JS: We went to Lake Forest to film our interviews with some of Allan’s friends from those days. We were welcomed with a red carpet. It was a wonderful experience! In talking to Allan’s friends, it was important to talk about that period of his life. You really do see the seeds of what he would later become. He started giving parties there. He started having close relationships with women. He would tell them how to dress and how to do their hair. He was a confidant. He later became a confidant to a lot of wonderful women in Hollywood. Teen Miss Great Lakes Stirs Up Debate About Straws

When Sydney Bitar, a sophomore at Loyola Academy, saw the documentary STRAWS at a film festival in Chicago, its message about the damage of single-use plastics on the earth’s oceans and waterways resonated.

“I grew up always caring about the environment,” said Bitar.

Bitar loved the idea that changing a small habit such as using straws could actually make a big difference. “It is such a tangible and simple thing to do,” she told DailyNorthShore.

Bitar realized she could also help raise awareness of this issue by purchasing the licensing rights when the option was offered during a discussion at the festival. When she went on to claim the title Teen Miss Great Lakes in April, Bitar realized she had a platform to share this important environmental message.

On June 9, Bitar will host STRAWS at Skokie Theatre for a free viewing. The movie coincides with Worlds Ocean Day, which is on June 8.

“I am so pleased to screen this film,” Bitar said. “Bringing our community together to watch STRAWS will undoubtedly inspire people to change their personal use of straws and other Miss Teen Great Lakes Sydney Bitar. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER

single-use plastics, while also encouraging dialogue with businesses and community leaders,” she said.

Bitar may to be onto something. A growing awareness of the environmental damage of straws and other single-use plastics appears to be gaining momentum nationwide.

On May 31, Bon Appetit, a large food service company, announced it is banning plastic straws at all 1,000 of its cafes in 33 states with plans to complete the transition to paper straws by September 2019, National Public Radio reported. The Chicago White Sox became the first major league baseball team to ban

plastic straws, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Municipalities are also taking action. Plastic straws are banned in Miami Beach, Florida, Malibu, California and Seattle, while New York City is considering a ban of plastic straws in restaurants.

STRAWS is narrated by actor Tim Robbins and is both educational and entertaining, Bitar said.

Screening the film is part of her responsibility as Teen Miss Great Lakes. Each girl must have an environmental platform that she advocates on behalf of, Bitar said.

Bitar first became interested in pageantry as a way to channel her interest in fashion and modeling. When she attended a local workshop on the Miss Earth United States pageant system, Bitar realized she could also explore her passion for environmentalism.

“I liked how each girl advocated for the environment and decided to join this system,” Bitar said.

As reigning Teen Miss Great Lakes, Bitar will compete in the national finals in Washington, D.C. in July for the title of Teen Miss Earth United States. As she works toward this competition, Bitar plans to continue to raise awareness of the environment.

“STRAWS” will show at Skokie Theatre, 7924 Lincoln Avenue in Skokie on Saturday, June 9 at 1:30 p.m. For more information go to skokietheatre.org.

Ravinia Farmers Market: 40 Years & Growing Strong

Ed Kugler was a vendor at the first Ravinia Farmers Market in 1978, where he was referred to as the “sprout man” because he sold, well, sprouts.

On June 6 when the market opens for its 40th season, he will return in his new role as market manager.

Kugler was inspired to change his diet as a student at Michigan State University while visiting natural food stores, co-ops and vegetarian restaurants, where he learned a principle that has guided him ever since: “You are what you eat and you have to care about the planet.”

He began college in 1970 amidst student protests of the Vietnam War, and tear-gassing at Michigan State and other college campuses.

“My revolutionary thought process was, I could change my diet by not supporting the synthetic industry anymore,” said Kugler. “I looked at all of the paper waste from the fast-food industry and the pollution of conventional food and I didn’t want to support the same industry that was supporting the war.”

Kugler opened The Sprout Shop in Highwood in 1978. The same year, he became a vendor at the inaugural Ravinia Farmers Market. He ran his shop until 1981.

