A really great umbrella policy. It’s the second best medicine.

It’s much easier to laugh in the face of adversity when you’re properly covered against it. Life goes better when you’re prepared. We partner with our customers to discover the pain points - carriers who have raised rates, changes in your situation, blind spots in coverage. We present premiere insurance companies - Chubb, Pure, Cincinnati, Nationwide Private Client and AIG - to protect the owners of high value homes and their possessions. Then we navigate to good, informed decisions.

It’s amazing how the right umbrella policy and other preventative, strategic instruments can inoculate you against trouble. Call us to start a conversationit won’t hurt a bit.

Editor’s Note

THIS YEAR, more than any in recent memory, I am longing for the rituals and simple pleasures of summer. As a quintessential morning person, waking up to birds singing through open windows is pure joy. This is almost always followed by a barefoot walk, coffee in hand, to check on our garden beds while the robins hop silently about in search of breakfast. Another favorite summer ritual involves weekly trips with friends to Elawa’s Garden Market and the Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market. I love discovering what is in season, then gathering ingredients for casual weekend dinners on the porch. While we’re on the subject of dining outdoors, in this month’s issue, Ellie Nottoli of elliestyled shares her summer entertaining tips. I hope her words inspire you to set a beautiful, relaxed table for your next al fresco meal. Gale Gand’s luscious Raspberry Rhubarb Pavlova, appearing in The Dish column, will be the crowning glory, wowing friends and family with its sweet, unfussy, cloud-like perfection.

And why not set your table with herbs and flowers snipped from the backyard? June’s In the Garden will help you create a thriving bee-assisted garden and grow robust roses ready to take center stage. A massive bunch of sherbet-hued peonies from M on the Square, as seen in The Cut, is a showstopping alternative to stealing your garden beauties.

Much of this issue is dedicated to time spent out of doors, from the above mentioned to The Lifestyle List’s gardeninspired editor’s picks and The Sporting Life’s tennis focus. One of our features continues on this path with a look at Rocco Fiore & Sons, who have crafted landscapes across the North Shore with European ideals since 1947. Two of our features, however, turn thoughtfully inward. Writer Ann Marie Scheidler visits Jason Rosenthal, author of the newly

released book My Wife Says You May Want to Marry Me, and shares his journey through loss and love after losing his wife, native Lake Forester and celebrated children’s-book author Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Artist and award-winning inventor Jerome Caruso is featured in Allusionism, an article highlighting the new physics-based artform he invented in a quest to create transformative art. Dawn, his first public piece from this body of work, is made up of seven, 14-foottall stained glass windows, and was recently installed in Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital’s chapel.

I hope you enjoy this issue while relaxing in the sunshine, and that you take time to smell the roses— or the peonies. Our summers are sweet but fleeting, so savoring every moment is a must.

A Tisket, a Tasket, a Bicycle with a Basket

JOHN F. KENNEDY once said, “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” Jay Shlifka has known this since 1968, when his parents opened Kiddles Sports in Lake Forest’s historic Market Square. Originally opening as a hardware store, Shlifka’s father kept the lights on by selling paint and tools, but it was the bikes he sold from the basement that brought him joy. Sporting goods and bicycles happily took center stage when the Shlifkas acquired the space next door in 1975.

Jay Shlifka and his sons now run this third-generation family-owned store and will provide curbside service for all of your cycling needs. Do you need a snappy new Electra with a basket and bell? Could your favorite vintage bicycle use a tune up from a skilled bike mechanic? Are you coveting a road bike for treks along the North Shore Bike Path? Call the Kiddles team and they will have you ready to enjoy, as JFK said, the simple pleasure of a bike ride. Their current hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Thursdays and Sundays); they also offer free bicycle repair pick-up. Kiddles Sports is located at 258 Market Square in Lake Forest, 847-234-0025, kiddlessports.com.

VALENTINA OPENED

its Lake Forest doors in 2012, inspired by continual requests from their Penny’s from Heaven customers to create a store for older girls and women. The store’s aesthetic is one of ease and comfort, offering casual and comfortable clothes as well as home and gift items, “that we think are appealing, whether to look at or simply because they make you feel good,” shares owner, Sarah Scott. “We buy what we like, of course staying on trend, but really following our own sense of style. We know what will sell and have the confidence to do our own thing.”

Customers enjoy shopping Valentina’s ‘vignettes’ of specific categories—party, gifts for men, frames, books, and equestrian, to name a few—and they love the experience of being in such a happy place. Sarah says, “We really just want everyone to enjoy themselves and leave feeling

good! We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We want our customers to leave feeling as though they have found something comfortable or the perfect gift.” They have pivoted creatively—and successfully—during the temporary COVID closings by selling through Instagram Stories and FaceTime appointments, and offering curbside pick-up and free local delivery. “We have learned that the connection we share with our customers can be transcribed through Instagram, where the communication often leads to a phone call or a long text exchange. This is so important to us and we truly believe we can attribute our success to this kinship of sorts.”

