It’s that time of year when we are tired of the cold weather and yearn for any small sign of spring. So it’s fitting that this month’s cover girls are Karen and Stevie Marie Mardjetko of StevieWren—their bubbly personalities and dazzling jewelry designs are full of color and life. Consider it a symbolic respite from the tail-end of winter.
We also have our favorite local writer Ann Marie Scheidler introducing us to Lake Foresters old and new. First are Drs. David and Mark Hamming. The brothers—both secondgeneration orthopedic surgeons who followed in the footsteps of their father Edward—tell us about their tandem journey to their current careers.
Next we meet Frank Visconti. In January, he took the reins at the beloved Caputo Cheese Market, rebranding it as Visconti Cheese Market & Deli. Let us introduce you to what hungry patrons can expect to change (or stay the same).
In our Teen section, we feature Aidan Fowler, an ambitious student at Lake Forest High School. The freshman has used his passion for music and gadgets to launch a popular professional DJ business. Perhaps you’ll find him at work during Lake Bluff’s upcoming Fourth of July parade.
Longing for a dose of culture and community? Check out our Talk of the Town for details on Laura Munson’s upcoming talk at Glen Rowan House. The popular writer (and Lake Forest native) will be making a stop here to promote her first published novel, Willa’s Grove. More than a work of fiction, it is meant to inspire people to cultivate connections with others.
Finally, our Publisher’s Profiles section checks in on the current real estate market with @properties agent Roni Nanini, while Dr. Bal Nandra introduces readers to innovate ketamine treatments for potential “life-changing results.”
I hope this issue staves off the last of the winter blues.
Enjoy the pictures, and good reading.

Munson is careful to note that while her Haven gatherings influenced the book, none of the material was mined from a specific person. “None of these characters is me. None of them is anyone I know. And yet … they are all of us.”
So now what? This is the central question for four women stuck in major midlife crossroads in Willa’s Grove, the debut novel by New York Times best-selling author, Laura Munson.
“We all have to ask and answer that question many times in our lives,” says Munson. “Reinvention is a theme in my own life. And I’ve learned that we don’t have to do it alone.”
Munson, a Lake Forest native, found commercial success as a writer in 2009 after giving a fresh and honest account of how she navigated a marital crisis in The New York Times’ Modern Love column. The popularity of the piece led to the release of her memoir, This Is Not The Story You Think It Is. She has split the last decade between traveling to promote the book, which was released in nine countries, and hosting her acclaimed Haven Writing Retreats— five-day workshops in Whitefish, Montana, where she has resided for almost 30 years.
“The book is inspired by what I’ve seen at Haven,” she says. “It can be so powerful to take a break from your life in an intentional way… and to tap into your self-awareness in a safe and supportive new environment. There is a huge hole in our culture when it comes to authentic self-expression, and so often people need guidance in finding what’s special about what they have to say. What they want. Who they really are at their core. You don’t have to be a writer to come to Haven, but writing is an exceptional tool to help you move forward in your life. I’ve seen it transform people over and over again.”
She hopes that the relatability of her four protagonists, and what they model in the book, will inspire readers to create their own weeklong interludes to help find their “so now what” answers. “This book is not about a writing retreat at all. But it is about the power of temporary community. These characters have real conflicts in their lives, and they have been scared to reach out to their communities,” says Munson. “They’ve become islands, like so many of us tend to do when we’re in crisis. Instead, what we need is community. And sometimes we have to leave home for the express intention of building bridges back to our daily lives. I am hoping to start a movement!”
On Wednesday, March 11th at 10:30 a.m., Munson will try to ignite her movement at the Glen Rowan House at Lake Forest College. She will discuss Willa’s Grove, read selected passages, and sign copies.
