We were concerned at first because Russ’s price was more than half of his competitors quoted price. After our tour we were very comfortable with our decision. Installation day was quick and painless. Our house was left in great condition. I highly recommend this company!”

EDITOR’S NOTE
Congratulations on flying through the first
two months of the year. March, with its longer days and planned spring break getaways always feels like a breath of fresh air.
That’s why I love our Spring Fashion story so much. Photographed on the shores of Lake Michigan, it’s a celebration of lighter textures, wild yet wearable prints, and all the best accessories. It’s easy to fall in love with the beautiful looks, many of which will be perfect for all the luncheons and dinner dances coming up soon.
Check out Bag of Tricks before you head off to the next lunch with your ladies.
Our Country Vs. Town star, Michelle Riley, will likely be at many of the best events this season. As a member of the Hinsdale Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago and the Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills chapter of National Charity League, plus a supporter of other organizations, this dynamo will be out and about.
Countdown to Derby Day offers a sneak peek at the 70th an-
nual Derby Day party thrown by Hinsdale Auxiliary of Brightpoint (formerly Children’s Home + Aid) and was a true joy to write. Members of this organization are some of the hardest working volunteers around with generational commitment. The Blair Family has been involved with the 25th, 50th, and now the 70th, at which they will be honored for their support.
Dinner Date takes us to Eddie V.’s, where the steak and seafood are on point and the vibes are high.
We are thrilled to share stories in collaboration with some innovative businesses this month. Our trusted legal minds at Strategic Divorce and the Merel Law Firm weigh in with timely advice.
The issue wraps up with The Children’s Ball and The Assembly Ball, where the 2024 class of Hinsdale Assembly debutantes and honor guards shine on our Living + Giving pages.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN
MICHELLE RILEY grew up in the Pacific Northwest, splitting time between Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, where her dad lived after her parents’ divorce. “I was fortunate to have two incredible families. Alongside my parents, stepmom and stepdad, I have three half-siblings; Lesley, Mike, and Patrick, and my stepdad’s large Lebanese family, all of whom made growing up very lively,” Michelle says.
Her mom, a high school English teacher, and dad, a contract negotiator, instilled strong values in Michelle. Family was always a top priority, along with volunteering and giving back to the community.
Growing up, she loved cheering on the Portland Trail Blazers, Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners. She also developed a love for golf.
Michella grounded herself in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, spending childhood summers on the Oregon coast at a family house, exploring Cannon Beach, Pacific City, and Neskowin. “I loved wandering through tide pools and coastal forests. Getting to soak up the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest was special, and it's been amazing to share that with my kids now when we are back visiting family,” she says.
In high school, she kept busy with activities like golf team, dance team, and speech team. A summer study abroad program in Solsona, Spain further fueled a passion for travel that was sparked on family trips across the U.S. and Canada to Alaska, Montana, Colorado, California, Idaho, Nevada, and Victoria, Whistler, and Vancouver, British Columbia.
For college, Michelle attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where she majored in Speech Communications and joined Delta Delta Delta Sorority, which helped provide a sense of community at such a large environment. Tri Delta supports St. Jude, and Michelle led PR efforts for her chapter’s fundraising. She also had her first public relations internship with Edelman during college. This experience lasted almost three years, and Michelle had the unique opportunity of interning within each of the groups in the Seattle office and learning from some of the best leaders in the business. This intrepid traveler also participated in the Semester at Sea study abroad program, which she calls, “An unforgettable journey spanning 10 countries in 100 days. Starting in Vancouver, B.C., our voyage traveled to Japan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Kenya, South Africa, Brazil, and Cuba, before ending in New Orleans. During the voyage, we had interesting guest speakers, such as Desmond Tutu and Fidel Castro. This experience was one of the most enriching chapters of my life, teaching me adaptability, problem-solving, and resilience—skills that have been invaluable to both my personal growth and professional success.”
Post-college, Michelle continued her PR career in Los Angeles. She fondly remembers this time of balancing creativity and strategy, saying, “It was really a crash course in balancing big ideas with practical execution, all while learning the power of storytelling.” A transfer to Chicago brought surprises, including the unexpected mix of Midwest warmth and big-city energy, and an introduction to the man who would be become her husband of nearly 17 years, Jim.
They have two active children, Tom (14) and Caitlin (12). Tom plays soccer for the Wizards Oak Brook club and baseball for the Hounds and serves the community as a junior board member for the Infant Welfare Society’s Hinsdale Auxiliary Chapter. Caitlin plays softball for both Empire and Hounds Fastpitch, is a member of Spartan Chorale, and the National Charity League,
Currently, Michelle serves as Senior Vice President and PR leader at an integrated marketing firm based in Chicago, specializing in guiding PR clients in the professional and financial services sectors on brand reputation and crisis and issues management initiatives.
When not at a soccer, baseball, or softball field, she can be found on the golf course or planning the family’s next trip.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN
Do you have a mantra? Yes, “Focus on what you can control.” It keeps me grounded when facing challenges, big or small. There’s so much that’s unpredictable but channeling my energy into the things I can influence—my attitude, my effort, my decisions—helps me stay productive and optimistic. On your reading stack? Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. What organizations do you support? I am committed to giving back to our Hinsdale community and feel fortunate to be involved in several incredible organizations. Currently, I am the co-president of the Hinsdale Middle School PTO, which allows me to work closely with other dedicated parents and faculty to enrich the school experience for our students. I’m also an active member of the Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills chapter of National Charity League, which is a mother-daughter philanthropic organization. This year, I am co-chairing our annual mother-daughter tea alongside my own daughter Caitlin and Christy Hernandez and her daughter Katelyn. Beyond that, I contribute to the Infant Welfare Society Hinsdale
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
What’s your go-to outfit? A casual dress and ballet flats. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? My iPhone, water, and coffee. Where do they know you by name? Cafe La Fortuna. If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would you say? It has a lovely small-town charm with so much history, gorgeous homes, and a real sense of community.
WHEN IN TOWN
Do you wear any outfits or accessories that like too much day to day, but are perfect for the city? When I’m in the city for work, you’ll usually find me in a dress paired with my Veronica Beard blazer. On nights out, I lean toward more relaxed yet chic outfits, like a sleek blouse with tailored pants or a midi dress and a great pair of heels and bolder jewelry. What’s in your bag? AirPods for podcast listening (I’m hooked on How I Built This and Morning Brew Daily), mints, and lipstick. View that never gets old? Chicago is a breathtaking city, and while the view from my office in the AON Center is impressive, there isn’t a lot like experiencing the city from the Architecture Boat Tour—it never gets old. Best quick bite or hidden gem? Back when we lived in the city, one of our favorite things was to pick up a great bottle of wine and head to Tango Sur on Southport. Do you have a favorite museum? The Museum of Contemporary Art. I’m drawn to its bold exhibits. The architecture itself is stunning, with spaces that feel both modern and inviting. What is your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? High Fidelity has always been a favorite, because it of how it captures Chicago—its music scene, neighborhoods that aren’t shown often in other movies, and authenticity.
Chapter by managing PR and social media efforts, and previously, I was the president of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club. What’s your signature entertaining style? My husband and I like creating an atmosphere where everyone feels at home, like they can grab a drink, and just relax. For me, it’s normally less about hosting in the traditional sense, and more about creating a vibe where everyone feels like they can just show up and be themselves. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? During the week, I sit and talk with my kids during their breakfast, enjoy a quiet coffee after they head to school and look at my schedule for the day. I also fit in a workout to clear my mind, either a walk outside or Pilates. Music you love? It depends on the day. I listen to everything from Cold War Kids and Graham Barham to Kendrick Lamar and Tribe Called Quest. Each day has its own vibe. Favorite spring tradition or activity? The last few years, we’ve caught a baseball game during spring break. Last year, we saw the Giants vs. A’s and the year prior, we went to the National’s opening day.