Joe Palminteri, State Farm agent, explained that The Ravinia Farmers Market was created when he and Hank Newenhouse wanted to bring business to Ravinia, help farmers, and provide fresh produce to the community. The first market began with about eight vendors including three selling vegetables, two selling fruit, one mushroom stand, one sprout stand, one flower stand and the “Maytag Man.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Palminteri ran the Farmers Market from 1978 to 2007, after which Highland Park resident Lydia Davis and her son Edward Davis took over. The Davis’ ran the Farmers Market until 2017, and Kugler took it over this year.

Below are some of the key moments that brought Kugler back to his roots: • In 1981, he sold his sprout store to take care of his father and went into the family window cleaning and janitorial business until 1996.

• In 1997, Kugler was involved in Farm Aid by procuring donated organic natural food items during the four-day event.

• In 2008, he created the Green Market in Port Clinton Square • In 2013, Kugler returned to the Ravinia Farmers Market.

The 2018 market features weekly live music and a larger selection of prepared food and bakery items than ever before. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch professional cooking demos, sample vendor products, and participate in different activities throughout the summer.

There are 21 vendors this year, up from 15 vendors in 2017, said Kugler. The new vendors will include Auntie Ambers Kreative Konfections, Cocina Azteca, Curt’s Café, Idle Hour Maple, Katic Breads, Rollicking Buckaroo Pepper Jam and Wanderlust Sea Salt.

To celebrate Ravinia Farmers Market’s 40th anniversary, every Wednesday there will be an 11 a.m. drawing. “Ravinia Festival has graciously given us lawn tickets to give away,” said Kugler.

In addition, there will be organic food baskets and gift certificates from vendors or merchants in the area.

to supply people with all varieties of organic food.

Kugler said the club is based on a per week member service fee of $5. This fee entitles members to look at the variety of crops on Monday and pick up, or have their orders delivered on Thursday.

“Many people think of organic as being high priced, but it’s not,” said Kugler. “It’s subject to price change, because it’s not used that much. Charles H. Walsh Sr., a Lake Forest businessman who experienced a childhood in orphanages and went on to become a successful owner and partner in the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox sports teams, died peacefully at home on Monday, June 4, surrounded by family members.

He is survived by his wife, Janie Walsh; son, Charles H. Walsh Jr. (Violetta); and daughters Julia Wegner (Kenneth Wegner) and Katie Walsh; grandsons Gavin Wegner and Spencer Wegner; and granddaughters Veronica Wegner and Gabrielle Walsh. He is also mourned by his devoted brother-in-law Gregg Comtess (Betsy Comtess); sister-in-law Susan Karrington; niece Faith Comtess; and nephew Korey Comtess.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lake Forest.

Raised in three orphanages for 11 of his first 17 years (the last being what is now known as Maryville Academy in Des Plaines), Walsh (also known as “Chuck”) described his childhood as a happy one, despite the challenges he faced. “All of the boys worked one-half day and went to school during the other half,” he told Forest & Bluff magazine in a June 2006 interview. “I started out as a baker’s assistant, worked on the dairy farm, and then worked in the campus shoe shop where I learned to make shoes.”

He went to work for Florsheim Shoes at age 17, with the intention of becoming a cobbler.

“Instead I found myself working a buffing machine, shining the bottoms of shoes so that they would look good when someone opened the box,” he said. “That was a turning point for me. I decided that you couldn’t go any lower than the bottoms Charles H. Walsh Sr. of shoes.”

He was also involved in myriad philanthropic pursuits. He and Janie chaired many events on behalf of Catholic Charities over the years—including serving as chair-couple of its prestigious Spirit of St. Nicholas Ball in 2014. This ongoing generosity is emblematic of a man who was beloved by all who who knew him. As eldest daughter Julia said, there was much more to Charles H. Walsh Sr. than his sports teams and businesses. At home, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was also a friend and mentor to many—known by all for his gentle modesty.

