POWER OF PARTNERSHIP
Private schools on the North Shore put a heavy emphasis on partnering with parents to provide the best education and get optimum outcomes for their students. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Research shows the children of parents who are actively involved in their children’s education have a much better chance of success in school. A recent study conducted by the American Psychological Association found that not only do strong partnerships between parents and schools improve academic
performance, but they also have a positive impact on social and emotional learning. For this week’s special private schools issue of The North Shore Weekend, we surveyed school administrators on the North Shore and asked them to share their own strategies for ensuring those valuable parent and family partnerships. Alex Sheridan, Director of Enrollment, Marketing, and Financial Aid at Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS), says parent partnership is
really the foundation for a child's learning. He tells every family he meets that everything that happens at school is only as good as what's getting reinforced at home and vice versa. “We want to be sure that we can support a student and provide them a meaningful learning experience,” Sheridan says. “We want to be sure that the spirit of partnership is there because the relationship we have with families during the time their kid is in school is paramount.”
LFCDS had built a strong culture of communication, being responsive and timely, and being thoughtful, Sheridan says. The school is lucky to only have 15 kids in its classrooms, which means teachers can put a lot of time into attention, not only into the kids but into their parents. “When families come in it's something that will become clear to them as they're going through their journey,” says Sheridan. “The argument we're Continued on PG 8

laying forth for families is when your kids are coming through LFCDS, your role is central.” At Lake Forest Academy (LFA), which educates students grades 9 through 12, about 50 percent of the students are boarding students and 25 percent are international, coming from as far as Asia. Logistically, this requires that the school take a unique approach to ensure parents stay involved in their child’s education. Carolyn Gorowski, LFA’s Dean of Admission, says partnerships with parents and families is part of the school’s environment. LFA has a number of programs in place to ensure parents stay involved. Parents of local students who are new to the school are paired with a parent of a current student, a Parent Ambassador. “It’s really helpful just to answer some of the initial questions. I think with the anxiety of starting in a new environment, they really help in that transition,” Gorowski says. “When new families are on campus, they will also connect with a Faculty Advisor, who will be the family’s point of contact throughout their high schoolers time at LFA.” For boarding students, LFA utilizes technology keep parents connected to the school and to their child’s education. The school utilizes both video conferencing and in-person meetings with parents who are out of state or out of the country. It also streams athletic events so parents can
watch their child participate in sports. “We had our family weekend a few weeks ago and a number of events on cam-

pus, but we also had some virtual events just to make sure that we're able to stay connected with parents who can't always come to campus for everything,” says Gorowski. Woodlands Academy of the Society of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest draws on its religious traditions to shape its philosophy about parental inclusion in a child’s education, says Christine Schmidt, Associate Head of School at Woodlands. “Madeleine Sophie Barat was foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart, and she believed the vision of education is at its core relational. At our freshman parent orientation, we invite the parents to partner with us as we support their student throughout their high school years,” Schmidt says. “The parent community is always invited to the school masses, speaker series events, and we encourage them to participate in the events sponsored by our local community organization.” This coming week, Woodlands sophomores will receive their Mater medals signifying their continued growth as a member of the Sacred Heart community, and their parents are invited to the mass and the parent reception. A similar type of activity takes place annually for each class. This includes the senior breakfast, the

junior ring ceremony, and the new student welcome prayer service. Parents also enjoy monthly coffees at the school and an annual fundraiser, Conge. “Each student is assigned an advisor for their four years of high school and that

