Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisors list is comprised of approximately 2,200 financial advisors. It was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on inperson and telephone due diligence meetings to measure factors such as quality of practice, industry experience, compliance record, assets under management (which vary from state to state) and revenue. Neither UBS Financial Services Inc. nor its employees pay a fee in exchange for these ratings. Past performance is not an indication of future results. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. In providing wealth management services to clients, we offer both investment advisory and brokerage services, which are separate and distinct and differ in material ways. PUBLISHER’S NOTE
We are fortunate to have two incredible young women from Hinsdale on our March cover. Dominique and Gabrielle Roberts joined us all the way from Hong Kong and Los Angeles, respectively, to discuss two female-forward projects that are close to their hearts. One is Code Your Chances, the nonprofit organization they founded to help stoke young girls' interests in the field of computer science; the other is their film production company, Nikki & Ella Productions, which focuses on female-centric stories.
Over in Downers Grove, Peter and Kate Michael dine at the new Osteria by Fabio Viviani. The Italian chef once charmed viewers on Bravo's Top Chef, and now locals can find out if his fare lives up to the hype seen on screen.

In our Journeys section, Dustin O'Regan takes a trip to
Spain and marvels over the cultural offerings in Madrid and Marbella. (However, one look at her accommodations and you'd wonder how she ever found a reason to leave her hotel rooms.)

This month's Giving Back gets the scoop on this year's Tablescapes charity benefit at The Westin Chicago Lombard. The annual event is now 22 years old and a signature of the Hinsdale Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. Anyone looking to give to a good cause should consider getting tickets today.

Looking to support local businesses? Our latest publisher's profiles features Megan McCleary of Berkshire Hathaway Koenig Rubloff and Joanne Sebby of Two Men and a Truck. As we approach spring and the housing market picks up, perhaps you'll find you need to rely on either (or both) for a potential move.

Enjoy the pictures, and good reading.

Talk of the Town
Talk of the Town
Bright Lights, Second City
To those native Chicagoans who dismiss the Riverwalk as a tourist destination, or take their daily background scenery for granted, take heed. Starting April 1, Art on theMART is certain to capture your attention. The largest digital art projection in the world is back, casting its brilliant displays across theMART’s 2-and-a-half acre façade (for reference, that’s roughly the size of two football fields). The free public art project gives everyday pedestrians access to the work of celebrated contemporary and classic artists. This year includes a collaboration with Arts of Life (a nonprofit community for artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities), along with iconic artworks by Claude Monet in alignment with the Art Institute of Chicago’s exhibition Monet and Chicago. Projections are visible from Wacker Drive and along the Chicago Riverwalk and are scheduled to run seven nights a week, one hour per night, beginning at 8:30 p.m. For more information, visit artonthemart.com.

That's right. Carole King said it best. Using Whole Body Vib ration from the PowerPlate as their superpower of choice, Plate28 delivers the benefits of a 1-2 hour gym workout in only 28 minutes. The way it works is the vibrations travel through your body and your muscles start creating tiny contractions to stabilize themselves. This means your body is working harder on the PowerPlate than it would be on the ground. The benefits of this are countless: a more effic ient workout, increase in stability & strength, increased metabolism, and even hormonal benefits. Training on the PowerPlate for 28 minutes has shown to increase happy brain chemicals like serotonin and decrease our stress hormone, cortisol.

Available at Kaehler Luggage and Travel Goods, 28 East 1st Street in Hinsdale, worldtraveler.com.

Relax and Say “Maaah”
You’ve seen it on social media and in lifestyle blogs; maybe you’ve even traveled to a farm outside of town to try it. Now it’s being herded into Hinsdale. On Tuesday, March 10 at 5:30 p.m., Strong Self(ie)—a subscription box company whose mission is to empower girls—will host a mother-daughter Goat Yoga session at The Community House. The 30-minute class will lead participants through a series of movements while baby goats roam the grounds. Be prepared— some may even climb on top of you while you’re mid-pose. Admission includes snacks, photo ops, and playtime with the animals. For more information, visit strongselfie.com.

JENNA LEE FOWLER
has always had an eye for style. After graduating from Bradley University with a degree in public relations, she operated Fashion Heist, a mobile apparel showroom, and jlee silver, a contemporary clothing label that made the pages of Lucky, Glamour, and Marie Claire magazines. In 2015, she moved from Chicago to Western Springs and launched Vagabond Botanical. The bespoke plant studio offers inspired arrangements (outdoor planters, succulents, dried flowers), botanical installations, house plants, and workshops throughout the Western Suburbs. When she’s not immersed in her work, the mother of two boys (Jack, 8 and Donnie, 4) volunteers at Forest Hills Elementary and with Home2Home Project.

