PAWS Chicago has its always-popular Fur Ball coming up on November 9. But here on the North Shore, we have our own version of an elegant affair to raise funds needed to provide shelter, medical care and food for homeless dogs and cats — the Golden Paw Gala.

Hosted by Northbrook-based Heartland Animal Shelter, the Golden Paw Gala celebrates its “sweet sixteen” anniversary year when festivities kick off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, at the Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield. Heartland has been dedicated to finding permanent, loving homes for homeless animals since 2002.

Founded by Dr. Herbert Preiser, the shelter aims to make a difference by saving the lives of pets who might otherwise be euthanized due to overpopulation. Heartland’s staff and volunteers are committed to giving pets everything they need to be healthy and loved as well as promoting responsible pet ownership.

The Local Legends selectee in 2018?

The humble Marian Phelps Pawlick, staunch proponent of conservation efforts, philanthropic endeavors, higher education and the arts, particularly music.

“Music,” she says, “is the language of emotion.”

One thing you quickly learn about Pawlick is her reluctance to talk about her own accomplishments. She is quick to turn the light on others but never on herself. Talk to her longtime friends, and they will tell you things she won’t — like how she was born and raised in Lake Forest and moved to her house in Lake Bluff 30 years ago. Pawlick also has the distinction of being the first woman to chair the board of the Shedd Aquarium and was instrumental in making it the institution it is today.

But perhaps we will leave those untold details to her interviewer, who is none other than Kurtis, one of Pawlick’s friends. Kurtis will evoke insightful and compelling thoughts from Pawlick at the Local Legends event on November 4 with an engaging Q & A at the historical society’s Hunter Family Education Hall in Lake Forest (509 East Deerpath Road).

Picture a cozy, intimate “fireside chat” setting, with two participants before an enthralled audience.

“I hope Bill will be nice to me,” a grinning Pawlick cracks.

Her tenure as “SCUBA Sal”, no doubt, will surface. That was her byline for a travel publication, for which she wrote up resort reviews from all over the world after passing, on her second try (in California), the SCUBA test. Her last dive as SCUBA Sal took place off a coast of Australia.

“I saw whale sharks, huge and gorgeous, and absolutely benign,” she says.

Pawlick and Kurtis—the 2014 Local Legends co-honoree, with wife Donna La Pietra—each has a keen interest in the Abbott Oceanarium at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Completed in 1991, the oceanarium introduced Chicagoans to beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphin and sea otters.

Pawlick’s father, Mason Phelps, did all he could to avoid water —water hazards, that is, as an accomplished golfer in the early 20th century.

Phelps played golf for Yale University and helped the U.S. Olympic golf team capture the gold medal at the 1904 Summer Games in St. Louis. A native of Chicago’s South Side, he launched Pheoll Manufacturing, a premier fastener distributor in the upper Midwest. The business started in one room, above a saloon on Cicero Avenue.

“My father was an unbelievably talented fellow, a self-made man, with a delightful sense of humor,” says Pawlick, the mother of five, the grandmother of 14 and the great grandmother of four. “He earned scholarships, from grade school all the

way to Yale. He assembled several machines into one.”

One of Pawlick’s favorite stories involving her father featured a desperate man during the Great Depression, an attempted robbery and an inspirational ending.

“My father, near where he worked, was accosted by a man with a gun,” Pawlick begins. “My father had just built his factory. The man said, ‘Give me your money.’ You know how my father replied? “He said, ‘I won’t give you money, but I

will give you a job.’”

The man with the gun was a toolmaker. He accepted Mason Phelps’ job offer. He later became a manager … for Mason Phelps’ company.

“I was extremely fortunate, having the parents I had,” Pawlick says, adding her mother, Louise, was “an extraordinary lady” who, on more than one December 25, warmly welcomed friends and local sailors to the Phelps’ Christmas dinner. The table was lengthy enough to seat 16.

“Not one seat was ever empty,” Pawlick says.