“His favorite expression was that he believed in understated elegance,” said Charles H. Walsh Jr., joking that the most opulent things his father wore were the championship rings for one of his sports teams. One of Walsh’s close friends said he would often engage in conversations with people who asked about whatever ring he happened to be wearing, and he would even let them try them on.

“He always wanted to teach me about business, and one of the things he would say to me is he wanted to wake up in the morning and shave the face of an honest and fair businessman,” said Walsh Jr., who started Walsh Partners with his father in 1986. “He taught me to be grateful for what you have, and to be humble. Everything that I am, everything that I own, everything that I should ever be, is because of Dad.” But perhaps the most touching testament to Walsh’s humility and gratitude is left at the orphanage where he got his start in life. Sister Catherine Ryan of Maryville Academy often credits Walsh’s leadership during his chairman days for “saving” the institution during a rough time in its history. And given Walsh’s statements in the 2006 interview, it’s clear that the care he received there as an orphan left an indelible impression: “Maryville instilled in me a love of family,” he said. “We were living on dandelion and Chicago Bulls, Mr. Walsh continued to add greens before I got there. Poet Laureate Returns Home to Lake Forest

When Beth Ann Fennelly was a child in Lake Forest, she wanted to be an actor when she grew up. Instead, Fennelly became the Poet Laureate of Mississippi, where she is also a professor and author of six books.

Fennelly returned to her hometown on May 31 to read from her latest book, Heating & Cooling: 52 Micro-Memoirs, at the Lake Forest Book Store.

The book is described as “genre-defying,” since it is essentially a form that she created, drawing on the compression of poetry, the truth-telling of nonfiction and fiction’s arc of the narrative. Each of these super short stories draws from Fennelly’s life, capturing the small, even mundane moments that are often passed over.

Fennelly stumbled on this new writing form.

She and her husband had just completed The Tilted World, a novel they co-authored, set during the 1927 flood of the Mississippi River, which required extensive research. Describing the project as high stakes and stressful, once complete, Fennelly found herself “scratching down little thoughts” on paper.

Over time these scratchings began to add up to something, and Fennelly realized that she was about a third of the way to a book. She came up with the term “micro-memoirs,” and then set to work writing

about experiences from her own life. Fennelly ul“I found the writing of them really fun. It is also timately penned about 100 micro-memoirs, which fun to share them,” Fennelly said.

Fennelly has also enjoyed teaching the writing she culled for stories that focused on themes of her life as a mother, author, professor, feminist and form to her students in the MFA program at the University of Mississippi. She’ll give the students human being.

20 minutes to write a micro-memoir in class, which students share and often find they are proud of what they’ve written.

Some of Fennelly’s micro-memoirs are about her girlhood in Lake Forest, such as the time her father made the family walk to church during the blizzard of 1979 when she was eight years old, or when she acted in the musical Mary Poppins with the now-famous actor Vince Vaughn.

Growing up, Fennelly kept a journal and wrote poems, but her focus was on acting. She was involved with a community theater group at Gorton Community Center, where she developed an interest in creativity and expression. Fennelly learned a lot about performing, skills she routinely relies on when reading from her works at events.

While Fennelly loves working and raising her family in Oxford, Mississippi — hometown of William Faulkner and where the famous independent bookstore Square Books is located — she also enjoys returning to the North Shore. She spent kindergarten through eighth grade at the School of St. Mary and attended Woodlands Academy for high school. Fennelly returns to the Chicago area each year to visit her family and the many close friends she made growing up in Lake Forest.

Fennelly is contemplating writing another book of micro-memoirs. For Fennelly, writing is her filter.

“It’s how I function in the world. It is a way of processing experiences,” she said.

Rainn Wilson to New Trier Grads: Don’t Be An Idiot

New Trier Township High School alumnus Rainn Wilson, known to millions as Dwight K. Schrute on the U.S. version of The Office, implored his alma mater’s Class of 2018 to be change agents in the world and to use the privilege of growing up on the North Shore and attending a school “with a dance wing, a full orchestra, eight theater productions a year and even a radio station” not to seek personal comfort and status but to help others.

