Focus on Humanity JEWISH FILM FEST AIMS TO REPAIR THE WORLD THROUGH MOVIES

The 5th Annual JCC Chicago Jewish Film Festival will present more than 31 films, from comedies to documentaries, featuring many local filmmakers.

The festival is partnering with ArcLight Cinemas and Cinemark Theatres to show films in theaters across the city and suburbs, as well as special screenings at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center on weekends from March 1 through March 18.

“There are films about Jewish life, films told through a Jewish lens and films that honor Tikkun Olam, meaning to repair the world,” said Ilene Uhlmann, director of the JCC Chicago Jewish Film Festival.

For example, Shot in the Dark is a documentary about the Orr Academy basketball team in Chicago. Producers Daniel Poneman and Dustin Nakao-Haider graduated from Evanston Township High School. The film deals with murder and how the players seek refuge on the basketball court.

“Though we’ve all read about the Orr basketball team in the news, when you watch a film that’s made by a local filmmaker who really cares about the community, it puts a human face on the issues that affect us all,” said Uhlmann.

“At the JCC Chicago, we’re about building community and enriching lives for the Jewish community as well as the broader community, so the film festival reflects that,” said Uhlmann.

Local filmmaker Julie Smolyansky, president and CEO of Chicago-based LifewayKefir, produced two of the other film festival features that have a social justice theme.

Uhlmann explained that last year the film festival showed a film about a city in Poland where an atrocity was committed after the war.

The filmmaker and protagonist were not Jewish, but JCC Chicago brought them in from Warsaw.

“It’s about Jewish values and what connects us to the human condition,” she said.

For baseball lovers, the film festival is proud to present Heading Home: The Tale of Team

Israel, which follows a team of current and former Jewish Major League Baseball players on their first trip to Israel and their journey to capture Israel’s first baseball championship.

Uhlmann said viewers will see the connection the players make to the land and to the people.

She’s especially excited that this sports documentary will be shown in Chicago, as it’s a “huge baseball town.”

Uhlmann told DailyNorthShore about the student filmmaker competition that began three years ago. The list was narrowed down to 11 films that were submitted from high school, college and post-college filmmakers. A panel of judges will determine the winning 10-minute or less film and those student filmmakers will receive an award.

The underlying theme for all of the films remains the same.

“The premise of the Chicago Jewish Film Festival is human interest and inspiring conversation,” said Uhlmann. “We want to encourage people to leave the theater talking.”

Behind the Scenes at Camp Kesem

Camp Kesem may look like any other summer camp, where campers enjoy activities such as arts and crafts, archery, and singing by the campfire.

But what makes this camp unique is what goes on behind the scenes: Every camper has been effected by a parent with cancer.

Being surrounded by others with a shared experience at Camp Kesem creates a uniquely supportive environment for kids who’ve been through a lot in their young lives. “Everybody gets it and everybody understands at camp,” said Jane Saccaro, CEO of Camp Kesem and Winnetka resident.

Camp Kesem also offers a higher ratio of counselors to campers than most camps, providing plenty of opportunities for campers to share when they are ready.

“There is ample opportunity for kids to open up when they want to and it is at their pace,” Saccaro explained.

After the summer, campers walk away with a strong network of friends, the ability to communicate their feelings, a greater sense of selfesteem, and a tool kit for how to deal with issues going forward.

“They feel that sense of connectedness and that network of support,” Saccaro said.

Another unique aspect of Camp Kesem is that it is free, which is why each year the organization holds a series of four fundraisers across the country, including the upcoming Camp Kesem Magic Ball, which will be held in Chicago on March 10 at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium.

At the event, guests have the opportunity to participate in Camp Kesem traditions, such as

picking out their unique camp name, wearing a friendship bracelet, or creating a luminary bag in honor of someone touched by cancer. This year’s keynote speaker is New York Times best-selling author Kelly Corrigan, whose three daughters attended Camp Kesem.

“It’s an emotional night but the events are really joyful,” Saccaro said.

More than 80 college student volunteers also come to the Magic Ball, sharing their stories from camp. Camp Kesem comprises 105 chapters in 40 states, all organized around college campuses, where college students volunteer as counselors and leaders. Locally, there are chapters at Northwestern University, DePaul University and Northern Illinois University.

Many of the college students get involved because they’ve been effected by cancer themselves.

“By and large they have a personal connection to the experience,” Saccaro said.

