The show will go on this summer at The Second City as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes programming from the stage to the screens of our devices. Clarendon Hills resident Abby Wagner is helping to lead the iconic Chicago institution to brave, new online ventures that are as authentic as improvisation itself.

Greetings! I hope you are enjoying the summer sunshine as much as I am. I don’t know about you, but I am ecstatic to be able to snag dinner and drinks on the patio at some of my favorite restaurants. From Independence Day celebrations to polo matches and outdoor concerts, I’m looking forward to making memories and having many laughs with my family.
Speaking of laughs, we have Abby Wagner from The Second City in our July issue. Wagner is a resident of Clarendon Hills and also serves as the Vice President of Training Centers and Education Programs with the improv theater. She has been leading the way with the innovative online programming for The Second City during the COVID-19 quarantine.
We have curated some fun summer fashion finds in this issue as well. On the cover this month, we have Mary Beth Joutras of Oak Brook. Mary Beth is an influencer and fashion blogger. She shares some of her favorites in the country and in town with us this month. In Best Dressed, we've gathered our picks for our favorite summer styles we’ve noticed throughout the year. Our Style section features must-have pastel statement pieces for the summer. Vivian Eck of Hinsdale introduces us to her new online boutique in Hinsdale Teen. The teen entrepreneur made her dreams a reality when she started everythingvivianlynn.com this spring.

Our Giving Back section is here again! This month we feature a new fundraising network, 100 Women Making It Happen. Founded by eight local women, the nonprofit hopes to raise at least $10,000-plus during its inaugural meeting. 42 STYLE

We have two excellent Publisher Profiles in July. The team at Band and Wire in Clarendon Hills is expanding and adding pediatric dentistry to its practice. We learn about the group’s developments and meet Dr. Kelsey Brar. Mike McCurry of Compass has built a 30-year career in real estate based on teamwork. In One Last Thing, Shannon Maxwell, owner of lolosmithian, has been busy designing and sewing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her baby boutique typically carries one-of-akind, handmade gifts and accessories, but when the pandemic began, Maxwell switched gears. She has donated hundreds of masks to local facilities. If you haven’t done so already, visit My Sister Kate in downtown Hinsdale to see a selection of Maxwell's items in person.
As always, I hope that you and yours are happy and healthy. The past few months have been particularly difficult for not only the local community, but the entire nation. The team at Hinsdale Living and JWC Media is proud to support our neighbors in the fight for real changes against hatred. Be sure to share what you are up to in the community this summer on Instagram (@hinsdale_living) and tag #HLSummer.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN
Mantra? Follow Your Heart. Best grooming tip? Use SPF daily and drink a lot of water throughout the day. It keeps your skin healthy and glowing. My current go-to products are Vital Proteins, Tula, Sio Beauty, and Aesop. Guilty pleasure? A great glass of wine and anything chocolate. Favorite foods? I do try to eat clean as much as I can during the week, but love anything my husband cooks—especially his braised short ribs! Music you love? Currently, I have country on repeat. The Sandbar mix on apple music is my go-to right now. Best advice ever given to you? Everything happens for a reason. Best advice you’ve given? Be true to who you are. Earliest memory? Learning how to golf with my brothers when I was about 4-years-old. Love to escape to?
Glen Arbor, Michigan and Naples, Florida. When you wake up you? Scroll through my social media and emails to see what sales are happening, get the kids ready for the day, have a cup of TAZO tea, then head to Pilates by T or Shred415 after dropping the kids off at school. Before bed you? Unwind with a

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
Your style is? Contemporary casual. I love to switch it up—from workout wear to workwear. Transportation? Volvo SUV. Driving Music?

I love a great mix with a little classic rock. Place to eat?

