Editor’s Note
STYLE IS significant. I am not referring to that mercurial, market driven beast named fashion. Fashion is an external influence, but style … style comes from within us. All of us. Leadership style, parenting style, and communication style are just a few examples of how it informs and reflects who we are. Sartorial expression does play a role in our style as well—however big or small depends on the wearer. Clothing can be comfort, armor, art, or afterthought. Whether one chooses a quiet, understated daily uniform or embraces a more exuberant, embellished way, this expression undeniably conveys individuality.
Leadership style and how one manages and motivates can be the most important factor in how an organization performs and, more importantly, how it overcomes challenges. In this month’s feature, “The Great Communicator,” we learn why the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff recently named Dr. Eugene Hotchkiss, who served as President of Lake Forest College from 1970-1993, as its 2020 Local Legend. Known as a gentle and natural leader, Hotchkiss navigated significant difficulties, breathing new to life into the oncestruggling institution.
In “A Legacy of Change,” Allendale Shelter Club President Laura Torosian shares how its board does not simply raise much needed funds for Allendale Association, a local nonprofit organization invested in the care, treatment, education, and advocacy for children and youth with serious emotional, mental, and behavioral health challenges. Founded in 1906 by 16 women, the Shelter Club—which has grown to more than 60 women and contributed more than $13 million over the years—also provides the ‘mother’s touch’ that is missing for many of the children utilizing Allendale’s services. The board’s unique style provides both crucial funding and loving, indefatigable support.
Connection to nature is one of the extraordinary benefits of living in our community. Local lovers of the great outdoors have long appreciated Lake Forest Open Land Association’s hundreds of acres of
public nature preserves. In our feature “Always Open,” we reveal that this year, the organization’s beloved autumn event, “Bagpipes & Bonfire,” is thoughtfully re-imagined to allow a healthy celebration in the COVID-19 era. Supporting this cornerstone fundraiser will help LFOLA with its continued conservation and community enjoyment missions. “Beneath all the changes this year, the spirit still burns bright. The pipers will still play and the tradition will continue,” shares LFOLA Chair Fred Wacker. In keeping with the “Bagpipes & Bonfire” spirit, I can’t wait to break out the celebratory autumnal plaids.
Lake Forest Open Land’s Mellody Farm provides the beautiful backdrop for “Easy, Breezy,” Forest & Bluff’s first-ever September style feature. Here, classic woolens meet soft feminine florals, showcasing fresh ways to bridge this warm-into-cool season. I must add that men are not an afterthought in this issue’s aesthetic leanings. Smith’s Men’s Store owners Trey Gonzales and Kip Helverson guest edit The Lifestyle List , providing their top ten fall essentials—from quilted jacket to signature scent.
As the languorous days of summer turn to crisp autumn evenings, I wish you inspiration from these pages highlighting our community’s inimitable landscape and the unique individuals who inhabit it.

HUMAN. NATURE.
Our goal is simple—connect people with nature. In our rapidly changing world, it’s never been more important than right now. Prevailing wisdom and science both tell us the same thing—we need nature as much as nature needs us. Our preserves are ideal for safe physical distancing in nature. And they’re here for you.

SMILE WITH YOUR EYES THE BUZZ
LOCAL BUSINESS owner Jennifer Bobay continually faced challenges finding makeup that was not irritating or harmful to her sensitive skin. Her quest for quality makeup with gentle ingredients led her to launch Jar Bar Makeup in 2014. Bobay’s grandmother, Toni Dauer, would be proud. Dauer—a great source of inspiration to Bobay—was in the beauty industry, cutting and styling hair during the Depression. She believed in the importance of beauty, and shared stories with her granddaughter of clients paying a nickel or dime for a haircut when they had no money. Now it is Bobay who believes in the importance of beauty as she works through the trying times of COVID-19.
TSE ON THE SQUARE
TSE, the subtle-chic cashmere shop on Lake Forest’s Market Square, is more excited than ever to share its new collection. The company feels especially grateful in today’s current retail climate. “We want thank our Lake Forest community for its incredible support, showing that TSE’s quiet luxury remains strong during these COVID days,” says TSE Sales Director Megan Morris. Founded in 1989, TSE (pronounced “say”) was formed with intention of redefining the use of cashmere and altering the perception that luxury has to be traditional.
TSE’s Pre-Fall 2020 collection reflects the spirit of Morocco. Silhouettes are designed to be artfully and playfully layered— a key element of the collection, which draws
from the spiritual belief of a multi-layered life. It is TSE’s interpretation of how the modern woman lives her life today. Intricate patterns and prints throughout the collection are recognizable as a homage to the complex compositions of Moroccan tiles, as exhibited in stunningly engineered eyelets, hand crochet stitches, and directional digital prints.
As always, TSE continues to redefine the use of its signature yarn, and the collection is grounded on the principle that the caress of cashmere on the skin is true luxury. This season, they created decadent 22-ply layered cashmere pieces and a boiled cashmere blend; an experiential aspect of the collection that must be felt to be fully appreciated.

She believes that taking time for beauty rituals is therapeutic during this uncertain year, and is focused on teaching clients how to wear makeup during this pandemic with everyone’s indispensable accessory—the mask. The attention becomes “glowing skin, defined eyes, full brows, and adding lip liner for less smudging behind the mask,” she says. Her new brow gels, eye liners, and custom face and eye palettes may be exactly what you need. “Wear the mask for other people, but wear your makeup for you,” Bobay declares.

THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS
Robert Kinnucan’s story could begin: How a summer job turned into a multi-million dollar business; or how a love of nature became a lifetime of success and satisfaction; or how one inexperienced tree climber grew his tree care business to be one of the most successful in the Chicago area.
This July, Robert Kinnucan Tree Experts and Landscaping Company, Inc. celebrated its 50-year anniversary. That is quite an accomplishment by any standard, and definitely a time to look back and take stock. There is no doubt that Bob Kinnucan is one of the few entrepreneurs who turned what was initially a summer job into a wildly successful company.
In 1970, Kinnucan returned home to Lake Forest during his summer vacation from the University of Kentucky, where he was studying business administration and economics, and started doing tree care work to help pay for college tuition and living expenses.
“I didn’t have a clue what I was doing,” Kinnucan laughs. “I was young and dumb. I didn’t even know how to properly climb a tree.”
“I hadn’t thought I was going to do this for the rest of my life,” Kinnucan says. “But nevertheless, after I graduated, I thought I’d do this for a little while. At least for the summer and then when fall came, I’d get a real job. But when fall came I had more work, so I thought I’d do it for a few more months and finish up the commitments I had.”

How one young, nature-loving Lake Forester took his summer job to stratospheric heights.
A young Bob Kinnucan working in the trees
“But the work just kept coming, and I decided if I was going to do this, I’d better make a serious commitment. So I went out and started buying more equipment and that’s how the business got started. I went into this full time after I graduated in 1972.”
“In those days, there were not many professional arborists,” Kinnucan says. He decided to take the Illinois Tree Expert exam, which covered all aspects of professional tree care.
As time went on, the business grew, and in the mid-’80s they added landscape design and construction, plant health care, snow removal, and holiday décor to their areas of expertise. In 2016, Kinnucan added structural pest control to their list of services.
“I always knew I’d have my own business—getting a degree in business was extremely helpful in becoming a long-term successful business.” He was an early adaptor of a special climbing technique using a short line in addition to the regular long climbing line that was traditionally used. “This is much safer, as the short rope attaches at the waist allowing you to be secured to the tree at all times,” he explains. “I was also one of the first arborists in the Chicago area to use a STIHL-brand German chainsaw. It’s kind of like driving a Mercedes versus a Chevy.” Today Stihl is the industry standard chainsaw.
Kinnucan, of course, has always loved nature. “That was an important part of why I got into this business. I spent a lot of time hiking, exploring, and enjoying nature in my youth.” He was a proud member of Boy Scout Troop 49 in Lake Forest. “Our troop was very active,” Kinnucan reflects. “We camped out once a month, all year long, regardless of the weather conditions.”
While Kinnucan is still active in the business, he has built a strong management team, which allows him to split his time between Florida and Lake Forest. “Truly, the key to my success
is having great people work for me,” Kinnucan says.
It is no surprise that many of his 50 employees have been with him for decades. One of whom is Kris Bockhaut, who started as office manager twenty years ago and was promoted to vice president in 2015.
“I take pride in the changes and growth we have experienced over the years. We have an outstanding team and every crew member plays an important role in the company’s continued success,” Bockhaut says.
In addition to the amazing team they have in place, Kinnucan is equally grateful to have an incredible and loyal client base. “I have become close friends with so many of them,” Kinnucan says. “Our clients take pride in their homes and landscapes, and that commitment affords us the opportunity to maintain their property at the high level of service they deserve.”
Of course, being in business during the current COVID-19 pandemic presents its own unique set of concerns. “But anyone who’s been in business for this length of time has faced many crises and challenges,” Kinnucan adds.
“Tree work is one of the most dangerous occupations,” Kinnucan says, continuing, “safety has always been a top priority for the company and is a big challenge, especially considering the dangerous equipment, hazardous conditions, and often working in inclement weather.”
Kinnucan greatly appreciates the support of the community, and over the years has donated time, talent, money, and resources to many local projects. Some of them include a recent landscape renovation at Washington Park in Lake Bluff, in conjunction with the Lake Bluff Garden Club; tree care at Forest Park in Lake Forest; tree work at the Lake Forest Beach bluff project; tree care at the park at Deerpath and Green Bay; and the lighting at Lake Bluff Gazebo Park. Kinnucan has been a member of the community for half a century, contributing to the beauty and vitality of the North Shore.“We are looking forward to continuing our efforts for many years to come.”

Co-owners Ted Banick and Brian Carman put delightfully distinctive Highwood bar Teddy O’Brian’s on the block after memorable two-decade run.

