RESILIENCE
THE ESSENTIAL SKILL FOR EMERGING YOUNG ADULTS
COVID-19 was not in your young adult’s career game plan. “What did you do during the pandemic?” is a question for the rest of their lives.
Rather than hole up in their rooms and play video games, here’s a chance to build confidence in the face of adversity. A chance to invest in themselves and overcome this obstacle. Perhaps some will take a closer look at sciences and beyond—careers in healthcare, logistics and crisis management may find new appeal.
COVID-19 is a serious dose of reality.
“Sheltering in place” is new, different and for many, not easy. Discussing your young adult’s next steps during the stress of a pandemic can be overwhelming.
That’s where we come in.
CAMPUS2CAREER is the nation’s premier advisory group for young adults. We guide the often awkward and difficult career discussions between parent and child. For more than ten years, we have placed hundreds of candidates into great first jobs. Our success rate of 98% is unparalleled -- defined as “not just a job, but a meaningful job in the field of their choice.”
C2C has adapted our advisory and coaching services to the new environment. We are now offering budget friendly a la carte consultations tailored to the specific needs of your child and your family.
We welcome a confidential introductory discussion.
Let’s make this a productive time for your children and your family.

THE VILLAGE OF WILMETTE APPROVES $375,000 TO HELP SMALL BUSINESSES IMPACTED BY THE COVID-19 CRISIS.
BY KEMMIE RYAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
The Wilmette Village Board is leading by example on how North Shore communities can help local small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic—by passing its own $375,000 relief package this past week.
The program, which utilizes municipal sales tax rebates, will provide immediate financial support to restaurants, retail stores, and other local businesses. It is one of the only locally funded programs in the area.
“We recognize that COVID-19 has placed a substantial burden on the Village’s small business community. This program will provide funds for businesses that need help now making payroll or paying suppliers,” said Wilmette Village President Bob Bielinski.
Eligible businesses must meet certain requirements in order to be considered for a grant. These include: a current and valid Village of Wilmette Business License; busi -

SPECIAL REPORT: Real Estate in the Time of Coronavirus
THE IRONY OF LIVING IN A “SHELTER AT PLACE” MANDATE IS THAT MANY ON THE NORTH SHORE REMAIN IN A STATE OF TRANSITION, EITHER WITH THEIR HOMES CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET OR NEEDING TO FIND A NEW HOME TO HUNKER DOWN IN. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT OUR COMMUNITIES ARE SERVED BY SOME OF THE FINEST REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE NATION. HERE IS WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY ABOUT HOW THEY ARE KEEPING THEIR CLIENTS SAFE AND KEEPING MOMENTUM GOING DURING THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES.
BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Like many real estate professionals on the North Shore, Jena Radnay had been following reports from China, South Korea, and Hong Kong about the coming COVID-19 pandemic as early as January. At the same time, she was also virtually monitoring the ride times at Walt Disney World, in anticipation of a spring break getaway that day-by-day, began to disappear from the realm of possibility.
Then, as the first coronavirus cases began hitting the U.S. in unprecedented numbers, the Winnetka-based @properties broker and agent began to anticipate the worst.
“The first Sunday in March, I went to two Costcos, two Targets, and another supermarket,” says Radnay, explaining that she bought as many hand sanitizers, disinfecting alcohol wipes, and cleaning supplies as she could get her hands on. “I saw it happening so for me, I was already one step ahead of the game.”
What was once unthinkable—the literal shutdown of the state and most of the country—became an undeniable reality on Friday, March 20, when Governor JB Pritzker issued a “shelter in place” mandate for most Illinois residents, effective the following Saturday.
Only the essential services are allowed to continue operating. But the good news for residents who are being told to “stay at home” when their home lives are in transition is that real estate is among the businesses that falls in that “essential” category. Fortunately for us, we are served by some of the finest in the nation—agencies that are not only prepared for the crisis but innovating safe new ways
to keep business moving.
Rachael Rohn, Chicagoland regional president of Compass, says her firm was ready to direct their agents and guide them through best practices for safety during this unprecedented moment in history.
“This has proven to be an uncertain time

