The Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art is a treasure trove of beauty filled with beautiful objects and a touch of science to keep things interesting. Lapidary is the art of cutting and polishing stone. Lapidary has its roots in prehistory, as early humans began fashioning tools and weapons from stone. In time, these techniques were also used for items of personal adornment. Stone carving evolved as an art in many cultures throughout the world. The museum is home to collections of carved jade, organic gemstones, dioramas, rocks, minerals, fossils, and the Castle Lizzadro, created by William Tolliday of London, England. This masterpiece combines lapidary and goldsmithing. On a large slab of Brazilian agate, the 18K gold castle rises from specimens of amethyst, malachite, azurite, and vanadium with faceted diamonds sparkling in the windows. lizzadromuseum.org

In addition to being a full-time mom, Diane is a talented artist who works predominantly in paint, pencils, and ink in her studio in Clarendon Hills. She enjoys working with interior designers and clients on projects and has just begun working on a new series of artwork that will take her into 2024. Hinsdale Junior
Woman’s Club Summer Soirée
La Fête en Rosé will transport guests to Paris
When 13 of the most dynamic women around pool their talents, the results rival any event anywhere, from the Hamptons to Malibu. Enter the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) Pink Party. “It’s a wonderful collaboration between the outgoing president and the incoming president,” says Jaclyn McNamara, who is closing out her tenure leading the 250-member organization.
The presidents are supported by a diverse group of women with different strengths and passions to put on a fantastic event.
McNamara explains that funds raised from tickets sales go directly toward fundraising grants for the 2022 – 2023 year while funds raised from sponsorships, raffle, and such will go to grants for the upcoming 2023 – 2024 club year.
Some exciting sponsors, including The Hampton Social, Budweiser, Tito’s Vodka, and Safeway Liquors will enhance the event. We’re really excited to be partnering with Julie Sutton and Anne Otzen of Compass Real Estate and Anne. What a treat to have the opportunity to enjoy Julie’s beautiful house,” McNamara says.
Suttons already-lovely home and gardens will be transformed to Instagram-ready perfection, like stepping into every influencer’s favorite for hot chocolate, Pink Mamma.
The Parisian theme is lightly inspired by the cult favorite
brand Love Shack Fancy. Fête en Rosé will be like walking through the streets of Paris and emerging into a grand party. Attendees can expect lots of flowers, ruffles, bows, and other nods to the City of Lights.
“It’s a nice sendoff for those who have worked hard to make the year successful and a terrific welcome to the new board and members. This is an event that’s open to all. For women who are considering joining, this is a great chance to get a sense of what the club is about,” says McNamara. Those who cannot attend can participate virtually in the raffle and auction. “if something catches your eye, place a bid. It all goes to supporting the important work of meaningful organizations,” says McNamara.
It has been an exceptionally successful year for sponsorships and donations at HJWC. More than 700 businesses explored opportunities at the Wonderland-themed April Benefit. “The auction and raffle raised an all-time high $46,000. For the year, the club raised $422,482—the largest amount ever,” says McNamara.
This Summer Soirée is more relaxed, the perfect moment to spend time with friends and friends to be and raise a glass to being a part of something special.
The HJWC Summer Soirée is Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. For more information about participating in the raffle or auction or applying to join for the 2023 – 2024 club year, visit hjwc.us.

The Classicist
Interior Designer Robert Hughes’ latest project is a sublimely edited studio space
WORDS BY MICHELLE CROWE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
Perched above Washington Street, with a treetop view of the comings and goings of busy Hinsdaleans, is a jewel box of a space reminiscent of a Roman flat. It’s the design studio of Robert Hughes, the interior designer behind many of the most beautiful homes in the area.
Hughes started designing in 2001, using his classical training and years of refining his taste through consulting with designer brands.
In 2013, he launched Robert Hughes Interiors and in 2015 opened a brick-and-mortar location. This combined studio and chic shop filled with furniture, decorative accents, and gifts was in a street-level Washington Street location. Locals loved being able to pop in for inspiration or to chat with Robert, who is a wonderful raconteur.