Ted Banick
The svelte iteration of Norm from the television sitcom Cheers , a regular at Teddy O’Brian’s in Highwood is a huge fan of the game show Jeopardy! He watches it regularly in the afternoon at the inimitable watering hole on Sheridan Road, and, yes, everybody knows his name.
He answers to “Bob” when he’s nowhere near the tavern known for the crowded rows of picture frames—featuring photos of sports figures and musicians and a range of other iconic entertainers—adorning its walls, as well as its dimly lit bar area, live bands on Sundays, and bean bags flying across the spacious patio.
Inside the bar?
“We call him ‘TV Bob,’ ” Teddy O’Brian’s coowner Ted Banick says. “We usually give him the remote.”
Banick and Brian Carman, a pair of Mundelein residents and buddies since their Deerfield High School days, have decided to click “off” on their 21-year run as co-owners of the haunt formerly known as Rainbows.
“It’s time. It’s time to sell,” Banick, 48, says. “Everything’s changing. The whole world is changing. People are re-evaluating their lives, thinking, ‘How do I want to live, to work, during a time like this?’ Brian and I were young, only 28, when we bought the bar and opened it in late 1999. Maybe young people will buy this from us and put a new spin on it and do it for a long time like we did.
“Our story is a success story,” he adds. “You can’t look at it any other way—two good friends, running a steady business at a spot that isn’t obscure, and living viable lives for two decades. But it’s time to move on, to do something else.”
Marty Jischke, born and raised in Lake Forest, serves as bar manager at Abigail’s in Highland Park. He likes to escape every now and then and absorb life on the other side of a bar at Teddy O’Brian’s.
“When I think of Teddy O’Brian’s I think of the patio and the music, especially the jam band Mr. Blotto,” says Jischke, a three-sport athlete at Lake Forest High School (Class of 1998). I also think of the beer deals and the cheeseburgers, as well as all those great photos on the walls. I love the one of Walter Payton [pranking fellow
Chicago Bears running back Matt Suhey].”
Nobody, to date, has been able to come up with the exact number of walks of life. But plop yourself down from minute-one to closing time any day of the week at Teddy O’Brian’s and you will encounter a substantial majority of the walks, hands down.
“If you drive a $500,000 car or ride only a bike, you’d be able to strike up a conversation with anybody in Teddy’s and feel comfortable for as long as you’re in there,” says Eric Verdonk, a former Lake Bluff resident and another LFHS graduate (Class of ’95). “It’s welcoming. It’s comfortable. The people who work there, the people drinking and eating there, they make you feel right at home as soon as you enter.”
“It’s been a Highwood staple for so long,” continues Verdonk, who bartended at Teddy O’Brian’s for a summer. “There’s nothing like it, and it’s the ideal spot to reunite with old friends.”
How warm and reliable is the ambience at Teddy O’Brian’s, inside and outside? It is that thick-ish, slightly faded college sweatshirt you throw on because familiar threads bring out the relaxed you, the real you.
“It’s a down-and-dirty bar that attracts down-to-earth folks,” sums Banick, who, with Carman, opened the restaurant Caboose in Mundelein in 2008 and remodeled it last year, renaming it Teddy O’Brian’s (it serves more food than its namesake in Highwood does). “For years people have associated our Highwood establishment with good live music and our patio, plus we pour a good drink, reasonably priced. Our vibe is what people like; there’s energy, everywhere. It’s a good place to hang.”
Compelling, throw-back images cover nearly every inch of the bar’s walls. They greet, silently, first-time patrons, who typically feed their eyes and stretch their necks near the walls before they aboutface and think about dousing their palates. There is a black-and-white picture of former Boston Celtics great Larry Bird tangling with former Philadelphia 76ers great Julius Erving. There is a photo of Archie and Edith Bunker, not far from that riveting shot of Michael Jordan in midflight, re-entering the bottom of the stratosphere during a dunk at Chicago Stadium.
Who hasn’t snickered or blurted, “nyuk, nyuk, nyuk” at the sight of Teddy’s framed pic of Stooges Moe, Larry, and Curly?
“I remember when Teddy’s was Rainbows,” Verdonk says. “I love the history of the bar. Ted and Brian added to the history of the bar with each picture they put up on a wall. One of the greatest feelings is the feeling I have as soon as I walk in. That has a lot do with the personalities of the owners and the bartenders.
“When they sell it, it would be unfortunate if the new owner or owners were to change the feel of the place,” he adds. “The feel of Teddy O’Brian’s is what makes Teddy O’Brian’s special.”
Teddy O’Brian’s, 847-926-4475, is located at 432 Sheridan Road in Highwood.

A MONTHLY CELEBRATION OF SEASONAL BLOOMS
THE WARM CAST that nature takes on as we shift into autumn is reflected in September’s guest room arrangement. Summer’s cool brights—pinks, purples, blues—are replaced by deep yellows and soft apricots, warm saffrons and rusted reds. Small, sturdy sunflowers in a rustic vessel anchor this arrangement, while balls of golden drumstick flower (craspedia), coneflower centers, and cranberryhued strawflower add punctuation and staying power. Miniature daisies (bellium) contribute a delightful airiness, preventing the arrangement from becoming too visually weighty.

GONNY’S ZUCCHINI BREAD
42 FOREST & BLUFF THE DISH HOUSE & GARDEN
THIS TIME OF YEAR, gardens and farmers’ markets are abundant with produce. One crop in particular that seems to grow almost overnight is zucchini. There are so many great cooking options with zucchini—you can simply sauté it, make soup, shave it thin for salad, or make stuffed zucchini boats—but my favorite recipe is my grandmother’s zucchini bread.
My grandmother inspired my love of cooking. I remember many summers picking zucchini in her garden, and my job was to grate it
Makes one loaf
• 1 1/2 cups, zucchini, grated and drained (approximately 2 medium zucchini)
• 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 1/2 cup light brown sugar
• 1/2 cup canola oil
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 2 eggs, beaten
• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
• 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar or granulated sugar
1. Wash the zucchini, cut off stem ends, and grate on the larger holes of a box grater. When you have 1 1/2 packed cups, place the grated zucchini in a colander and drain for 30 minutes to an hour. Press down several times to release the juices.
2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a stan-

for the bread. I would pore through her cookbooks and hand-written recipe cards, many stained and marked up with her notes, while we waited for it to bake. Now, like my grandmother, I have a large collection of cookbooks that I pore over, making notes just as she did. There is nothing better than slicing into a fresh loaf of zucchini bread, your kitchen fragrant with the smell of cinnamon, and eating a slice with soft butter and a touch of honey. It is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon snack. You can also spread it with cream cheese and make tea sandwiches to serve on the side of a salad.
dard 9 x 5-inch loaf pan lightly with nonstick spray and lightly flour. Set aside.
3. In a large bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, canola oil, and vanilla. When mixture is well blended, stir in the beaten eggs. Add the grated zucchini and mix to combine.
4. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Add the flour mixture to the wet zucchini mixture and stir until combined. If using, stir in the walnuts.
5. Spoon batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle top with the two tablespoons of turbinado or granulated sugar, then place in the preheated oven. Bake for 50 - 55 minutes, until the top is set and a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
6. L et bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from pan and cool completely on a wire rack.

