EDITOR’S NOTE
W
elcome to December, may it bring peace to your family and peace on earth. We have the perfect issue for the moments of time you’re able to steal for yourself as you make magic for others. Did you have a chance to visit the House Beautiful Whole Home when it was open for tours? When I was growing up 505 South County Line Road always seemed like a magical house. It inspired us all to dream big, which is exactly what 15 designers from around the country did when they transformed the estate. We’ve captured some of the highlights in A Fine Vintage and caught up with Julie Jordan Laux, who led the extensive project in Leader of the Pack. Get to know the elegant, gorgeous Qi Holtzman in Country Vs. Town. Qi is a former dancer of world renown, a linguist, wife, mother, and Vice President of Client Engagement and Experiences at CD Peacock. She is someone we should all aspire to be like. This issue is full of ideas. Check out the Design section where the wonderful Lauren Ashley Allan shares her philosophy on tablescapes. There’s a fun, locally focused Gift Guide too. Dinner Date takes us to Michael Jordan’s in Oak Brook, where the vibe is a little more casual than some of the other local steakhouses and the food wins every time. DINNER
As you shop for holiday gifts remember that jewelry and timepieces are always appreciated. Razny Jewelers has been winning awards this year as they take wonderful care of their customers. Be sure to stop in during the Hinsdale Christmas Walk or make an appointment to check off your guest list with a little sparkle. Hindman Auctions is another unique spot for gift shopping, especially for self-gifting. Collector’s Corner is always one of my favorites for learning about interesting objects. Learn more about Chicago’s own CD Peacock and meet the dynamic father / daughter team at the helm in our Publisher’s Profiles. Living & Giving is packed this month with all the action from fall parties and happenings. Take a peek and enjoy the photos. It’s always a joy to showcase the hard work of local philanthropists. And with that, the 2023 season comes to a close. See you in the new year. Gratefully, MICHELLE CROWE Editor-in-Chief michelle@jwcmedia.com

BOOK IT THE NEIGHBORHOOD HOTEL’S second Chicago location, and largest to date, offers a chic, peaceful nest in the heart of the city’s LITTLE ITALY neighborhood. There are Sferra linens and cozy throw blankets made by The Weaving Mill, Malin + Goetz bath products, Metric Coffee, and Moccamaster Brewers, “We take coffee very seriously,” says Experiential Capital Group (ECG). Founder Jonathan Gordon, The hotel is located in the former National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame brought to life by The Neighborhood’s design partner, Rebel House. While using the building’s history as their guiding principle, Rebel House channeled a fresh modern concept with hints of mid-century Italian influence. Throughout the hotel and in the suites, pops of color complement soaring ceilings. They leaned on the unique history of the culturally vibrant area and the rich tradition of Italian design, bringing in sleek lines, simple geometric shapes and a joyful color palette that honors the impact of Italian design, while creating a vibe that’s fresh and compelling. “Rebel House created furniture just for this space, making choices that are thoughtful and almost better than home,” says Gordon. With proximity to the Illinois Medical District, including Rush University Medical Center and UI Health, and the United Center, the location is as convenient as it is charming. theneighborhoodhotel.com/location/little-italy-chicago

COUNTRY VS. TOWN
QI HOLTZMAN
grew up in Northeast China. Her father played classical cello, and her mother was a theater actress, allowing her to watch countless performances as a child and all throughout her adolescence. “The arts were ingrained in me, and after watching so many performances, my inner desire was to become a dancer. Every time I heard my dad playing the cello, I couldn’t help but dance along to the melody,” she says. Fortuitously, a local professional dance teacher approached Qi about her potential interest in professional dancing school. It took some convincing, but her parents finally agreed to take her to audition at one of the most prestigious dance schools in the nation. Qi was accepted, one of only 12 girls and 12 boys between the ages of 10 through 12 throughout the entire country. With the support of loving parents, 11-year-old Qi left to pursue her passion. After extensive training, at age 22, Qi received the national highest award for a professional artist, the Wen Hua Award. She traveled the world as a principal dancer for four years with the Chinese National Dance Company and collaborated with world-class artists Zubin Mehta and Yi-Mou Zhang. In 1999 Qi arrived in the United States, received a scholarship to the California Institute of Arts and earned a Master of Fine Arts. Upon graduation from Cal Arts, Qi opened her own dance school, and nurtured it into two dance schools with hundreds of students. A few years later, she and her husband Steven met in Pasadena, California. Qi, Steven, and their daughter live in Hinsdale, where they enjoy the natural beauty of each season unfolding. Previously, they lived in Switzerland, where Qi studied German, achieving fluency. To immerse herself in the intricacies of jewelry, she trained with the Gemological Institute of America to advance her knowledge of gemology. Before the family left Switzerland, Qi was invited by Seymour Holtzman, Steven’s father, to join the CD Peacock family business. She shines in the role of Vice President of Top Client Engagement and values the friendships made with amazing clients and the dedicated sales team. “We are grateful to be in the business of celebrating unforgettable moments and delivering happiness to our clients.” Qi embodies her guiding principle of remaining committed to life-long learning. She thrives in any country and continues to develop new passions. “Raising our daughter has been one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. Over the years, I’ve learned how to care for her in the best ways possible. Whether it’s learning to knit to make items like hats and dolls or cooking new recipes for her, she challenges me, and I continue growing and transforming as a mother, which also teaches me to be a more understanding person.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD HAIR AND MAKEUP BY MARGARETA KOMLENAC CD PEACOCK JEWELRY