Mantra? Head up and heart open. Best grooming tip? or as I loving refer to them, “bang-tox.” They’re great at hiding a missed eyebrow appointment and delaying botox. Plus are a fun way to easily change up your look. Danni Sullivan at Solo Salon in the city is the Bang Whisperer. Guilty pleasure? Spa Days. I love trying different spas. My favorite is Aire Ancient Baths in Chicago. Perfect spot to spend a few hours on a dreary winter day. Favorite foods? Anything that accompanies a margarita. Music you love? What I listen to totally depends on my mood. My Pandora play list ranges from Fleetwood Mac to Tupac. Best advice ever given to you? This too shall pass. John Mayer’s Room for Squares, with the windows and sunroof open. Place to eat? J. Alexander’s. I know it sounds strange for a place known for their beef, but their veggie burger is delicious. Shop? A mix of Target and online shopping. Dressedinlala.com and hautelook. com are my go-tos to funk up my Target finds. Best thing about country? Friends and family. An incredible sense of community. Worst thing about country? The lack of cool things to do on a night out that doesn’t involve going to the city. The perfect day is? A lazy morning with my boys, late breakfast at Hash Stacks, and a walk through Bemis Woods. Things end with us snuggled up on the couch watching a movie and eating pizza from Salerno’s.

Best advice you’ve given? “How hard can it be?” This is what I told my business partner in my apparel company when our investor told us to make the clothing our boutiques were wanting to sell. We had a successful apparel showroom selling other designer’s clothing, and now we were getting the chance to design our own apparel collection (my childhood dream). My reckless optimism launched my creative entrepreneurial career. Earliest memory? Roller skating at Fleetwood Roller Rink with my mom. When you wake up, you? Snuggle with my boys and drink coffee. The place is quaint and filled with interesting characters. A stroll through Ikram for some creative inspiration followed by a drink and an appetizer at Le Colonial. Although I like the new location, there is nothing like the sexy upstairs lounge at their original location on Rush Street. PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING
WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN
Taking care of seniors involve various preventive measures. One important aspect we consider is male prostate cancer screening.
Although often asymptomatic prostate cancer symptoms include frequent urination, weak or interrupted urine flow, or the need to strain to empty the bladder, the urge to urinate frequently at night, blood in the urine, blood in the seminal fluid, and new onset of erectile dysfunction.
African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer have higher rates of prostate cancer and related mortality from the disease. For male patients aged 55 to 69, the PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test has been routinely ordered, however
there is controversy with testing results and overdiagnosis. Overdiagnosis involves the diagnosis of asymptomatic cancer that never would have resulted in symptoms or death.

The American Cancer Society has the below recommendations for screening.
• Age 50 for men who are at average risk of prostate cancer and are expected to live at least 10 more years
• Age 45 for men at high risk of developing prostate cancer. This includes African Americans and men who have a firstdegree relative (father or brother) diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age (younger than age 65)
• Age 40 for men at even higher risk (those with more than one first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age)
The digital rectal exam (DRE) may also be performed as a part of screening. The repeat testing frequency or interval is based on various medical factors and should be discussed with your physician. One consensus is not to administer a PSA blood test after the age of 70, if the life expectancy is less than 10 years. This is due to the slow growing nature of prostate cancer that would not affect a man with a less than 10-year life expectancy.
Screening and preventive medical care is paramount in my practice, especially with life expectancy increasing and seniors hoping for a better quality of life, as related to their health and fitness. Male patients aged 55 to 69 and higher risk patients, should work together with their primary care physician on a screening scheduled based on risk factors, most recent guidelines, and any potential symptoms.

GIVING BACK

AN ILLUMINATING AFFAIR
Tablescapes casts light on the patients at Chicago’s Angel Harvey Family Health Center.
WORDS BY DEBBIE LEE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAROn your mark, get set… set!
For the 22nd consecutive year, the ladies of the Hinsdale Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago (IWS) will follow these directives for Tablescapes—a signature fundraiser that invites members to lend their imaginations to artfully arranged dining tables.