Her life today? Full. A founding member of the Deer Path Art League and a Lake Forest College life trustee, Pawlick — a Lake Bluff resident for nearly 30 years — has served on a plethora of boards, including Vassar College’s, Ravinia Festival’s, Shedd Aquarium’s and Art Institute of Chicago’s.

And she travels almost as often as people breathe.

She visited Mongolia in mid-August.

Parkinson’s Sidekicks program connects youth with sufferers

Eighth-grader Lindsey Apple didn’t know much about Parkinson’s disease when she signed up for Sidekicks, a four-week program of workshops that pairs local youths with adults living with Parkinson’s.

Apple, along with some of her friends, was just looking for a way to serve the community. She continues to find the experience an enlightening one.

“They’re a lot like we are, but they express things in different ways,” Apple, a student at Shepard Middle School in Deerfield, says of Parkinson’s sufferers. “Once you get to know them, you realize they’re thinking and feeling the exact same things we are.”

Meaningful artwork — created by Apple, other Sidekicks participants and people with Parkinson’s — will be displayed at a Parkinson’s Sidekicks showcase celebration at Movement Revolution in Deerfield (158 S. Waukegan Road) on November 3. The event, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., culminates the series of workshops.

Northbrook resident Ron Rubin, one of the adult participants, says it’s fun to work on projects with the kids.

“I wanted to see how the kids react,” he says. “I’m just happy to see that these kids want to know what Parkinson’s is all about.”

them.”

The workshops have included projects like Ideascapes, in which the participants tried to depict an ideal world, and Storyprints, for which they traced their hands and contemplated their hopes for the future.

“[People with Parkinson’s] are really friendly and nice once you get to know them,” Apple says, adding the projects illuminate how much everyone in the setting has in common.

Each workshop features an educational seminar and an art project. For Movement Revolution owner

Eric Johnson, who leads the seminars, each has provided an opportunity to generate more social interaction between adults with Parkinson’s and youth.

“We have a gym setting here, but we recognize that it’s not just all about exercise,” Johnson says.

“I thought it was a unique and engaging program for people with Parkinson’s to interact in ways that they normally wouldn’t have. I wasn’t quite sure, before we started, how much interaction there would be. But seeing the relationships that have formed and the developing friendships has been the most rewarding part of it.”

The seminars aim to educate youth about Parkinson’s disease and to erase, or at least chip away at, the stigma associated with the condition. The art projects are designed to foster more conversations between youth and adults.

“It was clear, from the first workshop we did, how much people with Parkinson’s got out of it,” Johnson says. “One, it helped to stimulate their minds. It also gave them opportunities to receive life perspectives from younger people.

“I think it’s therapeutic for them … there’s a social benefit in interacting with children; it puts them in a positive mindset.”

For the youngsters, Johnson adds, it’s healthy to look at life through a different lens. The workshops are supposed to convey the message, among others, that people with Parkinson’s are the same as everybody else is.

“It’s been a great experience,” Apple says. “I highly recommend it. I look forward to doing it again in the future.”

Carve-lous Lake Forest High School’s Rabjohns mixes it up, slices her way to first state singles title in program history

Kiley Rabjohns’ state singles championship in girls tennis last weekend took a back seat to …

Kiley Rabjohns’ composure and to Kiley Rabjohns’ modesty.

How impressive was that?

Consider Rabjohns — a Lake Forest High School sophomore who placed fifth in singles at the Class 2A state tournament last fall — did not lose a set in six state matches last weekend, including her 6-3, 6-3 defeat of West Aurora senior Maria Goheen in the chilly, windy final at Buffalo Grove High School on October 20.

“A better person than she is a tennis player,” Scouts tennis coach Denise Murphy said of Rabjohns, who won all 32 of her matches this season and became the first state singles champ in program history.

“She’s a great teammate, and she’s as humble as they come,” the coach added.

The last LFHS entrant to capture a girls tennis state title was the doubles team of Maddie Lipp/ Christina Zordani in 2012.

Rabjohns was masterful in the singles final last weekend, executing highly effective slices from both sides and finishing points with a deep, flat shot here and a topspin winner there.

