As we enter a new year (and decade), it’s apropos that we look at ways in which future generations are impacting the community. For our January issue, we profile former Lake Forest resident Seamus Tuohy. Tuohy’s background in polo served as his serendipitous entree into the world of modeling. But even after departing for the west coast and posing for major labels like Ralph Lauren, the 20-year-old assures us that he’ll always consider Lake Forest home. It’s an honor to say that I have been friends with the Tuohy family since the inception of Forest & Bluff—they’re a fine clan, and Seamus’ good fortune is something that brings me a genuine sense of joy.

Elsewhere, we have two interesting looks at how younger tastes are shaping our dining scene. In Lake Forest, The Gallery, a beloved restaurant and art space, is opening a familyfriendly offshoot aptly named The Peanut Gallery. It hopes to be a destination for classic diner fare that kids (and adults)

will devour. If you prefer to swap cheeseburgers for a more contemporary quinoa bowl, we also explore the menu at Forest Greens Juice Bar in Lake Bluff. Owner Annemarie Ranallo’s decision to offer healthy fare came after seeing how a clean diet improved the health of her ailing infant son.

In our Giving Back section, the School of St. Mary announces a revival of its popular annual gala. A “Roaring into the Twenties” theme will celebrate the past while raising funds to invest in the future: the student body. Finally, our One Last Thing features Lake Forest High School administrator Darren Barndt. His first book, Extreme Teammates, is a guide for bringing out the best of any group, and was inspired by his years of coaching high school basketball.

They’re influencing how we dress, what we wear, where we give, and what we write. To paraphrase The Who, it seems like the kids are alright.

Cecilia Lanyon and Dominic Zumpano have been at the helm of one of Lake Forest’s favorite eateries, The Gallery, for the last three years. And while their customers feel like family, they noticed that something was missing. “Our guests don’t bring their kids when they come here,” Lanyon explains. “While the vibe of our restaurant is casual and fun-loving, the dining experience is more refined. Dominic and I realized there was a big opportunity in our city for a restaurant geared at families so we’ve decided to open The Peanut Gallery.” The Peanut Gallery, located on North Western Avenue in Westwood Center, is a fast-casual diner concept with burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and ice cream. “We have a menu that will be very kid-friendly, but we hope that adults will think of us as a dessert destination, too,” Lanyon says. “We’ve been working hard on bringing back all of those treats that make us nostalgic for our own childhoods.” –Ann

Meals on Wheels Chicago (MoWC) hosted its largest fundraiser, the Celebrity Chef Ball, in November where award-winning and Michelin Star Chefs from all over the city donated their time and culinary skills. When Seamus

Joseph Tuohy was born into the world 20 years ago, no one ever expected he’d lead an ordinary life. Especially not him.

“I was always a little bit of a wild child,” says Tuohy with an Irish twinkle, the youngest of four children born to Jim and Maureen Tuohy. “But I have these amazing parents who kind of rolled with it. I always knew there were boundaries but my parents let me be me.”

After graduating from Lake Forest High School in 2017 having been on the school’s state championship lacrosse team, Tuohy headed to the University of Missouri for college. “It was a great school,” Tuohy says. “I was in a fraternity and made a ton of lifelong friends. All along, I had a gut feeling that a spontaneous move was in the cards for me. My dad was living in San Diego so I made the decision to move to the West Coast and go to college in Santa Barbara.

“They call Santa Barbara the American Riviera,” he says. “It’s the only place I know of in the world where the mountains actually run

right into the ocean. It’s some of the coolest landscape I’ve ever seen. It fits me and my personality.” Tuohy took a job working with horses and teaching polo lessons at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club.

“My parents, especially my dad, were part of the pioneering polo families who brought the tradition of polo back to Lake Forest,” explains Tuohy. “I grew up playing polo at Crabtree Farm [in Lake Bluff]. I was around horses all of the time and the sport comes very natural to me.”

While working full-time at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, Tuohy connected with Prima Polo Productions, a company that loans horses to different brands for photo shoots and film productions.

“The woman who owns Prima Polo Productions is a good friend and has become a mentor to me,” he says. “She asked me

if I would help her with the horses needed for a weekend shoot with Ralph Lauren. I joked with her about how funny it would be if they asked me to pose in the shoot.”

Little did Tuohy know.