Mantra? Every challenge is an opportunity to rise. On your reading stack? Chinese Herbal Medicine, A Woman Makes a Plan: Advice for a Lifetime of Adventure, Beauty, and Success, Growing Up With the Impressionists: The Diary of Julie Manet What organizations do you support? I am passionate about the performing arts. The moment Steven and I landed in Chicago, I connected with the Joffrey Ballet and joined the Women’s Board of the Joffrey Ballet. CD Peacock has been a proud sponsor of the Joffrey Ballet since 2021. We love children and our community. CD Peacock supports the Hinsdale Community House to aid the development of the Youth Program and Counseling Center. CD Peacock is also a contributor to Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois (LCFS). Together, we hope we can make a difference in protecting children, strengthening families, and building futures for those who have experienced trauma. Our family works together to serve the community, and we are proud to be Chicagoans. Favorite Workout? Pilates on the reformer—I love to challenge myself. Best grooming tip? Never go out without sunblock. Guilty pleasure? Dark Chocolate. Music you love? Classical music. Yoyo Ma’s music is food for the soul. The cello is my favorite instrument; it sounds so beautifully deep-rooted. Favorite holiday tradition? I have experienced and celebrated many festivals and events in multiple countries with a lot of international friends. As a child, I fondly remember my mother diligently sewing me a new set of clothes to wear on New Year’s Day every year. On New Year’s Eve, I felt like almost everyone in China was celebrating simultaneously. There is a live broadcasting concert 5 to 6 hours long every year. During that time, the streets were empty; it seemed as though every Chinese citizen was watching the concert, enjoying time with family, and making traditional Chinese delicacies such as dumplings, fish and long noodles, to bring hope, happiness, comfort, and prosperity into the New Year. When it was past midnight, I particularly remember steaming dumplings being served with the sound of firecrackers outside. This warm feeling has always remained special in my heart. So now, no matter what country we celebrate the New Year in, I always make dumplings for my family, and I hope our daughter will carry on this tradition.
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IN TOWN Your style is I am in Lululemon most of the time if not at work. I am very active, and I love nature. Favorite walk On weekends, I walk to town to grab a coffee at Café La Fortuna. I usually pick up the New York Times and Chicago Tribune from Danette at Hinsdale News Agency. Then, I just walk around town and take in the sights. Can’t leave the house without Hermès Rose Ikebana. Place to celebrate Home. Best quick bite or hidden gem Toni Patisserie and Café Favorite festival or special event Hinsdale Kitchen Walk and The Holiday Ball. The best thing about the town The town is filled with beautiful trees, nice people, clean streets, quiet neighborhoods, and many kids who can still walk or ride bikes to school. The perfect day Having friends over and making dinner with my family.
What is your style? Clean lines, simple and bold. Favorite Walk The Lake Shore by Navy Pier. Can’t leave the house without? Sneakers. Best quick bite or hidden gem Chef Paul Virant just opened a restaurant in Chicago, Gaijin. It is a hip place for Japanese Okonomiyaki and a fun experience with friends and family. I also enjoy his restaurant Vistro Prime in Hinsdale. Favorite festival or special event The premier of the Joffrey Ballet each year. The best thing about the town The liveliness of the city; I love the fast-moving pace. The perfect day is Riding bikes and exploring something new in the city with family.

