he official 2017 holiday shopping season began before the pumpkin pie was even sliced, leaving less than three weeks to the start of Hanukah and exactly one month to Christmas morning. There are many gifts to buy and social engagements to attend: Where are you going to buy it all … and what are you going to wear? For many time-strapped people, the temptation to shop on-line looms large, but an abundance of independent North Shore clothing stores stocking the hottest holiday trends and unique merchandise means there’s more reason than ever to shop local. In addition to offering personalized services like warm drinks and gift-wrapping, many boutiques go a step further by hosting pre-Christmas shopping parties where clients can leave behind a crib sheet for clueless husbands. At neapolitan collection, Winnetka’s high-end couture clothing boutique, owner Kelly Golden said designers this season are using generous amounts gold, glitter and payette sequins to embellish their

current collections. “Clothes are such an emotional thing,” said Golden. “This last year has been so polarizing and negative. Designers are really trying to pull people out of that. They’re creating something bright and fun to bring us together.” Golden pointed out a black clutch adorned with chainmail style silver squares by The Row, as

well as a hard acrylic glitter-gold clutch by Edie Parker. Another seasonal trend, said Golden, is pale pink, a color previously confined to spring collections. This winter, neapolitan is showcasing a dusty pink shearling hat and matching mittens by Prada on a mannequin near the boutique’s Chestnut Street entrance.

“We’re even seeing people wear white, year round,” said Golden. “The rule is there are no rules.” Golden said neapolitan’s regular clients often give her wish lists to discretely pass along to husbands who pop into the store searching for last-minute holiday gifts. “It helps that we know most of our customers,” said Golden. “We try to offer them some options.”

Gift-givers shopping at neapolitan receive their holiday items in artfully wrapped boxes topped with the boutique’s signature pink grosgrain ribbon. For shoppers looking to purchase simple hostess gifts, neapolitan stocks an in-house brand of lipsticks, formulated by resident makeup artist Melanie Hart NarContinued on PG 10