The benefit, to be held at noon on March 22 at The Westin Chicago Lombard, will feature boutique shopping, a silent auction, and—of course—an array of namesake tablescapes. Raffle tickets will be available for guests to win everything displayed on their favorite table.
The theme for 2020 is “Illuminate!” Auxiliary members, who are divided into groups and led by designated table captains, have interpreted this title in various creative ways: There is a “Bright Lights, Big City” table inspired by a “downtown chic” aesthetic; a “City Lights” design for more romantic vibes; and a casual campfire set-up conceived by Junior Board members.
But the concept goes much deeper than the twinkling displays.
“One of the reasons we chose ‘lluminate’ this year was that not only will it be striking and dramatic to see the ballroom decorated this way,” says IWS Hinsdale president Laura Alter. “But the second and more important meaning is that we are providing light to people’s lives.”
Kimberly O’Gorman, who is co-chairing the event for her second year with fellow member (and first-time chair) Tracy Fussaro, echoes Alter’s sentiments. “It’s about bringing a ray of hope to these families,” she says.
The IWS was established in 1911 by a group of volunteer nurses, physicians, and women to provide fresh, safe milk to infants. The primary goal was to lower infant mortality rates. Today, in its current form, the Angel Harvey Family Health Center of the IWS of Chicago is a full-service community health center providing medical care, dental care, optometry, and behavioral health services to both children and adults.
“It’s all tied together,” explains Alter. “Maybe dad loses his job and mom is trying to hold it together, but it’s difficult to make ends meet. As a result, their children might have nutritional or dental issues because they don’t have the resources to get the care they need. We are trying to treat the whole family and make it a onestop health shop.”
In October, members of the Hinsdale Auxiliary (the oldest of 13 chapters) made a visit to the center to observe the fruits of their
labor. With $90,000 raised from last year’s events, plus donations earned by the Hinsdale Junior Women’s Club, the Angel Harvey Family Health Center was able to purchase a new state-of-the-art dental X-ray machine.
“Going down to the center, I can’t go into it without getting teary eyed,” says O’Gorman. “How much they do and provide is so touching.” She says that the goal of this year’s benefit is to help fund a new teen anxiety counseling program.
“There’s a lot of anxiety that comes with being impoverished,” she says. “Social media causing low self-esteem can be a problem. But these teens also face uncertainty: Where will their next meal come from? Can they keep their lights on? This program will help those who are the most underserved deal with those issues.”
Tablescapes will provide plenty of incentives for attendees to help the IWS reach their 2020 goals. WGN-TV reporter Ben Bradley will serve as emcee for a second year (“If anyone can keep 500 ladies quiet after they’ve had a few drinks, it’s him,” quips Alter). And impressive auction items and raffles prizes will include a trip to Maui and a Florida golf vacation.
The program will also include special guests—members of the IWS who will discuss how the Auxiliaries’ support has impacted their lives for the better.
“It’s so rewarding in that we have this small group here in Hinsdale—between 30 and 50 ladies—and everybody is hands on,” says Alter. “What we do makes a direct impact on people’s lives. Every dollar helps them. It’s not going to an advertising campaign, or we don’t just use ten cents out of the dollar. It’s really important that we do this, because quite honestly, the IWS wouldn’t be able to operate or stay open without our help—they rely on us to help pay for some of the programs they are providing.”
She promises guests an event that will be “quite meaningful, but also a ton of fun.”

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMESFor sisters and Hinsdale natives Dominique and Gabrielle Roberts, the future is female. The duo cofounded Code Your Chances, a nonprofit organization that teaches young girls the importance of computer science and the opportunities they can create for themselves by learning to code, along with their namesake film studio Nikka & Ella Productions, where they created a space to tell meaningful and primarily female-centric stories.
“I think the film industry has a long way to go toward gender and racial equality,” says Gabrielle. “As a female in two heavily male-dominated fields, I think it is so important to make spaces for, and to encourage, other women at every opportunity.”
For Gabrielle, it’s personal. As a woman in the field of computer science, she says she often faced gender discrimination in the form of microaggressions that eventually made her feel as if she did not belong. “This happens every day to girls who express interest in STEM fields,” says Gabrielle.
Dominique can sympathize. “As a woman in law, I understand the challenges of pursuing a career where most senior positions are filled by men,” she says. “But at least law is a career path many little girls are conceptually aware of. There are a lot of bright girls across the country who have never even considered a computer science-based career. We’re trying to change that.”
To do so, they host fun and interactive workshops—with partners like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America—for young girls in which they introduce them to the basics of computer science and its importance in the world.
In their pursuit for gender equality, Dominique and Gabrielle Roberts are double trouble.