advisor is also a point person for the parents to contact if needed,” says Schmidt. “Parents have access to their student’s grades, weekly teacher comments, and our school calendar through our student data system portal. We also hold virtual parent/ teacher conferences so that we can accommodate our parent’s schedule, as well as our international parents.” Jodi Reuter, Principal at Sacred Heart School (SHS) in Winnetka, says Sacred Heart has always encouraged parent engagement on many levels. “Members of this school community are dedicated to enriching and educating the hearts and minds of students from three years old through 8th grade,” Reuters says. “We proudly believe that our time together matters and that we are one, big family.” SHS offers many special programs and traditions that parents are invited to throughout the year that showcase what the students learn and how it benefits them (socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually). “It can be the sacraments in 2nd and 8th grades, Prayer Families, Open Houses,
classroom parties, sports, fine arts, fundraisers for the whole school, or outside events that bring the whole community together,” she says. For the most part schools and parents want the same outcomes for their kids, and ideally should work together with the aim of creating leaders, and to be kind and gracious to other kids, says Tom Meagher, Principal of the School of Saints Faith Hope & Charity in Winnetka, “In the Catholic sense we’re following
Parent's Association is engaged at every level of the school. “Parents collaborate with teachers and administrators to facilitate communication, build strong connections within the parent community, and offer educational opportunities for parents,” Flemma says. “Several times a year we will bring speakers that work with both teachers and parents on a range of topics.” Topics have included how the
adolescent brain works, what the impact of social media is on learning and wellness, and how parents can best support kids in a rapidly changing world. “We believe that helping to answer those questions for parents leads to better educational and social-emotional outcomes for kids, says Flemma. “To me, all of this is more important now than ever. I'm not sure there has ever been a harder time to be a parent and we believe that strong partnerships with parents is one of the best tools we have at NSCDS to educate kids.”
love one another as you would yourself. Then we also want the students to do service and do well in school,” Meagher says. “We feel we can do that quite well when we team with our parents because then the kids learn and understand that school and parents are on the same page.” An active Parents Association is one of the keys to maintaining strong partnerships with parents at North Shore Country Day (NCCDS). ABOUT US: For over 130 years, LFCDS has offered a program that is rich in tradition and honors the progressive roots of the Country Day school movement. Students benefit from an experience that blends philosophies and pedagogical approaches, strikes a balance in academic and social-emotional development, and nurtures palpable feelings of belonging.
ACADEMICS: A blended approach to learning allows LFCDS to subscribe to best practice while offering a curriculum that meets each child where they are. Small by design, with classes between 12 to 15 students and 7:1 student-teacher ratio across the school, size enables LFCDS the ability to individualize and differentiate based on student interest and need. CO-CURRICULAR ENRICHMENT/ARTS & ATHLETICS: The LFCDS program builds participation in the arts and athletics directly into the school day. Students participate in visual arts and music at every grade level, and drama is added for students in the Upper School (Grades 5-8). The athletic program is also a requirement for Upper School students, who are able to participate on three different teams during the course of the year. Teams meet at the end of the school day before dismissal, which not only gives students the opportunity to develop their skills and hone their sense of sportsmanship, but also to appreciate the value of participation and inclusion. CULTURE AND COMMUNITY: There is a strong sense of connectedness that lives across the school’s 33-acre campus and 150,000 sq. foot building that binds the entire LFCDS community. Relationships among students, parents, and teachers live at the center of the LFCDS experience and carry on long after graduation.
OUTSTANDING CHARACTERISTICS: LFCDS has families from over 30 zip codes, commuting from as far south as Willowbrook and as far north as Lake Villa.
12 | SATURDAY OCTOBER 21 | SUNDAY OCTOBER 22 2023

CURRICULUM: Consistent with the Goals and Criteria for Sacred Heart education, Woodlands Academy’s Academic Program instills a deep respect for intellectual values, allowing students to engage in challenging experiences that inspire intellectual curiosity, a global mindset, and a life-long love of learning. Students will have multiple opportunities to become culturally competent, globally minded citizens by exploring their world through group and individual exchange programs, group trips, and a locally based global-focused curriculum. Woodlands’ beautiful 41-acre Lake Forest campus is dotted with trees and green spaces, along with five newly constructed tennis courts and an enhanced athletic field. Matthew Pietrafetta, CEO of Academic Approach, a leading test preparation and tutoring company, explains the ramifications of recent changes to administering the PSAT. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
It may seem a little late, given how we’ve adapted to online technology the past few decades, but over the past two weeks every high school junior in Illinois was required to take the Pre-SAT (PSAT) digitally. This is the first time the digital test is being administered statewide, the print PSAT (except for those special accommodations) having been discontinued, and it poses challenges and benefits for both students and schools. “Digital administration requires a significant effort by schools—charged, approved devices, updated browsers, adequate Wi-Fi, dedicated testing space, etc.,” says Matthew Pietrafetta, CEO of Academic Approach. “We've been helping schools prepare for these changes with our own suite of digital SATs, which enable school officials to practice the test administration, help students acclimate to the new test form, and provide performance data for teachers.” By working with schools ahead of test day, their assessment coordinators are able to trouble-shoot the logistical requirements of the digital tests, so they can avoid surprises. There’s a lot of pressure on schools to make it all work. In addition, the training offered for administrators has been inconsistent. “This could potentially be a splash of cold water, as large-scale rollouts like this tend to invariably include some false starts. It’s a high stakes moment, and for students this