In 2022 Robert was inspired to create another Washington Street space, this time up a flight of steps. When the door is thrown open, it’s like stepping into Bill Blass’s living room or the office of a globetrotting architect. “It’s been a delightful experience to do a space just for me,” says Hughes, adding, “I wanted it to be neutral and calming, with soothing tones that won’t interfere when a client is looking at a mood board or deciding between fabrics.”
The designer also appreciates the neutral backdrop as he meets with fabric, wallpaper, and furniture representatives to review their newest collections or make selections for a particular project. More than 150 vendors might circle through in a season.
Anyone who has every worked in a creative capacity appreciates how important it is to have a background that inspires but does not dominate. He maximized every square inch of the 425 square foot space, choosing elegant small-scale furniture that can be moved around to host luncheons, dinners, or cocktail parties.
Hughes does not have a signature look, preferring instead to create rooms and homes that suit the individual, couple, or family who will live in them. “So many design styles interest me. I’m
interested in fashion, I visit museums, I see beauty everywhere. When you’re curious about life and interested in so many things, it’s more fun to be open to different ideas,” says Hughes.
Upon first meeting a client or reconnecting over a new project he gets a feeling for who they are and how they want to live.
“I ask what their aspirations are for their home, and we go from there. Whether it’s a light refresh or full renovation, it’s fun to dream with the clients. In doing this space, I was my own client, and still began with a dream,” says Hughes.
He was inspired by a small, but fabulous flat in Rome, which suits his exquisite collection of Roman antiquities. “It’s different cultures mixed together, with a nice tension between the masculine and feminine.”
In his gentleman’s world things are not “in” and “out” but matters of personal taste. “Anything can work as long as it is balanced and serene,” says Hughes. He does stress the importance of editing. “Every item in a room should play nicely with the other choices. Throwing everything in the pot doesn’t necessarily make the best stew,” he says. Instead, strive for rooms that feel edited, clean, and pure.
The designer divulges that he prefers to work on a handful of projects each season so he is able to focus on the details, find the objects that “hold hands nicely” and become a trusted advisor to those who are seeking to make their homes their havens. While he works mostly on a referral basis and with repeat customers, this bon vivant is always open to meeting with new people who need interior design advice. “I feel so blessed to have built wonderful relationships with people by helping them find happiness and joy in their homes,” says Hughes.

AMANGIRI
Add this magical sanctuary in the Wild West to your summer travel bucket list.
WORDS BY THERESA DEMARIA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY AMANGIRIJOURNEYS
As vacationers seek out their summer pursuits, discovering a destination that guarantees plenty of sunshine, open-air environments, and endless opportunities for adventure—and wellness-focused experiences is paramount.
Amangiri … mic-drop.
After being greeted by our driver from Amangiri at the small discreet airport in Page, we traveled in style (an immaculate Mercedes) to the resort. The ride was practically silent as our jaws were on the floor taking in the breathtaking desertscape of red and beige ridges, mesas, and gorges. We had talked about the prospect of visiting Amangiri, the celebrity-visited minimalist resort, for the past few years and finally made it.
Climbing the steps up to what is not your typical resort registration, we were struck by the clean-lined architecture paired with the beauty that Mother Nature created. We couldn’t hold in our excitement blurting out, “oh wow, that’s amazing” comments at every turn.
Greeted as if we had just arrived home, we felt completely welcomed and knew this was going to be an experience hard to forget. After the brief registration, we were on our way. Passing by the pool, which happened to be engrossed by a giant rock, our host said, “If you want to take a dip at midnight, feel free to do so. Think of this as home.” OK, that’s on the list of must-do’s!
Amangiri, at every angle, uses the landscape to its advantage as art. In every room throughout the resort, including the guest suites, you need no reminder that you are amidst gorgeous nature. The open-air spaces, large picture windows, and passageways are mesmerizing.
If it’s thrills you are seeking, you have come to the right place. Offering an opportunity to get close and cozy with the terrain is

a Via Ferrata experience, which was invented centuries ago in the Italian Alps. Amangiri’s “Cave Peak Stairway,” affixed to rock face, is a series of cables and ladder rungs allowing you to climb across 120 steps that span 200 feet in length and hover 400 feet above the rugged desert. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, this is for you!