Editor’s Note
Exactly one year ago, I was strolling the grounds of Holland’s Keukenhof, the largest flower park in the world. Devoted gardeners plant seven million spring-flowering bulbs each year and, from mid-March until mid-May, 26,000 guests a day enjoy the fruits of their labor in this veritable heaven on earth. The Keukenhof did not open this year in the name of social distancing, but nature persists.
The daffodils and hyacinth, steadfast in their purpose, fill their gardens with intoxicating perfume, while fritillaria’s kaleidoscopic bells bob gently and unknowingly in the breeze. And those world-famous Dutch tulips, oblivious to the lack of audience, stretch their long and elegant necks toward the sun.
Lake Bluff and Lake Forest, like the Keukenhof, are incomparable. In my ten years as a resident of the latter, I have walked our family’s beloved hound mix to the lake almost every day, never once taking for granted the extraordinary beauty that surrounds me. This landscape beckons and calms us, especially in these troubling times, but more importantly it holds a body of residents immersed in philanthropy, culture, and a tradition of communal support. It is no wonder so many who grew up here return to raise their families.
The stunning subject on our cover, Stephanie Klein, is one such resident. She was born and bred in Lake Forest, then went on to attend DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where we met and formed our lifelong friendship. She and her husband Eric moved back to Lake Forest after graduate school to raise their three incredible boys. I’ve no doubt you will find her journey, shared on these pages, both heart-warming and fascinating.
Speaking of extraordinary women, the salon piece in this month’s issue highlights a Forest & Bluff advisory council assembled for me by my dear friend Dustin O’Regan, Sheridan Road’s Editor in Chief. Every member of this group
has strong ties to our community covering a broad spectrum of involvement. They own thriving businesses, volunteer in our schools, helm philanthropies, and raise families. I’m grateful their endeavors will bring fresh story ideas to my desk.
If this sounds more to you like a love letter to our community than an Editor’s Note, you’re absolutely correct. I want more than anything for you to feel this is your magazine, and cannot wait to bring you an elevated, well-rounded publication highlighting the people, places, and experiences you cherish. Thank you for reading, and please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d truly love to hear from you.

LYDIA EVANS has been crafting custom letterpress stationery and notecards through her Libertyville business, Letterpress by Lydia, for the last eleven years. “I love the fine art process of letterpress printing and the enthusiasm of my clients about the handcrafted, heartfelt creation of each piece,” Lydia shares.
“The tactile feel of the de-bossed print on a soft cotton paper is just the most delightful, luxurious way to let someone know you’re thinking about them.” It takes approximately 10-14 businees days for her to produce a project, working with you in-home or virtually.
“I have clients all over the globe that I’ve never met in person and it’s a breeze to complete projects with today’s
technology to keep us connected,” Lydia shares. “It is also great fun to print a client’s design, so if you have something you’ve created, or a custom logo you’d like printed, I love printing other designer’s work as well as client’s illustrations and ideas. I also offer digital printing, envelope addressing, and foil stamping services, so all of your stationery dreams can become a beautiful reality.”

RUNNING AN INTERIOR DESIGN BUSINESS requires a lot of surface space for samples, mood boards, invoices, and the like so my desk gets heavy attention. Right now the tabletop is filled with assorted items for the guest bedroom I am designing for the 2020 Lake Forest Showhouse benefitting the Infant welfare Society of Chicago. I like to incorporate vintage treasures, which can provide use while lending beauty. A water lily fashioned in English porcelain serves as an office supply cachepot, while a Murano dish holds office snacks or sweets to get through a busy workday. Stacks of vintage bamboo lap trays, purchased several years back at Infant Welfare’s Antiques & Treasures in the Field, corral my client work/samples and inspiration in an organized (OK, semi-organized) stack. Nearby are essentials which provide added support, such as a never-ending cup of coffee or tea, a rich, fragrant hand cream, and the endless to dos and appointments in my various calendars.