Breakfast at Page’s Restaurant with my family, lunch with my girlfriends at True Foods, and a night out at Nabuki with my husband. Shop? I will shop anywhere and everywhere! I love the smaller boutique stores like Trousseaux, Lepa Boutique, and My Sister Kate. At Oakbrook Center, I like Nordstrom, J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, Vineyard Vines, and Anthropologie. I am a big online shopper, too. Best thing about country? There is that small town feel, which I love. It’s rare that you go somewhere, and you don’t bump into someone you know. People are so supportive of one another. Worst thing about country? It’s always a drive, never a walk. The perfect day is? A quiet morning on the lake, sipping tea, and watching the sunrise. Then a day filled with hiking, water-skiing, kayaking, lying by the water, and listening to music with friends and family. Ending the day with dinner, a glass of wine, s’mores, and watching the sunset with the ones I love.
glass of Dry Farm’s wine or a cup of tea and watch Netflix or the newest movie on Apple TV. Then I make a list of what I need to do for the next day. What’s on your bookshelf?
My favorites are romance and mystery novels, and a healthy array of magazines. You can’t live without? My family. Advice you would give to your younger self? Don’t sweat the small stuff … things always have a way of working themselves out.
WHEN IN TOWN
Your style is? On trend with a hint of vintage. I love getting dressed up and heading downtown with my husband, family, and friends. Can’t leave the house without? My cell phone and a pair of sunglasses. Transportation? Uber or a party bus, depending on where the night will take us. Driving music? Classic rock, country, pop—anything that brings the energy up for a great night out. Place to eat? RL for brunch, The Loyalist for a great burger, and I love to try out any of the latest additions to Eater Chicago ’s hotlist. Shop? I love to check out the stores that we don’t have in the suburbs—Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and the smaller boutiques on Halsted Street or Oak Street. Best thing about town? I love the energy the city brings. There is always something new to experience or see; whether it’s the latest restaurant, new exhibit, or a newly discovered boutique. Worst thing about town? Those cold gray days in the middle of winter. The perfect day is? A morning at the Peninsula spa, lunch at 3 Arts Café, and then dinner with my husband at Le Colonial or Maude’s Liquor Bar, and dessert at Mindy’s Hot Chocolate.

FASHIONABLE FUTURE
Vivian Eck merges her passion for business and fashion into a stylish online boutique.
WORDS BY MADISON ARON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARMost girls Vivian Eck’s age are thinking about where to buy their clothes from. Eck, however, is focused on who she will sell clothing to. Ever since she can remember, the teen has had a passion for fashion.
In fact, in a letter she wrote to her future self when she was a high school freshman, she discussed wanting to start a fashion related business. In November of 2019, as a senior in high school, she decided it was time to turn this dream into a reality and Everything Vivian Lynn (everythingvivianlynn.com) was created.
Everything Vivian Lynn (EVL) is an online fashion center that strives to provide on-trend clothing and accessories at an affordable price to teenage girls and young women alike. Nearly every item sold is under $50 and Eck personally inspects each piece to ensure it aligns with her brand’s mission.
“The EVL girl wants to be trendy, but she doesn’t want to break the bank either,” explains Eck.
So, how does she do it? Eck has become a master of growing her brand and customer base on social media platforms. Her younger sister even helps her with TikTok. Her preferred medium, though? Instagram. She uses Shopify for analytics on her posts and adapts her marketing and product selections based on the results.
When choosing pieces for her website, she typically gravitates towards items that she herself would wear, but also branches out to select fashionable finds that may not be her exact style, often taking into account what her friends and other peers might be interested in.
Recently Eck had to re-evaluate how she runs her business. In response to an increase in shipping rates as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Eck and her team now do local deliveries. Their customers have responded very positively to the quicker delivery times, all while EVL has been able to keep its same pricing structure. All orders are packaged in the morning, and those that need to be shipped are usually sent out by the end of the day.
Eck wouldn’t be able to run her new venture without a few helpful hands and she is incredibly humble about it. She gives credit to those who have supported her by naming some of the pieces of clothing being sold after them. Her friends, Emma Decaigny and Juliana Gee, can be seen modeling the clothes on the EVL website. Another close friend, who she refers to as “The EVL Superfan” has also been helpful in promoting the brand on social media and by word of mouth.
Of course, she says, her parents were instrumental in getting the company started. When she presented the EVL business plan to
her parents, they supported her in every way they possibly could. After hiring Elemento Media to create a website, Eck and her mother began the long process of creating a brand and a legitimate company. She had to obtain a business license, tax verification paperwork, and register at a wholesaler. After some time, she became a verified buyer and was able to select items for her boutique from a much wider range of products.
Everything Vivian Lynn’s latest drop was at the end of June and she is hoping to host a launch party once it’s deemed safe to do so. Before heading off to college, Eck plans to select more products for a fall collection and is excited to show another side of EVL with pieces that are not spring/summer focused.
As for where her future will lead her, Eck has an interest in marketing, which has played a large role in starting her company. In the fall, pandemic-permitting, Eck will be a student at Indiana University in the Kelley School of Business. She says she wants to use her education as a Marketing and Digital Social Media major to “take this little store and turn it into something the nation knows about it.”
Eck’s ultimate dream: owning her own fashion media company.
“I worked a marketing internship at Jameson Sotheby’s last summer, and it gave me the confidence to just go for it,” she explains, “Ginny Stewart was my mentor and I learned so much from her.”
Though she is not majoring in a fashion-related field, she plans to use her extracurricular involvement to blend the business aspect of her degree with her passions.
“Since starting this,” she says, “A ton of girls have reached out to me to ask me how I got started. The biggest thing for me is to just get involved. Start a blog, join a club, get involved in your own little way. I want to join a fashion club at IU to steer my degree into fashion.”
Everything Vivian Lynn is sure to be a success story, as will Vivian Eck herself.
“A ton of girls have reached out to me to ask me how I got started. The biggest thing for me is to just get involved. Start a blog, join a club, get involved in your own little way.”

