hen Chicago filmmaker John Davies began doing research for his 2016 television documentary Heroes on Deck, the littleknown story of a World War II aircraft pilot training program that took place on Lake Michigan, he stumbled on an intriguing statistic that sparked a big idea for his next film.

“Possibly as much as 30% of all U.S. material used to support the war effort was manufactured in and around the City of Chicago,” said Davies. “That included a range of items like food, parachutes and tanks.”

Inspired by the notion that Chicago played a unique role in WWII, Davies set to work producing the one-hour documentary A City at War: Chicago narrated by A&E crime show host and Lake County resident Bill Kurtis. After premiering on November 9 at 8 p.m. on WTTW, Chicago’s public television station, the film will air to a national audience next May on Memorial Day. “We’re hoping this will be the first in an eight-part series featuring all the U.S. industrialized cities,” said Davies.

New pot laws rolled around in Springfield

llinois lawmakers are considering proposals that could make ordering marijuana in a pot parlor as simple as requesting a gin and tonic in a bar, but the nonprofit group LEAD and other North Shore officials are trying to extinguish any chance the bills become law.

At a recent summit called “The Blunt Truth” for parents, educators and community leaders on the impact of recreational marijuana, LEAD Executive Director Andy Duran and other speakers summarized the proposed laws and outlined potential modifications.

Both bills—one in the state House of Representatives and the other in the state Senate—mirror each other, are in committee and will not get further consideration until next year, according to Duran.

“Commercialization has been proven to lead to significant increases in youth usage, and there is much evidence to suggest that it will adversely affect public health and safety,” said Duran after the meeting. “Providing increased access to a harmful and addictive substance is not the way to responsibly protect communities.”

If one of the bills becomes law in its current form, it will allow

dispensaries where people 21 and over can buy up to 28 grams at a time, cultivation of up to five plants, and establishments where people can enter and consume marijuana, according to Danielle Franzese, LEAD’s director of policy and outreach.

Unlike medical marijuana, which limits the amount a patient can have within a particular timeframe, Franzese said, the proposed recreational law does nothing to keep someone from buying 28 grams, taking it home and going back for another 28 grams. Duran said 28 grams could make up to 55 marijuana cigarettes.

There is also nothing in the language of the bill that prohibits people under 21 from entering a store or consumption facility even though they cannot make purchases.

“You can keep minors out of a bar but not (out of ) a consumption facility,” said Franzese.

One of the people at the summit was Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim, who opposes legalizing recreational use of marijuana and wants to see it remain a criminal offense.

“With all that we’re doing to stop abuse every day in Lake County we’re seeing an ever increasing problem with addiction,” said Nerheim. “The amount of revenue to be derived is not worth

it.”

As the law is written, it will produce between $300 and $750 million a year in additional revenue for the state, according to state Rep. Kelly Cassidy (DChicago), the author of the house bill.

“Marijuana prohibition, like alcohol prohibition, has failed,” said Cassidy in an email to DailyNorthShore. “Bringing marijuana into line with our taxation and regulation of other similar substances is simply good public policy.”

State Sen. Julie Morrison (DDeerfield) wants to know more before making a judgment on the legislation but will not vote for it simply for the revenue.

“We need to listen to the medical and law enforcement experts who can give us advice,” said Morrison, who was not at the summit, in a DNS telephone interview later in the day. “Legalizing recreational marijuana simply to supplement state revenue is not a good reason.”

Local home rule communities such as Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Highland Park, Deerfield, Wilmette, Glenview and Northbrook can keep most marijuana facilities out of their towns, according to the proposed statute. The exclusion language does not include consumption facilities such as bars.

Future attorney Adams represents Regina Dominican quite well

A

rabella “Bella” Adams’ first language is Serbian, having spoken it for the first five years of her life.

The Regina Dominican High School senior speaks English fluently and has always loved the Spanish language and culture. She studied Chinese for a decade.

Adams created something two years ago that didn’t need a translation.

She drew a smiling woman, with one of the pencils that her art teacher, Mrs. Murray, had given to her as a gift.

The drawing depicted Bella’s mother, Marina, who died when Bella was a first-semester freshman.