We decided to explore the property at our own pace along the 12 miles of trails, offering the opportunity to work up our appetite for dinner while enjoying the archaeological and natural wonders.
Along our hiking journey we came upon the tented retreat of Camp Sarika, the sister property to Amangiri. The camp’s cluster of 10 canvas-topped pavilions, each with their own private plunge pool, is an enclave of meditative seclusion. We made a reservation at the restaurant there where the chef prepared a special dinner tailored to our personal tastes and preferences.
Food is paramount for both me and my guest and we were left with nothing to desire. For lunch we enjoyed our personal wood-fired pizzas which were outstanding, but pizza was just the beginning. The use of the wood burning stove was part of many our dining experiences, including the mesquite-smoked duck, a fire roasted pancake (more like a giant doughnut) and a 21-day-aged duroc pork chop, We ate whatever we wanted when we wanted
which just made the experience continue that at-home touch. This included late night in-room s’mores which we cooked over a personal open-fire grill while star gazing.
This experience wouldn’t be complete without multiple visits to the Amangiri Spa. A short distance from the world’s most incredible pool is this incredible labyrinth of water and concrete. We both agreed we needed this to replenish ourselves and thus signed up for a couples massage with seaweed wraps, concluding with a sage burning chakra cleansing. This was followed by a sound bath in the yoga room where we were both transported to what felt like another world. We felt like a combination of putty and revitalized when we were finished. The following day we returned close to sunset to enjoy the water pavilion with a sauna, steam room, a cold plunge pool, and an intimate jacuzzi set against sandstone cliffs to enjoy the sun falling behind the most incredible red-rock mountains.
Amangiri, set in the true Wild West, with its near mythical attributes is the ideal destination for those looking to push the boundaries of adventure while engrossed in the most peaceful and intimate of settings.
It was easy to recenter and to find serenity. It’s not a mistake then, that in Sanskrit aman means “peace” and giri translates to “mountain.”
As we walked away from the resort towards our vehicle taking us back to Page airport there was just one way to describe the experience: “That was at a whole new level.”
Amangiri aerial viewIt’s easy to get carried away by fun in the summer, but we’ll be here if you get hurt. With on-site x-rays, we are ready to mend your broken bones this summer break.

Imagine, for a moment, that the Fates—pushy little deities that they are—somehow persuaded you to take a totally different career path. Let’s say that you, wholly ignoring common sense and financial prudence, decided you were born to cook and run restaurants for a living. And, by some miracle, you defied the odds and hit it really big, the way Scott Harris has.
Like Harris, you opened a cozy little Roman-inspired restaurant in Chicago back in 1992, called Mia Francesca. It presented something fresh: an authentic taste of an Old World Roman trattoria, which diners positively purred over with the same repressed desire that Gregory Peck showed Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. Imagine that visitors fell for your concept so hard that you were invited to open a legion of Mia Francesca outposts across Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.
Decades pass. It’s the 2020s now. You’ve diversified your restaurant portfolio with other concepts—taco and tequila bars, Greek tavernas, etc.—but you wake up one morning, overjoyed that people are actually going out to eat again, and decide to recast your original baby: Mia Francesca concept that started it all. Now the dilemma: What do you preserve and what do you remold?
Harris’ delicious answer to that conundrum can now be found in St. Charles, where chef Pete DeRuvo has helped launch a hell-a-fun new concept called Mio Modo, which translates as “my way” in Italian.
Harris and DeRuvo, who have a raffish streak to them, love laying on the cheekiness. At Mio Modo, the menu is stamped with cursive little aphorism— ” formaggio is my love language” and “garlic always”—and then bookended with a “sign-language” glossary that demystifies what 10 different hand signals actually mean when Italians use them.
Taking a cue from the Roman poets of old, Mio Modo leans into the belief that we all enjoy classic Italian cooking, especially when it is served with a side of Instagram-worthy circuses. Order the house’s mozzarella app and your server,
Cocktails
Leave it to the Mio Modo team to name all of their cocktails after Italian stars, gangsters, singers, and the occasional sports car. The drinks are not only great ice-breakers, they’re as smooth as a Sinatra lyric.
