Making the decision to sell or buy a home is one of the biggest decisions a family can make, and we could not have made a better decision than to work with Cory. From day one, Cory guided us through our decision making with not only comprehensive market data, but also his personal and extensive knowledge of the community and potential buyers. Throughout the selling process, we relied on Cory’s experience and guidance. He was always incredibly responsive, making what can be a stressful process so much easier. He wasn’t just with us every step of the way, he was was always one step ahead. Great agent, and great choice. -Chris & Victoria Romano

NEWS THE GREAT OUTDOORS

From PG 1

BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again,” Dorothy famously says in The Wizard of Oz, “I’ll find it in my own backyard.” As residents—and potential residents—of the North Shore have learned over the past three years, Dorothy isn’t wrong. Home has truly become where the heart is, as couples and families seek more outdoor space to roam and to entertain on their own private properties. Three years ago, North Shore real estate brokers would tell you they couldn’t sell a house with a pool. Now they can’t sell a house without one. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. With wait times nearly three years to have a pool put in (if you happen to have the room), well-appointed outdoor spaces on the North Shore are at a

premium. “Even though we live in an area where we experience all four seasons, people are starting to realize that their outdoor space is an extension of their homes,” says Carly Jones, a real estate broker with Engel & Völkers in

Winnetka. “This means that it needs to be functional and feel almost like an extra room.” Jones says more people are looking for beautiful patios, outdoor kitchens, firepits, and even just green space where their families can run around. In other words, the great, allAmerican backyard is being quickly replaced

by high-tech, fully "furnished," outdoor living spaces. “People want to be able to entertain in their outdoor space. This means having a place for a dining table, and bonus points if it is covered so you can still enjoy it in the rain,” Jones says. “They also want spaces where their friends and family can gather, whether that is around a swimming pool or a firepit.” More people realize that your outdoor space can be used most of the year and not just in the summer. Dining spaces with a heater make outside dinners possible in early spring, and while buyers want outdoor spaces that allow for activity, they also want to be able to sit back and relax. Jones says many people just want an ideal space to enjoy a cup

of coffee in the morning without interruption. For sellers, a well-accoutered outdoor space can increase their bottom lines. “Outdoor space is a huge value-add to homes. People underestimate how much it costs to put in a swimming pool, put down a large patio, build a gas fire pit, or build an outdoor kitchen,” Jones says. “To have those things already done and start enjoying them right away is a huge advantage. Just as having an updated kitchen is extremely desirable to buyers, so is having a large, functional outdoor space.” Connie Dornan, a broker with @properties in Glenview, says priorities for how green Continues on PG 12

NEWS THE GREAT OUTDOORS

From PG 10

spaces are utilized by homeowners have shifted over the past couple of years. “Outdoor living has become a top priority for many of my clients since the pandemic began,” Dornan says. “Pre-pandemic, it was more about having a large green space but now tastes have shifted, and buyers are seeking more flexibility in the use of that outdoor area. For many, it’s an extension of their living room and they are purchasing outdoor TVs and theater systems.” What buyers are seeking is largely dependent on their lifestyle, Dornan says. For the sports and exercise enthusiasts, they are looking for basketball and tennis courts, but for the entertainers, it’s more about outdoor kitchens, cooking, gardening, exterior lighting, fireplaces, gazebos, and pergolas. “Homes that have a ‘showcase’ outdoor living space sell in record time and are one of the main drivers for buyers,” says Dornan. “Most cannot imagine what can be done until they see it and once they do, they want it.” “Since COVID-19, the demand for outdoor space has increased tremendously as more and more buyers are entertaining at home and, if they have children, being able to run free has dramatically been enhanced,” says Gloria Matlin, a broker with Compass in Glencoe. “Many more buyers are looking for pools, hot tubs, and general indoor/outdoor living. In prior years, pools had become

gorgeous upper bracket home in Lake Forest with both a pool and tennis court and the buyers were thrilled that those amenities were there,” Roth says. “The pool was a must-have for them and the tennis court was ‘icing on the cake’. I'm also working with a number of younger buyers coming from the city and all of them want sizable yards in which they can entertain or just live as a family in case there's another lockdown.” Francie Pinkwater, a broker with Engel & Völkers in Winnetka, says she could sense early on in the pandemic that outdoor spaces were going to be a priority for new buyers. “I think the demand for outdoor space started with COVID. I saw people erecting all kinds of outdoor areas, tents, firepits, hot tubs, heat lamps—all needed for outdoor dining and entertaining,” Pinkwater says. “Now that the pandemic is somewhat coming to an end, people are used to the outdoor entertainment areas. I have seen more firepits in the last few years than ever before, and they are here to stay.” Pool cabanas have become a popular amenity as more families are opting for staycations and want to bring a resort-like feel to their outdoor spaces, says Cory Albiani, a broker with @properties in Highland Park. “People are no longer seeing home as just a place to live, but a place to play,” Albiani says. “They’re putting in outdoor kitchens and amenities such as pickleball courts. I know a family that put in a pool and cabana area and