“I received so much support from the Regina Dominican community after the death of my mother,” Adams, a Winnetkan, says. “Teachers, my friends, everybody was there for me. My mom was very hardworking, fun

and positive.

“To receive that set of drawing pencils from Mrs. Murray was thoughtful, such a special gift from a sweet person,” she adds.

A visit to Mrs. Murray’s classroom, during a Regina Dominican High School open house, enthralled Adams when she was an eighth-grader and a

hoopster in New Trier’s feeder basketball program.

“I looked around her classroom, and every piece of artwork looked amazing,” Adams recalls.

“A combination of factors made me want to attend Regina; seeing that art was one of them, and shadowing a student for a day was another.”

Adams joined the art club at RDHS and became a member of the school’s National Art Honors Society. She also earned membership in Regina Dominican’s National Honors and National English Honors societies, as well as in the school’s Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica.

The founder of the Alliance Club at RDHS has been a Leadership Institute Scholar at the Wilmette school since her freshman year.

The 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program named Adams a Commended Student, a distinction given to the top five percent of students who took the PSAT/National Merit

Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Her fourth class is Spanish 5 honors. Adams’ final two classes each day are honors psychology and world religions.

The daughter of Joseph and the sister of Vivienne, 14, and Bridget, 11, aims to be an attorney someday. She is particularly interested in immigration law.

“I’ve wanted to be an attorney for as long as I can remember, maybe since the fifth grade,” Adams says. “I would love to be a human or civil rights lawyer.

I’ve always believed strongly in human and civil rights. That should be a given, right?”

“I talk with my aunts once or twice a month,” she says.

“They’re hard-working, strong women.”

Bella Adams found strength in September of her freshman year, shortly after her mother had perished. She found warmth, too, each time she set foot on the RDHS campus.

“I am most proud of keeping up with my schoolwork,” Adams says of her resolve in the wake of tragic news at a young age. “I needed support then, and the people at [RDHS] recognized that and did what they could to help me.”

Bears team up with A Safe Place, seek volunteers to help

S

he had an MBA, a good job and a nice suburban home, but behind the pretty façade lived a dark secret: an abusive husband. His threats to kill her children kept her tethered to the marriage for many years, until she found A Safe Place and with it the strength and encouragement she needed to put herself and her children first.

The woman described her journey on a private, filled-tocapacity bus tour hosted by the Chicago Bears and A Safe Place, the largest domestic violence agency in Lake County. (She requested anonymity to protect her children.) The event on October 24 enabled community leaders to “take a walk in a victim’s shoes” by traveling to an emergency shelter and a family visitation center, and it culminated with dinner at Halas Hall, headquarters of the Chicago Bears.

A Safe Place began 39 years ago. Last year it served more than 14,000 people – a group comprising 80 percent women and 20 percent men.

“People come to the Emergency Shelter in Lake County when they are leaving their relationship and their lives are in danger,” said Pat Davenport,

CEO of the non-profit agency.

The agency’s services and housing programs are located in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Highland Park, Deerfield and other communities in the southern part of the county.

“Many times, victims from these communities do not want to go to a shelter in an unfamiliar area, but feel more comfortable going to a Safe House closer to home,” said Davenport.

In the emergency shelter, the majority of residents are children.

Though the surroundings look warm and inviting, it’s the last place the residents want to be, according to Dr. Ozella R. Barnes, chief operating officer.

“Usually you’re coming with whatever you have on your back, and your little ones,” said Dr. Barnes. “You could be pregnant and it’s usually the worst day of your life.”

The perpetrators usually are fathers, uncles, brothers -- men who will remain present in the lives of children. “We work with the whole cycle to help children who are caught in the middle and are the voices that don’t get heard,” said Dr. Barnes. “A Safe Place provides safer living environments for children and also helps in treating parents.”

Additionally, A Safe Place offers clients individual, family and group counseling. Child

In 2015, A Safe Place helped 13,635 children. In 2016, it was 14,533.

When Daniel felt he was too old to stay in the group, he kept in touch with his friend, now known as “Uncle Gene.”

