Keeping the focus on single-sex education

ack a r ou nd t he N i xon Administration, the idea of coeducation (including uniting male and female bathrooms) was championed, while schools promoting single-sex education began to falter. Around here, Lake Forest Academy and Ferry Hall merged to become a co-ed private prep school. But two private schools on the North Shore — Regina Dominican and Woodlands Academy — have resisted the urge to allow teenage boys to matriculate to this day. I have what may be a unique insight to single-sex education. As a teenager, I attended the then-all-male Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. I also attended the all-female Emma Willard in Troy, N.Y. (now I know you want to read on, but if you’re hoping for some Oprah-worthy transgender story, stop here). Deerfield offered a three-month exchange program with Emma Willard, and the idea of being one of 15 or so boys among 300 girls was pretty appealing after a few years on a male-only campus. What I’ve learned since is that I learned a lot at Deerfield — more than at college. Being able to focus on work without distractions, as they say, is a blessing at that age. When Deerfield

exchange students weren’t disturbing them, the women at Emma Willard agreed. Single-sex education works, and reporter Angelika Labno delves into the continued appeal of Woodlands and Regina Dominican in this week’s issue. Buying a house on Lake Michigan is a dream for many. The view of Lake Michigan from Janet Burt’s dream house in Lake Forest still stirs her. She and her husband Paul moved their family closer to the lake 13 months ago, after owning a house on Mayflower Road in Lake Forest the previous three years. “I’m looking at the lake right now,” Janet said in a recent phone interview. “The leaves on the trees are all gone and what I see is the entire lake, end to end. “It’s as beautiful of a view now as it is in the summer,” she added. “We’re lucky. It’s a vacation at home every day.” Jean Wright of Winnetka also lives on the lake, in which she and her late husband would often swim before dinners in the summertime. “You’re not just buying a house when you buy on the lake; you’re also buying a way of life,” said Wright, owner of Jean Wright Real Estate in Winnetka. “You’re a part of a resort-type setting year-round.” A lake house along the North Shore — from Lake Bluff down to Evanston — is the ultimate in luxury for many homeowners. But residents looking to end up in that type of house should first answer simple questions before wondering just how turquois Lake Michigan’s water appears from a kitchen window. Prospective

homeowners also need to be cognizant of special issues related to lakefront structures and property. “Buyers should determine what is important to them,” said Ann Lyon, a broker associate at Coldwell Banker in Lake Forest. She is the listing agent for the 25,000-square-foot Schweppe estate ($12 million) in Lake Forest, located on 450 N. Mayflower Rd, whose property runs all the way to Lake Michigan. “How much privacy do they want within their home and on the beach? How much lake frontage do they want? Do they want access to and use of the beach or just views of the lake?” Another crucial consideration is the condition of a property’s bluff, especially if it’s close to the house. Coastal consulting firms such as Shabica and Associates help buyers determine if the bluff is stable or not and what options are available, Lyon noted. “(Consulting firms) can also help you determine if a pier can be built and what size boat can be moored to the pier, with water depth taken in consideration,” she added. A maxim from real estate agents who specialize in waterfront sales is: Consider the property more than the structure. “You can change the house, but you can’t change the location, so buy a property that you really love,” Shannon Petrie wrote in

An assumption many homeowners make after purchasing a house on a lake is that they have the right to do whatever they want with the property’s trees. But that’s not always permissible. “Just because you own the land doesn’t mean you get to cut down as many trees as

you want to clear the way for a better view of the lake,” said @properties co-founder Thad Wong. “(Villages) have various ordinances regarding tree removal, and finding out that kind of information is important. “But the most important thing to consider when looking for a property on a lake,” he added, “is the amount of the property’s frontage. The questions you need to ask are, ‘How deep is the parcel?’ and ‘Is it possible to build on the tableland?’ Many times people like to tear down and build on land, but some parts of land aren’t deemed buildable.”

“You’re not just buying a house when you buy on the lake; you’re also buying a way of life,” says Jean Wright, owner of Jean Wright Real Estate in Winnetka.

from the lake does wonders for the heart and mind. “Buyers today are looking for the peace and serenity of Lake Michigan to calm the stresses of life,” he said. “(Another benefit) is the sheer joy of watching their children play on the beach.” A real estate attorney is a valuable resource for prospective homeowners. Before any real estate contract is signed, a homebuyer should make sure the contract contains three provisions: an attorney approval/modification contingency, a professional inspection contingency and a financing contingency clause. “The attorney approval contingency is the most important of the three, especially since it is the realtors who initially negotiate and fill in the contract forms,” said James Kottaras, a real estate attorney based in Chicago. “This provision gives the buyer’s attorney the power to request modifications to the contract or, in the event the parties are unable to reach an accord, to cancel the contract. “Most contract forms by real estate brokers already contain the provisions,” he added, “but it is a good idea to confirm that your broker does indeed use the standard realtor association forms.” Kottaras also advises clients to check flood maps and see if a property they’re interested in is in a flood zone.

“If it is in a flood zone,” he said, “check to see what the insurance costs will be. This may make the difference between buying and not buying.” Options exist for some lakefront homeowners who want to qualify for tax incentives, including the Illinois Historic Preservation Tax Program and the Property Tax Assessment Freeze for Historic Residences. Before moving closer to Lake Michigan in Lake Forest in January, 2012, the Burts made sure the 104-year-old dwelling was structurally sound, got the bluff inspected and asked for the plumber’s and landscaper’s contact information from the previous owner. “It has been beautifully maintained,” Janet Burt said. “Again, we were lucky.” Wong of @properties doesn’t buy and sell waterfront houses. But he indirectly helps buyers and sellers, and he’s wellversed in the differences between bluffs in Illinois and those that slope in Indiana and Michigan. “If you have the opportunity and the means to live on the lake, you’ll never be disappointed,” he said. “Property taxes are higher and there are other issues to consider like maintenance. But there’s nothing like the view of the lake. “The view of the lake,” he added, “is priceless.” ■

Two Catholic private high schools on the North Shore boast not only a 100 percent graduation rate for its students — but a 100 percent college acceptance. The two spots, Regina Dominican in Wilmette and Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, are all-girls schools. Whether single-sex education holds an advantage over co-education for teenagers is oft debated, and the American Civil Liberties Union’s fight against single-sex classrooms at public schools gained much press last year. Proponents of separating the sexes argue that males and females are wired differently, therefore requiring different teaching methods to maximize

learning potential. Plus, it is easier to learn when the opposite sex is not a distraction. Opponents view the separation as discriminatory and believes it reinforces sex stereotypes. Gerald Grossman, headmaster of Woodlands Academy who also teaches English, says it is not so much a matter of single-sex education but an environment that allows students to thrive. According to Grossman, Woodlands’ teaching relies upon tradition as well as science and brain research. One study discovered that girls are most successful when they sense a rapport with the teacher. Grossman says he even pays attention to his range of voice. A girl’s body reacts to a loud, booming voice differently than a boy’s.