While it’s only one of many stops on a multi-city tour, it will hold a special place in her heart. “I still call Lake Forest ‘home,’” she says. “The first thing I’ll do is go to the beach, then walk to the flagpole in Market Square, and of course … have a hot dog at Pasquesi’s!” Reminiscing about the village, Munson shares a memory of her late father, who would walk home from the Lake Forest train station every day after work and open the door with a declaration—one that will always inform her work.
“He’d say, ‘Do you know how lucky we are to live in this town?’ And then he’d add, ‘People really are the same everywhere.’” I fastened that to my heart as a child, and I live with it as my motto. We all want to be loved and accepted, to belong, and to have true community around us. I find that in my readers. I find that at my retreats. I find that in my travels. I find that in my life. I can’t wait to be back home!”

Despite its status as a rare condition, Munchausen syndrome by proxy has captivated consumers of pop culture. It is central to the plot of critically acclaimed TV shows (most notably Hulu’s The Act and HBO’s Sharp Objects), the topic of widely read books, and the subject of true crime podcasts. But Darling Rose Gold picks up where other stories leave off. The debut novel by Chicago-based author Stephanie Wrobel imagines the dynamics of a mother-daughter relationship after the jig is up—and without spoiling it, the results are grim. On Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m., Wrobel will make an appearance at the Lake Forest Book Store to discuss the book, which is already being praised by established authors as one of this year’s must-reads. Refreshments will be served and copies will be available for purchase and signing. For more information visit lakeforestbookstore.com

been used to successfully treat depression for more than 10 years. It has a safe profile when administered by an experienced anesthesiologist. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA cell receptors, which raises levels of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Ketamine also remaps and stimulates growth of nerve elements for long-term relief of clinical depression and essentially does a “reboot” of your brain. In fact, sophisticated imaging studies on mouse brain nerve cells has shown that ketamine can stimulate this nerve growth or neurogenesis as early as 24 hours after a single ketamine infusion.
The year 2020 brings us a new year, a new decade, and the opportunity for a new beginning. I’m Dr. Bal Nandra, Medical Director of IV Solution and I want to tell you how ketamine infusions can treat your clinical depression and change your life in a few days.
As far back as ten years ago, ketamine was noticed to have a profound and rapid effect on improving the symptoms of depression, and many strong clinical studies have since repeatedly supported this. In fact, ketamine can be up to 80 percent effective for treatment of resistant depression, or TRD, which is defined as clinical depression that has failed treatment by two or more antidepressant medications that were taken for an adequate course of therapy.
Because of its success in treating depression, ketamine has been and continues to be also studied in treatment of other mental disorders with very good results. It is for this reason that ketamine has been called “the most significant advancement in mental health in half a century.” As part of this revolution, IV Solutions & Ketamine Centers is the first and most experienced private medical facility to make this treatment available in Chicago. The clinic offers customized therapy in a confidential setting with anesthesiologists, registered nurses, private treatment rooms, and skilled staff.
Developed in the 1960’s as an anesthetic drug, ketamine has
Although primarily used to treat major depression, ketamine can also be just as effective when used to treat bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD, and even OCD utilizing modified protocols. It is typically effective within hours to days with minimal side effects, as opposed to oral antidepressants which are only effective in about 40 percent of patients, take a month or longer to work, and have many undesirable side effects. Many patients have improvement after their first or second treatments and are comfortable while they are receiving the treatment. Many people, with the guidance of their physician, may be able to decrease or even eliminate their other medications over time.
After the series of six 45-minute infusions for depression done over a period of two to three weeks, patients typically report relief of symptoms for many weeks to months, after which time booster infusions may be scheduled as needed. Patients can inquire directly for the treatment or can be referred by their physician or mental health professional. Our clinic prefers to integrate your psychiatrist and mental health providers into your care.
“I noticed a change the day after my first treatment,” says patient Kathy Wrubleski. “I think clearly, I make decisions effortlessly, I am calm. I’m fully present in the moment and I get goose bumps just thinking about how much I am now loving life. I liken it to waking from a coma. I have to learn how to live again.”
