The Day Chicago Wept NORTH SHORE DOCUMENTARIAN’S NEW FINDINGS ABOUT SS EASTLAND DISASTER PREMIERES THIS MONTH ON CHANNEL 7. BY DAVID RUTTER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Within 20 minutes on the misty, damp morning of July 24, 1915, death sat down at the party. The day had been carefully designed as the social beacon of Chicago’s working-class summer that year. Within those 1,200 seconds, it would become the day Chicago wept. Only a plaque on the Chicago River’s south wall at the LaSalle Street bridge marks the tragedy. The Eastland capsized at that spot—killing 844 Chicagoans, mostly young Czech and Polish immigrants. For 18 years, Evanston native Harvey Moshman has been obsessed with the worst single tragedy in Chicago history. He could not escape curiosity and anger. And now, with his second WTTV-Channel 7 television documentary on the Eastland disaster debuting at 8 p.m. July 25, he can put down the sword and relax. Continued on PG 10

It wasn’t exactly on Katie May’s radar to get back into the fashion industry. The Lake Forest mom had her hands full with her family—husband Greg and two young daughters, Arabella and Windsor—not to mention an ongoing whole house renovation over the past year. But after posting images of the pajamas she was making for herself and her girls last year, she couldn’t ignore the encouragement from her nearly 20,000 Instagram followers. “I started by making myself and my girls’ clothing,” says May, explaining that she started with pajamas because she had a hard time finding pajamas that were cute, comfortable, and affordable and her girls liked sleeping in nightgowns. “When I found that I finally had time to be creative again, I would hop on my Singer sewing machine any chance I got and make them pretty things.” Her eponymous retail clothing and accessory line, Shop Katie May, was born, and May grew her business slowly, selling pajamas and robes for girls and women, soft blankets, and her organic skin care line, online.