38 FOREST & BLUFF
CULTURE & COMMUNITY
“Comfort food never goes out of style. Chicken Pot Pie is warm, delicious, filling, and a taste from childhood that withstands time. Especially in these times, people crave something comforting.” –Matt Barba, General Manager at Deer Path Inn
We couldn’t agree more, Matt. Thank you for sharing one of the Inn’s beloved recipes with us.
Serves Four
INGREDIENTS
• 1, 4 to 6 cup ovenproof casserole or baking dish (Note: This recipe also works well portioned into minicasseroles as individual servings.)
• 1, 4-pound chicken
• 1 Tbsp. olive oil
• 1 tsp. salt
• ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper (three or four grinds with a pepper mill)
• 5 Tbsp. unsalted butter, divided
• 1 1/2 cups chicken stock, divided
• 1 large leek, washed well and trimmed of roots and dark outer leaves, remaining white and light green portion sliced into ¼ inch rounds
• 1 bunch (five stalks) fresh asparagus, tips cut into 1-inch pieces and placed in a small bowl; remainder of stalks trimmed of scales and sliced on the bias into 1/2-inch dice
• 2 cups fresh baby spinach leaves, washed and patted dry
• 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed
• 6 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
• 1 cup whole milk
• 1 tsp. whole-grain mustard
• Zest of one lemon
• 1, 10 x 15 sheet (1 lb.) frozen puff pastry dough, thawed
• 1 egg
• 1 Tbsp. milk
THE DISH
METHOD
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees with oven rack in center position. Pat chicken dry. Rub with olive oil and salt. Grind black pepper over all.
2. Place chicken in roasting pan. Roast for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 400 degrees, until chicken registers 165 degrees on a thermometer. Remove chicken to a cooling rack.
3. In a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter. Gently sauté leeks, stirring frequently for 2 minutes. Add ½ cup of the chicken stock. Continue to simmer. Add bias-cut asparagus. Sauté for one more minute. Stir in spinach leaves just until wilted. Remove all to a large bowl. Stir in lemon zest and set aside.
4. Add remaining 4 tablespoons of butter to skillet over medium heat. Once butter has melted, sprinkle in the flour and whisk until flour has toasted and mixture is smooth and golden brown. Add remaining cup of chicken stock, whisking until smooth. Add milk, and continue to whisk. Stir in asparagus tips. Remove from heat, and pour sauce (it will be quite thick) into the bowl of reserved vegetables. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.
5. Remove meat from chicken and shred/cut into bite-sized pieces. Add to reserved vegetable/sauce mixture.
6. On a clean work surface, tear three pieces of parchment paper. On the first, flip the casserole dish, and trace around it, onto the paper. Cut out the shape to use as your pattern for cutting the puff pastry. Spread the second piece of parchment on a cookie sheet. Set aside. On the third piece of parchment, unfold and gently smooth your puff pastry sheet. Gently place your pattern over the pastry. Using the tip of a sharp knife, pierce a dotted line around the pattern. Using kitchen shears, gently cut the dough along the dotted lines, being careful not to squash the pastry. Slide the pastry onto the prepared cookie sheet. Make egg wash, by whisking the egg with 1 tablespoon of milk. Brush the pastry you have cut with egg wash. Using a deer-shaped cookie cutter, cut a deer out of the remaining puff pastry. Place this on top of the first prepared dough. Brush deer with more egg wash.
7. Bake pastry at 400 for 12 to 15 minutes, until puffed and golden brown. Remove cookie sheet to cooling rack.
8. Spoon pot pie filling into casserole dish. Place in oven and heat until bubbling, about 15 minutes. Top with prepared puff pastry. Serve.

ASTUDY IN SOFT SPRING COLOR. In-season blooms arranged in a palette evoking spring’s gentle arrival will feel organic and unforced. Here, the expressive nature of blossom-dotted branches reference what is to come, while snowball viburnum add bursts of chartreuse, spring’s quintessential shade of green. Apricot ranunculus and pale yellow parrot tulips contribute a soft, lush balance to the rigid branch lines, and those frilly, fragrant double-narcissus embody pure sunshine with their punchy orange and yellow faces.

LUXURY AMERICAN SPORTSWEAR
Designer Adam Lippes is bringing his mastery of relaxed elegance to a musthave tableware collection for English interiors brand OKA. Here he shares with Forest & Bluff the story behind this collection and the secrets of his effortless, approachable entertaining style.
I’ve been interested in launching a home collection for quite some time. Much of my apparel collection is inspired by great interior designers, from Mongiardino to Madeleine Castaing. I’m inspired by their sense of the “mix.” In my collection with OKA, we’ve created a mix of patterns loosely inspired by Chinese Export pottery. All of the patterns can be used together from the simplest to the most exuberant. I find the idea of having your everyday and your wedding china so crazy, so I wanted to create a collection that could be your heirloom china, but you could use it day-in and dayout. And yes, it goes in the dishwasher!
With entertaining as well, the most important aspect is also the mix! But in this case, the mix of the guests. Everything else is secondary. I entertain a lot in New York City and give a lot of thought to that list—young, old, rich, poor, uptown and downtown. I think this is a very NYC thing and I cherish that. I always love seeing two people with absolutely nothing in common sitting in the corner of my home and chatting all night. Food-wise, as most of my dinners are large, I normally do a buffet with simple, fresh, and light food I call “no-brainer” food. Think filet of beef with horseradish sauce, roast vegetables, a rough grain, and crisp green salad with a shallot vinaigrette. And I let people sit anywhere and everywhere. My home is their home. Flowers and greenery are key. My house looks a bit like a greenhouse every day, full of ferns and palms and orchids, so I usually add huge bunches of sweat peas or peonies for color focal points.
The OKA x Adam Lippes collection launches on May 13, available exclusively through oka.com.