GARDEN ORNAMENTATION
words by Craig Bergmann, RLA, ASLA
AS I CONTINUE WAXING PROSE on gardens, this month I thought I might take a road less maintenance-demanding than the specialty pruning of plants discussed in August’s piece. Gardening is hard enough—keeping all things alive, growing, and thriving—so when it comes to accessorizing the garden, I really examine the possibilities so I am not adding more work than I need to, and still have a fabulous outcome with any additions to the garden, old or new.
CREATE A FOCUS
A focal point is a great eye-settling element in any space and especially in a garden. This could be a large heritage tree, a beautiful out-building, or a view to a lake or vast open land. Often, our home garden spaces are a bit more intimate in scale and require imported focuses to emphasize the space or to distract an eye from a nearby
ugly. As mentioned last month, espalier trees are a living garden ornament when grown and maintained properly and can make some of the most elegant and whimsical focal points. Now I want to focus on inanimate objects, whether they be stone or metal, collected or assembled, unique or just arranged in an attractive way. A bushel of peaches by the back door on the steps with a few summer pots of geraniums can be all the ornamentation needed and very temporary for sure.
NEVER STOP SHOPPING
Upgrading over time has been inevitable in our garden because we are always shopping for clients and I am always finding new things (or my interests change) over the years. It has been said that the best antiques and garden ornaments are in older folks’ homes or in a designer’s or dealer’s private collection. We are so lucky to live near a metropolis and in an area that has the history of liking fine things.
46 FOREST & BLUFF
IN THE GARDEN HOUSE & GARDEN
Luckily for many, local estate sales are a great source of these fineries as well as the few sales that benefit some of the great causes our city supports, though it is disappointing there are so few of these large sales anymore.
My response to this deficit of sales was to offer selections from my constant shopping trips on our Hortus by Craig Bergmann website. It is so easy to buy more than we can use, and this is a great avenue for folks shopping for just the right thing for their home or garden.
ANTIQUE VS. NEW
I like using old elements when possible to age a new garden. There is often a concern about whether an expensive purchase might be stolen, damaged by our weather extremes, or need winter protection. The way I approach collecting objects for the garden is to mix old and new, particularly when it comes to containers. Our antique planters are only planted in the milder months and then covered or taken in for winter. Another option is to move the more choice items for a different focus on a covered porch or inside a garden room.
A POUND OF PREVENTION
“Frost-proof” containers are just that, but not indestructible. One must remove the soil or place soil in a plastic liner pot to prevent soil expansion during the freeze/thaw cycle. Here, a few more ideas to keep in mind when ornamenting the garden:
• P lace stone or wood shims under objects and containers to keep drainage free underneath and to prevent objects from freezing to
the supporting surface.
• New faux lead or zinc containers and objects can be easily camouflaged with tumbling plants or set in a moist shady area for a while to “grunge” up the surface.
• Remember that metal containers get hotter and colder in our weather, so when you can, use a liner pot or place foam insulation on sides and bottom to mediate temperature extremes on the roots of plants.
• S upport heavy objects with a stable base underneath or you could have a toppling disaster! If it is heavy to move, it needs more than just an assumed patio support. A rule of thumb is to put a concrete support, 12-inch thick minimum, under objects that weigh over 100 pounds. If not, your patio stone or brick will sink over time. When set into the garden, my advice is to use at least 8 inches of compacted gravel for support with a poured concrete pad.

BIG CAT’S WILDCAT
Football standout and 2020 Lake Forest High School graduate Jai Williams is set to pounce as an outside linebacker for Kentucky’s Wildcats.

THE SPORTING LIFE PERSONAL BEST 58 FOREST & BLUFF
THE LAST THING former Chicago Bears offensive tackle James “Big Cat” Williams wanted to be along a high school football sideline last fall was a distraction.
That’s akin to Paul Bunyan wanting to appear inconspicuous in a sandbox.
You see, Williams stood 6-foot-7 and weighed more than 300 pounds when he created countless acres of running room for NFL ball carriers from 1991-2002, and—before agreeing to serve as an assistant varsity football coach at Lake Forest High School in 2019—needed to be assured that his son, LFHS outside linebacker/tight end Jai Williams (Class of 2020), would not lose focus with a certain former Bear roaming around at practices and games.
“Jai and I sat down and had a long conversation,” recalls the father, an assistant football coach at Deerfield High School from 2017-18. “I wanted him to enjoy his senior season, without feeling any pressure to perform well near me.”
Jai (pronounced “Ji”) eased his father’s concerns and welcomed his presence, figuring one of the “100 Greatest Bears of All-Time” would be a good thing—okay, a huge benefit—for the Scouts’ offensive linemen and the team’s quest to earn a 10th straight playoff berth.
A senior co-captain and member of all four special teams, in addition to his linebacker and tight end roles, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Williams helped LFHS (7-5) reach a Class 6A state quarterfinal and earned all-North Suburban Conference honors last fall. He was also chosen to suit up for the Illinois High School All-Star Shrine football game in Bloomington and accepted preferred walk-on status, as an outside linebacker, from the University of Kentucky, a member of the perennially talent-packed Southeastern Conference and a program that
capped an 8-5 season with a Belk Bowl victory in 2019.
Father/“Big Cat” a distraction? Hardly.
“It was cool, having my dad around and seeing him at our games,” Jai says. “I liked seeing him on our sideline each game. My junior year he wasn’t able to attend all of my games because of his commitment to Deerfield’s football team. During games my senior year he’d only give me a hard time, with a look, if I missed a block or didn’t block well on a play.”
James Williams laughs. Yes, he admits, his son certainly understood the messages that “look” must have conveyed in 2019. But James has another confession.
“I’ve been told I have a look as I react to plays in games, but I don’t even know I’m giving the look,” the 2001 Pro Bowler says.
The elder Williams had the good fortune of witnessing one of the most memorable—and most unusual—touchdowns in LFHS history in his final season on Deerfield’s football staff. It secured another postseason berth in 2018. It also involved Jai’s hands and a teammate’s foot, and it took place against Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. Jai scored the gamewinning touchdown on a 12-yard reception in a breathless 26-23 victory, after a pass thrown by Tommy Hanson had glanced off wideout Ryan Cekay’s left wheel in the end zone.
“Right place, right time,” says the modest Jai, refusing to take any credit for being alert and nimble at a pivotal juncture in the fourth quarter of the regular-season finale.
“I was watching,” James says, “from a spot near the other end zone. I didn’t get a great look at Jai’s catch. What I clearly saw was all the players celebrating after the TD.”
Jai Williams, who’s interested in majoring in architecture, plans to primarily prevent TDs at the next level. He was scheduled to report to the University of Kentucky for preseason camp on August 8, pandemic permitting. At a few hamburgers heavier than 200 pounds, Williams is light for a Division I outside linebacker.
But that shouldn’t worry Kentucky Wildcats football coach Mark Stoops and his staff, longtime LFHS football coach Chuck Spagnoli maintains.
“I told all of the college recruiters who stopped by the school that Jai’s best football is in front of him,” Spagnoli says. “He’ll be a bigger and better player in a couple of years, no question; you won’t recognize him.
“Jai,” the coach adds, “moves well for a player his size, and he worked as hard as he possibly could in his seasons with us. I have nothing but respect for him.”
Something special, from Spagnoli’s perspective, during the 2019 season: any interaction between Big Cat and the future Wildcat.
“Not many fathers and sons get the opportunities to experience what they did,” Spagnoli says. “I’m glad I witnessed the moments; they were heartfelt. You could tell family is important to both of them.”

