“We just installed all new windows at our house and we love them! Before we made our decision we went to the manufacturer’s plant to see how the windows are made. We were concerned at first because Russ’s price was more than half of his competitors quoted price. After our tour we were very comfortable with our decision. Installation day was quick and painless. Our house was left in great condition. I highly recommend this company!”

EDITOR’S NOTE

It’s December, let’s light it up! The end of the year is always a time of reflection. I’ve been doing a lot of that lately, much of it in deep gratitude for our communities and appreciation for all the talented people who live among us and are willing to share their stories. When I was in college, I set the intention to be an editor in chief.

I worked hard in New York and Chicago, building skills and relationships. “Midwest nice” is real and probably doomed me in the Big Apple, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Being editor of Hinsdale Living is the honor of a lifetime and this issue is a wonderful example of why I feel so proud and passionate to help deliver this beautiful gift each month.

We have trio of incredible features. Cindy Crawford visited the CD Peacock Mansion at Oakbrook Center to open the OMEGA boutique. It was a blast to interview her about her time as Brand Ambassador AND to chat off the record about all the stores and boutiques from the 1980s and what’s in their place now. She is as smart, charming, and beautiful as everyone imagines, just a delightful human being. Check out our conversation in Making Time with Cindy Crawford

Primary Care, Personalized

At Rush Concierge Medicine, we take your health care personally.

We understand that your health and well-being affect every aspect of your life. We will work with you to prioritize your health by focusing on your wellness goals. Whether you want to stay active, better manage a chronic condition, or seek a more personalized health care experience, we are by your side. Rush Concierge Medicine is a membership-based primary care practice that focuses on highly personalized, accessible care. Our clinic is conveniently located in downtown Hinsdale.

As a member, you’ll have a personal physician and nurse navigator as your partners in every aspect of your health. Your team is always a simple call, email or text away — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With same- or next-day appointments available, they’ll prioritize your concerns quickly.

“With concierge medicine, you have access to your doctor and nurse any time, and we really serve as your quarterback in care,” says Luan Elezi, MD, family medicine physician with Rush Concierge Medicine. “Our goal is to help you open up and discuss your health concerns so we can establish an open relationship and true partnership.”

Better Access, More Time

To build this partnership, Rush Concierge Medicine is tackling two of the biggest challenges in health care: difficulty accessing care and not having enough time with your doctor.

“Our patients are in the office for 90 minutes to two hours for their comprehensive physical,” says Marie Runyan, RN, BSN, concierge nurse navigator. “Many concerns come out when you have more time together, so that helps us really get to know you.”

The goal of breaking down these time and access barriers is to foster a strong partnership between you and your care team — which can ultimately help improve your overall health and wellness.

“Concierge medicine is more personalized and convenient,” Runyan says. “For example, if you wake up not feeling well, we’ll get you in right away. You’ll see your physician who knows you, your health history, your medications and your background.

Concierge medicine also makes it easier to manage the complexities of health care. “We will help you navigate everything from annual wellness exams to chronic illnesses and beyond,” Runyan says. “Knowing we’re there as your partner takes the pressure off of you to juggle it all.”

Investing In Your Health

A lot of people find their way to concierge medicine when they are ready and able to invest in their health. “Our goal is to optimize your health and focus on prevention so we can help you be more proactive with your health rather than reactive,” says Elezi.

To do this, Rush Concierge Medicine provides recommended screening and prevention testing specific to your needs. Your care team will work with you to determine if a deeper dive into different aspects of your health would be helpful based on your history and risk factors.

“Many of our patients are prioritizing their health, and they come to us looking for ways to prolong their life through prevention,” Elezi says. “By offering much more comprehensive testing, we can do more proactive disease prevention because we have more data to guide it.”

Concierge medicine can also be a game changer if you’re managing chronic conditions. Your concierge medicine team will help you coordinate appointments with your specialists and navigate the system, ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks.

“When you’re seeing five different specialists, there’s so much information, and there can be so much disconnect between providers,” Elezi says. “We know exactly who you see, all your medications, all your concerns, and all your appointments. That allows us to collaborate with your specialists, advocate for you and make sure everyone is on the same page.”

Become a Member

If you’re interested in becoming a member of Rush Concierge Medicine, you can schedule a complimentary meet-and-greet with the concierge medicine team to get a feel for the practice and providers.