“I’ve been shocked at how much even just a conversation about my computer science experience has affected the girls we work with,” says Gabrielle. “Their eyes light up like they can imagine doing it, too. In our Code Your Chances workshops, we take time to highlight achievements made by females in computer science, so girls have visible role models.”
Using crafts, movies, songs, apps and games, they help them build confidence in a field that’s often described as intimidating. To further promote education, Code Your Chances also donates used laptops to educational centers and community partners.
“Nearly everything is influenced by computer science,” says Dominique. “Our lives are run by code. Think: every app we use to connect with others, every digital platform we use to source our news, every algorithm banks use to determine loan approvals, and every algorithm employers use for hiring. If women are not contributing to these systems and products, the gender biases we spend so much energy discussing will be embedded in the fabric of our future. It may not be intentional, but it is inevitable.”
All that said, both Nikki & Ella Productions and Code Your Chances remain side passion projects for the two sisters. Gabrielle, a recent graduate of the University of Southern
California, was just accepted as a Schwarzman Scholar, a prestigious award granted to promising future leaders in politics, business, and science. During the year-long master’s program in China, she’ll study the Chinese film industry and Chinese audiences.
“In the next two years, the Chinese film industry will become the largest in the world in terms of box-office sales,” says Gabrielle. “We need to include these huge global markets, like China, in the films we create. Film is an invaluable medium for cultural exchange and connection. The more people your film can reach and affect, the stronger its impact will be.”
Simultaneously, she’ll continue her work in the cutting-edge field of virtual production, a subset of visual effects that combines live-action techniques with VFX. Instead of filming in front of a green screen and then waiting for an artist to finish the composite to see the preliminary result, virtual production allows filmmakers to see the visual effects in real-time, as seen in the most recent version of The Lion King and in many of the new Marvel films.
Dominique, a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and of Oxford University, works for Sidley Austin in London but is currently on temporary assignment in the Hong Kong office for six months as part of the international arbitration team. As a creative outlet, she’s also the creator, producer and editor of the historical podcast “Wonder Women,” which helps address gender imbalances in historiography and focuses on important stories that have been left out of traditional curriculums, like the first female state senator and the fourth wife of a Mormon polygamist.
“While studying for my history masters at Oxford, I noticed all of our assigned reading in the first term was written by men,” explains Dominique. “This was not due to any bias from the faculty, but rather was a reflection of the fact that most historians until the second half of the twentieth century were men. The natural result of this is that our school history curriculums include very little mention of inspiring and important women.”
Fittingly, Dominique’s dissertation at Oxford was on the role of women in the creation of the film industry. “What most people don’t realize,” she says, “is that Hollywood was largely created by women.”
Nowhere is that more evident than with these two sisters who are singlehandedly changing the industry in which they work. Between both Dominique and Gabrielle, they’ve produced numerous critically acclaimed films, like Gabrielle’s undergraduate and postgraduate theses “Summon a Fiend” and “Dig” and Dominique’s “Emerald City,” a female-centric story about the transition from university to post-college adulthood.
Through it all, they rely on each other for inspiration.
“I’m grateful to be able to work with my sister,” says Gabrielle. “She is my most trusted ally in any creative project I dive into and we are a cohesive team. We are attuned to each other’s strengths and weaknesses and understand how to best support one another.”
When home in Hinsdale, they prefer to catch up over breakfast with their parents. “We are pretty loyal to Egg Harbor and Citrus Diner, where you can find us nearly every day when we are home,” says Dominique. “We go to Citrus so often that we are friends with the entire staff, including our favorite chef, José.”
It’s only a matter of time until the paparazzi catches on.

“WE ARE ATTUNED TO EACH OTHER’S STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES AND UNDERSTAND HOW TO BEST SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER.”

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

Say what you will about Fabio Viviani—celebrity chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, and pin-up dreamboat for an incredible number of middleaged amateur cooks—the man has no interest in being “dull.” Ever since he chopped his way onto season five of Bravo’s Top Chef in 2008—rockin’ that rakish grin, his accent as potent as a bottle of Barolo— he’s refused to be boring.
He still rhapsodizes about food—it’s almost like listening to an aria—as if he’s holding out hope for a second career at the Lyric. He continues to fly around the country, making pit stops at his various restaurants, to show adoring fans how to properly fold gnocchi and make meatballs the Viviani way. And then there’s his unorthodox business strategy, which has established restaurants in places—Nichols City, Oklahoma; Auburn Hills, Michigan—
that other chefs would have trouble finding on a map.
So it should come as no surprise that his newest local venture, Osteria by Fabio Viviani, looks like no other hotel dining room in the area.

