marks 50 years with Bagpipes & Bonfire BY ADRIENNE FAWCETT DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
I
t was hot even before the Falbe family of Lake Bluff lit the torch, but the weather didn’t hamper Lake Forest Open Lands Association’s Bagpipes and Bonfire celebration on September 24. Held at the Middlefork Nature Preserve, Bagpipes and Bonfire has raised more than $3.4 million since the tradition began 30 years ago. Some 1,800 people attended, many wearing plaid shorts, pants, dresses and kilts. Tributes were made to board members who have passed away, including Ken Campia; skydivers fell from the sky; Scottish games were played, and bagpipes filled the evening with historic, Lake Forest Open Lands Association board member John Dick stands before the raging fire on September 24. He came up with the idea for the Bagpipes & Bonfire fundraiser 30 years ago. PHOTOGRAPHY BY KERRI SHERMAN mournful tunes.
