Meyers previously visited Washington, D.C. for one day, he recalled. He visited the Arlington National Cemetery and the Washington Monument. On this trip, he said, he looks forward to seeing not only the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, but all of the memorials as an expression of his appreciation for his brethren from other wars.

“I’ve seen the traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial,” he said. “I found my captain’s name on the wall.”

Myers, who lives in Beach Park, Lake County, joined the Marine Corp. in 1959 and served until 1983. He received several commendations, including a Presidential Unit Citation, a Combat Action Ribbon, and the Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Frame.

He was in Vietnam in 1965 and came home in 1968, when anti-war sentiment in America was rising and there were protests across the country. “When we were getting ready to fly back to our homes, we weren’t allowed to wear our uniforms,” he said. “We had to change into civilian clothes.”

“It didn’t really bother me much,” he adds.

The Honor Flight trips are a way to honor and show appreciation for this country’s veterans, said Paula Carballido, president of Lake County Honor Flight, which she founded in 2013. As the former president of the Exchange Club of North Chicago, she had come up with a similar concept after befriending Frank Wortham, a member of the World War II Black Navy Veterans of Great Lakes, which was responsible for erecting a memorial in North Chicago to the first 13 African American Navy officers.

In addition to volunteer work, the two had in common that neither had ever visited Washington, D.C. In 2011, while passing out Thanksgiving dinners at a church, they discussed the recently unveiled Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and thought it would be a good idea to see it.

Wortham suggested they ask other vets to join them, and five others signed up; two who served in WWII, two in Vietnam, one from the Gulf War, and one from the Korean War. Honor Flight is a national organization that focuses its efforts on WWII veterans, of which an estimated 640 die each day. Highland Park resident

Rachel Schulman, along with her brother and sister, traveled to Washington, D.C. to join her father, David Reagler, then 88, when he accompanied an Arkansas Honor Flight hub. It would be his last trip before he passed away, Schulman said.

Her father served in the 99th Division, Infantry Company, 394th Regiment, and was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge.

Though his 2013 trip coincided with the government shutdown that resulted in some of the monuments having to be scrapped from the itinerary, he did get to visit the World War II memorial.

“It was his last hurrah,” she said.

“From the time the plane landed and they were greeted with a band to the time it took off (to return home), the veterans were made to feel honored and special.

(Sharing the experience with him) was one of the best days of my life.”

Carballido originally thought the successful inaugural trip would be “a one-time adventure,” she said with a laugh. “But I thought, ‘Let’s see where this goes.’” It went from one trip with six vets to three trips annually with up to 23 vets (plus their guardians) at a time. The vets travel for free. The guardians— usually a family member—pay their own way.

Carballido, 34, does not come from a military family. She has lived in North Chicago for five years and immersed herself in community service. “I’ve met a lot of people I fell in love with and one of those groups was the black WWII veterans who had such great stories to share,” she said. “I was the last person to see Frank Wortham before he passed.

He told me, ‘Don’t let anybody forget about us.’ That stuck with me. I took that and ran with it.”

The trips are highly emotional, she said. “Many of the Vietnam vets, especially, get something they thought they never would, a sense that there are people like myself who do care about them.

I’ve had vets who take medication for depression or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder share with me that that during the trip they did not feel the need to take their medication and for the first time in years got a good night’s sleep. “(It’s my hope) that they can let these memories of the Honor Flight experience into their hearts and slowly painful ones can fade away.”

New Sunset Ridge school like a ‘Google for kids’

he brand new Sunset Ridge School in Northfield is complete, just in time for the new academic year. Located where a one-room schoolhouse once stood in 1892, the school is a now up and running, serving approximately 300 students in fourth through eighth grade.

On September 12, Northfield School District 29 held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony, welcoming the community to explore the brand-new facilities. In a festive atmosphere where the school band and orchestra played The Star Spangle Banner, administrators thanked everyone involved in the project.

While construction began on April 12, 2016, planning for the new school started in the fall of 2014. Constructed where soccer fields used to be located, the new school replaces a building that was originally constructed in 1930 and badly in need of costly repairs.

ment, and historic preservation items. The district avoided tax increases by utilizing $2 million in reserves and financing approximately $25 million through

a 20-year capital lease.

The new, 70,000-square-foot school is about the same size as the old school, but it is flexible by design to meet the needs of

modern learning. Attention to detail can be found throughout, such as the parent drop-off station at the building’s entrance, and the indoor living wall that includes a cascade of plants.

The layout is centered on a “village square” concept, which includes a high school regulation-size gymnasium, dining, performance space, and library.