THE CLOSET TREASURE HUNTER
Luxury handbags & couture auctions with Hindman’s Tanner Branson.
I
WORDS BY TANNER BRANSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
often say that my favorite place in the home is the closet. Going into clients’ closets throughout the country, I often feel like a treasure hunter who gets to uncover hidden gems and give them new life by bringing them to auction. I love nothing more than when clients share the experiences they had wearing their pieces and the smiles on their faces at the prospect of someone else getting to create new experiences with them. I come from the fashion world having worked for some of the top luxury houses and my new role at Hindman gives me the opportunity to combine my endless passion for luxury and deep knowledge of fashion history. The auction world is where I am meant to be. From a young age, I had an interest in auctions, so to say this role is a dream job is an understatement. I began my time in Chicago attending Columbia College Chicago where I received a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Business. Though I was a business major, I spent a considerable amount of time in their fashion study collection, where I was exposed to haute couture garments and had the opportunity to familiarize myself with examples of high fashion, learning about construction techniques, and much more. This has greatly contributed to my professional career and provided me with a sharp eye that I now use every day at Hindman. My role as Head of Sales and Specialist in Hindman’s Luxury Handbags & Couture department allows me to curate luxury sales with an assortment of couture treasures that speak to the latest trends not only in fashion but in collecting. Our Holiday Fashion auction represented the first auction I’ve gotten to curate from start to finish and I couldn’t have been more excited. The sale was filled with luxury handbags and examples of high fashion from leading names in luxury, whether bidders were hunting for an exotic skin Hermès bag or a unique dress for their next holiday soirée. I was particularly fond of the fabulous collection of Hermès Birkin 35 Shiny Birkin and Kelly bags offered Porosus Crocodile, 2007 in the auction, especially an exceptional Hermès Birkin 35 in Shiny Porosus Crocodile. This very rare two-tone bag was one of the finest examples of an exotic skin Birkin that I have ever had the good fortune to handle and is sure to become a favorite of the buyer. For those with an avantgarde flair, there were rare examples of Issey Miyake,
Tanner Branson, Head of Sales and Specialist in Hindman’s Luxury Handbags & Couture department
Yohji Yamamoto, and Jean Paul Gaultier, taking bidders on a style journey spanning more than forty years. Most of the collection was purchased through the former Oak Street fashion emporium Ultimo, a boutique that was well-known for outfitting the dangerously chic. The collection was steeped in fashion and Chicago history and even though Ultimo is sadly long gone, the pieces stood the test of time. Speaking of history, Holiday Fashion also featured a singleowner collection of Bob Mackie gowns, including a duplicate of the iconic gown that Cher wore to the 1985 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which she attended with Mackie himself. The sequin-encrusted and bugle-beaded gown was perfect for anyone looking to make an unforgettable impression at a holiday gala or New Year’s Eve party. I wake up every day in disbelief that my job is to handle such incredible pieces. I hope one day you’ll give me the pleasure of hunting for treasure in your closet but if you’re still in a buying mood, have I got just the piece for you! RAZNY JEWELERS AWARDED INDEPENDENT WATCH RETAILER OF THE YEAR:
We are proud to have been named the Independent Watch Retailer of the Year at the first-ever U.S. WatchPro Awards in New York City. Over seven decades of dedication, an unwavering commitment to perfection, and a deep love of jewelry making and timekeeping have marked our journey to this award. This award is a testament to the power of storytelling through jewelry, and we promise to continue crafting pieces that capture the essence of love, art, and imagination. Thank you to WatchPro, the judges, and everyone who contributed to this remarkable celebration. RAZNY JEWELERS NAMED TOP 100:
Razny Jewelers is honored to have made this year’s Hot 100 list in the Retail Power Players category. Published by WatchPro magazine, the premier publication for news on timepieces and jewelry for collectors around the globe, this designation is reserved for elite American jewelers who display exceptional growth and success.
TALKING TIMEPIECES:
Editor and founder of WatchPro, Rob Corder, sat with Stan Razny to talk timepieces, discuss the everchanging landscape of the luxury watch market, and breakdown how family-owned independents provide the value that direct-to-consumer brands struggle to match. Deemed “The Big Interview,” it also showed how seriously Razny Jewelers takes its position as the only authorized dealer for Patek Philippe in a territory that stretches across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin, surpassing 220,000 square miles.*