KETAMINE: A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE FOR MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
words by Dr. Bal Nandra
REPORTS SHOW THAT the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing on increased feelings of anxiety, isolation, depression, stress, and uncertainty unlike any other times experienced in the past. Even in the absence of underlying or previous mental illness, the challenges we as a nation and society face today can cause generalized anxiety and depression.
For those with a history of depression or anxiety, symptoms may worsen and as Chief Medical Officer at IV Solution and Ketamine Centers, I have seen a large increase in the need for our services since quarantine began. We are seeing that the population as a whole is experiencing pressures that will undoubtedly tax our mental health for the unforeseeable future, and we are here to help those suffering manage.
Per the American Society of Ketamine Physicians (ASKP), ketamine therapy has been declared an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you struggle from major depression, anxiety, or PTSD and haven’t found antidepressants and other medications to be effective, or if the stress throughout this pandemic has worsened your depression, ketamine can get you relief in just a few days. FDA data supports ketamine infusion therapy treatment for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and migraines.
Our full medical team, comprised of anesthesiologists and registered nurses, creates customized plans for patients by collaborating with their primary care physician, specialist, or mental health professional to optimize treatment and ensure continuity of care. Everything is tailored to what each patient requires during this time and beyond.
Ketamine is effective within hours to days with minimal side effects. Most of our patients have improvement after their first or second ketamine infusion and feel very relaxed while they are receiving the treatment. Many patients, with the guidance of their psychiatrist or physician, may be able to decrease or even eliminate their other medications after the treatments.
After the series of six 45-minute infusions for depression done over a period of two to three weeks, patients typically report relief of symptoms for many weeks and sometimes months, after which time booster infusions may be scheduled as needed. Patients can inquire directly for the treatment or can be referred by their physician or mental health professional.
During these times of increased stress, anxiety, isolation and uncertainty, we are committed to providing services to everyone that needs them, and we take full disinfection and PPP precautions per CDC recommendations, minimizing person-to-person contact and
wait times in our medical facility. Patients are also screened carefully before appointments.
In addition to ketamine treatments, we emphasize doing one’s best to maintain a routine that will support mental, physical, emotional, and social health:
• First and foremost, continue to follow the recommendations set forth by your psychiatrist or mental health provider.
• Continue taking your medications, and if your symptoms are worsened by the pandemic contact your doctor for an evaluation and/or adjustment.
• See your therapist through teleconferencing if possible.
• Try to exercise regularly at least 30 minutes a day, three or more times a week.
• Take advantage of the surge in online and live streaming exercise sessions.
• Use Facetime or Zoom to video chat with your best friend or even with a large group.
• Try to keep only positive influences around you and do not let the negative energy of others bring you down.
We understand nothing about these times is normal and many people are suffering. If ketamine is a potential option for you, please contact us and we will evaluate and coordinate your care with a free phone consultation. Please be safe, stay healthy, and know we will get through this together.
IV Solutions and Ketamine Centers is located at 300 Village Green Road, Suite 225 in Lincolnshire and at 712 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. A LEGACY OF CHANGE
The Allendale Association impacts the lives it touches for generations to come.

WHEN PETER ROTH’S grandfather, Herman Charles Roth, was 10 years old, his father and stepmother put him on a train from Wisconsin with a note pinned to his coat that read “Allendale.” When he arrived at the nearest train stop, the conductor pointed the little boy in the direction of Allendale Farm.
In those years, Allendale Farm was an orphanage for boys that was opened in 1897. Founder Edward “Cap” Bradley purchased a plot of land in Illinois near Cedar Lake from a farmer named Allen, ultimately creating a haven for urban homeless boys. The orphanage had a self-sustaining farm with fruits, vegetables, and livestock, which the boys tended.
It wasn’t long after Herman arrived at Allendale that Bradley put his arm around him and said, “Welcome home.”
Allendale was Herman’s home until he graduated from high school. He was so grateful to the home Allendale provided him that he stayed in touch with founder Bradley for many years. His grandson discovered a series of letters between Herman and Bradley after Herman passed away.
“My grandfather was an amazing man who lived to the ripe old age of 99,” says Peter. “He was the kindest, gentlest, God-fearing man who put others above himself. Cap Bradley meant so much to my grandfather that he gave my father the middle name Bradley, who gave me the middle name Bradley, and my wife and I carried on this tradition with our first born son, too.”
During the 1920s, the orphanage Allendale Farm became the Allendale School for Boys (girls didn’t attend until 1987) and evolved
in the early 1960s into a treatment facility. Today, the Allendale Association is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to excellence and innovation in the care, treatment, education, and advocacy for families, children, and youth with serious emotional, mental, and behavioral health challenges. Through a variety of programs, they serve nearly 800 children from Lake, Cook, McHenry, and Kenosha Counties as well as the central and southern regions of Illinois.
“When families find their way to Allendale, they’re in need of the specialized treatment we can provide,” explains Jason Keeler, Allendale Association’s Executive Director. “Our responsibility is to provide stability and hope by leveraging our continuum of services and bringing families back together as quickly as we can.”
Allendale’s charge has become particularly stressful in this time of Covid-19, as much of their day programing has been largely shut down. However, their residential living facility has remained open and working with modifications in place to ensure the safety and health of all involved.
“Sheltering in place, we are fortunate and very grateful for the space and surroundings we have,” explains Keeler, noting the organization has fully taken advantage of its more than one hundred acres of outdoor space during this time. “Our grounds are truly spectacular and are one of the most appealing aspects of Allendale. It’s a beautiful environment in which to retreat and to heal.”
The Allendale Shelter Club is one of the primary fundraising bodies for the Allendale Association. Founded in 1906 by 16 women, the Shelter Club has grown to more than 60 women, contributing more than $13 million over the years.
“In addition to raising money, I really see our job as providing the