If I didn’t know better I’d say it was designed for the Bellagio in Las Vegas rather than a Doubletree Suites in Downers Grove. Inside, frilly green hedgerows direct guests through giant sliding doors into a dimly lit dining room illuminated by flickering lanterns and shadow-casting pendant lights. There are giant mirrors. Touches of aqua on the walls. And more diagonally cut wood than you’ll see in an hour’s worth of HGTV. Let’s call it contemporary rococo, thanks to a sharp accent wall covered with a floral wallpaper last seen in the days of Fragonard and Boucher.
Like Vegas itself, there’s nothing subliminal about it. If Viviani would’ve

added a neon light, it would blink one word and one word only: Indulge.
Look no further than his bread bowl, which is served with a warmed, slightly liquefied garlic cloves steeped in a rosemary olive oil flecked with grana padana. It’s a nightmare for Keto advocates but a blessing for the rest of us.
There are certainly less robust options, including chopped salads, a plate of Mediterranean field greens, and burrata. But I think Fabio does his best work on the bold stuff. His octopus app, which is braised for 90 minutes until it’s as soft a mound of al dente fettuccine, is moated by a briny-spicy celery salad made with cerignola olives and peppers. In other restaurants that would be enough, but here a second level of brine and heat is applied via a two-fisted drizzling of romesco and an extra lemony beurre blanc sauce.
Is it French? Is it Italian? Is it Spanish? Who’s to say other than it’s way too rich to ever slip onto a tiny crostini. As far as Fabio and his skilled (and equally personable) executive chef, Daniel Molina, are concerned, Midwestern appetites demand Wisconsin-
Cocktails

The names are cute—think Chamomile Penicillin made with ginger chamomile and scotch or a Maria Margarita spiced with Serrano peppers— but it’s not all kitsch, there’s plenty of intriguing flavors and smart liquors being used behind at the bar.

sized portions.
I’ve been to enough red sauce ItalianAmerican restaurants to put Tommy Lasorda to shame, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single flattened piece of pork that’s as large as Osteria’s panko-crusted Milanese. The breaded cutlet is larger than the giant salad bowl we use at home, which may explain why the pork is topped by a huge acidic and spicy arugula salad made with pickled onions and pepperoncini. It can easily be split three ways, making it an absolute steal at 24 bucks.

Yes, Fabio’s famous meatballs are also gargantuan. Think minor league Rawlings baseballs. They’re kept moist with Wagyu beef, ricotta cheese, and soaked breadcrumbs, then formed via a secret process I’m not at liberty to disclose. I can only say it involves throwing said meatballs into your hands a certain number of times, like a baseball player warming up with a ball and a glove. And yes, they’re a must-order.
Osteria’s handmade pastas are equally large—try the short rib sugo fettuccine while the temperatures are still crisp. Also consider chef Molina’s fork-tender short ribs, which are lacquered in a full-bodied red wine braise and topped with a green Mohawk of gremolata, whose acidity slices through the richness with unusual grace. Top it off with a slice of limencello cake—an Italian twist on a Southern lemon ice box cake—and you’ll feel like you hit a different but altogether delicious jackpot, that just happened to be much closer to home.
Osteria Sour: The star here is the Meletti amaro with its distinctive bouquet of caramel-covered lavender. Whisk in some amaretto, bourbon, lemon juice, and bitters, topped with egg white, and you have an amber-colored, honey-flavored jewel of a cocktail.
Sophia Loren: Sometimes my weakness for cocktails named after classic movie stars gets me in trouble—90 percent of cocktails named after Sinatra, for instance, are bad—but not here. This one is light, floral, and effervescent: a vodka-spiked strawberry lemonade with a hint of elderflower topped off with a bubbly canopy of prosecco.

A SPANISH EXPLORATION
Venture on a journey from Spain’s historic capital city to a beachy Andalusian gem.

Spain is like its native tapas cuisine—offering a little something for everyone. Boasting diverse terrain, the country is home to ski resorts, beach towns, picturesque villages, and cultural meccas. We chose Madrid and Marbella to experience both a bustling cultural center and a coastal hub.

MADRID
Madrid is full of artistic attractions, which mirror the different styles that have left their imprint on the city over the centuries. Beautiful architecture, winding narrow streets, and cultural treasures make it easy to fall in love with this romantic city, and the ability to easily navigate its clean, safe streets is real plus for visitors.
Stay at the five-star luxury NH Collection Palacio de Tepa, which is located in the heart of the Madrid’s “Las Letras” district. Housed in a 19th-century palace designed by Juan de Villanueva, the architect of the Prado Museum and Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s main square, the hotel combines a rich history with modern luxury. From the meticulously preserved brick façade to the 16thcentury artifacts displayed in the lobby, the hotel transports you
back in time. Open the door to your room, however, and you step into the modern era where exposed beams, vaulted ceilings, contemporary furnishings, hi-tech access, and gorgeous views abound. Suites offer a loft sleeping area that my daughter adored. The hotel is a five-minute walk to Plaza Mayor, a 15-minute walk to the Royal Palace, and a 15-minute walk to the Golden Triangle of Art—the nexus of the Prado, Reina Sofia, and ThyssenBornemisza museums.