To schedule a meet-and-greet or to learn more about Rush Concierge Medicine, visit rush.edu/concierge-medicine or call (630) 724-1680. Rush Concierge Medicine is located at 32 E. 1st St. in Hinsdale.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

ELIZABETH DZIEDZIC'S

story began in Fairborn, Ohio, near Dayton’s Wright Patterson Air Force Base where she grew up in a close-knit subdivision amid a lively and social neighborhood of U.S. and British Air Force families. This unique community offered a mix of traditions and sparked her interest in traveling, leading to a trip around the world in 2000.

Summers saw her lifeguarding from dawn to dusk, while annual family vacations took her to NYC, the Jersey Shore and Nantucket. After Miami University, she launched a marketing career, leading a team in the 401(k) division at Fidelity Investments in Cincinnati and Dallas. She married Tom in a New York City destination wedding and, after 22 years in the working world, retired to welcome their daughter, Anna Claire in 2009.

Hinsdale became their home in 2012 after six months in corporate housing on State Street. Their Hinsdale decision was influenced by close friends whom they visited when they were engaged in 2005, who described Hinsdale as a modern-day Mayberry. Anna Claire was two years old when they moved. She is now a sophomore at Benet Academy. Their mini bernedoodle, Kazzie, joined the family in 2021.

Elizabeth’s time as a stay-at-home mom has been enriched by various volunteer fundraising roles including Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club, St. Isaac Jogues and National Charity League. More recently, much of her focus has been relocating and caring for her mom, who has advanced vascular dementia. She initiated a support group at her mom’s senior living facility, and she looks forward to helping shape a new program at The Community House for supporting the aging parent process.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

Do you have a mantra? My friends tease me about my endless quips, but the standout is, “the best friendships start with the phrase ‘me too.’” Meaning during your first conversation, you quickly find a commonality. I met some of my closest Hinsdale friends bonding over shared stories of our childrens’ activities. Another favorite? Assemble your own personal board of directors for life’s decisions, big or small. On your reading stack? Newspaper articles my husband Tom clips for me. What organizations do you support? We attend several fundraising events each year, but most of my volunteer time is with Anna Claire’s school, National Charity League, and I look forward to helping The Community House this winter. What’s your signature entertaining style? A few friends over for a quick afternoon pickme-up before school pick-up from 1pm - 3pm with fun music, Toni’s sweet treats and bubbly. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? Daily visits to my mom at Birches memory care remind me to live fully. They've inspired my “nursing home prevention kit”— learning new things (most recently Mahjong!), boosting strength, taking hormone replacement therapy, and staying social with regular friend dates. Music you love? Don’t hand me the AUX cable - I am not good with music but love to dance to trendy songs. Favorite holiday/winter traditions? On Christmas day, we travel to NYC every year to soak in the spirit of the holiday at our wedding day hotel and spend time with our extended family.

WHEN IN TOWN WHEN IN THE COUNTRY

What’s your go-to outfit? Black turtleneck, drapey scarf, wide leg jeans and sneakers. Usually all purchased at TJ Maxx. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? Tucked in my purse is a cherished angel medallion, a gift when my dad passed away in 2005. It reminds me of his life's mantra, "The magic never stops!” The phrase he’d exclaim during big boisterous events or marvel at in awe of small happy moments. Where do they know you by Il Mio bar area where Tom and I steal away when Anna Favorite work out? Three spots are on rotation: Reformer Village Pilates, Energie Pilates, and Spark FitDo you have a favorite memory of living in the The days I met my ‘me toos’! Favorite festival or special event? It is a tie between two events: The Alzheimer's Association RIta Hayworth Gala and The Sparkle of Hope luncheon benefiting Together

If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would you say? Nestled just a 22 minute express train ride from Chicago, Hinsdale offers the perfect blend of small-town charm and big-city amenities. Stroll through our picturesque downtown, brimming with boutique shops, a variety of restaurants, pretty parks and grand homes.

Do you wear any outfits or accessories that look like too much day to day but are perfect for the city? Leopard print coat. What’s in your bag? Angel medallion. View that never gets old? The walls of RL restaurant. Shop?