theCreatingPerfect Potager
words by Wendy Franzen photography by Linda Oyama-Bryan
MAY IS THE MAGICAL MONTH where Mother Nature banishes frost and earth warms to nurture tender plants and flowers. It is the ideal time to create your dream potager. A potager, or French kitchen garden, is a charming informal garden in close proximity to the home. Holding vegetables and herbs for snipping at a moment’s notice, most potagers also contain flowers for color splashes and drawing in pollinators.
Landscape architect Sara Furlan has been creating kitchen gardens for most of her life. She fell in love with gardening as a child, delighting in visits to her across-the-path neighbor who had created an extraordinary potager. “The soil was so soft I could push my hand through and pull out a potato,” she exclaims. Sara’s parents grew up in farming families, and she credits her father with nurturing her love of gardening. “He allowed me to develop seeds on the sunny sideboard in our home and helped me build cold frames for transitioning these seedlings to the yard.” Eventually, she turned their entire backyard into a garden, and quickly tapped into a desire for marrying aesthetics with the production-driven farming lessons learned from family. I was very lucky to know what I wanted to do from a young age; I just didn’t know what to call it,” she says. A degree in landscape architecture from University of Illinois led her to a career with Lake Bluff based Mariani Landscape.
Now the Design Director, Sara works with a team of dedicated horticulturalists who build and maintain vegetable gardens and landscape designs across our community. Here she shares her tips and tricks for creating a successful potager.

HOUSE & GARDEN
THE GARDEN
THE BASICS:
1. Choose a spot in your yard with at least six hours of sun exposure. If you’re not certain, an inexpensive light meter will let you know if you have the requisite amount.
2. Build raised beds with untreated landscape timbers (an 18-inch depth is ideal). The soil warms quickly, it allows for better drainage, and is ergonomically easier to harvest.
3. Beds should be no more than 4-feet wide, giving you two feet on each side for planting, weeding, and harvesting.
4. Prepare beds with amended, organic soil. Having beds ready by Mother’s Day, long considered the safe time to plant tender herbs and vegetables, is ideal.
5. Vertical support is key. A-frames, trellises, and french tuteurs all lend beauty and save space while allowing climbing plants like cucumbers and sweet peas to thrive.
6. If rabbits love your garden as much as you do, the only true preventative measure is fencing. “Three feet high with
openings no bigger than ½-inch,” she shares.
7. Don’t forget the flowers. Edible flowers such as nasturtium, lavender, and pansies add beauty as well as culinary diversity. Sunflowers will attract finches and butterflies. Zinnias and dianthus grow beautifully in our climate, and their petals are edible as well. Soft, delicate dill reseeds freely and is pollinator friendly.
8. If you are tight on space or need a low-maintenance routine, growing herbs and cherry tomatoes in pots on a sunny porch is your answer.
9. And finally, enjoy. “Treat yourself to the blossoms of hope,” says Sara.
Sara and her team tackle the full spectrum of home gardening, from planning and execution to maintenance, and everything in between. For inquiries, contact Sara at sfurlan@marianilandscape.com

Great Mother’s Day Gift Idea
THE SPORTING LIFE
PLAN A
LOOKING BACK ON HIS Lake Forest High School years, Danny Fisher reflects, “After playing on the JV team freshman year, the drive just kept getting bigger and bigger. I became focused on playing Division I golf.” Fisher was called up to play varsity in the post-season of his sophomore year with the Scouts, setting him on course to play at the highest collegiate level. His dreams materialized when he secured a spot on Miami University’s Division I golf team, the only freshman to be added to the roster this year. The degree of discipline required to play at this level fits him like a glove. “I’m up at 5:30a.m. to lift at 6 a.m. with my team, with academic classes from 8a.m. to 1p.m., then practice at 2p.m. I am a person who loves structure, so it’s fantastic,” he shares. “And I can’t say enough about the six other guys on the team. It’s been such a positive experience.”
Danny credits his parents, Lesley and Chris Fisher, with providing the foundation necessary for his success. “I don’t tell them nearly enough. They’ve both always been there for me emotionally and mentally. And they’ve traveled to every college tournament my freshman year!” Danny expresses. “I’m very, very thankful. They’ve found the perfect balance of knowing what I need and doing the best they can to be there in every way.” This includes instilling a tremendous work ethic, which has served him well in his first year as a Miami RedHawk. As a marketing major in the Farmer School of Business, Fisher must exercise discipline off the course as well.
“I’m trying to be the best I can be. I’m planning on turning pro after college and have my goals set on the PGA tour,” he shares. “While I have no interest in having a Plan B, my parents always emphasize that life is long, and that’s where the business school comes in.”
And what has that other great influence in his life, golf, taught him? “Golf is like the never-ending search for perfection. You’ll hit that one perfect shot, and then the next shot won’t be, so it has taught me to always work hard, and this lesson has extended to everything I am passionate about.” Tee up Plan A.

