures everything from boxers to back alley dominoes players. On February 6 at 7 p.m., Lake Forest Library will host Sherman as she discusses her experiences abroad, as well the personal process of distilling the essence of this exotic locale. Enjoy a chance to chat with the artist and absorb the brilliant colors and textures of her photography. For more information, visit kerrisherman.com or lakeforestlibrary.org.

CHANGING LIVES

If you struggle from major depression, anxiety, or PTSD and haven’t found antidepressants and other medications to be effective, or if the stress of the holiday season usually worsens your depression, there may be a solution that can get you relief in just a few days. I’m Dr. Bal Nandra, Medical Director of IV Solution and Ketamine Centers and I want to tell you how ketamine infusions can change your life in a few days.

Recent FDA data supports ketamine infusion therapy treatment for depression, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and even chronic pain and migraines. As part of this revolution, IV Solution is the first and most experienced private medical facility to offer this treatment in Chicago, offering customized therapy in a confidential setting with anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and skilled staff.

Supported by clinical studies, many from the National Institute of Mental Health, ketamine has been called “the most significant advancement in mental health in half a century.” It has been shown to be up to 80 percent effective in relieving treatment resistant depression (TRD), among other conditions.

Developed in the 1960s as an anesthetic drug, ketamine has been used to successfully treat depression for more than 10 years. It has a safe profile when administered by an experienced anesthesiologist. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA cell receptors, which raise levels of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Ketamine also remaps and stimulates growth of nerve elements for long-term relief of clinical depression and essentially does a “reboot” of your brain.

IV Solution is also now proud to offer the stellate ganglion block (SGB) for the treatment of PTSD in both veterans and others. This procedure is performed by one of the world’s foremost doctors and pioneers of SGB and can eliminate your symptoms almost immediately after one injection.

Ketamine is effective within hours to days with minimal side effects, as opposed to oral antidepressants which are only effective in about 40 percent of patients, take a month or longer to work, and have many undesirable side effects. Most of our patients have improvement after their first or second ketamine

infusion and feel very relaxed while they are receiving the treatment. Many patients, with the guidance of their psychiatrist or physician, may be able to decrease or even eliminate their other medications after the treatments.

After the series of six 45-minute infusions for depression done over a period of 2 to 3 weeks, patients typically report relief of symptoms for many weeks, and months, after which time booster infusions may be scheduled as needed. Patients can inquire directly for the treatment or can be referred by their physician or mental health professional.

Chicago Cubs national anthem singer and anti-bullying activist, John Vincent, is one of our most outspoken advocates for ketamine treatment. He sums it up well by stating, “Before ketamine, I felt like I was standing in front of a wall, and ketamine has brought me a ladder to get me over that wall. It’s changed my entire life. I feel alive again and am so grateful.”

IV Solutions and Ketamine Centers of Chicago is located at 712 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. For more information, call 844-9-IV-MEDS (948-6337) or visit chicagoivsolution.com or ketaminechicago.com to watch and listen to our many patient testimonials, news, and radio stories.

A decidedly Midwestern surf culture thrives on Lake Michigan.

THE THIRD COAST It’s

a weekday afternoon in early December and Jim Mallardo is standing on the shores of Lake Michigan, armored in a 6mm wetsuit with gloves. The sky and water are a distressed blue-gray, like the contours of a contusion, and the 47-degree weather is not doing any favors for what little of his skin is exposed to the elements.

Despite these conditions, Mallardo, 47, spends the next hour and a half braving the cold and surfing on his 12-foot YOLO stand-up paddle (SUP) board—the same one he used when he first learned to surf on the South Side in his mid-thirties. He needs to report to his job at Asylum Skate Park in Lake Bluff later in the afternoon, but—as any serious surfer will attest—his plans are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

“If you see waves, you drop whatever you’re doing,” he says.

Here in the Midwest, ‘tis the season for saying, “Surf’s up.” Throughout fall and winter, hearty adventurers in and around the North Shore journey the 150-mile stretch from Chicago to Sheboygan in hopes of catching waves.