“We always need more volunteers because my goal is to have the cats out of their cages every minute the store is open,” said Harcus. “Of course, that’s difficult.”

On a recent weekday morning in the shelter, a playful longhaired gray Maine Coon cat named Beezie frolicked and jumped with his pal Archie, while Highland Park resident Lolly Blank entertained the pair with a laser pointer. Three more sudbued cats named Marshmallow, Butterscotch and Sparkle looked on from a distance.

“I try to tire them out, but the hardest part is putting them back in their cages,” said Blank.

Since the small in-house facility opened three years ago, Harcus and her team have facilitated adoptions for hundreds of homeless cats. After each cat is socialized through Safe House’s fostering program, applications for their adoption are received and personally vetted by Harcus.

“All these cats have been rescued from dire situations,” said Harcus. “I am looking for people who can provide a forever home. That means providing them with medical care and quality food for as long as 20 years…just like having a child.”

Bronze Age continues Glenbrook South’s gymnasts repeat third-place showing at state

Steve Gale’s eyes welled up with proud tears at Palatine High School last weekend.

Glenbrook South’s girls gymnastics coach had just exited the awards ceremony at the state meet on Feb. 17. Gale entered the lobby outside the main gym with his beaming, bouncing Titans and the team’s third-place trophy — the same trophy his program had collected at state last winter.

“I’d been holding my breath since November [the start of the 2017-18 season],” Gale said with a look of relief and satisfaction. “Our girls performed remarkably well this weekend.”

His girls, like the girls on each of the other seven state-qualifying teams, executed 20 routines in the preliminary session on Feb. 16.

Gale had a feeling the quest for the third-place prize last weekend would come down to a threeway Central Suburban League South battle among division sisters Glenbrook South, New Trier and Maine South.

That feeling was spot-on.

Glenbrook South scored 146.6 points to edge fourth-place and reigning CSL South Meet champion New Trier (146.275) and fifth-place Maine South (146.225).

Glenbrook South went 3-2 in duals this winter, with the losses coming against New Trier on Dec. 21 and Maine South on Jan. 11.

“We wanted to go out there and be confident … and we were,” Titans sophomore Jenna Hartley, clutching the third-place hardware and standing next to freshman teammate Sheena Graham, said in the lobby. “Going 20-for-20 was super cool.”

Hartley and Graham had qualified to compete in the vault segment of the finals session on Day 2 of the state meet with respective marks of 9.575 and 9.525 in the prelims on Feb. 16. Hartley ended up in fifth place (9.525) in the event, two spots ahead of Graham (9.5), who later finished seventh on the balance beam with a 9.05.

The last finals competitor on the last event (floor exercise) on the last day of the season was Hartley, who spun a seventh-place (9.475) routine.

Top-five performers in the all-around and in each of the four events received medals.

Graham placed sixth in the all-around (37.15), and Hartley wound up ninth (37.05).

Graham was more eager to praise and thank her older teammates than she was to take credit for any of her 9-plus routines.

“Our captains [seniors Bebe Haramaras and Kylie Kruger, bound for DePaul University] were great all season, reminding all of us to work hard and giving us pep talks,” Graham said. “Bebe knew exactly what to say and exactly how to say it to each of us before a routine, and Kylie, I’m going to remember her laughter, her friendliness.

“Our team grew super close this whole week.

We got to know each other better.”

Haramaras — host, along with the rest of her family, of the team’s post-state sleepover bash on Feb. 17 — proved valuable as a leader and a performer from the season opener until the last session at state, all while dealing with an injured right ankle that will require surgery. No way was she going to miss helping her Titans go for another state trophy in her final prep season. Gritty Hara-

Graham and 11 other gymnasts advanced to the finals session on beam. Haramaras — yes, Haramaras — made it, too, with a 9.225 prelim mark.

You normally need two sturdy ankles to succeed atop the unforgiving log.

Captain Bebe capped her career with a 10thplace showing on beam (8.65), after making a nice balancing save at the end of her first flight series.

“We’ll all miss Bebe,” Hartley said.

Junior Sarah Healy, sophomore Emily Wyngarden and freshmen Elena Pauker and Sydney Willits also competed for Glenbrook South at state.

The Titans’ state trophy was the program’s third.

Glenbrook South finished third at state in the 1978-79 season before completing the back-toback bronze feat last weekend.

“The girls did what they needed to do,” Gale said. “Good things happen when you do your job, right? Well, each of our girls did her job. I’m happy for the girls, happy for the team.

