We were concerned at first because Russ’s price was more than half of his competitors quoted price. After our tour we were very comfortable with our decision. Installation day was quick and painless. Our house was left in great condition. I highly recommend this company!”

Suddenly, everyone is playing mahjong. This beloved pastime fosters friendships and strengthens the brain by encouraging pattern recognition and problem solving. A game more of skill than luck, mahjong requires both strategy and cooperation. There are also natural breaks between games that are ideal for conversing with tablemates. It might be time to pick up a set of tiles and learn the rules.

Do you have a mantra? Tomorrow isn’t promised, no better time than now. This mantra has been a solid compass for me, throughout my life. On your reading stack? just finished The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt… an eye-opening read for parents given the social media world we now live in. On deck, I’m excited to shift to a mystery All The Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham What organizations do you support? I am a Board Member for March Fourth (501c4) and Aftermath (501c3), since its founding following the Highland Park Tragedy in July 2022. Those who know me well, are familiar with my passion to reinstate bi-partisan legislation to better regulate automatic and semiautomatic rifles. In addition to keeping children and communities safe, the 501c3 arm of the organization is focused on fundraising to support victims, families and communities impacted by mass shooting tragedies. I’m also a huge advocate for organizations dealing with mental health and loss of loved ones. As someone who unexpectedly lost a mother (and father) in my 20s … I deeply believe in pouring time and resources into causes that sup-
port navigation through the grief process. What’s your signature entertaining style? This will vary based on the party and plan. I do love a daytime gathering where drinks and appetizers are flowing just as much as the conversation and laughs. If time allows, I have fun creating charcuterie boards and a simple tablescape. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? Before uttering a word: hot water and lemon first thing … then coffee. On days my schedule allows for a walk to and from Madison school, I’ve found such peace and gratitude in those simple few moments with my kids. We are fortunate to live in this special community and that occasional morning walk reminds me of just that. Music you love? Frequent morning playlists include: Maggie Rogers, Noah Kahan, Lake Street Dive, Benson Boone, Bon Iver. Favorite winter tradition or activity? The competitive figure skater in me cannot be shaken with age! We always make time to go ice skating down town each year. It started as a tradition when my husband and I were dating…and now we love to bring the kids.
WHEN IN TOWN WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
What’s your go-to outfit? By day: Leggings and “business” top of sort. By night: Silk dress or skirt, sweater, booties Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? If not my phone (which is camera/calendar/credit card/to-do list all in one at this point), it’s my sunglasses. Where do they know you by name? Honest answer? UPS. Our house has two fulltime working adults …so all shopping for the family is done online by yours truly. Returns are plentiful to say the least. Grateful every day for our nearby UPS and the wonderful staff there. Next best answer is Open Door in Clarendon Hills. We’ve been there often since they’ve opened, and I love the casual, welcoming atmosphere and wide selection. If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would you say? I grew up going to Hinsdale’s Christmas Walk with my mom, and after church on weekends we sometimes found our way to the downtown shops or Gateway Square. Nostalgia brought me back here to consider this location for my family’s next chapter in 2020. Between the charm, countless parks, vibrant downtown, top-rated schools, energetic community and giggling-kids running safely throughout tree-lined streets… Hinsdale provides a plethora of pinch me moments in close proximity to one of the BEST big cities in the world. Are you sold yet!?
What’s in your bag? Dior lip oil, Blistex, peppermint gum, phone, a rogue fidget toy from one of my children, and sunglasses. View that never gets old? Office view within the Aon Center –overlooking the lake + Maggie Daley + Millennium… OR…the riverbend as you walk Wacker and approach the Wells Street Bridge by the Merchandise Mart. Two favorite views, all seasons, can’t be beat. Best quick bite or hidden gem? Tilly Bagel. It’s on my mind more than I’d like to admit. Do you have a favorite museum? While I wish I visited more, the Art Institute always takes my breath away. Visiting mid-week and then off to Music in the Park at Millenium Park is a great way to play tourist in your own city. Best thing about town? The energy…on days I’m downtown I feel so energized by hustle and bustle. Also, it is just such a CLEAN and walkable big city with endless options of fantastic cuisine, shops, entertainment. Worst thing about town? Limited parking, maximum traffic…and rats! What is your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? I spent ~12 years in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview area single, engaged and married so several “favorites” have been featured in The Break Up. As a lover of romanticcomedies I appreciate the scenes and familiar settings in that one!