IV Solutions and Ketamine Centers is located at 300 Village Green Road, Suite 225 in Lincolnshire and at 712 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. 195 S DANBURY COURT, LAKE FOREST NORWICH COURT, LAKE BLUFF 755 S CAMELOT COURT, LAKE FOREST2020 marks the 31st Art of Caring, Catholic Charities’ signature annual event. The benefit, to be held on Saturday, April 25 at the historic Deer Path Inn, will feature an evening Mass, dinner, and live entertainment— all with the goal of raising funds for Lake County’s largest human services agency.
This year includes a record seven co-chairs for the event. Together they are a clear example of the strength and drive of the Lake County Women’s Board in their commitment to furthering opportunity and quality of life in their community. We asked each woman to tell us what assuming this role means to them.

I love being on this board because of the many people that Catholic Charities directly impacts through its many services; I’m overwhelmed by people’s generosity, and inspired by the work of these wonderful women.

I’ve had the pleasure of serving on the Lake County Board since 2008. I remember seeking them out because I wanted to strengthen and support those in need right in our community. The more I learned about our board and all the amazing ways they help, I knew I was in the right place.
It was easy for me to commit to cochairing the Art of Caring because I have known this great group of women for years; it’s a wonderful opportunity to use my time and talent to raise money for the multiple wonderful organizations Catholic Charities supports.
I came across Catholic Charities through the Department of Veterans Affairs, where I am employed. I’m impressed with the amount of services provided to communities in need, and grateful for the ability to participate and volunteer.
The fact that this is a faith-based agency means that there is an added dimension to the way they provide everything. It does not mean that they deliver those services only to Catholics—in fact, it’s anything but. However, I think it’s important to celebrate and support what our church does best.
I volunteered and eventually worked for Catholic Charities in the ’90s, and have seen first-hand the important impact they have in our communities. It is truly a privilege to be part of a group of caring women focused on giving back.
We work together so that our contributions, both big and small, add up to truly make a difference for someone in need.
Allendale Shelter Club hosted a Night of Surprises at a private club in Lake Forest featuring cocktails, food stations, dancing, and surprises—including a flash mob of dancers dressed as the event’s food and beverage servers, a balloon drop, and luxurious giveaways. Presenting Sponsor Grove 1935 also surprised guests with a dollar-for-dollar match for all gifts up to $25,000, helping catapult the evening’s fundraising efforts to more than $200,000. The evening was chaired by Avery Keller, Jenny McKinney, and Meg Lynch, all of Lake Forest. Funds raised go directly to support the more than 800 at-risk youth and their families served annually by the Allendale Association. allendaleshelterclub.org

n 2015, Stevie Marie Mardjetko was living in New York City and working a day job in the medical field when she received a call from her mom, Karen.
Stevie, then 24, had recently graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music with a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. The Lake Forest native was in New York to pursue an opera career, but Karen proposed an alternative: moving home to become business partners. She didn’t have a plan—she wasn’t even exactly sure what they’d do—but she was confident that as a team, they would be a success. Her daughter accepted.
WORDS BY DEBBIE LEE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMESOne might say chasing rainbows is a fool’s errand, but the two literally did just that—and struck gold in the process. By the end of the next year, the Mardjetkos launched Stevie Wren, a fine jewelry line known for its use of multicolored diamonds.
“I come from a generation that forged women’s rights,” says Karen. “And I see that younger women lack mentorships; people aren’t really investing their time in them. So when I was ready to start a new business, I told [Stevie] she needed to be a part of it. We wanted to a fun
For the founders of Stevie Wren, the trials and tribulations of being a motherdaughter duo pays off.
lifestyle project, and jewelry kind of evolved from that.”
StevieWren (an amalgam of their first names) was initially conceived as an online retailer that carried other brands. In the name of research, the two took off for trips around the globe—Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa—to educate themselves about sourcing and jewelry-making techniques. But they quickly realized their ambitions were better served in the form of a namesake line.