is the test that National Merit Scholarship is measured by,” he explains. “By the time this goes to press there will surely have been plenty of reporting and discussion about how it went—or didn’t—at numerous schools. The College Board will surely offer make-up testing dates, so students will ultimately have a chance to test, but it will likely be a stressful experience for some." Despite any initial rollout difficulties, students should ultimately benefit from the SAT and PSAT's new digital formats, since so many students are highly proficient in the use of digital technology.
20 | SATURDAY OCTOBER 21 | SUNDAY OCTOBER 22 2023
“By and large, especially because of pandemic remote learning, students have adapted to online presentations of curriculum and assessments,” Pietrafetta says. “However, students vary; some have developed learning strategies (such as pencil-and-paper annotations and highlighter use) so rooted in paper that they strongly prefer the ACT, which is still administered in print. Some students need the visual, graphic-motor experience of pencil and paper to learn best. The College Board, which administers the PSAT, has taken several precautions for what could be glitches in the system. If a student loses internet access, their answers are saved. If they regain access later, the student can pick up right where they left off. The switch to a digital testing format removes many of the cumbersome tasks involved with administering the PSAT in print. There’s no dealing with shipments of the test, doing the prep work of preparing the test to be taken (all tests required a label to be affixed), and then shipping the print tests back. It was a time-consuming process. Students taking the digital PSAT will now receive their results much faster (early November as opposed to middle of December). “Digital testing is the future. It's the way the graduate tests have all gone, and it is a much more efficient model that opens the possibility for testing under a lot of different circumstances,” he says. “It could even be administered off site at some point in the

future, so that schools wouldn’t even have to devote classroom space to it.” Pietrafetta founded Academic Approach in 2001, so he and his team have more than two decades in the test preparation and tutoring field. Given that experience, he has some words of wisdom for parents as they help their kids deal with these changes by the College Board. One of the big decisions kids have to make, if they are taking standardized tests, is whether to take the SAT or the ACT. “This is not your grandma’s SAT anymore. Even though we have always encouraged students to take both a practice ACT and a practice SAT for comparison, it is more important than ever because it is difficult to predict—without experiencing them—which test a student finds more favorable,” says Pietrafetta. “You could predict previously often based on the student’s curriculum and test-taking history, but now the modalities of testing are so different and the changes to the SAT are so profound.” The difference between the two tests isn’t just that one is digital, and one is paper. The ACT is linear, while the SAT is adaptive, meaning each of the sections of the test (Reading and Writing; Math) are divided into two modules with each module having the same timing and number of questions. While The difficulty of the second module will be determined by the student's performance on the first module, scoring is the same (400 to 1600) and the SAT now has a trimmed down 98 questions while the ACT remains at 215. Pietrafetta says that students who work at a faster pace may be more comfortable with the ACT, especially if they are adept at science (the ACT has a separate science section while the SAT does not). Students who work at a slower pace and are comfortable reading passages (significantly shorter than ACT passages) on a computer screen will prefer the SAT. The ACT will soon offer a digital format, but students will maintain the option to take the test on paper for the foreseeable future. “The new, digital SAT offers an efficient model for administering assessments at large scale,” Pietrafetta says. “That's the way the industry should go. Save trees, save time, save administrative labor, and yield actionable results faster.” For more information about Academic Approach, call 888-571-3993 or visit academicapproach.com. “HE SAVED MY LIFE” Peripheral Neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Linda explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?”
Highland Park resident Linda S. had been experiencing the painful side effects of Peripheral Neuropathy, “my feet and legs were extremely painful and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do. That I would have to take Gabapentin for the rest of my life.”
Dr. Su has been helping the senior community for over 10 years using innovative integrative medicine. Specializing in chronic pain cases, specifically those that have been deemed ‘hopeless’ or ‘untreatable’, he consistently generates unparalleled results. Now Linda and her sister operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes covering up to 5 miles a day.
Linda hasn’t worn socks in five years “It’s life altering. As far as I’m concerned, Dr. and was wearing shoes two sizes too Su saved my life!” big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her Then she met Dr. Su. Dr. Su has been helping the senior feet. She was experiencing the burning, community for over 10 years using numbness, tingling, and sharp pains innovative integrative medicine. that those suffering from neuropathy often describe. Specializing in chronic pain cases, specifically those that “The way that I would describe it, it’s equivalent have been deemed ‘hopeless’ or ‘untreatable’, he consisto walking on glass.” tently generates unparalleled results. Unfortunately Linda’s story is all too familiar for the over 3 million people suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy. If you are unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis, you’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet. You have difficulty walking, shopping, or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain. You’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall. Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have terrible side effects. Fortunately, four months ago Linda read an article about a new type of clinic in Northfield that works with difficult to treat cases such as Peripheral Neuropathy sufferers, without invasive surgeries and medications. Dr. Kuan Su, DACM, L.Ac., Dipl.OM founder of Acupuncture North Clinic is using the time-tested science of Acupuncture and technology originally developed by NASA that assists in increasing the blood flow and expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease.
“Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,” Linda enthusiastically describes life after receiving treatment with Dr. Su. “I can wear socks and shoes!”
THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
What was once a missing link in senior healthcare is now easily accessible to the residents of Northfield and the surrounding Northshore area. If you missed too many tee times because of pain or you’ve passed on too many games of pickleball because you’re afraid of falling, it is time to call Kuan at Acupuncture North Clinic. Dr. Su is now accepting a limited number of new patients. In an effort to protect his patients, both current and future, he has made the difficult decision to limit the number of patients seen in his clinic. Only 6 new neuropathy patients will be accepted before the end of October 2023. It’s time you let your golden years BE GOLDEN!