Insider Secrets from LARYSA DOMINO
The Larysa Domino Group is recognized as a leading Real Estate Team with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate in Hinsdale and surrounding suburbs. Larysa’s clients confidently attribute this to her background in corporate finance and her roll up her sleeves attitude.
Larysa is a lifetime local and a graduate of Hinsdale Central High School. A Northwestern University alum with a BA in Economics, CPA and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, Larysa knows numbers. Her core business principle is that a comprehensive market analysis creates competitive advantages for all – whether that involves pricing and preparing a listing or negotiating an offer. Helping clients make sound investments in the place they call home is her specialty.
What trends are you seeing in the 2025 real estate market?
The number of homes traded privately, off-market, has increased over the past year. We have lists of sellers who are interested in a private sale, and we pair these with buyers. Inventory has been very low, so the benefit to buyers is a great home without the hassle of multiple bids. Sellers are safeguarded with a very private transaction, minimal showings, and a great price. We have access to many off-market opportunities that have benefited our clients tremendously.
Buyers are also much more flexible with terms and I believe this will continue through 2025. Buyers are offering extreme flexibility in move out date, whether it be a longer closing or significant post-possession / rent back
options. This allows sellers to sell their home and take time in moving out to meet their family’s needs.
Are real estate prices up in Hinsdale?
Yes. Average prices in Hinsdale are up 22% over the last year. * Prices are up in neighboring suburbs as well. It is a sellers market – great opportunity if you are considering a sale of your home.
When should I reach out to a real estate professional?
I recommend contacting me up to 9 months prior to a desired move out date. This allows adequate time for your home preparation. It also allows for a thorough discussion in market dynamics, peak selling season and comparative property analysis. In addition, if you are planning on purchasing something locally, we can begin looking for the buying opportunity which could take some time given low inventory levels.
What differentiates your team?
Our financial acumen, work ethic and grit. I have a background in corporate finance, which is different from most agents. As our client, you will always understand where you are buying in to the market. We are strong with comparable property analysis, excellent in pricing and love negotiations.
We are also available 7 days a week and work from morning to night to achieve your real estate goals.
What suburbs does your team service?
We service Hinsdale and the surrounding suburbs including: Clarendon Hills, Burr Ridge, Oak Brook, Western Springs, La Grange, Elmhurst, Downers Grove, Westmont, Darien and Willowbrook.
cess your home will shine and attract the most possible buyers.
How long will it take to sell my home?
“The number of homes traded privately, offmarket, has increased over the past year. Sellers are safeguarded with a very private transaction, minimal showings, and a great price. We have access to many offmarket opportunities that have benefited our clients tremendously.”
We also recently began servicing Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
When is the peak selling season?
We have started our peak selling season, the “spring market” which begins mid-January and runs through end of May. The second largest selling season is the Fall Market which begins mid-September and runs through mid-November.
How should I prepare my home for sale?
We help our sellers perfectly prepare their home from market. We advise on home repairs, minor updates such as painting and furniture placement. When needed, we recommend staging experts. After our home prep pro -
The average home in Hinsdale received a contract in 27 days.* This trend is similar in neighboring suburbs. Homes that are renovated may sell faster, while homes that need a few updates may take a few extra weeks. But on average homes are selling very quickly, given the low inventory.
Do I have to pay over ask price in this market?
Not necessarily. First, you need to understand if the list price is fair. Sometimes sellers price too low, creating a bidding war. In these cases, you may actually get a better “deal” by paying over list price than paying list price on an overpriced property.
There are many other “buckets” we use in a negotiation, in addition to price. We coach our buyers and advise them prior to the negotiation to ensure they understand all the options and levers available.