Valentina is located at 227 E. Westminster Avenue in Lake Forest, 847-535-9600. To shop via Instagram visit @shopvalentina, then leave a message at the store or text Sarah at 847-337-7575.

MY DESK IS COMMAND CENTRAL of the house. Bravo Waukegan is an organization my husband Liam and I have been involved with for the last ten years. Sadly, the benefit I was co-chairing to raise much needed funds for its programming was cancelled due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Here on my desk, you can see the letter sent to our supporters announcing the cancellation and requesting donations in lieu of attending. Bravo Waukegan supports students of the Waukegan public schools, partnering with the fine arts administration to fund opportunities to grow through music. We provide resources for supervised, creative programs that take place in-school, after-school, and during the summer. Collecting and refurbishing musical instruments to be distributed to students in the program is another big part of what Bravo Waukegan does. Consider donating the instruments and musical equipment collecting dust in your attic—they will be loved and cherished!

PEONY SEASON. Almost unbearably lush and utterly intoxicating, there are no flowers more eagerly anticipated than peonies. And their weighty blossoms, coaxed open each morning by the warm sun, are a gardener’s sweet reward. There is no better way to celebrate this harbinger of summer than with a mass of uninterrupted blooms casually arranged in your favorite vessel.

PAVLOVA with RED WINE ROASTED RHUBARB and RASPBERRIES

digs in, sleuthing mouthwatering recipes from local chefs and fabulous home cooks.

THE DISH
HOUSE & GARDEN 38 FOREST & BLUFF

“I absolutely LOVE Pavlova. It’s the perfect combination of crispy, chewy, creamy, and fruity. It’s light, easy to make, and beautiful too, so make sure you show it off before cutting into it. This one is special, using spring ingredients, celebrating the fact that winter is over and it’s safe to come out of the house! It’s also portable, in parts, so sometimes I bring it over to friends’ houses and assemble it right there in front of them. Helpers accepted, and there are always a few willing interns.” –Gale Gand

Serves 8-10

F&B is honored to have Gale Gand, nationally acclaimed pastry chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, television personality, teacher, entrepreneur, and mother share one of her favorite seasonal dessert recipes with us. She has been recognized as Outstanding Pastry Chef of the Year by The James Beard Foundation and by Bon Appetite magazine and has been inducted into the Chicago Chefs Hall of Fame.

Ingredients for Shell:

• ½ cup egg whites, at room temperature (from about 4 eggs)

• 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar

• 1/8 teaspoon salt

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 1 ½ teaspoons cornstarch

• 1 tablespoon raspberry vinegar or red wine vinegar

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Ingredients for Topping:

• 1 ¼ cups heavy cream

• 2 tablespoons sugar

• Roasted Rhubarb (recipe follows)

• 2 half pints raspberries

• 12 fresh violets, Johnny Jump Ups, or other edible flowers

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment (or using a hand mixer), whip egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt in a clean, dry bowl until foamy. Add the granulated sugar, cornstarch, vanilla, and vinegar and continue whipping until stiff, smooth, and glossy, about 4 minutes more.

3. On a sheet of parchment paper cut to fit a sheet pan, use a pencil to draw or trace a circle 8 inches in diameter (I use my Kitchen Aid bowl). Line the sheet pan with the parchment, pencil side down (you should still be able to see the circle). Spoon the egg whites into the

circle, using the back of the spoon to smooth the top and sides of the disk.

4. Bake in center of the oven for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 300 degrees and bake until the meringue has puffed up and cracked on the top and the surface is lightly browned to the color of café au lait, about 45 minutes more. Turn off the oven, prop the oven door open, and let the pavlova cool in the oven at least 30 minutes, to room temperature. This ensures a gradual cooling, which protects the delicate meringue.

5. Place the meringue on a cake plate. Whip the cream and sugar together until stiff. Spoon it in the center of the cooled pavlova and spread out to within ½ inch of the edge. Cover with the rhubarbraspberry mixture. Dot with flowers. To serve, slice into wedges with a serrated knife.

ROASTED RHUBARB

• 4 long stalks rhubarb, trimmed and washed (8-10 ounce bag of frozen is OK too)

• ¼ cup light-bodied red wine

• ¼ cup sugar

• ½ vanilla bean, split and scraped, or ½ teaspoon vanilla paste

• 1 teaspoon cornstarch

• ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut rhubarb into 1-inch sections. In a bowl, combine the wine, sugar, vanilla bean, corn starch, and cinnamon. Add the rhubarb and toss to coat. Pour into a casserole or gratin dish and roast until tender, about 20 to 25 minutes. When the fruit is done, remove it and let cool, then gently fold in the raspberries. Use to top pavlova.