an outdoor kitchen for a house that wasn’t that large on a one-acre lot, but they wanted to make that investment.” For Laurie Field, a broker with Engel & Völkers in Winnetka, the demand for outdoor space is partly rooted in human nature. “Outdoor space is high on everyone's wish list now, where it was

only on some buyers' wish lists in the past,” Field says. “The combination of how we value outdoor space differently since COVID and recent research that shows that time outside can make you happier and healthier leads me to believe the desire for outdoor space is here to stay. “Outdoor space has become an extension of the home and people are finding fulfilling and fun ways to use it.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

FRANCO FILES CELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE CHICAGO, “THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS FRENCH,” WITH HIGHLAND PARK RESIDENT AND LIFELONG FRANCOPHILE BETSEY PINKERT. BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Highland Park’s Betsey Pinkert first heard French at 4 years old in ballet class, and it was a coup de foudre, a love-at-first-sight-like attraction to the sound of the language that would inspire the rest of her life. She’d later convince her parents to send her to France for her summers during high school, where she studied French and enrolled at the Alliance Française for immersion. What she didn’t realize at the time is that years later, in 1974, she’d join the Chicago chapter of the Alliance Française and spend the next 48 years serving in a variety of prominent roles—from Director of French Programs and President of the Woman’s Board to tour leader of the historic Voyage Extraordinaire (a weeklong trip to Paris for members of the Board of Directors) and Vice President of the Board of Directors. “I had been teaching French at Evanston High School and the Latin School of Chicago but left when I became pregnant,” says Pinkert. “I knew I had to do something to maintain my French, and the Alliance was in my neighborhood. I walked through those doors and found a community of like-minded people and, in a sense, I never walked out.” Founded in 1897, the Alliance Française de Chicago is a 125-year-old nonprofit organization that is part of an international network of over 800 Alliance cultural centers worldwide. With a mission to promote exchange, understanding, and friendship between Americans and all French-speaking people, the Alliance is Chicago’s epicenter of French language and cultures. Dubbed “the place for all things French,” the Alliance offers more than 60 cultural events a year, all aimed to underline Chicago’s love affair with French culture. Think programming ranging from an online series on the Grands Châteaux of the Loire and Ile de France to a screening of The Last Metro with special guests Gérard Depardieu and Jeanne Gang, who presented in French about her award-winning architecture. The Alliance has hosted other notable guests in Chicago, like Pierre Balmain, Hubert de Givenchy, Sean Connery, and even Audrey Hepburn. And the school of the Alliance also offers more than 70 classes every eight weeks for both kids and adults on topics ranging from Marcel Proust to Netflix’s Emily in Paris series. “We offer wine tastings, cooking classes, French language classes, film series, book clubs, and even yoga classes,” says Pinkert. “When I first started, the audience was made up of people who were fluent in French but then the decision was made to open the Alliance to the city of Chicago. Now, we truly have something

for everyone.” Many events are hosted in the Brown Médiathèque, the largest privately-owned French library in the Midwest with over 18,000 items. Others are in the salon and board room, designed by École Boulle in Paris. The link between the Alliance’s two buildings is inspired by La Maison de Verre, the Art Deco masterpiece in Paris. The Alliance annually awards a McCormick Award for Excellence scholarship—established

in the memory of Chicago philanthropist Roger McCormick—to two laureates who are chosen from among several finalists who earned top scores on the National French Context exam. Available to students in the Chicago and North Shore areas, the scholarship is one committed to the cultural exchange between France and the United States, with recipients receiving a trip to Paris for the month of July during which time they live in the heart of the