She stayed oh-so-low on her whippy slices, often resembling an elite squash player.

The number of racket sports she has played competitively other than tennis: 0.

“Kiley makes slices look like easy shots; they’re not,” Murphy said. “And she’s as mentally strong as she is physically commanding. The slices, her slices … they’re defensive shots, but she uses them to neutralize her opponent and then she flips the point in her favor — with Kiley, all of sudden, becoming the offensive player.”

The weather got downright offensive shortly after Rabjohns had won match point in the final.

A rare form of precipitation, graupel (soft hail), bounced off heads and courts and umpires’ chairs.

“Perfect timing,” a smiling Rabjohns said before recalling how hot the conditions were on the final day of the 2017 state meet.

Lake Forest (22 points) ended up runner-up to Hinsdale Central (23) in the team standings behind Rabjohns’ 14 points; her 6-4, 6-0 quarterfinal win against HC’s Kathryn Treiber on October 19 was worth four team points, with each of her other five victories at state netting two points.

The Scouts’ lone state doubles entrant of junior Nika Belova/sophomore Olivia Wheldon, a 3-4 seed, won twice in the front draw and twice in the back draw. Lake Forest sophomore Cody Avis won a first-round singles match at state on October 18.

Avis warmed up the eventual state singles champ on each of the final two days at state.

practice and every time we hit before matches at state,” said Avis, also one of Rabjohns’ good friends. “She’s great at mixing up her shots, never one to slap most of her shots. I, too, like to work on a variety of shots. Such a great all-around player, Kiley. She was pumped for all of her matches [at state], and she never got nervous.

“One of the great things about Kiley, off the court,” Avis added, “is her refusal to tell anyone how well she did at a tennis tournament.”

Rabjohns’ reticence made an appearance last weekend, but only because people with pens and pads and recorders had asked her to talk about herself — specifically, her win in the championship final. Kiley Rabjohns enjoys talking about Kiley Rabjohns about as often as a trick-or-treater enjoys receiving a rock on Halloween.

But the accommodating Rabjohns described what she had to do to solve Goheen, while praising Goheen’s game, and then quickly and adeptly changed the topic.

“I heard my teammates and my friends cheering,” Rabjohns said. “That was nice. That’s always nice. I don’t react to it during my matches because I want to stay focused. But they help; the cheers definitely help.

“I love this environment.”

Highland Park HS: They earned three match points.

The Giants doubles team of senior Monique Brual and junior Samara Michael experienced all of the above in a Class 2A state doubles semifinal at an indoor facility in Bannockburn last weekend.

Stevenson’s Alaina Kolli/Athena Kolli edged Brual/Michael 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on October 19. Brual/ Michael — seeded No. 2 and doubles partners for three seasons — had entered the match with a 2-0 mark against the pair of Patriots this fall.

But the agonizing loss did not keep the Giants down. They returned the next day, to a court at Buffalo Grove HS, and routed Fremd’s Akari Matsuno/Kyra Emmanouilidis 6-1, 6-1 in the match for third place.

“We were motivated to redeem ourselves, to not end on a bad note,” Michael said. “We played aggressively. We played as hard as we could, knowing this was our last match together as high school teammates.

“We had fun playing doubles. It was a good pairing. We were comfortable with each other.”

downing a pair from Edwardsville 6-2, 6-3 in the third round at state October 18. They then defeated Sarah Badawi/Katie Dollens of eventual state champion Hinsdale Central 6-2, 6-4 in a quarterfinal on October 19.

“An amazing feeling, getting this far, taking third place,” says Brual, who hopes to play college tennis. “I enjoyed playing doubles with Samara, a solid baseliner. Her big forehand — scary. I had to be on my toes, ready to pounce [at the net], after our opponent attempted to return her forehand.”

Michael praised Brual’s all-court game. She also lauded Brual for setting her up often for easy finishes.