P.O.S.H on State Street. Best quick bite or hidden gem? The Aster Hall Bar & Study on Level 6 of the 900 Michigan Shops is a quick bite and a hidden gem. You can order anything from the Level 5 food hall, savor it with a drink and lake views, and even take your wine to any of the shops. Quite the treat! Do you have a favorite museum? The Art Institute Modern Wing and, while not a museum, we recently enjoyed a day art gallery hopping in West Town. What is your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? About Last Night.

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF BOHEMIANS

The magical paintings of Chicago Surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie are becoming some of the hottest pieces in the art world.

Gertrude Abercrombie is having a long overdue moment. After decades of being one of the Chicago art world’s best kept secrets, Abercrombie is receiving the notoriety that was unfairly denied her for so long. In recent years, Abercrombie has had major solo exhibitions at KARMA gallery in New York, Illinois State Museum in Springfield, and the Elmhurst Art Museum and is set to have a major retrospective open at the prestigious Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh in January, then traveling to the Colby College Museum of Waterville, Maine.

But it’s not just the museums that are taking notice. In the last five years, prices for works by Abercrombie have skyrocketed, with auction records falling almost as quickly as they can be set. In 2022, Freeman’s | Hindman brought a single-owner collection of 21 Abercrombie works to auction, and the collection more than doubled its presale estimate, selling for a combined $2.8 million. Just three months later, Freeman’s | Hindman broke the world auction record for Abercrombie, selling a typically surreal painting of a solitary woman, a barren landscape, a white horse, and a crescent moon for $437,500.

That record didn’t even last two full years as Freeman’s | Hindman once again broke this record in September of this year with the sale of The Magician in its September Post War and Contemporary Art auction for $469,900. The delightfully whimsical oil on

canvas features a woman levitating above a sleek black chaise lounge, reminiscent of one from Abercrombie’s apartment. The scene is set against a backdrop of an austere interior, complete with a vibrant green rug and a black cat seemingly raising its paw to conjure the act of levitation—a testament to Abercrombie’s sharp wit and imaginative vision.

Abercrombie was born to travelling opera singers in 1909, which made her early years a whirlwind of travels and adventure before the family finally settled in Hyde Park in 1916. Her fine art career got off to a humble start, drawing illustrations for Mesirow Department Store and Sears advertisements. By the 1930s, though, she had become a full-time artist and a fixture of Chicago’s vibrant jazz scene, becoming fast friends with Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, and Dizzy Gillespie, who played at her wedding.

Abercrombie was so beloved in these circles that she became known as “the queen of bohemian artists.” Yet her artwork carries an almost overwhelming sense of loneliness and self-loathing. It’s remarkable that an artist who felt so unloved and unlovely despite her popularity and a circle of close, loving friends was able to transform these feelings into an art of power, beauty, and psychological truth that continues to speak to all those who have the privilege to see it.

NAVIGATING DIVORCE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Managing the emotional complexities of divorce during the holiday season requires thoughtful planning and self-care, but it also offers a chance to forge new traditions and strengthen family bonds.

The holiday season can be emotionally intense for anyone, but for individuals going through a divorce, it presents unique challenges. From handling new family dynamics to managing shared responsibilities and expectations, the holidays often amplify emotions, logistical hurdles, and family drama. However, with careful planning and a focus on self-care, those going through a divorce can find ways to create meaningful and manageable holiday experiences for them and their families.

EMOTIONAL STRAIN AND RESILIENCE

For adults and children in the midst of a divorce, the holidays can magnify feelings of loss, loneliness, and stress. This is often due to traditions being disrupted or family gatherings feeling different than usual. Encourage your family to acknowledge these feelings, but also to look at the holidays as an opportunity to create new traditions that might even be more fun. This takes a lot of planning ahead, but the planning will pay off with a long-term benefit to your family.

TIPS FOR PARENTS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

Don’t just take care of everyone else. Practice self-care through journaling, meditation, and talking to a therapist. Schedule a massage or a long walk so that you are centered and able to be present for your family. Spend time with supportive friends and family who provide comfort and encouragement. Avoid situations or gatherings that may trigger conflict or stress. Try to rise above the conflict.