Rudolph Valentino Rum Punch: It’s been said that young Rudy Valentino was so hyperactive that he was nicknamed “Mercury,” a nod to that most fleet-footed of gods. Nothing, it was argued, could slow the man down, but there’s a good chance this dangerously tasty summertime mixer—Amaro, rum, pineapple juice plus muddled strawberries and berry syrup—might have done the trick.
It’s exactly the sort of drink Henry “Goodfellas” Hill would’ve ordered for Karen during their lavish dinnerdate to see Henny Youngman. It’s simultaneously smooth— Sazerac rye, house-made limoncello—and appropriately frothy, thanks to a top layer of whipped up egg-white and touch of simple syrup.
Henry Hill:gloved in slick black gloves, will escort a brass cart to your table and proceed to prepare the cheese from scratch before your eyes.
Get your camera ready. It’s a clever little magic act: Hot water is poured over cheese curds, as your waiter molds and stretches the cheese as if it were a creamy-colored pizza dough. The mozzarella is then bundled back into a silky baseball-shaped sphere and topped with seasonal fixings, which run the gamut from oil-soaked tomatoes to a pine nut gremolata.
At the same time, Mia Francesca devotees will be relieved that Harris has preserved some of his customers’ all-time favorite treats. No one’s tinkered with Nonna’s meatballs, which are even fluffier than I remembered them. It certainly doesn’t hurt that dish’s glorious mix of marinara and ricotta—remember to smoosh it together until it’s the color of a good vodka sauce—can now be sopped up with slices of crusty ciabatta from the Michelle Baking Co. in Franklin Park.
The beef carpaccio, which is shaved so thin you’re liable to get a paper cut by just looking at it, is gilded with the very same jumble
that Harris and DeRuvo have been sprinkled throughout the menu that proves this is no cookie-cutter rerun.
Consider, for example, Mio Modo’s decision to ditch that beloved but ultimately cliched opening salvo of cheese and olive oil in favor of two treats: a bowl of fresh olives and tiny nuggets of Parmesan cheese drizzled with a house-made saba.
Back in the Old World, saba tends to be crafted in giant batches by reducing unfermented vats of grape juice squeezed straight from the vine. At Mio Modo, DeRuvo reduces down Red Fire grapes with sugar and a dash of Lambrusco until it’s versatile syrup, which looks as black as a slick of balsamic but offers a subtler plum-like sweetness. You’ll understand saba’s extraordinary versatility by ordering our favorite Mio Modo offering: Venetian-inspired pork ribs, which are dressed with saba and an 11-spice dry rub, before they’re roasted in an oven and crisped up in a fryer. The results are a viscous, two-napkin Italian riff on bbq ribs that are downright dazzling. Should you start with the ribs, Mio Modo’s cacio e pepe is a great follow-up, counterbalancing all those sticky notes with a creamy one-two combo of parm and pepper.
Anyone who’s partial to veal marsala, as we are, will be delighted to find that Pete’s opts against flat cuts of veal scallopine for thicker chunks veal tenderloin, which are served in a brothy marsala sauce topped with spinach leaves. The showstopper from the seafood side of the menu is a de-boned branzino that’s “anointed,” as DeRuvo likes to say, with olive oil, blistered cherry tomatoes, capers, and garlic slivers.
Suffice to say, there isn’t a secret Italian hand signal that fully captures the unbridled la dolce vita vibe of Mio Modo, unless you simply do as the Americans do and extend an open palm forward, fingers outstretched, and offer Pete and Scott a hearty handshake. They’ve done something special, after all, and produced sequel that’s every bit as fun and delicious as their star-making original.
of mushrooms, capers, tomatoes, and avocado that you remember from Mia Francesca. A few pastas—including spaghetti frutti di mare—remain untouched as well, but it’s ultimately the new dishes

Photography by Angie McMonigalThe St. Regis Chicago—that houses The Residences at the St. Regis—is a visionary concept by Magellan Development Group, designed by Jeanne Gang. Its crystalline form is inspired by nature, unlike anything on the Chicago skyline. Composed of three interconnected towers of increasing heights and exterior glass walls that move in and out from floor to floor, it is the third tallest building in Chicago—forever changing the city’s landscape.