city and study at the Sorbonne. Separate from the scholarship program, the Alliance has since 1998 partnered with Chicago Public Schools to offer 60 motivated students from underserved neighborhoods a two-year after- school enrichment and immersion program. Ninety percent of the participating students go onto college, often as the first in their family to do so, and students have been accepted at institutions like Harvard and MIT. “At the end of the program, students are eligible for a trip to France the summer after their graduation,” says Pinkert. “We hope it inspires them to continue learning French throughout their college careers.” On May 7, the Alliance will celebrate its 125th anniversary at its biennial gala, 125 Le Bal, hosted at the Four Seasons Chicago by the Alliance Française de Chicago Woman’s Board. Co-chairs Elisabeth Adams and Gail Hoffman will bring the allure of Francophone culture into the spotlight with sumptuous Frenchinspired cuisine and French wines, along with music, dancing, and a live auction. The goal? To raise a minimum of $400,000 as key operating funds for education, language immersion programs for high school students from Chicago’s core neighborhoods, and cultural offerings at the Alliance. “Le Bal will have all the earmarks of an Alliance Française gala, which means it will have superb gourmet food, incredible wine, and be beyond elegant, as all French galas are,” says Pinkert. The benefit will honor Catharine Hamilton in recognition of her many years of dedication to French culture and the Alliance, and the Prix de l’Alliance Française de Chicago will be awarded to long-time champion of the Alliance, Myriam Bransfield. Pinkert herself was decorated by the French government at the recommendation of President Macron of France in 2019 as a Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite for her years of promotion of the French language and culture. She calls it “one of the most memorable days” of her life. As the Alliance celebrates its anniversary, it has plans to cultivate its next generation of leaders through a new professionals group, comprised of young leaders throughout the Chicagoland area, many of whom have benefitted from Alliance programming in the past. The professionals group will kick off in advance of the gala. “As I look back on these years, I can see the incredible transformation and evolution of the Alliance as a cultural resource in the city,” says Pinkert. “My admiration only continues to grow.” For more information about Alliance Française de Chicago and the gala, visit af-chicago.org. WILD RAMP RISOTTO WITH SPRING ASPARAGUS BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Last year, we planted our first crop of asparagus and were delighted to see the spears shoot up from the earth at the same time the woods filled with ramps— those mild and garlicky wild onions that inspired Native Americans to give Chicago its name. I just had to pair the asparagus and ramps together in a recipe. Having done a book, Risotto & Beyond (Rizzoli), featuring 100 Italian rice recipes that I tested and wrote about for Chef John Coletta, risotto seemed the perfect transport. Note: For a little added earthiness, you can add a handful of sauteed mushrooms to the mix when you stir in the ramps and asparagus.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE VEGETABLES:

• 1 bunch fresh ramps, roots discarded, leaves and pink stems chopped to make 2 cups; bulbs chopped separately to make ¼ cup • 1 bunch fresh asparagus, tough ends discarded, tips and stalks cut into 1 ½ inch pieces FOR THE RISOTTO:

• 6 cups good quality low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling • ¼ cup of the chopped ramp bulbs (from above) • ½ tsp finely ground sea salt, plus more as needed • ½ tsp finely ground black pepper, plus more as needed • 1 ¼ cups Carnaroli or Arborio rice • 1/3 cup dry white wine • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter • 2 oz. freshly and finely grated Parmigiano Reggiano, to make ¾ cup

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

METHOD MAKE THE RISOTTO: In a small

skillet, lightly sauté the ramp leaves and stems in a teaspoon of olive oil until just tender. Set aside. In a heavy-bottomed sauce pot over medium heat, bring the broth to a boil. Reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer. In a heavy-bottomed skillet with 3-inch depth, warm olive oil over low heat. Add the ¼ cup chopped ramp bulbs. Stir, cooking until soft and translucent, but not browned. Add the rice and stir for 2 minutes. Add white wine and stir until wine has completely evaporated. Ladle ½ cup of the hot broth into the rice and stir until the broth has reduced by two thirds. Add another ladleful or broth, stirring again

24

until reduced by two thirds. Repeat this process until most of the broth has been absorbed by the rice, and the rice is tender but not mushy, with a creamy consistency. You may have a little bit of broth left. Remove the risotto from the heat. Cover. Lightly steam the asparagus in microwave with 2 Tbsp water for a scant two minutes until bright green and crisp-tender. Drain water. Add butter and grated parmesan to risotto. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in the reserved ramp leaves and stems; stir in the asparagus. Spoon all into a serving dish and drizzle lightly with a bit more extra virgin olive oil. Serve.

