UNION CHURCH OF HINSDALE EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS (UCECP)
wants to thank our families for their support during these unprecedented times.
As a staff and within the UCECP community we speak often about the rights of children. We believe education is the right of a child. Despite the unfortunate circumstances going on in the world right now, as a community of educators and learners, we are committed to a continued pursuit of this right for your child. This is why, since our first day of our physical building being closed, we have offered e-learning to all of our students.
We are proud of our school and teachers who are modeling resiliency and a healthy response to stress for our students, our families and for each other. At the UCECP we are choosing to respond to circumstances out of our control and challenging for us all with joy, not fear.
“We made a mutual commitment to show up for each other - you and your team have fulfilled your end of the commitment with no exception. It’s our turn to show up for you.”

Welcome! It certainly has been an interesting spring.
As you can imagine, stepping into the role of Editor in Chief during a pandemic has brought on challenges that I never saw coming. As Hinsdale Living’s Social Editor for the past four years, I’ve had the opportunity to cover many of the spectacular fundraising events and social fêtes that are important to the Hinsdale and Oak Brook communities. Now more than ever, many of the community organizations you’ve been supporting are playing an integral role in the fight against COVID-19. I am so grateful for the hard work and dedication of these organizations and the amazing people on the frontlines.
In the May issue, we highlight some of the area’s inspiring personalities—from moms to models. Summer Crosley graces our cover. After growing up in Hinsdale, the actress/model appeared on Showtime’s Californication from 2007 through 2014 and has been in magazines across the globe. Her greatest passion? Saving the planet. Summer shares more about her successful career and her mission, to which she credits her Midwest upbringing, in our cover story.
In anticipation of Mother’s Day, we sit down with four local moms for a candid chat about motherhood and balancing the many pieces that come with family and career. Moderator Margot Barber leads the conversation between Dr. Mira Albert, Stephanie Sposito, and Katie Mueller. Each mom also plays an important role in local business and they share their thoughts on success, inside and outside the home.
In our publisher’s profiles, Jameson Sotheby’s real estate expert Chris Pequet shares with us how she provides a personal touch during the buying and selling process; and Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois offers a different approach to negotiating during a divorce.
As they say, “April showers bring May flowers,” and I’m certainly looking forward to making May a marvelous month. I plan to spend a quiet Mother’s Day in with my husband, Mike, and daughter, Kassie, while hoping for a gift from our Talk of the Town page. Looking ahead to the summer, I plan on spending time with my family at Oak Brook Polo Club’s Prince of Wales Field for a lively match, a mint julep, and some time outside in the sun. I hope you’ll make plans to join us and let me know what you’re looking forward to in the months ahead.
Warmest wishes,
Kemmie Ryan Editor-in-Chief Kemmie@jwcmedia.com

Right now, Hinsdale Community Services’ #1 need is funding to buy incremental food.
They are expecting larger attendance than ever before at their pantries as: 1) unemployment rates surge and 2) families find it difficult to access school meal programs.
As grocers struggle to keep food on their own shelves, their food rescue donations to HCA have fallen. Food rescue typically accounts for 70% of HCA’s food stock.
They will use funds raised to purchase food during this crisis.
So much of the world we’re navigating is unknown and uncertain, but community is what has and always will carry us through.

Laugh with Me
Who doesn’t love a bit of classic comedy? We certainly do! SENIORS AND POLYPHARMACY
WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN
Polypharmacy is defined as the simultaneous use of multiple drugs to treat a single ailment or condition. Studies have shown that seniors are at a higher risk for polypharmacy, as they are typically on more medications, and often unclear on what the exact treatment is or even the name of the medications.
Prescribing medications is an essential part of what a physician does to improve the lives of their patients. However, there are some pitfalls of medications that patients should be aware of. Elderly are particularly at risk of side effects of medications and polypharmacy. For example, the treatment of hypertension and depression are two categories of diseases where medications can have unwanted side effects.
One of the most common medical conditions patients are treated for is hypertension. To reach proper control, it is not uncommon for patients to require two or even three antihypertensives. Often these medications are not changed unless the patient or family themselves observe a potential side effect or a sign of over dosage or strength and bring it up to the physician. Elderly patients are at particular risk because low blood pressure contributes to dizziness, fatigue, increased somnolence and finally gait instability leading to falls.
Depression and anxiety are two other commonly treated health issues in the elderly. Untreated depression can contribute to various physical symptoms such as agitation, appetite suppression, fatigue, confusion, and even
cognitive impairment. However, the medications used to treat depression have a lot of side effects that need to be considered and re-evaluated on a regular basis. Additionally, as patients age, those same medications which improved health may begin to negatively impact them. The dose may need to be reduced or the medication may need to be weaned off.
It’s also common for patients to be treated by various doctors, including their primary care physician and specialists. Sometimes when one physician starts a medication, the others don’t know or realize this has occurred, unless the patient is very well organized or medical records are well maintained and available to each doctor. When medications are changed frequently or patients are hospitalized many times or moved from one facility to another, the risk of polypharmacy increases. Most medication errors or polypharmacy occur during this transitional care of a patient.
So how can families and patients reduce the risk of not only polypharmacy but medication errors in general? First, keep a log or list of the medications, match that with the doctor’s list, and update both regularly as medication changes occur. Second, work closely with your primary care physician, as they should already be keeping track of the medications and any changes. Finally, if a patient lives in a senior community, working closely with the building staff and nurses, is imperative in reducing medication confusion and errors.