“We had such a close team, a tight-knit team.

Notable: Other members of Glenbrook South’s girls varsity gymnastics team this winter were junior Chloe Nourbash, sophomore Isabel Garvey and freshman Maggie Wills. … Alan Hirsch, Laura Koehler and Kurt Waller served as Titans assistant girls gymnastics coaches in 2017-18. … Glenbrook South finished first at the Glenbrook North and Palatine invitationals and third at the Evanston Invite this winter. The Titans won a regional meet on their home mats on Feb. 1 and then topped the field at the Niles North Sectional on Feb. 6. Coach Steve Gale’s girls averaged nearly 146.9 points in their three state series meets. … Titans sophomore Jenna Hartley nailed a 9.8 vault at a regional and matched that stellar vault score at a sectional five days later.

Glenbrook North: Spartans senior Brittany Ullrich finished 28th in the all-around (35.675) at state last weekend, and her teammate, freshman Katie Dahlke, tied for 25th on floor exercise (9.025).

Ace Shapiro Glenbrook North junior earns high marks at Deerfield Sectional

The world is his oyster.

That idiom — from William Shakespeare — comes off as a little trite when describing swimmer Jake Shapiro.

The Glenbrook North junior is ridiculously talented.

His brilliance — standout student, standout swimmer and standout pianist — runs deep.

Ocean-floor deep.

All that. And more. Shapiro also has a winning personality and a keen sense of humor.

Shapiro already has aced the ACT test.

Such a score is perfectly normal for someone in the Shapiro family.

His brother Daniel, who currently is majoring in biology and physics at Yale University, scored a 36 two years ago.

“It was kind of expected [of me],” said Shapiro, who was smart enough to skip eighth grade a few years ago.

He’s the math whiz in the family. As a member

of the Glenbrook North Math Team, he took second place at the 2017 Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) state contest.

“Got four wrong,” said Shapiro. “The firstplace finisher had a perfect score. Nothing I can do about that.”

Last November, Shapiro and some of his GBN classmates competed in the Princeton University Mathematics Competition. He shined again, coming home with a second-place finish in geometry.

His numbers on a swim stat sheet? Just as impressive.

On a day when the Spartans broke seven school records and placed second in the team standings behind Glenbrook South 248-242 at the Deerfield Sectional on Feb. 17, it was Shapiro and fellow teammate Ryan Purdy who stole the show.

Shapiro started his day by setting a school record in the 200 free in a second-place time of

leg in the 200 free relay. He and three of his sidekicks — JuJesca, Daniel Kaufman and Tony Mrozowski — placed third in a state-qualifying time of 1:27.11.

Ziemke expected this kind of success f rom Shapiro, who earned four golds at the CSL North Meet at Maine West on Feb. 10.

“His technique is flawless,” said the GBN coach. “He trains hard. Trains smart.

“He’s a great athlete with a great feel for the water,” Ziemke added.

And his offseason training?

It’s top-notch. He competes with the Glenview Titans Aquatic Club (GTAC) where he receives stroke training from one of the masters: Steve Iida.

He’s got the best of both worlds.

If volunteerism were a sport, Ashley BlanksteinDelaney would have the equivalent of more than a few Olympic gold medals, at least a pair of Heisman trophies, a closetful of green jackets, and Vince Lombardi trophies tackling a Stanley Cup or two on a mantel in her house in Glenview.

Then again, she’d probably end up giving each prize away to brighten others’ lives.

“It’s in my blood, to give back by being super involved in many organizations,” says BlanksteinDelaney, a life winner and the highly engaging

Strong Kids Fund, which makes Y program accessible to families in need.

The event plans to honor a couple of North Shore gems with the Thiel Award for Leadership and Social Responsibility at its 12th annual edition March 8 at Pinstripes in Northbrook.

Ashley and Tad ate dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Boston. Ashley cracked the fortune cookie and read the fortune, which was a question: Will you marry me, Ashley?

“Tad had gone to the restaurant in the morning to arrange everything,” Blankstein-Delaney says.

“He put some thought into it. Did some work.

Do you know how hard it is to place a little piece of paper into a cookie?”

They got married in a ceremony held at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“My husband, after a long day of work in a school, still likes to come home and sit down with our boys and help them with their homework,” Blankstein-Delaney says.

“My husband is a saint.”

Who happened to marry one.