The start of a new year offers a powerful opportunity to reflect, reset, and plan for the life you truly want. It’s a time to evaluate what brings you peace, joy, and fulfillment—and, for some, this may include considering the future of your marriage.
The holiday season, with its unique pressures, often magnifies relationship challenges that might otherwise remain beneath the surface. If this past season left you feeling drained or uncertain, it could be the moment to ask yourself what changes you need to create a brighter year ahead.
Taking time to reflect on your marriage is an act of self-care and empowerment. It allows you to ask essential questions and gain the clarity needed to shape your future indefinitely. For some, this may mean deepening their connection with their spouse. For others, it could involve stepping away from a dynamic that no longer serves their well-being.
Reflection is the first step toward clarity and understanding what’s best for you—whether it’s recommitting to your relationship or choosing a new path. Clarity brings the confidence to move forward with purpose.
If divorce feels like a possibility, thoughtful planning is essential. At Strategic Divorce, we provide guidance at every stage, from exploring options to finalizing decisions, ensuring you feel confident and supported throughout the process.
Our approach centers on your unique needs and priorities. We demystify the legal aspects, help you understand your rights, and empower you to make informed decisions. Beyond legal advice, we offer strategies to protect your family and minimize conflict, ensuring the process is as smooth and constructive as possible.
With personalized, compassionate support, we guide you toward solutions that align with your goals, helping you build a foundation for the future.
Deciding whether to stay or leave a marriage is never easy, but you don’t have to face it alone. Whether you’re ready to act or just beginning to explore your options, Strategic Divorce is here to help. Our free consultations offer a safe space to discuss your concerns and plan your next steps.
While change can feel overwhelming, it’s also an opportunity to create a life that reflects your worth and values. By this time next year, you could find yourself in a place of greater peace— whether that means rediscovering harmony in your marriage, creating a healthier environment for your family, or caring for your own well-being.
This New Year, prioritize clarity, courage, and self-care. Whatever path you choose, know that you have the strength to face it—and the support you need is just a phone call away.

Kelly Webb Roberts takes us behind the scenes of planning for the Chicago Auto Show and First Look for Charity
Some traditions remain the same, which is the appeal. Others, evolve with the times and become better and more dazzling every year. Such is the case with the Chicago Auto Show, which this year is led by Hinsdale’s own Kelly Webb Roberts.
This mother of two has deep ties to the auto industry, where she began her career working with dealership clients after earning her undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College and an MBA from Loyola. Her background in accounting and finance brought her back to the Webb family of dealerships. She has been President for 10 years, overseeing Chevrolet dealerships in Oak Lawn and Plainfield, Hyundai dealerships in Highland and Merrillville, Indiana, and a Genesis dealership in Merrillville, Indiana.
That’s an impressive full-time job and enough for most people,
but Kelly is a bit of a trailblazer. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA) for eight years, serving as Chairwoman of the Board in 2023-2024 and Chairwoman of the Chicago Auto Show in 2025.
Humble and focused, she doesn’t love to mention that she is the first woman to hold these roles, preferring the results to speak for themselves, but she is indeed the first.
“Kelly is the first Chairwoman of both the trade association (in 120 years) as well as the Chicago Auto Show (in 90 years). Her attention to detail is unparalleled, which, when combined with her analytic background, challenges us to raise the experience for every guest,” says Jennifer Morand, CATA President and Auto Show General Manager.
Jennifer is the first female President of the Association. “This is a unique opportunity in having two women leading the association and the auto show. I’m very proud and it shows the direction of the times,” she says. Both women acknowledge the support and camaraderie of their male colleagues and supporters.
First staged in 1901, the Chicago Auto Show is the largest auto show in North America and has been held more times than any other auto exposition on the continent. This year marks the 117th edition of this winter doldrum-busting institution.