“Leaders of our team,” Giants first-year head coach Jig Vora said of the team’s lone doubles qualifiers from the previous weekend’s challenging sectional on the home courts. “Played great.

Had a phenomenal season [25-4 record]. They learned from their losses.”

Highland Park senior No. 1 singles player Caitlin Goldberg ended her fine prep career with a 3-2 mark at state, going 2-1 in the front draw.

Vora’s club finished sixth (16 points) at state — with only two entrants. The top five teams (Hinsdale Central, Lake Forest HS, Stevenson, New Trier and Glenbard West) fielded either three or the maximum four state entrants.

Team Purple takes gold — again NSCD’s girls tennis team tops rival Latin, successfully defends state crown

Alex Bergman got goose bumps last weekend, but they had nothing to do with the plummeting temperatures and brief rounds of graupel (soft hail) storms at last weekend’s Class 1A girls tennis state tournament in Buffalo Grove.

And everything to do with excitement.

North Shore Country Day School’s first-year coach felt them as soon as it became official that her Raiders had netted the program’s second straight state title on October 20.

The squad’s state championship last fall was the first in school history — in any girls sport.

Bergman’s crew last weekend totaled 27 points, well ahead of runner-up Latin School (22), which had edged NSCD 3-2 in a dual and then topped the Raiders at the Independent Schools League meet this fall.

“Latin … it’s always been a strong rival of ours,” said Bergman (NSCD, ’12), a former Raiders varsity tennis player.

North Shore Country Day sophomore Claudia Miller — fourth in singles at state last year — earned runner-up honors as a 3-4 seed at Buffalo Grove High School last weekend. The steady and smart all-court player bowed 6-1, 6-1 to Normal University’s McKenna Schaefbauer in the final on October 20, after having downed top-seeded Megan Heuser of Lakes HS 7-6 (1), 6-0 in a semifinal the previous day.

resident, said of the semifinal match. “I was pretty fired up.”

She was pretty close to her sister and best friend, NSCD freshman Vivian Miller, during the semi (at an indoor facility in Hanover Park) and during the final (at BGHS). How close? Adjacent-court-close.

The second-seeded Vivian Miller ended up finishing fourth in singles.

Vivian Miller, who lost only one game in her first three matches at state, had played doubles for most

of the season.

“That was a big deal,” Bergman said of Vivian’s seed. “We had been a little wary [it would be that high] since she hadn’t played in many singles matches.”

The state seeding committee, well aware of Vivian’s talent and success in United States Tennis Association events, got it right for the most part.

“Vivian,” big sis Claudia said, “was prepared for state; she watched our team compete here last year.”

NSCD’s returning netters welcomed Vivian warmly into the fold in August. The sisters then pushed each other on the court during sparring sessions.

Raiders seniors Alex Arenson, a two-time captain, and Caroline Lommer, a former figure skater, won three of five doubles matches at state for the second year in a row. Consummate leader Arenson praised the Raiders’ young coaching staff for establishing a fun, light team atmosphere in between serious matches. Lommer, whose sister Chiara was an All-Big Ten women’s tennis player at the University of Michigan in 2017-18, came up with the Raiders’ rallying cries this fall, including “Go, Purp” (short for “Purple”) and “Big Raids”.

“I’m known for saying random stuff,” Lommer said.

Less and less random these days: NSCD’s success at girls tennis state meets.

New Trier: The Trevians placed fourth (18 points) at the Class 2A girls state tennis tournament last weekend in Buffalo Grove, falling one point short of trophy territory. Stevenson finished third (19) behind runner-up Lake Forest HS (22) and champion Hinsdale Central (23). New Trier junior Ali Benedetto would have played in a consolation bracket singles semifinal match had officials not cancelled rounds shifted to indoor courts due to inclement weather October 20. NT’s Macy Zaban/Ashtin Hara won three doubles matches in the main draw, while teammates Emily Dale/Lily Bhote split four doubles tests. Trevians sophomore Emma Bhote won a match.

Footing the berth Cekay, Williams connect for unusual TD, seal postseason spot for LFHS grid team

Ryan Cekay last played competitive soccer at that age of 12.