“We (have) dinners together and his front door is open to me, because we were family at that point,” said Daniel. Davenport added that A Safe Place is always looking for funding and grants to support the mentoring program for boys, and that the organization would like to do a mentoring program for girls as well.

The Family Visitation Center is a safe environment for supervised visitations and monitored child custody exchanges for families with a history of abuse.

“Children sometimes don’t want to come into the visitation room, but this is a safe place where we can plant seeds of hope and change while we watch families rebuild their relationships,” said Lisa Raddatz, director of the center.

Davenport said she has worked in 45 states and 15 countries with many domestic violence agencies, and none of them offer as comprehensive services as A Safe Place. She added that 94 percent of A Safe Place’s clients do not return to their abusers.

hat began as a third grader’s charitable idea has grown in the past 10 years into Pedal Power, a charity started by Wilmette resident Nicole Basil that collects and donates used bicycles.

“My little third grade mind without any limitations said, why don’t we start our own charity?”

Basil, who is now a senior at New Trier Township High School, told DailyNorthShore. Basil and her younger brother were thinking creatively about how to find a home for bicycles they had outgrown.

The first year, Basil was shocked when they collected 250 bicycles at Wilmette’s McKenzie Elementary School playground where she was a student. “That first year I thought we would get 20 or 30 bikes, but they just kept

Upstanding: Holocaust museum’s new holography exhibit brings survivor stories to life

F

ritzie Fritzhall was 13 when she entered Auschwitz, the World War II concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland that the German government constructed to hold and execute Jews and others whom they considered “enemies of the state.”

Her grandfather died in the dank, cramped cattle car en route to the camp, and her younger brothers were sent to the gas chamber soon after arriving there.

In the chaos of the night, trying to adhere to rules being shouted in German (a language the prisoners didn’t speak), Fritzhall told her mother she thought she was expected to be in a different line.

Fritzhall went to a labor camp. Her mother went to the gas chamber.

Fritzhall survived the Holocaust—but she couldn’t talk about her experience at Auschwitz for decades, until she was a grandmother and her son implored her to tell them what happened. Now she is featured in a groundbreaking,

three-dimensional holography film at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, and her story — in her own voice — will survive in perpetuity.

Fritzhall is one of 13 Holocaust survivors featured in holography movies for the Survivor Stories Experience developed by USC Shoah Foundation.The holograms are one of several aspects of the Illinois museum’s new, multimillion dollar Take A Stand Center, an immersive, permanent exhibit on social justice that opened October 29. In Fritzhall’s movie, she appears to be sitting on a stage in a theater at the museum, speaking directly to the audience about her family’s tragic experience. The interactive holograms are programmed to answer up to 30,000 questions from the audience.

Goal by Nicholson helps to ‘Cat’-apult Scouts to state title

at Nicholson, somehow, survived an avalanche in Glenview last weekend.

An avalanche of her Lake Forest High School field hockey teammates, that is. The midfielder and University of Iowa recruit had just scored a goal — a tally, with 10:41 left in regulation, that put the topseeded Scouts up 2-0 in the second half of the Illinois High School Field Hockey state championship game against North Shore Country Day — when all of her on-field teammates swarmed her and seemingly crushed her on the Glenbrook South turf Oct. 28.

It looked a lot like a sea of linemen and linebackers attempting to stop a running back at the goal line.

The big difference: Lake Forest’s “tacklers” smiled.

So did their talented target.

The difference between a 1-0 lead and a 2-0 advantage in an evenly matched field hockey game is huge.

“Had Cat broken a leg during the celebration, she would have fought to keep on playing,” Scouts first-year head coach Cat Catanzaro cracked after LFHS (19-1) successfully defended its title with a 2-0 victory and captured its fourth state championship in six years and 13th overall.

“Cat,” the coach added, “was the heart of this team. The heart and soul of it, actually, on and of the field.”

Nicholson weathered that avalanche on a cloudy, brisk day.

She faced a flurry of NSCD shots on goal in a pivotal stretch in the second half, kicking away a threat at the end of a tense sequence to stymie a game bunch of Raiders (19-3), seeded third and blessed with three Division I recruits — Jessica Hourihane (Ohio State), Xas Morgan (University of Virginia) and goalie Abby Renaud (Northwestern).