However, what is most important goes beyond strategies of teaching — it is about creating an environment that makes students feel at home. “Our curriculum may be very similar, but how we go about it is very different,” said Grossman, in comparing Woodlands

‘The kids abroad need a friend & mentor’

Writing a pen pal letter seems to be an obligatory English activity in elementary school: a day is spent drafting and editing, the letters are sent, months pass without a reply, and soon the whole ordeal is largely forgotten. But for Daniella Cohen, a freshman at Highland Park High School, it was a rite of passage to becoming a global citizen. “I wanted to find out a little about these kids in war-torn areas, and it evolved into something I never really expected,” said Cohen. In third grade, Cohen’s class went through the scenario above; no responses from kids in Israel and Iraq. Her fifth-grade class tried again with Sahasra Deepika Institute of Education (SDIE) in Bangalore, India, and was met with success. Cohen paired up with Partha Rajendra, grandson of the founder Sahasra Deepika Institute of Education, and the two founded G.I.V.E. (Go, Innovate, Volunteer and Educate), a pen pal program that promotes friendship and education. “A lot of kids here need empathy and cultural understanding, and the kids abroad need a friend and mentor,” said Cohen. She attributes her lesson of empathy to her pen pal, Suma, with whom she still keeps in touch with four years later. Since its inception, G.I.V.E. has sent more than 500 letters from The Boys and Girls Club and schools in Virginia, Wisconsin, Illinois and Washington, D.C. to schools in India, Uganda and soon Rwanda. In addition to letters, the program sends flip-flops inscribed with messages of hope. This year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Cohen’s community, including the mayor, got together to sign over more than flip-flops. G.I.V.E. doesn’t stop there. Realizing that more could be done, Cohen and Rajendra are focusing on the second part of their mission: education. As Cohen explains, the kids in Bangalore focus on math and science, as that is the key to getting out of poverty, but are devoid of poetry and art.

The program hopes to incorporate that by donating books, and more ambitiously, the Internet. Knowledge Server is the latest extension of G.I.V.E. It already has some funding, a few chrome books and Apple laptops, and the two hope to implement the first Knowledge Server in Bangalore this summer. “Not only do they not have Internet or Wi-Fi, but they don’t have access to knowledge that we can so easily find if we want to,” said Cohen, referencing what students take for granted, like being a click away from the boundless information on Wikipedia. The trip to India is not a first for Cohen. Last March, she spent two weeks there, spending a week at the school in Bangalore. She finally met Suma face-to-face, and got to see the fruits of her labor. The trip was documented on G.I.V.E.’s website, www. gogiveproject.com. “I definitely learned the value of a dollar,” she said of her experience. “I took bucket showers. More importantly, I learned what it means to be a true friend.” Cohen’s efforts have been recognized and honored in several ways. Some of her most memorable achievements include being a finalist for the 2012 Gloria Barron Prize, which honors young heroes, and appearing on NBC Channel 5 on in December. Her involvement in Ashoka Youth Venture captured the attention of schools nationwide, and she hopes her venture spreads to more and more schools here and abroad. “She tries so many different people and uses so many different connections, and she is always persistent,” said Kevin Lakani, Cohen’s English teacher. His sophomore unit on Rwanda was what lead to expanding the program into Rwanda. Once a school is connected, Lakani plans to involve his sophomore class in a letter exchange. His mission matches Cohen’s, which is to promote understanding and erase negative preconceptions about war-torn areas. “Daniella’s a student that’s kind and caring,” said Lakani. “She’s focused on the world outside her own.” ■

Sherri Mariani is a certified yoga instructor and masseuse living in Lake Forest. Reading: I am reading “The Greater Journey” by David McCullough. It is bringing me way back to my brief days as an art history major and really making the time period of the mid-to-late 1800s come alive. I just finished “Karmic Management” by Geshe Michael Roach. This book is part of a reading list required for the “Yoga for Survivors” workshop I recently took. Listening: I have become very unadventurous in my listening by not changing the CDs in my car very often. I do find the Shazam App to be most helpful in checking out new songs on the radio (or old songs in a bar). Watching: “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Magic City” (love to see Carla (Kilburg) Bianchi on screen), “The Good Wife”, “Big Bang Theory” and new guilty pleasure “Scandal” are some of what take up my time lately. I am waiting for “True Blood” to return and friends tell me I should watch “Homeland”, but haven’t gotten there yet. I seem to have a great aversion to angry news talk shows. Following: Whenever I get myself to Yoga Circle and take a class with Gabriel Halpern, I know I need to be there more. His wisdom, irreverence, and mastery exemplify what yoga can be. I teach a continuing class at my home and co-teach a class at the Cancer Wellness Center in Northbrook. It is a wonderful place that offers incredible free classes, services and resources to anyone touched by cancer. Yoga: I am continually observing the pattern of my personal yoga practice. I am inspired by the classes I take at Forever Om, Healing Power Yoga, and Moksha Yoga. I hope to bring that to the classes I teach. I will be starting a class soon for

people impacted by cancer or other health issues and also another gentle/restorative class. I recently became a “Stop and Breathe” relaxation coach (Stopandbreathe. org) and will be using that in hospitals and with people undergoing stressful situations. Eating: I do not do much cooking because my husband Frank likes to cook and has pretty much taken that over. No complaints! Favorite Mistake: About 32 years ago, we were getting ready to go on vacation.

This pretty much ended the argument about me being late, but I realize I probably used up my one pass on this. ■

Indestructible bond Girls reunite as women on Oprah after book from Lake Bluff author prompts search ■ by