“We would look at designs and think, ‘This would be better if you did this, or tried that,’ “ says Karen. “We started getting asked to design for other brands and manufacturers, so we thought, ‘If we’re going to that, then let’s just take a risk and do it ourselves.’”
They took an unorthodox approach, first showing their line at High Point Market, a luxury furniture showroom in North Carolina. The unintended benefit eschewing a jewelry sales rep was that it gave the women time to explore their style and find their niche.
“Where in the jewelry world were we going to fit in?” Karen asked. “Stevie would look in one direction—edgy, millennial— and I’d look in the other. We originally thought of designing for college girls, like gold-plated fashion jewelry. But my eye was going toward higher end—classic designs with long lasting form. Our emphasis as a company was to merge the aesthetics of both generations.”
The results of their something-for-everyone approach are dazzling, if not dizzying. There are classic tennis bracelets, of-themoment single studs and ear cuffs, and rings that can be stacked to the knuckles. Pieces can be custom designed with hand-selected stones in every color—a point of pride, as the Mardjetkos credit themselves with discovering the potential of colored diamonds before their competitors.
“Everyone here in the U.S. likes white diamonds,” says Karen. “We wanted to be different and separate ourselves from other lines. When we initially pitched buyers like Bergdorf and Neiman’s, they weren’t ready for us yet. But then they were, and we were there.”
Today, StevieWren designs are carried in upscale boutiques and at Neiman Marcus locations across the country. But earning
a place in top-tier showcases has been a journey that has tested— and strengthened—the bonds of the Mardjetko’s relationship.
“We are together 24 hours a day so it can be an emotional rollercoaster,” says Karen. “But at the end of the day, after a heated discussion, then it’s ‘What do you want to cook for dinner?’ It’s business and it’s stressful because we are a start-up, but we don’t take it personally.”
Like any partnership, their success comes down to compromise.
“My mom is good at the actual inspiration whereas I like styling and put things together well,” says Stevie. “It’s nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of, even if there are times when we don’t agree at all. Sometimes you have to let one person take over while the other sits back. There are things I wouldn’t think would be a best seller…”
“And vice versa!” Karen interjects. “But they are. And that’s what we love about this cross-generational thing. We are different people with different skill sets, so we fell into certain roles organically.”
But for mom, the business is about much more than bringing their bling to the masses. Karen was diagnosed with lymphoma this past October and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments ever since. (A special pendant necklace was released in her honor in February; proceeds will go towards cancer search.) As she battles the disease, it’s crucial that she imparts lessons about resilience and strength to her daughter.
“I feel like there’s this lack of sustainability to be empowered as a woman and have your own career and money,” she says. “I want Stevie to have that empowerment—to be her own person. If I was going to be in business with anybody, why not my daughter? There’s been so much growth and it’s fun to see her learn and take on leadership. Letting her take charge of certain things and learn about the pressure of owning your own company is something I enjoy.”
“Growing up we were always really close,” says Stevie. “Like best friends. And while I was in college we got even closer. Learning how to navigate this business together just brings another important aspect to our relationship.”

If you’re lucky enough to be invited to a family gathering at the Lake Forest home of Ed and Nancy Hamming and are in need of some medical attention, you’re in the right place. Ed, David, and Mark Hamming are orthopedic surgeons, Nancy is an ophthalmologist, and David’s wife, Katherine, is a pediatric otolaryngologist.
“To be honest, I don’t think I thought much about being a doctor when I was young even though both my parents were,” says Dr. Mark Hamming. “My parents didn’t talk much about work and both did such an incredible job balancing their demanding jobs with my brother, sister, and me.”
It wasn’t until Mark was a freshman in high school that he got to see his dad in action. “We were on spring break in Snowmass skiing and I broke my leg,” he says. “My dad took me down the mountain in a toboggan and then casted my leg right there at the mountain’s base. It healed perfectly.”