FIGHT TO THE FINISH New Trier’s comeback attempt falls short in state playoff loss to Loyola Academy

L

oyola Academy senior lineman Charlie Gross picked up teammate Trevor Cabanban in an end zone and hoisted him abruptly and joyfully last weekend.

Cabanban, a 5-foot-6, 140pound sophomore running back from the Chicago neighborhood of Edgebrook, had just rushed for a 39-yard touchdown — in his varsity debut, no less. The tally gave LA a 27-10 lead in its Class 8A playoff opener against visiting New Trier on Oct. 28 and highlighted Cabanban’s 84-yard day (on 10 carries).

It’s a good thing the 6-5, 280-pound Gross did not let go of Cabanban during the celebration.

Had he done so, Cabanban might still be airborne.

FINDING THEIR RHYTHM Charleston, Scouts find their happy place in first-round playoff win at Riverside-Brookfield

S

hannon Charleston had to be tempted to do a little dance after sacking Riverside-Brookfield quarterback Hunter Hughes for a nine-yard loss on the final play of the third quarter.

Maybe, he could’ve done the Charleston.

Then again, the Lake Forest High School nose tackle knew better.

“I don’t have a dance,” said the 6-foot-1, 259-pound Charleston, flashing a smile as broad as his shoulders pads. “If I did, I’d get yelled at by [Coach Chuck] Spagnoli.”

However, two plays later, the underrated Charleston did do a little shoulder shimmy, when he came off the field after blocking a punt. He was in a celebratory mode.

“My first one,” he said.

Thanks to those two plays — along with a ton more by his teammates — Lake Forest scored a decisive 35-10 victory over host Riverside-Brookfield in the opening round of the Class 6A state playoffs on Oct. 27.

The Scouts (6-4) have found their rhythm. They have won four straight games, and they are officially one step closer to the Big Dance in DeKalb.

On Nov. 4, LF will host Hoffman Estates at 2 p.m. in a second-round game. The Hawks (8-2) defeated visiting De La Salle 34-0 in their playoff opener on Oct. 28.

“I thought we executed all phases of the game tonight,” said Spagnoli. “It’s hard to lose, when you do that.”

And the head coach is proud and maybe even a little tickled to see Charleston playing so well.

“He didn’t play a lot as a junior.

But we’ve always known that he’s had the ability,” Spagnoli said.

“Unless you get out there and play, you don’t know your potential.

“We don’t get a lot of linemen with his kind of size,” the coach added. “So it’s nice to get one.”

The affable and effervescent Charleston plays the game with power and speed. He now has three sacks and eight other tackles for loss on the season.

And that big grin and wide smile? It’s always there, according to teammate Ryan Cekay.

“He’s one of the nicest guys that I know,” said the star receiver. “He’s a happy guy. He’s fun to be around. Always has a smile on his face.”

Cekay, meanwhile, turned in another stellar performance. The speedy wideout was targeted 11 times and caught nine passes for 131 yards.

His best grab of the night — a 38-yarder — came early in the fourth quarter on a well-designed fade route down the middle of the field to put the Scouts up by 25 points with 10:07 left on the game clock.

“I love it when we call passing plays,” said Cekay. “I’ll take as many as I can get.”

His numbers on the season are starting to pop out. The 6-4 junior has made 39 receptions for 657 yards.

His connection with senior quarterback Jack Mislinski (1219-0, 152 yards) certainly was evident against the Bulldogs. This pass-catch duo picked up yards in chunks. Five of their pass plays went for 14 yards or more.

“Our offense has been revamped since the Lake Zurich game [a 27-0 setback in Week

Six],” Cekay said. “Our offensive line [featuring center Andrew Grabemann, guards Justin Noster and Kaden Locy, and tackles Chase Bahr and Augy Cirame] is playing well. We’ve got our running going. We’re complementing one another.”

Senior running back Bryan Ooms came up with a night of oohs and ahs. He took 14 handoffs and gained 128 yards with TD runs of five, 25 and 51 yards.