The Residences at The St. Regis Chicago have exquisitely designed interiors by Hirsch Bedner Associates. The residences combine elegant spaces, exceptional finishes, and breathtaking views to create an ultra-luxury living experience. Each of the residential spaces is expertly crafted with the finest hardwoods, natural stone, and wallcoverings—complementing modern conveniences from luxury brands like Snaidero, Gaggenau, Thermador, and Kallista. Rich in detail, the Residences offer endless style.
“Our residences truly offer the best of everything,” says Rob
Pontarelli, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Magellan Development Group. “Gracious, private living space with all of the amenities of a five-star hotel and none of the worries that typically come with home ownership.”
Nearly every amenity imaginable is located on the 47th floor of the St. Regis Chicago, overlooking the crystal blue waters of Lake Michigan.
“We’ve tried to think of everything,” Pontarelli says. “Our residents have access to a state-of-theart fitness center and spa, golf simulator, cinema, indoor and outdoor pools, children’s club, indoor dog park, large party rooms—you name it. The 47th floor also is staffed with two full-time ‘butlers’ who assist with many of the residents’ needs. The St. Regis is quite impressive in the level of service it delivers, the importance it places on knowing the residents, and its ability to offer unmatched hospitality.”
One additional amenity that mustn’t go unspoken is the option for on-demand Tesla Model Y and Model S vehicles located on-site. Residents can instantly reserve for minutes, hours, or days.
While residents share a building with the St. Regis Hotel, their space will always feel like home.
“Privacy, comfort, and security are top of mind for our residents,” Pontarelli says. “This is what The St. Regis is known for. It’s what it does best.”

THE STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS™
WORDS BY MICHONE J. RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIADivorce is complicated. It can be messy. And when you’re first starting out, it’s incredibly overwhelming. It’s hard to know what to expect or even where to start. The attorneys at Strategic Divorce strive to educate our clients on all relevant matters to ease an often-difficult process. It was this goal of education that inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™, which will be released later this summer. I am pleased to share the following excerpt with Sheridan Road readers.
The Divorce Process – Initial Steps and Strategies
When a client first visits a Strategic Divorce office, an intake session takes place where the client meets with two attorneys. While most firms assign one lawyer per client, we believe it’s important to have two attorneys who are well-versed in the case. This way, if a question arises and one attorney is in court or speaking with another client, the other attorney can address the issue.
During the intake session, we listen to the client’s story—we learn who they are, who their spouse is, if they have kids—if so, how many, what their financial status is, what the home life is like, etc.
Next, and possibly most importantly, we figure out what has to happen for the client to feel like the divorce was successful. We want to know how they picture their life in a year. What assets did they keep? What kind of child decision-making or visitation do they have? Where do they live? What is their job? This helps us understand what matters most to them and to determine if their goals are attainable. We want to understand a client’s expectations early so we can explain any limitations that exist under the divorce law.
Once the client is ready, we move forward with the divorce or dissolution of marriage. Every divorce starts with one party filing a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage and how this is handled sets the tone for the entire divorce proceeding. Typically, the non-filing spouse is served with the petition. Often, they have no idea it is coming and are surprised when a sheriff shows up at their house or place of work.
Doesn’t sound very amicable, does it?
When Strategic Divorce files a Petition for Dissolution, we avoid papers being served. Instead, we send the petition via email, directly to the other party. This notifies them that we’ve been hired to represent their spouse, requests that they forward the petition to their lawyer, and asks that they contact us within seven days so that we don’t have to serve them.
We encourage clients to have a conversation with their spouse the day before the paperwork is filed. While most couples on the edge of divorce know it’s coming, it still can come as a huge surprise when proceedings actually begin. By warning the spouse the day before the petition is filed, it helps to remove the initial shock.
That being said, we highly recommend that this conversation happens the day before the papers are filed and not a month before. As the original petition is often written in a way that favors the filing party, we want to make sure our clients file first.