Is there a recipe you’re dying to have? E-mail us at thedish@jwcmedia.com and we’ll start digging.

as told to Wendy Franzen photography by JM Creative & Co

LAKE FOREST NATIVE Ellie Nottoli is the founder and mastermind behind elliestyled, a modern-luxe lifestyling company specializing in parties and events. Known for seamlessly incorporating clients’ visions and décor into her dreamy tablescapes: Ellie’s work is a valuable commodity for those seeking a standout celebration. Here she shares with Forest & Bluff her styling secrets, entertaining ethos, and a brand-new concept perfect for these unique times.

My summer entertaining style focuses on seasonally appropriate details. I prefer to gather outdoors, and perhaps that means in an unexpected setting. A table in the grass or garden, for example, has a tablescape incorporating color and elements of the season; sometimes that means using fresh produce on the tables along with florals as a centerpiece. A beach setting could include objects such as shells and rocks, referencing the location. The menu is carefully chosen to complement the decor.

I have always loved hosting gatherings and found the need for an elevated experience in entertaining. My adoration of art and design translated into styling events, and I started elliestyled to help clients think out of the box while planning parties. A cocktail party, for example, shouldn’t always have to be rinse and repeat. We are experiencing a movement of entertaining at home ... bringing back the dinner party. A comfortable, approachable style to entertaining is best ... not fussy, but unexpected, chic, and beautiful, and always plenty of candlelight.

From intimate weddings to birthday parties, showers, and dinner parties, I strive to create experiences through art and design, incorporating them in every event’s aesthetic. Layers of texture and embellishment add to the experience and unpredictable visual. My personal style includes juxtaposing chosen materials—mixing fine china and vintage glassware

with organic materials, and incorporating beautiful linens and handmade parting gifts. A signature of mine has become a beautifully styled bar with accessorized back bar shelves. Every single person approaches a bar at a party, so I create an experience through design and interaction with the bartender using beautiful glassware, a lovely presentation of ingredients (such as decanting all the liquor and syrups out of unsightly bottles), and the perfect seasonal garnish.

My favorite things about work are manifesting joy, witnessing one’s special celebrations, and working with clients to create experiences for their guests, such as incorporating personal touches and sentimentality. I welcome the challenge of creating unique and exclusive events for every client. I adore working with other creatives in the industry to bring details to life, and collaborating with other artists. I curate a team through relationships with high quality, tried and true vendor partners, often using boutique rental companies and small flower farms.

Working out of Scott Street Studio in Lake Forest, I produce my events using elliestyled inventory I have collected over the years. Rental items are available as an add-on to any gathering, as well as an a la carte

service. Cheese and charcuterie grazing boards have become a signature at events where I offer them in sizes ranging from 2 to 10 feet on black walnut or lucite boards. I also teach an elliestyled charcuterie class showing guests how to style their own grazing boards at home. Newest offerings include curated celebration packages. In this time of social distancing, there is still a need for honoring certain celebrations, including birthdays, Father’s Day, and graduations. I have partnered with several local women-owned businesses to create a hand-delivered package, which includes all the party essentials—designer paper products, décor, confetti, playful straws, oversized balloons, tassel garlands, a decorated cake, and a flower bouquet. Everything you need to set up a small-scale fête at home. The packages are colorful, vibrant and playful ... precisely the kiss of happiness we crave in this moment!

Vendors for Ellie’s Celebration Package include The Bent Fork Bakery, The Flower House, Sparkle and Twine Party Design, and Bash Party Goods. For more information on elliestyled, visit elliestyled.com.

NURTURING ROSES

A Monthly Guide for Seasoned and Aspiring Green Thumbs

42 FOREST & BLUFF
wisdom by Steve Fiore
HOUSE & GARDEN
IN THE GARDEN

JUNE USHERS IN THE FIRST, long-awaited roses of the season. All gardeners know the delight imparted by these classic beauties is often eclipsed by their infamous need to be pampered. Flawless and sturdy dark green leaves quickly devolve into sad yellow swaths spotted in black, while soft blossoms exuding that famous perfume become the devoured, ramshackle dwellings of Japanese beetles. Truth be told, I pulled up all of my rose bushes last season because they were draining me of my gardening joy.

Not willing to give up, I turned to Steve Fiore of Rocco Fiore & Sons for advice. Fiore learned the tips-of-the-trade from his father Rocco, a master gardener and lifelong rose devotee. He explains that laying the proper groundwork and following a few important steps will help create happy and robust specimens that offer years of enjoyment.

Rocco Fiore & Sons will create the ultimate rose garden for you, from design to installation and weekly maintenance. For inquiries, visit roccofiore.com.