THE WINTER HOUSE
Lili Taylor delivers a perfect performance as a novelist who encounters a stranger while seeking respite at an isolated home in New Hampshire.
BY REX REED ILLUSTRATION BY TOM BACHTELL
RUNNING TIME: 1 HOUR, 39 MINUTES RATING: 3 stars
Lili Taylor is another in a long list of first-rate actors who has inexplicably eluded stardom in favor of good work in solid but overlooked films and plays that deserved more attention than they got. Now comes another one, in which she delivers her most sensitive and nuanced performance. Both audiences and critics have thus far have ignored it, but it deserves a closer look. In a perfect performance of an underwritten role, she plays Eileen Crane, a novelist grieving over the death of her husband and suffering from writer's block who rents an isolated house on a remote lake in New Hampshire to get away from it all and work on a personal memoir. Despite the lonely country ambiance and the freezing cold weather, she enjoys the beautiful scenery, the crackling wood in the fireplace, the long walks to clear her head, and the peace of mind seclusion brings. When her reverie is interrupted by a young man named Jesse—the nervous son of the house's owners who claims he has no other place to go—her irritation is visible, but the punishing cold is daunting
and the hour is late, so she extends some hospitality and allows him to spend the night on the couch. He leaves the next morning as promised, but it's not long before he returns, bringing presents, a gift for making scrambled eggs a special way, and a pleasing personality to keep Eileen's loneliness at bay and her curiosity stimulated. It doesn't take long before she knows he's a stranger, unrelated to the owners, and riddled with inner problems to bring out her talent as a closet psychologist and enough secrets to inspire her writer's ability to play amateur detective. With some trepidation and several awkward failures, a cautious friendship leads to an eventual romance, and as it grows this mismatched pair of accidental lovers overcome a 15year age difference and bring out small moment-to-moment revelations in each other that develop three-dimensional characters beneath the surface. The story switches gears when it becomes clear that Jesse is not who he says he is. He has a criminal past, he's a recovering junkie, and his life is in danger. How