Two girls board the Deutschland in 1938, a ship set for America to escape the horrors of Nazi Germany. Completely alone, the two form an indestructible bond. Upon arrival they are separated — Edith Westerfeld to Chicago, Gerda Katz to Seattle. They have no address, no phone number to stay in touch. As the years pass by, only glimpses of memories pop into each other’s thoughts. Fast-forward seven decades. A middle school classroom in Naperville reads their story and makes it a mission to unite the long-lost best friends. With Oprah’s camera crew in tow to capture the incredible reunion, the women finally meet face to face after 73 years apart. This is the tale of friendship, healing, and a slice of history immortalized. “People like my mother cope by cutting off their past,” said Fern Chapman of Lake Bluff, who has written about her mother Edith’s experiences in her books, “Motherland” and “Is it Night or Day?” “This has been an experience of coming to know who she is.” The journey began 21 years ago when Chapman was pregnant. Her mother — now Edith Schumer, who was always closed off about her history — decided to take a

trip to her small hometown of Stockstadt, Germany. The mother-daughter experience was the foundation for Chapman’s first book, “Motherland.” It was not until after she wrote the book that Chapman learned her mother was actually a part of a largely unknown Holocaust rescue mission, One Thousand Children, that placed unaccompanied Jewish children in various foster homes and facilities across America. Schumer’s parents knew that the horrors unfolding in Germany were only going to get worse, so they arranged for Schumer and her sister, though not together, to escape to America. Her parents perished a few years later. “The Holocaust directly hit one generation and was transmitted to the next,” said Chapman. “I certainly felt my mother’s anxiety and loss. I think that’s why I write.” After this discovery, Chapman wrote her second book, “Is It Night or Day?” The historical fiction tells her mother’s story of childhood immigration, including the close friendship with Gerda. It is often read in middle-school curriculums, as kids can relate to the 12-year-old character. The students at Madison Junior High in Naperville were especially moved by the torn friendship and decided to take it upon themselves to unite the women.

“My mother had said, ‘I hope [this book] is like an open letter to Gerda Katz,’” said Chapman. Little did she know that her wish would come true. The students utilized social media and databases until they finally tracked down Gerda Katz Frumkin. Along the way, the story gained enough coverage in the press to interest Oprah Winfrey. Her crew filmed the official meeting of the two women in Seattle in July, 2011. The two women paid a visit Madison Junior High to express their thanks this past August. The reunion aired as part of the first episode of Oprah’s new show, “Lost and Found,” at the beginning of this year. “I always hoped that we would be reunited,” said Schumer, who lives in Skokie. “It was very, very emotional. We are so glad [the students] did this. It really is an amazing story that they found Gerda.” “This was a very sad story that I never imagined would end in triumph,” said Chapman. “Seeing my mother and Gerda together and seeing the students engulf them in love is probably the most memorable experience in the 21 years.” The reunion inspired Chapman to continue the story through a third book, “Like Finding My Twin.” “When we were flying back from Seattle, I asked why it was so important to find Gerda, and my mother said, ‘Oh, it’s like finding my twin!’ They suffered the same historical loss, and as a result, they bonded deeply.” The students’ efforts also inspired Chapman to create a new program, The Tapestry Project (more information can be found at www.fernschumerchapman. com). It encourages students to make history “come alive.” The educational model calls for students to undertake significant

projects, comparable to Edith and Gerda’s reunion, in an effort to redress a historical wrong. “When I wrote ‘Motherland’ I thought that piece of my life was over, but then something else happened and something else happened,” said Chapman on the mystery of where life might take you. “I feel honored to be able to call attention to an issue I think is important, because sadly, the impulse remains.” ■

When Brian Sedlak, a lawyer from Northbrook, first met Don, a Chicago public school student, Don was an undisciplined adolescent. “He was almost wild,” Sedlak recalled. “He seemed to approach everything in life in this manner.” The pair connected years ago through METROsquash, a Chicago-based program that uses squash, academics, cultural enrichment, mentoring and community service to help CPS grade school and high school students realize their full academic, athletic and personal potential.

METROsquash’s partner is the University of Chicago, which allows the use of its squash courts. A number of North Shore residents help the non-profit organization in a number of ways. Sedlak is a METROsquash board member and volunteers his time to make a difference in the lives of at-risk kids. Don no longer flies off the handle, and he has a firm grip on his squash game. He now attends a highly selective high school in Chicago. “Don’s confidence grew as he stayed with METROsquash, and everyone in the program could see that,” Sedlak said. “He is now a mature young adult and is very

disciplined. The program showed him that you must have a plan and be disciplined to achieve your goals.” Founded in 2005, METROsquash has helped place 49 students in their bestmatched high schools, including East Coast boarding schools such as Hotchkiss. METROsquash student-athletes have accessed more than $1 million in academic, squash and summer scholarships. “Many of the kids had never heard of squash when they came to us,” said Bill Hunter, a Lake Bluff resident who invests in small businesses and also serves as a METROsquash board member. “And some of the kids don’t always play squash after school; they arrive on campus just to get tutored. But what’s great about the program is the sport of squash — it’s a great conduit to other things.” Winnetka resident Wade Judge, another board member, deflates his squash opponents with a lethal backhand drop shot. The commercial real estate businessman is in his fifth year with METROsquash. “There are a lot of terrific causes out there,” Judge said. “The thing I like most about METROsquash is the number of different things the kids get to experience. We’re about academics, squash, educating the kids on nutrition and helping them develop socially. “What’s also great,” he added, “is the campus setting. The University of Chicago has been a phenomenal partner, and the kids we work with get the chance to be around college students, who double as role models.” METROsquash is close to breaking ground on its own multi-million-dollar facility, with donations from people who see the program as a path to a better life for kids. It will be located west of the University of Chicago campus. “I would be surprised if we don’t break ground in 2013,” Sedlak said.

Sedlak grew up in Chicago and attended Haugan Grammar and Taft High. He started playing squash in his late 30s and heard about METROsquash through a pro at the University Club of Chicago. “I felt a connection to the kids and the program,” said Sedlak. “The program is unique in that it uses squash — a sport primarily identified with affluence in the U.S. — as a hook to get at-risk students involved. Once in the doors, the real focus is on education and discipline. “Nothing,” he added, “is more inspiring to me than to see one of the kids attend a squash tournament at a college venue and do well.” Hunter has been hitting boasts (angle shots) in squash since he was 13. He first heard of METROsquash when his children, Brenton (now 18) and Kendall (16), played in a squash tournament several years ago at the U of C. METROsquash director David Kay — a former squash captain at Princeton University — eventually asked Hunter to serve as a board member. “The end game is getting kids interested in school, in studying and in learning the discipline it takes to do well in anything,” Hunter said. “Squash is only a part of it. Many of the kids and their parents aren’t aware of the scholarships out there available to them. We’re there to inform them of the scholarships and help them apply for them.” Having a lot of free time after school isn’t always a good thing for kids, Judge noted. METROsquash participants are busy kids who are interested in becoming transformed. “What keeps me enthused is seeing what the kids are becoming. When the kids in boarding schools come back during spring break, they’re not just great role models for the younger kids in the program; they’re also impressing the younger kids’ parents or guardians.” ■