ROSE RULES:

1. Choose a spot with six to eight hours of sunlight. Roses thrive in direct, full sun.

2. Install proper drainage. When the Fiore team installs proper rose gardens, they excavate down 16 to 18 inches, add 4 to 6 inches of gravel, then top with a mixture of sand, planting soil, and organic fertilizer. Failure is often a result of heavy, clay-laden soil, so this step is extremely important.

3. Create airflow. The gravel foundation assists in this, but you should also plant roses 3-feet apart.

4. Water from the base, not from the top. Sprinklers and over-the-top watering practices promote mold and fungus, and along with it, the dreaded black-spotted yellow leaves. If leaves do become infected, remove from the plant and ground immediately, and dispose of them rather than composting.

5. Fertilize every twelve days with a well-balanced, organic rose fertilizer for healthy growth.

6. Deadhead regularly. Encourage more blooms by removing spent ones, pruning at the first five-leaflet branch. Cut at an angle, just above an outward facing leaflet.

7. Choose your plants wisely. Shrub roses, for instance, are much lower maintenance, and plants grown locally are more likely to thrive. Rocco Fiore & Sons has their own 200-acre nursery where they grow many of the roses they install.

8. Control pests like Japanese beetles and ward off disease with weekly treatments of organic Neem oil, applying in early morning or evening when beneficial insects are the least active.

FOREST & BLUFF 43
HOUSE & GARDEN
IN THE GARDEN
Decades later, Rocco Sr. poses in his rose garden. In this image, a young Rocco Sr. tends to his beloved roses.

PleaseBees,

GORGEOUS, HEALTHY GARDENS rely on busy bees. Think of yourself as the ultimate matchmaker: choosing a variety of flowers and herbs that bloom from early spring through late autumn will provide nutrients for a bee’s entire life-cycle. You will be richly rewarded for your thoughtfulness with thriving beds and borders.

Planting flowers with easy access to pollen and nectar will also encourage bees to linger in your garden. Here you will find a list of blooms that entice throughout the seasons:

SPRING

Snowdrop, crocus, grape hyacinth, pansy, fritillaria, hellebore, phlox, peony, chive, mint

SUMMER

Poppy, milkweed, snapdragon, daisy, bee balm, cosmos, foxglove, marigold, nasturtium, single and semi-double rose varieties, lavender, catmint, delphinium

AUTUMN

Aster, zinnia, sedum, borage (starflower), anise hyssop, black-eyed Susan, oregano, thyme

Three additional factors in creating a garden filled with buzzing pollinators:

1) Keep your garden chemical-free. Pesticides and herbicides are toxic to bees. If you need willing assistants to keep detrimental insects at bay, beneficial ladybugs are readily available online.

2) Offer your garden guests a fresh drink of water, served in a shallow vessel. Bees need water for cooling, digestion, and humidity control in the hive.

3) Choose non-hybridized plant specimens. Hybridized plants produce little nectar or pollen and therefore have much less to offer.

SERVING UP SUCCESS

ALEXANDRE COTARD, The Racquet Club of Lake Bluff’s Junior Program Director and Head Tennis Professional, coaches young athletes with a focus on characterbuilding, care, and self-esteem.

“For me, it all revolves around care. Care instills responsibility in what you do. Caring for something makes you want to work harder and aspire to excellence. It goes beyond your own work—it creates respect for other’s work and builds strong friendships along the way,” shares Cotard. “My coaching philosophy embraces these everyday life principles.”

Alex Cotard comes from a tennis playing family. He was raised in the beautiful village of Roquebrune Sur Argens in Provence, where, he says “everyone was playing the game—grandparents, parents, cousins … I got my first racquet at four-years-old and remember spending a lot of time hitting against the wall.” His father is a tennis coach for the French Federation and taught Alex the technical fundamentals, and he naturally inherited a passion for the game. “My father taught me and my brother, Nico (also on the coaching staff at RCLB), to grow and become better players, then later mentoring us to become better teachers.” Alex played his first official tournament at age ten in the French Riviera on red clay. Though he doesn’t recall the outcome, he vividly remembers loving the vibe, the intensity, and the competitiveness. “I couldn’t wait to play my next one,” he shares.

The U.S., for him, was always the country of sports and achievement. After moving to the United States at age 22, drawn here by a desire to “get closer to the winning culture and passion for sports,” he connected with French tennis coach Sylvain Guichard, the former

head coach at Mississippi State, who had become the general manager at RCLB. Guichard introduced him to a game plan of precise technical instruction, and with full support from club owners, Lake Bluff and Lake Forest residents Dan Bruch and Gary Janko, he enthusiastically joined the team in 2008.

Passion for RCLB, his fellow staff members, and their students is clear. Cotard shares, “As a coach, I like being on the court with our students, coaching close to the action. As a director, what truly makes me proud is seeing our teaching method and care paying off. Also, seeing the chemistry between our coaches and students on all the courts, having fun improving all the skills required by our sport,

and building self-esteem and confidence.” He believes it is RCLB’s excellent attention to detail and the quality instruction by all 15 pros that make it a particularly attractive club. “Many coaching programs and academies get lost in the process of growing the top and lose focus on growing from within. Our program’s success lays upon growth from the ground up.”