MANAGING CO-PARENTING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

For divorcing parents, co-parenting during the holidays can bring a set of logistical challenges. Developing a holiday schedule that serves the best interests of the children and respects each parent's needs and extended families requires clear, proactive communication. Courts often encourage parents to develop holiday arrangements in advance, keeping the children’s needs front and center. Christmas happens every year at the same time, it is not an emergency.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS AND BUDGETING

Divorce often brings financial strain, which can be heightened during the holiday season with gift-giving, travel, and special events. It’s important for clients to be mindful of their budgets and prioritize what truly matters to them, avoiding unnecessary debt or financial pressure. Set boundaries around gift giving to prevent competition and focus on meaningful experiences.

While the holidays can be challenging for those going through a divorce, they can also provide an opportunity to redefine personal traditions, strengthen family ties, and focus on what truly matters. By setting realistic expectations, managing co-parenting responsibilities with respect, and prioritizing emotional health, individuals can find ways to make the holiday season more manageable and meaningful.

The style icon shares her appreciation for design, innovation, and the joy of a daughter realizing her mom has an incredible watch collection.

An extra ripple of excitement filled the air as the sun set over The CD Peacock Mansion at Oakbrook Center when, among the beautiful people sliding out of sleek supercars, one extraordinarily gorgeous woman stopped on the red carpet, OMEGA Ambassador Cindy Crawford.

Once inside, Cindy, OMEGA US Brand President Arnaud Michon, CD Peacock Vice Chairman, Steve Holtzman, and Vice President of Client Engagement and Experience, Qi Holtzman, greeted those gathered from under boughs of blossoms.

Michon joked with the crowd that long before the lacquer walls and bronze floor inlay of this soaring jewel box were crafted, Steve Holtzman saw what could be. “We came when this was a restaurant and it was hard to imagine that one day we’d be here in this beautiful place, but Steve had the vision,” he said.

Inspired by lenticular cloud formations, the one-of-a-kind modern structure incorporates a serpentine glass facade that gives way to ample sun-drenched interiors featuring organic forms, custom furnishings, and a heightened experiential environment. The Mansion offers the world’s finest luxury jewelry and watches, including the dedicated OMEGA boutique filled with the most beautiful and innovative collections from the brand.

As the espresso martinis flowed and collectors browsed, Cindy graciously sat with us for a few minutes to talk timeless style and enduring friendships.

As the longest standing Brand Ambassador for Omega what qualities and principles do you share with the brand that keeps your relationship so strong?

We both care about time, but in the literal sense, like, I’m very punctual, and Swiss companies appreciate that. There’s also a timelessness that is a part of OMEGA’s brand values and hopefully part of mine. One of the things I really appreciate about OMEGA is the history and all the cool things they’ve been a part of. And I think fashion, as well. Now more than ever, a watch has to offer more than time because no one needs to wear a watch to tell time so a great watch has to have a fashion or style aspect to it.

You've been photographed in multiple campaigns wearing The Constellation. How do you see this collection worn?

The thing I love about The Constellation, especially in the smaller size, is that it’s like a piece of jewelry. I like this watch because it does feel like a bracelet. Within OMEGA The Constellation was known as “Cindy’s choice” for many years.

You've seen the world throughout your illustrious career. What makes returning to your Midwestern roots feel special after all these years?

On this visit, it was a treat walk around Oakbrook Center and see how all the stores have changed. When I stay in Chicago, I love walking around Michigan Avenue or along Lake Michigan. It’s a wonderful thing about Chicago that I think is underrated is that you’re in a city and you can walk along a beautiful lake.

When you're back in the Chicagoland area, what are your favorite things to do?

I always try to have dinner with my high school friends. On a recent visit, my friend Chris Chelios picked us up in his boat after

dinner at RPM Seafood and took us along the Chicago River and out onto Lake Michigan. It was the perfect night, and my Illinois friends know hockey, so they appreciated having a hall-of-famer take us out maybe more than my LA friends would.

Do you share the same taste in accessories like jewelry and watches with your daughter and fellow brand ambassador Kaia Gerber? Are there any pieces that you both love to wear?

Like most daughters she wants to have her own style and her own taste, but I do see some similarities. I often wear gold hoops and that’s what she wanted for her birthday. She recently did a red carpet and borrowed some of my jewelry including one of my vintage OMEGA watches. It’s really fun to have a daughter to share that stuff with and she’s starting to appreciate what I have.

We feel so lucky to have this incredible family-owned fine jewelry and watch store in our neighborhood. How does this OMEGA shop in The CD Peacock Mansion compare to others?