Winnetka Children’s Hour has been providing live entertainment since 1932. The year culminates with an original musical written by members of the board and performed by their children. This year, the kids are presenting a medley of TV pop culture in “Remote Control.” A three-day set of performances of the hour-long musical kicked off Thursday at Winnetka’s Community House. Eighth-graders Katherine Gjertsen, Clare MacCarthy and Alice Kipp spoof three different Disney princesses in a high school setting: a vain Cinderella, cheating Rapunzel and bully Snow White. A science nerd fed up with their antics accidentally sends them to TV land, and the only way for them to come home is if they realize and fix their separate flaws. The girls journey through parodies of “Toddlers and Tiaras,” ESPN, “America’s Got Talent” and more, complete with commercial breaks. “This one is the most fun musical I’ve been in, and especially

because I get to do it with the other two girls who I’ve been with all these years,” said Gjertsen, who has been acting with Children’s Hour for eight years. This year, 34 kids ranging from age 7 to 14 will be performing alongside the veteran actresses. Children’s Hour is quite different from any other acting troupe for several reasons. There are no outside auditions; only children of the board members act in the musicals. The board is made up of about 22 families, and members need to be nominated to join. Schools involved this year include Greeley, Hubbard Woods, Crow Island, Sears, Skokie School and Carleton Washburne. The board employs a director, choreographer and music director for the musical each year, but the members volunteer to produce almost every aspect of the show. The hardworking parents are responsible for writing the script, building the scenery, costumes and publicity. “We write the show based on the kids we have each year, so

we can actually tailor the parts to the different kids we have based on how much stage time they want or rehearsal time they can commit to,” said board member Gwen Oelerich, who has been on the board for nine years. Coincidentally, Oelerich found out that her husband’s grandmother, Helen Oelerich was one of the founders of Winnetka Children’s Hour. The kids also have a large creative input on the script and songs, as this year’s show transpired during a sleepover with the three leading ladies. As Gjertsen explains, their ideas help make the script more current, as they know how kids would talk and what songs they would like. “I’m really sad because I’ve grown so close to all of the cast,” said Gjertsen. “You truly feel like a family.” Performances are on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. Tickets for the show are $8 and can be purchased either at the Community House the night of the event or in advance by e-mailing Oelerich at gwen@ koconsulting.com ■.

Sanford & sons ■ by david sweet Jenny Sanford has just finished lunch with South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley at the governor’s mansion in Columbia. Once the First Lady of the state, Sanford is quite familiar with the antebellum residence, having spent eight years there with her family. “There aren’t a lot of people who know what it’s like to live in the governor’s mansion,” says Sanford, a Winnetka native and 1980 graduate of Woodlands Academy in Lake Forest. “Ours is a female friendship. It’s not about politics.” That’s not to say politics is in her rear-view mirror, however. She was on a short list of South Carolina candidates to fill a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate last year. And only a few days before that January lunch, Sanford announced she would not run for an open Congressional seat in the Republican primary. Her opponent would have been her ex-husband, Mark Sanford, the former governor who famously (or infamously) went missing in 2009 before admitting he had traveled to Argentina to be with another woman. “I thought about it (running) briefly,” says Sanford, Jenny Sanford who ran her ex-husband’s th ree campaig ns for

Interviewed by the likes of Larry King and Barbara Walters about the book, in it Sanford talked frankly about her life with her husband, among other topics. “It was tough (writing it), but it was one of the most rewarding things I’ve done,” Sanford says. “It was very therapeutic. The press would say it’s revenge, but I wrote it to help other women. I still get e-mails from women who say how much it helped them.” One of five children — who all attended different high schools — Sanford is thankful she matriculated at Woodlands, a private all-girls Catholic school. “It suited me because I was a little bit shy, and I’m not sure I could have flourished in a large co-ed environment,” she says. After graduating from Georgetown University, Sanford worked at Lazard Freres in New York City for six years. “I always wanted to go into business. It’s always been my love,” she said. There’s plenty Sanford misses about the North Shore — Homer’s Ice Cream, the Original Pancake House. “Here it’s more grits and sausage — more stubborn fare, if you will,” she says. “I have learned how to cook grits. They’re pretty easy.” Given her background, popularity and smarts, would she ever run for Congress in South Carolina? Says Sanford, “You never say never.” ■

Love & marriage The keys to finding a good marriage counselor

A few weeks ago I received an email from a reader in search of help. She asked if I could recommend a marriage counselor. I was alternately flattered that she considered me a reputable source for all things marriage and flabbergasted that she would trust me with something as precious as the fate of that most important relationship. My formal education covered English and marketing – far cries from the kind of expertise this reader sought. Her email, however, raised a good question: How do people find good marriage counselors? While I don’t hesitate to detail the contents of a blocked pipe when I ask a neighbor to recommend a good plumber, I’m not sure that I could be brave enough to ask the same neighbor about counseling. Would she look down upon my failures as a wife? Would she be insulted by the suggestion that she has called on a marriage a counselor to improve her own relationship? While I lack the knowledge requested by my reader and the courage to be honest with my neighbors, I have other skills. Among them, I am an excellent shopper, and I knew immediately that I could help my distressed

reader hunt for a good counselor. Clinical social worker and therapist Anna Marcolin of Highland Park said the Internet is a good place to start. Sites like NetworkTherapy.com and PsychologyToday. com can help couples find therapists in their community who specialize in marriage and relationship counseling. Consider which of the therapists listed is also covered by your insurance plan, and you’re headed in the right direction. “In the end it’s about finding the proper fit,” Marcolin said. “Call the office and talk to the therapist for 5-10 minutes on the phone. Or go in; set up a 15-minute consultation. We can have all the skills in the world but if the personalities don’t fit, we’re not going to be of any help. “Go with your gut. Psychology is intimate – it’s the most intimate leap you can take. You must feel like you can trust your therapist.” Evanston social worker Susan Kennedy agreed: the goal is to find someone with whom both spouses are comfortable and feel respected. Look for a counselor with specific training in marital therapy when

you’re browsing online, she said, but trust your instincts to seek out a situation that feels right. Once you make the first call, Northfield social worker Lynn Zakeri offered ideas to guide a consultation. She said the therapist should be clear about his or her style for working with couples. “You want to be sure that the counselor is a good fit for both spouses. Some people may worry that the counselor is going to align with one side or the other,” she said. “You also want some tangible strategies. You want someone to challenge you and to work toward something that makes sense to everyone.” But she, too, echoed adv ice first heard from M a r c ol i n a nd Kennedy: go with your gut. Look at photos and descriptions online before you make any calls. “Therapy will be exhausting,” Zakeri warned. “You’re going to talk about parenting, money, sex and insecurities. It’s a lot of work to come in and hear why the person you love the most

Arnie Krause is the chef at City Park Grill in Highland Park and has been in the restaurant business for more than 25 years. He is also the chef at The Claim Company in Northbrook. Did you cook growing up? No, I got into the kitchen aspect kind of by accident. I planned on being in the front of restaurants, but when I started working at Timber, I ended up spending most of my time in the kitchen. I got a taste for it and ended up supervising the kitchen for a number of years before becoming the chef at Forty-One North in 1999. Best advice? You need to have patience, a passion for it — if you don’t, it will eat you — and you need to make time to get out and see what other people are doing. Favorite dish on the menu? If I’m doing fish, it’s the cashew tilapia. If I’m doing meat, it’s the barbecue skirt steak. Favorite food to make? Recently I’ve been enjoying pastas. You can combine and mix and match different items and create something that’s pleasing to your palate — pasta lends itself to experimentation, because you combine things that you might not think about putting together otherwise. What do you like to eat at home?