Held in McCormick Place, the show features multiple world
“This is a unique opportunity in having two

and North American introductions and the complete range of domestic and imported passenger cars, trucks, sport-utility vehicles, minivans, and experimental and concept cars. It’s logical to think that the car brands bring this incredible event together. Yet since 1935, the CATA, which is the nation's oldest and largest metropolitan dealer organization, has produced the Chicago Auto Show.
As Chairwoman, Kelly is devoted to every attendee. A great deal of her focus is on making First Look for Charity the very best it can be. As one of Chicago’s largest one-day fundraisers, First Look raises close to $3 million dollars each year and has given more than $63 million to the charities it supports since its inception.
“First Look exists because of the Chicago Auto Dealers. Our
trade associate and 400 dealers put on this night to give back to the 18 charities. It’s awesome for these organizations because they just need to sell the tickets. We do the planning and make sure everyone who attends enjoys themselves,” Kelly says, adding, “It’s a good date night in the dull month of February.”
Each Director picks a charity to support. Kelly’s is Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. This renowned institution has been extra special to the Roberts family since the incredible teams there healed her daughter, who was born with a heart defect.
Kelly mentions The Violet Foundation for Pediatric Brain Cancer, which was founded by member Steve Napleton in honor of his daughter as a newer beneficiary of First Look.
“Whether you choose to support one of the charities with your full ticket purchase, or have your money split evenly between all the organizations. It’s meaningful support either way,” Kelly says.
“A cherry on top is the fact that we’re giving away two brandnew vehicles to two lucky attendees: a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox
EV and a 2025 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy Night Edition, compliments of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Chevy Dealers and the Chicago and Northwest Hyundai Dealers,” Kelly added.
“Even if you’re already a supporter of one of the charities, why not maximize your donation and get a great evening out of it?” Jennifer adds, “Enjoy delicious bites spanning many types of cuisine and enjoy festive beverages. It’s a wonderful evening out doing a lot good for these organizations that support local individuals in need.”
Kelly adds, “A lot of people will be surprised by First Look for Charity. There’s food, live entertainment, and shiny new cars. All our indoor test tracks will be running as will the outdoor test drives. Come experience it all with shorter lines and a real sense of excitement.”
The Chicago Auto Show takes place February 8 – 17 at McCormick Place. First Look for Charity is February 7 from 7 – 11 p.m. Purchase tickets and designate your support at FirstLookforCharity.org.
Over the past 32 years, the Chicago Auto Show’s First Look for charity benefit has raised more than $63 million for local charities. This year, the money raised at first look will benefit these 18 local organizations.

Starting in the pages of Vogue, Melissa Skoog’s storied career in luxury PR has taken her from the East Coast to the West Coast to the Magnificent Mile.
In August of 1995, Chicago native Melissa Skoog set her sights on the Big Apple, giving herself a tight, one-month time frame to move to Manhattan and find a job. It so happened that a family friend had made introductions to Vogue’s advertising department, thus setting her career on an unstoppable path.
Skoog’s interview roster read like Women’s Wear Daily’s Best Dressed List, including famed stylist, Elizabeth Saltzman, who almost 20 years later is still at the top of her career. Spoiler alert: Skoog didn’t get that job, so she returned home to Chicago and began working in office management. Little did she know that this “failure” would lay the foundation of a legendary PR career.