O
ver 75 years ago, the Razny family immigrated to America with the vision of building a legacy they could pass on to their children. Today, they are proud to have developed their dream into something far grander than they could have imagined. We recently spoke with Ingrid and Christine, second and third-generation owners of Razny Jewelers, about their history and mission. Here’s what they shared. How have you become known as Chicago’s source for luxury? We bring the world’s most brilliant diamonds, fine jewelry, and timepieces by Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, and Breitling to the front doors of Chicago’s families and communities. You’ve said that hospitality has been key to your growth. Why? From our watchmakers to our sales associates, we are all dedicated to curating a shopping experience that is comfortable and inclusive – no matter which Razny Jewelers location you visit. This mission is aided by the fact that we understand our clients because we are their neighbors, friends, and peers. What has been the result of the symbiotic relationships you’ve built with diamond sources in Africa? We offer the widest selection of exceptional diamonds without the extra cost that comes from relying on middlemen. We can also guarantee that our points of supply meet international standards of ethics and give priority to the health and happiness of locals. We are incredibly proud to know that our client’s future heirloom is helping to support the people and lands that give us the treasures that have become our passion.

A photo in the Hinsdale Historical SociJulie and DJ Laux ety’s archives reveals that the home originally in the kitchen featured a third floor with a ballroom and boxing ring. The top story was removed in 1934. The ivy-covered walls, light-filled rooms, and recreation options including a pool and bowling alley, the house is an entertainer’s dream. Though renovated under the eye of architect David Adler decades later, it is truly of another era. The kitchen was small and outdated and the new owner was quickly overwhelmed by the scope of work needed to make the home workable for today. Laux took charge. She pitched the rehab project to House Beautiful, and with the tightest timeline imaginable, committed to renovating much of the home in time for a special year-end issue of the magazine. “There was zero flexibility in the timeline. We knew when things needed to happen and we made them happen,” she says. Laux’s son, DJ, general manager of the Peace by JJH division of the company, stepped into the project manager role and together with the rest of their staff served as boots on the ground for the 15 designers working on rooms. J. Jordan Homes took on the kitchen. “We combined five rooms to create the new kitchen,” Laux says. “It is absolutely a kitchen of today in this home with a storied past.” Top designers from across the country completed other rooms including the entryIndustries, Minted, Monogram, Morris & Co., O’Brien Harway, bowling alley, sitting room and more. Dashing All The Way Every step counts at Jingle Dash, the merriest stroll around. WORDS BY MICHELLE CROWE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR AND MAKEUP BY MARGARETA KOMLENAC LOOKS FROM GAME SET STYLE

here’s no time like December. Between the parties and dinners, teas and pageants, the month passes by in a wink. Enter Jingle Dash, offering a morning of fresh air, family time, and precious hours to get in those steps someplace other than the shops. For the third year, Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) is hosting the Jingle Dash 5K presented by Wellbeing Therapist on Sunday, December 10. Last year 250 runners participated. The hope is that at least 300 will lace up their running shoes this year. “We are thrilled to be bringing back the Jingle Dash 5K presented by Wellbeing Therapist for the third year in a row. Each year the event gets bigger and better, and we are so excited to get the community out to Robbins Park to get into the holiday spirit and help raise money for the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club,” says HJWC President, Lauren Glandt. She continues, “For the first time, we are excited to have a partner and marquee sponsor, Wellbeing Therapist, headlining and supporting the event, along with some other wonderful sponsors like Burn Bootcamp and Therapeutic Health who support our organization and its mission.” Having sponsors that believe in mental and physical health is a great partnership for the Jingle Dash.” The event is helmed by the group’s Health Committee in partnership with the Benefit Committee. This dynamic team has arranged for Santa and Mrs. Claus to attend along with locals. The
famous pair will pose for photos at the end of the race route while runners revive with hot chocolate. Registration is open until December 9, and even if the family calendar is feeling packed, making time to get out and walk is good for everyone. Anne Appel, founder and owner of Wellbeing Therapist and Hinsdale resident, shares, “I am honored to help support the wonderful community of Hinsdale by sponsoring the Jingle Dash. The event is a great opportunity to get together, support each other, and focus on fitness as we kick off the holiday season.” Festive gear is encouraged, and the emphasis will be on making spirits bright. That’s true in more than one way as Jingle Dash will raise funds for the worthy organizations selected for HJWC grants this year. In 2018, HJWC launched a Grant Fundraising model to help fund tangible items with a lasting impact for deserving organizations. The club has since raised $1.4 million dollars for non-profit organizations in Chicagoland and the Western Suburbs. Each year they provide an average of 20 grants valued between $1-$50,000 to organizations serving women and children. Grant money is awarded to organizations with needs for items and projects that can be used for many years to come. Vans, playgrounds, and building maintenance needs are examples of improvements made possible by the grants.
“We are thrilled to bring back the Jingle Dash 5k...”