If you have only one or two days in Madrid, start with the museums. The Prado Museum should top your list, as its vast collection lands it a spot as one of the world’s top museums. I was giddy with anticipation as we approached this treasure trove of artwork. Like a kid in a candy store, I hungrily progressed from

Sala to Sala to view the work of masters including Velazquez, Goya, Caravaggio, and Reubens. Next, visit Reina Sofía Museum, home to Picasso’s “Guernica.” To complete the trifecta, visit the ThyssenBornemisza Museum where you will find a collection of international paintings that perfectly complement the Prado’s old masters and Reina Sofia’s modern and contemporary works.
Fully sated with art, take a rest near the Crystal Palace in the Parque de El Retiro and contemplate your visual feast. Once rested, set off to visit the balconylined Plaza Mayor to sit among the locals for a coffee and grab a bite to eat at the glass-encased San Mercado market. Just a stone’s throw away is the must-see Royal Palace. Take on the persona of a monarch as you wander through the imperial hallways commissioned in 1738 by the first Bourbon King of Spain, Philip V, and completed nearly thirty years later. The Royal Palace continues as the official residence of their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain.
Next door is the mammoth Cathedral la Almudena and just to the north is the Temple of Debod—an Egyptian temple dating back to the second century that is exquisitely lit in the evening hours. Use all five senses to absorb what the city offers—from the laughter spilling out of open cafe doors to the lively, cartoonish acts in the squares—as you stroll through Madrid’s enchanting streets and squares before returning to the hotel for dinner.
MARBELLA
Arrive via bullet train (two and a half hours from Madrid) to Malaga, where a one-hour scenic trek west delivers you to the gem of Andalusia—Marbella and its Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Benahavis Marbella Resort. Entering the glass doors of the blushcolored, Tuscan-style hotel, you find yourself in a lavish lobby and glass-ceilinged courtyard. Stunning grounds, glorious restaurants, three remarkable golf courses, a garden pool, and a heavenly spa complement the hotel’s remarkable art collection—a passion of the husband and wife team who built the Villa in 2003. Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha enjoyed all of the Villa’s offerings on their visit in 2010 staying in a villa now dubbed the “Obama Villa,” which is the only whitewashed residence (aka “White House”) on the property.

If the arrival weren’t intoxicating enough, we were whisked off to a cocktail tasting with the world-renowned Diego Cabreratrained team at Eddy’s Bar. The master mixologist is considered one of the best in his field and has carefully curated Eddy’s cocktail menu. Adolfo, a Cabrera protégé, conjured up heavenly creations. The Paloma, my favorite, is a divine concoction of tequila blanco, lime juice, grapefruit, and a whisper of sugar. Now that you are well-versed in cocktail crafting, head just outside to 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant for dinner. You’ll sample a fusion of East meets West in several innovative dishes—all combining the freshest Spanish produce with classic Japanese presentation. I recommend the spicy tuna tartar with wakame seaweed in a kimchi sauce to start.
At evening’s end, on your immense bed you’ll find a thoughtfully-placed “pillow menu” offering a selection of six types of pillows. I chose the Grace Kelly pillow and slept a princess’ sleep.
Start your morning on La Loggia’s sunny terrace. Sitting beneath swaths of fabric and crystal chandeliers, you will enjoy an enormous buffet bursting with beautiful fruit, fresh juices, local cheeses, sliced local meats (including Iberian ham—a local delicacy), and smoked salmon—while you toast the gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea with glasses of bubbly.
If you have time, take a day trip to visit Ronda—one of the oldest towns in Spain. The one-hour drive takes you along cliffhugging “roads” offering views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the African coast. Upon arrival, winding, narrow streets deliver you into the darling city center where whitewashed houses and orange trees adorn the squares. Be sure to see Ronda’s most dramatic element—El Tajo—a deep rocky chasm that splits the town in two. Follow in the path of the Romans, as you cross from one side to the other along an ancient bridge.
Tour the Bullring Plaza de Toros where bullfighting started in the 18th century and drew famous Europhiles like Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. Welles cherished the city so much that his ashes were scattered here.
Be sure to stop for a tour at LA ORGANIC, known for its olive oil—internationally referred to as liquid gold. Taste various oils in their modern and pristine tasting room. Founded just over a decade ago, the company has become an “organic beauty pioneer,” promoting the belief that you are what you eat and that the nutrition of food is a result of the soil it came from. Art dots the landscape as LA ORGANIC’s design was developed by French designer, Philippe Starck, one of the world’s most well-known product designers.
After a day of sightseeing, visit the Villa’s spa (one of Europe’s