KETAMINE AND COVID-19
IF YOU ARE LIKE ME, the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing you feelings of anxiety, isolation, and uncertainty unlike anything you have experienced. Even in the absence of underlying or previous mental illness, the challenges we as a nation and society face can cause generalized anxiety and depression. If you already have a history of depression or anxiety, your symptoms may be worsened by the mandatory shelter-in-place orders, job insecurity, financial stress, and added isolation. We are seeing that the population as a whole is experiencing pressures that will undoubtedly tax our mental health for the unforeseeable future. So what can you do to address this?
First of all, do your best to maintain a routine that will support your mental, physical, emotional, and social health. Try to exercise regularly and even though most residential and commercial gyms are closed at the time, you can always take a brisk walk or run while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Alternatively take advantage of the surge in online and live streaming exercise sessions that you can do in the comfort of your living room. Set a schedule so that you are doing at least 30 minutes of exercise three or more times a week. The exhilaration, feeling of accomplishment, and surge in endorphins are all beneficial for mood.
Although social gatherings in groups is prohibited, there are many ways to keep in touch with family and friends thanks to technology. And if getting on an old-fashioned phone call isn’t enough, try using Facetime or Zoom to video chat with your best friend or even with a large group all at once. Although there is no substitute for a dinner party or happy hour, we are fortunate to live in times that allow such social interaction via technology.
When it comes to your mental health, first and foremost follow the recommendations set forth by your psychiatrist or mental health provider. Although most doctors and therapists are moving to a telemedicine model of care, this can be quite effective, and you can have very productive sessions from your home. Continue taking your medications and if your symptoms are worsened by the pandemic, contact your doctor for an evaluation and/or adjustment. Try to keep only positive influences around you and don’t let the negative energy of others bring you down. And remember that we will get through
this! It may be many weeks or months, and will involve sacrifice and stress, but we will return to normalcy, so think positively to your best ability.
Our clinic will remain open during the pandemic and shelterin-place. The American Society of Ketamine Physicians, of which IV Solutions is a member, has deemed ketamine treatment an essential service in these times of added stress, anxiety, isolation, and uncertainty. We are following all CDC guidelines and precautions for disinfecting and cleanliness and our private rooms ensure social distancing. Patients are screened carefully before appointments. If ketamine is a potential option for you, please contact us and we will evaluate and coordinate your care with a free phone consultation. Please be safe, stay healthy, and take the time to thank our health care workers and doctors for the huge sacrifices they are making during this time. Life will move on for most, but for many it will be changed forever by COVID-19.
IV Solutions and Ketamine Centers is located at 300 Village Green Road, Suite 225 in Lincolnshire and at 712 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. AWARM SUMMER SUN is rising over verdant lawns, drying dew drops from blades of grass on its way to a clear blue sky. It is 1984 and school is out. Children do not rise with the ping-ping-glow of a smartphone. It is instead the giddy anticipation of hopping on a bicycle that draws them from bed. Gathering friends along the way while peddling the winding, treelined streets of Lake Forest, bronzed limbed and carefree, is the masterplan. Swimsuits are thrown on as base layers, allowance is shoved into pockets for ice cream at Sweets. Who knows what adventures may unfold on this glorious, wide-open day?
Stephanie Klein (née Beck) was born and raised, along with brothers Stewart and Warren, in Lake Forest. Riding her bike from sun-up to sun-down with friends that she continues to hold dear is a cherished memory. Playing tennis on the high school team, swimming at Knollwood, and working as a Sunset check-out girl are also fondly remembered. “Moving back here to raise our family was an easy decision,” she explains. “I wanted them to experience this sense of community and the freedom to roam that is rare in today’s world,” she shares. “But it is bittersweet…I’d give anything for my parents to have seen our boys grow up. They would have been such a huge presence in their lives.”
Jean and Lee Beck, Stephanie’s parents, were deeply committed Lake Foresters. After meeting at Waterloo High School in Iowa and attending separate colleges, they married. Lee then went to the University of Iowa’s medical school on the GI Bill and Jean took a job as an operating room nurse. They found their way to Chicago’s North Shore when Lee was sent to Great Lakes Naval Base, and to make ends meet, he moonlighted at Lake Forest Hospital. “And he stayed! He worked for 30 years at the hospital as an anesthesiologist, spending several as chief of staff,” she explains, smiling at the recollection. “My parents loved living here. My mom was President of the Lake Forest Symphony, and an incredibly passionate fundraiser. And she treasured playing bridge with friends and gardening at our family home.” Dr. Beck often spent his cherished free time hunting, and along with Jean, founded the Lake Forest chapter of Ducks Unlimited. She also fondly remembers his passion for golf. “If he wasn’t at the hospital, you would most likely find him on the golf course at Knollwood. He loved to play as a family, too. Most of our family vacations revolved around playing golf. We all grew up playing. That’s where I get my love of the game, from my dad.” The apple does not fall far from the tree, as the saying goes. Stephanie, while raising Alex (20); Ryan (17); and Tyler (14); with her husband, Eric, has spent many hours devoted to community service. From serving on Lake Forest Hospital’s Women’s Health Advisory Council to completing a recent three-year term on the