GENERATIONS OF GEMS
Steven Holtzman and Chelsea Holtzman Lawrence carry on the multigenerational, family-owned, and family-run traditions of the fine jewelry retailer CD Peacock. WORDS BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
E
arly in 1837, Elijah Peacock and his wife, Rebecca Haylock, immigrated to Chicago from the Isle of Chatteris, Cambridge, England. Soon after arriving Peacock opened the House of Peacock on Lake Street, a jewelry store that still stands as the oldest and most enduring retailer in Chicago’s history. Elijah eventually handed control of the company to his son, Charles Daniel, who renamed it C.D. Peacock, and subsequent generations of Peacocks ran the company for well more than a century. The company eventually fell on hard times under new ownership and was slated to shut down in 1993 when jewelry industry veteran Seymour Holtzman took ownership and revived CD Peacock with the same multigenerational, family-owned vision of its founder and original owner. Seymour’s son, Steven Holtzman, a seasoned distribution and luxury brand builder, joined CD Peacock. In 2022 he assumed the role of Vice Chairman. Steven’s daughter, Chelsea Holtzman Lawrence, joined CD Peacock in 2017 as Vice President of Communications and Marketing. “When my father called and asked me to join the business, my wife and I, along with our youngest daughter, were living in Switzerland,” Steven says. “At the time my eldest daughter, Chelsea, was already working for CD Peacock. As I considered joining the company and relocating, I realized that I was not simply being asked to build a business, but to carry on a legacy, much like the Peacock family had done before ours.” Chelsea Holtzman Lawrence’s husband, Brandon Lawrence, worked with CD Peacock in 2016 when her grandfather, Seymour, brought him in to redesign the company’s online presence and marketing. “I was drawn to the opportunity to learn from my grandfather’s extensive history in the industry and my husband’s ability to bridge that into current technology,” Chelsea says. “I knew it was a special opportunity to have multiple generations of the family working together to elevate the company.” Steven has extensive experience in the watch industry, hav-
ing been involved in sales, manufacturing, distribution, the creation of his own brand, and collecting high-end timepieces for most of his life. “The world of luxury has always fascinated me, and I find jewelry complements watches perfectly,” he says. “Like watches, I greatly admire the artistry and dedication of jewelry craftsmen, and I appreciate the beauty of a perfectly conceived piece—few things are as elegant as flawless jewelry.” “The first time I experienced a true reverence for quality jewelry was when I was planning my wedding. My engagement ring belonged to my mother-in-law, and it has always felt like I’m carrying a piece of family with me,” Chelsea says. “Jewelry and watches are life milestones that carry memories, which is why I feel so honored when clients allow us the opportunity to be part of their story.” CD Peacock plans on opening a new flagship Mansion at Oakbrook Center in 2024, which Steven says is a testament to the company’s commitment and perseverance. He says CD Peacock has always been a part of Chicago and plans to continue that tradition. Furthering its commitment to Chicago, Chelsea spearheaded and manages the multi-year partnership as the Official Jeweler of the Chicago Cubs, which includes the naming rights to Wrigley Field’s Premier Entrance and sponsorship of the Cubs’ Player of the Month Award. “It’s both awe inspiring and humbling to be entrusted with the responsibility of preserving CD Peacock. Chelsea and I, along with the rest of the family working in the business, do not take this responsibility lightly,” Steven says. “Overseeing CD Peacock is important to our family, but it is also integral to our multi-generational clients.” “It’s incredible to work with my father and learn from his years in the industry,” says Chelsea. “My father is someone who just genuinely loves timepieces and jewelry, and that kind of passion is contagious.” Visit CD Peacock at cdpeacock.com.