you need a team
Our attorneys never lose sight of the fact that divorce is both serious business and raw emotion. As you go through the most difficult time in your life, you need a law firm that is dependable, accessible, skilled, and proactive. You need a firm that listens to you and understands your objectives and fears.
Our team of attorneys bring experience to the table. Whatever the issue, we work to provide our clients with complete information and sound counsel, so that they can make informed decisions on settlement or trial. We resolve matters amicably where possible or through assertive trial work when necessary.
Not content to be like other firms, RCA attorneys distinguish themselves by providing unsurpassed customer service in the greater Chicagoland area and on an as-needed basis through its affiliated offices in France (Lyon) and Italy (Rome and Milan).
For more information about our firm, please visit our website at recent-law.com. It would be our pleasure to meet with you in Hinsdale or Chicago.

WE CONTINUE TO BE HERE FOR YOU
If your personal crisis occurs in the midst of this global crisis, please know that we are here for you. With offices in Chicago and Hinsdale and an IT infrastructure that allows us to securely work and video conference from anywhere, we are prepared to help with your divorce and family-law issues, no matter the event.
CONSULTATIONS
We are still able to provide the same services remotely as though we were meeting with you in our office. We are happy to provide consultations via Zoom or telephone and do screen share strategy sessions. We continue to move cases forward through the court system.
MEDIATION
Nicole Centracchio is available for any mediation or parent coordination services that may be needed. With courts having restricted physical access, alternative solutions to ongoing family law crises are more important now than ever.
ONGOING COURT MATTERS
Courts now utilize virtual platforms to conduct pretrial conferences and hearings, and to deal with emergency motions. If you have an issue, now is the time to take action.
SUPPORT MODIFICATION
If you receive child support or maintenance or if you pay child support or maintenance and you are now facing an unexpected financial loss, including reduction of hours, reduced pay or unemployment, we urge you to call or email our office (info@recent-law.com) to discuss how these unexpected life changes could affect these payments. With issues such as these, time is often critical, as relief is usually measured retroactively to the date that a formal request was placed on file with the court. Here, time really is money.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RECOURSE
Both courts and local governments have been extremely sensitive to cases of domestic violence. In fact, such cases have been given clear priority since the shelter in place orders went into effect and are being heard promptly. There are measures to protect victims and there is reason to hope that justice will still be carried out. Of course, the current pandemic has made matters more complicated, but do not hesitate to reach out to us, should you find yourself in need of help.
At Reed, Centracchio & Associates, LLC our clients really feel like extensions of our own families. Your stresses are our stresses. Though times may be difficult, we have been helping clients through crises for many years. You might say it has become our specialty. Please let us know if we can help. We would love to hear from you and help ease your burdens. We are, as always, here for you.
The RCA Team wishes you good health and an excellent outcome on all of your family-law matters.
POWER IN NUMBERS T
A new nonprofit fundraising network, 100 Women Making It Happen, offers an easy way to give back to local organizations that need it the most. While its inaugural spring fundraiser was cancelled in light of COVID-19, the group is moving forward with its mission.
WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAShere are many ways to make a difference in the world. Some people donate time and talent. Others spend weeks organizing fundraising events. But what if you only had an hour to spare, three to four times a year?