It’s said that SoCal surf culture trickled its way inland during the 1960s, but finding anyone to bear witness to those midcentury heydays isn’t an easy task. Ralph Ruffolo, 68, can personally trace it as far back as 1981, when he opened Southport Bikes and Boards in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The business, which he still operates today, started as a windsurfing equipment shop that served customers from as far south as Chicago. As the sport’s popularity declined over the years, a small (but steadily growing) group of surfers took advantage of the empty waters.

And in case you’re wondering, the brutal weather does not provide a thrill or adrenaline rush—rather, it’s a bitter pill that

FOREST & BLUFF 48

comes with the territory.

“It’s all a function of the weather patterns,” says Ruffolo. “Right now, north winds bring waves to our side of the lake. We don’t get the same swell in the summertime.”

Mallardo says his preferred surfing conditions are when there’s unadulterated sunshine or during snowfall—a gray day like today is mediocre at best. The lowest temperature he’s personally endured is 32 degrees, which provides him with a window of a few hours before it’s time to tap out. “When it’s real cold, things get kind of slippery, so I tend to wait in the water with my board upside down, otherwise the surface will freeze up.”

Paul Geiger lives on the North Shore and has been surfing for eight years. A native of Hilo, Hawaii, the 52-year-old attorney admits that he was originally turned off to the idea. “My brother and I were competitive surfers,” he says. “My parents wouldn’t let me go to school on the West Coast because they knew I would never go to class, so I landed at Loyola Lake Shore. I tried surfing here in the ’80s, but coming from Hawaii, it just wasn’t that interesting.”

Despite his initial lack of the enthusiasm, he couldn’t get away from his roots. At his home in the Chicago suburbs, a Hawaiian flag beckons from the front of a sprawling, sun-drenched ranch. A vast collection of surf and SUP boards hang from the ceilings of various rooms. The place drips with Aloha vibes. And when the forecast is right, Geiger packs his gear into a 2016 Ford Transit 350—its rear windows plastered with stickers—and heads for the nearest beach.

Geiger runs with a diverse crew of locals, including a teacher at Lake Forest High School and a former fire chief from Northbrook—all bound by a shared love of the sport. Some days they’ll surf at Greenwood Beach in Evanston; other days involve a two-hour trek to Sheboygan. Together, they’re a far cry from the stereotypical gang of delinquent beach bums, and for good

reason: surfing the lake is not a cheap or casual endeavor.

“You need the equipment to get started,” says Geiger. It requires wetsuits, other cold weather gear, and different boards for different weather conditions. When surfing locally, Geiger often substitutes the boards of his youth for a larger SUP board.

“The waves are typically smaller and weaker here because it’s fresh water,” he explains. “There’s a lot less buoyancy. You don’t have waves coming from deep water and hitting a shallow reef, so they’re not that powerful. Surfing big boards with flotation and stability gives you an advantage.”

Mallardo concurs. On this winter day in Kenosha, the waves aren’t very big. He laments that the rising water levels have made conditions unpredictable over the last two years. But he’s been able to ride two barrels in the past, and every once in a while, he’ll see regular sets comes in with 5- or 6-foot waves.

For better or worse, he’s not the only one who takes notice.

“I’ve seen more of an interest in surfing in the six years that I’ve been here,” he says. “Where I used to be maybe one of two or three people on the water, you’ll now get upward of 20 on a single day.” Mallardo would know, given the number of hours he’s logged on the beach. This summer, he’ll operate SUP Kenosha, a paddle board rental business that will offer a limited number of beginner surf lessons.

“Most people don’t want to see their personal surf spots get blown up,” he admits. But he remembers that he, too, had to start somewhere, and doesn’t particularly enjoy the thought of being territorial about something he genuinely loves.

True, Lake Michigan will never be Maui, but it’s not trying to be. Midwest surfing is its own animal, and if you ask Mallardo, he’ll half-joke that it comes with benefits you won’t find elsewhere:

“At least you’ll never have to deal with sharks or other dangerous stuff in the water.”

IF THE SHOE FITS

hen sisters Cristina and Cara Garrison invited their father to breakfast at Highland Park’s Country Kitchen more than 20 years ago to discuss taking over running his Forest Bootery store, they had no idea they’d be at the helm when the Lake Forest icon celebrated its 70th anniversary.