BALANCING IN HEELS
EDITED BY KEMMIE RYAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMES
Mothers carry many roles both at home and in the community—chauffeur, chef, coach, chaos coordinator, and more recently, teacher during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 10, we wanted to share an intimate panel discussion between four local moms about how they coordinate their time between family, self-care, philanthropy, and career.
Margot Barber is the mom behind The Hinsdale Area Moms group—an affiliate of The Local Moms Network and a hyper-local resource for parents and caregivers in the Hinsdale area—served as the moderator during our panel discussion at local hotspot Vie. Our panelists include Dr. Mira Albert, Katie Mueller, and Stephanie Sposito. Each mom may work outside the home in a different field—Mira is a pediatric dentist and owns Brush Pediatric Dentistry; Katie is the owner of Plate28 fitness studio; and Stephanie is the Director of Operations of Virant Restaurants—but the common thread of motherhood and balancing life brings them together.

Dr. Mira Albert, Katie Mueller, Margot Barber, Stephanie Sposito
Four local moms share their advice and what inspires them, inside and outside of the home.
Margot: How do you balance raising a family while excelling in your industry?
Mira: Time is most valuable; happiness is most imperative. I think time management is important, as well as having a village of friends and moms.
Katie: Balance can be tough, especially after being at home for 10plus years and then jumping into a startup scenario like Plate28. I feel like I have so much to prove. However, the mission at Plate28 is to build a stronger community and I apply that mission to both home and work. When I’m struggling, I ask myself questions like, ‘Is this going to matter in five years?’ I then use my intuition to prioritize what needs to get done. I make outsourcing the “chores” or what I don’t like to do my first priority. Then, I tell that little voice inside my head to ‘Shut up, let it go, you’re doing the best you can.’
Stephanie: I have to pick and choose what is most important. It’s important to figure out what you’re really capable of and to do that.
Margot: What advice do you have for moms struggling to balance it all?
Mira: I’m not sure if balance actually exists—maybe it averages out? You really need to focus on the things that make you happy and generally it’s a small percentage of things. I think in a very social community, you can start to get involved in many things and you really have to peel back the layers and figure out where your priorities lie.
Katie: Release the guilt; it’s a useless emotion. Figure out what is most important to your children through their eyes—at my house, it’s sit-down dinners a few times a week, bedtime stories, and mak-
ing an effort to do school pick up and drop off when I can. I’ve found if I can make a quality connection with each of my children once a day, I’m doing OK. The quality of the time connecting with them is more important than the quantity. Additionally, constant communication is the key to success. When I get my children involved with what is going on at the studio and in my work life, they tend to be more understanding as to why I can’t be everywhere all the time.
Stephanie: Finding balance for me is trying to be present where I am and focusing on what I’m doing in the moment. I try to be 100 percent present and not distracted by work when I’m with my daughter, and 100 percent focused on my colleagues and customers when I am at work.
Margot: When it comes to choosing activities, if it’s not a ‘hell yes,’ it’s a ‘hell no!’
Margot: Since starting your family, what are some of the things you’ve had to take step back from that you miss?
Stephanie: I got married and started a family right out of a good year of traveling. I thought there would be a lot more of that in the future, but that came to a temporary halt. I also used to be able to just jump on a bike and go for an hours long ride or go to a yoga class or meditate at any time. After becoming a mother, I needed to hire a sitter and prioritize that. I miss that freedom to just go out and do the things I love, but still enjoy those opportunities as I can. As far as international travel, I just decided to bring my daughter with me. This is a temporary time.
Mira: I’m ok with the way things are. If I want to do something, I figure out a way to do it. I try to make it work for my family.
HINSDALE LIVING 51
Margot: Katie, your business is self-care, but that may not always tie in for you. Do any of you find it hard to practice selfcare?
Katie: I’m incredibly lucky because the environment and culture at Plate28 feels like a daily self-care opportunity in itself. The way we—my team and I—help people, the fun we have, and the ongoing positive feedback we receive feeds my soul each day. I’m not exaggerating, I always say we have this really unique, reciprocal relationship with the Plate28 tribe—where we gain so much inspiration and encouragement from the people who walk through our doors each day. I’m in a fulfilling industry. Individually, my selfcare routine is engaging in enjoyable movement everyday which I know gives me the confidence and energy to make good, healthy choices 90 percent of the time.
Mira: I like that we’re seeing beauty industries going in a different direction. It’s nice to see our kids growing up in time where there are very real images and different types of people being represented. That said, self-care for me is nothing crazy; a little exercise, a manicure, and a trip to Ten Friends.
Margot: It’s important that we set that example too. If you’re talking negatively about yourself, your children will talk negatively about themselves. I also think it works in a positive way. I like for my kids to know I work out and take care of myself.
Margot: In terms of this work-life balance, what makes you feel accomplished in that space?
Katie: When I started out, I had a very clear vision of what success looked like for me. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t micromanaging but facilitating an environment where both my family and my team can grow. Although sometimes I lose my way, when I do, I revisit that vision. For me, the ultimate reward is being able to step away from both of my roles as mom and business owner and watch everything successfully function.
Stephanie: I think it’s important to approach your staff like another family and make sure that everyone’s needs are met. It’s about putting everyone in their place, trusting your partners and your staff, trusting your intuition, and watching the plan work. Also, building loyalty with families and the community is important. I’ve had those moments at the end of the day, just thinking, ’Wow that went really well.’
Mira: At home, accomplished is seeing my kids react to challenges head-on and with integrity. They’re getting to the ages where they see things, and when I see their responses and they’re very direct and full of integrity, I feel accomplished. At work I think the variety of things I’ve been fortunate to be a part of, such as some of the charity work that I do through our national organization to make sure all children have access to dental care. Also, I love the bonds I’ve formed with families—the long relationships and watching their kids grow up over the years.
Margot: You have all created these businesses that are such important pieces of our community, and we are all so thankful for your hard work and the example being set for all of our children.

