Heartland Animal Shelter hosts its 16th Golden Paw Gala on November 3

LEGEND IN OUR MIDST

We sit down with 2018 Local Legend winner Marian Phelps Pawlick of Lake Bluff to talk about philanthropy, conservation and the art of life

BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

PAWS Chicago has its always-popular Fur Ball coming up on November 9. But here on the North Shore, we have our own version of an elegant affair to raise funds needed to provide shelter, medical care and food for homeless dogs and cats — the Golden Paw Gala. Hosted by Northbrook-based Heartland Animal Shelter, the Golden Paw Gala celebrates its “sweet sixteen” anniversary year when festivities kick off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, at the Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield. Heartland has been dedicated to finding permanent, loving homes for homeless animals since 2002. Founded by Dr. Herbert Preiser, the shelter aims to make a difference by saving the lives of pets who might otherwise be euthanized due to overpopulation. Heartland’s staff and volunteers are committed to giving pets everything they need to be healthy and loved as well as promoting responsible pet ownership. Diane Pathieu of ABC7 Chicago will emcee this year’s festival event. Pet expert Steve Dale — WGN radio personality and host of Steve