FUTURE OF FITNESS WELLNESS
BODY20: A revolutionary workout for busy lifestyles.
WORDS BY JANIS MVK / PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUNVIJAY PAUL
BODY20 is changing the way people approach fitness. Located just off Kingery Highway, at the intersection of Westmont, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, and Oak Brook, this innovative studio offers a 20-minute full-body workout experience that seamlessly fits into the busiest of lifestyles.
Rebecca Haass, studio owner, has always been a fitness enthusiast. Her gym time dwindled as she and her husband, Erik, started a family. In 2020, after the birth of their fourth child and while navigating the challenges of homeschooling during COVID, her fitness routine had nearly disappeared. That’s when she discovered BODY20 and was blown away by the results. “In only eight weeks, I saw definition in my arm muscles and lost eight pounds,” she says. Inspired by her transformation, Haass knew the Western Suburbs needed this groundbreaking workout solution.
Opening its doors in July 2023, BODY20 brings the future of fitness to the community with Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) technology. This state-of-the-art personal training approach combines low-impact strength training with electrical impulses to activate deep muscle contractions, delivering a full-body workout equivalent to four to six hours in the gym—all in just 20 minutes.
EMS offers a highly effective workout without placing excessive strain on your joints. Instead of relying on heavy weights or high-impact exercises, EMS uses low-level electrical impulses to stimulate deep muscle contractions. “This direct muscle activation means you can work your entire body at a high intensity while reducing the repetitive stress often associated with traditional workouts and lifting heavy weights,” says Haass. EMS is ideal for individuals with joint sensitivities, those returning from injury, or anyone simply looking for a safer, low-impact way to achieve their fitness goals. "We help the fit get fitter, the time-pressed reprioritize fitness, and individuals with physical limitations build muscle safely," she says.
What sets BODY20 apart is its focus on personalized, one-onone training. Certified personal trainers guide members through every session, tailoring workouts to individual goals and fitness levels. Whether clients aim to build strength, tone up, or recover from injury, the trainers’ expertise ensures maximum results. “Fitness isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey,” she says. “That’s why our trainers collaborate with each client to create a plan that’s as unique as they are.”
BODY20 also utilizes an InBody machine, which tracks each member’s progress by measuring skeletal muscle mass, body fat,
visceral fat, and more. Regular goal-setting sessions every six weeks hold both members and trainers accountable, fostering a supportive environment that drives results.
The process is simple and efficient. Members arrive in cotton base-layer workout attire and are suited up in the “super suit,” which ensures effective electrical impulse transmission. In just 30 minutes, clients are in and out, having completed their personalized 20-minute workout.
“BODY20 is for everyone,” she says. With members ranging in age from 18 to 82, the studio caters to all fitness levels. Benefits include increased muscle strength, reduced visceral fat, improved posture, pain relief, and minimized joint stress.