Wilson graduated from New Trier in 1984 and became famous as the “assistant (to the) regional manager” of Dunder Mifflin, a fictional paper distribution company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, that was the center of The Office during its 2005 to 2013 run on NBC. He also has starred in many movies.

In his commencement speech, Wilson spoke of his “hippie, Bohemian, Bahá’í parents,” who moved from Seattle to work at the Bahá’í National Center in Wilmette, where he eventually got his first job -- as a security guard.

He spoke of the influence New Trier and its teachers had on his life, specifically Raissa Landor, who taught Great Books, and drama instructors Michael Routenberg, who died in 2006, and Suzanne Adams. Landor and Adams are now retired.

Wilson said: “But my life was changed by this school not because of the facilities, although they are state of the art, not by the philosophy of the school, as comprehensive as it is, but because New Trier attracted some fierce, wonderful teachers that pushed us all to be our very best, and to think and feel as deeply as possible.”

Of Landor, he said: She “coaxed and urged and

inspired us to look at the profound questions of philosophy and spirituality. She spoke with inspiration as we read Plato, Rousseau, Kant and the Bible, examining all of them for the ongoing human conversion that has been happening since we lived in caves: ‘Why are we here? Is there a God? How do we find the truth? Is there fate or free will?’ And finally, ‘What’s love got to do, got to do with it?’ “ Of Adams, he said she inspired him to pursue acting, but not until after first living: “Ms. Suzanne Adams was a true inspiration for me, as an aspiring young artist. I started doing plays at New Trier, and found I was good at it and could make people laugh. I was incredibly insecure, and I had never met anyone in my life that had ever received a paycheck for a creating a work of art. …

So it was a tremendous act of courage on my part as a skinny, pimply 17-year-old to go into Ms. Adams’ office and say to her, to implore her, do you think maybe one day, possibly, I could potentially, maybe, be an actor? And Ms. Adams’ reply was “Oh yes! Absolutely you must try! But first you must travel the world, and fall in love, and read lots of books and go to college and study everything you could possibly study. You must live a rich, wild and luscious, beautiful life!”

In an email to The North Shore Weekend, Adams said her memory differed somewhat: “I don’t remember ‘skinny and pimply.’ I do remember Intelligent, Sensitive and Open. I cast him as Christian in Cyrano de Bergerac, a character noted for his beauty - no mention in the script of pimples. What I saw in Rainn as a young actor was his willingness to use himself in the service of an art form.”

She added: “I loved Rainn’s talk, as I have loved seeing what he’s been doing with his life: Lide, an arts and literacy organization Rainn and his wife founded in Haiti to help girls; Soulpancake; The Office, and most recently The Doppleganger with

Steppenwolf. I’m delighted if I played any role in cheering him on along the way.

Rainn is a pretty darn good example of New Trier’s aspiration ‘To commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the service of humanity,’ which is part of what Rainn underscored in his speech.”

Present rewards past A year after losing to rival New Trier in state-title game, Loyola Academy boys lacrosse team throttles rival New Trier 7-2 in inaugural IHSA state championship game

There they sat, clumps of 2017 Loyola Academy graduates, in the stands at Hinsdale Central High School for the inaugural Illinois High School Association (IHSA) boys lacrosse state championship last weekend.

The former Ramblers/current spectators had been on the team that lost 9-6 to New Trier’s Trevians in the final Illinois High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) boys lacrosse state title game last spring.

“We played tonight for those freshmen in college,” Ramblers junior middie Najee Taylor said June 2. “We knew they were up there.

“We saw them.”

The ’17 lax men and others witnessed LA — in complete control from the first face-off to the celebratory flinging of sticks and gloves and helmets — dismantle rival New Trier 7-2.

The victory also avenged LA’s 5-3 loss to NT May 1 and knotted the all-time record in LA-NT boys lacrosse state championship games at 12-12.