Summer Crosley
SAVES the PLANET
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY B PHOTO
rom a young age, Hinsdale native Summer Crosley had a passion for fashion and beauty, but she ultimately pursued a career in medical device sales upon graduation from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing. That choice would prove to be serendipitous when, while on a work trip to Miami, Florida, Crosley was discovered by a modeling agent. “I signed with the agency that day,” said Crosley.
“I decided to pursue it full-time and am so glad I did.”
Even though her world changed drastically that day in a way she’d never imagined, Crosley took it all in stride, eventually relocating to Los Angeles at the advice of her agents. From there, she landed prestigious modeling gigs with recognizable publications ranging from GQ and Esquire to VOGUE and Elle.
FToday she’s been featured in more than 100 magazines worldwide and is represented by the top international modeling agencies, including Elite Models, 3D Model Agency in Cape Town, Next Models, and Wilhelmina.
“I love the travel and meeting new people, but I’m also highly inspired by being a positive influence in the lives of younger generations,” said Crosley. “I hope to instill in them the importance of self-confidence and impart what it takes to be successful in today’s competitive world.”
That’s something Crosley knows a thing or two about. After heading west to California, Crosley landed her first acting role on the Golden Globe Award-winning medical drama Nip/Tuck created by Ryan Murphy. Later, she appeared on Showtime’s adult sitcom Californication, which ultimately aired for seven seasons.
“Working on Nip/Tuck and Californication was very exciting, and both shows taught me how to overcome my inherent shyness and insecurities,” said Crosley. “It is pretty intimidating to work in