THE STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS: STEP 5 — DIVISION OF MARITAL ASSETS AND DEBTS.
I
WORDS BY MICHONE RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
believe knowledge of the divorce process provides strength and peace of mind to those facing an often complicated and difficult time. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™. My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved and two distinct steps when no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts. In this month’s column, we examine the final component of the marital settlement agreement and the divorce itself—the division of marital assets and debts. This process begins by collecting financial information through the discovery process. The parties exchange financial affidavits and supporting financial statements so that both sides have enough information to define the financial situation accurately. The next step is creating a spreadsheet that shows the value of each marital asset and debt so that the total value of the estate can be determined and an equitable division that allows each spouse to walk away with a combination that adds up to roughly the same value and tax consequence, regardless of what they each retain. We start by
determining what marital debt, if any, exists. The secured debt is paired with the asset that it secures and the net value of the asset is figured into the spreadsheet. For example, if one party keeps the house, that party will also be keeping any debt associated with it. Next is credit card debt, unsecured personal loans, bank loans, debt consolidation loans, and student loans taken out for a child. The amount of marital debt present, regardless of whose name it is in, is added to the spreadsheet. However, whoever’s name the credit card is in will likely be the party responsible for paying that debt but they will either receive an asset of similar value or the other party will receive debt of a similar value to keep the ultimate division of assets equal. Next, we make a list of the marital assets that were acquired during the marriage. We categorize these assets based on the tax consequences that would occur if the asset was converted to cash. After all the assets and debts have been identified, the lawyers divide them. The assets that have no tax consequences (non-qualified), including checking accounts, savings accounts, cars, and the marital residence, often are offset with debts. Non-qualified assets and debts are the first group that gets divided. Qualified assets are assets that do have tax consequences when converted to cash. This typically includes retirement accounts, such as 401Ks, 403Bs, 457Bs, or traditional IRAs. Investment properties, stocks, and investment portfolios often have tax consequences as well, but what exactly those tax consequences are is often specific to each individual investment. While these tax consequences can be avoided when dividing the marital estate because transfers between spouses do not trigger a taxable event, it’s important to know what the tax consequences would be if the asset were converted to cash, because it will affect its future value. The next step is to determine which spouse will receive each asset and each debt. Generally speaking, the value of the assets and debts are divided evenly, unless the parties are negotiating with something else, like a larger maintenance payment, the length of maintenance, guilt from infidelity during the marriage, or guilt from choosing to end the marriage. Dividing the marital estate can be very simple, or very complex depending on the circumstances surrounding it and the mindsets of each party. The Strategic Divorce Process aims to simplify the division as much as possible as we believe it lowers the emotional, mental, and financial burdens of divorce. Michone Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234-4445, strategicdivorce.com.

DINNER DATE The vibe is casual and family-friendly
A PERFECT SWISH T At Michael Jordan’s Steak House in Oak Brook, the only thing more memorable than celebrating the legendary exploits of “His Airness” is eating one of MJ’s signature steaks.
WORDS BY PETER AND KATE MICHAEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
here’s no use burying the lead: Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse may be the most-impressive athlete-owned restaurant concept in the country. Elway. Arnie. Ditka. Brett Favre. They’re gold-jacket legends, one and all, but not a single one would make my list of hall-of-fame restaurateurs. When, after all, was the last time you ate at a restaurant with an athlete’s name on the marquee and didn’t feel the sudden urge to burn his or her jersey in effigy afterwards? Let’s be honest: Most athlete-run grilles and cocktail lounges are glorified tourist traps. I’ve eaten more sawdust-flavored burgers at sports bars owned by baseball players than I care to admit. I’ve eaten at restaurant run by championship golfers and Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks and guys who’ve hoisted the Stanley cup.