UNDERSTANDING DIVORCE : Offering Empathy Over Judgment
WORDS BY MICHONE J. RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
No one enters marriage expecting it to end. No one dreams of making the painful decision to divorce. Yet, for many, life doesn’t go according to plan. Marriages sometimes fail, often for reasons that aren’t visible to the outside world. As a divorce attorney, I see this pain up close. Unfortunately, those going through divorce often face not only personal heartbreak but also judgment from others.
Here's an important truth: People marry with the best of intentions. They hope for a lifetime together. When someone seeks legal advice about divorce, it’s never a decision they’ve made lightly. In most cases, they’ve spent years trying to save their relationship. Despite their efforts, they have reached a point where, to envision a happier future, they feel they must let go of the marriage.
Divorce is never as simple as it seems. Often, clients will give surface reasons at first, such as growing apart or falling out of love. But as their story unfolds, deeper struggles emerge—trauma, neglect, or years of emotional abuse. I’ve had clients who initially mentioned minor complaints, only to later reveal they’d endured tremendous pain for decades. Please don’t judge someone’s stated reasons for divorce.
In my experience, nearly all my clients have worked hard to avoid this outcome. They’ve tried counseling, self-help strategies,
and heart-to-heart discussions. Divorce, for most, is a last resort. It’s a difficult and frightening step, but one they feel is necessary to move forward.
What makes this journey even harder is the criticism people often face. Divorce is already an emotional and financial challenge. The last thing anyone needs is more guilt or shame. As a community, we can do better. Please offer support and compassion to friends, family, and colleagues going through this process.
If someone you care about is getting divorced, be there for them. Listen without judgment. Offer a helping hand—whether it’s with childcare, errands, or simply sharing a meal. Let them know they aren’t alone.
Small acts of kindness provide comfort during this overwhelming time. Compassion is free and so valuable.
Divorce is not the end of the story; for many, it’s the start of a new chapter. But in those early stages, when fear and uncertainty are at their peak, people need empathy and compassion. By offering your support, you can help them navigate the painful process and move toward a brighter future.
Two years from now, things will likely be much better for them. But today, your understanding could be the light they need most.

Countdown to Derby Day
For 70 years, the first Saturday in May has been a day for finery, fascinators, and raising funds to support families in need.

The Kentucky Derby is known to many as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Hinsdale Auxiliary of Brightpoint, formerly Children’s Home + Aid, the day has a much longer lasting impact for children and families all over Illinois.
Since 1955, members of this small but mighty group have hosted an epic Derby Day party. Locations have ranged from backyards to country clubs to grand hotel ballrooms, and even the zoo.
Wherever the Hinsdale Auxiliary gathers, that’s the place to be to watch the race.
2025 chair Margo Facchini joined the auxiliary five years ago. She served as co-chair last year and is solo chairing this anniversary celebration. “We have a new venue, the Marriott Chicago Southwest in Burr Ridge. This means more people can join the fun. We’re hoping past members will attend and are reaching out with special invitations to all those who have been a part of planning this special day in the past,” Facchini says.
Expect to mingle with many families who’ve been involved for generations. Some served as teenaged valets for their mothers, then became leaders in the group as themselves.
It’s always been a family affair for the Blair family, who will be honored for 50 years of involvement and the Blair Family Foundation’s continued commitment to Brightpoint.
Sean Blair, who was one of those car parkers during his mother Jolynn’s time in the auxiliary, offers this timeline, saying, “My mother joined the Hinsdale Auxiliary in 1979 when there were two prominent charities in town, the Infant Welfare Society and Children’s Home + Aid. My mom was one of the chairs of the 25th anniversary. Our family chaired the 50th anniversary, which was held at Brookfield Zoo, a client of my father’s software company and great people to work with.”
tion, and serving on the Metropolitan Board, Blair was recruited to Brightpoint Board of Trustees, where he has served for more than 20 years. “I’m a big proponent of work life balance and I’ve always had the desire to give back. That’s how I find balance. It’s active, it’s rewarding, they leverage everyone’s expertise very well,” Blair says.
Trustees ensure that Brightpoint is thriving and fiscally healthy to create an implement the programs that advance the mission. Blair is especially proud of supporting the Thriving Fathers and Families (TFF) program, which helps to strengthen fathers’ relationships with their children, families, and community. Participating dads spend more time with their children, improve their parenting and co-parenting skills, and improve their overall relationships with their children and co-parents.
Facchini also mentions this program as a standout, sharing that a TFF participant spoke movingly at last year’s Derby Day.
Auxiliary president Tish Newcomer explains, “Brightpoint is set up to help families across Illinois. I love the message that it’s a preventive organization. They want to provide foundational support for families before things become catastrophic.”
Faccini sees so much potential in the mission. She shares, “My mom was divorced with six kids in a time when you really didn’t get a lot of support. We had to use the welfare system, and it was quite embarrassing for my mom. We were blessed with my grandparents helping us out and she had good friends. Today, I think Brightpoint does such amazing things for people who are in need. They provide services to 34,000 families statewide, but I know there are more people we can reach.”
Newcomer adds, “The funds we raise at Derby Day go to support early childcare for 1,200 children. It’s not only a childcare center but full of resources for the families.”
After co-founding the Men’s Associa-
For this epic anniversary, the Hinsdale Auxiliary is ready to welcome more than 200 people to network with Brightpoint representatives and learn more about the programs, watch the Kentucky Derby with friends old and new, enjoy dinner and dancing, bid on some incredible items, and hear from people who’ve improved their lives through Brightpoint programs. “You’ll love hearing from the speakers who share how they’ve benefitted, advanced their lives, and are thriving,” Newcomer says.
“Get in the spirit and come watch the Kentucky Derby with us for a great cause,” Facchini says.
The Hinsdale Auxiliary’s 70th Annual Derby Fay Party is Saturday, May 3 from 4:40 – 10:30 p.m. at the Marriott Burr Ridge. Buy tickets at brightpoint.org.