Pasta or fish. I prefer the white, flakey fishes —groupers, bass, snappers. You can do anything with them. I like it spicy. Favorite tool? A good, sturdy, well-balanced chef’s knife is always a chef’s best friend. I don’t have any certain tool that I use more than others. Favorite cookbook? I’m more into magazines than I am into cookbooks. I really like Cook’s Magazine; it keeps things more straightforward and in the real world, as opposed to some cookbooks that aren’t good out of the environment they were written in. Funniest or most memorable kitchen incident? It’s funny now — my very first day in the kitchen at Timbers. I was 24 years old, and we had a mesquite char broiler that we cooked all of our fish on. It was 100 percent wood-burning, and you had to start it every morning. When I was shaving kindling, the very first thing I did was put the hatchet in my thumb. Victor Seyedin, co-owner of Lake City Cleaners with his wife, Janice, wanted to make a name for himself in the “green” cleaning industry. That is why he was the first on the North Shore to purchase Solvair, the environmentally friendly dry cleaning machine. “It is the Ferrari of dry cleaning machines,” said Seyedin, adding that people from as far as London have come to check out the machine that has clothes float, not tumble, for five minutes before coming out clean, reducing the risk for damage or shrinkage. “We have the best equipment available and the best quality people to press the garment.” Seyedin bought the 80-year-old cleaners in Highland Park in 2000 after moving to Chicago from Wisconsin, where he had operated video-rental stores. He added three more sites after buying Perfecto Cleaners. Today, Lake City Cleaners specializes in cleaning high-quality garments for clients from Lake Bluff to Lake Shore Drive, with locations in Lake Forest, Highland Park, Evanston and Chicago. china, after its use, you must take special care of it,” said Seyedin. “You don’t put china in the dishwasher after dinner because you’ll break it.” Seyedin wanted to see firsthand the way high-end garments are made so that his stores can better care for luxurious fabrics. A trip to the Brioni factory in Italy proved to be an invaluable experience for him. “I see why people pay $80,000 for a suit,” he said. “The wool is so fine and so difficult to make a suit out of it, and that’s why it is so important to know how to take care of it.” About 40 employees work across the four stores. Specialties include wedding gowns, tailoring, drapery and shoe repair. Seyedin is no stranger to providing expert customer service. Back in his video-rental days, he received an award for Best Retailer of the Year in 1997 and he also won Best Retailer in the U.S. and Canada in the small business category in 1995. His cleaning stores have been honored by America’s Best Cleaners. “I love service and have a passion for my customers,” said Seyedin. Then he corrected himself. “They’re not customers; they’re friends.” ■

“Lob City” is taken, the nickname for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, featuring loft passes from point guard Chris Paul to dunking machine Blake Griffin. A similar basketball show this winter has been playing to rave reviews at the local level. New Trier High School senior Reid Berman often authors well-timed alley-oop passes to 6-foot-4 classmate Steven Cook, who has frayed countless nets with his slams for the 22-4 Trevians. Maybe “Lob Village” will stick. Winnetka is a village, after all. “It’s easy for me. All I do is throw the ball up there and let (Cook’s) long arms take over from there,” the 6-foot Berman said last weekend. It’s not easy. Berman makes it look easy, as he does when he delivers any kind of pass. The highly competitive

Berman displays wide array of passes as New Trier’s assist king point guard displayed his full arsenal of passes in NT’s 65-61 defeat of St. Viator in a War on the Shore shootout game at Loyola Academy on Feb. 2. Some were fancy, some were textbook and some were “hockey assists” (the passes made before the assists). Against Viator’s Lions Berman bounced passes to post players and cutting guards, shoved chest passes, chucked lengthy quarterback passes and even got an assist on a two-handed, overhead launch that traveled three-quarters of the court and landed in the hands of senior Stas Banas (game-high 22 points). Berman finished with nine points and 10 assists in the Trevians’ ninth straight win, a night after helping NT down Waukegan 75-64 in a Central Suburban League South game. “Reid Berman had the best weekend,” NT boys basketball coach Scott Fricke said. “He’ll probably end up being our school’s all-time leader in assists (400-plus).”

A “dime” in hoops is slang for assist. If you received a dime for each of Berman’s assists in the 32-team Proviso West Tournament in December, you’d be $4 richer. His 40 assists in five games set a tournament record. The second-best assist man at this season’s tourney totaled 27. “I’ve always loved passing and handling the ball,” said the Amherst College-bound Berman, averaging 8.1 points and nearly seven assists per game. “Growing up, that’s what I always worked on with my dad (Tom, who played point guard at MIT, located 92 miles from Amherst).” Berman lives only three houses — or approximately three lob passes — from the Princeton-bound Cook. The two have been playing basketball together, or against each other in driveways, since the second grade. “We have good chemistry on the court,” Cook said. ‘It’s fun playing with him.” It can’t be fun playing against him. Nobody wants to win a basketball game more than the feisty Berman does, considering his all-business, all-out demeanor on the court from tip to final buzzer. “He never backs down in games,” Cook said. Berman oozes leadership, and fittingly his jersey number (12) is the number some of the greatest NFL quarterbacks have worn. But Berman’s affinity for his favorite number has nothing to do with football. “That was John Stockton’s number,” Berman said of the former Utah Jazz great, who is the NBA’s career leader in assists. “John Stockton — that’s my guy.” Berman later spoke highly of his Trevians team after the victory over St. Viator, which had entered the game with a 15-5 mark and defeated state-ranked Benet Academy the previous night. “I didn’t learn anything new about our team (this weekend),” he said. “Others probably did, though. Some have thought we’re soft suburban kids; that’s not the case. Sure it would be nice to be ranked as a team, but we’re more concerned with the process of the season, with getting better as a team each game.” Berman’s next team, Amherst, has averaged 24 wins per season since 2000-01 under Amherst alumnus and 36thyear coach David Hixon (’75), including the 30-2 mark the Lord Jeffs had after winning the NCAA Division III national championship in ’07. Hixon’s 2012-13 club is 20-2 (8-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference) and won its 14th straight game when it beat Tufts 100-89 on Feb. 2. “My major in college?” Berman said last weekend. “No idea. Check back with me in two years.” For now, he’ll continue to concentrate on getting that MBA (Most Basketball Assists) at New Trier. Recap: In addition to Berman’s and Banas’ stellar efforts against St. Viator, Cook scored 15 points and came down with a team-high seven rebounds, while Trevians junior guard Jordan Thomas netted nine points, including five of NT’s 13 made free throws in the fourth quarter. ■