Now a senior wideout on Lake Forest High School’s football team, Cekay’s left foot came in quite handy in a pivotal game last weekend — in an end zone.

With host Stevenson owning a 23-20 lead in the fourth quarter of a regular-season finale October 19, Cekay and junior teammate Jai Williams, a tight end, dashed toward the right third of an end zone. The ball had been snapped at the Patriots’ 12-yard line.

Scouts senior quarterback Tommy Hanson targeted the 6-foot-4, 195-pound Cekay, who had to contend with a pesky defensive back in front of him.

“The pass was a little short,” Cekay recounted. “I think it went off the DB’s back and then off my left foot — straight to Jai.” An alert Williams, stationed to the left of Cekay while watching the play unfold, caught the well-look-what-I-found touchdown pass with 5:25 left.

It was the game-winner.

And the improbable victory, a wild and thrilling 26-23 decision, to Lake Forest (5-4, 5-2 in the North Suburban Conference), which extended its streak of postseason berths to nine with the win.

A loss in Lincolnshire last weekend would have ended the Scouts’ season.

LFHS faces reigning Class 5A champion Phillips in a Class 6A playoff opener October 27 at 1 p.m. at Gately Stadium in Chicago.

Stevenson (6-3, 4-3) led 16-6 at the half last weekend.

“We played more aggressively in the second half,” LF coach Chuck Spagnoli said, pointing to his team’s block of a Stevenson punt early in the third quarter as the play that triggered the visitors’ season-saving resolve.

Senior linebackers Clayton Burton and Will Wisniewski disrupted Stevenson’s punter on the play, which led to a Lake Forest TD (Hanson’s 6-yard toss to junior wideout Breck Nowik) three plays later.

“Four or five others guys also came up big on that punt block,” Spagnoli. “Huge. That block was huge. It changed the momentum, got us going, got our offense going.

“Football,” he added, “is such a team sport.”

Williams recovered the first of Stevenson’s two fumbles after the punt block. The Scouts capitalized each time, getting a 1-yard TD run from sophomore running back Mac Uihlein and that pinball-ish Hanson-to-Cekay-to-Williams TD. The Scouts scored their six first-half points on field goals from juniors Carter Hiam (25yarder) and Kai Kroeger (39-yarder).

Lake Forest junior defensive lineman Rylie Mills played like, well, Rylie Mills, flashing all-state strength and toughness and claiming near full-time residency in Stevenson’s backfield; Scouts senior running back Jacob Thomas paced his team in rushing (16 carries, 52 yards); Hanson completed 11 of 20 passes for 99 yards; Cekay finished with two receptions for a teamhigh 42 yards; and senior DBs Will Freeman and Eddie Scheidler combined for a key tacklefor-loss in the second half, forcing Stevenson to punt on fourth-and-6.

Notable: Senior running back/linebacker Dominick Keating was recognized as the Scouts’ football recipient of an NSC Sportsmanship Award before the start of the LFHS-Stevenson game last weekend.

THE CLINIC’S THE THING

Susan Shulman was a senior economics major at Brandeis (Massachusetts) University when she performed in the play Merrily We Roll Along.

One of the production’s other cast members?

“Some f reshman,” Shulman recalls. “Some freshman named Debra Messing [of future Will & Grace TV fame].

“I had little roles in that play,” adds the 52-year-old resident of Highland Park and former self-described “theater nerd” at Highland Park High School (Class of 1983).

Shulman’s role today, at the Highland ParkHighwood Legal Aid Clinic (HPHLAC), is that of executive director, a position she has held since July 2016.

Or the lead role.

But, shortly after getting comfortable in a booth at Country Kitchen in Highland Park and ordering corned beef hash with an egg over medium, she wants a spotlight more than she wants a utensil. A spotlight isn’t available, so she uses her voice to direct attention to her HPHLAC staff (Managing Attorney Karla Livney; Director of Domestic Violence Practice Marykay Foy; Director of Immigration Law Practice Lia Hyunji Kim; Staff Attorney Matthew Guthrie; Director of Client Services and Bilingual Staff Assistant Alicia De La Cruz; DOJ Accredited Representative Esteban Carbajal; and Paralegal Jan Baranczak.