Lake Forest Caucus, giving back is part of who she is. It is the Beck DNA. “All of my jobs have been about service and helping people,” she relates. “It’s what I love to do.”
When Lee and Jean passed away in quick succession and her brothers were too distant to help, Stephanie was saddled with clearing out her parents’ home on the Lake Forest Academy grounds. “They were of the depression era when you saved everything,” she confides. “Dealing with 40 years of their collective accumulation was emotionally taxing and completely overwhelming.” This is what led her to create her current, thriving business, Happinest Organizing. She has distinguished herself by focusing on both external and internal clutter, tackling each project with compassion. “From my life experience I know that we all have emotional attachments to things. I have a great deal of empathy for clients dealing with the unenviable task of letting go,” she shares.
Talking with clients and sharing their stories aids in the process of parting with objects. “Clutter is indecision, and a huge part of my job is helping clients decide what to do.” The great value-add is that Happinest deals with every object after the decision-making process is complete. Purging, organizing and putting systems in place are major components of the company, but it does not end there. “I take everything away in the greenest possible way, including recycling and dropping donations at Forest & Found,” she states. “I often tell my clients that they have gotten their use and joy out of the things they’re letting go, and why not put those things out into the universe and let others enjoy them, too?”
Stephanie turned her passion into a business, with the hope of helping others and making a positive impact on their lives. Jean and Lee would no doubt be proud.

T’S ABOUT 6:30 P.M. on a Wednesday during the school year as high school teens begin to trickle in through the doors of CROYA, giving high fives and shouting hello’s to friends and staff as they grab a snack and pop in and out of the youth workers’ offices to chat. Music plays in the background. The din gets louder as spontaneous games start up and as more teens stream through the doors and the 7 o’clock hour nears.
When it’s time to start the meeting, though, everyone gathers round the main room of Student Union wherever they can find a spot. They get relatively quiet as Haley Banta, this year’s Chairman of the Senior High Youth Executive Committee, kicks off the weekly high school youth meeting. There is no adult in charge; they observe and facilitate from the sidelines. The first 25 minutes are reserved for ice breakers, announcements, sign-ups, and safe initiations for first-timers. After that comes the big game of the week (e.g., Bubble Ball, Dating Game, What’s Behind that Door?)—a critical element that keeps youth coming back.
If you could be a fly on the wall, you’d be truly amazed by this is a group of self-directed teenagers coming together in a “mostly” quiet and organized fashion to get some business done, and to have some much needed mid-week fun.
“This is one of the most exciting things I’ve gotten to do in high school,” says Banta of her role as chairman. “I’ve looked up to the chairs so much, and I always dreamed of being an example of CROYA for others and give back doing something I love so much.”
This is where everything starts at CROYA—with youth—and what has made this rare community-supported youth organization survive, and thrive, for 40 years. To celebrate this milestone, CROYA will host an anniversary event on May 30—inside and outside its own Student Union. The block-party-type event will feature CROYA bands involved with the youth organization over the years—including alumni and current CROYA musicians. Local vendors will offer food for sale (ideally at “1980s prices”). And, founders, supporters, and trailblazers along the way will be recognized for their contributions.
“Our 40th is a real op-
portunity to have people come back and see the facility, see what we’ve been doing, and have fun,” says CROYA Director Todd Nahigian. “We are bringing back some of the bands that got their start in CROYA 30 or 40 years ago.”
THE EARLY YEARS
For those not so familiar with CROYA and how it came to be, it is apropos to take a look back to understand the impetus, the visionaries that spearheaded what eventually became CROYA, how it works (everything really does start with youth), and how it has evolved and grown to be a nationally respected model for a community youth organization.
While CROYA was officially founded in 1980, under the leadership of Mayor Frank J. Waldeck, the seed for its formation began to grow in the mid1970s in a community hit hard by problems with its youth: teen suicides, drug and alcohol abuse, vandalism, and a teen gang called “The Losers.” Also, the movie, Ordinary People—which was set and filmed in Lake Forest and neighboring communities, and told the story of one affluent teenager’s attempted suicide—hit too close to home. Concerned community residents and civic leaders decided to look beneath the surface.
The City of Lake Forest commissioned a study by the Lake County Youth Service Bureau, tasked with assessing youth needs. Their report specifically recommended the formation of a “youth council” with a “non-threatening, low-key, informal counselor” to be hired by the city and directly responsible to the city council. The youth council would be communitybased and have youth as its only focus. The CROYA committee was thus established and formed of citizens appointed by the mayor of Lake Forest and the village president of Lake Bluff. The original governing body included a chairman, students, parents, and members at large who represented the communities of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff.
In addition to Waldeck, some of those early community visionaries and youth advocates were Eugene Hotchkiss (then president of Lake Forest College),then Aldermen Frank Farwell and John Hennessy, John Fischbach (then city manager), and Scott Bermingham (CROYA’s first adult board chair).
“I am very proud of what’s happened to CROYA in 40 years,” says Eugene Hotchkiss, president emeritus of Lake Forest College and CROYA’s first chairperson in 1980. “It has matured and become an important part of our community.
“I think it was essential for CROYA to get the city’s approval and support early on. The city’s support continues to be vital to CROYA and Lake Forest is special in supporting an organization like this.”