HOMING IN ON A CLASSICAL APPROACH CLASSICAL CONSORTIUM ACADEMY FOUNDER JENNIFER BURNS NOTICED A NEED AMONG HOME-SCHOOLED FAMILIES 16 YEARS AGO AND DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT IN BARRINGTON. SHE PLANS TO OPEN A CCA EAST CAMPUS ON THE NORTH SHORE THIS FALL. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Jennifer Burns loved working for a small marketing consulting firm in Evanston nearly 20 years ago. The Fortini-Campbell Company’s clients were large corporations, Hewlett-Packard among them, and Burns—with a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from Northwestern University—thoroughly enjoyed helping clients understand their consumers’ needs. Developing new products would follow. “Figuring out what makes consumers tick was an exciting part of my job,” Burns says. “Everything I did, while working there for one of my Northwestern professors, was a delight.” But another love, her first child, Ryan, made Burns walk away from her cherished senior consultant position. “I had a heart-to-heart conversation with my husband (David) when Ryan was 4,” Burns, now 50 and a Kildeer resident, recalls. “I wanted to be home with Ryan. He was my No. 1 priority.” She would later homeschool Ryan and the couple’s other two children, Bradley and Nicholas, who was adopted 10 years ago. Burns put her marketing acumen to good use again in 2004, when she launched H.E.A.R.T. (Homeschool Enrichment Achieved Respectively Together), a nine-month, weekly enrichment program for students that employs passionate, Christian instructors in the areas of art, science, Spanish, physical education, music, and more. Based in the Village Church of Barrington, H.E.A.R.T. provides students with all the “extras” that round out the education parents provide at home. “The homeschool community in Barrington was tiny at the time,” Burns says. “But I felt there was a need for a product that would meet the needs of such a community. So I developed one. “There I was, in another phase in my life, doing some of the things I did when I was working at FortiniCampbell.” In early 2005 Burns’ wheels in her head started to near a Formula One Grand Prix speed. A vision for something bigger for homeschoolers (kindergarten through 12th grade) formed, and in 2006 Classical Consortium Academy (CCA) opened its doors at the Village Church of Barrington and introduced students to creative learning through classical methods and subjects.

26

Founder Burns serves as head of school and teaches Critical Thinking, Formal Logic, Classical Rhetoric, and Fundamentals in Professionalism. CCA is a classical, Christian hybrid school that combines the expertise and accountability of a rigorous classical school and the flexibility and nurturing of homeschooling. A total of 180 students have attended CCA at least once a week (some attended on Mondays and Wednesdays) this academic year since August 2021, with several churches and denominations represented in the student body; 212 students, Burns notes, have applied for enrollment in the 2022-2023 academic year. And Burns plans to open a CCA East campus

on the North Shore—at a site to be determined— this fall. CCA’s site (classicalconsortiumacademy.org) points out the irony of the academy’s hall-

I adore being in the classroom with our amazing CCA students and teaching them how to think logically and critically about the world around them.

Jennifer Burns

mark—the best way to prepare students for the ever-changing world is by following an ancient philosophy of education. Classical education, it continues, believes that by teaching students the grammar or foundation of all subjects, guiding them how to think about those subjects (like logicians, mathematicians, scientists, artists, and authors) and coaching them on how to articulate themselves well orally and in writing, students will develop the fortitude and tools to handle the complexities of life. “The overall philosophy of Classical Consortium Academy is that kids are capable, so much more capable, than what the world thinks they can achieve,” Burns says. “Our kids are certainly doing some heavy lifting, intellectually. They have the downtime needed to thoroughly read Dante’s Inferno and The Federalist Papers. Our seventh-graders are reading college-level textbooks, and our juniors in high school are presenting 30-page theses before panels. That level of work, time and time again, produces really good kids. “I adore,” she states on the academy’s site, “being in the classroom with our amazing CCA students and teaching them how to think logically and critically about the world

around them.” If it sounds as if Burns has found her purpose in life, it’s because she has. Two Bible verses (Galatians 6: 9-10), she says, encapsulate her calling: “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Burns grew up in Palatine and Buffalo Grove and, while living in Long Grove, attended Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. The daughter of John (who adopted Jennifer when she was 14 and now lives in Barrington Hills) and the late Debbie, Jennifer graduated in 1989 from what now is a school with a sprawling campus and an enrollment of nearly 4,300. “Stevenson had only one building when I went there,” Burns says, adding she was a painfully shy high school student. Debbie was a dynamic matriarch, with a vivacious personality. “A lovely person,” Burns sums. John? “Selfless,” Burns says. “What he did, taking on someone else’s daughter like he did … how wonderful is that?” Burns shed layers of shyness at the University of Kansas by “blossoming and getting involved in everything,” including the Panhellenic Council, for which she served as vice president. “UK students who knew me at Stevenson didn’t even recognize me,” says Burns, who started out as a speech pathology major and ended up as an advertising major. An avid learner since birth, Burns likes to walk and listen to audio books and podcasts in her free time. She’s also one of the most notable soccer moms in Lake County. Son Nicholas, a 13-year-old central defensive midfielder, was selected to train under Major League Soccer coaches at FC Cincinnati Academy. That put him on a professional track. “David and I have grown to love and appreciate soccer, from the team aspect to the sport’s dynamic nature to the players’ ability to think on their feet,” Burns says. “It’s a complex and elegant sport.” CCA, meanwhile, is a unique and old-school education alternative. “We’re happy to provide Christian families with an education they want, and we’re more than pleased to have established a place that has a good reputation,” Burns says. “We’re cultivating a love of wisdom and learning in our students. “This has been such a blessing for me, being able to do this.” Classical Consortium Academy is located at Village Church of Barrington,1600 East Main Street.