Divorce for Business Owners
WORDS BY DAVID ZWASKA
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONNOR LANE
Divorce is already a scary proposition for anyone. But divorce for someone who owns a business sound like a nightmare, right? It doesn’t have to be. There are things that can be done alongside an experienced attorney to keep you and your business protected in a divorce case.
What are the key factors a business owner should consider in a divorce?
In divorce, assets acquired during the marriage are generally presumed to be marital property. This includes businesses started during the marriage, outside of a few exceptions.
Another factor the court may consider is each spouse’s contribution to the business. For example, if one spouse founded and grew the business, they may argue for a larger share. Conversely, if the other spouse focused on raising children or supporting the family, they could argue for a more equitable split of the business’s value.
Can a pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreement help?
Good news here: yes. In fact, most of the pre-nuptial agreements (“prenups”) we negotiate involve protecting businesses in the event of a divorce. As a refresher, a prenup is a legally binding contract that spouses sign before a marriage that outlines what happens to property and debt in the event of a divorce. A postnuptial agreement (“postnup”) is similar, except that it is signed during the marriage instead of before the marriage.
What is going to happen to my business?
There are several ways in which parties (and judges) address a marital business in a divorce action, including the following:
1. Buyout: In a divorce, marital businesses are valued by a neutral expert or opposing experts for each party. Once a value for the business is established, a buyout of one spouse’s interest in the company can take place at the time of divorce or over a period of years after the divorce.
2. Sale: Another option for parties with a marital business is to sell the business. This option typically will not require a valuation of the business as it will be sold for fair market value, the best indicator of value. Upon the sale, the proceeds from the sale of the company can be divided as agreed by the parties or otherwise ordered by the court.
3. Maintaining Shared Ownership: In some, albeit limited, situations, spouses can continue as partners in the business post-divorce. Both parties can remain as de-facto owners of the company and one spouse’s ownership in the company might be held in a “constructive trust,” ultimately allowing both to maintain an interest in the company until a future sale or buyout.
With thoughtful legal strategies, business owners can protect their interests while achieving equitable divorce outcomes. How is this helpful for you?
At Merel Family Law, we take pride in protecting our clients and their assets from all angles. We’ve researched the case law and we’ve done the work. Hinsdale native, Roy Hawthorne of Justin Winter and Associates, Forbes Global Properties is taking his real estate expertise to new heights at the stunning Cliffs Communities in the Western Carolinas. With more than 30 years of selling luxury real estate in Chicago and the Western Suburbs, Hawthorne now guides Illinois residents to the place he's come to love.
Hawthorne and his wife find it hard to pinpoint just one reason why the Western Carolinas are so captivating. “For me, it’s the seven award-winning private golf courses, and for my wife, it’s the endless mountain trails for hiking and biking,” he says. “For others, it might be the stunning beauty of Lake Keowee, or the vibrant cultural scene in Greenville.” The change of scenery has been both refreshing and inspiring. “I feel reinvigorated—I truly believe I’ve found the perfect place to live and work,” he says.
Hawthorne splits his time between Hinsdale and South Carolina, offering a personalized approach to introducing clients to Greenville. He starts by visiting clients at their homes in the Chicago area to discuss everything Greenville and the Cliffs have to offer. After that, he coordinates and leads tailored real estate tours in South Carolina, allowing them to experience it firsthand. “I’ll take them to all of the Cliffs Communities showing them the golf courses, clubhouses, marinas, wellness centers, and, depending on what’s right for the client, we’ll look at available homes and homesites,” he says. “Watching them experience the lifestyle, the climate, and the amenities is really gratifying.”
With extensive real estate expertise, Hawthorne brings handson experience as the owner of two successful companies: one that has built dozens of new construction homes and condos, and another that has rehabbed and flipped properties. This dual
background enhances his skill set. “I have a deep understanding of real estate not just as an investment but also of home construction, allowing me to spot issues in homes that other agents might overlook,” he says. “Like my clients, I started as a buyer. I’ve researched the area, interviewed the builders, and experienced the Cliffs lifestyle firsthand, so I can provide genuine and informed advice”. Hawthorne is dedicated to helping clients find their ideal home—whether it’s a piece of land for a custom build, a fixer-upper ready for remodeling, or a move-in-ready property. He draws on his own experience of discovering and falling in love with the Western Carolinas to guide them. Clients appreciate not only his expertise but also his extensive network of referrals for architects, builders, and tradespeople, ensuring they have access to top-tier resources at every stage of the process.
South Carolina's Upstate region is a hidden gem, boasting breathtaking landscapes, a mild climate, and endless opportunities for an active outdoor lifestyle. With the right guidance, finding the perfect property here can be an exciting and seamless journey. It’s no wonder Hawthorne believes Greenville and the Cliffs make a lasting impression. “I’ve yet to meet anyone who didn’t fall in love with Greenville and the Cliffs,” he says.