Six months later, her phone rang with a call from Condé Nast—if Skoog could manage to uproot her life and move to New York within three weeks, she had a job as a rover between the
magazines’ departments. On her first day of work, Skoog learned Anna Wintour—legendary gatekeeper of all things in the fashion world—needed an assistant. Within a week of temporarily filling that role, Skoog officially became Wintour’s second assistant. If these events recall the plot of The Devil Wears Prada movie, Skoog agrees. “Yes, it was just like Anne Hathaway’s character,” laughs Skoog. The cinematic similarities continued—she was responsible for bringing Wintour her coffee and delivering the “book” (a mock-up of the magazine) to her home. Within a month the first assistant (Emily Blunt’s character) left, and Skoog stepped into that role where she stayed for the next two and a half years in a position that afforded her extraordinary exposure to fashion industry greats. When Skoog was ready to move to her next role, she stayed in-house, becoming an accessories editor at Vogue
While at a business dinner in New York City with Banana Republic’s PR team, she boldly shared what she would have done
differently with their newly released handbag design. At the time, another legendary fashion guru Mickey Drexler was at the helm of Gap, Inc. (owner of Banana Republic), and shortly after the dinner, the team reached out to Skoog saying they had re-made the bag to her specifications. Skoog soon relocated to the Bay Area to work in-house for Banana Republic as a merchant buying ready-to-wear categories such as sweaters and knitwear for the brand.
But New York was calling her back to its storied streets and the world of luxury fashion. Wintour recommended Skoog to the house of Prada, where Skoog stepped into a role of overseeing U.S. communications for the brand and its subsidiary Miu Miu.
“Mrs. Prada is extraordinary,” says Skoog of the head of the 100-year-old Italian fashion house. Soon, however, love intervened. Within six months of meeting, Skoog married her husband and together they moved to Chicago for a start-up opportunity for his career. Back in her hometown, Skoog found a lack of niche luxury public relations, so taking a leap she started her own—the eponymously named Skoog Co. With her three-week old son at her side, Skoog and her team opened 41 stores for LOFT in 41 new markets. “Learning of
my move to Chicago, my friends in luxury started calling with regional PR needs for Gucci, Tiffany & Co., and more,” says Skoog. “We supported the launch of Shinola and launched the San Francisco-based brand Rothy’s. I was a national person sitting in a regional market.”
“At Skoog, we are strategists discovering what is going to move the needle for your messaging; bringing your brand into the biggest light and driving sales,” Skoog explains. “That’s our goal.”
Now, creating her own storied brand, Skoog Co. works with the best of the best in luxury, home, and food— Hermès, Mark Cross, Curio Home Goods, Vosges HautChocolat—and is the first U.S. agency on record for the British brand Boden. “From rebrands and store openings to press placements and influencer campaigns,” Skoog shares, “your brand has a story to tell; and we make sure the world is paying attention.”
“We focus on lifestyle, food, and fashion. And we have a total blast,” says Skoog.
With such incredible heights scaled already, it seems that Skoog’s story is just beginning.

Clarendon Hills resident Casselyn Tertell loves living life as a wife, a mother, and an accomplished real estate broker. And yes, she most certainly knows how lucky she is to live such a life.
“To be honest, we're all very fortunate to live in a place where we don't have to worry about taking our children to the doctor if they're sick,” Tertell tells Hinsdale Living. “Sometimes, it's important to remind people that outside of our little bubble is a whole other world not far from us that could use our help.”
It's this realization that propelled Tertell and fellow CHIW member Kafi Matusiewicz, who is also a fulltime working wife and mother, to take on the demanding role of Co-Chairs of the 2025 Annual Light Up the Night Benefit, taking place on February 1st at The Westin Lombard. Having raised over $340,000 last year, the annual event shines a spotlight on the financial needs of the Angel Harvey Family Health Center, which ‘offers healthcare services and education to medically underserved and vulnerable Chicagoans.’
“I really feel this (event) is an opportunity for the entire town to come together,” explains Matusiewicz. “It’s an extremely important cause that is really near and dear to all of our hearts.”
Featuring keynote speaker Heidi Ortolaza-Alvear, the IWS Chief Executive Officer, this year’s event will feature a Masquerade Ball theme which is sure to bring out the creativity within each and every one of the night’s attendees.
“It's up to the invitee to decide how far they want to go in terms of the theme, but our vision is that we want you to feel like you're stepping into a grand ball type of aesthetic,” explains Matusiewicz of the event whose dance floor will be most certainly propelled by the sounds of a seven-piece orchestra. “We're focusing in on an elegant, luxurious style delivered via the use of dark colors such as burgundies and navy and black.”
And while the theme of this year’s much-anticipated event has changed from last year, the venue in which it will be held has not.