DINNER DATE
In almost every case, I exited wishing I’d made a field trip to Hardee’s and they’d had the good sense to stick with their day job. And then there’s MJ’s in Oakbrook. This one’s different—an outlier. I’d go so far as to say it’s a baller of a restaurant, which had us, by evening’s end, walking on air. What you won’t find at MJ’s is your typical fireplace-and-cherrywood ambiance. MJ’s isn’t that kind of steakhouse. The vibe is more casual and family friendly. The color scheme of the restaurant—midnight meets maroons—was clearly inspired by the Bulls black and red unforms. Entire walls are devoted to black-and-white photos of MJ in various stages of flight. And on some nights, the kitchen staff gifts diners posters of Jordan emblazoned with the letters G.O.A.T. to remind everyone who is the greatest basketball player of all time. Yet MJ’s manages to celebrate the achievements of its famous namesake without devolving into slavish sentimentality or overt hagiography. The food is the real lure, while the nostalgia regarding MJ’s glory days acting as little more than feel-good reminder of glory days past.
I don’t think we were prepared, for instance, to love executive chef Cein Cid’s crab cake as much as we did. Visually speaking, it’s a stunner. It’ll arrive at your table looking like a perfectly baked Southern Prime Delmonico biscuit. It’ll stand steak with baltwo standard samic ginger jus ring molds high, pan-friend and bronzed around its edges as if it’s been dipped in a lacquer of freshly browned butter. Crack into that thin veneer of crust and you’ll get at all the glory: sweet tangles and feather-shaped bits of crab meat, which tumble down to the plate into a miniature pool of Meyer lemon aioli. There are no cheap fillers—the goop and glue used by so many lesser steakhouses —to be found anywhere to be found in this preparation. This is exactly what you want from a steakhouse crab cake. Waves of flavor. First comes the crunch of that that pan-seared skin. Then the sweet spray of briny crab meat. And then a final undercurrent of citrus, delicate as a spritz of fresh-squeezed lemon. Good luck finding a more satisfying crab cake this side of the Florida Keys. I’d argue that the two seafood offerings we ordered at MJ’s were every bit as
Cocktails
JUMPMAN:
This may be the most iconic cocktail in Oak Brook. A frothy egg-white foam is spray painted with MJ’s famous Jumpman silhouette. It also happens to be one of the few pear-flavored tequila drinks I’d ever whip up at home. Imagine a pisco sour cross-bread with an Asian pear martini. Trust us, it’ll make you fly.
Crab cake
THE PERFECT PEAR:
Cincomarg: If you’re unfamiliar with the Cincoro Reposada Tequila, you’re in for a treat. There’s no other tequila quite like it; Think caramel-flavored tequila—creamy and nutty. It’s mixed here with a smoky agave, dry curacao, and a hint of lemon. Smooth as silk. H I N S D A L E L I V I N G 79

DINNER DATE Lake Superior Whitefish
impressive as its signature steaks. Our Lake Superior whitefish— two meaty oversize fillets—came drizzled with preserved lemon and brown butter. But ultimately, it was the dish’s briny relish—a piquant mash-up of caperberries, roasted almonds and tiny bits of fingerling potatoes—that I wanted to take home and bottle up for our next family fish fry. I’m not sure there’s anything on MJ’s appetizer list I wouldn’t order again. Slabs of double-cut bacon candied with maple syrup. A stellar Wagyu meatball platter. And, most impressive of all, the house’s signature garlic bread: Crispy planks of ciabatta bread, rubbed with garlic and glistening with oil. They’re stacked like a Jenga tower and then moated by thin blue-cheese dipping sauce, which tastes like a cross between a high-end Big Mac sauce and buttermilk-gorgonzola salad dressing. The Cornerstone Restaurant Group licenses or operates five different MJ steakhouse locations, which run the gamut from a
Michigan Avenue outpost in downtown Chicago to a global entry in South Korea. The restaurant is known for its “Steakmanship” program, a collection of premier steaks includes a 10-ounce Australian wagyu New York strip and $200-plus surf-and-turf steak flight, complete with butter-poached lobster and roasted garlic shrimp. Everything on that particular list is a special, but I’ve always been partial to MJ’s signature steak: a 45-ounce dry-aged porterhouse. The steaks at MJ’s are seasoned with kosher salt and black pepper, warmed to your desired temp, and then hit with the kitchen’s secret weapon: a brown butter-beef fat coating, which is twice as glorious as sounds. MJ’s dry-aged ribeye is one seriously unctuous steaks. Ours was encrusted with a slightly charred crust; a slightly pink ring of seared beef beneath it and an iron-red in the middle. If you opt for any dry-aged cut, expect all that beautifully controlled dehydration to give off a distinctive and delicious lilt of muskiness and campfire smokiness. We recommend you pair your steak with the starch of your choice—perhaps the four-cheese mac & cheese made from a blend of sharp cheddar, Grana Padano; American and mozzarella. And then finish the evening by ordering a slice of the house’s decadent 23-layer cake—inspired, of course—by the number MJ work on the back of his jersey. I don’t care if you’re a die-hard “Bad Boys Era” Pistons fan, who’s assembled the world’s largest collection of Bill Laimbeer bobbleheads. Or if you laid down a massive wager that the Jazz would beat the Bulls in the 1998 championship. Or if you’re a charter member of the LeBron James Society, and have dedicated your life to getting into fiery Twitter spats with anyone who claims Jordan is the true NBA G.O.A.T. If you’re a beef eater—or a seafood lover—MJ’s Steak House is going to deliver nothing but net. SET THE SCENE Create immaculate holiday vibes with just the right mix
W
WORDS BY LAUREN ASHLEY ALLAN
hen it comes to decorating for the holidays, surround yourself with what makes you happy. Bringing children into holiday traditions young and taking them through the design process make it more fun to celebrate holidays. It’s not just about buying the perfect décor or pumpkins from the store, it’s about taking the kids with you to a local farm, selecting an imperfect assortment together, and learning about where they come from… we mix colors, sizes, shapes. I am teaching them to have fun with scale and to be bold with their choices! It’s all about the experience and building family traditions.