“Bryan certainly made the most of his opportunities,” said Spagnoli. “He showed off his speed on a couple of those runs.

“And,” the coach added, “give our line credit. On a couple of his runs, Ooms wasn’t even touched.

That tells you that there was some good blocking.”

On the defensive end, the Scouts allowed just 16 rushing yards. And they did that without having star inside linebacker John Deering (injury) on the field.

The leading tacklers were Caleb Durbin (9), Patrick Yale (8), Chris Cavalaris (8), Rylie Mills (6) and Eddie Scheidler (5).

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Mills made his presence known on a number of occasions. He re-

corded two sacks for a combined 19 yards. And he also had a twoyard tackle for loss.

Others coming up with tackles for loss included Yale (2), Cavalaris, Spencer Yauch, Adam Khater and Will Wisniewski.

Yauch also forced a fumble — recovered by Scheidler — early in the second quarter, which led to a nine-yard TD run by Jacob Thomas (19-48).

Scheidler also had two pass breakups, while fellow cornerback Alex Moss intercepted a pass — his second of the season — early in the fourth quarter.

Tough-minded Chody advances to state

our years ago, Lake Forest High School girls cross countr y coach Steve Clegg thought of Brett Chody as The Wonderful Surprise.

Not much has changed.

Chody came up with another inspiring performance at the Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional at Busse Woods on Oct. 30. While enduring intense back pain in half of the race, the LF senior still found a way to take fourth place in this showcase event.

“I wasn’t going to drop out,” said Chody, who ended up with a three-mile time of 17:34.

“The back spasms came in the second half of the race. I was having [shooting] pain every 30 seconds.

“I had to push through it,” the tough-minded distance ace added. “I had to make it to state.”

Before experiencing the back spasms, Chody was in a terrific position to win the race.

She was right there with Barrington’s Jocelyn Long (1st, 16:57), Schaumburg’s Madison Marasco (2nd, 17:00) and Libertyville’s Melissa Manetsch (3rd, 17:02).

A grimacing Chody somehow beat the No. 5 finisher — Barrington’s Molly Fitzpatrick — by seven seconds.

Moments after reaching the finish line, a totally spent — and obviously hurting — Chody was helped out of the finish area by her parents, Lance and Megan.

“I’m kind of mad about it [back spasms],” said a recovered Chody, 15 minutes after the race. “At the starting line, I felt great. My legs felt fresh.”

She had a win on her mind.

“It wasn’t my best race … but it was good enough to get me to state,” said Chody, who is now a four-time state qualifier.

Clegg likes to call this time of year “Chody Time”.

He now has more evidence.

“She just gutted out the second half of the race. She was able to hang on,” Clegg said. “For her not to be on her ‘A’ game and still finish fourth is quite an accomplishment.”

The LF coach has been impressed with Chody from the start.

“Even freshman year, she was running up there with the best people,” said Clegg. “She was The

As a f reshman, Chody helped Lake Forest to a secondplace finish at the Class 2A state meet in Peoria. She was 17th at the Kaneland Sectional and 17th in the state race.

Chody also was outstanding at the 2015 sectional at Busse Woods (5th) and the 2016 sectional at Waukegan (6th).

Chody will be aiming for another high finish at the 2017 state race at Peoria’s Detweiller Park on Nov. 4.

She will be LF’s lone participant. Fellow senior standout Emma Milburn finished 45th at Busse Woods.

Milburn, a two-time all-state cross country runner and sixthplace finisher in the 800 meters at the 2016 state track and field meet, sustained a stress fracture in her foot late in the summer.

“This was only her third race of the season,” said Clegg. “You can’t miss 2/3rds of the season and then show up and beat these kind of runners.

“But she had a strong finish today. She was tenacious at the end,” the coach added. “Emma is a fighter. And I will always think of her that way.”

Woo — an ace student with interests in medicine, art and business — serves as president of the Chinese Club, Art Club, Society of Women Engineers and Medical Chapter. The former state taekwondo champion also leads South’s Key Club, is a co-editor-inchief of Calliope (the school’s literary art magazine) and sings and plays the violin for a group, Angel’s Aid, she founded in 2015. Angel’s Aid performs at local hospitals and nursing homes.