RCLB’s ground-up approach results in large student retention and constant growth, from early stages to state, national, and collegiate level champions. It is important for Cotard to note, however, that the coaches “always take into account the needs and expectations of every player, whether they are new to the game or a nationally ranked junior player.” The satisfaction of all players is incredibly important. And with care and character at the core of their coaching ethos, it is no surprise that Cotard’s most emphatic expression is this: “The RCLB coaching staff holds a deep appreciation for our members and our amazing ownership and cannot wait to see everyone back on the court. ”

HELP FOR TEENS

ADOLESCENT AND TEENAGE ANXIETY is rapidly on the rise. Over the past 10 years, the incidence has gone up significantly—greater than 20 percent. Nearly 1 out of 3 teenagers will suffer from an anxiety disorder. This can lead to major depression, substance abuse, and suicide.

There are many reasons that our children are developing anxiety: genetics, brain chemistry, and life experiences. Children today are facing increased social pressures that did not previously exist. Social media, online bullying, increased exposure to negative events, and increased educational expectations are overwhelming our youth.

First and foremost, it is important for us as parents to identify the signs of anxiety in our children: recurring fears, irritability, avoiding activities and social interactions, dropping grades, trouble sleeping, substance use, and constant physical complaints (headaches, stomach aches, and fatigue). It is crucial to identify these symptoms as early as possible and have open communication with your kids. It is important to discuss these issues and have empathy and understanding. Do not hesitate to bring up any concerns with your pediatrician. Oftentimes, they may refer you to a mental health professional for an evaluation and further treatment.

If warranted, adolescent anxiety and depression is treatable with greater than 80 percent efficacy. Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are usually the first-line treatments, which essentially help the individual change how they view, process, and respond to stressful situations.

While an anti-depressant such as an SSRI may be prescribed, these medications can take up to 6 weeks to work and have undesired side effects (fatigue, weight gain, emotional dulling, muscle aches, and potentially worsening of suicidal thoughts). In some cases, it can take years to find the right medication or combination thereof.

A novel treatment that we have been using successfully at IV Solutions is Ketamine. We have achieved greater than a 90 percent

success rate among our adolescent population and have more experience with this age group than any area clinic. Ketamine is a very safe treatment with almost no lingering side effects. With highly trained physicians and nurses, ketamine is administered in a calm and relaxing environment. Instead of waiting months for a pill to work, you can see results within days or even after the first session. Combined with CBT and therapy, ketamine can produce even better results. Some patients have been able to decrease or completely wean off their medications, freeing them from those unfavorable side effects. We are happy to work with your child’s health care provider to develop an inclusive and transparent plan specifically tailored for them. Help your child live his or her best life!

Allusionism

A new art form from Lake Forest inventor Jerome Caruso blends art, science,

vention of “invisible refrigeration” for SubZero, and, for designing the look of Wolf cooking ranges, integrating both into the seamless paneled “Evolution System” that revolutionized the look of modern home kitchens today. And then there is his furniture design work. That includes everything from the Bi-Cast chair—the first, completely machine-produced stacking chair, (included in the permanent American Arts Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago,) to his award-winning ergonomic Celle chair for Herman Miller.

As he did with those revolutionary designs, Caruso’s new Allusionism art form blends art, science, and technology.

SWIRLING

among blooms of creative thought in the imaginative world of inventors, the question, “What if I did this?” has prompted more discovery and ingenious solutions than any other. That’s certainly been true for Jerome Caruso, Lake Forest-based inventor, designer, and creator of a new art form he’s dubbed Allusionism.

In his lifetime, Caruso’s inventions and designs have resulted in more than 100 U.S. and international patents. He’s perhaps best known for the in-

“Over the past five decades,” says Caruso, “my interest in a physics approach to design led to inventions and breakthrough consumer products for international companies. But I’ve always also been interested in pure art. And so, I followed this same physics-based approach in my quest to create transformative art.”

Decades ago, Caruso started experimenting with unique ways of painting. Eventually, he developed a process that creates an evolution of forms and colors that are not visible to the human eye without magnification. Using hiresolution digital technology, Caruso magnifies his paintings, creating abstract artworks that can be scaled to wall-sized dimensions for dramatic effect.

The artworks are brilliant, swirling, expressive landscapes of color that range in emotive content from peaceful and soothing to passionate and fiery.

“My intent,” says Caruso, “was to use color and detail to create a world of imagination and

and technology.

meaning open to individual interpretation. The art often alludes to nature, evoking memories and experiences that can be very personal.”