Within 10 minutes of arriving with the horses for a 6 a.m. call time, Tuohy was asked by Ralph Lauren’s production team if he’d mind changing into one of their looks.

“It was the craziest thing,” he recalls of this shoot that took place last June. “We were on Mammoth Mountain and the pictures were being taken for their winter line. Because it was summer, they brought tons of snow down from the top of the mountain and flattened it out to make it look like a cameraman stumbled upon this polo game taking place in the snow.”

working for the world-acclaimed fashion designer on the shoot.

“I guess you could say that I was discovered up on the mountain that day,” says Tuohy, who has modeled for a number of other campaigns since, with no lull in future modeling projects in sight.

While Tuohy had no aspirations of becoming a model and seeing his image appear on billboards and in magazines, he has embraced the new opportunities coming his way. “My dad would say that this [modeling] is a good thing,” he says. “I’ve definitely experienced the really good and really bad in my life.”

Most recently, Tuohy lost his closest high school friend— Jack Adams—in a boating accident. “Jack way my guy, my best friend. Not to have him around any more seems unreal. But

I know on some level that he’s up there pulling strings and making these things happen for me. It makes me even more grateful for all of the good in my life right now. My family talks a lot about ‘mitigating the vicissitudes,’ life’s highs and lows. There’s a balance. You take the good with the bad. Nothing is permanent and it’s important to live in the moment. But I definitely see this high only going up.”

For now, Tuohy calls California home with no plans for anything different. “I love California. My life is sweet,” he says. “But I never forget where I came from. Lake Forest is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. I don’t tell people I’m going to visit Lake Forest. When I head to Chicago, I tell them I’m going home.”

Forest Greens makes gluten-free healthy eating an easy option.

The morning sun coming through the windows at Forest Greens Juice Bar in Lake Bluff splashes little pools of light on the café tables, illuminating the rainbow-hued array of cold-pressed juices in the cooler. Behind the counter, staff workers fill bottles with a bright green batch of just-made juice, and motherdaughter owners Nancy Dini and Annemarie Ranallo discuss the batch of soup Dini will be making that day.

“Mom’s soups are becoming legendary here,” says Ranallo. “They fly off the shelves.”

But there’s more than just soup. The grab and go section of ready-to-eat natural foods, a cooler full of heat-and-eat selections, and an array of fresh-pressed juices are just part of the picture. There is also a broad menu of made-to-order items ranging from gluten-free avocado breakfast toasts to roasted vegetable quinoa bowls.

“We cover all of the bases,” says Ranallo. “Cold-pressed juices, smoothies, tea and coffee, snacks, and full meals that are keto, paleo, and vegan. My vision for Forest Greens was to provide a way for people to access healthy organic food and drinks at any time—offerings that are portioned correctly and prepared with fresh, high-quality, organically grown ingredients.”

Dini and Ranallo opened Forest Greens in July. But the seeds for the idea were planted shortly after Ranallo had her first baby. Anthony was a happy and active infant, except for two problems: asthma and sensitive skin that was prone to eczema.

“We had him in and out of doctor’s offices and it got to where he had to be hospitalized for the asthma,” Ranallo recalls. “The only cure they would prescribe was to pump him full of drugs and steroids. I was especially opposed to the steroids because they just mask illness rather than treat it.”

Looking for better solutions, Ranallo found a pediatrician who worked with her to shape a holistic approach to Anthony’s healing. Central to this was clean eating and drinking—an approach to nutrition that cut out processed foods made with unhealthy additives, refined sugar, and highly-processed grains.

“Pretty quickly, we started seeing improvement with Anthony’s conditions,” she says. “His skin cleared and he was breathing better.”

The whole Ranallo family adopted a similar diet, adding a lot of fresh-pressed juices to the regimen.

By 2016, Ranallo had four children who were active in a range of sports. “I’d be with them and I’d see firsthand that a lot of the kids’ teammates had no idea that eating better could keep their bodies in better health and improve their performance. I thought, ‘You know? I should really open a shop that would make getting the right food and drink possible.’”

The Ranallos rented a commercial kitchen and tested the retail food waters by supplying protein bars, raw desserts, salads, and smoothies to Reprise Coffee in Winnetka. Their success prompted them to open Forest Greens.

“In the beginning,” says Ranallo, “I thought we would just be able to do juices and raw treats. But finding this space, which had room for a fully-equipped kitchen, allowed us to offer much

more.”