largest) boasting exceptional facilities including a thermal circuit and numerous treatment rooms. It awaits hidden behind the gardens and the outdoor swimming pool. I highly recommend a “water journey” followed by the signature Anantara massage.
For sunbathing, it will be difficult to decide between the Villa’s pool and its Beach Club. The pool is fringed by gardens of palms and pines and lotus ponds fed by turquoise-tiled canals and elaborate fountains. The Beach Club, a short shuttle ride from the Villa, is located where the sandy palm-lined beach meets the aqua Mediterranean Sea.
At the Beach Club we enjoyed a four-course meal including a sea bass dish prepared tableside. The fish arrived encased in salt and was then set aflame. The chef deboned the fish, adding potatoes and roasted vegetables to complete the exquisite palatepleasing main course.
One evening, be sure to enjoy dinner at La Loggia. In the formal yet cozy dining room you’ll dine on artistically presented seafood and meat dishes surrounded by trump l’oeil garden scenes with a view of vine-covered pergolas.
Every great trip must come to an end. However, Spain leaves visitors with a desire to return again and again. Perhaps to visit another part of the country’s diverse terrain or simply to return to Madrid and Marbella to recreate treasured memories.
Hasta pronto mi amiga.

HINSDALE IN HER HEART
Megan McCleary’s deep roots and connections in the Hinsdale community provide the foundation for a successful real estate career.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARMegan McCleary used to explain the World Wide Web and email addresses to sales people. Now she’s a top real estate broker in Hinsdale. The path from then to now is paved with experiences—and a little serendipity—that fuel her professional passion.

McCleary will tell you that much of real estate is about marketing oneself as an agent, and her background in advertising sales and sales management—particularly digital advertising—help shape her approach to working with clients to market and sell their homes.
“I understand what marketing is, what the value is,” she says. “I
know that consistency in advertising is critical. I’ve had to write sales training programs and various marketing tools.”
McCleary relocated to Hinsdale from Chicago 17 years ago to raise her family, and in so doing developed strong ties to the community, serving on PTO and other nonprofit boards and committees, and volunteering in other ways.
“I became very entrenched in the community and really enjoyed doing board work,” she says. “All of those things I did as a mother prepared me for my next chapter.”
Her experiences have led McCleary to take a thoughtful and meticulous approach to helping clients buy and sell homes. While
the companies she worked for during her advertising career had systems in place to maximize sales and profits, McCleary has developed a system of her own.

“I have a very systematic approach when I have a listing, very hands on, very client centered,” she says. “I’m very hyper-focused on a tight geographical area. I can’t provide the level of service that I do if I’m all over the place. It just doesn’t work.”
Her geographical area includes homes that feed into Hinsdale Central High School: a big chunk of Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills, and parts of Burr Ridge and Oak Brook. Having an unparalleled knowledge of these communities and neighborhoods provides her a distinct advantage in advising clients how to get ready to put their houses on the market.
“The first thing I do when I get a listing agreement is set up a staging preview, walk through the house room-to-room inside and out, and outline in a very concise and organized fashion what we think the homeowner should do to get the house in saleable condition,” McCleary says. “You get one chance to make a first impression and you need the very best presentation of the property from the get go.”
McCleary and her team maintain this tight focus throughout the sales process. Each week she meets with her team and reviews every property to talk about what might be missing or what’s working.
“We’re in a market currently where houses really need attention and proper focus,” she says. “You need someone who is experienced and understands the community and how to get the best outcome.”
Sometimes, McCleary says, patience is key. She occasionally works with buyers on and off for three or four years until they find the property that’s just right for them. It’s about patience and listening and understanding what clients need.

“I absolutely love my job. For better or worse, a house is an emotional buy or sell,” McCleary says. “I really am respectful of that and understand the emotional aspect of my job.”

STRESS RELIEF
Two Men and a Truck, with locations in Downers Grove and Plainfield, offers an anxiety-free moving experience.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARSixteen years ago, as a longtime real estate agent in Naperville, Joanne Sebby recognized an opportunity to build a family business. Clients were regularly asking her for a referral for a reliable moving service and she couldn’t think of one. So she created her own.