This store has the nicest bathroom I’ve ever been in. I wanted to do a whole photo shoot in there. What’s cool about this store is the history and it’s beautiful. Every detail, from the inlay floor to the walls and chandeliers, it’s like the store itself is covered in jewelry. Most OMEGA stores are standalone, so they’re smaller. For OMEGA to be in this beautiful store makes it a great place to shop for watches.

SWEET STYLE

Sweet William celebrates 35 years of being Hinsdale’s cornerstone of fashion

WORDS

For 35 years, Sweet William has woven itself into the hearts of the most stylish women from the Western Suburbs and beyond, becoming a cherished destination for fashion aficionados seeking exceptional service.

The story began in 1989 when Marlene BurtonWitz, opened the doors to this now iconic shop—naming it after her husband, William. Today, with Kristi Smith at the forefront, Marlene's vision continues to thrive as Sweet William remains Hinsdale's premier fashion house for women’s clothing and accessories.

“Marlene’s belief in customer service has been the backbone of Sweet William’s philosophy,” says Smith, who marks her tenth year at the helm. “To her, customer service wasn’t just about servicing the customer but also bringing them quality, stylish, and customized clothing.”

Sweet William quickly became more than a store—it was a trusted style resource, keeping clients from worrying about trends or quality. “Customers needed professional stylists to bring out their personality, and that is what Sweet William did,” says Kristi. “My team and I are honored to carry on this legacy every day.”

Marlene had her eye on Kristi for quite a while—a bonafide city soul at the time. Though Kristi wasn't ready to let go of her Chicago lifestyle, the daily commute began to take its toll after she and her husband moved to the Western Suburbs growing their family with two girls. "It was then I called Marlene, and she said, 'I knew you would call'—and here I am 20 years later," says Kristi.

After two weeks at Sweet William, Kristi knew this was where she wanted to be. “Here you got to know the customers on a much deeper level who valued style consultation. I got to know them as individuals which made styling fun and easy.”

Additionally, her team had become an extended family with some that have been with Sweet William since its inception. “My staff is truly a dream team, and I feel blessed to have each one of them in my life,” she says. “Each team member has their own responsibilities and their own strengths, and together we create a powerful team who support one another each and every day.”

“Customers needed professional stylist to bring out their personality, and that is what Sweet William did.”

With a lifelong passion for fashion, Kristi has been preparing for an opportunity like this all her life. The Texas native studied fashion merchandising financing her way through college by honing her retail and customer service expertise at the Dallas Galleria Mall, including a stint at Marshall Fields.

Once she moved to Chicago, she expanded her fashion knowledge at Jil Sander where she gained insight into the quality of fabrics and handstitched garments. She then transitioned from ready-to-wear to fine jewelry at Elements, where she mastered the art of expressing personality through exquisite pieces. At Marlowe, she refined her expertise in tailor-made pieces and fine fabrics— and it was during this time she met Marlene.

After a decade, Kristi transitioned to ownership—though it was a nerve-racking process. "My biggest fears centered around managing the financial and banking aspects, which can be overwhelming,” she says. “I also worried about whether I could support my staff and if our customers would embrace this change—after all, Marlene left some big shoes to fill." Yet as Kristi found her footing, everything fell into place.

Kristi has stayed true to Sweet William's philosophy while carefully evolving through time. While keeping several key designers, she's introduced edgier collections to the store. "I love the attention to detail, something a little different or unique that sets us apart from other stores," she says. "That's what draws me to a designer."

Furthermore, she’s integrated social media into her operations. “This has changed the way we do business immensely and has become such a valuable source for us that we hired a social media manager,” she says. “My intent is to keep evolving with the times.”

Kristi also has had the heartfelt opportunity to get involved with various organizations throughout the years. “I feel extremely proud of how I can now help certain charities and those in need,” she says.

Through the evolution, the Sweet William brand has been carefully defined while keeping its core values. “It’s a lifestyle brand of expertly curated collections where you can shop in a relaxed atmosphere and receive one-on-one customer service,” says Kristi.

Sweet William’s customer service extends far beyond its doors, setting it apart from big-box retailers. Kristi is dedicated to offering exclusive and unique lines each season. “While e-commerce makes it nearly impossible for any brand to be entirely unavailable, we do carry a few designers that can’t be found elsewhere in Illinois and are hard to track down online,” she says.