In 2008, a national organization called 100 Women Who Care answered that question with a novel concept—bring together 100 women who can commit to one hour of their time and a $100 contribution on a quarterly basis. Choose a few worthy charities, and those $100 individual checks have the exponential power to raise $10,000 in just one hour.
Jill Casey of Hinsdale says she and a group of philanthropicminded women in our community heard about this concept but wanted to put their own spin on it. Interestingly enough, that seed of inspiration came from the pages of our own Hinsdale Living magazine.
“Last February, Ruta Brigden had read in Hinsdale Living a Country vs. Town article on a woman who was on the board of the Western Spring’s 100 Women Who Give A Damn. Having served and been a leader in a variety of Hinsdale-based organizations, she was looking for her next adventure and was inspired by their mission,” says Casey.
Brigden asked Dee Bauer to join her in attending the group’s April 2019 event. Meanwhile, 4,000 miles away in Maui, Casey was also having dinner with a friend and learned about the Maui chapter of 100 Women Who Care.
“Having just worked eight months on the board of another local nonprofit planning a big charity luncheon fundraiser, I was drawn to how efficient and simple this model was in raising money for a variety of organizations,” Casey adds. “I came home from spring break and told my friend Christine Trainer that we needed to consider doing this as our next adventure.”
Two weeks later, Trainer saw the social media posts from Brigden and Bauer’s experience at the Western Springs event, told Casey about it, and by coincidence, Casey ran into Bridgen at Fuller House. It was a meeting that seemed meant to be.
“We knew there were so many women in the Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills area eager to contribute towards bettering the lives of people in our community,” Casey says.

She is now joined by Bauer, Brigden, and Trainer on the cofounding team, along with Kara Boyle, Cathy Coyne Hofmann, Donna Mittelstadt, and Shazia Sultan.
“We have eight founding members and we’ve all volunteered or been in leadership roles supporting the various local philanthropic organizations over the years. And I know we will continue to do so. But this approach is different,” Casey says. “It’s simple, but powerful. And it reaches the smaller charities that don’t have big enough budgets to reach enough people. There will be no luncheon or dinner to plan, or months of fundraising. And 100 percent of the donation will go directly to the charity.”
Rather than creating a local chapter of the national organization, Casey says they wanted to follow Western Springs’ lead and form a nonprofit of their own. Hence, 100 Women Making It Happen was born in Hinsdale, harnessing the strength of a diverse group of local women bound by a commitment to helping the community.

“Our founding members represent different schools in our community, have different aged children—from newborn to college-aged—have experience in working with a variety of different local nonprofits and come from different social groups,” she explains. “With the skills and amount of experience these women each bring to the table, I am completely humbled to be working with each of them.”
While the group had to cancel its April kickoff event because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Casey is confident that they will be ready to move forward and make an immediate impact as soon as life returns to normal—with plans to reschedule sometime this fall.