Today Mark and his brother Dr. David Hamming, who is three years older, work together in a practice dedicated to orthopedic medicine founded by their father Dr. Ed Hamming and their uncle, Dr. Bruce Hamming. The elder Hammings blended their practice with another surgical group that is today called Illinois Bone and Joint Institute (IBJI).
“When we were in high school, we used to work up in the hospital’s OR [operating room] in the summers,” David recalls. “That early exposure to medicine and the inner workings of the hospital definitely made an impression on us.”
Both David and Mark were accomplished high school athletes, receiving a number of commendations and state honors during their years at Lake Forest High School.
“The nature of orthopedics tends to draw those with an interest in sports,” Mark says. And depending on where they practice, being an athlete comes in handy for orthopedic doctors.
Following medical school and residency, both David and Mark had medical fellowships at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic that provided the official team doctors for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies, as well as athletes training for the Olympics.
Mark was one of the team doctors that traveled with the Olympic ski team training for Sochi in 2014. He spent time with the team in Chili, New Zealand, and Slovakia, as well as training courses throughout the U. S.
“I was very comfortable skiing and that was pretty much a job requirement when working with the team,” Mark says. “We’d travel up these runs with the athletes and at the end of the day we’d have to ski down these mountains that were like ice rinks
with 60-pound packs on our back. The athletes lived right on the edge and they used to like to see what the doctors could do. One German doctor accepted the challenge when we were in Chili and he ended up breaking his femur. I did double time that trip.”
But the life of a team doctor, with all of its excitement and inthe-field lessons, isn’t easy. So, both David and Mark, who today have growing families, made the decision to come back to their hometown of Lake Forest and join their father’s practice.
“It was interesting to become colleagues with men I’d known since I was a teenager,” explains David. “That probably made my transition into the group easier than most since there we already had such a good rapport with each other.”
Although both Dr. Ed and Dr. Bruce Hamming have since retired, David and Mark did get to work for several years with them before their careers with IBJI came to an end.
“There was actually a surgery where David, my dad, and I were all in the operating room together,” Mark remembers. “They didn’t really need all of us, but it was a chance for us to scrub in together so we did.”
But more than their father’s surgical techniques, it’s how their father treated patients and co-workers that is the legacy his sons want to continue.
“My dad had this way of making his patients feel like he had all day to talk with them. He really cared,” David says. “Surgeons also have a bad rap for not always treating the hospital staff with the respect they deserve. My dad wouldn’t tolerate that and we won’t either.”
Both brothers now enjoy being team doctors at a number of area high schools, while seeing patients from the community. “It’s pretty neat how this has all come full circle,” adds David. “When I see kids from Deer Path Middle School, I like to tell them how I went there. It’s great to be able to see these kids in the office and then follow their care.”
While the brothers claim they chose their specialties independent of one another—never considering their mother’s ophthalmology path because of their “fear of operating on eyeballs”— they find great comfort practicing together.
“I think both David and I feel so lucky to have the colleagues that we do,” Mark explains. “They all are truly amazing. But to be able to run things by my brother is on a whole different level. Last week, I found the X-ray from when I broke my leg. Without telling him it was mine, I asked David how he would handle this broken leg of a 15-year-old kid. He said he would “cast it’,” Mark says with a laugh. “He gave the right answer. Dad would be proud.”

“Thank you so much for buying Caputo’s and keeping this great staff,” says a regular to Frank Visconti. “Lake Forest needs this place.”
This is a sentiment that Visconti hears regularly at the Lake Forest institution he’s renamed Visconti Cheese & Deli, after the Caputo family decided to step away from its downtown Lake Forest store and focus more on the production side of their business that’s based in Melrose Park.
“I’m so glad that Nat came to me and we were able to strike a deal,” Visconti says of his friend he’s known all his life. “We’ve been talking about this on and off for a couple of years and people kept saying to me, ‘Frank, you have to buy Caputos.’”