THE CROYA PROCESS
The financial support was one key piece, but getting started wasn’t easy; the fledgling youth agency persevered through trial and error in the first few years to find its footing and figure out a formula that worked. It seems unanimous among people involved with CROYA in the 1980s that the real turning point came when Margot Martino became involved, first as a volunteer, then as head of the board, and finally as CROYA’s first director in 1984. At first, she often held meetings with as few as six youth in attendance, and they met in various places, among them Gorton Community Center, City Hall, and sometimes her own home.
“It was because of Mrs. Martino that CROYA became an organization which listened to the youth while hearing adults as well,” says Hotchkiss. It was Martino who, when adults wanted to step in and take control, insisted that CROYA should be youth-centered and run by youth.
“When I started, there was no prototype,” says Martino, longtime Lake Forest resident. “I believe that kids are the greatest treasure we have to leave to the world, and I found that kids are very intuitive when it comes to knowing what the problems are and what are some solutions we can work on.”
The critical element that eventually became clear was that youth must be at the center—conceiving, developing, and being accountable for their own youth-guided programs and activities.
“Too often, activities were imposed on the youth, in which many participated but felt little sense of ownership,” explained Hotchkiss in the book Empowering Teens.*
“The CROYA Process doesn’t come easily,” Martino commented (also in Empowering Teens). “Turning over ownership to kids is the hardest thing to do. Kids take pride in CROYA. They police themselves. They don’t want bad things to happen.”
It became clear that youth could only find the gratification and empowerment they
needed by directing those initiatives themselves, learning by failures and successes—always with trusted adults guiding them along the way. And, it was also essential that those trusted adults not be parents, but trained and qualified adult youth workers whom teens could trust and respect in a different way than their parents. The CROYA Adult Board was the advisory resource body put in place to invite participation from parents at an oversight level, but they are not involved in day-to-day CROYA operations or activities with youth.
“Many people don’t know that CROYA has been a force in our community for 40 years,” says Jennifer Winick Karras, current chairperson of the CROYA Adult Board whose two daughters have been involved in CROYA. “This is an organization that deeply cares about the youth in our community, that each young person deserves to be respected and valued. It is an empowering place where the competent staff helps kids go through the process themselves of recognizing their own abilities and nurturing them.”
The staff (i.e., youth workers), it seems, are essential to the formula for success. “CROYA is a healthy support system; we lean on the staff for advice your friends aren’t qualified to give,” explains Banta. “The staff makes us feel that we are equals, friends, and a trusted resource. They understand what high school is like, know how to empathize with that, treat us like we are responsible people, and give us the trust we give them.”
EVOLUTION
In the early years, not having its own place was preventing CROYA from realizing its full potential. In 1987, a generous donation from the Waldo Morgan Allen Charities, Inc., allowed CROYA to build out its own space in a portion of the Lake Forest Recreation Center with a community room, kitchen, and staff offices. It was modest but it was a place youth could call home. In 2003, CROYA was able to expand again, occupying a larger section of the recreation center. And, not long after, CROYA, the Adult Board, and the CROYA Foundation Board