“I’ve never been more proud to be part of such an incredibly dynamic and hard-working group of women.”
‘mother’s touch’ that is missing for many of these kids,” says Laura Torosian, the Allendale Shelter Club’s current board president. “In the past when we’ve been able to host our parties for the kids, I’m always so humbled by the stories that got these children (many ages 4-18) here. I was working at an arts and crafts table one year, when two older boys came over and sat down with me. They told me that if it wasn’t for Allendale, they would be dead or in jail. For them, it was a gift to know where they were waking up tomorrow morning. Allendale is allowing these kids to see a whole different side of the world—it’s giving them hope and showing them that there are people cheering them on, who want them to succeed.”
Torosian cannot say enough about her dynamic board who, even in this time of canceled fundraisers and virtual meetings, is thinking outside of the box on ways they can support Allendale.
“If there was a year to flee a board, 2020 would be the year to do it,” says Torosian. “But almost on a daily basis, I have women calling me with new ideas of how we could be helping Allendale more. Last year, our main fundraiser’s theme was a ‘Night of Surprises.’ Our board has literally applied this theme to the entire year. I’ve never been more proud to be part of such an incredibly dynamic and hard-working group of women.”
Keeler is quick to acknowledge the importance of the Shelter Club to Allendale. “It’s not lost on me for a minute that we couldn’t exist without the work the Shelter Club does for us,” he says. “Their fundraising efforts, their support for more than a century—I don’t think we’d be around without them.”
In addition to much-needed funding, Keeler says there is one more way the community could help Allendale and its mission.
“The biggest challenge we have is finding foster families for many of the youth in our care who are not able to return to their biological families,” he says. “It’s a key component to helping children transition back into the world—being able to match them with the right families. It’s a big ask and I realize this, but if you feel called to play such a role, we have the supports in place to help you do this.”
The impact of Allendale has proven to have a reach far beyond the students that pass through its programs.
“In the letters my grandfather left behind, he described his time at Allendale as ‘heaven on earth,’” recalls Peter. “I will be forever grateful to Allendale for the heritage they gave to my grandfather that made him the man that he was. His children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren all have been given a legacy through him because of Allendale and Cap Bradley. Being able to visit Allendale, the site where he grew up, meant so much to me and my family. My sister and I still speak about it and talk about returning again.”

Lake Forest Open Lands Association proudly connects our community with nature.

New signage on a Lake Forest Open Lands trail
This waterside bench on a LFOLA nature preserve offers a spot to rest and reflect.
IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS, the world has profoundly changed before our eyes. The way we do the most basic things has been turned inside out. Home is the office, school is online. Up is down, out is in.
In fact, now more than ever, out–as in outside–is in. This year communities have rediscovered the importance of nature for our wellbeing. People have responded to this unintended catalyst for cultural change and come together outside.
“We are really fortunate that our local connection to nature has always been strong–core to who we are as a community.” says John Sentell, Lake Forest Open Lands Association President. “What hasn’t changed is our ability to connect the community with nature,” Sentell shared, referring to Lake Forest Open Lands’ multi-tiered offerings that include hundreds of acres of public nature preserves laced with trails ready for exercise and adventure, kids’ programs, intern and volunteer opportunities, adult education, and social events. He adds, “We need nature as much as nature needs us.”
This year, “Bagpipes & Bonfire,” a fall fixture on the local calendar and a Lake Forest tradition for over 30 years, has been reimagined in a way that will be safe for the world we live in now.
“We want to serve up the best of Bagpipes in today’s world,” Fred Wacker, Lake Forest Open Lands Association Chair says. “To do that, we’re getting creative and putting together an event that safely allows everyone to experience and take the annual spirit of Bagpipes home this year. We’re really excited about it.”
On Saturday, September 19, the evening festivities will offer catered family dinners, Scottish beverage options, and
a corps of pipers who will play at various locations around the community. “Beneath all the changes this year, the spirit still burns bright. The pipers will still play and the tradition will continue. This reimagined event will set up an amazing and refreshed celebration in 2021, just watch.” Wacker continues. Northern Trust is the presenting sponsor this year.
For over 50 years LFOLA has proudly been our area’s conservation land trust, restoring, preserving, and making nature available to everyone. Today, the organization finds itself ideally positioned to welcome the world into the healthy outdoors during the coronavirus lockdown. The world has been thinking outside, reconsidering priorities and aspirations, and LFOLA has been there.
“All of us are living through this unprecedented change,” Sentell comments. “Through our work and conservation mission, LFOLA is ready for it. We take great pride in the fact that more people are discovering and appreciating what’s right here. It’s tough to