The menu at Forest Greens now includes almost two dozen items. Cold-pressed juices are a focal point: options always include at least three “greens” choices, such as Goodness Greens (raw kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, parsley, apple, and lemon), plus a celery juice, a carrot juice, a beet juice, and an all-fruit selection. The Rainbow, for example, has red and green apples, green grapes, strawberries, mango, and lemon.

Juice shots—a more-concentrated version of the coldpressed juices—come in three varieties, plus a morning detox.

Then there are “refreshers”—combinations of coldpressed juices blended with coconut water, kombucha, or fermented lemonade. Smoothies run the gamut from Liquid Sunshine (coconut milk, orange juice, strawberries, pineapple, mango, peach, and honey) to the Black Magic (coconut water, blueberries, spinach, activated charcoal, and lemon.)

Snacks and treats include five different protein bars, steel-cut oats, and raw desserts, which include a clever play on a Twix bar.

Satisfying customers’ breakfast and lunch appetites, there are six varieties of Acai bowls—fruits, vegetables, and almond or coconut milks topped with house-made granola, and natural sweeteners. Gluten-free toast can come spread with avocado, egg salad, or nut butters and fruits. For pasta, there’s the Mac and NOT Cheese, made with chickpea pasta, cashews, sesame seeds, and nutritional yeast.

The heartiest offerings include a daily selection of dairy-free hot soups and chilis. Then there are “Buddha Bowls,” made with quinoa or riced cauliflower and topped with different combinations of seasonal vegetables and proteins.

“We are a gluten-free kitchen,” Ranallo adds. “And we use mostly raw ingredients. If a sweetener is needed, we use honey, maple syrup, or dates.”

It should also be noted that Forest Greens sources its eggs from EGGceptional Abilities, a microbusiness in Lake Bluff.

“We were so delighted to meet Mary Ann Barry who raises her chickens using organic practices to provide work for two autistic individuals,” says Ranallo. “We save all of the pulp from our produce. EGGceptional Abilites comes to pick up the pulp three times a week to feed to their chickens, so it’s a full circle, which minimizes our waste almost to nothing.”

“We are so pleased with how this business has been growing,” Ranallo sums. “We have been approached to open more locations in other areas, which tells me that there is a growing appreciation and desire for the clean food we offer. It’s meant a lot to my family, and it feels really good to pass that on to others.”

Lake Forest’s School of St. Mary brings back its annual beloved gala that promises to be a community celebration for all.

The buzz on campus about the School of St. Mary gala has been palpable for months. Will there be a school gala in 2020?

“The gala is back,” says co-chair Jennifer Lucas, who along with Liz Berrill and eight other committee members are resurrecting a much-loved tradition from the school’s past and hosting this fundraiser on Saturday, February 29 at the Cuneo Mansion & Gardens in Libertyville.

“We have so much great momentum going into the gala with all of the great new programming the Parent Association has introduced this year,” says Lucas. “The 5K Run, the Trunk or Treat Halloween Bash, and the Turkey Trot rotating house party are just a few. We have all of these new families who are so excited to be at St. Mary’s but have never been to our gala. This year, they will have their chance.”

“St. Mary’s Roaring Into the Twenties” is the theme for the 2020 gala—although no costume is required to attend.

“We really want to capture our school as it’s moving into the new decade,” explains Berrill. “We’re celebrating St. Mary’s past, present, and future.”

To that end, St. Mary’s is extending an invitation to the entire community, hoping that many of the school’s alumni will return for an evening that will include cocktails, dinner, live and silent auctions, a paddle raise, and fan favorite—the band “Maggie

Speaks” for entertainment. WGN’s very own (and school parent) Larry Potash will be the event’s emcee.

“There are so many talented people that have already given their time and energy to secure the success of the gala,” adds Berrill. To date, auction items include a boat cruise, a pony party, a ride from the Lake Forest Fire Department, and week-long stays at homes in Costa Rica and Jupiter, Florida. Auction items will be open online to the public prior to the event so that even those not attending the gala will have an opportunity to support the school.

“St. Mary’s has such a special place in my heart,” says Lucas, who along with her five siblings was once a student at St. Mary’s. “Not only do we have stellar academics, but we have a community grounded in values that you just can’t get everywhere else. I’m so happy that the gala will allow us the opportunity to celebrate this.”