“The great part about doing it at the same place for a second time is we can take all of the learnings from last year, and adjust the event accordingly to be inline with our theme for this year,” explains Tertell, who has been a vital member of the Clarendon
Hills IWS for the past two years.
Yet another much anticipated piece of the Gala always seems to be the live auction, which will once again be led by the always rousing personality of Dan Campbell from Raising Paddles. But upon walking into the event, attendees will most certainly notice a brand-new piece of the live auction festivities.
“This year, we are also doing something called Mystery Boxes which can be purchased with your Gala ticket,” says Matusiewicz. “They will be a hundred dollars each and what is inside of them is a mystery, but there will definitely be some big-ticket items. They will all be worth their weight! When you arrive, you get to pick out your Mystery Box, but make sure you get them before they’re gone, as they will likely sell out! (That is the hope!)”
Certainly, the logistics of putting on such a lavish event comes with its share of stresses for both Tertell and Matusiewicz, especially as both work full time and have little kids at home.
“It literally takes a village, and that village is Clarendon Hills,” remarks Matusiewicz, who too has volunteered her time with the Clarendon Hills chapter of IWS for the past three years. “The group that is working with us on this event this year has been just absolutely incredible. We have an amazing group of women, several of them who are new this year. In fact, 40% of our membership is new, so that's why this year has been a big change.”
But with changes comes new ideas, and that’s something both Tertell and Matusiewicz are excited to welcome when it comes to this year’s gala.
“I'm looking forward to seeing the impact that we can make,” says Matusiewicz.
The act of volunteering is also something that both accomplished moms like to demonstrate to their children.
“They might not like when Mommy goes to meetings at night, as that means we can't have dinner with them or put them to bed,” concludes Tertell and Matusiewicz. “But we explain to them, all the time, that Mommy's doing work for people who aren't as fortunate as we are. It's a message we know doesn't fully resonate with them at this age, but a message we know they are picking up, one little tidbit at a time.”
Light Up the Night is February 1. For tickets and more information, visit clarendonhillsinfantwelfare.org.

At Entourage in Downers Grove, the Vai family have assembled an all-star cast of old friends and restaurant compatriots, who have resurrected the golden age of big-tent ’90s-era American bistros with new ideas and culinary flair.
WORDS BY PETER MICHAEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
It’s a bustling Saturday night, with the holidays fast approaching, in downtown Downers Grove. And you’d swear half the town has found their way to Entourage, a sleek American-style bistro from the owners of Vai’s in Naperville. There are so many shiny, happy, hungry people waiting for a table that we’ve formed a snaking conga line that
stretches from the hostess table to Entourage’s gorgeously backlit black bar. Based on what I can tell, there are more Old Fashioneds being slung here tonight than at a Wisconsin supper club after a Packers win.
No one seems particularly perturbed about the wait, given that Entourage’s kegged Old Fashioneds could mellow a room
of full of brawling Real Housewives. Kudos to the beverage team for marrying two unexpectedly complementary bourbons: a spicy, clove-forward, high-proof Old Forester 100 and a sweeter, vanilla-tinged Further bourbon. When they meet, they dance like Astaire and Rogers.
The Vai family—patriarch Michael Vai and sons Anthony and Nicolas—have been in the restaurant business for three green generations, going all the way back to their grandpa Johnny. In addition to their new spot, the Vai Hospitality Group runs a pair of successful eateries: Vai’s Italian Inspired Kitchen & Bar and the original Entourage location, both in Naperville.
When the Vais opened their new location in Downers Grove with chef/partner Scott Wegener last summer, however, they defied convention and chose not to accept reservations. It wasn’t an arbitrary move, rather an attempt to incentivize sidewalk strollers and locals to pop in for a quick meal whenever the mood struck them.
Here’s the twist: You can call ahead and secure a spot on Entourage’s priority waitlist, which is the dining equivalent of
a Disneyworld fast pass. While this won’t guarantee you a seat the moment you walk in the door, it allows you to hopscotch in front of walk-ins.