An outdoor common space sits at the center of the school, where picnic tables and playground equipment are located.

An open concept keeps the performance, dining and library spaces interconnected. A reading loft on the second story overlooks the library on the first floor.

All of the classrooms have glass windows facing the halls, allowing anyone to get a glimpse of what is happening inside.

Each of the academic wings include small-group rooms for breakout learning, as well as living rooms in the hallways.

These common spaces have couches and comfy chairs, where students can work outside of the

classrooms.

Aimee and Rich Keefer, who toured the building with their sons in fifth and seventh grade, liked the new hallway common spaces. “The living rooms are a great way to take the kids out of the classroom where they may have lost focus,” Aimee said. To her husband, it looked like a high-tech office space. “It’s like Google for kids,” he remarked.

While the forward-thinking design brings Sunset Ridge into the 21st century, the “Legacy Room” is an effort to honor the past. The walls of the room were constructed from wood from the old Sunset Ridge School.

Likewise, stained glass windows from the old school decorate the library.

Jessica Akaah toured the school with her four children who are in third grade, kindergarten and preschool. She said she liked the outdoor and small group spaces, and that the building is LEED certified.

“I think it is amazing,” she said.

field of 156 amateurs, many from the North Shore, joined 52 of the world’s best professional golfers for a round at Conway Farms Golf Club the day before the BMW Championships began.

The amateurs joined professionals such as Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth in the annual Pro-Am preceding the opening of the BMW tournament on September 13 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, netting more than $1 million for the Evans Scholars Foundation.

The groups ranged from business colleagues, longtime friends and family members sharing a round with professionals who are among the world’s 70 highest ranked.

One of those groups included brothers Bill Terlato and John Terlato of Lake Forest and Tony Terlato, Bill Terlato’s son, who grew up in Lake Forest but now lives in Chicago. All three are part of the Terlato Wine Group, a

family owned company in Lake Bluff that owns vineyards and wineries worldwide and imports, exports and markets wine. They said all the wine sold and served at the tournament is a Terlato brand.

Both Bill Terlato and John Terlato have played in several pro am tournaments. “All this helps the Evans Scholars,” said Bill

Terlato. “We’ve been doing this a long time and we want to help in any way we can.”

The Terlatos played with Russell Henley, the world’s 23rd ranked golfer according to the Fed Ex Cup standings. Tony Terlato, who joined the company in January, was playing in his first pro-am.

“I was a little nervous at first,”

Tony Terlato said of playing with Henley. “He was really great to play with. He encouraged us and told us when we hit good shots.”

While BMW is the tournament’s corporate sponsor, the tournament is run by the Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation based in Golf, near Glenview. The foundation has funded the college education of

more than 900 students.

Entry to the tournament required a minimum donation of $11,000 from an individual or $31,500 for a group of three. Some of the amateurs contributed more.

Amateurs who chose to go to the pairing party held early in tournament week got to pick their pro through a lottery, according to John Terlato. They took Henley when it was their turn. Those who were not in attendance were assigned a professional partner by the WGA when their Ping-Pong ball is drawn Ted Koenig of Highland Park played with Keegan Bradley, the world’s 48th ranked player. Koenig said he is a customer of The Private Bank and played as the company’s guest. He too was a little nervous and was wowed by the way Bradley hit the ball.

“When their ball comes off the club you hear it sizzle,” said Koenig. “I just focused on my game and had fun.”

Koenig said he gave no tips to Bradley, and the pro did not try to alter the games of the amateurs.

Ron Bliwas of Highland Park

entered the tournament as a guest of Craig Duchossois. The two have played in several pro-am tournaments together over the years.

They played with Justin Rose, the world’s 17th ranked player. They did offer tips to each other.

“He gave us a few tips, said Bliwas. “I told him some restaurants to try,” he added when asked what advice he offered Rose.

Rodrick Cappiello of Wilmette, who played with 39th ranked Tony Finau, was living a dream, according to his wife, Gretchen Capiello. She said he got the opportunity to play through his company, CDW. Gretchen Capiello made it a family affair.

“I took the kids out of school so they could see their dad play,” said Gretchen Capiello. “We saw Sergio (Garcia) and he signed my son’s ball,” she added pointing to an oversized golf ball the boy carried to collect autographs.

BMW also added to the donations for the Evans foundation.

The company contributed $50,000, according to an email from the WGA.

ew Trier senior special teamer and defensive back Jacob Levy knew exactly what do when Conant’s punter turned into an on-thefly quarterback on a fourth down in the second quarter of a football game last weekend: Get into attack mode.