After the petition has been sent, the spouse will either hire an attorney or opt to represent themselves (we recommend that you do not represent yourself. You want somebody on your side who fully understands the nuances of divorce law).
I hope you have found this explanation of the beginning of the divorce process illuminating. In my book, I break divorce down into five steps. Next month’s excerpt will address Step 1: Decisions for the Children: How will these be made, which decisions can be made separately, and which ones must be made together? I will explain what to expect when navigating this thorny issue.

Fab Five
Nick Riccio and his wife, Susan Blair, celebrate five years running Hinsdale Ortho, a top oral care provider in the west suburbs.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARAconversation with Dr. Nick Riccio, who runs Hinsdale Ortho with his wife and business partner, Susan Blair, is a breath of fresh air. Upbeat and grateful to be running a practice that uses orthodontics as a tool to improve their patients’ confidence.
Riccio and Blair are excited to announce to the community that they will be celebrating five years of owning the practice with a super fun patient appreciation event on June 29th (3-7pm in their office parking lot). It’s no surprise they’re hosting a carnival-theme party, complete with dunk tank and concessions, because they truly love being a part of and serving the Hinsdale community. But they aren’t resting on their laurels…
“I would say we’re never going to let ourselves reach a peak. We’ll always be striving to get better every day,” Riccio says. “This has been a journey so far, but I feel like everything is trending better and better all the time. And we’re really hitting our stride at five years, it’s really fun to be a part of!”
Riccio and Blair purchased the well-established office in 2018, and rebranded to Hinsdale Ortho in 2021, so the majority of the time they’ve been operating has been under the pandemic or undergoing some sort of transition. Upon reflection, he says, it was all about the ability to persevere.
“I don’t know if there was a dip during those times, but we got past it, and now we’re accelerating in the right direction. It’s just about being committed to getting one percent better every single day. That growth mindset relates to my practice, but also to my personal life,” he says. “Constantly learning and growing as not only an orthodontist, but also a father, husband, and human being is so important to me. We are afforded the opportunity for growth every day, so we love what we do, and where we are with our practice and lives – it’s time to celebrate!”
Riccio has created a collegial environment at Hinsdale Ortho, where his team loves coming to work every day. And following his lead, his team is motivated to keep pushing, to get better, and to move forward, just like him. After five years, he’s starting to see his base of patients grow, because they’re referring friends and family. It’s the result of doing quality work that keeps people coming back.
“Orthodontics has a recycling patient base, since treatment is complete in a couple years, and requires new patients to replenish constantly. Thankfully, we’re blooming as a practice because not only
are we seeing new people come in just for us now, but we’re also seeing second and third family members return for treatment with us,” he says. “Both sources represent high praise, and signify we’re doing things right, which we don’t take for granted.”
Riccio and Blair form a great partnership. He graduated top of his class from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She studied pediatric dentistry before they met in orthodontic residency. Their combined expertise brings a wealth of unique knowledge to how they care for patients, both young and old. In addition to her orthodontic work at Hinsdale Ortho, Dr. Blair serves as a pediatric dentist in multiple locations throughout the Chicago area.
“We’re yin and yang, for sure. We balance each other really well. That’s where our strength lies, in our cumulative excellence. After all, Susan is a dual trained and dual board-certified pediatric dentist AND orthodontist, which is super rare, and offers a special expertise for our patients they can’t get most other places. I’m a boardcertified orthodontist but focus a lot of my attention on running the business like its Disney, with a world-class customer experience” Riccio says.“ I really get jazzed up about my vision and managing the practice, and especially the leadership of my team. I get the most compliments on my amazing team, hands down, it makes me so proud.”
After five years, it feels like Riccio and Blair are in a really good place, moving forward thoughtfully, striving to grow the practice with the right goals and motivation in mind while most of all, being true to themselves. After all, authenticity, which can be hard to come by these days, is one of their core values they hold dearly.
“We feel really great about where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going,” he says. “We’re ready to celebrate all that with the community at our carnival, it’s going to be a really nice moment for us and our patients.”