“In one hour, with 100 women, we hope to raise $10,000 for the winning charity. Each of the three charities will have five minutes to give their pitch, all in attendance will vote for a winning charity, and they will each have a table provided for them to connect with these women afterward—for volunteer opportunities or further donations,” she explains. “So, regardless of the outcome, they will have the opportunity to reach these women.”
Sounds like a win-win for all—especially in these uncertain times.
“The economic repercussions from the COVID-19 pandemic have affected charities enormously. They need our help more than ever right now,” Casey says. “We’ve already discussed reaching out to organizations particularly impacted by this crisis, and perhaps organizations that provide shelter for the homeless. As soon as things stabilize a little more, we will resume working harder than ever to find the ones in most need of our assistance.”

Yes, and…
The show will go on this summer at The Second City as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes programming from the stage to the screens of our devices. Clarendon Hills resident Abby Wagner is helping to lead the iconic Chicago institution to brave, new online ventures that are as authentic as improvisation itself.
INTERVIEW BY SHERRY THOMAS / PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE SECOND CITY
For more than 50 years, The Second City has shined a global spotlight on the “second city” of Chicago as the world’s most renowned improvisational comedy theater and training center. From John Belushi, John Candy, and Chris Farley to Mike Meyers, Eugene Levy, and Tina Fey, it has launched legends and accumulated an all-star roster of alumni that includes such comedy icons as Fred Willard, who died earlier this year, and the great Joan Rivers.
During good times and bad times, The Second City troupe has always been there to make us laugh. This moment, and the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, is no exception. While the lights have gone off at theaters throughout the Chicago area, The Second City is finding ways for the show to go on.

Abby Wagner, a Western Springs native who moved to Clarendon Hills to raise her young family two years ago, is proud to be part of the online innovations that are making that possible.

“I joined The Second City in the accounting department while getting my MBA at Loyola University in Chicago. Everyone in business school needed to get an internship for work experience, and in the mix of consulting firms, pharma companies, and finance organizations, an opportunity popped up at The Second City,” says Wagner, who today serves as Vice President of Training Centers and Education Programs at The Second City and The Harold Ramis Film School. “I had a wonderful professor who knew about my love of both theater and business and told me to pursue it. Thirteen years later, here I am! I
moved from accounting into corporate sales for the organization, and a few years ago, I took over running our Training Centers in Chicago, Hollywood, and Toronto.”
While live shows are not likely to continue anytime soon at The Second City’s venerable Old Town Mainstage, the theater and improvisation training center is bringing the show to your home through online classes and performances. We got a chance to talk to Wagner about her role in making this possible and how the pandemic is helping The Second City expand to audiences here in the Hinsdale area and around the world.

Has anyone in The Second City community been directly affected by COVID?
Thankfully, I’m not aware of anyone in our close community that has become seriously ill. However, everyone— especially those working in the arts—have been directly affected by all of this. In mid-March, we had no choice but to shut down our live performances and classes, which has affected many of our actors, teachers, servers, box office workers, and staff. We know we’ll be back doing what we do best, though, and the arts will survive this. They must! We all need art, and we all really need comedy.
The impact of the pandemic has been devastating to
performing arts and theater organizations around the country. How is The Second City reacting and managing to stay afloat during these unprecedented times?
Faced with the need to halt any in-person shows and classes, we quickly saw a need and an opportunity to pivot to increased online learning. We’ve been running some online comedy writing classes for years, but at the onset of COVID-19, we had over 2,000 students in our classes held at our theaters. We challenged ourselves to execute all of the things we previously thought couldn’t be done—online improv, acting, and performances. We went into beta testing for one week with hundreds of students and teachers discovering the nuances of learning and performing

online. One week later, our online comedy school was up and running. Since then, we’ve had more than 3,500 enrollments in our online programs.