the older woman files the information and the decisions she makes to face facts and ensure future happiness at the same time gives the film ballast and provides a basically slight film with an unexpected maturity. The pace of the film may be too slow to thrill every film fan, but writer-director Keith Boynton adds understated understanding to scenes that might seem forced under a more demonstrative guide and he extracts two performances from his co-stars that blend warmly with mutual charisma. Lili Taylor has made so many forgettable films and played so many meaningless generic roles that it's nice to see her as a real woman with sensitivity and intelligence. It can't be easy to keep up with an actress of such range and experience, but handsome, capable French-Canadian actor Francois Arnaud does a fine job as Jesse. It's rewarding to watch them make an implausible love story plausible. Together, they define the solace we may find, against overwhelming odds, in each other, if we're brave enough to try. From proper high tea to elegantly appointed interiors filled with fine antiques, a sojourn at Lake Forest’s iconic Deer Path Inn can feel like a regal escape to the English countryside. With the holidays upon us, there has never been a better time to rediscover this national treasure in our own backyard. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
For the next 24 hours, you will be addressed as English nobility. In this case, a Lady, but Lord is another option, or perhaps Duke or Countess. And as perplexing as that might sound, when you’ve just checked in to the Deer Path Inn—noshing on a delicious cake left just for you, reviewing a decadent itinerary that includes an invitation to a traditional English tea—it might feel, well, normal. This is no ordinary hotel and what you’re about to experience is nothing short of extraordinary. Originally built in the 1860s as a home for Colonel William Sage on the site of an old hunter’s log cabin, the Deer Path Inn as we know it today was the vision of an architect from the legendary Holabird & Root firm. Its half-timber and stucco details were inspired by traditional manor houses in Chiddington, Kent, one of England’s oldest villages. And while a fire destroyed part of the hotel in 1938, that aura that you’ve accidentally stumbled into a royal villa in the English countryside remains. Sure, you may have dined here at The English Room or met friends for a pint downstairs in the White Hart Pub, but to truly understand why this Lake Forest gem (now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a proud member of the Historic Hotels of America) has earned Travel + Leisure magazine recognition as one of the Midwest’s
leading resort hotels, you need to commit to the story. That means checking in. Getting a Britstyle, oversized key. And from that moment,
time and place become as filtered as the old photos on the walls. As you settle into your suite, beautifully appointed with postcard views over the English garden courtyard, the relaxation takes over. Suddenly, the city and the stress of daily life seem far away. You are a Lady or Lord here, and the adventure has just begun. On The Town Your first order of business today (other than enjoying the aforementioned cake) is to venture out for a curated “scavenger hunt” on Market Square—another historic landmark. The concept is brilliant. Visitors to Deer Path Inn (which could include all of your friends and relatives visiting for Thanksgiving and other winter holidays this year) are treated to a full immersion into the splendor of the Square and some of the finest retailers on the North Shore. As part of this Local’s Only hotel package, you will receive a souvenir tote bag that

features a vintage-style illustration of the city by Lake Forest artist Mark McMahon and a document that serves as a treasure map of all the participating shops and boutiques. This tote will quickly become very useful to collect the gifts (valued at approximately $250) you will collect along the way. True locals know that the historic Market Square (another nod to English architecture, designed by the legendary Howard Van Doren Shaw) is merely steps away from Deer Path Inn but the walk can feel invigorating in the crisp fall air. The first stop is naturally the