The Allusionism process (patent pending) begins with a small original painting Caruso calls a “cell.” To make each cell, Caruso visualizes a composition and works with a limited palette of reds, blues, and greens.

“I paint with liquid colors that are always in a fluid state on a small panel,” he explains. “The paints are formulated to encourage microscopic action. As the paints flow and move, they chemically blend into secondary and tertiary hues, producing an evolution of colors and shapes. This process creates some effects that I can anticipate and influence with my brush and timing during the various stages of drying. Other effects are surprises that take the art in new directions I’m excited to pursue.”

Once the colors are no longer liquid and the painting dries, the cell is complete and ready to be magnified with high-resolution digital photography. With magnification, barelyperceptible shapes and color variations in the original cell become apparent.

“Imagine looking at a flower petal or butterfly wing under a microscope,” says Caruso. “It’s a bit like that.”

Finished works are printed as large-scale giclées, that are then mounted and sealed with a polymer coating, sized according to the display space.

But in the first public display of an Allusionism work, a Caruso painting, titled, Dawn has been translated into seven, 14-foot-tall, stainedglass windows newly installed at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital’s chapel.

For this installation, the tall, round profile of the chapel needed to be taken into consid-

eration. For best effect, the painting was divided into seven sections, balanced to achieve a one-vista dynamic. These were then created into interior art-glass panels by the renowned stained-glass studio Franz Meyer, of Munich, Germany. The studio used a special technique of applying ceramic frit (silica and fluxes fused at high temperatures to make colored glass) to each panel. This resulted in perfect, glass representations of the fine details in Caruso’s painting, without the distraction of metal fretwork divisions commonly seen in the stained glass windows of churches and cathedrals.

Also revolutionary, Caruso conceptualized a special lighting system to illuminate the panels throughout the day and night, which adjusts to ambient, exterior light levels. To accomplish this, Caruso placed a light source at the top of each panel, between the external, insulated panes and the art glass. LED components were chosen to create a graduated light level— brighter at the top, and diminishing downward. The resulting effect is both contemplative and uplifting.

“It has been especially gratifying that the first public installation of a work of Allusionism is in this setting,” says Caruso. “A hospital is a unique theater with high drama and the full range of human emotions expressed daily. And the chapel in such an institution, even more so. The installation of Dawn here, brings with it the hope that people will enter into the chapel and envision the bright possibilities of a new day.”

A New CHAPTER

60 FOREST & BLUFF
words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Brooke Hummer
As one of the world’s most famous widowers, Jason Rosenthal pens a memoir about love, loss, and resilience.

SOME SAY timing is everything and author Jason Rosenthal may now agree. His memoir, My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me, a book primarily about losing his wife Amy Krouse Rosenthal to cancer, was released April 21 as the world was home sheltering in place.

“I’m not sure I’d call this perfect timing,” says Rosenthal whose promotional book tour had been canceled, as well all of the celebratory events surrounding it. “But it is interesting that my book came out at a time when so many people are experiencing some type of a loss—whether it be the loss of a loved one or the loss of a job, whatever it may be—loss is loss. And that’s much of what my book talks about.”

Rosenthal was catapulted into the spotlight by his wife—famous children’s author and former Lake Forester Amy Krouse Rosenthal—when three years ago she wrote a love letter to her husband as she battled through her final days with ovarian cancer. It ran as a New York Times “Modern Love” column, under the headline, “You May Want to Marry My Husband.” It was a personal ad, of sorts, for a potential suitor for her husband.

“I have been married to the most extraordinary man for 26 years,” she wrote. “I was planning on another 26 together … If he sounds like a prince and our relationship seems like fairy tale, it’s not too far off, except for the all of the regular stuff that comes from two and a half decades or playing house together. And the part about me getting cancer. Blech … I am wrapping this up on Valentine’s Day, and the most

genuine, non-vase-oriented gift I can hope for is that the right person reads this, finds Jason, and another love story begins.”

To no one’s surprise, this selfless love story went viral. More than five million people from around the world read it. Yet Amy never knew of all of the lives she touched as she passed away at home in hospice care, 10 days after it was published, on March 13, 2017.

“Those days and weeks after Amy died were all a bit of a fog,” Rosenthal says. “She died so soon after the story came out that there wasn’t much time to absorb what was happening.” Instead, Rosenthal turned his attentions inward and focused on his three children with Amy—Justin, Miles, and Paris—and their healing in the aftermath. He also remained very close to Amy’s parents who still lived in Lake Forest at the time. “We spent many Sundays with the kids traveling the 26 miles between our house and the Krouses where we would spend the day with Amy’s siblings, spouses, and children,” he remembers. “Family was everything and is everything. We have an incredible network of family and friends—mine included—that got us through those dark first days.”

But Amy’s New York Times piece elevated Rosenthal to a very public stage and to being “that husband,” he says. “I went from being an attorney living a quiet life to someone the world could turn to for advice on grief.”