“I saw his hand go up, preparing to pass,” Levy said.

“Then I went after the pass.

We’re told, ‘Attack the ball, attack the hands [of the intended receiver].’ ” Levy’s alertness and aggressiveness resulted in an interception — his first of two picks in a 10-7 defeat of Conant in Hoffman Estates on Sept. 15.

Parts of Levy’s body attacked Levy moments before his second interception at 5:14 of the third quarter, with the teams locked in a 7-7 tie.

Shafir a sure-fire hit on the course Fun-loving Highland Park High School golfer has become fiercely competitive

J

ulia Shafir nearly walked away f rom golf this fall — after holing a bunker shot to save par on a par-3 at Bonnie Dundee Golf Club in Carpentersville.

“On my first attempt to get out of the trap, my ball remained right there, in the trap,” recalls Shafir, a Highland Park High School junior in her third year on varsity.

“I thought to myself, ‘OK, fine.’ I was in a good mood. “ When I chipped it again and it rolled in, another thought crossed my mind.”

The thought?

“That I should quit right n o w, ” t h e e ve r - c h e e r f u l Shafir says with a laugh.

The lefty chose to stick around instead, much to the delight of her coach, Cathy Nachman, and her teammates.

“G utsy and fear less, a fierce competitor,” Nachman says of Shafir, who advanced to a Class AA sectional meet last fall and finished in a tie for seventh place, with a 78, at the Lake County Invitational at Bonnie Dundee on Aug. 19. “There’s a determination there, and it ’s not going to go away as long as she’s anywhere near a golf course.

“Julia,” the coach adds, “is never satisfied; nobody on this team is. Julia wants it.

Wants to succeed.”

Shafir had eagled the hole before that par-saving act f rom a mini beach near a green. She also eagled the penultimate hole of her ninehole round of 42 in a dual with L ake Forest High School at Highland Park Country Club on Sept. 11. A black belt in Taekwondo at the age of 10, Shafir tamed the final three holes that day w i t h a b i rd i e - e a g l e - p a r Jireugi (punch, in Taekwondo circ les) in HP ’s 173-189 victory.

“Julia loves the game and practices it so much, even on our off days,” says HPHS senior Lexi Kovitz, another 2016 Class AA sectional qualifier and a Giant who carded a fifth-place 83 to tie junior teammate Jennifer Berardi for team-best honors at the Deerfield Invite on S ept. 16. “Her drives … they ’re consistent, and she hits them far.

“I like how positive she is; if she hits a bad shot, she gets over it quickly. W hen I’m around her, when we’re all around her, Julia keeps us laughing with her bubbly personality.”

Shafir and golf wasn’t a good match at the beginning.

Her mother, Marina, had encouraged a 10-year-old Julia to pursue the sport, and Marina’s boyf riend, Charles (a W innetkan and a New Trier graduate), later introduced the game to her.

“Hated it at first,” Shafir admits. “Those first two years were rough.”

In the summer before her f reshman year, Shafir warmed up to golf. Shots went where she wanted them go. Putts fell.

Her confidence grew.

Sessions — with golf instructors and a mindfulness coach — followed at The Golf Practice in Highland Park. She honed her approach shots one day and learned all about the importance of connecting with the atmosphere at a golf course the next day.

“Golf has taught me to be c alm and mindful, ” say s Shafir, who also shot medalist rounds of 40, 42 and 40 in duals with Vernon Hills High School, Carmel Catholic and Maine West, respectively, this fall. “You have to be organized as a golfer; being organized in golf has helped me in other areas in life.

“And I have a lot of respect for golf and for those who play the game.”

Her reaction to one of her eagles this season backed that up.

“Gave a lefty fist pump, nothing too emotional,” says Shafir, who, if the opportunity arises, would love to play golf at the collegiate level.

“Kept myself humble,” she adds.

One of Shafir’s favorite all-time drives has nothing to do with either a tee or a club — and everything to do with fuel and wheels and the ensuing experience.

A trip to Chicago, either with f riends or with her boyf r iend ( Wyatt Harr is, a

senior at Deerfield High School), never fails to thrill Shafir.

“There’s nothing more exciting than to be in that city with all those people, surrounded by all of those big buildings,” she says. “And it ’s really fun when you get to spend time down there with your f riends.

“I love hanging out with my f riends; I know every teen says that, but it ’s true.”

Notable: Highland Park High School’s girls golf team shot a season-low in its 165-172 defeat of host Glenbrook North at Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook on Sept. 13, improving to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the Central S uburban L eague Nor th.