Munzer, a Yale University recruit who is averaging 24.9 points per game, is all about involving others. She leads the team in every major category: points, rebounds, steals, assists and passes to LoGrande. “That shot on the wing. That’s Lizzy’s shot,” said Munzer, who consistently kicks the ball out to LoGrande when she’s double-teamed in the lane. “She’s worked hard on her three-point shot. And the success she’s had with it is reflective of the hard work she’s put it.” “Lizzy always has been a pretty good shooter,” said HP head coach Jolie Bechtel. “She’s always had that range.” LoGrande hit a pair of three-pointers and tossed in 10 points in HP’s heart-breaking Senior Night loss to Glenbrook North on Feb. 1. She fouled out with 4:14 left to play — and her absence was felt. “That was a big blow,” said Munzer. “But we can’t lose our focus.” “Lizzy also is a good ball-handler,” said Bechtel. “And we could have used that at the end of the game.” LoGrande has had her share of solid performances this winter. She was an all-tournament selection in the Mundelein Thanksgiving Tournament. And she put up a season-high 22 points in the tournament opener in Orlando during the winter break. “To her credit, she does more than scoring,” said Bechtel. “She also has become one of our better defenders. Some claim that it takes 17 muscles to smile. John Lee used all 17 after earning a sectional qualifying berth at the Fremd Regional on Feb. 2. The New Trier High School senior, who entered the competition with a rather faceless 12-17 record, couldn’t stop smiling after pinning Fremd’s Rob Haase in the 152pound third-place bout. He flashed one of those perma-smiles. “It’s unbelievable,” said an ecstatic Lee, seconds after recording the victory. “It’s going to be my first trip to the podium. I’m so happy.” The smile didn’t go unnoticed by his coach. “He’s proud of himself, and he should be,” said New Trier mat boss Marc Tadelman. “I don’t think he’s done,” the coach added. “We don’t want him to think that this is the pinnacle. Hopefully, he’ll win some matches at the sectional (Friday and Saturday at Barrington).” Lee’s overall record (15-18) is deserving of the asterisk. “Everyone laughs at his record, but some of his losses came against top wrestlers,” Tadelman said. Lee, who has been wrestling since the fifth grade, was on his game throughout the regional. He won his first match by a major decision (14-4). Then, after dropping a 2-0 decision to the 152-pound runner-up, Sanja Erdenebaater of Glenbrook South, in the semifinals, Lee went to town with pins against Glenbrook North’s Vince Agins (2:37) and Haase (4:34).

“I guess I wanted it more,” said Lee, who was a second string JV wrestler last year. “I knew I needed to turn it up for regional. I’ve been going hard in the weight room.” His efforts also made a difference in the team standings. The Trevians claimed top honors with 202 points. Prospect was the runner-up (183). NT’s regional champs were junior Colin Kenyon, senior M.J. Pritchard, senior Chris

And McKenna (32-9) dominated the action at 132, topping Wheeling’s David Gonzalez in the final with a major decision. ■

In the first minute of her varsity basketball career at Lake Forest Academy in 2009, guard Lauren Clamage committed a turnover. It was an over-and-back violation in a season opener at the Vernon Hills High School Tournament. “Too much adrenaline was pumping,” the 5-foot-7 Clamage, now a senior, recalled with a smile. Caxys coach Chris Tennyson motioned immediately to his excitable freshman starter after the whistle, signaling her to join him for a quick face-to-face near a sideline. “Relax,” he ordered. “Close your eyes and take a deep breath.” Clamage closed her eyes and took a deep breath. More than three years later the same Lauren Clamage left people breathless with a 36-point effort in a satisfying win at Culver (Ind.) Academy and scored her eye-popping 1,000th career point at the Fenton Quad in Bensenville four days later. “That’s a heck of a milestone,” Tennyson said of Clamage’s “grand” feat, accomplished on Jan. 23. “She’s reached the point where’s she comfortable with the ball in her hands and all of her teammates look up to her and defer to her.” After her brilliant game at Culver on Jan. 19, Clamage sat near Tennyson during a pizza team dinner. Clamage had nailed a trio of treys in the third quarter — turning a slight lead into a comfortable advantage — and Tennyson wanted to discuss that key stretch and the career-high point total with his co-captain between bites. But Clamage, a Lake Forest resident, wanted to focus on the team — and the team only. “I don’t like talking about individual stats,” Clamage said after scoring 12 points in LFA’s 53-26 defeat of host Woodlands Academy on Jan. 29. “All I wanted to do was talk about the win with my coach. It’s

a ‘team’ sport and teammates passed the ball to me and helped me get open. “What I’ll never forget about that win was how high our assistant coach (Erica Wood) jumped after the win. I’d never seen her jump as high as she did that day.” A point guard in some games and a shooting guard in others, Clamage averages 21 points, nearly five rebounds and 4.5 assists per game this winter for LFA (12-9). She dropped 24 points on St. Viator and 22 on Latin in games last month and tallied 32 in a 60-50 loss to North Chicago on Feb. 2. Her career point total stood at 1,086 after the NC game. “She’s more than a good shooter,” LFA senior co-captain Margaux Boles said. “She can also score on drives and she has so many moves. We’re playing well as a team because of Lauren’s versatility and confidence.” Three significant reasons Clamage is as competitive as she is are Eric, Ryan and Austin — her brothers. Eric is a sophomore at Furman University, Ryan is a sophomore at LFA and Austin is 8. “When we go at it in basketball, whether it’s on a driveway or in a gym, we almost need a referee,” said the sister, who trains with her younger brothers under the guidance of longtime AAU basketball coach Mike Weinstein on most Sundays. “It gets intense and physical against my brothers. But I love it; I always have. “When I’m playing basketball, I don’t think about anything else and that’s what I also love about the sport.” Clamage lauded Tennyson for his hoops acumen and pointed to Weinstein for her improved shooting. Her release is quicker and she’s creating more space for herself before elevating for a jumper. “Lauren’s skills and leadership have grown,” Tennyson said of his secondyear captain. “What’s also special about Lauren is her blend of competitiveness and lightheartedness. “Her skills have gotten better every