front of groups of people with multiple cameras all staring at you, so you quickly learn how to be more confident and motivated.”
While traveling for her acting and modeling career—to exotic beach locales like Fiji, Bali, Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and Costa Rica—Crosley also learned about various cultures and the importance of ocean and wildlife conservation, a cause she’s committed her life to. Even though she’s just a self-described small town girl, Crosley has already made a global impact in her ecofriendly cause.
“More so than the travel and meeting new people, I love my career because it gives me a platform to raise awareness of the human impact on the world’s oceans and rainforests,” explained Crosley. “Our world population is increasing rapidly. We have seven billion people living in the world, which is causing our wildlife and marine populations to become extinct from overfishing. Our oceans are contaminated every day with plastic, oils, and other debris, and Mother Earth cannot breathe and function properly if people continue to abuse and pollute. For over a decade, I have joined many ocean conservation groups to help clean up this pollution.”
Crosley says an easy way to get involved and join her in the movement includes researching local ocean conservation groups, like Oceana or Ocean Conservancy, to join beach or lake cleanup days, and to sign online petitions that support funding or awareness.
In addition to her environmental work, Crosley focuses her time and energy on an active lifestyle and the positive influence of her family and friends, spending her free time exercising, biking, hiking, and walking on the beach with her two
dogs. In her hometown, Crosley loves to explore the Salt Creek Woods Nature Preserve or stroll through downtown Hinsdale’s rich history.
“I love telling people I’m from the Midwest,” said Crosley. “It is true that people from small towns in the Midwest are some of the best folks out there. We grew up with more of a ‘simple life’ compared to those from Los Angeles or New York, which I believe sets a foundation for stronger values.”
For Crosley, those values include compassion, authenticity, and philanthropy.
“Never try to be someone you are not,” said Crosley. “Just be you and be kind always. Kindness goes a long way. You never know what someone else might be going through.”
Crosley practices what she preaches and leads by example in her fight to protect the world’s oceans. What’s next? Crosley said she wants to aid in recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.
“Now is the time to help those in need,” said Crosley. “There’s never been a better time!”

Ignite Asha Gala 2020
Ignite Asha founders Purva Shah and Dina Patel, along with the entire Ignite Asha team, welcomed nearly 200 guests to another successful fundraising gala in March. The evening kicked off with cocktails and a sumptuous dinner, before emcee and comedian Rajiv Satyal led guests in an entertaining paddle raise, live auction, and raffle. $80,000 was raised through sponsorships and fundraising at the event. This year’s beneficiary was SPYM, a nonprofit based in Delhi, India, that provides drug rehabilitation services to drug addicted youth ages 8 to 15 years old. igniteasha.org

PERSONAL TOUCH
There was a year when Chris Pequet sold both the most expensive and the least expensive homes in Hinsdale. Pequet, a top-selling agent with Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty in Hinsdale, doesn’t remember the year, but it’s indicative of how she approaches her real estate business.

“My specialty is just providing the service that I do. I work with people who are selling their great big home or have found a great big home in town and now they’re helping their children who are just getting started,” says Pequet. “It might be a different price range or in a suburb that is more economical, but I just want to provide the best service.”
Pequet often receives referrals from parents, friends and family members and takes pride in establishing and continuing rela-

tionships that last. She works with many transferees who, in turn, hire others coming to the area for work. It’s like a professional family tree.
“I go across all generations and income levels and provide superior service so that clients feel good about having me help their family and friends,” says Pequet.
Pequet grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and met her husband at Michigan State. She moved with her husband to Chicago soon after she graduated and after starting out selling pharmaceuticals and paper products, a friend convinced her she’d be adept at selling real estate.
“I had a girlfriend who owned a real estate company and she was always telling me I should get my license. Sales is sales but the real estate business becomes so personal. It’s such a personal decision to buy a house, often people’s biggest investment,” she says. “It means a lot to people so it’s very exciting to have people find their perfect home, whether their sizing up or sizing down.”
Pequet feels fortunate to be working in Hinsdale and the surrounding community, where she’s been an agent for more than 30 years.
“Hinsdale is a great community and a great place to be in the real estate business,” she says. “The schools are so good. The community almost sells itself.”
Pequet’s commitment to her clients extends to ensuring she can provide her full attention to each of her listings. She’s not interested in being the biggest agent, just the best.
“I don’t need to have the most listings because I want to maintain a personal touch. I put a limit on how many active listings I have and how many active buyers I work with,” says Pequet. “I know what it’s like when you get too many. All I’m doing is trying to give everyone the best service. I’ve never tried to be something I’m not.”
For nearly 30 years in Hinsdale, it’s been a winning recipe.
Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty is located at 330 W. Chestnut Street, Suite 2E, in Hinsdale. For more information on Chris Pequet, call 630-327-5175 or visit chrispequet.com.

