Pumpkin Pitch A WILMETTE WOMAN SPEARHEADS PLAN TO COMPOST HALLOWEEN PUMPKINS. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
When Wilmette resident Nicole Boomgaarden saw all the annual Halloween pumpkins go on sale in early September, she decided this was the year to act on an idea that had been brewing for years. In her North Shore community of more than 10,000 households, Boomgaarden wanted to prevent at least some of the pumpkins from going to landfill after Halloween. She contacted Wilmette Public Works Assistant Director Kate Amoruso and together, the two women came up with a plan to collect pumpkins and gourds for composting at the Wilmette Village Hall. Dubbed the “Pumpkin Pitch” (a play on “pumpkin patch,” that has residents essentially pitching their unwanted pumpkins into a dumpster), the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 9. Candles and any decorations should be removed first, though acrylic paint is not a problem. Boomgaarden says they hope to keep a tally of the number of items collected. NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE LAKE FOREST HOSPITAL’S WOMEN’S BOARD KICKS OFF THE HOLIDAYS THIS MONTH WITH ITS ANNUAL BOUTIQUE. BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
As the holidays draw near, so does Lake Forest’s most charitable shopping event. The Women’s Board of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital will host its annual Holiday Boutique from Thursday, November 21 through Saturday, November 23 at the Lake Forest RecreationCenter. Guests can mingle and shop from a curated selection of top retail vendors in one convenient location. Proceeds from the holiday boutique will directly impact that board’s fundraising goals, maximizing its contribution to their $1 million pledge to fund the technology for the new Simulation and Education Center at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. “The Simulation and Education Center is the next major project on the hospital campus. It will be located on the ground floor of the former Hunter Building and when it opens will provide state-of-the-art training and simulation for teams across the hospital and for the community,” says Women’s Board President Kristin McCain. “The Simulation and Education Center will be located on the ground floor of the former Hunter Building.” The 2019 Holiday Boutique will include more than 40 vendors—featuring a variety of one-of-a-kind pieces, ranging from children’s clothing, toys, festive home accents, men’s and women’s fashions, jewelry, and accessories—including Jott as well as the ever-popular Tuckernuck. Guests can get a first peek at the “Mistletoe & Holly” Preview Party (chaired by Diana Webb, Lindsay Nero, and Stephanie Knight) from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20 as they sip on signature cocktails and seasonal bites from Heller Catering.