Are there any opportunities that you see coming from this crisis?
Absolutely. Our online courses have had students joining us from all over the world. Students are joining us from Germany, China, Argentina, and South America … the list goes on and on. The free shows we stream weekly are reaching from 1,500 to more than 3,000 viewers each time, which is quite a dramatic jump from our Mainstage theater that seats 300.
On a more local scale, our online kids’ camps are seeing a huge surge in suburban students that might not have been able to drive into the city for an in-person class.
How was The Second City already prepared to take some of its classes and performances online?

Technically, we were able to expand the basics of our established online classes and built on what we knew. For our shows, it was a bit of a fresh start. The most important thing that helped us was tapping into an improviser’s mindset. We all talk often about our ‘yes, and…’ philosophy at The Second City. You take what’s given to you, and you build upon it to create a scene. This has been the ultimate test of taking what’s given, reacting in the moment, and creating something out of nothing. We tell our students to ‘play the scene they’re in,’ meaning that you make the
most out of the audience suggestion and the setup by your scene partners. Let’s be honest; we’re all ‘playing the scene we’re in’ right now.
How do you see the pandemic influencing material and shows moving forward?
The unique way that The Second City creates content is through audience suggestions, so we’re refining shows every day based on what’s getting laughs. As we re-enter show creation, we’ll quickly learn how much our audiences want to laugh at the pandemic—or if they want to use a night at the theater as an escape to forget about it all. We’re always going to lean into what our audience reacts to and what they want to see. One thing is for sure, though: I think we’ll all be washing our hands a lot more.
The Second City is a Chicago institution. What can new audiences and longtime supporters do to help it get through these unprecedented times?
Take an online class or consider one for your kids. They’re amazing. You can also view one of our free shows from home. There are adult shows in the evening and a kids’ show every Thursday afternoon. We are also offering the option to buy a gift card to use later on an in-person class or camp, in the theater, or at our bar.

Stunning Smiles

YOUNG SMILES
Band and Wire now offers pediatric dentistry services alongside orthodontics it’s been providing for all ages.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEODThe Band and Wire team just celebrated their twoyear anniversary, with an exciting new expansion to come this summer. Band and Wire has been providing exceptional orthodontic care to adults and children of all ages in Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, and the surrounding communities since opening in 2018. Led by Dr. Ramzi Daibis and Dr. Tamara Oweis, both Board-Certified orthodontists, the team is dedicated to providing beautiful and healthy smiles for all of their patients. The doctors have also had plans to expand their practice from the start, and they are excited to announce that they now offer pediatric dentistry in the same office.

“Dental care becomes necessary as soon as the first tooth comes in, and orthodontic treatment becomes easier and less involved with proper and regular maintenance. Direct communication with the dentist is an essential part of the process. So, we thought it is most beneficial to offer both specialties to our patients at the same location,” says Dr. Daibis.
The team is excited to announce the new professional joining their practice, Dr. Kelsey Brar. Dr. Brar obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago where she was awarded the Dr. William S. Kramer Award of excellence from the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Sigma Chapter and the Brian D. Stone Memorial Award for her volunteerism and public service.
Dr. Daibis adds, “We are passionate about providing quality care in a comfortable environment with the patient’s best interest in mind. It was very important to us to find a pediatric dentist who shares the same vision and philosophy. Dr. Oweis and I believe we found an excellent match with Dr. Brar, whose educational background, treatment philosophy and bedside manner make her the perfect fit for our practice.”
After graduation, Dr. Brar furthered her education with a three-year pediatric dentistry residency program at the University of Illinois at Chicago while also pursuing a Master of Science in Oral Sciences and a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Administration.
“I truly believe that all children should have access to dental care. I am a strong advocate for children’s oral health, and I will continue to support this cause throughout my career,” explains Dr. Brar.
Dr. Brar, a Downers Grove resident and a mother of two, understands what concerns parents the most about their children’s dental health.
She explains, “I take a family-centered approach, which emphasizes the importance of parents participating in their child’s dental care. My treatment incorporates traditional, modern, and minimally invasive techniques to ensure a positive and stress-free dental experience, especially for children with special healthcare needs.”