“Our theme today, and it’s what I told our players after mass, was, ‘Play for the championship, not to beat our rival,’ ” Ramblers coach Rob Snyder said. “The face-offs we won early, the start [3-0, after one quarter] we got off to, how we possessed — big factors, all of them.

Possession was huge for us today, a big deal, because it kept our defense fresh, and a fresh defense enabled us to press the way we wanted to press against a team with dodge-heavy players [junior attacks Henry Freedman, Henry Scherb and Dylan Bruno] up top.”

Loyola Academy (22-3) needed only 35 seconds to tally the game’s first goal. Junior middie Timmy Hackett gave those clumps of former players a reason to stand and cheer with the first of his two goals.

Ramblers senior attack Andrew Forsyth struck for a goal a little more than three minutes later, and Taylor, easily one of the most exciting players in the state, released a dazzling pass to senior attack Quinn Callahan, who capped the scoring in the first frame with the first of his three goals at the 1:56 mark.

“Shifty, isn’t he?” Callahan said of Taylor, who verbally committed to play lacrosse at the University of Notre Dame. “Najee does anything he wants to do on a lacrosse field, and whatever it is, he usually does it well.”

The 5-foot-11 Taylor — one of six Loyola Academy IHSLA all-staters, a wideout/cornerback in football and a Des Plaines resident — picked up a lacrosse stick for the first time as a 4-year-old in Cockeysville, Maryland.

“Clutch guy,” Taylor added. “A rock, a great goalie. We love playing when he’s in goal.”

Ramblers sophomore attack Kaden Keller provided a team-high two assists in the final.

Scherb had New Trier’s lone assist.

“We made a million unforced errors,” Trevians coach Tom Herrala said. “Their goalie played well, and their team played well.”

New Trier (21-4) topped a strong team from Cincinnati (St. Xavier) 9-6 May 5 to avenge an 11-7 home loss April 14 and stayed with a 15-2 Culver Academies (Indiana) squad before falling 9-5 April 27.

“We had grinders, good fighters,” added Herrala, whose Trevs racked up a combined eight goals in the middle quarters of a 10-4 defeat of Glenbard West’s Hilltoppers in a state semifinal May 31.

Dwyer dazzles … but New Trier falls to Barrington in state title game

In the waning seconds of the second 10-minute overtime period, New Trier goalkeeper Meghan Dwyer had a strong inkling that it would come down to this.

That soon — and very soon — all eyes would be on her.

The stage was set for Dwyer to take center stage.

“Nerve-racking,” said the Trevians junior.

“With about 30 seconds [left in the second OT], I got a pain in my stomach [that the game would come down to penalty kicks].”

Bring on the floodlights.

Shine the beam on her.

And … so much for her freaking out.

Instead, the PK shootout in the Class 3A girls state soccer championship at North Central College in Naperville on June 2 illuminated Dwyer’s amazing and uncanny abilities.

One of NT’s hidden gems is hidden no longer.

The understated and unheralded Dwyer made a hat-trick full of saves in the first PK session.

She “guessed right” and made three diving stops.

Her effort was resplendent.

It just … wasn’t enough.

Barrington survived Dwyer’s goal-stopping excellence and wound up beating the Trevians in a sudden-death shootout. Fillies junior forward Ashley Prell made the game-winning PK. Barrington’s 2-1 victory brought back a nottoo-distant memory. The Fillies also defeated New Trier in last year’s state final — on PKs. “Tough one for our kids,” said New Trier head coach Jim Burnside, who has guided the Trevians to six state titles and three state runner-up finishes during his illustrious coaching career (508 wins, 74 losses, 32 ties). “Our girls did everything possible to win.

“It was a wonderful season,” he added. “One of the greatest groups of kids that I’ve ever coached. They’re high class. They match so many of the other great teams we’ve had.”

Dwyer’s performance was ... save-sational.

“Meghan played great, and she has played great for us all season,” said Burnside. “She’s a great athlete, and she reads the game well.”

Ten minutes after the game, New Trier senior Nicole Kaspi shook her head and smiled. She was amazed by Dwyer’s work.