The strategy seems to be working. Entourage strikes me as a throwback to the classy late-1990s, early-2000s “big tent” dining rooms you don’t see that much anymore. No one’s trying to chase Michelin stars or ape the latest trend. Entourage describes its menu as a collection of “modern American” fare, which focuses on American-as-apple-pie offerings but also leaves room for forays into Asia, Italy and continental Europe. It’s a melting pot: Vietnamese summer rolls, French onion soup and spicy chicken with tortellacci on one table and burgers, fried-cheese curds
and filet mignon sliders on another.
Many of our favorite dishes drew inspiration from Asia and the Pacific, especially Wegener’s ahi tuna starters: a half dozen bite-sized treats served dim sum style. Crispy bundles of sushi rice are frosted with mashed avocado and wasabi crema and topped by a scoop of melon-sized scoop of pink ahi tuna. Imagine an avocado
Weeping Angel:
It’s quite a show. We won’t ruin the bubbly surprise, but this frothy blend of Tequila, amaro, agave nectar and lime tastes like a more sophisticated margarita, but through some clever pyrotechnics manages to blow bubbles and perfume the table with the scent of rosemary incense. It pairs beautifully with a steak or burger.
Old Fashioned:
This kegged Old Fashioned blends Old Forester 100 and further Bourbon with demerara syrup, all-day bitters and an orange peel. Comes out of the keg frosty cold and casts a mesmerizing spell: balanced, smooth with unexpected bursts of citrus notes.
toast reformatted to look like a collection of miniature shumai bundles.
If you’re interested in building a meal around its Pacific offerings, Entourage’s miso Chilean seabass platter is a perfect follow up. It arrives torched to a crème-brûlée golden brown, subtly sweet but not as treacly as your typical Teriyaki glaze. Beneath the fish sits a shiitake-truffle mushroom risotto, its earthiness counterbalanced by stalks of charred broccolini. Much like the entire menu, it’s a dish that refuses to stay in any one predetermined lane, preferring to zig-zag between different continents.
“We are not pretentious people,” says Anthony. “We wanted Entourage to be a place where everyone feels like they can hang out. We go to great lengths to make sure no one feels out place or uncomfortable. We want people to come as they are and order what they want, no matter their tastes and budgets.”
As a child, Anthony showed little interest in following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. “My dad, when he was home, was a very present and loving father,” says Anthony, “But as I kid, he seemed to work 30 hours a day. For holidays and birthdays, we always seemed to celebrate them at whatever restaurant he happened to be working at.”
Then, while in high school, Anthony took a job working at the front desk at Clubhouse in Oak Brook, where his father was a managing partner. “I absolutely fell in love with it,” says Anthony. After attending Florida State, he realized no job could match the same chaotic high he felt trying to please 1,000 rowdy diners on a busy Friday night.
Later, when Anthony when was in his 20s, he approached his father with an idea: What if they joined forced and launched their own hospitality group? His dad’s eyes lit up like a neon sign on the Vegas Strip. Soon many of the people who’d previously worked with Mike reached out to broker a reunion, including Wegener, who’d worked as a chef and partner at Ditka’s Restaurant Group. Wegener missed his old friend and their halcyon days back at The Clubhouse.
Wegener built Entourage’s menu from the appetizer list up. There’s very little empty space on most of his plates. They staged more like what you’d see at a modern meat and three: one generously sized protein boarded by starches, veggies and often multiple sauces.
Over the years, Wegener developed a friendship with Fred Linz, who runs the family-owned Meats by Linz steak company. When you order a Linz steak, there’s no mystery as to where the beef was bred, butchered or packaged. The Linz family cuts out the middlemen and sells directly to Wegener and other chefs. That translates to savings for the Vai family, which is passed on to diners in terms of lower prices.
Some of Vai’s steak offerings are dry aged, others are wet aged, but they’re all dressed simply with salt and pepper. Wegener fires them in an infrared oven at and serves them simply with some caramelized and spectacular potato pavé.
For a classic steakhouse combo, order Entourage’s lump crab cake, made with big chunks of crab and just enough stuffing to stucco the seafood together. Follow it with a dry-aged Delmonico and close out your meal with a caramel-smothered slice of banana cream pie.