embarked upon a $3 million capital campaign that (thanks to the generosity of community members) would expand CROYA’s footprint to a 10,000-square-foot new Student Union in 2007—complete with a huge gathering space, performance stage, movie screen, lighting, sound, music and tutoring rooms, large kitchen, wellness studio, and more.
Also over the first two decades, more youth workers were hired to fill the roles representing high school and middle school youth programming, CROYA’s extensive community service initiatives, peer mentoring and training, and counseling. Todd Nahigian, CROYA’s current director, joined the agency in 1995 as the high school youth worker, and through his 25 years of service and dedication, has gained the experience, respect, and trust of both youth and adults.
“The founders who had this dream 40 years ago never could have thought this is where we’d be today,” says Nahigian. “It’s a huge support system for youth and the community.”
Kamy Daddono took on the leadership as director of CROYA after starting as a staff member in 1986. She led CROYA through facility and staff expansion, developed strong relationships with public leaders and school administration, saw the agency through its Student Union campaign and addition, and continued to develop the CROYA Process.
As CROYA grew and evolved, it developed youth executive committees at both the high school and middle school levels, who are elected by their peers. In addition to teaching them leadership skills, they do real committee work—brainstorming, organizing, and encouraging other teens to join new
initiatives and programs.
Activities and programs took hold, and expanded over time. This includes weekly youth meetings for both middle and high school students, a robust community service program, peer training and peer mentoring, biannual retreats to Wisconsin, dances, barbecues; end-of- and beginning-of-year activities to welcome newcomers and send off graduates; and so much more. The annual Recognition Dinner is a rite of passage for many adults and teens that have been substantially involved.
Music has always been a key component in attracting youth passionate about making music. Battle of the Bands, Summer Jams, Activator Music Academy, and other musicrelated programs evolved and expanded. Annual events like the Donut Bowl and Donut Cup, where teens play flag football or floor hockey with the local police officers, became popular and important to keeping communication open.
Naturally, programs have come and gone as the teen world and world-at-large changes. Since the expansion with the Student Union, CROYA has become a drop-in center for teens after school five days per week between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. (the CROYA van transports students from Lake Bluff Middle School on those days.); and during the summer, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The essence of CROYA remains strong
as it continues to grow organically into its fifth decade with teens as the impetus for that growth. While it is impossible to cover the breadth and depth of CROYA’s work and programming in this brief article, it is important to appreciate this community gem that we are so fortunate to have serving the communities youth in grades 7 through 12.
“CROYA is so central to what my life has been during high school,” Banta says. “”I’ve met some of the most important people in my life. I would have been on a different trajectory without CROYA. It taught me about my community and broadened my horizons; I found my place in it, and my voice in it.”
Hotchkiss sums it up aptly: “CROYA works because it is run by youth. We can never lose sight of that.”

VASER 4D HI-DEFINITION
LIPOSCULPTURE PLUS RENUVION
WORDS BY STEVEN BLOCH, M.D.
Liposuction has been around for close to thirty years. It continues to be refined and improved. Two years ago I discussed high-definition liposculpture. Since that time I’ve performed hundreds of procedures. Results have been excellent with significant improvement over past procedures. It has become a true art form where the underlying anatomy is contoured, sculpted, and enhanced. Like every procedure over time, one realizes that there are some limitations.
The single biggest limitation in achieving the desired result is the status of the overlying skin; more specifically, the elasticity of the skin. In the younger patient where the skin tone is better, results are more predictable and consistent. In the older patient, if there is
significant laxity of skin the procedure may be combined with skin reduction or excision. It’s that middle group that presents the most challenge. Obviously, most patients want the best results with the least invasive procedure. For this group, I’m now combining Vaser Hi-Definition Liposculpture to contour and sculpt the body with a minimally invasive treatment called Renuvion.
Renuvion is a cosmetic technology combining the unique properties of the helium plasma with a proprietary form of radiofrequency energy. The trick is always to sufficiently heat up the deeper tissues to promote collagen tightening and elasticity without burning the overlying skin. Renuvion has a very shallow depth of penetration. It has a dual thermal effect where it provides unique heating with nearinstantaneous tissue cooling. The delivery of energy beneath the skin and through the helium plasma allows 360-degree energy application to all desired tissues in the subdermal space. The fibroseptal network beneath the skin can be effectively heated to promote contraction and tightening of the overlying skin. The full effect of this treatment can take up to 6 months to see.
So basically tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated and Vaser ultrasound is introduced to emulsify the fat. Liposuction is performed if need be, and the Renuvion is introduced to promote skin tightening.
To see if you are a candidate for this procedure, a consultation and an exam is required. As with any surgical procedure, risks and possible complications will be discussed.