KEEPING THE PEACE
In the 1981 novel, The War of the Roses, and the subsequent 1989 film starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, a couple become so bitter during their divorce proceedings they practically destroy their cherished home out of spite for each other. The tragicomedy offers an extreme example of what can happen when divorcing couples each adopt a “winnertakes-all” attitude. In the end, nobody wins, sometimes not even the lawyers.
The fictional Roses, Oliver and Barbara, would have been much better off entering the Collaborative Divorce process that many couples are using today to avoid the pitfalls of traditional divorce courts. Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois is the premier Collaborative Divorce organization in the state and offers couples a method to push forward with a divorce that is designed to prevent the kind of animosity that can grow during divorce proceedings, especially for couples with assets and child-custody issues at stake.
“The focus of Collaborative Divorce is that it’s an alternative to fighting in court,” says Karen Covy, a lawyer who chairs the Collaborative Law Institute’s Marketing Committee. “It’s been around for a few decades and provides a way for people to get divorced with more privacy.”
While some divorce court records can be sealed, any divorce proceeding that is long and heavy with conflict is susceptible to gaining public attention, especially for more prominent individuals and couples.
“For a lot of people privacy is important. People care about their public image, and they don’t want the whole world knowing their business,” says Covy. “Courts are public places and packed with people you don’t know. Court records are public.”
With the Collaborative Divorce process, couples go to court just one time to present a final agreement for the judge to approve. It involves each half of the couple securing legal counsel and agreeing to stick with the process until an agreement is reached. If either side withdraws, the lawyers must recuse themselves at that point and the traditional divorce proceedings start from scratch.
Another advantage of Collaborative Divorce is each half of the couple benefits from an entire team of experts who have knowledge that traditional divorce lawyers usually don’t. Along with a
lawyer, the team includes a coach, often a financial specialist, and a child specialist if there are children’s interests involved.
“Not all meetings, but some meetings you have the entire team in the room, and you can work through issues instead of running back and forth to court,” Covy says. “Divorce involves a lot of different aspects of your life.”
For those who may be thinking of entering the Collaborative Divorce process, Covy advises hiring a lawyer that is familiar with it. Collaborative Law Institute offers a list of lawyers who are familiar with the process.
“I’m as interested in seeing my clients get over the finish line and I’m on the same page as they are,” Covy says. “Some lawyers act that way anyway, but with Collaborative Divorce a lawyer acts with the same amount of advocacy but not the aggression.”
While it might not be for everyone—couples who’ve been married a short time and have no real estate holdings or children may be much better off with a “kitchen-table” divorce according to Covy, the point of Collaborative Divorce is to help couples see the future.
“It makes a huge difference in how you live your life afterward. Stuff happens and you move on,” Covy says. “It should be a blip in the road of your life, not your whole life.”
Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois can be reached at 312-8828000, collablawil.org.

DAN JANOWICK could not have been more excited to be named the Executive Director of The Community House in February, after working at the nonprofit for 15 years. Being only the fifth person to hold the role in the organization’s almost 80-year history, Janowick certainly stepped into a big role. Perhaps most well-known for its recreation, education, and art programming; it was The Community House’s unique mental health services and support of a low-income neighborhood in unincorporated DuPage County that most attracted Janowick to the new job opportunity. “For a nonprofit organization to offer this wide range of services, without any tax support, is a testament to the vision and generosity of the Western Suburbs,” says Janowick. He and his wife, Amanda, live in Winfield with their two children—Josh and Will. Janowick believes in the power of an involved community and spends his free time volunteering as a coach, being a den leader, serving as an elected Park Commissioner, and exploring trails on hikes with his family. Here are a few of his most notable lasts:
LAST VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY THAT INSPIRED YOU? In early March, I had the opportunity to volunteer by sorting donated clothes at Walker School in Clarendon Hills for an organization called Cradles to Crayons. It was inspiring to see the generosity of local families, combined with the volunteer efforts of School District 181 administration, the Hinsdale Rotary Club, and community volunteers.
LAST BOOK YOU READ THAT GOT YOU THINKING? Good to Great, by Jim Collins. It was perfect to read during my transition to Executive Director and as our board and staff continue to find ways to help the organization reach new levels of service to the community.
LAST TRIP PLANNED? We had planned on going to visit Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Slovenia with a group of families this June. It would have been my first visit to Europe, but unfortunately, this trip has put on hold due to COVID-19 health concerns.
LAST COMMUNITY GATHERING THAT MADE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU?
I saw a friend’s social media post about celebrating birthdays while practicing social distancing and with a couple simple Facebook posts, our school community started planning “birthday parades” for kids who wouldn’t have the option of parties with friends and family. In the past three weeks we’ve participated in lots of hornhonking, smile-inducing, car parades for families, and one parade for a local senior home and its residents. It’s been a great reminder of how powerful communities can be when they work together and why doing the little things can truly make the world a better place.