photography by j.geil year,” he added. “What I’ve noticed about her game this season more than anything else is how confident she is with her dribbling.” Starting next winter she’ll bounce a basketball for Division III Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., where she’ll likely score at least 1,000 more points in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. She plans to major in premed and begin a path toward becoming a pediatrician. “That’s the career I’ve wanted for a long time,” said Clamage, who attempted to heal a teammate’s shooting struggles after a game last month by taking her aside and reminding her to bend her knees and follow through more. Clamage sometimes likes to work on her own follow-through — while flat on her back in her room — with the engraved ball she

received on Jan. 26 to commemorate her 1,000th career point. Two of her biggest supporters, parents Ed and Audrey Clamage, were present for the presentation before LFA’s home game against Willows Academy. “My mom, she got a little emotional,” the Caxys’ all-time leading scorer recalled. “My dad was proud.” Recap: LFA forward Dija Diouf scored 10 points, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and finished with two steals and two blocks in the 53-26 defeat of Woodlands on Jan. 29. Boles added 11 points. Sophomore guard Avanna Kotlarz paced Woodlands with nine points, while Wildcats senior forward Lexi Gonzalez had five boards. … Clamage hit for a team-high 18 points in LFA’s 51-27 defeat host Christian Liberty on Jan. 31. ■

Full throttle ‘Racer’ Mangan gets set for final push before heading to Michigan

When he was 8, Jack Mangan swam for Skokie Country Club’s swim team. Swimming was a recreation for the Winnetka resident then, just another activity. Lacrosse, basketball and football would attempt to woo him later. “I didn’t think swimming was a big deal,” recalled Mangan, now a New Trier High School senior. But New Trier boys swim coach Mark Onstott thought of Mangan as the real deal way back then. Onstott also served as Indian Hill Club’s swim coach, and whenever Indian Hill faced Skokie CC, Mangan caught Onstott’s attention.

“Jack was a racer,” Onstott said. “He gave everything he got in every race and that was obvious to me. He hasn’t changed a bit.” Mangan’s mother Julie, unlike Jack, knew Onstott coached New Trier Trevians after country club seasons. She encouraged her young son to introduce himself to the coach. “I didn’t feel like doing that because I wasn’t serious about swimming,” he said. “I started getting serious about it in the eighth grade, after narrowing it down. “If I hadn’t pursued swimming, I’d probably be playing lacrosse – and not being very good at it.” Mangan closeted the lax stick for good and stuck with swimming. He was too good in the water for New Trier’s

freshman team and made Onstott’s 2009-10 varsity squad. As a sophomore for the Trevians’ state championship team, he touched third at state in the 100-yard backstroke (50.53) from lane 2 (as the fifth seed) and swam the backstroke leg of the runner-up 200 medley relay. “What Jack did in the 100 back his sophomore year showed he wasn’t intimidated by anybody,” said Onstott, who is preparing his team for Saturday’s Central Suburban League South meet at Niles West. “He likes to work hard and get up and go. I’ll take a bunch of guys like him every season.” Mangan’s goal for the 100 back his sophomore year was a modest top-12 finish. After going 51.27 in prelims, he went home and devised his game plan for the next day’s championship heat. “I thought a lot about my underwaters (kick work) and what I could change to improve,” he said. “I also settled down (during the finals), and that helped a lot. When I got third place I thought, ‘Cool.’ ” In his junior season last winter, Mangan left the state meet with four more medals, including a pair of relay golds (200 medley, 400 freestyle) for another state championship crew. He also placed second in the 100 back (49.67, after setting the school record in the event with a 49.37 in the previous day’s preliminaries) and added a third-place effort in the 100 free (1:32.99). “Jack was pretty skinny with a fast tempo when he started swimming,” said classmate and USC-bound swimmer Reed Malone. “Then he got bigger but kept his fast tempo.” Mangan and Malone, along with 2012 NTHS graduates Sam Skinner and Max Grodecki, were the talk of the state meet at last winter’s state prelims. Their collective tempo in the 400 free relay resulted in a 2:59.76 – a national record. From casual country club participant to one of the best in the country, Mangan’s path to stardom was complete. But there’s more to shoot for at the prep level (a third straight state team title, more individual medals) and at the next level as a member of the men’s swim team at the University of Michigan. “It (swimming) has shaped my whole life,” said the 6-foot-2, 167-pound Mangan, a six-time All-American and one of the Trevians’ captains this winter. “I’ve met great friends through it and my attitude toward everything is different and better because of swimming. I’ve learned being nervous before a race never helps. You have to have confidence, and that has carried over to school. I’m never nervous before tests. “A lot of good has come from swimming,” he added. When he’s dry, Mangan enjoys electronic music, particularly Kaskade tracks. One of the artist’s hits is “It’s You, It’s Me.” It’s Malone who gets the final word. “Jack is a great kid, a funny kid and a hard worker,” he said. “Very humble and motivating, too.” ■

Alex Lopez didn’t end up as a sectional qualifier. But the Loyola Academy wrestler did walk away from the Fremd Regional on Feb. 2 with a vivid realization. “This is the kind of intensity I need to bring into next season,” said Lopez. The junior, who entered postseason action with a 14-19 record, was on the cusp of something big, when he nearly upset Wheeling’s Rick Muno in the 126-pound third-place match. Lopez, a soccer standout in the fall at LA, came up with a number of late moves but fell short 12-10. “Almost had him,” said Lopez. He was turning Muno (23-10) as time expired. “I was in desperation mode,” said Lopez. “I needed two or three more seconds. I didn’t quite hit the move. But it was in the process.” Lopez, who ended the season 16-21, faced uphill climb when he fell behind 12-7 with 51 seconds left. “When I went down by five, I decided to stop looking at the clock,” said Lopez. “I figured what happens, happens. It was a well-fought match. That kid (Muno) is a good wrestler.” Facing uphill climbs was Lopez’s specialty on Saturday. Prior to his match with Muno, Lopez found a way to overcome a 7-0 deficit to beat Rolling Meadows Sean Fitzgerald 9-7 in overtime. He was able to “out-will” Fitzgerald (1612) in the end.“I didn’t want that loss to define my season,” said Lopez. As this grappling is fairly new to Lopez. “I played basketball as a freshman. Then, as a sophomore, I was cut,” said Lopez. “I wanted to be a two-sport athlete, so I went

photography by j.geil out for wrestling. I’m still trying to catch up to the sport.” LA head coach Chris Stevens loves his upside. “He’s a fighter,” said the coach. “You don’t have to worry about him not working hard or not having his heart in it. “He’ll be there for us next year,” Stevens

added. “And he’ll use this meet as a motivating factor. It will fuel him.” Loyola will send two wrestlers to this weekend’s sectional at Barrington. Senior Patrick Dancer (28-14) took runner-up honors at 145 pounds, while junior Nico Couri (27-16) claimed a third at 120.