“Her ability to guess right was incredible,” said Kaspi, an all-sectional honoree who will play college soccer at the University of Chicago. “She was right place, right time.

“She did big things for us all year,” she added.

No doubt, the Trevians (24-1-2) went into the shootout session with some confidence — especially with Dwyer wearing her poker face and staring down opposing shooters.

Naperville Invitational, Dwyer came up with two saves in a PK shootout win over Neuqua Valley.

Her stops on Saturday night came against Barrington’s Michayla Herr, Madi Rosen and Tina Teik. She made sliding saves to her left twice and went to her right once.

“I was pretty hyped up, when I saved the first one,” said Dwyer, fighting back tears. “I got even more excited after the second one. And then, after the third one, I thought for sure that we were going to win.”

But her counterpart, Barrington’s Samantha Schmitz, also was up to the task. Like Dwyer, she allowed only two shots — one by Kaspi and one by Emma Weaver — to reach the back of the net in the first PK session.

The two goalies also stood out in regulation.

Schmitz made some solid stops early. But she could do nothing about stopping a clever unassisted goal by Kaspi with 13:41 left in the first half.

Kaspi, who can be a magician with the ball, used a deke move to beat a defender and then caught Schmitz in no woman’s land to give the

Trevians a 1-0 advantage.

“Had to score … for the team,” said Kaspi, who finished the season with a team-high 18 goals to go along with six assists.

Barrington (20-3-2) tallied the equalizer with 36:11 left in the second half, when Prell got behind the NT defense, accelerated downfield and drilled a shot past a diving Dwyer to make it a 1-1 game.

Dwyer’s reaction? Disbelief.

Before picking herself off the ground, she pounded the turf several times with her right fist.

“Very frustrating,” Dwyer said.

She didn’t stay agitated for long. After staving off three corner kicks in a four-minute span, Dwyer arguably came up with the “play of the game” by aggressively coming out of the net and stopping a point-blank bullet by Teik with exactly 11:00 left to play.

“Had to make up for the goal I gave up,” said Dwyer, a first-year varsity starter. “Wanted to get one back.”

onship game with a convincing 4-0 victory over Andrew High School in a state semifinal game at North Central on June 1 (see online story at DailyNorthShore.com). The Thunderbolts (21-5) got out to a tough start. They fell behind 1-0 in the second minute of the game, when they scored an own goal. The Trevians took over from there on goals by All-American Sydney Parker, Nell Martin and Whitney Hoban. Sophomore allstater Emma Weaver was credited with three assists, while goalie Meghan Dwyer earned the shutout with the help of defenders Parker, Caroline Iserloth, Meredith Nassar and Josie Crumley along with midfielders Hoban, Weaver and Lily Conley. … Parker, a DePaul University recruit, finished the season with 17 goals and three assists. Weaver, who will play at Villanova, ended up with 15 goals and 22 assists. Senior forward Victoria Flannagan produced five goals and two assists, while Hoban, who will play at Trinity College in Connecticut, had seven goals and nine assists. … NT’s all-CSL South picks included Conley, Dwyer, Hoban, Iserloth, Nasser and Martin.

Jay Cool Saravis, Trevians take fourth at state volleyball tournament

Jay Saravis had just smacked an ace in a boys volleyball state semifinal.

The New Trier junior outside hitter raised his arms briefly and then looked down at hardwood, again briefly, at Hoffman Estates High School June 2. The service winner had given the Trevians a 21-19 lead in the second set of a three-setter with eventual state champion Lincoln-Way East.

His reaction to his ace — in a sport synonymous with deafening and histrionic post-point celebrations — was understated, mellow, cool.

Or Jay Saravis, in a nutshell.

“I’m looking ahead [after each point], looking at the broader picture,” said the 6-foot-4, 190pound Saravis, who led NT’s 2018 club in kills with 168, including four in a 25-16, 25-18 defeat of St. Rita in a state quarterfinal June 1.