drive to a National Park or get on a plane these days. Nature is what you make of it. Ours is only five minutes from your back door.”
Beginning in March, visits to nature preserves have been on the rise, as people pursue options that take them outside when beaches, gyms, and other activities shut down throughout our area. With new directional trail signs and wayfinding kiosks in place to clearly guide and physically distance its visitors, Lake Forest Open Lands is thoughtful in ensuring that its preserves remain accessible so members of the community can get outside safely.
What is happening locally is consistent with national measures that have suddenly bucked a prevailing long-term trend. Based on data reported by Scientific American magazine, national park visits, sales of fishing licenses, campground permits and other empirical data points indicate that the public’s appetite for outdoor recreation peaked over 30 years ago and has been dropping ever since. The COVID-19 restrictions abruptly reversed that, creating a reconnection with the outdoors.
“Each day, we welcome individuals, families, children, dogs, seniors, runners, birdwatchers, frog fans, anyone who can find their way to one of our six preserves,” Sentell says. “We’re open for people who appreciate nature and those who want to learn more. With the ongoing support of this community, Lake Forest Open Lands will always be here. We like to say that nature is not only good for your heart, it’s good for your soul.”
Please visit lfola.org to learn more about 2020’s Bagpipes & Bonfire and LFOLA, and to learn how you can help keep nature open for all.
REFLECTIONS FROM THE CHAIR
“Our organization’s commitment to broadening people’s awareness of the benefits of nature to our community is a most worthy undertaking. LFOLA is our local treasure, our open space, our place to move from the 4-inch screen to a natural expanse of hundreds of acres right outside our back doors. We truly appreciate all the ways that friends of LFOLA support our mission. Without our members, volunteers, and supporters, we could not do what we do or what yet needs to be done. In the case of LFOLA, we are always open for you. It remains a constant for all of us—an organization that stewards places where we can take in the unique sights, smells, and sounds that only come with fresh air and a walk in the woods.”

76 FOREST & BLUFF Dr. Eugene Hotchkiss
The Great Communicator
The History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff honors
Dr. Eugene Hotchkiss with its coveted Local Legend award.
words by Tricia Despres photography by April Graves
IT WAS 1953, and Eugene Hotchkiss found himself at a crossroads. After graduating from Dartmouth College and serving as an intelligence officer with the Navy, the Highland Park native still didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life.
But then, a telegram arrived.
“It was from the dean at Dartmouth, asking me if I would want to be an assistant to the dean,” Hotchkiss recalls. “That telegram has made all of the difference in my life.”
The 92-year-old with a gentle smile then stops for a moment, as a flood of memories fill his mind.
“I like to think that almost all of us have something that shows up and affects our entire future,” says Dr. Hotchkiss, who would go on to receive his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1960. “It was that telegram that changed everything for me. It led me to a life in higher education administration.”
His remarkable contributions to higher education administration are what spurred the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff to name Hotchkiss as its 2020 Local Legend. Hosted by WGN Morning News anchor Larry Potash, this year’s event will serve as the 11th in which the organization has honored a Local Legend who has contributed significantly to the community and the world.
“This honor is certainly fitting for a man that is so loved by the community,” explains History Center Vice President Katie Hale of Dr. Hotchkiss, who served as President of Lake Forest College from 1970 to 1993. “Gene is truly the great communicator. He is a natural leader and we chose to honor him for the significant contributions he made not only to Lake Forest College, but to the community as a whole.”
Joining a long list of notable Local Legend honorees such as astronaut Captain Jim Lovell, Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Member Ryne Sandberg, and award-winning journalist Bill Kurtis, Dr. Hotchkiss says he could not believe he would now be able to add Local Legend to his already impressive resume.
“Well, I’m humbled and speechless,” Dr. Hotchkiss tells Forest & Bluff from his current residence at Lake Forest Place. “I guess I have to admit that I do have an ego though. So yes, I’m flattered.”
It is this quick wit that continues to delight all those who know and love Dr. Hotchkiss, a gentle man whose impressive resume and unbridled knowledge of life inside and outside of the classroom certainly are a treasure during these increasingly troubled times.
“I’m very glad I’m not in (Lake Forest College President) Steve (Schutt’s) position right now,” admits Dr. Hotchkiss, as the pandemic continues to loom just outside his window. “He is doing a great job and I have great respect for him, but I don’t envy him right now. The decisions he’s having to make every day … well, these are some compelling decisions.”
Of course, Dr. Hotchkiss also saw his share of challenges through
FOREST & BLUFF 77
Hotchkiss in front of a recent History Center exhibit
his long and illustrious career. But he never let them slow him down.
“Challenges are what makes life interesting,” Hotchkiss chuckles. “I was never afraid of a challenge.”
Indeed, when Hotchkiss took the reins as President at Lake Forest College in 1970, the institution was experiencing its share of troubles.
“(Dr. Hotchkiss) led Lake Forest College out of near financial ruin in the ’70s and became the bridge between the administration and the teachers and the students,” explains Hale of Hotchkiss, who remains the longest serving President at Lake Forest College. “He concurrently raised the academic standard while also raising the overall culture of the campus.”
“Lake Forest College was not in terribly good shape when I arrived,” adds Dr. Hotchkiss quietly. “I think that I brought it back to life. The faculty was strong and the program was good, but basically, they had run out of money.”
He then lets out a deep breath.
“But, you know, things were easier in those days,” he says with a smile. “Most of the time, it was great fun.”
And it is the sweet times that Hotchkiss chooses to hold onto these days. He sits and he thinks about the good times, the times he spent riding around the campus in a three-speed Raleigh bicycle, the times spent creating Lake Forest-based CROYA (Committee Representing Our Young Adults), and certainly the times he spent alongside his late wife Suzanne.
“Sue was a real companion for me and at the college as a whole,” Dr. Hotchkiss remembers. “She truly brought the college into the community. I remember the dinner parties we would have literally for strangers. My wife would ask ‘who’s coming tonight?’ and I would look at the list and sometimes, it was people we didn’t know. We would be there entertaining 20 to 25 people in the separate dining room in the basement, and Sue would always be there with a smile on her face.”
Suzanne Hotchkiss passed away in 2013 at the age of 84.
“I’ve been lucky to accomplish much in my life, but my greatest accomplishment was to have her as my wife,” he says, and then he laughs. “I’d be in trouble if I didn’t say that.”
Dr. Hotchkiss’ personal and professional accomplishments will officially be recognized at this year’s Local Legends event, which will take place virtually this year on September 24 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 per household. In lieu of congratulating Dr. Hotchkiss in person, sponsorships and opportunities to send a video greeting or a personal note to include in a keepsake book are available.
“Even at his age, he continues to be involved,” Hale remarks. “When Gene speaks, the room gets quiet. He just has a unique perspective on things and is well versed in so much. Plus, he is such a bright and engaging man.”
Indeed, Hotchkiss remains a voice of reason—a calming voice, a real voice for some unreal times. It makes one wonder what Hotchkiss would like his legacy to look like.
“Just hearing the word ‘legacy’ mentioned along with my name reminds me that, my God, I’m getting old,” says Dr. Hotchkiss, who still has an office at Lake Forest College at his disposal and continues to write various biographies and memoirs. “Talking about my legacy scares me. So does the word legend.”
He laughs, and then he grows serious.
“Truth be known, I walk through the campus and I know a few people…but not many,” he says with a tinge of sadness. “I hope that in the future, those who come across my name will say that he made a difference in Lake Forest.”

KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOR
words by Mitch Hurst / photography by Robin Subar
Chris Webb likes to say Webb Financial Group builds moats. Insurance policies are about protecting assets, and his insurance company operates with that principle in mind. The company’s logo includes an image of a knight in shining armor.
“We’re your partners in protection,” Webb says. “Whether it’s your income, your home, or your car, we protect it.”
Based in Lake Forest, Webb Financial Group is a full-service insurance broker, a one-stop shop for all of the insurance needs of individuals, families, and businesses. While consumers have many options for purchasing insurance policies, especially online, Webb is interested in building relationships with his individual and business clients.
“We enjoy working with people who value relationships. Some people want to buy insurance online. They want to be anonymous,” says Webb. “We like working with people who want someone to call and text on the weekend when their kid takes a wrong turn and floods the car after a rainstorm. Clients want someone who’s going to be responsive and get back in touch with them so they can be heard.”
Another advantage to working directly with an insurance broker such as Webb Financial Group is being able to understand your policy options and to get sound advice on which policies are for you.
“Insurance is a black hole for a lot of people. They just really don’t take the time to understand what they have versus what they should have,” Webb says. “They certainly don’t read the fine print in most of the policies so they don’t know. We are an independent company and don’t represent one insurance agency like what are called ‘captive agents.’ “
Working with many different insurance companies that offer a wide array of benefits gives Webb the ability to offer a broad variety array of insurance options to clients. Among his hundreds of clients are small to medium-sized businesses that have unique needs.
“We work on behalf of the policy holder, not the insurance company, and can go to the best company that fits the client based on what they’re trying to accomplish,” he says. “Whether it’s to save money or get the best coverage money can buy or somewhere in between.”
Webb cites the flooding on the North Shore as an example of specialized coverage that clients can obtain.
“A lot of people in our area on the North Shore have very nice basements where they’ve spent upwards of $100,000 but you can get water down there,” he says. “In the last year we’ve seen nearly $1 million in water-related claims, so it’s a significant factor.”
Webb’s advice, especially for homeowners, is to purchase policies with the highest level of deductible they can afford and to file claims only for significant damages.
“When you file two or three small claims it’s just a matter of time before you have a big one and eventually the insurance company will cancel your policy,” Webb says.
What is most important, Webb says, is that clients understand what their needs are and find solutions that match those needs.
“You just have to be smart about it and that’s why we help our clients make educated choices,” he says. “They take our advice and understand what the risks are.”

Ido it but I hate it. What if you could achieve the results while lying down? Interested?
We are excited to introduce CoolTone to our practice. This technology will bring a new dimension to help patients achieve their body contouring goals of improving muscle strength and tone.
CoolTone is the latest device to be introduced by Coolsculpting, the leader in non-invasive fat reduction. CoolTone’s magnetic muscle stimulation or MMS technology penetrates into the muscle layers and induces involuntary muscle contractions. The body’s response to these contractions is to strengthen its muscle fibers resulting in improved muscle conditioning. After treatments, the abdomen will be firmer and have a more defined and tone appearance. Buttocks will have a more toned appearance and will be firmer.
CoolTone has 50 percent more magnetic intensity than the leading competitor. With the backing of Allergan I expect it to become the gold standard.
Typical protocols are four sessions over a two-week period. Results are immediate. There is no downtime. CoolTone can be combined with Coolsculpting or after liposuction to achieve that athletic toned appearance. CoolTone can also be a standalone procedure in that individual who is already in good shape but wants more definition.
Typical treatments only take a half-hour. CoolTone combined with CoolSculpting is an excellent combination to get rid of your COVID extra pounds. As part of our introduction of this exciting technology we are offering it at a substantial discount.

ENDURING ELEGANCE
THE VERY BEST BASIC to invest in this fall is a timeless, go-with-everything overcoat. This classic double face cashmere coat by luxury American sportswear designer Adam Lippes ticks all the sleek, chic boxes. Crafted from sumptuous zibelline cashmere with patch pockets, a slender collar, and room to layer, Lippes’ elegant yet unfussy staple is the perfect transitional piece, carrying you to and through winter. Shifting seamlessly from a casual denim with cashmere turtleneck pairing to a polished pussy-bow blouse and trousers ensemble, it becomes the coat you reach for over and over again.
The lilac hue lends a feminine touch to this streamlined, menswear inspired piece, but it comes in camel, black, grey, and emerald for the more traditionally inclined. It is also available in two lengths—the car coat (seen above), and a perfectly proportioned full-length version.
Adam Lippes zibelline cashmere coat, available through neapolitan collection, Winnetka, 847-441-7784 or adamlippes.com.