For brands that are stocked at stores like Neiman Marcus or Nordstrom, Kristi takes a tailored approach, handpicking selections to avoid duplication styles from those retailers. “Our relationships with designer agents and showrooms are key,” she says. “They understand our approach and work with us to provide an exclusive shopping experience that reflects our vision.”

When heading to fashion week and buying trips, Kristi brings more than just a budget and sell-through reports—she also takes a list of customer preferences. “Knowing what sold last season, what didn’t, and why, is important,” she explains, “but the most important thing I keep in mind is our customers and their requests. We actually mention specific clients during the buying process, choosing pieces with them in mind, and reach out to them six months later when the garment arrives.”

Establishing this level of trust with her customers, Kristi has introduced many different designers, brands, and styles to the store, keeping her customers in touch with the latest, most unique trends. “A new line has to resonate with me before I consider it,” she says. “Often when I find a new designer, I will look at it one season and then revisit it the next season to see how the line evolves from season to season before committing to it.”

One key component to sourcing and buying new lines is taking one of her in-house stylists with her to fashion week. “If they feel the same way I do, I am even more confident the new line will be successful.”

Kristi also incorporates her personal styles when buying for the store. “I love fashion, and I love everything about it,” she says. “Dressing up, dressing stylish, and dressing current makes me feel confident and this is what influences my selection of what we offer.”

Although Kristi and her team always consider their own expertise, trust that their inspiration also comes from their customers. Kristi and her team listen to their customers’ recommendations to help discover new designers, too. “Their suggestions are incredibly valuable,” she says. “They trust us, and we trust them in return.”

Kristi is reminded of Sweet William’s impact on customers when they share their memories of their first visits to the store. “They even remember the first outfit they purchased 35 years ago,” she says, “and some still own those pieces today. We’re fortunate to have such loyal customers, many of whom have been with us since the very beginning.”

Hinsdale’s Hadas Teuscher created Trove Objects Gallery for those seeking to fill their homes with beauty and authenticity

WORDS BY MICHELLE CROWE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN

HAIR AND MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST

Hadas Teuscher wears Alice & Olivia in her home with collected objects.

In her time leading content and communications for a luxury design firm, Hadas Tuescher noticed that while clients spent hours agonizing over the smallest design details like door pulls and brass finish, the home objects that serve as finishing touches for rooms were almost an afterthought. “The objects were slightly generic, and all came from the same website. That aspect of design was lacking resources;” she says.

When the time came to step out on her own, Hadas acknowledged that as much as she thrived on writing about subject like “why did Picasso have a blue period?” and the restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral after the fire, she loved writing about makers the most. Sourcing and getting to know artisans offered her opportunities for deep dives on the internet. “These are artists who are honoring traditional techniques. Everything they do is handmade and one of a kind. I loved sharing their stories.”

Teuscher dove deep, brainstorming, meeting with consultant Brittany Jelinek, creating a binder filled with the work of great makers and all that inspires her.

“We're going

to conquer the world.”

From this exploration Trove Object Gallery was born. An elevated platform, dedicated to bridging the gap between creator and consumer, where collectors can get to know the heart and hands behind the treasures. “We have 30 makers who all share the same philosophy of handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces,” she says.

Trove offers exposure and a different relationship than a traditional gallery, which Hadas feels is beneficial to everyone. Designers, homeowners, and those who appreciate excellent storytelling can get lost on the site, exploring by maker, medium, category, or country. Asked about this unique way to shop, she replies “ It relates back to my love of travel. I find in talking to people from places as different as Japan and Portugal that even though they’re from very far apart, they share a lot of the values that made me seek them out.”

The Trove Journal offers glimpses into other interests, travel, and inspiration. “It’s my way to share what I love, a little bit about myself and my family. We had a summer trip to Sicily, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the pignas. I wrote a post about the history behind them and I was drawn to these sculptural pinecones,” she

says, adding, “ I try to keep it light but share a bit of knowledge that I think is interesting.”

The Hinsdale friends and neighbors she and her family cherish are her biggest supporters so far. “This is a worldly and sophisticated community filled with people who have more appreciation for craft and art and one of a kind,” Tauscher says.

Her dreams for Trove Objects Gallery are much bigger than local, though.