Band and Wire’s unique and collaborative approach is convenient for parents who want their children’s dental and orthodontic treatments done at the same time and place. Additionally, there’s also the added benefit of dental specialists discussing and coordinating treatments to ensure the best results for their patients.
Dr. Daibis shares the group’s excitement, “By joining our specialties and expertise, we will provide seamless dental and orthodontic care from very early childhood through young adulthood. We are very excited about this new chapter for our practice.”

A FOUNDATION OF INTEGRITY
Mike McCurry has translated the lessons he learned about teamwork on the football field to his successful 30-year career in real estate
WORDS BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARIn 1988, Mike McCurry’s back caught up with him. Having played college football at Indiana University and professional football for a short time with the Minnesota Vikings—along with a few years in the Arena League—a nagging back injury and the potential for surgery led him to retire.
Through a friend he landed a coaching position at Hinsdale Central High School, and eventually decided to get his real estate license, a decision that has led to a successful, 30-year career in real estate investing and sales.

“The caliber of the athletes in high school was not what I was
used to being around. It was college that I was used to being a part of and that was very intense,” McCurry says. “I looked into becoming a real estate investor, started studying investing, spending time around people in the field. Then, I bought my first house in Hinsdale and rented it out.”
While the path from football career to real estate investment career may seem unconventional, McCurry says it’s the teamwork and commitment to win that links the two together.
“I’ve always looked at sports or business as not an individual idea but a team idea,” he says. “There are so many lessons to be
learned on the field, especially in team sports, that translates into being in a group or a team that has to be accountable and produce something of value.”
McCurry notes that as with sports teams, his real estate team, Mike McCurry Group of Compass, spends a lot of time together and that it’s the group’s effort to support each other that makes them successful.

Over his 30-year career, McCurry, who was raised in Indianapolis, has established deep roots in the Hinsdale/ Clarendon Hills area. He met his wife, Amy, at the annual Fourth of July Parade in Hinsdale and a year later, as the parade’s marshall, took the authority to halt the parade briefly so he could propose. Together, they’re raising their four children in the area.
“I had choices to put my license in other towns, but I interviewed around, and I really liked the people here,” he says. “It’s much different than where I grew up, but I just like the friendliness and the influence the people have to make a difference.”
McCurry is heavily involved in Christ Church Oak Brook and many of his clients derive from his church network. This bond of faith allows him to establish long-term relationships with clients, and 74 percent of his business is from clients he’s worked with already.
Faith is a primary driver behind McCurry’s approach to the real estate business, which he says is rooted in integrity and transparency and giving clients honest assessments of investing and buying opportunities.
“I went through one of the worst markets that we’ve ever had, but I was still able to help many families buy and sell during that time because I was a truth teller and helped people get ahead of the bubble,” McCurry says. “Then when the bubble burst, we got ahead of the competition because I was honest and transparent.”
McCurry adds, “Integrity is part of my belief structure, and I don’t need to sell the sale if it’s going to jeopardize that structure.”

Mike McCurry Group of Compass is located at 36 S. Washington Street in Hinsdale, 630-447-9393, themccurrygroup.com.

SHANNON MAXWELL has been working overtime lately. The Hinsdale mom and owner of lolosmithian, featuring handmade boutique baby goods, switched gears during the COVID-19 pandemic and added masks to her shop. You may have seen her items at My Sister Kate in downtown Hinsdale or at a local market. Her three children were not only her inspiration for starting her business, but the moniker, lolosmithian, is an amalgamation of their names— London aka Lolo (15), Smith (12), and Ian (10). Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Maxwell has made her way to Virginia, California, New York City, and Russia where she lived and worked in the ballet industry. Although she’s lived across the globe, Maxwell, her husband Max, and their children have called Hinsdale home for more than 10 years. She says, “It’s just a beautiful place to live. It’s a great sense of belonging in this community. I am very thankful to the community for all of its support over the years!” Along with lolosmithian’s unique face masks, Maxwell makes baby gifts, bibs, blankets, and more–all by hand.