“An ace, or a point won in another way, is just a little step in volleyball,” he added. “It’s about the next point … always about the next point.”

Saravis dubbed himself “a huge surfer” after NT’s 14-25, 25-22, 25-17 semifinal loss to L-WE. He planted his bare feet to a surfboard for the first time eight years ago in California.

“Fell in love with surfing right away,” recalled the second-year varsity member.

Unfortunately for New Trier’s Trevians last weekend, LW-E’s Griffins (38-3) caught a wave of momentum midway through that semifinal and kept riding it to snap NT’s winning streak at 15 matches.

NT led 17-12 in the second set, before L-WE responded with a 6-1 run. Griffins senior libero Blake Boykin made several sensational digs to keep points alive in the match-turning stretch.

L-WE edged Neuqua Valley 20-25, 25-21, 25-22 in the title match June 2 for its second state championship in five years; NT (34-8) ended up in fourth place in its fifth straight Elite Eight appearance, falling 25-15, 25-22 to Glenbard West (38-4) in the match for third place earlier in the afternoon.

Following NT’s quarterfinal win June 1, the topic of Saravis’ tranquil demeanor came up in the post-match presser. His coaches and teammates appreciated it in practices and in matches, especially in matches, when a levelheaded, calm presence is always comforting in an emotionpacked sport.

“Jay is humble, always poised and laser-focused,” Trevians coach Sue Ellen Haak said of the Trev who contributed a team-high four digs in last weekend’s state semifinal and a pair of aces in the third-place contest.

the regular season.

The team’s leader in aces (36) then quickly followed that up with a caveat: “It’s been a whole team effort, all season,” Saravis said of the program’s fourth run to the Final Four. “We’re not a solo act.”

More than one — many more — greeted Saravis warmly in a Hoffman Estates High School lobby after the tough semifinal loss to LW-E last weekend. The throng of Jay Saravis fans was 10-12 strong, many of them family members.

Saravis hugged most of them, thanked them for attending and smiled with all of them for a group photo.

He politely left the throng to rejoin his teammates, who had congregated outside in the parking lot. They had some time to kill, a lunch to eat, before taking on Glenbard West for third place at state.

Saravis, no doubt, was thinking mostly about one thing: the next point.

Notable: New Trier senior middle and Loyola University-bound Joe D’Attomo and sophomore outside hitter Colin Heath paced the Trevians’ attack at state last weekend, striking a combined 16 kills apiece in three matches. NT senior setter Tergel Gandelger delivered 53 assists; senior hitter Marty Tatosian pounded five kills in a state semi, matching sophomore hitter Peter Brown’s kill total in the match for third place; and senior outside hitter Tennessee Fulks — second among teammates in aces this spring with 35, had a team-high six digs in NT’s defeat of St. Rita in a state quarterfinal. … New Trier boys volleyball coach Sue Ellen Haak’s career record, in 17 seasons at the school, is 488-162 (.751). Her team’s 34-8 record this spring was the program’s fifth straight season with at least 30 victories. …. New Trier and eventual state champion Lincoln-Way East met for the third straight year at state last weekend. NT beat L-WE in a three-set quarterfinal en route to its runner-up finish in 2016. “They grow the kids huge up there,” Griffins boys volleyball coach Kristopher Fiore said last weekend, referring to 6-foot-6 D’Attomo, 6-6 senior middle James Snyder, 6-5 Brown and four 6-4 Trevians. “It’s a team with huge blockers, and it’s always physical, always strong.” … Snyder, after NT’s semifinal loss to LW-E: “We fought hard. I’m proud of the way we played. No shame, no shame.

But it’s a bummer.” … Haak, on her 2018 club: “High-quality guys, with a lot of role models.

The team was never satisfied, always pushing to get better.”

Fr. Back Looks Forward

The 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City killed nearly 170 people and destroyed onethird of the building.

The blast obliterated or damaged 324 other buildings.

One of the damaged structures was St. Paul’s Cathedral, seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. The Rev. George Back was serving as dean at St. Paul’s at the time of the domestic terrorist attack.