popular Starbucks Reserve, offering the perfect place to caffeinate and plot your next move. While the directions are pretty straightforward, there is an air of enigma to the “hunt.” Next up is the Lake Forest Bookstore, a local institution founded in 1949 by a consortium of 12 local women. You won’t be able to stop yourself from browsing the shop’s many offerings, leaving with the first of many small treasures of the hunt (we’d tell you what it is but you need to do it for yourself ). From there, it’s a quick walk over to the iconic Lake Forest Shop. Say hello to the new owners, Lauren Peters and Nicole Carrabine, and see how they are reinventing the boutique for a new generation—again leaving with a very fun gift bag.
The hunt continues to such local businesses as Susan and Jonathan Dick's beloved Sweets emporium (with the toffee to die for); Missy Poth's fabulous M on the Square floral shop; and Smith’s Men’s Store—a 1937 landmark that’s been rejuvenated by new co-owners Trey Gonzales and Kip Helverson. Your final stop will be Amidei Mercatino, an alley-turned-openair-market that has enough European charm not to break the spell that you have actually been transported across the pond. Speaking of which, by now you’re famished. Good thing it’s time for tea. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Tea Master In keeping with the Deer Path Inn’s nearly century-old tradition of excellence, it’s no surprise that the Garden Room’s afternoon tea menu has been selected with the help of Malcolm Ferris-Lay, a Master of Tea whose family has been connected with the tea trade
ioned bicycles around town for a spin, retreat with a book in front of the fire in the Deer Path’s sumptuous “living room,” or merely go back to your suite for a short, decadent nap. The sun is about to set, which means the true magic of the Deer Path experience is about to begin.
ance around you. And while you might be tempted to retire to your noble den after such a decadent meal, one more stop is needed to complete this 24-hour fantasy. You’ll tiptoe back through the hall and corridor to take the steps down through the White Hart Pub (renowned for both its bangers and
since 1842. The 1929 Blend—an Oriental blend lightly scented with oil of bergamot from Sicily—is particularly intoxicating. This is one of more than 20 varieties of teas you’ll have to choose from (others range from Deer Path’s own blended teas to single estate teas, Chinese teas, and herbal and flavored teas) as high tea is served. Paired with a chilled glass of Champagne (wine is also an option), there is no better way to unwind and embrace the elegance of the ritual. A selection of sweet and savory treats will be presented with all the pomp of a posh London hotel. Featuring house made scones, quiches, and an exquisite selection of traditional tea sandwiches, it is an experience you’ll be telling all your friends about (and perhaps booking for them when they visit).
The Legacy Continues As with any establishment that serves a community for nearly a century, the Deer Path Inn has many chapters in its story. This grand dame of Lake Forest is now serving the fourth and fifth generations of the same family as the site of weddings, anniversaries, and other life celebrations. Earlier this day you may have been walked through the hallways and secret passageways to private event spaces that reveal decades of history—walls displaying black and white photos snapped throughout the years. While the property was extensively remodeled and restored in 2016, it retains its intimate inn ambiance with just 57 guest rooms and suites. Ranging in size from 350 to 800 square feet, each is different in its own way, marrying modern luxury with bespoke, old world charm. Dinner tonight is in The English Room, the property’s most formal offering. Evocative of the same mythical English manor on which the inn was created, the lavishly appointed room is both elegant and intimate. Though not strictly enforced, the dress code here is more formal, as it should be. The menu is as curated as everything else on the property with both classic dishes and innovative creations—all paired with one of the best wine lists on the North Shore. Glass of white in hand, you order the Diver Scallops appetizer, served with English pea puree, bacon and tomato jam, and crème fraiche, followed by the almond-crusted Dover sole with a champagne beurre blanc sauce. Part of the thrill is the waiting for the dishes (which are going to taste as amazing as they sound) to appear, soaking in the ambi-
mash, as well as fresh sushi) to The Bar—a wood-paneled hideaway with a floor-to-ceiling wine rack and a speakeasy vibe that harkens back to the Deer Path’s 1929 origins. With an Old Fashioned (the inn’s signature cocktail) in front of you and the reality of ordinary life (stress, deadlines) waiting for you in the morning, lingering a bit longer seems like just the thing any noble person might do. After all, a Lady never sleeps.
This luxurious diversion is available to anyone clever enough to make a reservation (Wednesday through Saturday only, with seating at 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.) but fortunately for you, the English immersion does not end here. After tea, ask to take out one of the old fash-