“I can tell you straight that we didn’t see this coming,” says Cara with a laugh. “In fact, if it weren’t for my husband—who was my boyfriend at the time—pushing Cristina and I to give the business a go and continue the legacy,

Wwho knows what might have happened.”

Cristina and Cara acquired Forest Bootery from their father in 1996, a long-standing business he purchased two decades earlier (that had opened in 1949).

“My dad had part ownership in a shoe store in Yorktown (in the Western Suburbs),” Cara says. “He realized he wanted to have his own business and began to travel around to see what might be available in different suburbs. When he arrived in Lake Forest, he knew the business had to be here.”

Outbidding an offer on the table, Paul Garrison purchased one of the two local shoe stores in Lake Forest at the time and renamed it the Forest Bootery. “I remember my mom sitting at the kitchen table tracing rolls of masking tape to create the logo that we still use for the store today,” Cara says.

While Cristina and Cara both worked at the Forest Bootery growing up, they didn’t set out to follow in their father’s footsteps.

“Cristina went to school for fashion merchandising and I wanted an art degree,” Cara says. “It wasn’t easy working at the store. Dad’s sales staff was made up of serious shoe guys who had a set way of doing things. I still remember the day my register was off by one penny and the store manager was very upset. So, I quit. It’s kind of funny how things come full circle.”

Without hesitation, Paul ultimately agreed to sell the business to his daughters. At the weekly sales meeting following their memorable Country Kitchen breakfast, Paul introduced the sisters to the sales team as their new bosses without any warning.

“And then he left the meeting,” says Cara. “Cristina and I had no idea what to say or what to do, but we figured it out.”

Not surprised by their father’s “sink or swim approach,” Cristina and Cara dug right in. They worked hard, learned a lot, remodeled the store, and updated the product mix. When the

Outdoorsman in Lake Forest closed its doors in 2000, the Forest Bootery expanded into outerwear. In 2005, their success led them to open a second location in Libertyville that Cristina now oversees. In 2010, the sisters brought in women’s clothing and accessories to enhance their offerings even further.

“We’ve had to reinvent ourselves over the last 10 years,” adds Cristina, explaining the hardest part of what she and Cara do is wear many different hats as business owners. “The retail market isn’t easy and you have to be willing to accept that and adapt when you can. Introducing women’s clothing was part of this. We wanted to give our customers a chance for a one-stop-shop of clothes, shoes, and accessories.”

On the flip side, Cristina and Cara have enjoyed supporting young fashion designers before the national chains discovered them. “It’s been fantastic to watch brands like Jon Josef go on to be a huge business, knowing that we had them when no one else did,” says Cara.

While the future is never certain, Cristina and Cara do see potential for their own children to one day take over the business. “We definitely have that sales gene in our family,” Cara says, who loves watching her high school-aged daughter, Cleo, and her niece, Pia, work at the Lake Forest location on Sundays. “We call them our Sunday dynamo. They might be quiet and shy at home, but they have this confidence that comes out on the store floor.”

As the sisters celebrate 70 years of hard work, they believe there could be 70 more if they keep some of their father’s adages close to heart.

“Dad’s mantra was to always treat your customers right and to always try to have what they are looking for,” Cara says. “At this point, so many of our customers have become our friends and this is what we’re all about. If we weren’t running this business, I’m not sure anyone else could.”

Trey Gonzales and Kip Helverson keep the legacy of the historic Smith’s Men’s Store alive as its new owners—and stewards.

ike most things in life, timing is everything. And no one seems to know this better than Trey Gonzales and Kip Helverson, the new co-owners of Smith’s Men’s Store in Lake Forest.

FASHIONABLY ON TIME L

“The Chamber [of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff] announced that we were reopening Smith’s Men’s Store just as stories were circulating about other businesses in town closing,” Gonzales says. “I think our news gave people hope that local retail is viable.”

Gonzales and Helverson have always loved Lake Forest and decided to relocate from the city in 2017. “The feel of Lake Forest is much more pastoral than some other communities,” Helverson says. “It’s almost resort-like where parts of it seem rural with all of its land and natural beauty.”

