Glenbrooks Hire School Security Experts BY LIBBY ELLIOTT DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
As part of its 2017-18 crisis and emergency planning work, Glenbrooks District 225 administrators have appointed Washington, DC-based external security consultants Facility Engineering Associates to undertake an assessment of existing safety and security practices at Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools. The $10,000 contract was announced at a D-225 Facilities Committee meeting on February 16. The meeting was held to review bids received from contractors for 2018 life safety projects approved by the Board of Education in fall 2017, including the replacement of the fire alarm system at Glenbrook South with a new digital emergency notification system. “The district administration felt that the use of a consulting firm with expertise and experience in the areas of safety and security would ensure that the potential security projects being considered were reflective of best practices and current industry standards,” said D225 superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle. “The district will also be consulting with the police and fire departments of Glenview and Northbrook on all security projects.” According to Dr. Riggle, Facility Engineering Associates has worked previously for District 225 and was recommended by district architects as well as the Secondary School Cooperative Risk Management Program (SSCRMP) consortium Continued on PG 5
March is Madness for Irish Dancers BY LIBBY ELLIOTT DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
This month, a team of young champion dancers from Sheila Tully’s Academy of Irish Dance in Glenview is diligently putting the finishing touches on the slices, birdies, kick ups, boxes and click backs that, together, form the complex routine they’ll perform at the 2018 Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne. O-Rock-What? Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne is Gaelic for the Irish World Dancing Championships, better known as “Worlds,” taking place in Glasgow from March 24- April 1. Sometimes referred to as the Olympics of Irish Dance, Worlds has been held annually in cities throughout Britain, Ireland and North America for more than 40 years. The competition regularly draws around 5,000 competitors and 25,000 spectators from 30-plus countries. This year in Glasgow—the host of Worlds on four previous occasions—officials estimate the weeklong international event will boost the local economy to the tune of £14million.