Natural elements contrast with fine China
DESIGN
SIGNATURE TABLE I mix and match my fine China patterns from my wedding and collections passed down through generations for a fun, spontaneous vibe. Choose patterns that complement one another. Referencing the history of the pieces can make for great conversation. PATTERN MIXING Take risks and break the rules. This especially applies to fine China. If you don’t have enough of a particular place setting to accommodate the full guest list, mix and match China patterns and glassware for a look that is artful and eclectic. The soulful juxtaposition of metallic and winter whites is my go-to holiday palette. Tie it all together with linens and florals. Pattern mixing captures a sense of easy elegance and infuses even the most refined setting with an effortlessly chic spirit, keeping the mood fun and spontaneous. Antique glassware adds an elegant touch
Family heirlooms tell a story
UNEXPECTED ACCESSORIES From striped straws to brass and bejeweled bottle stoppers, setting the scene with spirited accents and expressive accessories channels an unexpected, distinct voice. Guests will remember the little things that make an event stand out. Elevated barware is my favorite place to splurge. It adds so much to the art of entertaining. Pieces that add sophistication with minimal drama are on my “must” list. PRIME PLAYLIST Music makes such a big impact on creating a great environment for your guests. Ask guests to submit a song request with their RSVP, then create a playlist customized for the party. I was first inspired to do this for our wedding, and we had so much fun!

SCENTS-SATIONAL Brighten the space and enhance the experience for our guests. Candles and room sprays can bathe the environment in rich, soothing tones. Before an event, try choosing a single scent to place about the space in entryways, powder rooms, and lounge areas. Stick to fragrance-free candles near food. I always start cooking before the guests arrive so the house smells inviting. @lauren.ashley.allan @laa_atelier

Over 500 guests attended the annual Wellness House Ball on Saturday, October 21. The Radiance Ball guests dined, danced, and donated to advance cancer wellness at The Geraghty Chicago. With exquisite golden light fixtures and a palette of burnished yellows and soft browns in an array of floral arrangements, the ambiance mirrored the warm and inviting feeling of Wellness House. Co-Chairs Meaghan Daly and Briana Murray kicked off the evening and shared their personal connection to the mission of Wellness House. Dinner was followed by an action-packed live auction and paddle raise, along with a touching video that told the story of how a breast cancer survivor, her husband, and daughter found strength and hope through individual and family counseling at Wellness House. The evening was capped off with a lively performance by local band favorite Déjà Vu. wellnesshouse.org

Auction items were very inventive; the opportunity to have your pet’s image on the side of a HHS van is an excellent example of the irresistible options. HHS has been wonderfully, wildly busy in their anniversary year, placing a record number of animals in forever homes from The Tuthill Family Pet Rescue & Resource Center and out in the community. CIS of Chicago serves Chicago public school students, surrounding students with a community of support to empower them to stay in school and achieve in life. The event brought together local philanthropists and corporate leaders to meet CIS’ founder and chairman, Bill Milliken. Bill’s activism began in the 1960s and led him to search for a comprehensive approach to helping young people. Jane Mentzinger, CEO of CIS of Chicago, and Bill reflected on how the model Bill created has positioned CIS of Chicago as a leading nonprofit organization challenging education and resource inequities and making a significant difference in the lives of young people.