Heartfelt memories of Max fortify foundation

Significantly better.

Her eyes widen above a sweet smile.

Her posture in the booth improves.

Why? It’s time to talk about Max Schewitz.

“Max,” she begins, “was a grab-you-by-the-lapels personality, full of life, adventurous. My son loved reptiles.

Loved them. When he was 10, on a trip to Costa Rica, Max spotted a caiman and inspected it. But in order to inspect it, he had to first take it away from its mother.

“Around people, ” the 64-year-old adds, “he was a … magnet, the sweetest and the nicest and the happiest kid.

Great conversationalist, goodlooking, kind, brave.”

Max Schewitz died on September 29, 2005, after collapsing while working at the Discovery Wildlife Center at Elawa Farm in Lake Forest.

He enjoyed working at the living natural history museum as much as he enjoyed visiting it.

The Lake Forest High School graduate was 20.

Cause of death: a hidden heart condition.

Mary Beth Schewitz, at the urging of her husband, David, launched the Max S c h e w i t z Fo u n d a t i on (MSF) less than a year later and continues to serve as its executive director — even though the former Lake Bluff resident now resides in the city of Marco Island, Florida. Its primar y mission is to conduct EKG tests on students at area high schools and colleges. A painless, noninvasive EKG test, I learn, can detect upwards of 60 percent of the markers of conditions that lead to sudden cardiac

death.

“But an EKG,” Schewitz says, “is not a part of the routine physical for young adults.”

Since the start of the MSF, Schewitz — the mother of Sarah, 35, and Adam, 31 — estimates 1,400 teens or young adults have been recommended for follow-up testing with a cardiologist or a primary care physician based on E KG testing. (For ye a r s t h e on-site tests were f ree; now they cost $15, but s o m e schools absorb t h e cost for

students who cannot afford it). “ There ’s a growing group of m o m s [that is] especially grateful to have their children

alive,” Schewitz writes in a piece entitled, “Passing the Baton” (at heartsmartekg.org).

“Their children had a hidden heart condition uncovered by our EKG screening. Their children’s heart condition was treated so they can celebrate Mother’s Day. Although I doubt they know it, I celebrate their children with them, too!

These kids are incredible.”

MSF typically held EKG testing at eight schools each year; that number swelled to 18 for the 2017-18 academic year. Ninth-graders at New Trier underwent voluntary tests on Oct. 18; Highland Park High School students will have the opportunity to get tested on April 13, 2018.

“We’ve received a range of reactions f rom parents who find out their children should make an appointment for a follow-up exam,” says Schewitz, who ordered decaf coffee and thin pancakes (49er flapjacks). “Some express shock, others indifference.

Then we hear very actionoriented parents who immediately ask, ‘What do we need to do next?’ ” Currently a Chicago Bears fan, Schewitz grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, as the oldest of Bob a n d M a r ge ’s seven children.

The graduate of East De Pe r e H i g h School loved to sew, and she paid for her t u i t i o n ($2,800) every year at nearby S t. Nor ber t College with wages she had earned f rom babysitting and waitressing.

After double major ing in psychology and sociolog y, she landed a job with the National Opinion Resource Center in Green Bay. She

earned her Master’s in Social Work degree at Loyola University in Chicago.

“Calm and forgiving,” Schewitz says of Cal’s endearing qualities.

Max Schewitz, at the age 19, started an animal education business in Coralville, Iowa, a suburb of Iowa City. He named his venture “Max and the Wild Things”. Wild things climbed into Max’s vehicle. Max drove the animals around and showed them off to rapt kids of all ages.

“Max,” his mom says, “was in charge of a traveling mini zoo.”

The Discovery Wildlife Center at Elawa Farm, to the surprise of nobody or no reptile, served as the site of Max Schewitz’s funeral. Nearly 700 folks attended it.

“Throngs and throngs of people,” Mary Beth Schewitz, still marveling, recalls. “I still think of him every day, still converse with him.

“Sometimes, when I’m thinking of Max, I look at my phone, and the time on it is 5:21. It makes me smile.”