A year after Amy’s death, Rosenthal delivered his first TED Talk on loss. “I think I was surprised at how much my story connected with people,” he explains. “That’s when I realized that it doesn’t matter what kind of loss it is to feel grief, loss is loss. I was able to tell people that you can be in the worst depths of grief, in a serious period of loss, and still come out on the other side. It will pass.”

Rosenthal’s TED Talk set the foundation for his memoir, My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me

“I think subconsciously I had been thinking about taking a step back from my law and real estate career for a while,” he says. “Writing this book really became a full-time job and gave me a good excuse to evaluate what I was doing with my life and where I was spending my time.” In addition to writing, Rosenthal set up a foundation in Amy’s name, funding ovarian cancer research and children’s literacy, an organization he oversees from the dream home he built with his wife in Chicago, close to Wrigley Field.

A story with Rosenthal would be incomplete without knowing if his wife’s plea for a love match for her husband had been made. And while he provides no details, he confirms that he is indeed in a relationship.

When asked if writing his memoir is the end of one chapter or the beginning of another, it’s the only time Rosenthal hesitates to answer. “Amy gave me permission very publicly, in a way only she could, to find happiness again. So, I don’t know. It’s definitely a new chapter and one where I’m open to see what comes.”

Jason Rosenthal’s My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me: A Memoir is available at the Lake Forest Book Store, lakeforestbookstore.com.

ITALIAN RENAISSANCE

Rocco Fiore & Sons crafts

North Shore landscapes with centuries-old European ideals and traditions.

IT IS NOT OFTEN THAT ONE defines a successful business as operating in only a 15-mile corridor, but that unique aspect truly defines local landscapers, Rocco Fiore & Sons. A notable presence on the North Shore since 1947, their story is one that embodies centuries-old European ideals. Immigrating to America from Italy in 1938 at 17-yearsold, Rocco Fiore brought with him a passion for horticulture and a natural sense of space. Raised in Valenzano (in Italy’s Puglia region), Rocco’s interest in plants developed “in the old country, where they grew grapes, olives, and figs to sell at the open-air markets,” his sons Rocco Jr. and Steve explain. Settling in Highwood, Rocco initially worked at his uncle’s nursery. After noticing the increasing popularity of family-oriented suburban

64 FOREST & BLUFF
Images from a Rocco Fiore & Sons landscape design

neighborhoods, Rocco seized the opportunity and started his own residential landscape design and maintenance company in 1947.

Rocco’s business began as a small venture run out of his home. In that era before the ease and efficiency of modern machinery, “it could take two days to mow the large lawns common to the North Shore,” his sons note. Truly a family business, Rocco’s wife, Rose, was an integral part of the operation. “Mom was Dad’s bookkeeper, receptionist, and scheduler—she did everything,” says Steve, including caring for their three children Rocco Jr., Steve, and JoAnn.

In the nascent days of the company, formal training was nonexistent—a hurdle which proved unproblematic for the innate talents of Rocco, who learned as he went and was a natural at all things plant-related. Tapping sugar maple trees in his nursery, Rocco would boil down the amber liquid in his kitchen until maple syrup emerged ready to accompany family breakfasts. After dinner, his sons recall their father heading to the backyard nursery to work on grafting plants. And every winter, Rocco would make wine and paint landscape scenes. “The Italian way of life which revolves around family, was so prevalent in our childhood,” remembers Steve. “It centered around the dinner table and the outside garden, where half the land

was devoted to color and the other half to vegetables.”

“We still do things the old-fashioned way,” says Steve. “We want landscapes to evolve and look great 20 years from now, not to look great for five years and then start again.” To achieve this, designs are environmentally sensitive and focus on the use of native plants. Planting plans are full of depth achieved through layers of groundcover, shrubs, perennials, and trees; bare soil can rarely be seen. Each element coming out of their talented mason shop, from bluestone walks to custom garden features, is constructed with the old-world craftsmanship and knowledge that Rocco brought from Italy.

Rocco Jr. believes the guiding principles of the company, originating with his father, are what contribute to their longevity and set them apart in the industry: Produce the ultimate quality of work, deliver the highest standard of service, and assure good value through cost-effective design. This ethos has led the company to serve families across three generations, truly a remarkable feat. “In some cases,” says Rocco Jr., “we’ve been on a property for 70 years, through three or four owners. I remember seeing kids in diapers who are our clients now.”

From history-making events attended by Presidents Kennedy and Nixon to intimate garden weddings, Rocco Fiore & Sons has ensured their clients’ landscapes are well-prepared and polished to a sheen, ensuring a picture-perfect environment. The company also places an emphasis on giving back to the local community. For their 60th anniversary ten years ago, the company donated shade trees to local communities along the North Shore—beautifying the towns entrusted to them by their clients.