The season came to a tough ending for several other Ramblers, who finished with impressive records. Senior David Kennedy ended up 26-18 at 160. Senior Jack Tower had a 30-win season at 170. Ryan Wosick was 19-14 at 182. And Peter McPike wound up 25-18 at 195. ■

Marsh — Andrew Marsh — poised for stirring prep finish before heading to Iowa

An inspirational person in Andrew Marsh’s life is a 76-year-old retired pharmacist who skydives, skis avidly and teaches a spinning class. He is Marsh’s Grandpa Jim. “He is always game to jump out of a plane,” said Marsh, a senior diver on Lake Forest High School’s swimming and diving team. “We’ll do it again, no doubt.” Grandpa and grandson plummeted to earth together in Michigan not long after Marsh turned 18. Skydive No. 2 for Marsh took place when he and his good friend, classmate/tennis standout Maddie Lipp, departed a plane and landed somewhere in the DeKalb area this past spring.

“Andrew loves to do anything that has to do with heights,” Scouts diving coach Pam Uhrik said. Last summer, with sweaty-palmed friends looking on, Marsh survived a 40-foot gainer dive off a quarry cliff in Wisconsin. “That,” Marsh said, “probably gave me the best adrenaline rush.”The daredevil also likes to perform risky X Games-type moves while wearing skis and going downhill. But the 5-foot-9, 150-pound Marsh also climbs quite well. A year after finishing 37th in diving at the state meet as a sophomore, he ascended to 12th place in the standings after the state preliminaries last winter. He then rose to ninth place (372.15 points) in the next day’s finals session, thanks to his nearly flawless inward 2-and-a-half (3.1 degree of difficulty) on his final descent.

“He ripped that dive,” Uhrik recalled. It was the first time a Scouts diver had medaled at state since Victor Paguia captured his second straight championship in 2001. “Andrew turned our program around,” Scouts swimming coach Cindy Dell said. “He has no fear, and what he does for our younger ones, especially the encouragement he gives them daily, has been incredible. “Andrew,” she added, “is a big reason we have 11 divers in the program. He’s a class act and a great role model.” Marsh’s prep diving career started modestly. He made the varsity as a freshman, but he didn’t amp up his commitment to the sport until he began training in Chicago with Windy City club divers in the spring of 2010. “When I saw better divers around me, I started feeding off their talent,” Marsh said. “I wanted to get to their level.” He got there — in a hurry. Both of his feet have been smothering the accelerator ever since. After finishing runner-up at the Lake County Invitational in December and third at the New Trier Invite in January, Marsh topped the 48-diver field at the highly competitive Hinsdale Central Invite on Jan. 15. The Hinsdale Central gathering has been dubbed a “mini state meet” for many years. “The intensity of that meet is right up there with that of the state meet,” Marsh said. “It was a long day and a good stamina test.” Marsh’s hurdle — the steps a diver takes before bouncing off the board — is unique in that it features a smooth, cool-looking hop near the end of it.“It’s a ‘Texas two step’ and it’s really helped me get the height I need on my dives,” Marsh said. There’s much more to Marsh, though, than his talent and high finishes at meets. Marsh cracks people up left and right, particularly at practices when humor can be a timely salve for jittery teammates. “Andrew makes the practice environment really fun for the diving guys,” LF senior diver Drew Stoll said. “He’s super nice to the freshmen and helps them out when they’re working on difficult dives. “He has great balance — serious as a diver, fun to be around as a teammate,” Stoll added. Marsh recently committed to dive at the University of Iowa, where Scouts senior standout Peter Grumhaus will swim.Before a recent practice, Uhrik marveled at the strides Marsh has made as a diver since his freshman season. “His first year he was playing around as a diver, having a good time,” she said. “It was a fun intro to the sport. To see where he is now compared to then, honestly it’s been incredible.” For Iowa’s Hawkeyes he’ll get the opportunity to perform dives off a 10-meter platform. That’s still a far cry from the exit door of a plane. But it’s higher than a springboard. Things are certainly looking up for Andrew Marsh, aren’t they? ■

James Clarke can score points in bunches. The Loyola Academy junior guard proved that in the final game of the War on the Shore shootout on Feb. 2. In the team’s 63-54 overtime triumph over state-ranked Niles Notre Dame, Clarke reeled off 10 points in two minutes in the fourth quarter. He then hit six straight free throws in the OT session to close out the win with a gamehigh 24 points. “I got into a rhythm,” said Clarke. “And I was able to knock down some shots.” And right now, Clarke is helping Loyola win in bunches. With the victory over Notre Dame (18-4), which was playing without their top scorer Matt Mooney, the Ramblers (17-5, 7-2) extended their win streak to 10 games. “I’m loving it,” said Clarke. “Our whole team is fired up right now. “This team has a great bond. It’s a great locker room,” he added. “There are no jealousies. We’re just here to win games.” Niles North, on Dec. 27, was the last team to beat LA.

“We’re not there yet,” said Loyola coach Tom Livatino. “We still have a long way to go to take that next step.” Clarke wasn’t the only player coming through in the clutch against the Dons. In overtime, Junior Jack Morrissey (12 points, three rebounds, three assists) scored five quick points, including a way-behind-the-line three-pointer. “When we need a big shot, we go to Jack,” said Clarke. Kevin Kucera, Matt Sullivan, Richie Wehman and Chris Sullivan also figured prominently in the win. Kucera (seven points, five rebounds, three steals) hit a pair of key throws in the fourth quarter and added two more in overtime. Sullivan finished with 11 rebounds, six points and four assists. Two of his passes set up layups for Clarke in the fourth quarter. “They came off our triangle offense,” said Clarke. “Sully did a tremendous job of finding me open.” LA also came up with an impressive showing on Feb. 1, when the Ramblers took down St. Ignatius 38-22. Morrissey led the way with 11 points. Clarke added 10. The two teams now are tied for first place in the CCL North standings. ■

martini with huckleberry syrup. We’re very much into the farm and table movement. Paws pours local whiskeys and bourbons at the bars. We then head back to the room and enjoy the fireplace. There’s no cell reception; when you stop your golf cart, there is no noise. We can sit on our patio and count the stars — there are millions of them. On Saturday morning we have huckleberry pancakes at Trough (a resort restaurant). I dream about huckleberry pancakes. After that, some of our favorite outdoor activities are fly fishing, horseback riding, and more. We’ll have dinner at Pomp on Saturday night. You can get from their own cow a filet mignon with some root vegetables from a local farm. Big hunks of meat — it’s cowboy country. Sunday is usually a spa day after more huckleberry pancakes. We do sightseeing up and down the Blackfoot River. And then lunch in Missoula at a brew pub that makes its own beer.