Today, Sebby’s Two Men and a Truck franchise runs 20 trucks and has more than 50 employees serving Chicago’s Western Suburbs, including Hinsdale.
Key to the success of the family-run business—Sebby’s three adult children are all involved in management—is hiring the right people who interact with sometimes nervous clients on a day-today basis.
“All of our employees are permanent and we conduct background checks and drug tests,” Sebby says. “We’re very careful about the people we hire and we like to keep them for a long time. We can teach you how to be a mover, but we like to hire employees with good customer service skills who are people persons.”
Sebby cites as an example a customer who commented that she expected to be really stressed out the day of her move but ended up having a great day, in part due to the movers’ keen sense of humor.
In addition to providing moving services for anyone moving locally or within the state of Illinois, Two Men and a Truck works with realtors and interior designers who need to move and store furniture for staging and remodeling houses, and provides packing and unpacking services. The company maintains good relationships with local storage facilities.
Lansing-based Two Men and a Truck has more than 380 franchises in America and internationally. In addition to
providing marketing and other support, the company encourages franchisees to get involved in their local communities. Sebby’s franchise has done just that.
As part of its Movers for Moms effort, each May her employees collect donated items and deliver them to the Family Shelter Resale Shop in Westmont, which supports Family Shelter Service, a social service organization based in Wheaton.
In the fall, her franchise operates Movers for Mutts, which collects pet supplies donated at libraries, Petland stores, and other locations and delivers them to the Hinsdale Humane Society. It also supports Project C.U.R.E., an organizations that collects used hospital equipment from hospitals in the U. S. for distribution to needy hospitals around the globe.
All of these outreach efforts, along with its membership in the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce, give Two Men and a Truck the type of tight connections in Hinsdale and the surrounding area that can only happen with strong community investment. As one of the first franchises in Illinois, it maintains a referral rate of 97 percent and constantly receives superior ratings from customers.
Two Men and a Truck’s pricing is competitive with other moving services while offering customers the comfort of knowing they’re working with a local, family-owned business that provides quality service in a friendly, professional manner. With highend homes a specialty, they look forward to expertly serving the Hinsdale community.
“We are an excellent value for the services we provide,” Sebby says.

ONE LAST THING
LESLIE GODDARD is a historian, actor, lecturer, and author who has been portraying famous women in history for more than fifteen years. Her solo performances have been seen by audiences in 16 states, and she has presented at museums, public libraries, community and professional organizations, college and universities, and Chautuaqua festivals. Her repertoire of historical characters includes Queen Elizabeth II, Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rachel Carson, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Louisa May Alcott. A graduate of Hinsdale Central High School, she holds a master’s degree in theater as well as Ph.D. in interdisciplinary history studies from Northwestern University, and has written two books on Chicago history. Here, the woman of many talents shares a few of her favorite lasts:
EDITED BY DEBBIE LEE ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
LAST GREAT READ? Bad Blood by John Carreyrou. Carreyrou broke open the story that Elizabeth Holmes’ blood testing company, Theranos, was a fraud. To me, reality is always more fascinating than fiction, and this is a real-life story that unfolds like a crime thriller. Mostly, I’m fascinated by Elizabeth Holmes herself: the deep voice, the black turtleneck “uniform,” the driving ambition. What drives a person to behave in such a breathtakingly dangerous way? I sometimes have to use a slightly different accent or vocal tone in my portrayals, like when I do Jackie Kennedy (that soft, breathy voice) or Lady Bird Johnson (her Texas accent), and it’s always tough to maintain it, especially at moments of high emotion. I can only imagine how hard it must be for Elizabeth Holmes to maintain that deep voice every day.
LAST FAVORITE VINTAGE CLOTHING FIND?
I found a pristine red 1960s women’s suit through one of my favorite retro/vintage stores on Etsy to replace the one I’d been using for years for my Jackie Kennedy portrayal. It was a steal— just $48 and in pristine condition. Finding something that nicely detailed and in such nice condition is rare; finding something that fits is swoony-worthy. It has all these wonderful details—bound buttonholes, little weights in the hem, and self-covered buttons. I wore it last December a few times while giving lectures. Jackie was right—classic never goes out of style.
LAST MEANINGFUL FEEDBACK
YOU RECEIVED? After one recent performance portraying Alice Paul, the radical women’s suffrage activist, a great discussion got going about how we can reconcile the achievements of white women’s suffragists with their failure to embrace racial and ethnic equality. It was fascinating.
LAST GREAT LIVE PERFORMANCE YOU
SAW? David Sedaris onstage at the Auditorium last November. My mother and I have been following him ever since hearing him perform his short story about working as a Macy’s Christmas elf for This American Life years ago. That particular story is in his book Holidays on Ice, which is one of my favorites, although Me Talk Pretty One Day is my all-time top pick. His timing, his intonations, his phrasing—it all works together, and hearing him narrate his own works takes his humor to another level. Talk about holding a huge audience mesmerized for more than hour! He’s brilliant— funny, often naughty, and cuttingly insightful.
LAST GREAT BINGE-WORTHY STREAM?
Definitely Netflix’s The Crown. And not just because I portray Queen Elizabeth II. I’m fascinated by the blend of fiction and truth in this show. Many of the historical details are fictionalized, but the broader points the show makes are all remarkably true. It raises interesting questions: Where do we draw the line between “history” and “fiction”? Plus, the costumes and sets are amazing.