Asked about her hopes for this collective, she replies, “We’re going to conquer the world. I hope this resource will allow people to bring items into their house at somewhat of an accessible price point and take the sourcing dilemmas out for people.”

Whether customers choose a vessel from Argentina, a table lamp from Turkey, or a vase from Germany, the selected prize will become part of the new owner’s story as they get to know the artist through the site.

As Tauscher says, “I love having pieces in my house that remind me of something or have a special meaning is really important. A well-curated home is important for peace of mind.” Now everyone can experience this deep connection to their own chosen treasures.

HUNTING AND GATHERING

If one of the secrets to replicating classic old world Italian cooking is sourcing elite ingredients, then Che Figata has cracked the code by stocking its larder with some of the most delicious artisan finds that money can buy.

Every week, chef Liam Athy slips out of his kitchen at Che Figata in Naperville, buckles his seatbelt and drives more than two hours, round trip, to buy mushrooms. There are tolls to pay; traffic jams to avoid; parking spots to wrestle over. For most chefs, having to make a regular commute to the city would be a headache; Athy considers it a gift from the culinary gods. He can’t say string together enough

superlatives about his ’shroom supplier, Four Star Mushrooms, which operates a high-tech climate-controlled warehouse—the Costco of fungi—in Chicago. Each of the facility’s climate controlled “growth chambers” produces a different forest-floor treasure: black oysters mushrooms, blue oysters, king trumpets and cinnamon caps, to name just a few.

Prior to our recent visit to Che Figata, Athy picked up a basket full of lion’s mane

and time-tested rustic Italian recipes.

Pappardelle alla Bolognese

mushrooms, which often look like fuzzy snow-white hunks of edible sea coral. But Athy is just as impressed with their flavor profile as their alabaster looks. They taste meaty and nutty, so much so that many chefs swap them in for seafood when preparing vegetarian dishes.

Athy has an idea for a new starter: lion’s mane mushrooms sliced into toast-point-shaped triangles, which are then paired with a mushroom conserve and silky cauliflower puree. If all this sounds like the kind of dish that screams out for a few plump panseared scallop, it is. Only Athy wants to flip the script by using mushrooms, as a way to honor the bounty of our Midwestern food ecosystem rather than importing East Coast scallops.

Ultimately, it’s Che Figata’s obsession with sourcing premium local ingredients that has help set it apart from the legion of Italian restaurants in the western suburbs. Besides, he wants a meat-free starter that he can serve throughout the colder months, something rich enough to provide diners solace when the biting winds and snowdrifts roll into town.

The resulting dish is hearty and primal. You’d swear it was prepared in some Colonial-era cast-iron pot over a roaring fireplace. It blooms beautifully with miso notes, hints of roasted chestnuts and an undercurrent of acidity. In short, it’s pure adulterated mushroom on mushroom love.

Che Figata opened in 2018 with a more traditional rustic Italian menu. Under Athy, its offerings have gradually drifted into more creative directions. Most of his dishes showcase the unexpected intersections between our Midwestern ingredients

Che Figata’s dining room, trimmed with royal blues and chocolate-colored leather, is the perfect milieu for this type of fare. Every seat in the house stares into the heart of Athy’s expansive open kitchen, similar to the way that an opera house or Broadway theater fans its seats in a semi-circle around its main stage. In keeping with that theme, the kitchen is adorned with its fair share of props. Two rows of open shelves perched above the kitchen are stuffed cans of tomatoes, wicker baskets, a pizza peel and chords of firewood.

But consider the origins of that wood. Athy orders it from an old-school Wisconsin woodsman, who kiln-dries his chords for 72 hours. Most wood, says Athy, has a 11 to 17 percent moisture content. These logs retain just 3 percent, which is a chef’s dream. When Athy preps his wood-fired oven and grill, the wood burns immaculately clean. Sit at the chef’s counter seats bordering Che Figata’s kitchen and you’ll be able to smell the fruits of Athy’s labor: plumes of cherry wood, oak and hickory.