Just as the pair was settling into life in the Stanley Anderson home they purchased, a friend—knowing the duo was interested in taking on an entrepreneurial project—suggested they take a look at a listing about Smith’s Men’s Store being for sale—a historic business opened originally in Lake Forest’s Market Square in 1937.

“Trey and I are tapped into a number of local Facebook pages and saw how much the community wanted Smith’s to continue,” Helverson explains. “We talked about whether running Smith’s was something we could do and we decided it was.”

As Gonzales and Helverson were in discussions to purchase the store with John Tadel, who had owned Smith’s since 1987, Tadel posted “store closing” signs in the windows.

“Our plan was to keep the store open as we transitioned in,” says Gonzales. “But it was John who encouraged us to close it temporarily, just as he had done after Brooks Smith closed the store briefly in 1987.”

Once the sale was final, Gonzales and Helverson got to work, beginning with a total restoration of the store itself. “Our design inspiration for the space was a classic navy-blue blazer and khakis,” says Gonzales, who left his job managing a customlighting showroom at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago to oversee Smith’s. (Helverson, who is a regular contributor to the store, continues to work full-time in software technology.) “We wanted the store to feel fresh but familiar. We’ve hung pictures around our space as reminders of the store’s rich history and we’ve kept John close to us as an advisor. He’s been an amazing mentor, sharing his vendors and introducing us to his longstanding clients. We’ve learned so much from him operationally.”

Gonzales and Helverson, who were attracted to Lake Forest because of the importance the city places on historic preservation, also made the deliberate decision not to rename the store. “We moved to Lake Forest because we were attracted to it. We didn’t move here to change it,” Helverson adds. “When a customer buys something at Smith’s, it means something special because it came from ‘Smith’s Men’s Store.’ It means something to Lake Forest and Lake Bluff.”

Smith’s continues to offer brands customers have come to expect, while introducing new men’s accessories, gift items, and apothecary products. Featured brands include Vineyard Vines, Barbour, Southern Tide, johnnie-O, Peter Millar, as well as a line of denim and workout wear designed specifically for men. The store will also continue to offer formal-wear rentals and a plentiful supply of black bow ties for special events.

“Most of our fashion inspiration comes from classic movies,” explains Gonzales. “My years in the interior design industry have trained my eye to appreciate texture, color, fit, and quality. The biggest compliment we can get is when customers tell us the store has a Lake Forest style. That’s what we want to promote.

“We want every customer to feel like we have been waiting

all day for them to walk through our doors,” he adds. “It’s all the little things that we do—our service—that will set us apart from shopping on the internet.”

Gonzales has timed regular merchandise deliveries to the store with the hope that customers will find something new every time they visit. “I never knew I could love working in retail as much as I have loved working here,” he says, pointing out that an exclusive Lake Forest Vineyard Vines tee shirt made especially for Smith’s sold out in the first three weeks the store was open. “I love projects and this store is a never-ending project. It’s creative and service oriented. I really feel like I’m in my element.”

Located in its longtime storefront on Western Avenue in downtown Lake Forest, Smith’s offers customers many reasons to shop in town rather than online. They offer custom suiting and special ordering with a quick turnaround time when an item

is not in stock. “We hope these changes will help us deliver a good experience for the community and continue to promote Lake Forest as a destination,” Gonzales says. Additionally, they plan to host events benefitting local nonprofit organizations.

Gonzales and Helverson are members of the Church of the Holy Spirit and Gonzales is on the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation board of directors and Gorton Community Center’s Arts & Culture Council. “We’re so grateful to the community for welcoming us so warmly,” Helverson says. “When a customer comes in, we always thank them for visiting the store, but we have been so surprised at how many people have stopped by to thank us for keeping Smith’s open. We feel fortunate to have this opportunity to preserve this part of Lake Forest’s legacy.”

Fashion Matters

Chicago will host a tribute to Jackie O’s timeless style.

THE ORIGINAL INFLUENCER

Fashion Matters Chicago pays tribute to Jackie O. at its upcoming luncheon.