As Caputo’s Cheese Market was on the brink of shutting its doors, Frank Visconti—a lifelong friend of the Caputos— agreed to take the helm.An artfully arranged antipasti platter made with Visconti’s meats and cheeses. ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR Frank Visconti
The stars aligned in such a way to make made this all happen. Visconti ran a deli and importing business from a building he owned in west Lake Forest. Late last summer, someone approached him about buying the building and it was too good of a deal to pass up.
“I was just kind of sitting back and relaxing,” says Visconti. “My nephews took over my import business—we have more than 30,000 products in stores around the country—and I was enjoying the break. But then a couple of new opportunities came my way.”
First up, the Altounians who own commercial real estate in the area reached out to Visconti to see if he might be interested in opening a restaurant in the retail strip near CVS like his father had once owned in Highwood called Little Italy.
“It’s in my blood,” he says, “and I couldn’t say no. We’re in the process of building out a 75-seat place with an all-open kitchen— Visconti’s Little Italy Ristorante—that will hopefully open at the end of April.”
While plans for this new eatery were under way, the Caputo family announced they were looking for someone to purchase their
store. “I knew I had to do it, even with us opening the restaurant. Having the restaurant will actually be an asset to the deli.”
Visconti promises that all of the products the Caputos sold will continue to be offered. He just plans to add more.
“We’re going to have more pre-made dinners, sandwiches, and larger salads. We’re going to increase the catering we offer and add a delivery service,” he says.
Deli regulars will also notice that items they once saw occasionally will now be available every day.
“We’re going to have Italian beef, meatball subs, and sausage and pepper sandwiches made fresh daily in the kitchen of our nearby restaurant. We’re also going to add a second register to our counter so that people can get in and out of our store quickly. We’re really wanting to increase our lunch traffic so we want customers to be able to come by and pick something up and not have to wait in a long line for us to ring them up.” And by shuffling around the placement of where the to-go items will be placed, Visconti will have his cases filled with Italian desserts.
Having grown up in Lake Forest and graduated from Lake Forest High School in 1984, Visconti knows how important small businesses are to the vibrancy of our community.
“I’m really looking forward to summer,” he says. “I have a woodburning oven on the way here from Sicily that I can’t wait to set up on our patio outside of the store. I can see it now. A beautiful afternoon, a glass of wine, and the best pizza you’ll ever eat.”
Last spring when Heather Fowler was asking friends how to make sure her son Aidan was ready for his freshman year at Lake Forest High School, she got lots of advice.
“The thing people said to me over and over was that Aidan should do a fall sport,” she says. “My friends thought this was the best way for Aidan to meet a lot of other kids since he was coming from St. Mary’s.”
But Aidan had other ideas.
Even though he was an avid golfer, he was drawn to music. A long-time follower of music disc jockeys on YouTube, Aidan thought that mixing music looked like a lot more fun than making it. So, with some money he received as a gift for his Confirmation last April, he bought his first piece of DJ equipment.
“I’ve always been more of hands-on learner,” says Aidan. “I like being able to play around with all of the cords and knobs to make it work. It wasn’t quite as easy as I thought.”
But Aidan is being modest. For a 14-year-old teenager, he is self-taught on his growing allotment of equipment. “It usually takes me two weeks to really figure out how the pieces work together. But it’s fun for me. It doesn’t feel like work.”
And that part is clear. Aidan is a self-proclaimed “techy” and the machinery of his DJ life is just as exciting to him as entertaining guests.
“The lights are actually way harder to work with than the controller and mixer,” he explains. “I like when the lights to match the music—this is what makes what I do a show. The lights are just as important as the music I play.”
Aidan stays on top of all the new music releases and invests his extra spending money into elements that make his DJ set up more professional. He recently purchased some “scrims” to disguise some of the cording and mechanisms used to hold his machinery.