Order Athy’s dry-aged strip steak—served with buttered mashed potatoes and a classic demi-glace—and the aromas will travel to your table with the dish, perfuming your booth with the smoky aromas of the North Woods. Then have general manger Cherish Varley pick out a bottle of red wine for you—perhaps a nero d’avola from the female-led Occhipinti winery in Sicily— and you’ll find yourself in an Italian carnivore’s fever dream. Between bites, there’s plenty of culinary theater to be enjoyed. Feather-thin slices of Parma ham (hint: try the burrata and prosciutto pizza sauced with Genoese pesto) will come wheeling off deli slicers. And bordering the kitchen sit long rows of microgreens, which Athy purchases from Spira Farms.

Fresh herbs ready to cut
Front row for the kitchen magic

DINNER DATE

Although Athy can order dozens of different greens, he has his favorites: micro basil, pea tendrils, nasturtiums, sorrel and shiso. Throughout the night, he’ll clip and snip those greens to finish off most of his pastas.

His pastas are first-rate. His rigatoni alla zozzona, for instance, is a clever fusion of two Roman classics flavored with guanciale: a ruddy-sauced amatriciana and eggy carbonara. A blend of guanciale, onions and house sausage is added to pureed tomatoes spied with Calabrian chiles. The dish is finished, carbonara style, with pasta water and egg yolks, which produces a creamy terra cotta-hued gravy, which tastes like a richer version of vodka sauce.

If that sounds enticing, recognize that Athy spends six hours each day making his impressive Bolognese, which reduces successive rounds of wine and milk until the acidity of the tomatoes have melted away, leaving room for his carrot-rich sofrito and a triple meat combination of pancetta, pork and beef to take center stage. To add to the dish’s luxurious appeal, Athy adds a dollop of house made ricotta sprinkled with micro basil.

Should you have any doubt, by this point, that Che Figata can offer you ingredients and flavors rarely seen in most local

Cocktails

Italian trattorias, consider what Athy does with some of the whey that’s left over from his cheesemaking process. Since he isn’t a fan of treacly desserts, he reduces the whey into a sweet-sour caramel sauce, which is drizzled on a dark-chocolate brownie. This isn’t your typical Duncan Hines dessert; it tastes more like an expresso cake, which becomes an affogato once Athy’s smoked vanilla ice cream dribble into all of its soft crevices.

Athy works with a specialty gelato producer in Montgomery, Illinois, who sources the base ingredients for her gelatos from Italy. The result tastes like vanilla ice cream warmed over a raging campfire. It shouldn’t be missed, as it tastes like any great gelato should: a blend of childhood memories and a dream of Italian adventures yet to come.

Che Figata is located at 2155 City Gate Lane in Naperville. Call 630.579.3210 or visit chefigatakitchen.com

If you’re a fan of dirty martinis, Che Figata might serve one of the “dirtiest” around, which is chilled with anchovy-flavored ice cubes. Fortunately for the rest of us, who may prefer a “cleaner” cocktail, the rest of its cocktail list showcases the glories of European liquors.

White Negroni:

Truth be told, the white negroni is really more of a French riff on a negroni, which blends gin with two French liquors—Suze bitters and Lillet Blanc, a wine-based aperitif. The drink, more botanical-forward than sweet, glows like sun-lit daffodils in the glass.

Winter Warble:

In a different time and place, this variation on a Jungle Bird cocktail would have been served in a kitschy mug in a tiki bar. Che Figata classes things up by balancing out those sweet flavors—orgeat, cream sherry, aged rum— with a lot of lemon juice and a loamy head of Peychaud’s foam. It’ll have you whistling like a songbird by the end of the evening.

Q&A | Home and Holidays with Mike McCurry

How was local real estate different this year?

We saw hefty increases in value this year as demand outpaced inventory. Overall, buyers focusing on Hinsdale benefited from more homes listed for sale than many of its neighboring towns.

What matters most to people buying Hinsdale homes?

Most families moving to Hinsdale come for the schools and proximity to Chicago. Location within Hinsdale is important and many families move closer to the high school as their kids get older.

Local real estate predictions for 2025?

I think we’ll see more sellers bring their homes to market because lower interest rates free them to move on and to purchase another home.

Favorite holiday tradition?

When our children were very young, my wife and I acquired The Advent Book by Kathy and John Stockton. It’s a beautiful pictorial book with the Christmas story of Jesus being born. Our family would take time each night reading a new page as Advent unfolded leading to Christmas. All four of our children learned to read out loud during this time. Even though my children are in high school and college, we still gather to read it.