And if you happen to be a heat-seeker, here’s a secret tip. Ask for some of Johnny Vai’s secret hot pepper mix. Growing up, the Vie family always kept a little of grandpa’s “hot sauce” on the table: a tri of jalapeno, Fresno and habanero peppers sauteed with garlic, balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Anthony claims it’s his family’s go-to condiment, which is why it’s used as a centerpiece for their hot pepper chicken wings.
“It's absolutely wild to look back and reflect on all this,” says Anthony. “Sometimes, I can’t believe what we’ve been able to build. We are living our dream. But we have other ideas. Who knows what might come next?”

From serene seascapes to chic beach clubs, five unforgettable days on Barbados’ southern coast, where island serenity meets luxury relaxation.
WORDS BY GENEVIVE DUYEA
Imagine landing in Barbados, the Caribbean sun warming our skin as we step off the plane, filled with excitement for five days of bliss. Our journey begins at the lively Sea Breeze Beach House, where the island's vibrant spirit and the staff's warm smiles welcome us. The complimentary roundtrip airport transfer (because we booked direct) whisks us effortlessly to our first destination, a true testament to the hospitality that Barbados is renowned for.
Nestled along the serene southern coast, Sea Breeze Beach House is a hidden gem. As we pull up, friendly staff greet us with chilled towels and refreshing island-themed drinks, instantly making us feel at home. Our dedicated ambassador guides us to our oceanfront suite, pointing out the property's highlights and ensuring every detail of our stay is perfectly tailored.
Stepping onto our balcony, we’re greeted by stunning views of the beach, where gentle waves roll against the shore and palm trees sway in the breeze, accompanied by the soothing sounds of
local Bajan music. After settling in, we head straight to the beach, where we find a shaded spot under a vibrant umbrella. We relax in the warm sun, dipping into the inviting Caribbean Sea, while attentive waitstaff keep our glasses filled with refreshing drinks. This place feels like paradise.
For dinner, we choose open-air The Mahogany Lounge, the hotel’s beachfront restaurant. The laid-back evening is filled with Caribbean music, fresh local dishes, and the breathtaking sunset painting the sky in brilliant hues of pink and orange. We savor grilled red snapper with sides of plantains, rice, and peas, complemented by a glass of rum punch, setting the scene for a perfect evening. Later, we stroll along the beach under a blanket of stars, grateful for this beautiful beginning.
The next morning, the sound of waves awakens us, and we indulge in a delightful breakfast featuring tropical fruits and local specialties, including saltfish, scrambled eggs, and sweet fritters. Energized, we set off to explore Barbados! Wandering through
the vibrant streets of Bridgetown, we visit bustling markets and immerse ourselves in the local culture, where the warmth of the Barbadian people shines through in every interaction.
After returning to Sea Breeze, we enjoy a peaceful afternoon by the pool, sinking into a good book as the sunbathes us in warmth. The day culminates in a HobieCat sail along the coast, a serene way to witness the sun dipping below the horizon.
Our final evening at Sea Breeze is indulgent, featuring a multicourse meal at Cerulean, where local seafood and meat dishes are presented with a creative touch. As we reminisce about our adventures, the attentive service makes us feel truly special, and while we’re reluctant to leave, we’re excited for the next chapter of our journey at O2 Beach Club & Spa.
After a leisurely breakfast, we transfer to O2 Beach Club & Spa, where we’re greeted with a flute of champagne with a tropical twist and escorted to our stylish ocean-view suite, complete with a private balcony overlooking the turquoise sea. The resort exudes a chic beach-club vibe, perfect for unwinding in style. We start our afternoon in the adults-only pool, relaxing in cabanas with cocktails from the swim-up bar, and enjoying the endless blue views. Later, we stroll down to the beach for a swim in the crystalclear waters.