Giants junior Jennifer Berardi, with a round of 39, shared medalist honors with Glenbrook North’s Ashley Choi. Scores f rom junior Julia Shafir (40), senior Lexi Kovitz (42) and f reshman Samantha Fahn (44) also counted for HPHS. Berardi’s performance was the Giants’ first sub-40 round this fall.

Kovitz came through with the second, touring the home course in only 38 strokes in a 158-164 loss to New Trier on Sept. 18. It was the Giants’ final dual meet of 2017. “Lexi goes out in style,” HP coach Cathy Nachman said. Kovitz shook off a double bogey on the first hole and finished the last eight holes with six pars, a b o g e y a n d a b i rd i e . “ Working diligently on her game, L exi bounced back after the first hole,” the coach added. New Trier’s Lizzie Kenter earned medalist honors with an even-par 36 at HPCC. … The Giants placed third (347) at the Deerfield Invite on Sept. 16.

Driving and striving There’s no doubting the athleticism of Lake Forest High School’s Thomas

The same Jed Thomas — a Lake Forest High School senior — sinks basketball shots in the winter.

A standout golfer who’s also a fine point guard in hoops?

Not normal.

Normal is a ver y good hockey player ripping a lengthy drive off a tee. Or an ace tennis player with a twohanded backhand connecting for a triple down the rightfield line in a pickup softball game at a family reunion.

“The best athlete on our team, in every way,” Scouts golf coach Jim Matheson says of the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Thomas, who pays attention to what reigning PGA Champ i on s h i p w i n n e r J u s t i n Thomas does on golf courses and to what new Cleveland C a v a l i e r s g u a rd I s a i a h Thomas does on basketball courts.

“Jed,” the coach adds, “hits it a long way. He has a power game, for sure. The shots he hits with his hybrid — they go as far as the shots others hit with a driver. Jed did a good job juggling his commitments to golf and basketball during the summer. [Scouts varsity basketball coach] Phil LaScala was great; he was on board with Jed playing both sports in the months leading up to the start of his senior year.”

After finishing runner-up, with a 75, at the North Suburban Conference Meet and shooting a 71 — one stroke behind medalist and 2017 LFHS graduate Jason Folker — at a Class AA regional at Lake Bluff Golf Club last fall, Thomas averaged 5.1 points, three rebounds and 1.8 assists for the school’s varsity basketball team in the 2016-17 season. He shot 54 percent f rom the field.

In the summer, in between rounds of golf, Thomas dished eight assists in a two-point loss to reigning Class 2A boys basketball state champion Orr High School on the home court. The game, dubbed Net

Justin’s game, was his fearlessness. Other great golfers, like Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, play without fear.”

But can they deliver a right-on bounce pass on a fast break or hit a clutch shot from three-point range?

New Trier’s Tir turns in stellar effort at Hickory Point I

t’s pretty safe to say that she’s taken a liking to this course.

New Trier junior Penelope Tir turned in another stellar performance at the Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.

Tir claimed medalist honors in a tough field at the Decatur Eisenhower Invite on Sept. 16.

And she did it in impressive fashion. Her 69 edged Loyola Academy standout Nina Rutkowski by two strokes. Barrington star Nicole Ciskowski was third with a 72, one stroke better than her teammate, Caroline Smith.

Team-wise, things couldn’t have been any closer. The two North Shore schools shot 306s with Loyola winning the tiebreaker. Barrington placed third with a 310.

Tir has a great history at Hickory Point, which serves as the Class 2A state course. In 2016, Tir placed fourth at state (145). In 2015, as a freshman, she shared sixth place (153).

NT’s other featured performers in the Eisenhower Invite included Rachel Rhee (tied for 5th, 74) and Audrey Tir (tied for 10th, 79). Lizzie Kenter and Abbie Kaestle added 84s.

LA also had three golfers in the top 10: Rutkowski, Lilly Gentzkow (75) and Mary Boesen (79). The scores of Grace Kryscio (81) and Tatum Koehn (82) also were vital.

Brincks, who led the team in rushing (11 carries, 61 yards), also connected on a 30-yard field goal with no time left in the second quarter and added a twoyard TD run in the third quarter.

Sakos had another solid outing. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 177 yards.

Volpentesta caught three passes for 72 yards, while Noah Shutan made three grabs for 50 yards. Motzko had a 33-yard reception.

The other leading rushers were Jacob Joiner (7-47) and Jared Bloom (7-37).

The collection of talented, amateur musicians — physicians and businessmen, plus Adam Hill (now 30), Dr. Mark’s son — put on scrubs and jammed for medical charities, benefits, service organizations and community events.