From her earliest days as a debutante until her final years as a New York socialite, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was an icon. Whether she paired pearls with a pillbox hat, or pinned the perfect crystal brooch to a crisp boatneck, her classic looks influenced an entire generation of women. But how do her modest looks hold up in the age of Instagram?

“Jackie O is one of the greatest influencers of all time,” says Cinthya Castro, co-chair of Fashion Matters Chicago (FMC). “She was so feminine and had amazing taste; her style remains timeless.”

To sustain Onassis’ sway over women, as well as introduce her to post-boomer fashionistas, FMC is hosting an event in her honor. Timeless Style from Jackie: An American Treasure will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at Deer Path Inn. The event will be emceed by FMC committee member Mary Presberg of Lake Forest.

The affair will begin with a dramatization of Jackie O’s life, with a semi-fictional monologue performed by actress Venice Scott. (Patti Lechner, another committee member from Lake Forest, discovered Scott at luncheon where she delivered an impressive portrayal of Coco Chanel.) Lunch will be served, followed by a raffle for jewelry, beauty products, books, gift certificates, and home décor.

The final act is an afternoon panel of speakers, which will include Amazing Cosmetics co-founder Lisa Thurman, image consultant Lourdes Arguello, and lifestyle blogger Katie Hinderer of Modly Chic.

FMC is a nonprofit organization that promotes initiatives “to awaken, nourish and communicate the true dignity and inner beauty of women.” Proceeds from previous events have gone to Chicago’s Sherlake Cultural Center and its Sewjourners Sewing Camp. The camp runs a day program for 9 and 10 year olds in Lake Forest, as well as an overnight program in Wisconsin for 11 to 14 year olds. And while many attendees are locals and relatives of staff, FMC provides money towards a scholarship fund so that children of less privileged economic backgrounds are also welcome to join.

“Sewing is an invaluable skill,” says Lechner, whose five daughters are all former campers and counselors. “Mistakes are welcome because it’s how you learn and perfect your work.” Perhaps by promoting creativity and craftsmanship, FMC and Sewjourners will help nurture the next Jackie O.

Tickets to Timeless Style from Jackie: An American Treasure are $75/$65 for early bird purchases (until February 28)/$35 for students. For more information visit fashionmatterschicago.com.

SPRING FEVER

The weather isn’t the only thing that heats up as spring approaches. The real estate market starts popping up like the flowers in the garden, the grass on the lawn, and the leaves on the trees.

“This is the perfect time to start thinking about entering the market,” says Joanna Koperski, an agent with @properties in Lake Forest. “Both buyers and sellers have the opportunity to reap the benefits of the market’s enthusiasm and excitement as we anticipate the good fortune from the new year.”

Spring traditionally sees the highest number of new listings, and buyers who start their search early are more committed to make the transition to a new home. This year offers some particular motivations for buyers to start their searches in February and March.

“As 2020 is an election year, it’s critical to keep in mind that the latter part of the year will be absorbed both politically and economically by it,” says Koperski. “Currently, interest rates are prognosed to stay at record lows and the economy is strong, which is good news for both buyers and sellers to participate in the market as soon as possible.”

An especially motivated group of buyers in spring are parents with school-aged children. For sellers, it’s an advantage to have their homes on the market when this group starts doing their home shopping.

“An interesting component of the early buying pool are families with children who will often choose to begin their home searches in advance, researching neighborhoods and school districts and hoping to settle themselves in their new homes before the summer crunch,” Koperski says. “Listing a home early allows it to become one of the first available properties to be considered by this very active group of buyers.”

Another group of buyers becoming more active are millennials, who are now the largest group of buyers in the market for homes on the North Shore. With easy access to downtown jobs via the Metra and amenities such as forest preserves, lake beaches, and quality schools, the region is increasingly appealing to younger buyers.

“The current economic outlook has opened the door for many groups of prospective buyers seeking more substantial home purchases and a great number of millennials are looking to upgrade from their city condos and move into their first homes, attracted to the North Shore,” Koperski says. “With these new buyers come new demands with their property searches—top finishes, newest conveniences, fully upgraded, and neutral tones. These buyers have little time and patience to spare for extra time

on the property of their choice.”