At the new Eddie V’s in Oak Brook, prime steaks and immaculately fresh seafood are married with an uncommon blend of live music, a bejeweled ambiance and pampering service.
WORDS BY PETER MICHAEL
Afew months ago, a pair of sharply dressed couples strolled into the new Eddie V’s Prime Seafood in Oak Brook, intent on enjoying an elegant meal in one of the area’s newest steakhouses. No distractions. No time limits. No social obligations. Their most pressing concern? Should they order the tableside filet-mignon steak tartare (an absolutely delight) or Eddie V’s cotija- and remouladesmothered lobster tacos (what may be the best offering on the entire menu).
Caviar Baked Potato
DINNE R DATE
The man’s smile, milky cereal spoon in hand, was so bright it could have illuminated the entire dining room. It was as if he’d discovered the fountain of youth in shopping plaza just off Butterfield Road in Oak Brook
By all accounts, they had a grand ole time. They ordered well. They chit-chatted with their servers throughout his meal. And polished their plates clean. But at the close of their meal, one member of the group gazed at his dessert menu and remarked, somewhat sarcastically, that one of his favorite sweet treats seemed to be missing. “I don’t see any Cap’n Crunch cereal,” the man quipped, “anywhere on your menu.”
His server, James, chuckled and asked him to explain his Cap’n Crunch obsession. At which point, the man playfully pointed toward his wife and said, “She never lets me have at home, but I love it."
James quickly sprinted back to Eddie V’s managers. Whispers were exchanged. Plans were hatched. A runner was called over to the join their huddle, the way an extra wide receiver might sprint in from the sidelines for a key fourth-down play. Heads nodded. A play was called. The huddle broke.
I share this feel-good story for two reasons: first, it’s a hella cute foodie fairy tale. And second, after experiencing Eddie V’s food, its charming service and live music, I understand that reason for that man’s glowing smile.
There are now more than 30 Eddie V’s locations scattered the country. They anchor tourist hot spots, downtown urban areas and high-end malls. But out of all my Eddie V’s visits, I think I enjoyed our recent Oak Brook experience the most.
Off the runner flew— he ran a “z fly post route” to the nearest grocery—in search of the cereal. When he returned, box in hand, he lateraled it to the kitchen team, who presented the cereal in a lidded caviar bowl alongside a carafe of milk. The crunchy dessert was served on a plate personalized with the phrase "Crunch-atize me Captain," the tagline found on every box of Cap’n Crunch cereal.
Why the local love? Because I got to know the people who run it. Take executive chef Tarak Gandhi, who’s been working for Eddie V’s parent company, Darden Restaurants, for 11 years. He immigrated to this country from India, when he was 15, not knowing a syllable of English. Look at him now: He’s a culinary force of nature who’s opened so many new locations he’s lost count. In Oak Brook, he's already turned Eddie V’s kitchen into a well-oiled operation. His 40-day wetaged prime steaks are cut in house, the fat professionally trimmed for a premium cut and then broiled at 1,200, so they arrive at your table at the perfect temperature.
Don’t be fooled into thinking Eddie V’s is just a steakhouse. This is a surf and turf Valhalla, where seafood is flown in daily, often sourced by captains that have long-standing relationships with the chain. Take, for example, Eddie V’s butter-poached lobster mashed potatoes, which are so unctuous you’d swear someone

twice baked potatoes, which are smeared with crème fraiche and freckled
On our next visit, I’d be hard pressed to decide between an
Eddie V’s ribeye or its Chilean seabass, the latter served steamed Hong Kong-style in a sherry-soy sauce. And after our visit, I’m convinced there are only two types of lamb chops in this world: those that come crusted with a duxelles of morel mushrooms, wading in an herb-infused chimichurri broth, and those that do not.
If you visit on the weekends, book a table in the V Lounge area, so you have unobstructive views of the live musicians playing 15 feet away from you.
During our visit, I couldn’t stop tapping my feet, as much of their set seemed to be cribbed straight from my Spotify playlist. The restaurant’s dining room doesn’t try too hard to look chic. This

DINNER DATE
isn’t the sportsbook lounge at the Cosmopolitan in Vegas. It’s a room flush with warm woods, gold accents and plenty of glass. The more time I spent in the company of Eddie V’s staff, the more fun I had. This happens at well-run restaurants. When I asked manager/ sommelier Anna Cafeo to provide us a pairing for our ribeye and she poured us
a 2013 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon, I knew I was in skilled hands. We spoke of many things: How sommeliers can learn from bartenders, the rigors of studying for her level 2 sommelier exam and how, prior to her recent move to Chicago, she bequeathed half of her wine collection to dear friends.
So as the night hummed along, and
the musical hits kept flowing, I motioned our server over and asked him why everyone—from the chef to the sommelier and the musicians—seemed so happy. He told me the secret: He’d never worked at a restaurant that encouraged him to be himself more than this place. Something tells me that there plenty of diners, including one rather impassioned cereal-lover, who will feel the exact same way.