SLICE OF HEAVEN S U N D AY B R E A K FA S T
Highland Park native and busy entrepreneur Ron Saslow finds room on his plate for another leadership role— co-owner of a pro pickleball team. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Golf, tennis, pickleball. For many, it takes a while to become at least adequate in two of those three sports. Not so with pickleball, claims Highland Park resident Ron Saslow, who struck his first pickleball shot in the spring of 2020, when most of the world welcomed any kind of diversion from COVID-19. Locked up and bored, the Saslow family members couldn’t wait to wake up and start their days with a pickleball rally outside. “Pickleball is easy to play and easy to learn,” the 57-year-old Saslow says. “It’s easy to get good at it, but it’s hard to become a great player. Improvement in golf and tennis is usually measured in months or years. In pickleball, it’s measured in hours or days. “Were you to pick up a pickleball paddle for the first time today, you’d be having fun in an hour, if not earlier,” he adds. “Because people today seek instant gratification, I’m not at all surprised by pickleball’s rapid growth.” More than 36.5 million people played pickleball from August 2021 to August 2022, according to an Association of Pickleball Players (APP) report. Saslow doesn’t see that number heading south anytime soon. And it’s a robust figure that led him to spearhead a group that formed the Chicago Slice, a four-member (two men, two women) professional team in Major League Pickleball (MLP). MLP awarded a team to Saslow and his A-plus band of co-owners—including Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, tennis legend Chris Evert, television host and model Heidi Klum, and Doug Ellin, creator of the HBO series Entourage—in October 2022. The 24 MLP teams gather to compete annually in a pair of three-event segments at sites in California, Florida, Arizona, and Georgia. Half the teams battle in the Challenger category, akin to Major League Baseball’s Triple-A, and the other 12 teams (including the Slice) are Premier crews, akin to MLB parent clubs. The Slice captured a championship in the first half of 2023 and then—after a re-draft lottery was held in New York—secured the right to pick first. The Chicago Slice chose none other than Ben Johns, ranked No. 1 in men’s singles,
men’s doubles, and mixed doubles by the Pro Pickleball Association (PPA). He’s pickleball’s GOAT (Greatest Of All Time)—at age 24. “Ben is a good guy, an amazing player,” says Saslow, who’s also the founder and managing partner of Chicago-based Thirty-5 Capital and the founder and CEO of ProXR Pickleball, the official paddle sponsor of MLP since 2021. “He’s also a very smart, analytical player who knows every nuance of the sport. He helped us pick the rest of our team (Erik Lange, Jessie Irvine, and Lacey Schneemann) after we picked him first. “We believe fans of the sport will enjoy Major
League Pickleball more than the other professional pickleball organizations (APP and PPA) because of our league’s team aspect. It’s appealing. Crowds get into it when you attach a city’s name to a team of players battling in a hugely popular sport.” But Saslow’s favorite home team features wife Ellen and their sons Joe (26 years old), Charlie (24), and Danny, a 21-year-old student at Washington University in St. Louis, his parents’ and Joe’s alma mater; Charlie is a New York University graduate. Ellen, a former first-grade teacher who earned her master of science degree at Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy (SESP), picked up pickleball when her husband did, more than three years ago, and she’s as agog about the sport as Ron is. “Danny has told me that pickleball has taken off at Wash U,” Ron Saslow says. “Students can’t get enough of it down there and at other colleges across the country. Five years ago, the average age of a recreational pickleball player was 62; it’s now down to 41.”

The Chicago Slice and the other 23 MLP foursomes are scheduled to play in two more events in 2023, including one in Dallas, November 2-5, and the finale in Southern California, December 7-12. The Chicago Slice franchise does not have a home venue. Yet. Count on can-do Saslow to do something about that, maybe in Highland Park. A son of the late Richard Saslow, Ron attended Highland Park High School for a year before transferring to North Shore Country Day in Winnetka before the start of his sophomore year. He caught and pitched for HPHS’s baseball team and wrestled and played football and baseball at NSCD. “I’ve been interested in sports all my life,” says Saslow, who’s a limited partner of the parent company of the Chicago Cubs and serves on their Advisory Board. “I sold our family business (Hu-Friedy Group) in 2019 because I wanted to go the private-equity route in the fields of sports and music. I haven’t formed a music venture yet; that’s next. “I love work and working.” Richard Saslow bought Chicago-based Hu-Friedy in 1959, 51 years after it was launched. Hu-Friedy is a global healthcare manufacturing company specializing in dental and infection control products. Ron Saslow took over as president of the company in 2000 and served as its CEO from 2005-2019. “I was the only one of my family’s three kids to go into the family business,” Saslow says. “I remember nights at the dinner table, when I was in the fifth or sixth grade, where I learned, learned, learned about my father’s work. My father put no pressure on any of us to do what he did. He was equally supportive of our career interests. “That was one of the big lessons I learned from him. I’m like that with my children.” Saslow describes fatherhood as a journey. He has loved every leg of it. “Be a good parent, a good coach, and a good friend—I’ve tried to be all of those for my sons,” he says. “I love the things we have in common, but I also love the things they’ve done that I never attempted. Joey played basketball, and Danny got into hockey. Charlie enjoys the arts and theater.“All three of them opened my eyes—and became my coaches.” Visit chicagoslice.com for more information.