Before dinner, we take a tour of their partner property, The Rockley, a newly redesigned 49-room boutique hotel that recently
reopened. The Rockley combines a Miami Beach vibe with a focus on native authenticity. The lobby features work from local artists, and vibrant murals depict Bajan symbols like sheep, chickens, and dominoes, all beautifully integrated with Bajan phrases on pillows and toiletries. The renovation has introduced a trendy outdoor bar area, fostering a lively beach atmosphere with daily entertainment.
Dinner at O2’s fine dining restaurant, Oro, is an unforgettable experience. While live Caribbean music plays, we indulge in exquisite dishes that blend Caribbean flavors with global influences. Each course, from ceviche and crab cakes to grilled lobster, is a culinary delight, and we wrap up the night with sunset cocktails at the rooftop bar, Brisas, watching the sky transform into a vibrant canvas.
Mornings at O2 are magical, starting with beachside runs and rejuvenating yoga sessions as the waves provide a calming soundtrack. In the afternoon, we decide to try paddleboarding. Neither of us is particularly skilled, but the crystal-clear water reveals colorful fish swimming below, and we share laughter as we attempt to keep our balance. Afterward, we indulge in a massage at the spa, where any lingering stress melts away, leaving us blissfully relaxed. The day concludes with lounging on the beach, soaking in the beauty of Barbados.
One of our most cherished dinners is a private setup on the beach, just for us. Under a canopy of twinkling stars and with waves gently lapping nearby, it feels like a dream. We linger long after the meal, savoring the moment together, grateful for the impeccable service that has accompanied us throughout our stay.
As the evening sets in, we reminisce about our incredible journey. From the warm charm of Sea Breeze to the vibrant luxury of O2 and the lively spirit of The Rockley, our time in Barbados has been a dream come true. We leave with memories that feel like a slice of paradise, already planning our return to this enchanting island, touched by the warmth and kindness of the people we’ve met along the way.

Baumert Law is a powerhouse firm offering a unique blend of expertise across a broad range of legal services, including family law, estate planning, real estate, and business and intellectual property law.
The firm was initially founded by Aggie Baumert, a highly respected and exceptional attorney in family law, and later expanded when her husband, Michael Baumert, joined, bringing his stellar reputation in business and IP law from a prominent, high-profile firm. Together, with their team of accomplished experts, they guide clients through both personal and professional challenges, providing support and guidance at every step.
Baumert Law was founded to provide legal services that support individuals’ personal and professional successes from purchasing a home to starting a business. “Broadly, we practice law in the key areas that define an individual, a family, or a business,” says Aggie. “From family law to estate planning, real estate law to business and IP law, our mission is to protect our clients’ entire identity—and it’s truly an honor to serve them.”
Serving clients holistically, both Aggie and Michael have connections in other countries and can guide clients in legal decisions on a global scale. “We leverage our experience as immigrants as well as our appreciation for the American legal system to support and guide our clients no matter their background,” she says. “I fully appreciate that my counsel is empowering my clients to find the best resources, both within and outside our firm as our success means nothing if we can’t give our clients our best work.”
As proud parents and members of the Hinsdale community, Aggie and Michael assist clients navigate through important conversations around prenuptial agreements, custody, and divorce. “I appreciate the sensitivity of what we do,” she says. “So many of my clients come from diverse backgrounds, some first-generation Americans, and each with a unique and valued story to tell.” Giving their clients the time to not only review their cases but to hear their hopes, dreams, and fears is important at Baumert Law. “To us, being a lawyer means appreciating clients as people and not as cases and contracts,” she says. “We also believe deeply in giving back to the community and in supporting others in our profession.”
The firm’s philosophy is grounded in the belief that success is not just about outcomes, but the way those outcomes are achieved. “There’s always more to give, but we do so with gratitude for what we’ve already been given,” says Aggie. This mindset of appreciation guides their practice and informs the way they build long-lasting, meaningful relationships with their clients. It’s this combination of
legal knowledge and personal connection that sets the firm apart.
“At Baumert Law, we fully dedicate ourselves to our client’s cases and I never want to turn away someone in need,” says Aggie. “My proudest moment is when we see our clients return to us with a new goal or a new dream and they can confidently rely on us to help make those dreams a reality.”