JOURNEYS
As I stepped off the plane at Kos International Airport, a soft breeze carried the scent of the sea, filling me with a sense of excitement and peace.
The 15-minute drive to OKU Kos, nestled by a serene beach, was picturesque—an endless stretch of sand dunes and blue waters meeting the skyline. Arriving at the resort, I was greeted by an atmosphere of relaxed luxury. Inspired by the traditional Greek village, OKU Kos was a minimalist haven, where whitewashed walls met earthy tones and the sound of waves became an ever-present melody.
From the moment I walked through the open-air lobby, I could feel the island’s slow rhythm urging me to let go of the fast pace of life I had left behind. My home for the next few days was a spacious sea-view suite, complete with its own private pool. OKU Kos features 100 guest rooms, including suites with private and semi-private pools, as well as a few two-bedroom villas for those seeking even more seclusion. The design was sleek yet comforting, with natural wood accents, wide windows, and soft linens—all thoughtfully arranged to create a calming space.
On my first morning, I decided to start the day with a group yoga class held at the resort. These classes, offered daily, provide a mix of styles, and the morning session focused on gentle stretches to awaken the body. The instructor’s soothing voice combined with the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea made for a truly rejuvenating experience. For those looking for a more
personalized touch, private yoga sessions were also available, and I was tempted to book one later in the week.
After yoga, I joined a meditation and healing workshop led by one of the resort's in-house guides. These workshops, held weekly in small groups, offer a variety of practices aimed at reconnecting with oneself. On this particular day, the session was centered on breathwork and guided visualization. I was told that on occasion, the resort also invites visiting shamans who lead healing retreats. The peaceful energy of the space made it easy to immerse myself fully in the practice.
As the afternoon sun warmed the earth, I made my way to To Kima, the resort’s main restaurant, for lunch. True to OKU Kos's commitment to sustainability, the menu featured farm-to-table dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. I indulged in fresh seafood, grilled to perfection, paired with vegetables picked from nearby farms. The flavors were simple but rich, honoring the bounty of the land and sea. The restaurant’s laid-back yet refined vibe was the perfect setting for savoring the fresh, Mediterranean flavors.
Next, I wandered down to the private beach, where sunbeds were spaced far apart to ensure each guest could enjoy their own patch of paradise. The sandy shoreline and clear waters called to me, so I spent the next few hours alternating between reading a book and dipping into the cool, turquoise sea. The sun overhead, the gentle sound of waves, and the sheer beauty of the Aegean made me feel completely at ease.
Later that day, I decided to explore the resort's spa, renowned for its holistic treatments and tranquil ambiance. The spa, inspired by Kos’s ancient healing traditions, features a carefully curated treatment menu, but what caught my attention was the hammam—a traditional steam room designed to cleanse the body and relax the mind. I spent a few minutes in the steam before enjoying a soothing full-body massage that melted away any lingering tension. Afterward, I retreated to the quiet pool and relaxation area, where I sat in silence, sipping herbal tea and watching the sunlight play on the water's surface.
One of the most memorable aspects of OKU Kos was its

state-of-the-art fitness studio, open to all guests. On my second morning, I spent time there, using the selection of cardio and strength-based machines to reinvigorate myself before breakfast. The resort’s commitment to wellness extended beyond relaxation; it was about balance—energizing the body while quieting the mind.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to the To Kima bar, where the golden hour brought the most magical light to the terrace. I ordered a cocktail made from fresh, local herbs and citrus, and watched in awe as the sky blazed with pinks and oranges, reflecting off the still waters of the Aegean. The sunsets at OKU Kos were legendary, and now I understood why. It felt like the entire world had paused, just for a moment, to marvel at the beauty of nature.
That evening, I joined a small group of guests for a private dinner on the beach. The menu was simple yet elegant, highlighting the best of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. We dined by candlelight, the soft lapping of the waves providing a soundtrack to the evening. Each dish celebrated local ingredients—fresh fish, fragrant herbs, and olive oil from the
it was about being mindful of where the food came from and how it connected us to the land.
On my final day, I took a trip to Therma Hot Springs, located on the southern coast of Kos. The hot springs are a natural phenomenon, where volcanic activity heats the water, creating a warm and therapeutic experience. Soaking in the springs while gazing at the rugged coastline was the perfect way to cap off my trip. I felt deeply connected to the island's history of healing, knowing that Kos was the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine.
Back at the resort, I took one last dip in my private pool, reflecting on the past few days. OKU Kos had offered more than just luxury—it had provided a space for deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Whether it was the yoga classes, the tranquil spa, the quiet moments on the beach, or the rich history I explored, every experience seemed designed to soothe my soul and help me reconnect with myself.
As I packed my bags, I knew this was not a goodbye, but a "see you again." Kos, with its rich cultural heritage and laid-back beauty, had worked its way into my heart. And OKU Kos, with its seamless blend of luxury and mindfulness, had given me an experience I would carry with me long after I left the island.

The Children’s Ball
More than 700 guests came together for the black-tie gala hosted by 2024 Children’s Research Fund Campaign and presented by Epsilon Economics, Epsilon Life Sciences, Jewel-Osco, and Hinsdale-based investment firm OCEANM19. Over $2.6 million was raised at the event, helping to reach a total of $4.4 million for the Board’s annual campaign. The funds raised through the Children’s Ball benefit the Children’s Research Fund’s current three-year, $9 million commitment to Advanced Therapeutics at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. One of the evening’s most inspiring moments was a video about a 6-year-old, Mason Flessner, who participated in a clinical trial at Lurie Children’s for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic disorder causing progressive muscle weakness. Mason’s care team, led by Drs. Nancy Kuntz and Abigail Schwaede, selected an FDA-approved gene therapy, ELEVIDYS, to slow the progression of his DMD. Thanks to this groundbreaking gene therapy, Mason can now run faster, climb stairs more easily, and even jump. His younger brother, 4-year-old Dawson, who also has DMD, is waiting to qualify for the gene therapy. The video, followed by a paddle raise, helped inspire over $500K in gifts to support the CRF’s $9M commitment to Advanced Therapeutics, an emerging field of biomedical research aimed at treating, curing, or even preventing disease, offering hope to countless families like the Flessners. crf.luriechildrens.org