“My staff is ridiculous,” Shulman gushes. “I could brag about it all day.”

Today at the restaurant is October 18, Day 18 in Domestic Violence Awareness Month. HPHLAC’s mission is to provide pro bono legal services — in the areas of immigration, housing and domestic violence — to low-income individuals who live or work in Highland Park, Highwood or West Deerfield Township. (There are no income requirements for victims of domestic violence). More than 88,000 women in Lake County will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, I learn.

“Domestic violence knows no boundaries; it permeates everywhere,” Shulman says, adding her clinic works on approximately 13 cases involving domestic violence each month.

“Affluent victims come to us, too. In many cases they don’t have money, because their abusers had cut off access to it.”

A mother with a daughter, who had untreated bi-polar symptoms, sought help from the HPHLAC not too long ago. Her perpetratorhusband was under the care of a VA psychiatrist for post-traumatic stress disorder. The clinic helped the mother get an emergency order of protection and worked with her to prepare a Plenary Order to present to a judge. The Plenary Order includes court authority to obtain appropriate care for the daughter, addresses the husband’s need to remain under psychiatric care and prohibits his possession of guns and weapons.

Most of the clinic’s cases each year are immigrationrelated.

“We are the only organization in Lake County that provides pro bono asylum and deportation defense representation,” says Shulman, a former pro bono initiative director of the Chicago-based Public Interest Law Initiative, where she worked with lawyers at law firms and corporations to facilitate increased participation in pro bono legal work and to focus greater attention on the unmet legal needs of low-income individuals.

City of Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering, founder and honorary chair of HPHLAC, created a City of Highland Park Human Services Task Force in 2013. The group of more than 250 volunteers (ages 17-85) assessed needs and inventoried services available.

The Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic was born two years later.

In 2015 the clinic employed a part-time executive director who managed a $60,000 budget and handled 70 cases.

This year?

HPHLAC has a budget of $500,000 and a caseload of 450.

“The clinic would not exist without our communit y ’s suppor t, ” Shulman says. “Our community knows the importance of giving back, and it does so in spades.”

Domestic violence knows no boundaries; it permeates everywhere.

Among the clinic’s partners are A Safe Place, HACES (Hispanic American Community Education and Services), Open Communities and SHALVA. The daughter of Alvin, a retired patent lawyer, and the late Gerry, Shulman grew up in Evanston and lived there until she was 8. In between her time at Brandeis and Northwestern School of Law, she worked in advertising in Connecticut and got involved with the National Council of Jewish Women. Advocacy became one of her passions.

She later spent two years at the ACLU of Illinois, where one of her colleagues was staff attorney Colleen Connell, now the executive director at the ACLU of Illinois.

“She was a mentor, one of my early inspirations in my professional life,” recalls Shulman, the wife of Avery Cohen (a Deerfield High School graduate) and the mother of sons Eli Cohen (a junior computer science/theater double major at Northwestern University) and Nate Cohen (a sophomore football player/track athlete at Highland Park High School).

“I admired Colleen’s management style. It was nurturing. She proved it’s possible to be an effective leader and nurturing at the same time.

“I’ve tried to pattern my leadership style after hers.”

Shulman finds time to do yoga (she did that, hours before our 9 a.m. interview), walk the family dog — the excitable, social Luna — sing at Congregation Solel and watch Eli take the stage and Nate hit the gridiron.

Shulman’s family lives about a mile from Alvin’s house in Highland Park.

“My dad,” Susan Shulman says, “is one of the nicest people I know. Kind, so kind. And he’s a fabulous writer, just like my mom was. My mom had a passion for the arts; I got that from her.”

The former castmate of Debra Messing and the current executive director of an essential clinic in Lake County exits … booth left.