For all groups of new buyers, Koperski brings a data-driven approach to helping clients find the right buyers and helping buyers find the right home. She says buyers are increasingly sophisticated in how they’re using online search but her access to customized search engines such as Real Scout and the proprietary search engine of @properties offers her clients an edge.

It’s her love and knowledge of the North Shore—leading to a poetic way of describing seasonal transitions—that might just be her ace in the hole for clients.

“Lake Forest and the North Shore are beautiful all times of the year. However, the approach of spring brings a magical quality with it—the air carries the scent of an awakening earth, the sun is brighter, soft rains wash away winter grime and reveal greening fields and the first harbingers of spring,” Koperski says. “It’s a promise of rebirth and new beginnings.”

I do it but I hate it. What if you could achieve the results while lying down? Interested?

We are excited to introduce CoolTone to our practice. This technology will bring a new dimension to help patients achieve their body contouring goals of improving muscle strength and tone.

CoolTone is the latest device to be introduced by CoolSculpt the leader in noninvasive fat reduction. CoolTone’s magnetic muscle stimulation, or MMS technology, penetrates the muscle layers and induces involuntary muscle contractions. The body’s response to these contractions is to strengthen its muscle fibers resulting in improved muscle conditioning. After treatments, the abdomen will be firmer and have a more defined and toned appearance. Buttocks will have a more toned appearance and will be firmer.

CoolTone has 50 percent more magnetic intensity than the leading competitor. With the backing of Allergan I expect it to become the gold standard.

Typical protocols are four sessions over a two-week period. Results are immediate. There is no downtime. CoolTone can be combined with CoolSculpt or after liposuction to achieve that athletic toned appearance. CoolTone can also be a standalone procedure in that individual who is already in good shape but wants more definition.

Typical treatments only take a half-hour. As part of our introduction of this exciting technology we are offering it at a substantial discount.

ONE LAST THING

Vickie Marasco has had a glorious journey around the globe before settling in Lake Forest. Born in Dallas and raised in Milwaukee, she studied textile design at the University of Wisconsin before spending a decade in Saudi Arabia, Germany, England, and Greece. Marasco designed fabrics and garments for exclusive clients (including members of the Saudi royal family) before eventually returning home and becoming a gallery curator. She is also the founder of the Art Impact Project, a nonprofit agency that facilitates art programs for underprivileged members of the community. This month, her aesthetic sensibilities are on display at The Gallery, where she has co-curated Ebb & Flow, a show featuring the art of New Orleans artist Elise Allen. Here a re a few of her favorite lasts:

LAST GREAT LOCAL ARTIST YOU DISCOVERED? Dan Simoneau. I came across his powerful art when judging a show this year. A broader spectrum of his figurative work was shown at Blue Moon Gallery, and I couldn’t miss it. His realism, detail, technique and storytelling are absolutely mesmerizing.

LAST GREAT ART BOOK ON YOUR COFFEE TABLE?

René Romero Schuler: Life and Works is a new treasure. It is filled with images of Schuler’s artwork and, more importantly, provides insight into the personal meaning behind the work. Her vision connects very closely with the mission of Art Impact Project in how art and expression are emotionally beneficial for us all.

LAST GREAT EXHIBITION OR GALLERY SHOW YOU ATTENDED?

I recently visited the Neue Galerie in New York and loved the artwork exhibited by Gustav Klimt and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. I especially enjoyed seeing Klimt’s “Woman in Gold”

up close—the abstracted shapes and details were interesting and symbolized aspects of the woman’s life. The actual gold paint was rich and beautiful. Kirchner had a large body of work in several media, but what really drew me in were his brush strokes and unusual use of bold and vibrant color. He was said to have been one of the original developers of the Expressionist movement.

LAST GREAT PIECE OF ART YOU HUNG

ON YOUR WALLS?

A watercolor of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy, painted by my daughter Sophie. She studied there last semester. I’m thrilled that she could experience the beautiful art and inspirations of Europe and that we could share some of it together.

LAST GREAT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?

At our Art Impact Project fundraiser, my friend and art partner David Motley literally took my written speech away from me and told me, “Just be you and stay true to who you are and tell your story.” These words help to ground me and keep me focused no matter what I am dealing with.