Rocco Fiore & Sons is now a sizable operation with more than 300 employees, run by Rocco Jr. and Steve. Following their father’s vision, the sons have cultivated a group of talented employees. The company, with the dedication of this group has received national and state awards based on design, construction, and maintenance. Owning and managing a nursery operation with 20 acres of plant material in Antioch and 200 acres of shade trees in Bristol, Wisconsin, the company encompasses all aspects of the landscaping business. Abiding by Rocco’s motto of, “Take your time, do it right the first time,” surely guarantees the company will be serving a fourth generation of clients.

A REALTOR FOR LIFE

Often the best strategies are doomed by forces outside of a business owner’s control or by poor execution. Other times, a well-executed plan meets the right market conditions or a pressing need, and great results follow. If recent history is any indication, super-realtor Dawn McKenna and her Dawn McKenna Group have the perfect plan for today’s market.

Having achieved as much success as possible in Hinsdale, including regularly ranking since 2007 as Coldwell Banker Realty’s No. 1 agent in Hinsdale, the state of Illinois, and the Midwest; by 2016, McKenna’s clients started asking for help elsewhere. Most often requested were Western Springs, Chicago’s downtown neighborhoods, North Shore suburbs, and Naples, Florida. Sensing an opportunity, McKenna formed the Dawn McKenna Group. Choosing local agents that shared her vision, McKenna built one of the nation’s most successful real estate teams with 19 agents and offices in Hinsdale, Winnetka, Lake Forest, Chicago, and Naples.

McKenna’s strategy is simple—expand into feeder and destination markets with local experts and help them leverage McKenna’s stylish marketing, award-winning website (dawnmckennagroup.com), powerful social media presence, and global reach.

“We wanted to be there for our clients’ whole life cycle, from their first Chicago apartment to their move to the suburbs, and then when they’re ready for Naples’s sun, taxes, or both,” McKenna says

It looks like McKenna was right. With over $249 million in transactions and more than 500 satisfied Chicago renters in 2019, the Dawn McKenna Group was Coldwell Banker Realty’s No. 1 team in not only Hinsdale, but Western Springs, the state of Illinois, and the Midwest, as well as the No. 3 team nationally. The group’s new rental team shot to No. 1 in Illinois and No. 10 nationally among Coldwell Banker Realty’s large rental teams, while the Naples office is now Coldwell Banker Realty’s No. 2 Naples small team and a Coldwell Banker International President’s Circle top 100 Florida small team.

Then Covid-19 broke out and, despite real estate being deemed essential, many realtors froze. Not McKenna.

“Whether due to job changes, financial issues, or pre-Covid-19

plans, our clients still needed to buy, sell, and rent,” said McKenna. “We told them we’d do what it would take to be there for them.”

Rapidly adopting new techniques and technologies to proven practices, the Dawn McKenna Group has been there. Since March 1, the Dawn McKenna Group has closed more than $76 million in sales with more than $46 million under contract.

“We’re not nurses or doctors or first responders. They’re heroes. But I’m very proud of my team,” McKenna says. “Our clients need us and we’re finding ways to help them.”

Whether it was the booming stock market, the disparity in taxes between Illinois and Florida, or a global pandemic, McKenna’s strategy met a market primed and ready for a truly full-service real estate team. When this crisis passes many things may be forever changed, but it will always be true that when a smart, well-executed strategy meets a market opportunity or a critical need, great results follow. McKenna and the Dawn McKenna Group prove that point.

The quest continues. As we age the skin loses collagen and elastin resulting in laxity, wrinkles, and sagging. Traditionally as a plastic Surgeon we resort to surgery to remove or tighten loose skin. The trend over the past twenty years is for less invasive or minimally invasive treatments or procedures to treat these vexing problems.

Since I can’t operate on myself and I’m a bit of a control freak, I’ve invested considerable sums in state-of-the-art technologies that can help reverse or delay the aging process. All of these technologies have been tested on me. The latest is Genius by Lutronic.

The trick in any of these technologies is to deliver energy beneath the skin to the dermal layer without injury to the surface skin. Genius uses unique and intelligent technology to help protect the top layers of the skin while providing real-time feedback during the procedure. This allows for treatments on all skin types and colors. We can deliver customized energy precisely to the dermis; it creates micro-injury to jump start your body’s natural healing process to firm and renew skin. I can deliver precise customized energy where I want with less pain than any other previous technology.

Genius treatments help provide lasting, unparalled outcomes with intelligent RF (radio frequency) technology, delivering thermal energy through micro-needles into the dermis.

Treatment takes about one hour. A topical anesthetic is used. There is minimal downtime and mild redness and swelling for 24 hours. Results begin to show in 3 to 4 weeks. Any part of the body where there is laxity can be treated. Dramatic results may require multiple treatments. Typically 2 to 3 treatments give optimal results.