“We are so proud that Aidan has found something he is so passionate about,” his mother Heather says. “He is thinking about it all of the time. When you ask him a question about being a DJ, you get a very detailed answer. Sometimes when we ask him about school work, not so much.”
“DJ Aidan Fowler,” as he’s known among the locals, is mak-
ing quite a name for himself. He recently played at a grade school dance for 300 in Libertyville, donated his DJ services to the Spirit of 67, and has been tapped for some DJ duties at Lake Bluff’s 4th of July festivities this summer.
When asked if he gets nervous before working a gig, Aidan shakes his head no. “I always try to get to the site a little early and get everything set up,” he explains. “I then do a sound check so I don’t blow out anyone’s ears. Once I get that right, I don’t really worry. I do know that I need to invest in some equipment to get my gear from place to place. I’m not sure what I would do if my dad couldn’t help me.”
Even though Aidan is new to the industry, he has a strategy for how he plays his music to make sure everyone hits the dance floor. “I like to play some older songs that people recognize and put them in a good mood and then I’ll follow it up with a song that’s really popular now,” he says, acknowledging he’s playing a lot of Roddy Rich these days. “It’s hip-hop, but it’s cleaner than most. But it gets everyone going and when I see people out there dancing, I know that I’m doing a good job.”
Although his mom has dreams he might one day grow up to be the architect he once talked about, Aidan pictures himself spinning tunes on a big stage at Coachella, California’s largest music festival. “That would be so cool,” he says, surely picturing that far-off day in his head.

matching people with a service or experience I know is right for them, and I love making people’s lives easier. That all comes together in real estate.”
You could call what Nanini possesses the perfect trifecta: friendly energy, deep knowledge about real estate and the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff communities, and a wealth of connections developed over her years living in the area.
“To live in the area you sell gives you so many connections that someone new to the area is never going to have,” she says. “This is especially appreciated by my buyers coming to the area from the city. I can take an area such as Lake Forest, separate it out, and truly show them why Lake Forest might work for them and their needs.”
The combination of these connections and knowledge and a customer-service oriented business philosophy helps Nanini remove the apprehensions and anxieties buyers and sellers have during their real estate journey.
“I’ve always taken on that ‘friend’ role with my clients,” Nanini says. “I want them to feel they can come to me with any question they might have, no matter what it is.”
One thing Nanini won’t do for clients is push them into decisions they’re not ready to make. She believes in being thoughtful and deliberate and understands the risk of buyers making hasty decisions.
When you contract with Roni Nanini to list your home for sale—or solicit her help to purchase one—her job doesn’t begin there. Once she’s sold your home or helped you find your dream house, her job doesn’t end there, either. You wouldn’t want it to.
Nanini, a broker with @properties in Lake Forest, lives by the motto “Let’s get it done,” and that goes beyond the transactional.
Want to do some upgrades in that new house? She can refer you to the right contractor. Need a plumber or electrician? She’ll open her rolodex and point you to some reliable connections. Painter? Same.
“I love helping people. I always have,” Nanini says. “I love
“I’m what you would call a very educational broker,” she says. “I don’t push people into doing something they might not be comfortable with. I do my best to educate them fully about every decision they need to make throughout the process.”
Nanini was born and raised in Highland Park and is currently raising a family in Lake Forest. She started her professional career working with people with disabilities before joining the real estate business. It turned out to be the right fit.
“I have an endless amount of energy and an upbeat attitude about life in general,” Nanini says. “I guess that’s what happens when you love what you do for a living, and I love this area I get to call home.”

One of the most frequent requests that I get is for a “Tummy Tuck”. Many patients find that despite diet and exercise they cannot achieve the shaped, toned, flat abdomen they desire. In assessing a patient for a “Tummy Tuck” multiple factors are taken into account.
1. What is the status of the overlying skin and the degree of laxity? Is the laxity confined to the lower or upper part of the abdomen or both?
2. What is the status of the underlying muscles? Do they meet in the midline or are they separated from pregnancies or intra-abdominal fat.