His son, the Rev. Luke Back, sits across from me in an Egg Harbor Café booth in Lake Forest on a morning in May and says grace before gently puncturing his eggs over medium.

Fr. Back — rector at The Church of the Holy Spirit (Episcopal) in Lake Forest since March 17 — had a front-pew view of the cathedral’s rehabilitation and expansion after the bombing.

“My father,” the 45-year-old Back recalls, “picked up the pieces, helped people heal. I watched him. I admired his work. He did a wonderful job, overseeing the restoration and enhancement of a beautiful cathedral, and he did it all through love.

“That was a pivotal time in my life, and it impacted me significantly, essentially leading me to a vocation I truly love. Life as a priest has been a life full of surprises for me, mostly good ones, some not so good. But that’s life, isn’t it?”

Fr. Back was called to The Church of the Holy Spirit after spending more than seven years as rector of The Church of the Heavenly Rest in Abilene, Texas.

“It is not a funeral home,” a smiling Back cracks in his lilting southern accent.

Back, as a three-sport (baseball, football, swimming) athlete at Casady School, an Episcopal day school in Oklahoma City, found time to bury his head in books, perhaps none more challenging — and enlightening — than Fyodor Dostoevsky ’s The Brothers Karamazov.

“My favorite English teacher,” Back says, “taught me how to find gold in literature.”

Back, whose older sister, Elizabeth, has been an Episcopal priest for 22 years, earned a B.A. in 1995 and M.Ed. in 1999 from the University of Oklahoma. There was a time, in his early 20s, when Back thought he would become either a dean of students or a headmaster. A campus setting with dedicated professors and eager students inspired him, comforted him, felt like home.

In his mid-20s he sat down with his father in his parents’ kitchen and shared a list — of possible pursuits.

“At the top of the list I’d written, ‘Maybe go for an MBA, maybe go for a Ph.D.,’ ” Back says. “At the bottom of it was, ‘Thinking about attending seminary.’ ” The son looked up from his list.

The son’s eyes met his father’s eyes.

Fr. George Back replied, “You’d be a good priest.”

The words heartened Luke Back.

Lifted him.

“Huge affirmation for me, hearing my father react the way he did,” Back says.

“He then told me, ‘If you’re serious, we have to tell your mother [Margaret].’

I told my mother at dinner, and she was very positive, very supportive.”

The son received his Master of Divinity at Virginia Theological Seminary in 2002. A cathedral then called him to serve as canon and, later, as priestin-charge.

The cathedral?

None other than St. Paul’s in Oklahoma City.

“I reported to my father,” Back says. “The best; he was the best boss.”

That was a pivotal time in my life, and it impacted me significantly, essentially leading me to a vocation I truly love.

Back was in seminary when he met his future wife, Meredith, at a wedding rehearsal. Both had been assigned to sit at a table for single men and women only. Meredith was an architect student at the University of Texas.

“We hit it off, right away,” says Back, whose three children with Meredith are 13-year-old Louisa and 11-year-old identical twins Joshua and Simon. “She does some architecture work now; she likes the business side of the industry.

Meredith is a great artist who has a great mind for mathematics.”

The 12th rector at The Church of the Holy Spirit and his family live in Lake Forest, with his parents set to move to Lake Bluff this month. One Fr. Back can’t wait to welcome his mother and another Fr. Back to Lake County.

“We love this area, love the schools,” says Back, a self-dubbed “Dugout Dad” for the Red Sox of the Lake Bluff Youth Baseball Association. “It’s a high-quality community with warm people everywhere.

It felt like a good match when we arrived, and it still does. A lot of people are praying for me. I’m saying, ‘Thank you,’ a lot, and I’m saying, ‘I’m sorry,’ a lot. My focus for my parish is the church’s mission — ‘Love God, love neighbors, love self.’

“Church,” he adds, “is a place to bury your burdens, a place to share our celebrations. Being a part of a community, surrounded by loving and caring people, is always better than going at it in isolation.”