Designing Spaces, Defining Lives
How Element Design Network turns personal stories into beautiful, functional homes.
WORDS BY JANIS MVK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEKAH WRIEDT RIDINGS
Laura Chappetto of Element Design Network works closely with her clients to uncover and define their unique home design styles. An avid believer that every home should reflect the individuality and lifestyle of its owner, she ensures her work doesn’t impose her own aesthetic but instead reflects the soul and personality of the people living in the space.
“A home is a representation of those who live in it and my mission is to make my clients have a sense of pride and ownership in the design of their homes,” she says. “I am just here to help facilitate the process of creating a space that makes clients take a deep breath and say, ‘I’m home.’”
Understanding that design can be challenging and daunting for some, Chappetto makes the entire process as effortless as possible. Her services include new design and remodeling, full-service solutions where construction is not required, and design collaboration. “Every client is different, and every project is different, so I customize my services to find where I am needed and let my clients explore their creative side,” she says. “Together we create the perfect space and always have fun during the process.”
Taking the time to understand how her clients live, what they wear, what they love, and what works and doesn’t work in their spaces, she thoughtfully creates warm, inviting interiors blending timeless design elements with modern touches. One consistent element in her work is the feeling she aims to create. “My projects
all have a feeling of effortless luxury,” she says. “I love a home that feels lived in and there’s no better compliment than people feeling at home in their own space.”
Function and balance are important in her design process. “Function needs to take precedence over everything else,” she says, “and a well-balanced room is a well-designed space.” As for design trends, she advises her clients to make sure the trend aligns with their personal style. “That’s when a trend can really stand the test of time,” she says.
She also encourages incorporating art into the home, whether it’s a cherished piece from a favorite trip, a meaningful memento from a significant life moment, or an exciting new purchase. “Artwork always plays an important role in personalizing a home,” she says. “I find that people tend to be afraid to start buying art, but it’s really the one thing that you should be able to look at and smile and if you find a piece that does that, you’ll love it forever.” She loves seeing more clients embrace adding their personality to their homes, with art playing a key role in the process.
For Chappetto, designing a home is more than just looks—it's about creating a space that holds her clients’ memories. "It is such a privilege for me to create a space that becomes the backdrop of my clients’ memories, and I want my clients to feel like their home was perfectly designed for their family," she says.

FLOOR COUTURE
MORE THAN JUST DÉCOR
Rugport leads the way in home glamour, comfort, and style.
WORDS BY JANIS MVK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP
For more than four decades, Rugport has been a trusted name in fine handmade rugs, offering timeless pieces that bring warmth and style to homes across Illinois, Michigan, and beyond. Established in 1979 by Ali and Houshi, Rugport now operates in three locations including Palatine, Illinois, and Petoskey and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Ali and Houshi have a deep understanding of what makes a home special. They recognize that a home is a place of comfort, where individuals feel most relaxed and at ease. This appreciation is reflected in every piece their showrooms offer, with a commitment to providing décor that is both respected and cherished. Rugport believes that the floor is much more than a place to rest one's feet. It's a blank canvas just waiting for beautiful décor.
However, Rugport is more than just a destination for exquisite rugs. The Palatine location offers a comprehensive range of services, including expert cleaning, restoration, and repairs—even for the most challenging projects. Additional offerings include customizations to ensure each rug complements any home’s style, alterations to refresh older rugs, professional stain removal, and top-tier appraisals. Rugport also serves as a trusted resource for rug education, assisting first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike at every step of the buying or restoration process.
With over 60,000 square feet of space and an inventory valued at more than $20 million, Rugport offers pieces to suit any home.
Whether the style leans toward fashionably avant-garde, aligns with current trends, or reflects a transitional aesthetic, the selection is designed to meet a variety of needs. Specializing in hand-knotted modern, contemporary, antique, masterpiece, and traditional oriental rugs, Rugport provides stunning options for any room.
Striving to ensure that every client leaves one of the three showrooms confident, Rugport ensures their clients are in good hands. The team is committed to going the extra mile in customer service and takes pride in educating clients on the purpose, style, and functionality that rugs bring to a home.
Rugs are not just floor coverings or places to wipe off shoes during the cold winters—they are the center point of any room. Just like the homes people live in, they hold memories. They are placed at the center where families gather around the dining room table each night after routine days of work and school. They are set in living rooms or dens while groups of friends have game nights or catch up after time away. They provide comfort when we climb the staircase at the end of a long day, warm our feet after an unwinding shower, and guide us through hallways during the night.
Rugport knows this. With this intention, they ensure each client leaves their showrooms with not just a new rug, but a piece that will hold their memories for years to come.