3. What is the distribution of excess fat? Is it diffuse or localized in the lower upper abdomen? Does it extend to the flanks?
Depending upon the above assessment a customized operation can be performed to address these concerns. There are multiple procedures or techniques that can be employed.
The procedures vary from non-invasive to full abdominoplasty or some combination.
Methods include:
1. Non-invasive CoolSculpt, CoolTone.
2. Minimally invasive BodyTite or Renuvion for skin tightening.
3. Vaser liposuction for fat reduction.
4. Modified abdominoplasty for lower abdomen.
5. Full abdominoplasty combining liposuction, repositioning umbilicus, skin tightening, and underlying muscle repair.
These above procedures can often be combined to give you a customized operation to achieve the results you desire.

She just completed an internship with the Ragdale Foundation’s artist residency program, and in January she had her first solo student gallery show, “The Avant Off-Guard.” Her eclectic interests and pursuits are reflected in her musical tastes: tuning into her time slot can take you on a sonic journey from classic Prince tunes to the latest track by FKA twigs. “I tend to be very intuitive in terms of the music I choose to air,” she says. “Guiding music is a careful art, and I feel humbled, honored, and deeply grateful to get to contribute to the legacy of WMXM.” Here are a few of the polymath’s favorite lasts:
EDITED BY DEBBIE LEE / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKOTHE LAST GREAT ALBUM YOU DOWNLOADED? An album that recently resonated with me was Natural Affair by The Growlers. I have been enthusiastically listening to their work for the past few years, feeling charmed by the grit and sincerity of their music. This album preserves the ruggedness and spirit of their earlier music, but with a further clarified sound, energized and vamped instrumentals, and a bit of polish. It’s most definitely an album to let lull you on loop.
THE LAST MIND-BLOWING LIVE PERFORMANCE YOU ATTENDED? Without a doubt the Anderson .Paak concert in June 2019 at Huntington Bank Pavilion. This show was legendary. The concert began in the early evening on a heavenly day. I remember that my wig matched the pink and lilac in the sky. The venue looks out over the lake, and from the opposite direction, the sun was descending beneath the cityscape. That pastel palette from the sunset seemed to illuminate the stage, and Anderson .Paak and The Free Nationals swooned show-goers with a dreamy array of songs. It was exhilarating and all so gorgeous, I danced the night away. It was an otherworldly experience.
THE LAST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE GAVE YOU BEFORE YOU LEFT THE NEST? During my junior year of high school, I regularly looked after my chemistry teacher’s two golden retrievers. One night, my teacher and I were chatting about my future, and I said I didn’t feel strongly enough about college to go. She challenged that statement and suggested that it might be an important experience. But I’m still of the opinion that the decision to pursue college should come from a place of personal certainty within oneself rather than external influences.
THE LAST GREAT SPOT YOU ATE AT IN TOWN? I’ve been vegan for almost four years, but I would encourage anyone (even meat eaters) to try out the vegan food at Fresh Cafe in Mundelein. I first made my way to this haven with
a close friend, and we’ve been planning our return ever since. Without a doubt, this is the place for unforgettable comfort food like the mac-n-“cheez”—one bite and you will realize that it is worth the bit of travel.
THE LAST VACATION YOU TOOK? I visited a close friend in Memphis during the earlier and colder part of last spring. Traveling always feels so magical to me, especially since it involves leaving the bitter bite of a Milwaukee winter for respite in warmer places. Visiting was a very healing experience— vibrant and so adventurous. At any given moment, there are usually a few songs I am really into; around the time of this trip, I was just beginning to sink into the music of Unknown Mortal Orchestra. So my memory of these events—like long walks on warm Memphis pavement with viney green growth all around, and the windstorm that nearly blew us through the streets—are all entangled in this dreamy backdrop music. “How Many Zeros” and “Bicycle” by UMO have especially lensed these memories for me.
